Lighting & Electrical: Powering Your Home with Style and Function

Lighting and electrical systems are the backbone of a welldesigned home. While aesthetics matter, functionality and energy efficiency are just as important. The right combination of lighting and smart electrical solutions can elevate your space, improve daily convenience, and even lower your energy bills.

Good lighting is more than just flipping a switch, it’s about creating an atmosphere that suits your lifestyle. Whether you’re looking to brighten a workspace, set a cozy mood in the living room, or add security to outdoor areas, thoughtful lighting design makes all the difference. A well-balanced space combines ambient, task, and accent lighting, ensuring both beauty and functionality. Dimmable and tunable LEDs allow you to adjust brightness and color temperature to match the time of day, enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency. Outdoors, landscape lighting not only adds curb appeal but also improves safety, from softly lit pathways to dramatic uplighting that highlights architectural details.

Modern electrical systems go beyond basic wiring, integrating technology that makes life easier. Home automation has transformed how we interact with our living spaces, offering convenience, efficiency, and security. With voice and app-controlled lighting, you can adjust settings from anywhere, whether you’re at home or on the go. Motion-activated fixtures add convenience while reducing energy waste, making them ideal for hallways, closets, and bathrooms. Energy-saving solutions such as smart thermostats, automated blinds, and high-efficiency appliances work together to create a home that is both comfortable and cost-effective.

As homes evolve, so do their electrical needs. More homeowners are installing personal EV charging stations, ensuring their electric vehicles are powered up without relying on public chargers. Backup generators provide peace of mind during storms and outages, keeping homes running smoothly even when the power goes out. Solar integration continues to grow, with battery storage systems making renewable energy more accessible and practical.

Lighting and electrical upgrades can transform your home, but expert installation is key to ensuring safety, efficiency, and lasting results. Whether you’re planning a remodel or simply updating a fixture, the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire connects you with trusted professionals who can bring your vision to life. ive your home or business the ‘wow’ factor with permanent, exterior lighting. Sioux Falls Trimlight combines durable LED lighting with stunning special effects, music and color for illuminating transformations.

Sioux Falls Trimlight offers permanent, customizable, and programmable lighting options for businesses, homes and outdoor living spaces such as decks, pergolas, gazebos and patios. Trimlight systems come with a 5 year labor and 30 year warranty on parts.

“We hang everything in an aluminum track,” explains Tom Munich, co-owner of Sioux Falls Trimlight. “You don’t even know the lights are there unless you’re looking for them. With that aluminum track, we hang them just below the soffit, and we color match your soffit so it all blends in.”

Trimlight’s systems are built to withstand extreme South Dakota temperatures, which can run the gamut from triple digits in the summer months to well below freezing during the winter. Neatly tucked underneath the soffit, the lighting system is designed for protection from the elements. “The wind and rain and snow are not getting into it,” Tom adds.

Customers often choose versatile Trimlight systems because they want added security, accent lighting or ambiance around their homes. To enhance outdoor living spaces, Trimlight offers globe lighting designed for placement on patios and pergolas and near hot tubs and swimming pools.

In addition to versatility, Trimlight customers can also enjoy the convenience of operation at the touch of a button. A customer’s entire lighting system can be controlled with a free, user-friendly app. It’s downloadable on a smartphone or any smart device and can be operated from anywhere in the United States.

Customers can use the app to schedule or change the times lights turn on and off with a timer. For a customizable security lighting system, bulbs can even be programmed to highlight certain parts of a home or business. Bulbs can be spaced 6, 9 or 12 inches apart, depending on the customer’s preference, and the system operates through a control box that is strategically placed in a customer’s garage.

While homeowners like the ease and convenience of the app, they also enjoy the lighting system’s seemingly endless fun factor.

Trimlight’s patented system includes 16 million color options, plus animation and music that customers can effortlessly change to set the mood for any holiday, event or celebration. The Trimlight app allows customers to control and change the brightness, colors, moving patterns and music that coordinates with the lighting.

“We’re getting a lot of people being interested in their favorite sports teams and they like to display Sunday or Saturday lighting to represent team colors. I live in Brookings so it’s a lot of blue and yellow, and a lot of white and red around Vermillion. I see a lot of purple and yellow for the Minnesota Vikings,” adds Tom. “That’s a fun thing people like to do.”

Patriotic red, white, and blue color schemes are a favorite in Siouxland, Tom shares, and customers like to coordinate the lighting colors for special occasions.

“For my daughter’s birthday, she wanted pink and purple. You can add a movement pattern and you can have them cycle through certain patterns if you choose. You could hook it up to a Bluetooth speaker,” Tom explains. “If you were playing music, the lights would pulsate to the beat of the music. The thing we see the most is people will have a Bluetooth speaker set out by their front door during Halloween

and they will have music playing and lights pulsing to the beat of the music as kids are coming to the door.”

