In the early 1930s, amid the somber backdrop of the Great Depression, when economic clouds hung heavy over the American dream, a shining beacon of resilience emerged on the streets. It was the 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe, a car that defied the hardships of its era and symbolized the spirit of those who refused to let adversity extinguish their automotive aspirations.
This car's history is not just about metal, wheels and horsepower; it's about the indomitable spirit of an era and the resilience of those who cruised through it, as well as those who continue to keep its legacy alive.
As the world grappled with financial uncertainty, this stylish and affordable Chevrolet became an unexpected symbol of hope for countless families. An ingenious third door on the driver's side, designed to make rear-seat access easier – was an innovation that opened doors, both literally and figuratively, in a time when so many seemed to be closing.
The 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe was a symbol of innovation and affordability. With its compact and stylish design, it featured a sloping roofline and sleek, streamlined bodywork that still turns heads today. The car often sported classic art deco styling, with prominent fenders, elegant chrome accents and a distinctive radiator grille.
A Timeless Classic
Under the hood, the 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe typically housed a 194 cubic-inch
inline-six-cylinder engine, generating a modest but respectable 50 to 55 horsepower. Its manual transmission, often a 3-speed or 4-speed, allowed for smooth gear shifting. The vehicle featured a conventional leaf spring suspension system, providing a comfortable ride over the often rough and unpaved roads of the era. Mechanical drum brakes provided stopping power, although they were not as efficient as modern braking systems. With a top speed typically in the range of 60 to 65 miles per hour, the 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe provided practical and reliable transportation for its time.
A JOURNEY TO RESTORATION
Ken and Sharla Mees of Huron, SD are the proud owners of one such 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe. Their journey with this vintage beauty began in 1998 when Ken acquired the car from an 83-year-old gentleman in Irene, SD. The previous owner's connection with the vehicle dates back to his childhood when a midwife from Wakonda, SD, arrived at his family's farm in the very car he would later come to own. At that moment, he expressed his desire to one day purchase the vehicle, a dream he fulfilled. This Chevrolet had always resided in South Dakota, passing through the hands of only a few owners before Ken and Sharla brought it to Huron. Upon purchasing it, the car was a completely original running and driving vehicle that had undergone restoration in 1965. Furthermore, the Coupe retains all of its original sheet metal, wood structures, roof insert, seat frame and running boards from the factory in 1930. In 2011, Ken embarked on a complete frame-off restoration of the Coupe. Determined to preserve the car's integrity while enhancing its performance, he took meticulous steps to transform it into a stunning and functional masterpiece. The restoration process included modifications to the original frame and suspension, lowering the ride height and improving handling. Ken used an innovative mix of components, including a 1966 Chevrolet 327 engine, a GM Turbo 350 transmission and Speedway Motors full-length headers. The result was a blend of old-world charm and modern performance.
"When people see the car, they are amazed that it’s a Chevy and not a Ford, and that it is all a 100% steel car with no fiberglass parts on it. It is a good feeling when you are the one who built the car and driving down the street, getting all kinds of smiles, waves and thumbs up." Ken's commitment to preserving the car's authenticity extended to the body, where painstaking efforts were made to achieve a high-gloss finish while keeping true to the original colors. Dale Lucklum of Lucky’s Auto Detailing in Huron, SD, and Neil Senska of S & S Auto Salvage in Hayfield, MN, played crucial roles in restoring the car's exterior. The interior of the car received a similar level of attention. Ken invested in sound-deadening materials, new carpeting and reupholstery work. Harvey Tschetter Upholstery in Huron contributed to the project, reupholstering kick panels, door panels and the original seat frame. Upon further investigation of his remodeled classic, Ken discovered the words “Patented in Canada in 1929,” underneath the running boards, adding a layer of historical curiosity to an already impressive piece of the past. Additionally, when the left front fender was media blasted during the restoration, they uncovered previous metal repairs done with lead, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of an earlier era. "It’s amazing how you can get different years of parts to work on your project with a little foresight of what you want it to be and look like," said Ken. "When people see the car, they are amazed that it’s a Chevy and not a Ford, and that it is all a 100% steel car with no fiberglass parts on it. It is a good feeling when you are the one who built the car and driving down the street, getting all kinds of smiles, waves and thumbs up."
For Ken and Sharla, their plan for the car is simple: to drive and enjoy it as much as they can, take it to local car shows and ensure that it remains in the family. Their journey with the Coupe is a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage cars and their place in preserving our automotive heritage. These classic automobiles celebrate the resilience of those who lived through challenging times and allow future generations to experience a bygone era. Vintage cars like the 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe embody not just the dreams of their era but also the enduring passion of collectors like Ken and Sharla. Their dedication ensures that these rolling pieces of history continue to inspire and captivate, reminding us of the importance of preserving our automotive heritage.
In a world that's constantly evolving, vintage cars serve as a timeless link to the past, connecting us to an era when resilience and innovation were the driving forces that kept us moving forward. For Ken and Sharla, their 1930 Chevrolet 3-Door Coupe is a rolling testament to the enduring appeal of the automotive legacy that continues to inspire and bring joy to all.

