Car enthusiasts from miles around will head to Deadwood for Wild Bill Days, where a showstopping collection of classic vehicles is a star attraction during the annual celebration of infamous gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok.
The 10th annual Wild Bill Days Classic Car & Summer Toys Auction opens at 10 a.m. June 15th at the Deadwood Mountain Grand. McPherson Auction Co. of Rapid City runs the auction that gets bigger every year.
“There will be about 75 to 100 of the area’s finest classic cars, trucks and summer toys that we’ll be selling at the auction,” states Kevin McPherson.
“There will be consigners, vehicles and (outdoor recreation) toys coming from several states — Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona to name a few,” Kevin explains. “We’ll have buyers coming from all those areas plus further away. The auction will be broadcast on our website with simulcast bidding so you can bid from wherever you’re at.”
The collection of vehicles at this year’s auction promises to be dazzling, with some vehicles at previous auctions selling for $100,000 or more. “There’s some very desirable cars and pickups we’ll be selling. Some will need a little bit of restoration work, and some are going to be finished products. We’ll have a little bit of something for everyone at the auction,” Kevin shares. “Some of the cars will be sharp, sharp cars.”
The Wild Bill Days auction over Father’s Day weekend is an ideal time to include summer toys. Kevin anticipates boats, jet skis, golf carts, side-by-sides and four-wheelers could be in the auction, and buyers will have all summer to enjoy their new outdoor recreation vehicles.
It’s also a less-crowded event for car enthusiasts than McPherson Auction’s annual classic car auction during Kool Deadwood Nites.
“It’s been fun having both of the auctions growing at the rate they’re growing. We enjoy working with the Deadwood Mountain Grand, the City of Deadwood and the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce in promoting the events,” Kevin adds.
Buyers and sellers at the auction often like the camaraderie as much as the classic cars.
“It’s always a great time. There’s a lot of people that know each other that come to the auction. It’s almost like a big family reunion of car enthusiasts and people that really enjoy Deadwood,” Kevin reflects.
McPherson Auction also sponsors the popular Wild Bill Days concerts. This year’s concerts kick off with Ivory on June 13 and conclude with headlining country music stars Aaron Tippin on June 14 and Pam Tillis on June 15.
“We help sponsor the free concerts to get people to come to town and have a good time,” Kevin says. “We’ve had people come to Deadwood with the intention of going to a free concert and maybe gambling a little, and then all of a sudden, they found the car of their dreams at the auction and ended up buying a car. That’s happened more than once.”
McPherson Auction and Realty Co. is a pioneer in South Dakota and in the auction industry. The company was founded by Dale McPherson in 1949 will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2024. After Dale’s passing in 2023, his sons Kevin and Todd have taken over the company operations and carry on his legacy.
“It’s a family business,” Kevin shares. “When we have the big car auctions, all the family is involved — my wife and kids, my brother and his kids. It’s a family affair and everybody jumps in and helps out.”
Between them, Kevin and Todd have eight adult children, some of whom fly in to assist with the Wild Bill Days and Kool Deadwood Nites classic car auctions. Kevin’s daughter, Bergen, works in the McPherson Auction Co. office year-round.
of learning experiences dealing with divorces, bankruptcies, dissolved business partnerships, and estates when sometimes the family is fighting.”
The diversity of the auction business appeals to Kevin.
“That’s one thing I’ve always really enjoyed is all the people we deal with and all the different situations. We’ve learned a lot of street smarts,” he adds.
Dale McPherson got started in the auction business in Sturgis in 1949 and the company has evolved as a frontrunner in the auction industry, Kevin explains.
“There really weren’t sound systems back then, so you just had to use your voice and make
some noise,” Kevin remembers. “We graduated from that to having online-only auctions and having thousands of buyers worldwide, and we’re constantly sending and shipping items all over the country.”
“We’ve been leading the auction profession in the online auction business. It shifted toward online about 14 years ago,” Kevin adds. “We were leading the industry and still do in the online auction business.”
Dale was a charter founding member of the South Dakota Auctioneers Association and an active member and past director of the National Auctioneers Association, an organization that also started in 1949.
Dale convinced the State of South Dakota to try live auctions — versus the sealed bid process the state had been using — to sell surplus equipment. The results were successful and lucrative,” Kevin states.
After the 1972 Rapid City flood, Dale presented Rapid City leaders with the idea of selling flood-damaged but salvageable houses. Kevin said houses were sold and moved all over the state and the nation.
“If you stop and think about it, there’s not a lot of people that can say they’ve accomplished all that,” Kevin says of his father’s trailblazing work in the auction industry.
