BRINGING GL ASS TO THE FOREFRONT By: Michaela Feldmann

Drinking a glass of wine, applying makeup, reading a book or shaving your beard. No matter what your beauty or spa routine is, the bathroom is one of the most important rooms of your home. And making it shine bright and look pristine is the job for a doctor – the Glass Doctor that is. “Justin bought the franchise in 2008. He had his own glass business for 10 years before that. In 2008, we really just started with auto. But since then, we’ve just grown into putting glass about anywhere you can think of.” That included flat glass, commercial, wine rooms, mirrors, table toppers, showers and railings and even floor mats for desks.

You can see their exquisite work throughout Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. That includes this show-stopping home at 9504 West Lakeside Circle. As you walk into the primary bathroom, the incredible work will leave you breathless. “That is a really, really incredible space. The absolute coolest thing we did in that bathroom is right in the center of the room.” Your eyes can’t help but be drawn into this unique glass design. Connected to one wall is the star of the show – the huge and incredible glass-enclosed standing shower. Two black showerheads cascade warm water down your tired shoulders and beautifully contrast the bright white color of the bathroom walls. wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 9

“Personally, I think it’s the best part of the bathroom – maybe the best part of the house. Even though the shower takes up much of the space in the center, it really is so beautiful.” The design offers a clean, walk-through feel. One side of the half-glass, half-wall separates the shower from the soaker tub. The glass provides a lot of light – ensuring this space does not feel like a big dark, damp hole in the middle of the bathroom. Rather, it gives a super airy and light feel to the room. “We are really seeing a change in what people are wanting in their bathrooms – especially when it comes to the shower. In the past, it used to be just a sliding door or a panel. Now we are seeing more of our beautiful glass come into play. Like this house from Top Construction. There is glass surrounding you on all sides versus just one side like in the past.” Glass Doctor says that change is likely due to the influx of designs touting an open-concept layout. “A lot of people are doing that open concept throughout their homes. That doesn’t just stop at the kitchen, dining room or living room area. We are seeing that come to life in the primary bedroom and bathroom with glass.” Another trend they’re seeing in homes, and one that is beautifully showcased here is zero-entry showers. “I think these are perfect. The idea is that it would age with the couple. As people get older, their needs change and you don’t want to have to try to get over a threshold in your shower. This allows whoever owns the house to grow into it and not have to do another renovation down the line. It offers such versatility to accommodate any life change.” Highlighting the beautifully encased shower and continuing this unique vibe, is a his and hers vanity on either side of the shower walls. “It is really cool that whoever is using that bathroom, will have their own side. It still feels as if it is one cohesive room. But there is that separation of vanities. They’re not small either. They’re very spacious and bright.”

With ample countertop space and a large, glass mirror, the separate his and hers vanities are perfect for any couple. “Another trend we are seeing is mirrored cabinets or glass insert cabinets. It keeps with that same open feel where people can sort of display things versus just putting them in a cabinet and forgetting about them.”

Trends continue in this bathroom as you’ll find textile, patterned tile on the floor. “In the past, we were seeing a lot of the ‘rock feel’ - really early 2000s or late ‘90s vibes. But things have definitely gone away from that. Now it is really focused on bringing that elevated, expensive and sophisticated look to your bathroom.”

Bringing that expensive look to reality often means the use of quartz which gives a bathroom a sophisticated, marble feel. “Quartz offers what marble offers, but even better. Marble is extremely porous, and it degrades quickly over time. You can have a lot of etching and have issues with that. This bathroom in Sioux Falls features a really stunning quartz back wall made with Cambria Quartz. It just pulls that whole room together I think and elevates it even more.” And there’s no project that Glass Doctor shies away from. “Anything unique we really love to take on. Justin likes a challenge. He likes to do something different or unique. Curved glass like in a shower can bring that challenge. You have to make sure everything is so exact. Everything is harder to line up than just a regular rectangle. You have to make sure everything pieces together perfectly.” Another unique space they’re seeing glass is on stair railings. “We really have started to do a lot of those. People are putting them into their catwalks, their back patios and porches. I think it’s about bringing the outside in and not having such a wall of separation.” So, wherever you may want to put glass, they’re up for the challenge. “Nearly every day we are talking to customers who have a project that we haven’t seen or done before. We really love it when people bring us their ideas or their issues to see if we can fix them or help bring that project to life. Some people are like ‘I’ve always dreamed of doing this. Is it possible?’ And we just love finding out if it is.”