When I think about the year 1952, not too many things come to mind at first. I was only three years old, living in a three-room farm/schoolhouse with our family. Our house never had running water or indoor plumbing, but we did have an oil-burning stove with a fan in the living room, as well as a cobb-burning stove in the kitchen to heat the house. I remember getting an orange and blue Tonka semi-truck and trailer with “Our Own Hardware” written on the sides for Christmas that my mother never let me take outside; I still have it today. We didn’t get a TV till 1954, which picked up only two stations, one with Howdy Doody for me on Saturday mornings. Other than work or everyday chores, along with having the run of the quarter section of land and the trees to create my own fun, you might say I lived a pretty sheltered life while living at the farm. Looking back, there were many other significant events that occurred during that year. There was the polio epidemic and the beginning of the Korean War. Eisenhower was elected president, the Reserve Act of 1952 was passed by Congress and a woman named Sarah Keys refused to give up her seat on the bus, prompting the beginning of the equal rights movement. The year 1952 also held some significance for one car owner looking to take a spin in the past. His name is Jim and he has a fondness for vintage automobiles.
It surprises me sometimes that more often than not, some vintage car owners aren’t that familiar with auto mechanics. Yet they love the challenge and the idea of having an old car or truck to, as they put it, tinker with, drive and be around others with the same interests. The underlying irony is that these same individuals do actually learn about the mechanics by simply observing what their car guru friends do.

The underlying irony is that these same individuals do actually learn about the mechanics by simply observing what their car guru friends do. Jim Carlson kind of fits into the category of "non-mechanical," as he admitted to me. He
owned and drove a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair for 15 years, but then sold it for some reason. After four years without a car to play with, he decided it would be fun to have another one. So, he began his pursuit searching online, not really knowing what he would be interested in. One day, he came across an ad for an original 1952 Ford for sale in Lake City, Minnesota. After going to see the car, he was surprised to see it on the showroom floor at the Lake City Ford dealership. After taking a look, Jim discovered that the car only had 55,000 miles on the odometer. He said he really wasn’t looking for this type of car, mainly because it was a 4-door with a 6-cylinder engine, but it all looked so good, even the interior looked as if no one

Tell us a little about the car/why you chose this car. What’s your car’s story? I originally purchased my first Miata somewhat as a joke. I wanted an Integra Type R and needed to build some credit out of college, and I wanted a fun car to learn stick in. A ‘97 Miata that was later wrecked sparked an appreciation for the way Miatas handled. After posting the sad news to a local Facebook group, a local guy who had eight of the cars and frequently parted them out got in contact with me to purchase the car for parts. He pointed me in the direction of a clean body red (at the time turbo) ‘92, which I ultimately purchased. We ended up sparking a great friendship, and the K-Swap was done mostly in his garage over the course of two years. I remain friends with him and his family to this day, with his two prized cars on the autocross chopping block after some modifications I’ve been working on this past winter!
Y O U R
What plans do you have for this car? This year, the car is getting a full aero package, including an APR GTC-200 wing, hood vents and a Nine Lives Aero splitter. The car will, unfortunately, also be cut up as we’re installing fender flares to fit the 15x10” wheels. I’d like to someday change the ECU over from KPro V4 to either an AEM or Haltech ECU so I can have a single family of electronics for the ECU, PDM and digital dash. Someday, I’d love to build the motor for naturally aspirated horsepower. I have a good friend who builds K-Series motors, and I’d love to own a 300whp naturally aspirated 4-cylinder Miata.
What’s an interesting fact or something people may not know about this ride? Many hands made this car possible. While I have continued to push the build over the years that I’ve owned it, many people have offered garage space, hands, tools and time when I needed them. Big shoutout to the Gronseth Garage in Sioux Falls for their continued support over the years!
Does your car have a name? The car is fondly referred to as “Baby K.”
Additional Comments? If you’re on the fence about a K-Swap, just go for it!

What’s your favorite part about your car? Is there anything you would change? Nothing about the car remains untouched at this point, except for the transmission and differential. I have laid every wire and turned every bolt at least once. While I have a large series of visual changes coming up this year, my favorite component of the car continues to be the Honda engine. The 2.4L K24A2 motor pumping out 230whp combined with a lightweight chassis makes for an incredibly engaging driving experience. It’s a very simple setup that won’t stress the stock drivetrain until, of course, we turn our attention to building the motor!

