“As I was motivatin’ over the hill I saw Maybellene in a Coup de Ville A Cadillac a-rollin’ on the open road...”
-Chuck Berry, 1955
By: Tanya Manus A real-life Maybellene is cruising through the Black Hills. The car is a 1949 Cadillac Roadster series 62, combined with parts of a 2014 Cadillac CTS, a modified fuel tank from a 1968 Camaro, a removable hard top and many other distinctive customizations. The car’s owner, Luke May of Spearfish, is a former auto industry technician who is now the operations manager for five dealerships in western South Dakota and Wyoming. He discovered his custom Cadillac by following its progress for about seven years on allmetalshaping.com as the car was built.
“There’s only one in the world. Everything is custom on it. Every panel has been created from scratch,” Luke said. “The man who built the car was a BMW and body shop technician for 40 years, and this has been his retirement project.” When Maybellene finally went up for sale, Luke bought it “after about a year of looking at it and negotiating until I got it,” he said. “I started chasing it … and it was just August 2023 when I actually got it.” “I’ve had a series of cars. I only have garage space and money and time for one at a time. I really like different and unique cars,” Luke said.
This particular 1949 Cadillac captivated Luke because it is so unusual. “It’s such a work of art. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. I love that it has modern running gear and is sort of a meld of old and new, and to still have it look so unique and art deco and beautiful was very interesting,” Luke said. “With modern running gear, I can drive it every day.” “It has suicide doors — that’s usually a surprise to people that the doors open backwards. The interior looks like a 2000s modern Cadillac. That’s unexpected,” he said. “The lights all look old but the guts to the lights are all custom fitted modern Cadillac lights.” JA N U A RY 2 0 2 4
9
Though he doesn’t use the car as everyday transportation, he drives it often. “I’ve put 2,000 miles on it since I got it just driving around the Black Hills,” Luke said. “It’s not perfect. It’s built to be driven.” Luke names all his cars, and the Cadillac got its moniker during a ride through the Black Hills. “When I first had this car delivered, I took my wife out (for a drive) in Spearfish Canyon and I was trying to think what is the name for this car. ‘Maybellene’ by Chuck Berry came on. It fits well, and my last name is May,” Luke said. “It was fun. It fit perfectly. I got a custom license plate that says, ‘Maybellene,’” he said. “I drive all over the Black Hills and I enjoy sharing the car. I love having kids sit in it. I’m hoping to inspire other people to enjoy this hobby and passion for it. In the summertime, I go to as many car shows as I can,” he said. Luke said he’s had a lifelong passion for cars. “My mom says I cut my chin on a Tonka toy and got it in my blood,” he chuckled. “Cars and trucks have been part of my work and hobby for my entire life.”

THE EXTRA MILE
Today we like to talk about engines with big power, big cubic inches and often include a wide variety of exotic power adding components. It is exciting to see these engines built with exotic components and with precise detail. We must not forget however where the engineering originated from and give the proper respect to the power makers of the past. These grandfathers of horsepower are still alive and even though they don’t make the big horsepower numbers of today they are still very relevant to the vehicles they power and they’re important to the history of the automobile. Rebuilding these engines can be a daunting and time-consuming task. There is a very limited supply of engine parts for many of these engines and when the parts are available they can be very costly. If the parts are not available, then they must be made and that will add to the cost as well, but the end result will be a better running engine.
The first thing is to do the proper research and determine what the engine design was intended for. The second thing is to determine if the engine will run on today’s fuel. The third thing is to find or build the engine hard parts to complete the build. The machining processes of today are much more accurate and precise than those of yesteryear. Because of this we are able to precisely fit the new engine parts and often these parts are made with today’s technology so it can increase power, torque, and reliability. Since we have a much better knowledge of how the engine works, we are able to make improvements that will have the engine running better than new. Finding machining engine specifications can also be a challenge so if they cannot be found then we must create them. Certain machining procedures and updates must be done like valve seats and valves, piston rings, cylinder hone, piston rings, gaskets,
and full complete block preparation just to name a few, among the many. Assembly procedures are also different in today’s engine building world. For example we must convert the rod bolt torque that Henry Ford created of “what an average man can pull with an eight inch wrench” to an actual accurate tightening specification. We need to consider piston and bearing clearances that will recognize the fuel and engine oils of today since these are considerably different from when these engines were originally in service.