Currently, McPherson Auction Co. conducts about 150 auctions every year throughout South Dakota and in neighboring states. The company typically auctions real estate, farm and ranch equipment, construction equipment, large estates and, of course, classic cars and trucks.
“The longer you’re at it, the more you’re going to learn, and we’ve definitely gained a lot of experience. This is what we’ve done all our lives. It’s been good. It’s been fun,” Kevin shares.
Along with the auction, Wild Bill Days is a weekend filled with many fun and family-friendly events from the Dock Dogs competition, gold panning, live reenactments, history on the Lawn, live music, rodeo events and more!
James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok was one of the original band of outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers who came to the Hills after the discovery of gold in the late 1800s. Hickok is probably the most famous Deadwood resident, even though his visit was shortlived. You can visit his gravesite at Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Quite often today I am amazed at how many different directions automotive type advertising has gone when I compare it to what was shown on television starting in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Some of the earliest ads evolved as simple song-type jingles you would hear on radio, which eventually moved to television for more of a visual message as more of the public bought TV’s. The ads were boasting in ways comparing spaciousness, comfort, and ease of driving certain automobiles so much, that even a woman could maneuver it with confidence wherever she needed to go.
Advertisers even played up the idea with standard transmission cars, which most were then, that using the clutch was easy allowing a person to accelerate away from a stop sign without effort and shift with ease up to highway speeds. Most cars then were large inside which enabled six adults to be in a vehicle comfortably at one time, and even some station wagons could hold eight or nine adults with the addition of a rear-facing third seat. To me, it always seemed weird to be riding in the third seat of a station wagon facing backwards and watching where you had been, rather than where you were going.
This pretty much happened prior to the mid 1960’s before seat belts were introduced. An all-too-common sight to see with a family going on vacation then was a station wagon loaded up with luggage to the ceiling in the back end, with kids bouncing in the back seat with excitement, while dad was focused on the road in front of him with both hands on the steering wheel, while mom was looking at a map in her lap and pointing ahead. Can you believe no stress ever happened in that picture with the kids continually asking, “Are we there yet?” To this day, I just want to get where I am going at the speed limit without any delays so I can slow down at my destination and enjoy it. The ads for today’s cars either show them drifting or smoking the tires down the street, all of which will get you in trouble, or they promote the big push for electric cars with this socalled green idea that I really think will not happen leaving manufactures hurting with their unsold, electric versions of autos. As far as I am concerned, gasoline is forever to go any distance, in any weather, in a certain time frame.
In the spring of 1988, Jim Stansbury found and bought a 1956 Chevrolet two-door hardtop behind a building on north Cliff Avenue in Sioux Falls. He was excited about being the third owner of this turquoise and white car that originally came from California that was pretty much complete, but needed a little TLC. After driving it for a few weeks and locking it in their home garage, they started toying around with ideas. Jim’s and his wife Cindy decided they wanted to have it more to their own liking by changing the car’s paint color. Cindy wanted it blue and white while Jim wanted red and white. With wanting to make this happen, Jim took the car completely apart, trim and all except for taking the glass out while readying it for paint. I think time got away as Jim put himself behind the eight- ball hurrying to get the car painted and back together so he and his wife could attend the “Back to the 50’s” event in St. Paul, Minnesota, which was a week away. I don’t know how it happened, but Jim painted the car red and white on a Monday. He must have gotten a deal on the red and white paint and today wishes he would have painted it blue and white. Now, note the time frame while realizing that the car was painted on a Monday in the morning, and later on, that same Monday afternoon towards evening, a fellow car buddy, Charlie Hollingshead, stopped by and started helping Jim reassemble the entire car back together, doors, fenders, hood, trunk lid, interior, wiring, I mean everything. Together they thrashed on it for three days and on Thursday they were on their way to St. Paul for the “Back to the 50’s” event.
In 1994 Jim bought a Chevrolet 350-crate engine and installed it in the ‘56 along with a 700R4 AOD trans, which really enabled him and his wife to really put some real miles on the car with lots of smiles where ever they go. Even though they have a couple miles of gravel between their farm in the country and the highway, it doesn’t detour them from hitting the highway as they have done over the years. So far, they have driven their ‘56 to Salt Lake City in Utah, Dallas, Texas, Nigra Falls in New York, Detroit, Michigan, and more to come I am sure all while getting 22 mpg at 80 mph.