TALKIN’ TIRES with Graham Tire
PREPPING YOUR RIDE for HOLIDAY TRAVEL The “Ber” months (September-December) arrived long ago, which means “Burrr” as far as weather goes in the Midwest. This also marks the approaching holiday season indicating winter travel. One of the busiest holidays for road trips over 50 miles is Thanksgiving, with Christmas coming in second. Whether you’re heading home for turkey dinner, Friendsgiving potluck, delivering gifts or taking the sleigh for a ride to gaze at Christmas lights, it’s important to check if your ride is up for the trek, especially given the colder weather. Be sure to check your list twice for these maintenance items before hitting the road this holiday season.
Inspect Your Tires
If you haven’t already, ensure your tires are winter-ready. Check for proper tread depth and air pressure before any trip. For every 10-degree drop in temperature, your tires lose one PSI of air. You will also need to check your tire tread – the penny test works well! If you cannot see the top of Lincoln’s head, be sure to head to your local Graham Tire to get them replaced. If your tires pass the test, check if they need to be rotated as well.
Schedule an Oil Change
Make sure that you change your oil and filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Fresh oil before your trip improves gas mileage, which is something you will be thankful for later at the pump. You will also want to make sure you keep enough oil in your vehicle just in case.
Test Your Battery
Most car batteries last three to five years so if yours is more than three years old, it would be a good idea to get it checked before any trip. A mechanic at any of Graham Tire’s locations can test this for you. You will also want to make sure the battery is clean and free of corrosion and the connections are tight.
Check Wiper Blades and Fluids
Double-check that your windshield wiper blades effectively clear your windshield and replace any blade that leaves streaks or missed spots. Top off your windshield washer reservoir as well, preferably with one that won’t freeze in colder weather.
Below are some things you should carry in your car during the winter season. » Sand or cat litter » Flashlight with extra batteries » Shovel » First aid kit » Multi-tool » Windshield cleaner » Cell phone charger and portable charger » Non-perishable snacks » Water » Extra warm clothing, hats, gloves, socks and footwear » Blankets » Ice scraper/snow brush » Jumper cables » Road flares or reflective triangles
Excellent customer service, nationwide warranties, and everyday low prices.
Antifreeze Levels
Top off antifreeze levels to keep your engine from freezing in the cold temps. Check all other fluids too to see if they need refilling.
See the Light(s)
Make sure to check out more than Christmas lights this season before heading out. This time of year, it gets dark early and visibility can be an issue at times. Check your headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers and replace any burnt-out bulbs.
Warming Up
It goes without saying that you will want to ensure your heater, as well as radiator and heater hoses, are functioning properly before venturing out into “Winter Wonderland.” You also want to keep Jack Frost at bay by checking the defroster.

But she says she would not be where she was if it wasn’t for Lake Area Tech. “I had heard a lot of great things about Lake Area Tech and specifically the aviation maintenance program,” says Kendall. “Plus, I wanted a faster program where I could also get my associate’s degree. So, I checked it out and graduated in May.”
“Both of my parents are pilots. I have always loved traveling. One day I decided to go on a discovery flight, an intro flight, and I fell in love.” And she’s been in the clouds ever since. “There is just something so amazing about being up there. You can literally step away from what is happening on the ground, any problems you’re having and just take a moment. It is really peaceful to be above the clouds or watching the fields go by. You’re just above it all – literally and that can be a really incredible feeling.” She may be 20 years old, but she has hours and hours of flight time under her belt. “My favorite place that I’ve been able to fly to is Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They host the biggest airshow in the world. There are so many different airplanes and it’s the busiest airspace on that day. It’s really cool to see it all and talk to other pilots and really get to network.”
They’re training the next round of pilots through their 18-month Professional Fixed-Wing Pilot Program. A huge draw for Kendall. “You’re flying the very first day. Obviously, in 10 years you will be in a different airplane but that first day, you get to see what you are hoping to do with the rest of your life.” While the program was basically brand new when Kendall started, it has taken off since then. Something Kendall sees firsthand. After she got her own wings, she decided she wanted to help others take to the skies.
“I decided to become an adjunct professor for the program and it’s amazing to see how it’s grown since I started out. I think we had maybe 10 people in my graduating class. Now I have about 30 students in the first year and 10 to 15 in the second. There is still a pilot shortage going on and I think a lot of people are seeing that and want to go into aviation because of that.”
Students will get a variety of licenses throughout their 18 months including private pilot, instrument rating, commercial, commercial multi-engine and certified flight instructor options among others. “I got all of mine over a couple of years,” she says. “Some take less time, but others take a lot longer, like my CFI. That took about six months. I think the biggest thing to know is it takes time, and it takes motivation. It is a lot of hard work, and it should be. You’re in charge of flying a plane and sometimes you will have other people with you. We always tell people, if they aren’t ready, they shouldn’t fly that day.”
“While I was working toward my CFI Rating, I started, just practicing teaching and I realized I absolutely loved it. Seeing that moment when it clicks for someone is really, really cool. You know, not everyone learns the same. So, you can’t teach the same and when they get it, it’s amazing to see.” Her biggest piece of advice…
“Just try it out! I think a lot of people may not even think of aviation as an option. Lake Area Tech makes it possible for so many people who wouldn’t have the option. They’re also so supportive of all the students. So, I say, ‘What is the harm in trying it?’ Go on a discovery flight and see what you think!”

