Lynn Martin was born and raised in Sioux City, graduating from Leed High School in 1961. He raised his family in the town he grew up in, enjoyed fishing and loved classic cars, especially his cherished red 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle 300 Deluxe sedan. For both Lynn and now his son Kristopher Martin, this particular car holds not just sentimental value but also an intriguing journey through the decades. Purchased new on June 5, 1965, the Chevelle became an integral part of Lynn’s life until he had to part with it in 1980 due to divorce-related matters. Little did he know then; the car would find its way back to him exactly 40 years after its original purchase.

A muscle car from the golden era of high-performance rides, the 1965 Chevy Chevelle 300 Deluxe stood out as a unique model due to its relatively low production numbers, making it a rare find among classic car enthusiasts. The car also had a unique body style featuring clean lines, a straightforward profile and a simple yet elegant front grille. Its practical and balanced design set it apart as a classic mid-size sedan during the mid-1960s.

The 300 Deluxe was Lynn’s very first new car purchase during his early 20s and was ordered directly from a Chevrolet factory. However, it was reluctantly sold during a challenging period, leading to vivid dreams of the car and restless nights. Fast forward to the 40th anniversary of its acquisition, and the Chevelle is now safely housed in his son Kristopher’s garage, each original part carefully preserved, right down to the front fender emblem. "Growing up, I heard countless stories about this car. It was always this mythical vehicle that Dad had to let go of. So, when it came back into our lives, it felt like a reunion with a long-lost family member,” his son, Kristopher relayed. The meticulous preservation of the Chevelle's original features is a testament to Lynn’s attention to detail. From the original paint, glass, chrome, 327 engine and transmission to the unused spare tire, every aspect reflects the car's factory condition. The glove box holds treasures like the "protect-o-plate" and a laminated copy of the window sticker, revealing the car's purchase price of $2,862.95. For Lynn, the symmetry of the key purchase date (6-5-65) and the delivery date 58 years ago held a special place in his heart. On the day he first laid eyes on the Chevelle at Dirk’s Motor in Akron, IA, he arrived at the dealership even before it opened, the hubcaps on the Chevelle still needed to be installed, but the key was already in the ignition. He turned it over and the rest was a moment etched in time for him.

However, life took a turn, and the Chevelle had to be sold during Lynn’s divorce in 1980. The car changed hands multiple times, traveling across the nation, but it was never forgotten. Lynn went on record saying for many years, he would dream about buying the car back, wake up and realize it was just that, a dream. "Dad's dream became a reality after placing an ad in Hemmings Motor News. The moment he saw it, there was no turning back. It was like a piece of our family history returning to us,” Kristopher said. After an emotional journey of tracking down the car, Lynn reacquired it in November 2002, paying approximately five times the original price. The Chevelle returned with minimal additional miles, having been sparingly driven by the previous owner in Palm Harbor, FL. According to Kristopher, "The previous owner understood the value of preserving this piece of automotive history, just like Dad did."

Lynn remained steadfast in his commitment to maintaining the car's originality. The Chevelle's odometer reads less than 30,000 miles. The engine has never been apart and it has the original alternator from 1965. He never even opened the front vent windows, the back windows were never rolled down and most likely, nobody ever sat in the back seat.

In 2010, Lynn suffered a stroke, spiraling his, as well as his son Kristopher’s, life into a new normal. While Lynn persevered to rehabilitate his life, Kristopher made sure that it was in the comfort of his own home by helping take care of his dad for over 10 years. Sadly, in 2021, Lynn passed away at the age of 77, but his love for classic cars carries on with his son Kristopher.

"Some may call it a shame, but for Dad, it was about preserving a piece of the past. It’s a rare car because everyone wanted the hardtops, the SuperSports. Opening and shutting the door feels like stepping back into a showroom from 1965," Kristopher added.

“Growing up, I was always around cars and would attend several car shows with him. It wasn’t long before I too became captivated by this world,” Kristopher revealed. Today, just as his father strove to preserve a timeless classic, Kristopher will occasionally drive the Chevelle short distances and take it to car shows, keeping his father’s memory and love of cars alive by telling the story of a man reuniting with his first car. Lynn Martin’s story is a testament to the enduring connection between a car and its owner, bridging generations and creating a legacy that his son Kristopher is proud to be a part of.