The title to my story certainly fits what Jim and Cindy are doing with their ‘56 and was one of the more commonly heard very clever TV ad jingles in the 1950’s and 1960’s sung by Dinah Shore. So go, “See the USA in your Chevrolet,” America is asking you to call, Drive your Chevrolet through the USA, America’s the greatest land of all,” just to quote the first part of the jingle which says how blessed we really are to have that freedom to drive wherever our hearts desire. Jim said he has been a car guy all his life because of his father and really enjoys driving their Chevy to go anyplace. Besides collecting other old cars, Jim’s favorite hobby is collecting South Dakota license plates from every year making him the guy to see if you need some to keep your vehicle era specific and rolling down the open highway with old school enjoyment.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE TRUCK/WHY YOU CHOSE THIS TRUCK. WHAT’S YOUR TRUCK’S STORY?
We picked this up as a project so my boys Cooper and Payton could learn how to build something with their hands. A friend of mine was going through a divorce and needed money, so she offered it to us, knowing that we were looking for a project. We went to get it and everything from the firewall forward was in the box, except for the engine and radiator support. We reassembled it from there modifying what we wanted as we went.
Our friends in the group, Badlands Rods, have affectionately and appropriately named it “The Smoke Machine” for its penchant for unleashing any smoke that is trapped inside the tires, especially if a kid says, “Do a burnout!”
FAVORITE PART OF THE TRUCK?
I love how it rides, especially on the long cruises. It floats down the road like a cloud. The only change I would do is the Vintage Air set-up since it gets so hot here in August.
My friend dared me to put an eBay mini spool in the 12-bolt rear end, so for the low price of $36, it was no longer a one-wheel wonder!
Rebuilding a spare engine is the most recent plan, and future plans include body work, paint, and A/C to stay cool in the summer.

The following are some of the most common habits to avoid when taking your ride for a cruise. These tips may not only help you avoid unnecessary expenses but also prolong the lifespan of your car.
1. RESTING YOUR HAND ON THE GEAR STICK WHILE DRIVING A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE
Every time a gear is changed, a selector fork inside the gearbox comes into contact with rotating parts to select the gear. Resting your hand on the gear stick while it is in gear may cause you to unintentionally apply pressure to the selector fork and other internal parts. Such small yet constant pressure on the gearbox starts to displace synchronizers and gears. This seemingly harmless habit can speed up the wear and tear of gearbox components, leading to noisy or crunching gears or even a possible failure to select a gear.
2. DRIVING WITH LOW GAS IN THE TANK
Driving with a dangerously low tank will contribute to breaking your fuel pump as it is not cooled down by the fuel. This will inadvertently cause the fuel pump to quickly heat up which can cause it to break. When the fuel pump is burned out, you will not be able to start the car. As a result, you will be looking at a pretty hefty repair bill to undo this.
When your car is in a static state, mechanical impurities may accumulate in the fuel tank and sediment will form at the bottom of the tank. You risk sucking the ‘dregs’ into the engine when your car is in motion, possibly resulting in poor running performance and potential damage to the car in the long run.
3. FREQUENT BRAKING
If you keep braking unnecessarily, you better be ready to set aside a hefty sum for regular brake pads and brake disc replacements. There is no fixed standard or benchmark on the duration your car brakes should last. It ultimately depends on the quality of the installed components and the handling of the car by the driver. To avoid unexpected accidents, remember to promptly change the brake hoses when you detect that it is no longer functioning at their optimal level. Also, remember to keep your eyes on the brake fluid level and get it refilled as and when necessary.
4. SKIPPING REGULAR MAINTENANCE SESSIONS
By adhering to a regular servicing schedule, not only will you have a safe and dependable vehicle, but it could also minimize the chances of nasty surprises and breakdowns. Of course, a well-maintained car with full services record will also get you a significantly better price when you eventually decide to sell.
5. NEGLECTING TO USE THE HAND BRAKE
This principle applies to cars with automatic transmissions. When you park your car on a slope, the entire burden falls on the lock gear of the output shaft of the gearbox. To successfully park on an incline, hold the foot brake and shift into park, then pull the handbrake,

Quality: a degree of excellence. This has been our top priority ever since I opened my doors almost 30 years ago and is still our number one priority today. Quality can have many faces, but it is always our intent to give our customer our very best in everything that we do for them.
From the engine tear down, cleaning operations, all measuring and evaluation, engine development, machining processes and procedures, parts cleaning and preparation, engine assembly, and all the way through the engine break in and tuning we always take great care and give our best so that top quality is achieved.
Here we understand that a machine shop is where human desire and actions meet mechanical operations to result in a finished product. We believe if you have the passion and education, you provide a high-quality product and that is why we take great care in every aspect of your engine build.
In today’s world the thought is that a machinist loads up the work, turns on the machine, presses start, and then you have the finished product. That may be what you get from a machine operator, but not the certified engine machinists at Sehr Performance.
Here, we devote our hearts and minds into all that we do with the education, critical procedures, and processes to ensure the best for our customer and the engine we are building for them. We do this for every project from the quick piece job to the complete dyno tuned engine job.
