Transform Your Bathroom Into a Luxurious Retreat
Bathrooms are no longer just functional spaces; they’ve become personal sanctuaries designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. The latest trends in bathroom design reflect this shift, offering homeowners a chance to create their own spa-like retreat.
One of the most popular trends is the frameless glass shower. These sleek, minimalist designs open up the space, letting in natural light and creating a modern, airy feel. Many homeowners are enhancing these showers with features like rainfall showerheads, body sprays, and even steam options for a spa-inspired experience.
Freestanding tubs are another trend that continues to dominate. Whether classic clawfoot or sleek and modern, these tubs add an elegant focal point to the room. Paired with calming materials like stone, wood, or marble, they create a serene atmosphere perfect for unwinding.
Warm, earthy tones and natural elements are trending as well, with materials like wood, stone, and greenery bringing an organic, tranquil vibe to the bathroom. Smart features are also on the rise, including heated flooring, touchless faucets, and mirrors with integrated lighting and defogging functions.
If you’re feeling inspired to upgrade your bathroom, the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire can connect you with trusted professionals who can make your dream retreat a reality. Imagine having resort-quality recreation and luxury as close as your own backyard. In Sioux Falls’ Cherry Lake West Development, NRG Homes has built an executive custom home where every day feels like a vacation.
NRG Homes specializes in energy-efficient, upscale homes that meld custom luxury and chic style. NRG Homebuilders Shannon and Tonya Grismer are known for their distinctive, sought-after homes, and their expertise in construction and design is showcased in each home they build.
NRG Homes’ recently completed lakeside home on Boathouse Circle is particularly exceptional because it incorporates a variety of recreational activities the homeowners requested for their family. The Boathouse Circle build is a first for the Grismers because it includes a multi-use pickleball court.
“This particular family puts in a lot of hours at work, so they really wanted to feel like they’re on a little vacation when they’re home,” Tonya explains. “They wanted everybody to have anything they needed right there. Their home is going to be their place to hang out.”
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom, 5,252-square-foot house is a practical family home that devotes plenty of space to recreation and relaxation.
The active homeowners’ backyard is a destination for outdoor sports and fun, and much of the yard is dedicated to the pickleball court. Shannon says NRG Homes followed pickleball guidelines to ensure the court was the proper size.
“We did everything from the concrete to the net to painting the lines, which is something nice with NRG Homes. We will do everything from start to finish,” Shannon adds.
The pickleball court’s adjustable net makes it usable for volleyball, badminton and tennis — though the court is regulation size for pickleball. Completing the backyard are a pool, patio and Astroturf lawn, while a long stairway and stone path leads to a lakeside dock.
The four-stall, fully finished garage is equipped with a complete kitchen, and the family can enjoy views of the lake from a deck that overlooks the backyard.
Indoors, a downstairs big-screen TV room is equipped with acoustical paneling, a full bar and custom designed wine vault. The vault’s glass doors provide a clear view of the homeowners’ beautifully displayed wine collection.
Upstairs, 26-foot vaulted ceilings soar over the great room. Curl up by the fireplace to watch TV or read a book and enjoy the scenic views through the home’s many large windows.
The home boasts two bedroom-bathroom suites, luxury Cambria countertops throughout, designer wall treatments and abundant natural lighting from large windows upstairs and down.
“This house has a timeless feel to it. It’s got traditional style with some modern features that work really well together,” Tonya says. “The traditional-looking kitchen is black and white. It turned out beautifully. That was mentioned in many of the comments we got during the Parade of Homes. The house has a cohesive and comforting feel when people walk through it. It’s inviting and timeless.”
In addition to building homes that are beautiful and functional, NRG Homes has established itself as a company committed to being environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The award-winning company uses Structurally Insulated Panel, or SIP, construction in their home construction. The panels are made from wood or plywood with core foam insulation in the middle. SIP panels’ use of building science and high performance reduces noise, air movement, drafts, and dust and allergens in homes.
“It’s what our company specializes in,” Shannon adds. “We show our customers the importance and benefits of using of SIP panels. SIP panels used to be more expensive than stick building, so we have to show our customers their return on investment. Now with lumber costs the way they are, SIP panels are far more cost effective, which is awesome.”
“SIP constructed homes are more energy efficient, stronger and quieter,” Shannon explains. “You’re recouping the benefits from the first day you’re moving into the house.”
Triple-pane windows in each NRG Homes home contributes to the energy efficiency, especially in South Dakota where the wind loves to blow. Even when wind speeds top 50 mph, the Boat Circle house is quiet.