BRAND NAME Loyalty

I am going to make a statement about a specific time frame and want to see if you can relate. If you grew up during the 1950s and ‘60s, did you ever notice that most families were loyal to certain types or brands of cars and trucks? Or even if you grew up on a farm and liked certain tractors or cars because of influential fun stories about speed and real horsepower as told by our elders when we were together? I believe it was portrayed that way because we as humans are competitive by nature and always want to be on the so-called “winning team” while being able to prove what we believe. If challenged, we usually backed up our talk, leading to bragging rights if we were right, which made you feel good. When I was growing up on the farm, everyone in the immediate Schmeichel family had Hudsons and Allis-Chalmers tractors. These were simple understood vehicles, yet there was always an unsaid feeling of trying to out-perform a neighbor with more expensive 18 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

vehicles or tractors. If you were called to help a neighbor get his Farmall or John Deere tractor unstuck in a field he was plowing and you helped him out using an Allis-Chalmers, the razing continued, along with asking how his tractor was working later. . It always seemed to be in good humor as neighbors helped each other without a thought during that time. I don’t know if it felt that way with everyone living on a farm then, but I do know that the Wuerstz family was and continues to be focused on Dodge vehicles. Don’t get me wrong, because it is not a bad thing; it is just what they grew up with. Rick’s older brother, Ron drove a ‘64 Dodge Dart in high school and eventually parked it in the tree grove when he got married. With Ron away, Rick toyed around with the parked Dart, got it going again and drove it for a couple more years. During that time, their dad wanted to have the Dart back as a work car for himself and told Rick they’d have to find another Dart for him to continue to drive to high school.

The Wuerstzes located another newer 1966 GT Dodge Dart in Delmont, SD that Rick bought for a not-too-unreasonable price. After having it for a while with its slant six-cylinder engine, Rick’s father thought the car needed more power. So, they rebuilt and installed a 340” Dodge engine in the car to make it go faster as a daily driver, which eventually led to him racing it at Thunder Valley in Marion, SD. Seeing this really unified everyone in the family into buying Dodges of one form or another for their everyday use. Rick went to work right out of high school and eventually sold the car after about a year for something more practical with the mechanical work he was doing. He bought a pickup and regretted doing that for quite a few years. Then 15 years ago after trying to relocate his old Dart and finding out it had burned to the ground as a drag car, he started looking elsewhere around the country and finally located another ‘66 GT Dart with a 273” V8 in Kansas City. He

purchased it, bought it home and drove it for a few years. After realizing it needed a little more work than he had time for at the moment, he parked it to work on later. Then about five years ago, Rick’s older brother Ron, was looking for another ‘64 Dart for himself and found one in Tracy, MN. At about the same time, Bruce Duerksen, a mutual friend of both brothers, bought himself a ‘65 Plymouth Barracuda. Because of that, Rick decided he had to either do something with his parked Dart or find one that was completely finished if he was going to cruise with his brother and buddy. Then a few years ago, he found one online in Denver that pretty much fit the bill of what he was looking for. So, Rick and Ron flew out to Denver, bought it and drove it home. The exterior and interior of the vehicle are really nice as the photo shows, but Rick did some work to make it more to his liking. It was too low for Rick, so he took out the lowering blocks, re-arched the rear springs and installed new torsion bars and heavier sway bars on both ends so it handles along with larger wheels and tires. All the work aided in getting it up off the

ground. Rick then rebuilt the slant six-cylinder boring .040 over, installed a new hotter cam, a split exhaust manifold and a Carter 2-barrel carb. Rick figures because of what he did to rebuild the engine, it doesn’t have to work nearly as hard as it did earlier and now it gets 22 MPG. The other thing that makes this car a joy to drive is when he turns on the air conditioning while cruising down the highway on HOT SUMMER NIGHTS, as we had this past summer! As nice as this car is, I am curious to see what Rick does with the other car he parked 15 years ago. Now if he can just shoehorn a Hemi into this lightweight car, aim it one way and pull the trigger…. He might have to learn how to drive all over again! Fun and scary all at the same time!

Tell us a little about the car/why you chose this car. What’s your car’s story? My husband Ernie and I purchased the Mustang in 2011 from Sioux Falls Ford, and it had one previous owner. We chose the car because we wanted a Mustang, thought it was gorgeous and it was in our price range. We didn’t care then about V6 versus V8 and still don’t.

What’s your favorite part about the car? Is there anything you would change? We’ve made a few minor modifications to the car. Early on, we installed a K&N cold air intake, then a strut tower brace, 18-inch wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 – 235/50ZR18L tires. We added a chrome frame around the taillights along with a sequential taillight kit. But my favorite thing about the car is how it handles. I spent a day with the great guys at the Sports Car Club of Siouxland at the fairgrounds in Sioux Falls learning autocross, and I’ve taken the driving school at the Sturgis Mustang Rally a couple of times. The car never gets squirrely because it doesn’t have a high-performance/horsepower engine. Out in the Hills with all the curves, it’s rock solid. It takes the curves on the two-lane roads at 60 mph with no problems. I always have to chuckle at the guys with the high-performance engines and tons of horsepower doing 35-40 mph on the curves in the Hills. I’m like, “C’mon, get out of my way so I can enjoy this!” The one thing I’d change on the car is the paint job. Last May, I was on my way home from Luverne, MN when the derecho hit. When you get up close, you can see the damage to the paint, especially on the front of the hood. Plus, after 16 years, there are some dings and scratches that mar the paint. I’ve always wanted to replace the red stripe with one that says “Wild Pony” along with the Mustang logo.

