GRATEFUL FOR LIFE’S BLESSINGS

As Donna Hunt looks forward to celebrating her 86th Christmas, she says many of the best gifts in her life are people — her family, friends, former students, plus some celebrities and politicians she’s felt fortunate to meet.

Helping others and developing cherished friendships are two of her lifelong passions.

“I have been so lucky to have super people in my life,” Donna said. “Much has been given to me. I hope I have given enough back.”

A lifelong South Dakotan, Donna was born and spent her early childhood in Wagner.

Her father, Neil Hansen, ran the Fairmont Dairy store and her mother, Olive, was a homemaker. Donna’s earliest memories are of her hometown and World War II, which began when she was five years old. Donna recalls her family enduring blackouts that became more frequent after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

“The sirens would ring and everybody was to turn off all the lights. You couldn’t even have a candle on. You closed the draperies and waited for the siren to come on so you could turn the lights on,” Donna recalls. “The fear was that Japan or Germany could pick out the towns and bomb us.”

“My biggest scare was the bombing of Pearl Harbor,” she said. “We had the old round radio and we were all sitting around it and listening to President Roosevelt saying Pearl Harbor had been bombed and it was just devastating.”

Her father was unable to enlist because of health reasons. “Many of the men were gone but my dad was not. He heard a lot of comments about that and wished he had could have gone,” Donna said.

The family moved to Rapid City in 1944, eventually making their home in Rapid Canyon. Donna and her older brothers, Deane and “Monk,” attended Cleghorn School.

“Dad was the president of the PTA and my mom was my Girl Scout troop leader, and that was my first taste of doing for others. I’m a real big believer in doing for others,” Donna said.

When Donna was 10, her beloved sister Sharon was born. Her mother was busy with the baby so Donna’s father introduced his daughter to one of her lifelong passions — horses.

“That’s when my dad said, ‘You need to get a horse.’ That might be one of the most important things in my life were my horses,” Donna said. “My father had gone to work for E.C. ‘Ping’ Murray. …

are probably what I am most proud of and they’ve had some beautiful children, and now I’m a great-grandmother and that’s also fun,” Donna said.

Donna finished her education at Black Hills State University, where she studied Spanish and earned a degree in education, Bob was a businessman and the mayor of Belle Fourche. The couple was active in many social and civic organizations. They met and worked with many state/local leaders. Donna counts herself grateful to have known former South Dakota governor Joe Foss and his wife, Dede, and former Lt. Governor Lem Overpeck.

“We met Bob Dole at a speech in Rapid City. Such a smart, good man,” Donna said. “He and I shared birthdays.”

“A friend in Arkansas asked me to welcome Hillary Clinton when she

was campaigning in Rapid City for Bill Clinton,” Donna said. “She was lovely and knew the people well. We had a good visit.”

Many of Donna’s treasured relationships are with her former students. Her marriage to Bob ended in divorce. Donna was a nearing 50 when she began her teaching career. St. Martin’s School called and asked if she’d teach Spanish.

“Not being Catholic, I was skeptical but I went. It was peaceful. I felt their love. I said yes,” Donna said. “It was the job of a lifetime to teach. I was so thankful and grateful. I was also lucky to be able to work with the nuns. They are lovely women.”

Donna taught at St. Martin’s School which became St. Thomas More for 14 years. Many of her students achieved National Spanish Exam honors. Today, most of her Facebook friends are

former students, Donna said, and she’s honored to be a multiple-year nominee to Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers.

“Of all the teachers they’d had, and they could only choose one, they chose ME! Thank you, students,” Donna said.

She retired at 67 and faced another challenge — battling breast cancer. She also found love again and married Jim Hunt in 2013. The couple lives in Sturgis.

“Jim and I are in our sunset days,” Donna said. “It is good that God gave me a strong man at this time in my life. I cherish our days together.”

Through all of life’s ups and downs, Donna relies on five essentials for the joy and strength she needs.