“Our houses are so tight and quiet you really have no idea what is going on outside,” Shannon adds. “Between us using SIP panels and triple-pane windows, you are getting the best of the best. With the weather conditions we deal with in South Dakota, I don’t know what else could be better.”
Shannon has more than two decades of experience and a genuine passion for the construction industry. His background is in building single family homes, twin homes and villas.
Tonya offers clients her impeccable design prowess, selecting flooring, cabinetry, lighting and more. “I have always loved the building process,” Shannon says. “Tonya has a keen eye for design. … Our customers rave about her.”
The Grismers pride themselves on giving customers personalized service and excellent communication throughout the entire home-building process and beyond. NRG Homes only builds one or two homes per year to ensure they provide exceptional service.
“We really do put 100 percent of our time into one house
at a time, and it’s a detailed process. We make sure every vision is just what the client is dreaming about,” Tonya says.
The relationships that NRG Homes develops with their customers is a satisfying part of each home build.
“We both feel that what’s different with us, along with the energy efficiency, is that we form strong relationships and friendships with all our customers, and that means something to us. They’re like family to us,” Shannon adds.
“No matter who builds your house, there’s going to be an issue somewhere down the road, and our customers know they can pick up the phone and call me and I’m going to handle it, and that’s the relationship you should have with a builder,” Shannon explains. “I value our company and I want it to be around for years to come.”
For anyone contemplating a custom home, it’s never too early to meet with a builder and start planning, Shannon says. There’s currently one lot remaining in the Cherry Lake West Development.

Located in the Canterbury Heights Development at 5600 Markham Circle in Sioux Falls, this estate home presents a stunning blend of modern lifestyle amenities and traditional charm.
Encompassing 4,744 square feet, this elegant multi-level custom home boasts five bedrooms, four baths, and an oversized garage with four stalls and ample natural light. Exquisite features are diffused throughout the home, including the centerpiece staircase leading to the second and lower floors, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the landing and dramatic paneled walls in a soft, black tone. The stairs are accented by modern, horizontal metal railing, leading up to a floating balcony and hallway that feels like you are on the upper deck of a luxury liner.
The home’s exterior features a natural stack stone facade with charming horizontal board siding, bronze framed windows, and contrasting light-painted trim. These striking details flow seamlessly throughout the home’s vast covered patio areas, making this house perfect for outdoor entertaining. Contrasting textures carry inside the home as well in the combination of the warm wood, wide-plank flooring, and floating wood shelves, and the ceiling beams, decorative tile, and areas of painted and natural wood paneling. The large open spaces of this home are connected by clean, modern white walls, with several spaces punctuated with dramatic black surfaces on feature walls and whimsical, bronze/black light fixtures.
Crafted by the talented team at Jeren Homes, their personal approach to construction is expressed in this distinctive home. Owner JJ Myott believes a new home should include what is the most useful and functional for the owner as well as what makes their home unique from others. “We at Jeren Homes feel the same way about our work on every house,” JJ says.
Entering through the inviting front door you will find yourself in a light-drenched, open, and multi-level living space. The center of the house has soaring ceilings and huge windows framing an expansive view. Beyond the main entryway is the bright living room with a two-story ceiling height, accentuated by the floor-to-ceiling white-stone fireplace and contrasting smooth black walls on each side. The space is grounded by the symmetrical custom cabinetry flanking the fireplace and four floating wood shelves and a chunky wooden mantle. Winter nights will have you gathering in the living room around the large screen TV, set into a niche above, to watch your favorite family movies.
The open floor plan continues into the adjacent dining area, then turns the corner into the large entertainer’s kitchen with a large island in a light gray tone and plenty of storage, surrounded by three walls of custom floor-to-ceiling white cabinetry. The professional grade appliances are stainless steel, featuring a 72” refrigerator
and freezer, and an induction cooktop. There is a convenient walk-in pantry, outfitted with open shelving for easy access to everything.
The contemporary, yet timeless, solid surface, marble countertops will make cooking, entertaining, and cleaning up a breeze, while the stunning, white-tile backsplash in a handsome herringbone pattern adds elegant charm.
Off the kitchen and to one side is a convenient laundry room and an exit into the large, epoxy floor garage, allowing easy access for groceries, school backpacks, or luggage. On the other side, three steps down take you to a light-filled room with 12-foot ceilings for a private home office. This room, in contrast to the rest of the home, has a black ceiling and walls, accented by a rustic wood accent wall, continuing the warm wood flooring and picking up the same vibe through the ceiling beams.