So if you have an engine in an older car that needs to be updated to give you the freedom and reliable service for the years to come that you expect, then you can rely on us here at Sehr Performance to give “the Extra Mile” to achieve that goal. People come from all over for our engine update rebuilds because we do the work that is required for the best optimum build.

D I G G I N G D E E P I N H A N D S - O N E X P E R I E N C E S AT L AT C Lake Area Technical College prides itself on offering cutting-edge programs with nearly 100 percent placement in the workforce after graduation. One program, in particular, heavy equipment operator, is digging deep and exploring new opportunities to provide students with hands-on experiences with multiple aspects of the field.
Second-year student, Joseph Noeldner from Watertown, has grown up knowing about LATC. In high school, he wasn’t sure what he was planning, but he ended up with an opportunity due to COVID that steered him into making the decision of pursuing his education and career through the HEO program at LATC.
Steve Henningsgaard, heavy equipment operator instructor, says, “Hands-on participation pushes the students’ abilities and makes them think and care about how the project looks when they are done.”
Joseph explains, “I was given the opportunity to run a dump bed trailer and loader in a small gravel pit where I fell in love with the work. I quickly saw, with more training, I could make this into a very frugal career.”
Projects in the HEO program are run with real-world situations and companies. Therefore, students have to consider the presentation and make sure the job isn’t just done correctly, but they need to ensure the project looks nice. “Operation is so much more than just driving a machine,” Steve continues. “Students need to understand different soils, compaction, plan reading, as well as project management.”
“The HEO program has given me that training, and more importantly, confidence, to run a variety of equipment and obtain my CDL,” he adds. The heavy equipment operator program can be completed in 10 months or two years. Those who opt for the first receive a simple diploma, versus an alternative associate degree in applied science. According to Steve, the majority of the time is spent

LATC has a large fleet for students to use over the course of their program. They also lease several machines each year. Some of the equipment they have purchased include: • CatSim simulators • Cat D5G Dozer • Cat 320 Excavator • Cat 627 Scraper • Cat 140M Blade with a GPS • Liebherr 716 Dozer with Trimble GPS • Bobcat Skidloader • Ford Dump Truck • JD Skidloader • Kubota Skid Loader • Lowboy Trailer • Mack Semi-Tractor • IH Semi-Tractor *This is not a complete list.* If you are interested in reading a little more about the program, visit www.LakeAreaTech.edu.
in the field rather than in a classroom with the exception of several theory, safety and simulation courses. After getting the chance to sail through simulations and gain an understanding of the safety techniques required for operating heavy equipment, students are turned out on projects in the Watertown area for local people and entities. Steve says proudly, “Projects are done 100 percent by the students - from stripping the topsoil to final grading. However, I stress to the students that their learning does not stop when they finish our course. It takes time in the seat to become a good operator, and their education continues when they begin their new jobs.” Some of the projects that the students have completed or participated in include a campground on Lake Kampeska, construction of a road, a parking lot for the local fire department’s training facility, grain bin sites, driveways, building sites and many demolition jobs.