24 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

Y O U R

What plans do you have for this car? My plan for the Mustang is to keep it maintained and repaired and have fun driving the hell out of it. I don’t have the patience or interest in sitting at a car show and preening. I want to be out on the road. We’ve taken the car to the Grand Canyon, Four Corners, the Tetons, Yellowstone, the Bighorn Mountains, Bryce Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Great Sand Dune National Park, UFO Watchtower, Devils Tower and all over South Dakota, Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa. One of my favorite annual trips is to Iowa State University in Ames. It’s my alma mater and I love wandering around campus. Plus, we have favorite coffee and chocolate shops. Last summer, we checked out the Amana Colonies, as well as Iowa City since Ernie is a Hawkeye fan. Locally, one of our favorite things in the summer is cruising Phillips Avenue in Sioux Falls on our way to our favorite B&G Milky Way at 69th & Louise. Vermillion and Yankton are a couple of our favorite day trip destinations, along with Okoboji, which includes the Taco House, of course. We have a couple of coffee shops in Mitchell that we enjoy occasionally also.

Does your car have a name? Blackie the Mustang is well-known among our family, friends and Facebook followers.

What’s an interesting fact or something people may not know about this ride? Blackie has 295,000+ miles on the original motor and doesn’t use any oil. I have a file that is four inches thick (I measured to be sure) of repairs and maintenance. When something wears out or breaks, we replace or fix it. I change the oil religiously every 3,000 miles. Gotta give a shout-out to Dan Aukes and Eric Larson at Manley Tire & Oil. Dan takes care of the alignment and suspension, and Eric works on whatever else we need. They are excellent mechanics and keep Blackie safely on the road. Every fall, Dakota Rustproofing applies wool wax to the undercarriage. I put four studded snow tires on from November to April and occasionally drive the car during the winter.

Additional Comments? Our travels in the Mustang always included Lucy the naughty rat terrier. She loved to “go in the Mustang” and would hang out between us with her front paws on the console. She’s been to 17 different states with us. Sadly, Lucy passed away this year. Now we bring our next generation of dogs, Lyle, a purebred Rat Terrier, and Bella, a Rat Terrier, Italian Greyhound mix. I write thrillers (check out The Rowan Milani Chronicles at maryyungeberg.com) and when I’m stumped trying to write a scene, taking Blackie out and tearing up the pavement on the backroads with the top down and music blaring usually clears my mind and helps the writing process. I’ve always told my husband Ernie that buying the Mustang was the best thing he’s ever done for me. When I open the garage door and see that Mustang logo on the trunk, it lifts my spirits and makes me happy. Seriously…what more could I want from a car?

THE EXTRA MILE

TODAY’S EXTRA MILE

These days, the custom engine building business can be quite challenging. Before, we could just order the parts we needed and they would be shipped to us. Now there are many obstacles in the way of that process. There are supply chain, manufacturing, shipping and quality problems - just some of the hurdles we must conquer to build the best engine we can and what our customers deserve. When we design an engine, we not only design the best engine for the customer’s use, but we also need to navigate that by using the parts that are most likely available and have the least lead time in manufacturing. Many suppliers have gone away from stocking parts and just making them as they need, while some are waiting for supplies to just make the correct part. This adds significantly to the time and effort needed to build an engine. We have formed a great network of different parts suppliers we use to help us through this struggle. Not only do we find the part but we also use the best possible quality for the price to stay within the estimated budget. This takes many staff hours but it is what we have to do in today’s engine-building arena.

There are many machine operations that cannot be finished without the part in hand. We have found that when the part finally arrives, it might not be worthy, have a critical blemish or have the wrong dimensions. We have determined that since we cannot put the metal back, once it’s been removed, we need to wait until we have the piece in hand and it has completely passed our quality control measures. Then we can proceed with the build.

Another rising factor is the lack of quality in some parts. Since the pandemic, many manufacturers have eliminated quality control at the factories to cut costs in an effort to stay in business. This leads to problems on the end user side and can cause premature failures if the problem is overlooked. In our increased quality control measures, we not only measure all aspects of the parts and hand-fit everything but we also create procedures to test the health of the product. These are just a few of the aspects and delays we have been dealing with when building custom engines today. The days of getting a quick engine overhaul or instant availability of quality parts are long gone. But rest assured, we at Sehr Performance are at the front lines giving it our all. We have and always will go the “Extra Mile” for our customers. From giving our customers the special attention you deserve, to answering any questions that may arise, we are here for you.