LUXURY By: Michaela Feldmann | Photos By: Evan Hackett

We’ve all heard the phrase “home sweet home.” That saying is even more true as you take in the incredible home at 5601 Daybreak Circle in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, built by WT Homes. This amazing location boasts a breathtaking curb appeal the second you lay your eyes on it. As you make your way to the front door, the warm, welcoming tones throughout this two-story modern, farmhouse invite you to take a step inside. Immediately you’re immersed in natural light from the wall of windows from Builder’s Millwork in the living room and kitchen ahead of you. White and brown colors surround you, from the floors by Thornton Flooring to the incredible cabinetry work by Dakota Kitchen & Bath. “That is what really sets this house apart for me,” says Becca Tschetter. Becca owns WT Homes with her husband Willie and helps to bring beautiful spaces to life. “Originally, the plan was to install carpet in spaces such as the bedrooms and basement area. As the process went on, we, as well as the client, just didn’t feel like it was the right fit, so, we did beautiful wood flooring everywhere instead. That just turned out so stunning, especially down the staircase.” Those same warm tones span the 3,524-square-foot home and are accented by darker, moodier hues in the kitchen, fireplace and office space, giving you the best of both worlds. “If I had to choose myself though, I would lounge in the office space. Not only is this room perfect for work productivity, but it also creates a sense of peace, comfort and reflection, which benefit both efficiency and overall well-being. The moodier ambiance can also be such a great vibe.” wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 21

Any one of the five bedrooms and three and a half baths can also call to your restful soul, but the primary suite will leave you speechless. The tray ceiling frames an elegant chandelier fixture, while the large windows showcase incredible views of the enormous backyard. But the primary bathroom is what sets this space apart.

floor-to-ceiling tiled walk-in shower. There’s plenty of space to get ready and pamper yourself with the double vanity sink. Sliding doors open to the spacious backyard living area and the outdoor pergolas draw you in with its shade and beauty. Another perfect spot to eat, sit, talk or play games. In no time, you’ll be sure to find your favorite spot in this modern, farmhouse at 5601 Daybreak Circle in Sioux Falls South Dakota. SEYKORA REMODELING: Turning “Before” into Happily Ever “After” By: Sarah Grassel

Seykora Remodeling is a leader in the construction industry. Jason Seykora and his team are one of the few local companies that focus on and specialize in the niche market of residential remodeling. With more than 25 years of experience in the industry, Jason has one goal: “Make the remodeling process as easy as possible for our customers so they can have the result they envision.” Prior to starting Seykora Remodeling, Jason worked for and learned from other local contractors, many of whom are still in business today. Through those experiences and incredible learning opportunities, Jason developed a love for building. “I still love watching projects evolve through each stage. There is just something about seeing a project go from vision to reality, knowing that we were a part of that transition. I’m not sure it will ever get old,” Jason expressed. Jason is a Sioux Falls native and attended the University of South Dakota while continuing to work for a local contractor on school breaks. Following the completion of a Mass Communications degree, Jason continued to work for and with local contractors; he knew that sitting behind a desk or working in an office was not where his passion was. In 2007, Jason’s first construction business, a partnership, failed. “That was tough. You think you have it figured out, and then you don’t. It was time to pivot, for me and for my family.” One month before his first child was due to be born, determined to turn his passion for building into a career, Jason took a leap of faith and started Seykora Remodeling. “I was on my own as a one-man crew for nearly five years but was fortunate to have the best customers who referred me to their friends and families. The business continued to grow steadily, and in 2013, I made the decision to hire my first full-time employee in order to keep up with our expanding workload, as well as continue to offer the quality our customers deserved,” Jason revealed.

who work hand in hand with customers to get each project across the finish line. “I can’t say it enough, I have the best team. We know each other well. We know our strengths and our weaknesses, and we know how to be efficient to meet our goals.” Jason and his team specialize in remodeling rather than new builds and generally turn their focus to residential projects over commercial work. “Ideally, our customers are living in a neighborhood they love, but are ready to make some upgrades to their current home. Many of these projects include multiple improvements the homeowners want completed. Some of our customers move out and complete all of their ‘honey do’ list in one shot, but most customers complete their list of projects over time,” Jason said. “One of the things that makes our company unique is the daily customer interaction. Unlike new builds, our customers are almost always living in their homes while our team is demoing and rebuilding. Because we see the homeowners, and their families most days, it is important that the contractor/homeowner relationship is a good fit for everyone.” Seykora Remodeling continues to grow and is always looking forward to working with new and existing customers on their next project. From replacing old windows to kitchen renovations or luxury pool houses, no two projects are ever the same, and no project is too big or too small for Jason and his team. Learn more about Seykora Remodeling and the full scope of services offered on their website.