Tell us a little about the car/why you chose this car. What’s your car’s story? Growing up my dad always had muscle cars mainly Chevelle’s and mopars so at a young age I became addicted to cars. I always had a soft spot for Pontiacs but I loved the mopars especially the chargers and the wing cars! My dad always talked about a high school friend having a yellow Plymouth Superbird and growing up there was always a story of a wing car sitting in a barn so between that I really wanted a wing car. I remember in the late 90’s when I was around 9 years old my dad, brother and I went for a drive and like always we talked about cars and I mentioned someday I’ll own a wing car and my dad and brother both kind of laughed at the crazy idea of me owning one! My brother replied “and how will you get one??” I had no idea how I would ever be able to afford one but I said “I’ll find a way.” Fast forward to 2019 by this time I was graduated from high school went to a trade school had a steady job and a decent car collection! Mainly Mopars with a few Pontiacs and a 1968 Oldsmobile 442 convertible along the way. I still had a strong desire to own a wing car but watching the price steadily climb well into the six figures my dream was slowly starting to fade! I made the decision that owning a real Superbird or Daytona was more than likely not going to happen so I decided to build a 69 charger Daytona clone out of a charger I had. As I was building the car I needed a front fender and I was looking all over for one with not much luck until I had a guy message me one day saying he has a fender he would sell me and if I’m interested he has a 70 Charger R/T SE he would sell if I’m interested! Me being a huge charger guy I had to go check it out! We ended up striking a deal on the 70 charger and after I loaded the car into my trailer the owner asked if I wanted to check out his first car and I said sure so I followed him into his garage which was divided in half and
Y O U R
the door was sheet rocked over with a pull string to open it.. seemed odd but didn’t think too much about it and as I walked in I could see his old 30’s Chevy that of course sported a 383 big block Mopar and painted B5 blue (Mopar color). We looked over his car and then he said “Mark aren’t you going to ask what this car is??” I looked over at the pile of tarps and sheet rock and I replied “I didn’t even know there was a car!” Then he said it’s my Superbird!! To this day I’m pretty sure my jaw hit the floor in pure shock!! I then asked what color is it?? He replied Lemon twist yellow which was the color I always wanted and to top it off it had a 4 speed transmission with the iconic pistol grip shifter! We talked for a while but I had to get back on the road to head home but the entire drive back my wife, brother and I were in shock with what had just happened! A few months went by and I kept in touch with the Superbird owner and one day I decided to ask if he would ever be willing to let the Superbird go and to my amazement he put a number on the car. I had to sell a couple cars but for my dream car it definitely eased the pain in seeing them go. Ironically the weekend I purchased my superbird was the same weekend as the 50th aero warrior reunion which was the largest gathering of Superbirds and Daytonas. The car was off the road since at least the early 80’s. It was partially restored with the engine bay and trunk area being painted. The previous owner dumped some gas down the carb and the original 440 came to life! First time since the early 2000’s. The previous owner never put a mile on the car but he kept the car inside and stored it properly so the car never got weathered by Wyoming’s harsh winters. I told the previous owner I would restore the car with my dad and brother and once it was back on the road I would enjoy it with the family just like my dad did when I was a little kid. Needless to say I was excited to get the wing car on the road again and just under a year my family and I had it restored and back on the road looking like it was brand new again.

What’s your favorite feature? I love the fact the car was designed for one thing and that was to race the high banks of nascar speedways. The 1969 charger Daytona (dodges wing car) was the first to reach 200 mph in nascar. The pointy nose and tall wing might seem odd to some but it all had a purpose and it was to cut down on the wind drag.
What plans do you have for this car? My plan is to keep driving and enjoying the car with the family and making memories.
Additional Comments? Interesting fact people may not know: The nose cone is steel, fender scoops are fiberglass, has a special window plug with a specific Superbird back glass window and the wing is built out of aluminum with braces going from the wing to the trunk floor so it can handle all the down force. Only 1,935 Superbird’s built in 1970. This Superbird sold new in Havre Montana. HAVE A RIDE YOU WANT TO SHOW OFF? SEND YOUR SUBMISSION TO FLINT@MICHELSCOM.COM. MOVIE/TV CARS Anyone who has been around for the last 60 years has seen many movies or tv programing that involved the hero with a vehicle, good or bad. Over the years, even up to today, those types of shows have been quite influential with people trying to recreate a certain movie vehicle to drive and enjoy along with the attention it gets. Some vehicles seem to be a little easier to recreate than others because of cost. One car that would be really expensive to recreate today would be the Batmobile, built originally by George Barris for the Batman series starting in 1966. Hollywood producers approached George since he was a well-known local car customizer and gave him three weeks to remake over a 1955 Lincoln concept car, which was very expensive to begin with at the time as a starting point, into a movie icon which he did. Because of what George did with redesigning the concept car, and building 4 other identical cars as back-ups in case something happened to keep the series going as a continued