“People can be sitting on their back patio and have lights around their house and they would enjoy that music and lighting feature as well,” Chris Weeg notes.

The versatility of Trimlight, and its ease of use is much of what inspired business partners Tom Munich and Tanner Joachimsen to buy the franchise and take over as owners on January 3rd. Tom and Tanner had both been Trimlight systems installers for two years before purchasing the franchise. Former franchise owner Chris Weeg still works for Sioux Falls Trimlight part time.

A nationally recognized brand that was founded in 2010 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sioux Falls Trimlight serves the Sioux Falls area and the eastern side of South Dakota. It’s the first permanent lighting company in the United States, and Trimlight franchises are located nationwide.

One appealing aspect of owning Sioux Falls Trimlight is the opportunity to expand the business in Siouxland, Tom adds. He and Tanner hope to increase the use of Trimlight systems on commercial buildings.

“We’ve done a couple of businesses and we’ve tried to get more into that market. Trimlight is just that extra ‘Hey, I’m here!’” Tom shares. “You can grab people’s attention. Your building becomes almost the same as a billboard drawing attention to itself.”

“It could replace neon signs,” Tom suggests. “It’s still so relatively new. People want to see it before they would consider it.”

For upgraded security or to enhance a special feature on a home or business property, Trimlight offers downlighting that has the same color, animation and music options as Trimlight track lighting.

Whether you are looking for residential or commercial lighting, Trimlight customers can count on prompt, exceptional customer service.

“Once a customer calls for a quote, we strive on getting in touch with them within the next day to go through the options they want and what they’re looking for including whether it’s their home or their business, and getting their lighting needs taken care of,” Tom explains.

The beautiful exterior of this four-bedroom, 3.5 bath, 3,270 sq. ft. contemporary home at 809 N. Sylvan Avenue in Sioux Falls sports modern, clean lines that invite you in. Large windows framed in black contrast beautifully with the cream-toned horizontal siding accented with rich, wood-textured garage doors, and are enveloped by a welcoming stone facade. A striking outdoor front-facing second floor deck sits atop the 1,000 sq. ft. garage, beckoning you to venture out for some quiet time.

Smart Homes 605 prides itself on being the premier custom home builder in Sioux Falls, SD. Their dedication to excellence stems from an unwavering commitment to each client’s unique vision and needs.

A glass paneled front entry door invites you into a lovely bright entry hall accented by two walls of textured stone in pale, creamy greys. A stunning two-story atrium-style living room reveals an open floorplan from a strategic vantage point. Warm luxury vinyl plank wood flooring leads you into the expansive living space.

This great room features a wall of glass sliding doors across the span of the living room leading out to a covered back patio, with a second row of high windows brightening this 20’ tall two-story space. To the left is a floor-to-ceiling fireplace wall with a stone base, thick wood mantle, and Venetian plaster facade continuing up to the ceiling. Above the mantle is a perfect place for the wall-mounted TV to share the big game with the family and it can be seen from the main kitchen workspace.

The kitchen fully opens to the living room, with the dining area adjacent. The custom cabinetry is in a rich, deep wood-stain contrasting the beautiful, white marbled quartz countertop and backsplash. Pendant lighting illuminates the island and eating area and lovely gold tones in light, rectangular shapes match the gold, contemporary cabinet pulls and sink faucet. With the modern black composite sink located in the island, the hosts will always be a part of the party while entertaining. The professional-style range is topped by a modern built in range hood, stained to match the cabinetry.

An arched, black metal door with frosted glass is the gateway into a large, walk-in pantry and is an attractive accent to the great room from the outside, with a fully custom-built interior containing shelving within for maximum organization and storage. Deeper into the pantry is a hidden entry to a metal framed storm shelter, completely concealed by a movable wall of shelving.

Around the bend from the great room is a bright laundry room with tile floor and a fully functional work sink. The

hall leading from the great room to the garage has a long mudroom area with a cozy bench for putting on your sneakers in the summer and boots in the winter, with storage above and below.

The main floor bathroom is beautifully designed, with an elegant wall of celadon tile and a wall-mounted vanity with a marble top and vessel sink with gold and black accents on the mirror frame and plumbing fixtures.

Heading up to the second level, the railings on the stairs to the second floor and interior balconies showcase a whimsical triangle motif inside the black metal frame. A bright gold metal pendant fixture lights the way from above.