TALKIN’ TIRES with Graham Tire

The holidays are full of traditions, from trimming the tree to Christmas baking to exchanging gifts in matching pajamas. Another way to spread holiday cheer is by singing Christmas carols, one of the most popular being The Twelve Days of Christmas. Just like the classic holiday song, we present a list of 12 essential car care tips, each designed to prepare your vehicle for the challenges this time of year brings. Car trouble can be one less thing to stress about, which will be music to your ears!

1

On the first day… start by cleaning, flushing and adding new antifreeze to your cooling system.

2

On the second day… inspect your radiator and heater, as well as your windshield defroster.

On the third day… remember to maintain at least half a tank of gas to prevent moisture in gas lines, which can lead to freezing.

4

3

On the fourth day… inspect your exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous when driving in winter with closed windows.

On the fifth day… check your brakes before facing winter conditions to ensure you are able to stop properly and safely.

6

9

On the tenth day… check your tire tread depth weekly before driving in snowy and icy conditions as colder weather. Remember that colder weather can also lower tire pressure, so be sure to check that as well.

On the eleventh day… consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid for optimal windshield performance.

12

7

On the eighth day…check that all interior and exterior lights are functioning properly, and consider a headlight restoration service for better visibility for both you and other drivers.

On the ninth day… schedule a tune-up to address any existing issues as these can magnify with cold weather.

10

Happy Holidays!

On the sixth day… cold weather can be tough on batteries, so ensure yours is checked for optimal performance.

On the seventh day… prepare a winter car care kit with essentials like an ice scraper, snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, bottled water and dry snacks.

8

5

11

On the twelfth day… remember to enjoy this time of year and have a safe and happy holiday season from Graham Tire!

with The Motor Medics ® Shannon Nordstrom, Russ “The Super Tech” Evans, and Chris Carter

Dear Motor Medics, We have a new driver in the family, our teenage daughter. She will start driving on her own in a few weeks, and we have spent many hours with her teaching the skills of driving. We feel that she is very responsible for her age and will be a responsible driver but we would like your advice on how we can teach her to deal with a few common emergencies that a teenager might face when starting out on the road alone for the first time. Shelby Carroll, Iowa

Dear Shelby, There are many things about common vehicle emergencies that a new driver and even a well-seasoned one can benefit from knowing. Some problems can be prevented with focused driving. A driver who is aware of their surroundings can avoid many common problems. First off, many teens I talk to don’t know what to do about a flat tire. This is one of the easiest things to take care of but without proper knowledge can be very intimidating and even dangerous. Go over the procedures for installing a spare and don’t forget safety first like making sure the car is in a safe location before attempting a change. Six inches from the edge of a busy highway is not safe. In general, think of all the issues you have dealt with in your daily driving and teach them before it happens. Dead battery, out of gas, locked out of car, etc.

Dear Motor Medics, I recently had to have a suspension part replaced on my vehicle and I went the cheap route and found one on the internet at half of the price that my local store was offering at a cost I could not pass it up. Being so cheap and with the free shipping, I figured it made sense. The warranty was six months, but I figured they would not sell them if they all went bad and at that price, I could buy another one if it failed. I installed it myself and 1,000 miles later was left stranded missing a wheel. The car was towed and they found the part I had was very cheaply produced. I tried to call the company, but they have no phone and do not respond to my emails. Is there any way to know how good a part is when purchasing one from a source other than the vehicle manufacturer? Bart Wray, Colorado

Dear Bart, There are some great deals out there but also some very poor-quality parts that can fail and compromise your safety. How can you be sure you are getting good, quality parts? Buy locally. You will have a real building you can walk into and real people who will help you if you have a failure. The store will also have the backing of reputable companies that supply their parts and you will be supporting your local economy.

Take care, The Motor Medics

Happy Holidays from all of us at Straightlines!

2023 has been a big year at Straight Lines! Our founder, Marty Anfinson, and his wife Jody retired and sold the business to long-term employee Zach Smith and his wife Liz. We also added additional positions, including our own much needed upholstery shop, to better serve the needs of our customers. Through the changes and additions of this year, our skilled team continues to turn out the high-quality product for which we are known. What restoration goals do you have for your favorite car or truck? Whether you are considering factory stock, custom, “resto-mod” or total performance, we can handle it. Perhaps some specific performance, safety, handling, or comfort upgrades are what you desire. Our technicians do that as well. We are dealers for Dakota Digital, QA1 Suspension, Holley Sniper Fuel Injection, GM, Edelbrock, and Ford Performance crate engines, Wilwood Brakes, Art Morrison and Roadster Shop Chassis, and many more. If there is a performance upgrade you are considering, we can do it! We would enjoy the opportunity to discuss your automotive ideas with you. Stop in or give Zach a call at 605-214-1193.