“They are my Trinity, my family, my friends, love and my work. Without a single one of these, I don’t know where I’d be today,” she said.

DONNA Hunt FIVE THINGS ABOUT

1. Donna’s favorite Christmas memory is from her childhood, when she received a cherished gift. She wanted a Magic Skin Doll. The 1940s era dolls were made of a latex/rubber material meant to give each doll a more realistic feel. Donna’s family had moved to Rapid City and had very little, yet her parents got her a Magic Skin Doll for Christmas. “I was beyond happy,” Donna remembers. She recalls the day she left her doll in the family’s screened-in back porch, where the doll sat too long in the sun and got a “tan” by accident. “I still have her. She’s in bad shape but I can’t part with her,” Donna said.

2. After nearly drowning two or three times as a child, Donna became a lifeguard. “I didn’t want (drowning) to happen again,” she said. “I decided to become a good swimmer.” She became certified as a life guard after graduating from high school. While a student at the University of South Dakota, Donna became one of The Dolphins — a synchronized water ballet team. “That was really quite fun,” Donna said. “I absolutely love swimming. I love the water.”

3. Donna counts movie stars as some of the people she’s been blessed to meet. “It’s just something a lot of people haven’t gotten to experience,” she said. E.C. “Ping” Murray, who owned land where Donna boarded her horses, was part of a group that promoted the Black Hills to the film industry. “When a movie crew came into the area to make a movie, Ping was in on that. He had a beautiful home on Rapid Creek so they would have a lot of those private parties out there,” Donna said. “On more than on occasion, Ping would call and tell me to get over to his house, that there were some people he thought I’d like to meet. I’d run over and there were movie stars there. What a surprise. Filming movies in our beautiful Black Hills was happening. As a result, through the years I got to meet Rock Hudson, Jack Oakie, Van Heflin, Charleton Heston, Yvonne

DeCarlo, Susan Cabot and others I can’t recall. I have their autographs. … Rex Allen — what a gentleman he was. These people had such big names and yet they were so kind and nice.”

4. Donna is extremely proud of her family’s military service. Donna is member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a service organization for women who can trace their lineage back to someone who served in or supported the American Revolution. “I bleed red, white and blue,” Donna said. “My brothers and … brother-in-law all served in the military. I am most grateful and thankful for this. My ancestors fought in the American Revolution. These gentlemen helped to give us the freedom we have today. I love this country.” She’s proud of her husband, Jim, who is a veteran, and Jim’s grandsons, one of whom recently completed his Air Force service and the other who is in the Army.

5. A Maltese named Sugar is one of the great joys of Donna’s life. A lifelong animal lover, she didn’t have pets growing up but knew she would have pets when she got married. “We always had cats and dogs,” Donna said. Over the years, her menagerie included a Yorkie named Ethyl. “She was high-energy dog, a high-octane so I named her Ethyl,” Donna said. When Ethyl died, Jim didn’t want any more pets, but Donna had other ideas. She researched dog breeds online and found a couple who had a Maltese. Jim accompanied Donna to Mitchell to pick up the dog and stopped along the way to buy a “grocery cart overflowing with toys.” “Guess whose dog she is now?” Donna chuckled. Sugar has been with Jim and Donna for about four years. “She’s a little ray of sunshine. At our point in life, I just felt like I needed young new life. I have to have joy in my life and that’s what my daughters and my little Sugar give me.”

Celebrating the 10th Outstanding Women in Business Awards

SD CEO West Women’s Business Center Announces 2022 Award Winners

Every year, successful South Dakota women entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs are recognized for their impact on business and savvy business acumen, integrity, compassion and commitment to community.

The nominees range from across the state and showcase the strong women entrepreneurship environment. Three women were recognized as 2022 Outstanding Women in Business Award recipients.

“The purpose of the SD CEO Outstanding Women in Business awards is to provide a platform to acknowledge and recognize working women across the state,” says Michelle Kane. “From 36 applications, a distinguished panel of judges representing different industries, locations and experiences in South Dakota reviewed each nomination to select the top three finalists for each award category.”