The black and white theme flows into the first-floor powder room with a black vanity and a white marble top. There is a silvery, hexagon tile feature wall and a black-framed mirror with a graceful, curved top that is accented by stunning black fixtures.
The primary bedroom suite features floor-to-ceiling black wall molding, a repeated detail, on the bed wall. The ceiling in-set reflects
the warm wood of the floor. There is an expansive walk-in closet, fully built-out for maximum storage, function, and a clean, modern look. You can say the same about the large primary bathroom, with its white cabinetry, black-framed mirrors and plumbing fixtures, contrasting the large white tile floors and featured shower walls.
Turn around and you will discover a shower/tub room with a luxurious free-standing bathtub and rain shower overhead. The white wall of the shower is in a glistening white-brick tile with large, woodtone ceramic tiles on the adjacent walls. This room is filled with light streaming in from the well-placed windows high enough for privacy and a long wall of clear glass enclosing the water closet.
Upstairs there are three softly carpeted bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open loft area for homework or play. Each bedroom is unique with either chair rail and panel molding in white or pale grey walls, both with walk-in closets and large windows, making the rooms bright and cheerful.
The beautiful centerpiece staircase also leads from the main living floor to a lower level, which is full of surprises for the sports and fitness-minded family.
First, you’ll find a large open family room with a full wet bar, counter seating, and beverage fridge. The black-washed wood cabinetry supports white solid surface counters, and the back bar wall has textured grey bricks up to the ceiling for a cozy touch. With a TV placed over the bar and a large screen in the carpeted seating area, no one will miss an important play of the season’s big game.
Down a short hallway you will find an amazing indoor sports court with a 20’ high ceiling and natural light streaming in from high windows placed on three walls. It has a polished wood gym floor and the markings of a half basketball court.
On the way back into the family room, step down into a private custom workout
room, with an absorbent rubber floor and mirrored panels on the walls just waiting for your mats and free weights! On this level is the final of the five, carpeted bedrooms, and a full bathroom with seashell toned mosaic tile walls.

Are you sick of your old, outdated bathroom? If so, are you ready to renovate this room?
While experts claim that people only recover 57% of the costs spent on a bathroom remodeling project, investing in this room might be well worth it if you plan on living there for a long time.
But, what should you do if you’re remodeling a small bathroom? Fortunately, you can do things that drastically improve the looks of even a tiny bathroom. Additionally, you can take steps to make this room look bigger.
Consider the Layout
You might want to consider the bathroom’s layout as you learn how to remodel a small bathroom. For example, do you like the layout? Does it work?
The layout describes where you place the fixtures and controls the space and flow. You can keep the same
design when renovating your bathroom or change it.
Keeping the same design might help you save some money and time, but changing it might open up more opportunities for improvement. Therefore, you might want to discuss this with your remodeling contractor.
You might learn that moving things around could provide more space in this small room. If so, changing the layout during the project might be worthwhile.
The next tip to consider is hanging fixtures. You might wonder what this means, as they’re not the most common type of bathroom fixture.
A hanging bathroom fixture is a device that hangs on the wall. For example, you can purchase a hanging toilet, which a contractor mounts on the wall instead of the floor. The same is true with hanging sinks.
Placing a hanging fixture in a small bathroom helps you save space. To learn more about saving space this way, you might want to compare the amount of space a traditional toilet takes to a hanging one.
Your bathroom contractor might recommend installing the largest mirror possible in your small bathroom. Mirrors offer reflectivity qualities, which means they bounce light around.
You can install mirrors in all the rooms of your home to make the rooms appear larger. For example, putting a large one in your bathroom will naturally make the room size appear larger than it is.
You might also want to add an extra mirror or two on the empty walls in your bathroom, as this also helps.
Another one of the top bathroom remodeling trends is glass shower doors. If you have a bathtub in your small bathroom, you likely have a shower curtain on it. Unfortunately, while shower curtains are pretty, they also hide the tub.
The result is that they can make a small bathroom look even smaller. Your small bathroom will appear much larger if you trash the shower curtain and install a glass door instead.
Glass doors work well for showers and bathtubs, and you can find them in all sizes.
Finally, you might benefit by focusing on better storage options. A small bathroom might not have a lot of storage, but that’s okay. You can use creative options to have the storage you need.
For example, instead of using a bathroom vanity with a cabinet and drawers, you can choose a pedestal sink. Then, you can place a hanging shelf on the wall in the bathroom to use for your storage needs.
You can look at more bathroom remodeling ideas for more options, and you can also talk to your bathroom contractors to gain new ideas.