Another aspect of providing top quality work is the machining equipment itself. We put together a parade of proper and accurate machines to provide the best and most accurate work possible. The procedures we use are also another aspect of top-quality work we provide. Many of these processes are time consuming and a little more expensive to provide, but it is in the best interest of the finished product and provides more value for your dollar in the engine build.
Along with high-quality engineered equipment we use only top quality cutting bits, stones, machining oils, and cleaners to aid in our quest for the highest quality. We calibrate our equipment often and that is essential in providing accurate quality.
The calibration of our micrometers, dial indicators, set up gauges, bore gauges, milling bit placement, torque wrenches, engine dyno brake calibration, and all our electrical machine units like our scales, balancers, RA testers, sonic testers, spring testers, calipers, and thermal cleaning units is all done regularly.
The calibration and cross referencing of all measuring equipment is designed to ensure that the accuracy of our work is always at top level and we are diligent in their maintenance.
The Extra Mile. Dedicated to Quality. Devoted to the Craft. Not just taglines, these are part of the reason Sehr Performance is the top choice for top quality engines. where we are passionate and care about your engine build just as much as you do.

Did you like to play with tractors, bulldozers, and shovels as a kid? Graduates from Lake Area Tech’s HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR PROGRAM will enter into a field that has a high demand for qualified workers in commercial and industrial construction, heavy equipment operation, and earthmoving equipment operation. Students entering our Heavy Equipment Operator program will choose from a diploma in Excavation Operations after 11 months or an Associate of Applied Science degree in Heavy Equipment Operations after completing the entire 20-month curriculum.
Students will learn to maintain and repair tracks, wheels, brakes, operating controls, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, electrical circuitry, and engines as well as skills in excavating, digging, ditching, sloping, stripping, grading, backfilling, clearing, crane operation, and excavating. They will also operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment such as crawler tractors, motor graders and scrapers, shovels, rigging devices, hoists, and jacks.
Lake Area Tech grads are averaging $27.48 per hour in this field and that’s just six months after graduation. Additionally, people retiring from this field will create even more job opportunities for new graduates. Heavy Equipment Operator is a high-demand workforce program and students may be eligible to earn a full-ride Build Dakota Scholarship.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Dear Motor Medics,
You guys make it easy for us when we need to repair our cars and I’m hoping you can shed a little light on a purchase question, too. I have narrowed down my search to two vehicles that are relatively the same except that one is a front-wheel drive while the other is all-wheel drive. The AWD drive vehicle has 10,000 more miles but has the extra feature, so it is priced the same. I don’t see a lot of snowfalls in my area and until now have managed to get by every season with nothing more than a FWD car. If I go with the all-wheel drive system, will fuel mileage suffer significantly, and will the overall maintenance cost be a lot higher?
David Manhattan, KSDear Motor Medics,
I recently purchased an older Chevrolet Monte Carlo with about 130k miles on it equipped with the 3.1 engine. The car runs great, but when the engine is cold, I hear a very loud banging or tapping sound until the engine is thoroughly warmed up. The sound is not as pronounced when the temperature is warm outside, although it is still there. I have consulted with a few people including GM technicians who tell me that this engine is known for this cold start noise, which is caused by piston slap and that this is considered normal. Is there something I should or could do to minimize this? Are any engine oil additives that would help this?
Darrin Brainerd, MN
Dear David,
You will have to make your own decision as you will be the one making the purchase, but we can hopefully help you a bit. All-wheel drive vehicles get around better in the snow than their front-wheel drive counterparts, but if you are in an area that does not see much snow or ice and they plow it quickly, do you really need it? The fuel mileage will be a little lower, there will be slightly faster tire wear, and there are more parts to wear out. While the front-wheel drive is not as nimble in snow, a lot of people give that up for the savings they gain in other areas.
Dear Darrin,
What these technicians have been telling you is correct. These engines tend to make noise upon a cold start, and the colder the engine the louder the noise. Some people fear they are going to fly apart because they are so loud. With age they tend to become worse, but we can’t recall one that has come apart because of it. As a mechanic and current owner of a vehicle with this engine, I’ve tried everything I can in the way of engine oil additives and haven’t found any that make even the slightest difference in the way it sounds, so I’ve learned to live with it as many people with these cars have had to do.
Take care, The Motor Medics
Our team of talented technicians recently completed a total restoration on this beautiful 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Essentially a stock restoration, many details accent the classic early ‘70’s vibe…take the 8-track tape player and the “Keystone Klassic” wheels, for example. Other details such as Dakota Digital Gauges and FiTech Fuel Injection update the car with today’s technology. Great choices all the way around!