Today, the company still has that first employee, Jeremiah Lohrman. “Jeremiah is someone I trust and rely on. If you do a project with Seykora Remodeling, you will work with Jeremiah at some point,” Jason said. In addition to Jeremiah, Jacob Peterson has been with the Seykora Remodeling team for seven years. Jason and his team are also incredibly proud to work with a long list of trusted and tenured subcontractors and vendors. Jason attributes a large majority of the success of Seykora Remodeling to the loyal employees and partners

Built by Copper Creek Construction, this home brings a sense of peace the moment you walk up to it. The beautiful black and white colors bring a farmhouse style to it with a unique floor design and a three-stall garage for an ample amount of privacy. Immediately you are greeted by a cozy front porch as large, brick pillars envelop you on either side. Size is not an issue as a huge six-foot-wide hallway and 10-foot dramatic tray ceilings are on display as you step into this 3,186-square-foot home. That unique floor plan is showcased right away as a bedroom and main bath to the left and office space to the right greet you before you even enter the living room. “It’s not something we have seen very much of,” says Greg Schut, owner of Copper Creek Construction. “We wanted to do something a little different to Sioux Falls. Everyone walks into a big open living room, but this floor plan brings the usually hidden areas like a bedroom and office toward the front of the house.” As you stride down the white oak flooring, you’re led into what Greg calls the center of it all. Here you find the living room, kitchen and dining room all in one – an area where you can all gather together. Large windows, courtesy of Andersen Windows, usher in natural light that begins to envelop you as you make your way to the living room, where earthy tones 34 n December 2023

continue to be on display. A big stone, gas fireplace from The Fire Emporium calls your cozy spirit as you dream of curling up with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine. As you look to your right, your eye is drawn to the kitchen with dazzling quartz countertops by DMC Waterjet. White subway tile backsplash runs the length of the countertops and gas range stove and highlights the shaker-style cabinet doors from Bullseye Custom Cabinetry Inc.

Custom metal welded handrails guide you to the other side of the room once again. Here you have three options. The first will be to take in some fresh air as we step outside onto the beautiful floating deck. This is a spot that’s set to be one of your favorites for gazing at breathtaking views. “It’s really this big, beautiful and open space that’s pretty much going to stay the same. We saw some deer out here the other day. It’s just so peaceful and the great view goes all the way to Veterans Parkway.”

“I’m a trim carpenter by trade,” says Greg. “So, I really make it a point to take a lot of As we head back inside, we make our way time with the millwork and make sure it’s to the primary suite in this five-bedroom all right and looks beautiful.” home. As you step out of the steaming shower, there’s no need to go far. The big custom walk-in closet with drawer banks draws you in to find the perfect outfit. A few more steps and you’re ready to wash your clothes in the connected laundry room. “I like the convenience of it all being connected in the primary suite,” says Greg. “You don’t have to drag your laundry all over the house. Everyone has a busy life and I try to lay out the houses to coincide with that.” The downstairs offers another sense of coziness and escape. This big, open area is perfect for another family room as the towering electric fireplace brings added warmth. It’s five o’clock somewhere with your own bar near the back of the room! The cozy vibes continue down here with two more bedrooms with walk-in closets to greet you as you look to get off your feet. Here you’ll find another full-sized bath with a double vanity sink and even more storage space under the stairs. “I just like how cozy this house feels. No matter where you are, you just want to curl up.” It is here at 1508 N. Marlowe Ave. in Sioux Falls that anyone would find their true happy place.