The roomy staircase is carpeted for warmth and to buffer sound with a contemporary texture and pattern which is repeated in the cozy den off the upper landing. A floor-to-ceiling black wall frames the oversized, wall mounted TV, and a wide glass fireplace stretching across below. The area is flanked on either side with stacked-stone floor-to-ceiling pillars. The effect of this texture combination is warm and inviting, but the most interesting element is the black, glass barn door mounted above the entry for sound and privacy, and the cabinet storage and countertop area, with beverage fridge below and thick wood-stained floating shelves above.

In the primary suite, the heated wood plank flooring carries you into an expansive oasis of relaxation including large windows to enjoy the beautiful views and a door to the second-floor patio. The floors in the bathroom reveal large porcelain tiles with undulating tones of grey and white that lead you into the walk-in tile shower. The same tile extends up the walls with a coordinating hex pattern on the shower floor and a bench and wall of contrasting textured tile, picking up the warm wood tones of the bathroom cabinetry. His and hers vanities with a storage tower nestled between them incorporate a warm, natural-wood tone with clean, white quartz countertops. The plumbing fixtures stand out in a deep gold tone, coordinating with the wall sconces, towel bars, and cabinet pulls. Clean, rectangular mirrors are framed with LED lighting gives them the appearance of floating. Walking through the primary bath you reach the large, carpeted primary closet equipped with a builtin closet organizational system and a window for natural light.

The additional en-suite bedrooms have expansive windows and centered, gold-toned overhead light fixtures and full-closet built-ins. One bedroom features a walk-in tile shower and the other a convenient tub/shower combo. The soft grey and beige tones continue in the flooring tile while the combination of natural wood vanities and gold and black trims continue to punctuate the spaces.

Are you looking to update your lighting system in the near future? If so, you might be considering older types of lighting that are common right now, like CFL and fluorescent bulbs.

However, there is a newer and better type of modern lighting that you might want to consider – modern LED lighting. Here are some benefits of modern LED lighting!

Design Flexibility

Modern LED lighting offers tremendous design flexibility. LED lights come in a variety of colors and have built-in dimming capabilities, which makes them perfect for accent and task lighting.

You can also use them to create ambiance in different areas, or use its dimming features, colored gels, and subtle variations of a white light design to create different ambiances. Manipulating the color, intensity, and direction of the light ensures that each room can have its own unique atmosphere.

Furthermore, LED lights are available in flexible and robust forms. You can use it in a range of shapes and sizes that provides maximum design flexibility.

Long Lifespan

Modern LED lighting offers a long lifespan compared to conventional lighting options. This is a tremendous advantage, as it allows homeowners and business owners to save money in the long run.

LED lighting can last up to five times longer than fluorescent lighting and up to 30 times longer than incandescent lighting. This means fewer lamp replacements and less maintenance costs over the years. LED lights can have a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours — or nearly six years — of continuous use.

No Danger of Burning

With LED light options, there is no danger of burning as with halogen or incandescent lighting. This is because LED lighting produces far less heat and is nearly instantly turned on and off due to its feature of low voltage. It helps provide additional safety measures as there is no need to replace hot bulbs or risk of burns.

By: ArticleCity

Additionally, due to the heat-reducing feature, LED lighting can be placed in even hard-to-reach areas. You won’t have to worry about causing a fire hazard.

Energy Efficient

Modern LED lighting offers superior energy efficiency over traditional incandescent lighting. LED lighting utilizes up to 90% less energy than traditional lighting, meaning it will use less energy throughout its lifespan. The energy efficiency of the lighting also results in less heat output, making the room more comfortable.

Environmentally-Friendly

LEDs create light much more efficiently than traditional lighting technologies. This leads to significant reductions in energy consumption and related emissions.

LEDs also create no heat, preventing energy loss due to heat dissipation. They do not contain hazardous materials such as Mercury or Lead, which is a major environmental consideration. This means that LED bulbs are much easier to recycle than their traditional equivalents.

Upgrade to LED Lighting Now

Modern LED lighting has revolutionized every area of lighting. From its energy-efficient and environmental benefits to its cost savings, it’s one of the best options out there.

So what are you waiting for? LED lighting technology is transforming the lighting industry. Invest in LED lighting now to reap all of its benefits in the long term!

This beautiful home at 2809 E. Augusta Circle in Brandon is a zero-entry, single-family villa with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 1,629 square feet for simple and functional living. Slab-on-grade homes are on-trend for those 60 and older incorporating thoughtful design, easy-care materials, and elegant fixtures. “Homes like this are big right now for people who don’t want stairs anymore or are starting to downsize. They also don’t want a condo situation or an HOA, but still want to feel part of a traditional neighborhood,” says Nick VanOverschelde of VanOverschelde Custom Homes. “These homes provide breathing room and less upkeep, with very nice features.”

The exterior is designed with a combination of horizontal siding and stacked stone in variegated shades of warm brown, punctuated by crisp, white trim and natural wood posts. The wood posts repeat in the back of the house as support for the covered patio area, with natural wood planks as a ceiling detail.