There were two award categories for business owners: the Enterprising Young Entrepreneur and Enterprising Woman Entrepreneur and one award for Enterprising Woman Intrapreneur. There is also the new “The Women’s Choice” award.

“Our top three finalists for each award category individually brought something unique to the table and deserve to be recognized as they have made a significant impact in business,” continued Kane. “Women continue to make strides in business across the state and it is a privilege to honor them.”

Let’s honor more women from across the state. The 11th Annual Outstanding Women in Business Award nominations will open in March 2023, and the awards will be presented in May 2023.

BRINGING PEACE ON EARTH with the Arts

Welcome to the holidays! With all the parties and concerts, decorating, gift-giving, relatives and shopping (endless shopping) –all inherent to our celebrations, sometimes December isn’t exactly all that peaceful. In fact, most people spend December wishing they could find a little peace on Earth.

There is a healthy, time-tested way to relax, practice mindfulness and have your distractions quiet down. Art can help you! Art encourages the mind to slow down and focus on the details. Both

creating art and participating as an audience member, release significant amounts of dopamine, the body’s feel-good hormone. Dopamine activates the reward pathways of the brain. These are the same pathways that light up like a Christmas tree when you are in love, petting puppies or eating chocolate. Art will always leave you feeling content.

The American Art Therapy Association has shown that engaging in just 45 minutes of creating art significantly reduces the levels of

14 DECEMBER 2022

cortisol (the stress hormone) across 75% of participants. When these levels are reduced and dopamine is added, our ability to form memories, feel energized and focus on tasks is greatly enhanced. Simply stated, we are more whole and more present when art is involved in our lives. Art brings more joy to the world!

Adults aren’t the only ones experiencing stress during the holiday season; children also pick up on the strain amidst this joyful time of year. Providing time and opportunity for children to engage in creativity is an essential tool for happier kids all year round. Children learn the skills of healthy expression, mindfulness and communication through art, whether they paint, dance or sing.

Allowing children to interact with art enhances empathy as well as critical and creative thinking. It speaks to their inherent humanity in ways digital experiences cannot. Young people who participate in art, whether creating or experiencing it, increase the potential even more for peaceful, community-minded leaders of the future.

It is understandable that the events of the past few years may have many of us feeling a little like the grinch, prior to his change of heart. Remember that exposure to the arts has the power to heal these negative feelings into childlike wonderment.

Whether you express your creativity via the choir, canvas, clay or coloring book, take care of yourself and your loved ones by choosing to celebrate with art.

Looking for an authentic South Dakota arts experience? Check out the Rapid City Arts Council and its many free exhibits and performances celebrating people like you, including the Dahl Arts Center in the heart of downtown Rapid City! We believe in supporting our local artisans and staying connected to our Black Hills community. At a time when the area is growing and expanding, we’re striving to keep the flavor of the region alive.

Inspired by the history of this area, both the aesthetics of the building and the diversity of the menu are true to our local roots, something no nation-wide franchise can duplicate. Certainly, there are other steakhouses out there, but none like ours.

Stay warm and toasty while filling your heart with some extra holiday spirit by driving through the Spearfish Optimist Club’s annual Winter Wonderland at the city campground this year. For the third year in a row, non-profit organizations and businesses in the community are excited to bring their own unique displays to share in their support of the holiday season and to brighten up the community.

Andrew Koistinen is one of the board members of the Optimist Club who helped bring the idea to Spearfish from his hometown east river. He says that the event is great for families both local and those visiting.

“It’s free, operating as a cash donation and a great way to kick off the holiday. Bring some popcorn or a cup of cocoa and enjoy the lights from the comfort of your car,” Andrew adds. Beginning December 3, the campground is open from 5-8 p.m. for the following dates: Dec. 9-10, 16-17 and 23.