REVITALIZED BY: EMILY POGUE

For Shawn and Shelley Callies, owners of Callies Homes, Inc., crafting the perfect home is more than planning the structure; it’s about meeting the client’s needs for usability, durability and atmosphere. And they’ve been building on those important tenets for nearly two decades. Initially starting out with renovation projects for their family members, Callies Homes has grown and established an amazing reputation for well-designed and expertly crafted builds that are both beautiful and functional. That legacy of cumulative skill and attention to detail led them to revitalize a well-known home in the heart of their hometown. The idea for this project started 13 years ago when a gorgeous 1920s-era foursquare went up for sale on Section Line Street. At the time, the Callies family was looking to return to their hometown of Howard, SD from Sioux Falls and had been searching for a property they could rent while simultaneously renovating it. They were familiar with the Section Line house and were up for the challenge of an older home but unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right. Instead, they purchased a home just up the street and resumed building the life they envisioned. Since then, their homebuilding and renovation business grew and years passed as other projects were completed. Then a couple of years ago, an opportunity arrived that allowed them to purchase the Section Line Street property and finally transform it into a four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom modernized masterpiece with vintage visage. Plans to rehab the home included supplementing the footprint with an addition and breathing new life into its old features.

Vintage

With the home being in various states of undoing when they purchased it, there were many things to restore or rebuild. Custom oak cabinetry was added to the bare kitchen layout while quartz and granite countertops, new windows, solid oak doors and meticulous tile work were installed throughout the home. The front porch was rebuilt to include beautiful and durable composite decking. The home was also in need of more space, so the Callieses built an addition that gave them twice as much square footage. This added footprint consisted of a hidden walk-in pantry, a two-stall garage, a mudroom, surplus laundry facilities and a spacious primary en-suite that included a walk-in closet, tile shower, double sinks and a separate closet/toilet room. They found and installed cedar siding on the addition that was very similar to the look of the original and a composite deck was added at the rear. While they knew there was plenty that needed to be completely redone, they wanted to salvage and use the original features as much as possible without compromising safety or functionality. In addition to sanding and staining the existing oak wood floors and trim, they also revitalized the original beauty of the colonnades, restored two sinks, scrubbed and painted the register grates and repurposed a fuse box for modern-day use. A hutch that had remained under a tarp on the front porch for years was in surprisingly good shape but was no longer usable in the same location. The team found the drawers and hardware in the basement in equally good shape so they relocated it to the new pantry as a statement piece. With gorgeous oversized millwork throughout the existing parts of the home, they wanted to replace the damaged pieces and repeat in the

addition which could have meant a lot of money, research and time. But the Callies team was ready. “Since we have our mill machine, we were able to match the trim to use in the addition and for any broken or missing pieces,” says Shelley Callies. “It’s uniform throughout, which I think is pretty cool and a big deal.” Beyond their amazing craftsmanship, the Callies Homes team takes pride in understanding the needs of their clients for both the feel and function of their spaces. Whether it’s the perfect place for a broom closet or motion-sensor lighting in the bathroom, every design is well thought out and beautifully executed. And the Callies team is there for every detail, decision and task along the way. “We subcontract a few things but do so much of the entire build project and we’re fast,” says Callies, when asked what sets them apart. “We mill our own trim and frame up the house. We do a lot of the dirt work, install cabinetry and flooring, tilework, siding and design the floorplan. And we help along the process so that it’s not so overwhelming because there are so many layers and decisions.” And the renovation of the Section Street house was more than just making an old house usable and attractive again. It was personally important to the Callieses to invest in the community they were raised in and the place where their children would grow their roots. This project also took on a lot of meaning for community members who requested and received an Open House invitation to see the transformation. To say it was well-received is an understatement. People were able to see the rebirth of a cherished home, share stories of its previous occupants and events and marvel at the renewed beauty and function of a beloved fixture of their community. Not only are they experts in all the decisions and details of residential builds and renovations, but Callies Homes is also adept in commercial and one-of-a-kind projects, too. They just finished the demolition and rebuild of a floral shop in Madison and are adding onto and renovating an old church in Volga to include an elevator, a stone fireplace and a dreamy kitchen with breathtaking woodwork. Whether it’s a new build, renovation or addition, the Callies Homes team takes pride in performing each step in the process with integrity and care. Each project they take on is equally well-designed and skillfully crafted by their experienced crew. To view their Section Line Street renovation project or some of their new builds, feel free to send them an email or visit their Facebook page for more information.