THE EXTRA MILE
YOUR Dyno-Tuned ENGINE BY: SCOTT SEHR Your Sehr Performance dyno-tuned engine has many hours of engineering, machining, assembly and fine-tuning to make it perform to the desired requirements. It is very critical that your hot rod engine is well cared for so it will continue to perform well. The factory's low horsepower engines will run hundreds of thousands of miles with minimal maintenance and care. The higher horsepower hot rod engines will require more attention and maintenance, and the higher the power level, the more care and attention are needed.
In the dyno cell, we at Sehr Performance have a controlled power supply to our ignition system, as well as the engine cooling tower and fuel system. These are a few things that differ once the engine is installed into the vehicle. If the ignition power, coolant system or fuel system is not adequate and stable for the engine requirements, the performance and life of the engine will be sacrificed. We have seen low ignition voltage making the engine harder to start and unable to burn the fuel efficiently, creating a false rich condition. The fuel system must be clean and free from debris or it will plug and alter the fuel delivery, causing engine performance loss and damage.
An often overlooked aspect is the cooling system. If you decide to install a serpentine belt system, in many cases, this requires a reverse drive water pump to correctly move the coolant through the engine. If a standard water pump is used with the serpentine system, the engine will overheat, causing engine damage. Higher horsepower engines quickly create more heat, so a larger radiator and more CFM of air must be driven through the radiator to correctly cool the engine. Your hot rod engine will let you know if something is not quite right. All you have to do is pay close attention, watch your gauges and listen for any unusual noises. It is crucial to
have all the proper gauges in your vehicle to monitor what the engine is doing and continuously make sure the support systems are operating correctly. Your performance engine will require oil change service more frequently, and the spark plugs and valve springs should be checked regularly as well. If there are any concerns or questions, bring them up to your engine builder and machinist so the issue can be addressed promptly. At Sehr Performance, we put many more hours of engineering, machining, assembly and tuning into every engine we service so our customers can get the "Extra Miles" out of their build.

Dear Motor Medics, I want to repair the rear defroster on my Chrysler Town & Country van. We haul a lot of stuff in the van for our small business and over the years, items have scratched the defroster grid on the glass, and I assume that’s why it doesn’t work. The button on the dash still lights up. What do I need to do to fix the grid? Some spots are scratched up to an inch or so.
Dear Motor Medics, I just purchased a 2008 Infiniti sedan and would like to have a second set of wheels and more aggressive tires for winter. The vehicle also has a tiny spare that is much smaller than the other tires. I want to know if I can get another set of wheels for the car and where I would do that. I also want to know if I must stick with the smaller spare or if I can swap it out with a full-size tire.
Mark Cushina, Oklahoma
Steve Nebraska City, Nebraska
Dear Steve, Infiniti is a nice car and most have some very expensive factory wheels. We have several customers in our shop who use a different set of wheels with special tires for the winter season. Most of them choose to go with a set of used replacement wheels that match what they already have but in some cases such as the more expensive wheels found on higher-end cars like the Infiniti, they purchase a new set of custom wheels for the drier months and use the factory wheels for the rest of the year. Your local tire shop should be able to help you with options. A full-size spare may be an option too, but remember the storage space for the spare is often only large enough to store the compact spare, so you may have to keep it in the trunk sliding around and taking up valuable room.
Dear Mark, If you have any spots in the defroster grid that are cut, you will have an open circuit and that will stop the operation of the defroster. The grid needs to be protected from objects that may scratch it and from things like ordinary tape. We have seen many temporary license plates taped to the window and when removed, the grid gets torn. One way to protect a working grid is with window tint if it is legal in your area. Repairing a broken grid can be tricky. There is a liquid product available at some parts stores that will bridge the gap of a cut wire, but it is not meant for long gaps such as you described. If you have several cuts with some being extensive, you may opt to replace the glass with a good used part. A used replacement rear glass is a much cheaper alternative to get your defroster back up and running.