success, he wound up owning the original Batmobile. He had that car until 2013 when he sold it at a Barrett Jackson auction for record 4.6 million dollars. Some of the other vehicles that George has had his fingers in creating for Hollywood include the “Munster Coach”, “ Kitt” the talking Pontiac Firebird from the Night Rider series. The “General Lee”, for the Dukes of Hazard series, The Starsky and Hutch Torino, the Green Hornet, and the “Monkee Mobile”. In the “Dukes of Hazzard” series, a 1969 Dodge Charger was turned into the “General Lee” that made more jumps and chase scenes than any other Hollywood vehicle. During the run of the series, because so many of the cars were destroyed doing the scenes, 335 were built to continue on with the series. A lot of cars wasted here, but I have seen hundreds of recreations over the years of this same General Lee. Another car that I have seen many recreations of is John Miner’s yellow 32 Ford coupe from the “American Graffiti” Film. That yellow 32
Ford just seems to fit the innocent time frame that so many of us grew up in. The green 1968 Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in the “Bullitt” movie was another impressionable movie! The list goes on with cars people make a connection with and want to have. Mike Pfeil is no stranger when it came to an automobile making an impression on him while watching the Starsky and Hutch series in the 1970’s when he was a kid. Like most of us who watched tv series regularly then or went to movies, it was always fun to see how cars played a part in shows and kind of became the stars with doing what ever the driver wanted them to do. For Mike, being a Ford Guy since he started driving, I have to think this was kind of special seeing a Ford Torino become the star on a tv program. Ford Motor company also saw the car become the star thru the series’ first year showing and decided to build a factory production “Starsky and Hutch” limited edition
of the car for the public. Only 1305 limited editions were built in three months in 1976 with various engine/ transmission combinations to help feel the market. Only a bit over 100 survive that are registered today. Mike watches the Torino page on Facebook pretty regularly and saw one of these factory produced limited production cars come up for sale in July of 2022 in Omaha. So, he called the number listed immediately and visited about the car with the owner. As information about the car came out over the phone, the owner told Mike if he was interested, he needed to show up in Omaha that same day before 500PM, otherwise the car was going to be shipped off to Boston the next day. No pressure here, right!! Anyway, Mike dropped what he was doing and headed out to see the car in person right away. Upon arrival, he saw the car was everything in excellent condition as described over the phone and got more history
about the car which proved to be interesting to say the least. Initially the car was bought new off the showroom floor in 1976 by a policeman who worked for the Omaha Police department. Before the police officer took possession of the car, he had the dealer “Z” bar the entire car, inside and out, to protect the metal from rust. He had it for a few years then sold it to a female co-worker in the police department who also didn’t drive it very much. She had kept it in a garage but didn’t cover it which led to the paint getting faded on one area because of a garage window letting sun light in. So, she had it professionally repainted to look like new again which is the way it appears today. After a few years she sold it to another family who had it for quite a while, again not driving the car very much because of its value, which led Mike up to getting the car from the last family. The 47-yearold car has only 49,000 actual miles on it and it is like new top to bottom the way it came from the factory. I asked Mike if he thought he
bought the car right to which he answered by saying, “ I sold my Harley and my 2006 Yellow Mustang convertible to pay it off. Ya just can’t have everything!” Then he commented about having this dream car when he was young, and now that he is old, none of the younger people understand. I always tell people don’t worry about what other people think or say as long as YOU are happy with your decision. From what I have seen on line about this limited production car, I think Mike made a great investment from a childhood desire from so long ago.

How to pick the right tires
FOR YOUR SUV (BPT) - Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are now the dominant vehicles on U.S. roads, making up more than half of new car sales for three years running, according to J.D. Power. The SUV segment has become as diverse as it is large, ranging from threerow luxury vehicles to sporty crossovers to off-roading powerhouses, and similarly, SUV drivers are far from a homogenous lot, putting their cars to a variety of uses.
FOR THE ROAD WARRIOR: A COMFORTABLE, ALL-SEASON TOURING TIRE - DYNAPRO HPX
FOR THE DAILY DRIVER: A HIGHWAY TIRE - DYNAPRO HT
Drivers who rack up the miles in their SUV don't want to compromise comfort for performance, or handling for tread life. They need an all-season touring tire that can offer smooth, comfortable driving in a variety of weather conditions, and can stand up to tens of thousands of miles on the road.
So if you are among the millions of SUV drivers in the U.S., you need to ensure your vehicle is equipped with the right tires for the job. Hankook Tire's Dynapro line-up is designed to offer SUV (and light truck) drivers a complete range of tires for all conditions and journeys. Here are five types of tires, from on-road cruising to offroad adventuring, that SUV drivers should consider based on their driving needs.