All proceeds that are collected from the event go back to the community. On average, the event has seen about 10 thousand people come through and raised 10 thousand dollars. This year is expected to be even bigger and bring in almost 15 thousand dollars. Andrew says the club is hoping to see about 50 or more businesses participate in setting up displays and everyone seems excited about continuing the new tradition.

“It seems like we are seeing fewer and fewer houses deck the halls with the Christmas spirit, so the Winter Wonderland event is becoming the best opportunity for kids in the community to see all of the beautiful lights in one centralized location,” Andrew explains.

In addition to the colorful displays, Santa and Mrs. Claus are planning on making an appearance and spreading smiles while handing out candy canes for everyone.

About the Spearfish Optimist Club

Formed in 1986, the Spearfish Optimist Club has been serving the community for more than 45 years. “We are most noticeable through our events and the big smiles our members share,” board member Rich Loose says.

Internationally, the club has functioned for the sole purpose of benefiting the youth in each operating community. The mission is clear: By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in the youth, our communities, and ourselves.

Primarily, the Spearfish branch supports organizations like the Artemis House, Teen Court, CASA, and Title 1 programming.

Rich adds, “We make sure the children have safe, stimulating environments by supporting the public library, child care, and the Spearfish Fine Arts Boosters. We also invest in the academic success of our youth through a variety of scholarships and view physical health as vital to the development of children providing support in gymnastics, football, and the Special Olympics.”

5 style ideas for warming up your house this winter

As days get shorter, temperatures fall and we begin to spend more time indoors, many of us are looking for ways to make our homes more snug and cozy. After all, the winter months can be much easier to withstand when our homes become havens of warmth, calm and comfort. As British poet Edith Sitwell once wrote: "Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand, and for a talk beside the fire: It is the time for home."

The good news is that creating your own home haven need not be difficult if you understand how to create such environments through smart decor choices. With that in mind, here are five key decor elements that can go a long way toward making your home seem luxuriously warm and inviting - for both residents and guests.

Soft and luxurious textiles

The upholstery, drapes, curtains, linens, bedding and throws you pick can have a major impact on comfort levels. It may be worth spending more to purchase high-end textiles with high thread counts. One hundred percent cotton, bamboo or silk often feels best against the skin, but some luxury brands also use synthetic blends to their advantage.

Rich-looking hardwood floors

Hardwood floors offer unparalleled warmth and beauty to any home regardless of its architecture and design style. And thanks to technology, engineered hardwood flooring now offers the extra protection needed to keep them gorgeous even under duress. These types of floors are more scratch-resistant than traditional white oak hardwood flooring and are even water-resistant.

Peaceful atmospheric lighting

Our natural human circadian rhythms dictate that warm yellowish-white light (as opposed to cooler blue light) helps us relax and unwind. In general, light bulbs marked “soft white” or “warm white” will warm up any room. Lighting experts recommend using ceiling and non-symmetric wall lights to create the most comforting settings, but firelight and candlelight can also add a relaxing ambiance.

Comfortable furniture

Plenty of manufacturers create furniture that’s stylish but not particularly comfortable. If your pieces fit that description, you may wish to exchange them for styles that allow you to come in from the cold, settle in and fully relax. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a new pillow-top mattress, a cushy sectional couch that can seat your entire family around the TV or dining room chairs comfortable enough for game-playing and lingering conversations.

Warm color schemes

Because warm colors such as reds, yellows, oranges and yellow-greens tend to remind us of sun, sand and heat, they can make us perceive rooms as warmer and cozier. You may wish to boost that phenomenon by painting one or more of your rooms in those colors, or by choosing a neutral, subtly tinted tone in one of those shades. Many decorators suggest balancing the effect of intensely warm colors with accents in cooler hues.

With colder weather on the way, there’s much you can do to make your home a haven of comfort for your family. Take steps now to evaluate your home and think about improvements that could make it warmer and more wonderful throughout the winter months.