Entering the home, you can enjoy a bright and inviting foyer with dramatic, high ceilings, large windows, and welcoming grey walls as you pass into the light-filled, open floor plan. These color tones are reflected in the wide plank flooring with an in-floor radiant heat system, which draws you into the great room. There are several materials and textures that help to create the feeling of warmth in each of the combined spaces. The living room is anchored by a fireplace with a stone facade and a natural wood mantle, while the adjoining dining room has a floor-to-ceiling feature wall of shiplap in a complementary color.

The kitchen cabinetry reflects a warm wood tone that blends easily with the wall colors, while contrasting black granite countertops, plumbing fixtures, and cabinet pulls make a statement. The center island features seating for four and the kitchen sink creates a functional work area that opens into the living room. The soft, white horizontal brick-tile backsplash gives a nod to the traditional, while the black accents feel clean and modern.

Glass and iron light fixtures accent each area, from the entry hall pendant to the matching island drops, to the dining room six-light chandelier and the sleek, black ceiling fan in the living room.

Between the walls of cabinetry is a full walk-in pantry behind a crisp, white door which matches all of the interior doors in an attractive two-panel T style. Two hallways off the main living space takes you to three bedrooms at one end or an oversized, heated garage and mechanical room which doubles as a storm shelter on the other.

“All the mechanical rooms double as storm shelters with 8-inch concrete reinforced walls,” Nick adds. “South Dakota still sees some tornadoes, and that was a big concern for many of our clients when we started to build these homes without basements. These storm shelters offer homeowners quick access and that extra peace of mind.”

Just inside the entry from the garage is a mudroom with a long bench constructed of wood with a granite seat, matching the kitchen. Above, there are convenient wall hooks for coats and

winter accessories with storage cabinets above. There is a whimsical herringbone tile pattern on the floor that continues into the laundry room.

The spacious primary bedroom and closet are carpeted for a cozy feeling, and nothing is more comforting than a heated, tile floor in the primary bathroom! There is a full, built-in closet system in the walk-in closet for maximum storage and clever organization.

The color and material combinations in the primary bathroom are elegant and sumptuous, with warm cabinetry contrasting the white solid surface countertops and striking black fixtures. The walk-in shower has a spa-like feel with the floor to ceiling vertical pattern in the large format ceramic wall tiles.

The secondary bedrooms are also carpeted, with wall tones that offset the clean, white base molding, door, and window trims to perfection, as they do throughout the home. Both have ample closet space, and the secondary bathroom has an inset tub-shower combination for ease of care and a black vanity with a vibrant, white

top, all pulled together by a charming, octagon-pattern ceramic tile in undulating shades of grays.

Lighting is something that you typically notice when it’s really good or really bad. Many homeowners make the mistake of not having enough when it comes to lighting. Sometimes, certain events at your home call for different lighting. (Think an evening cocktail party.) People often wonder if they can mix finishes in their rooms (do the light fixtures in my kitchen need to match the cabinet pulls?). With so much to consider, here are some of the trends people are loving now!

ON TREND

CHANDELIERS

The classic overhead fixture has come a long way! Chandeliers can be had in contemporary designs with updated finishes.

Warm metals are popping up everywhere! Think of fixtures made of rich copper (hammered or raw copper exude a natural beauty, while a satin finish feels luxurious) or brass. Brass fixtures can be polished, aged or burnished. The varying patinas give totally different looks! Brass is definitely making a comeback.

Gold tones (especially rose gold) are also hot. Like its brass counterpart, gold doesn’t always have to be shiny and bright.

ON TREND

“Vintage” is one of those oft-overused words. When it applies to lighting trends, there’s a little “upgrade” from the typical looks that celebrate an older, industrial age. Some fixtures really showcase sleeker materials and modern technology. Sure, fans will still see the natural colors, rustic finishes and simple designs that have come to define vintage lighting.

The sleeker materials make the lights feel more thoughtful in design and less “I found this old bucket, hung it upside down and screwed a lightbulb in it!” Vintage lights work well in the kitchen and as wall lights or sconces.

VINTAGE VIBE

MIXED METALS

It’s like wondering if you can wear a brown belt with black shoes. Can you mix metals when it comes to your lighting choices? The short answer is yes. Mixing metallic design elements can be achieved by doing it within a single lighting fixture or even within a larger design environment.

The key? Make your choices look intentional. Put some thought into it. One of the areas you can look to “mix” it up is the actual texture of the fixtures. Consider mixing hammered, matte and even polished finishes for a layered, rich look. You might also consider mixing warm metals (gold, copper) and cold (silver, chrome) metals.