Hankook Tire just announced an all-season touring tire, the all-new Dynapro HPX, delivering great braking and handling performance in rain and light snow, while also minimizing tread pattern noise to maximize the cabin experience. It also comes with a 70,000 mile warranty and is designed to last 12% longer than competing tires.
Drivers focused on school runs, office commutes and the occasional road trip for vacation need a tire that can be relied on all year round without breaking the bank. An allseason highway tire that offers a generous mileage warranty ensures the tires will deliver good bang for their buck. And with all-season reliability, these tires can be trusted to keep drivers and their passengers safe in a variety of weather conditions that most of us will face throughout the year.

RELIABLE
FOR THE DIRT ROAD ENTHUSIAST: AN ON- AND OFF-ROAD ALL-TERRAIN TIRE DYNAPRO AT2 XTREME Some drivers love a mixture of Sports and Utility from their SUV - they enjoy taking their vehicle off the beaten track on weekends and commuting to work on a Monday morning with fresh mud stains on the fender. An all-terrain product that mixes aggressive design with onroad comfort helps drivers tackle gravel and loose surfaces without having to deal with the dreaded tire drone when they're back in civilization. FOR THE OFF-ROAD EXPERT: A RUGGED TERRAIN TIRE - DYNAPRO XT More dedicated off-roaders might be looking for a tire they can fit to their SUV when it's time to hit the trails. A rugged terrain tire can handle steep profiles, off-camber environments and even rock crawling, on a variety of surfaces from grass to dirt to sand. The ideal rugged terrain tire will offer rigid block patterns and deeper grooves to handle these conditions, whether they consider themselves overlanders or desert explorers.
FOR THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: A TOUGH MUD TIRE - DYNAPRO MT2 SUV drivers looking to tackle the toughest terrain need a tire that can handle everything from the deepest mud to the roughest rocks. This class of tires should offer extra protection from chips and tears on gravel, massive treads to deliver ultimate off-road traction, and ejectors that release mud and stones to maximize grip. No matter what drivers are planning with their vehicles, the wide range of SUVs in the U.S. marketplace is now fully complemented by a rich portfolio of tires for everything drivers need. Hankook's Dynapro line-up offers a broad range of performance characteristics to meet these needs, for drivers keeping their wheels squeaky clean or spending their Saturdays winching through the woods.

Dear Motor Medics, I am in need of a third set of intake gaskets on my car in an eight-year period. I now have 150,000 miles in my car and the first set went out at 40,000. I have searched the internet and found countless people with the same engine style in their cars and vans with the same issue. How can the manufacturer have so many failures out there and not have a recall on them? I have owned other cars with recalls for things that weren’t even broken, and I could not find anyone else with the issue, these gaskets are almost an epidemic with no recall. Why don’t they recall them?
Dear Motor Medics, My business purchased a brand-new vehicle and during the delivery at the dealership they told me to bring it back to them for all service to ensure the warranty will remain in effect. They did not tell me directly that the warranty would be void if I had it serviced elsewhere but they strongly implied so. I have been a faithful customer of another dealership for many years, but my company decided to go with this model and being a company supplied vehicle that is free for me to drive I must live with their choice. They do give me the choice of where to have my service work done as I live 80 miles from that dealership. My question to you is, can they void my warranty because I have my general service work done elsewhere? This is my first car I have driven that has had any kind of warranty at all. My personal cars have all been 3-5 years old when I buy them.
Bart Owensboro, KY Dear Bart, I know what you mean. I too own a car that I’ve had to pay for repairs on myself many times over and I felt the parts should have been designed better. For a recall to be issued complaints must be filed with the government safety office and then they are investigated to determine if they are safety related which could cause consumer harm. Recalls are not usually issued if there is no safety concern. A manufacturer does not have to repair a vehicle out of its warranty period unless a repair is deemed to be a safety hazard and a recall has been started. On occasion, some manufacturers have extended warranty coverage as a good faith measure to retain customers.
Belinda Fridley, Minnesota Dear Belinda, The dealership would love to have you back for all your service work. They can assure that you can get all the services that you need to take care of your car, however, so can almost any independent repair facility out there. You could choose to have your non-warranty work performed anywhere if the parts used meet or exceed factory specifications.
Take care, The Motor Medics
