A fully restored 1947 Lincoln Continental is a sight to see for classic car fans. The car is stored at Cliff Avenue Upholstery & Restoration, the business that returned the luxury car to its former glory. Lincoln Continentals were a line of full-sized and mid-sized cars introduced in 1939 that remained in production until 2020. The 1947 Lincoln Continental is considered part of the first generation of that line. Painted its original shade of Opal Blue Green, the vehicle in Cliff Avenue’s showroom was purchased by Clyde Dunn, who owned a car dealership in eastern South Dakota in the 1960s and 1970s. After attempting to restore the Lincoln Continental himself, Dunn hired Cliff Avenue to complete the project. “He was trying to restore it himself for the longest time. He came into the upholstery shop and talked with Ennis Lund, the owner,” said foreman Aaron Mosterd. “When we got it, it was completely torn apart. It was in boxes and pieces. … He had everything. It was a matter of piecing it back together.”

“WHEN WE DO A FULL FRAME-UP RESTORATION, IT’S PRETTY THOROUGH. THERE’S PRETTY MUCH NOTHING THAT DOES NOT GET TOUCHED.” “He’d always been interested in cars like that,” said Joyce Dunn, Clyde’s wife. “He liked old cars but he was particularly taken by the Lincoln Continental. It’s a big car and it has a lot of chrome bumpers and things like that.” He’d initially seen the car advertised for sale in a magazine. After he bought it, Clyde got to drive it a few times before it was restored, according to Joyce. “While it was being restored, we’d go out and look at it every once in a while,” Joyce said. “It was exciting for him because it was something he wanted to do.” The car’s restoration was completed in 2009, and Clyde was delighted. He has since passed away, leaving Joyce the 1947 Lincoln Continental. It’s stored and on display at Cliff Avenue’s Showroom in Tea. Joyce is happy the car is where other car aficionados like her husband can enjoy it. “People really like the car,” Aaron said. “You don’t see many of them running around.”

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE CAR/WHY YOU CHOSE THIS CAR. WHAT’S YOUR CAR’S STORY? Beginning its life in June of 2008 as a dealer demo in Iowa, this car quickly found its first real family in Sioux Falls, SD on September 18, 2008, the day its loving owner, Mike Whitcomb, turned 60. The car became Mike’s daily driver, earning him the title of “The coolest teacher in school.” Mike loved to make his cars unmistakable, so color-matched wheels were ordered and installed and tint was applied. Sadly, in

February of 2010, Mike passed away, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, compassion and a love of hot rods. The car remained with the Whitcomb family for many years to come, enjoyed as a cool summertime cruiser. Then, the story turned to the next chapter; on September 18, 2021, Mike’s son Keaton drove the challenger to my going away party prior to my year-long deployment. It was that day, exactly 13 years to the day from when Mike bought it, that Keaton offered to sell it to me. Of course, I accepted

that offer. So, two weeks prior to a 14-month deployment, I bought my dream car from one of my best friends, and I already had a bunch of memories that included this very car. It simply did not feel real. Even to this day, some of it still doesn’t.

WHAT’S AN INTERESTING FACT OR SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS RIDE? I got to see this car from the very start. The first time I saw it, Mike still had the dealer plates on it; it’s really cool to have so many memories with the car even prior to my ownership.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR CAR? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD CHANGE? Hearing people, especially little kids, say “Whoa” when I drive by.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I would like to dedicate this photo and the story of the car to my dear friend Mike C. Whitcomb, as well as the entire Whitcomb family. I’m honored to be entrusted with caring for this beautiful machine.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THIS CAR? Enjoy it! My family loves going for rides in it. It’s a blast to drive, and I love sharing the story of Mike and how the car came to be mine.

TALKIN’ TIRES with Graham Tire

back from the dead Courtesy of HubPages.com

If your car battery is completely dead, no need to fear; jump-starting it or charging the battery will bring it back to life. Here are some steps to follow: 1. Make sure you have the necessary equipment. You will need jumper cables, another car with a charged battery, a flashlight and, depending on where the battery is located, a screwdriver. 2. Position the two cars so that their batteries are as close together as possible, but do not let the cars touch. 3. Locate the batteries in both cars. The battery is usually located under the hood, but it may also be located in the trunk or under the seat. Also, ensure both batteries are of similar voltage to avoid electrical damage. 4. With both cars off, connect the jumper cables in the following order: • Connect one end of the red positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. • Connect the other end of the red positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the charged battery. • Connect one end of the black negative jumper cable to the negative terminal of the charged battery. • Connect the other end of the black negative jumper cable to a metal surface on the car with the dead battery, such as a bolt on the engine block or the frame of the car. 5. Start the car with the charged battery and let it run for a few minutes. If it does not start, the battery may be too damaged to hold a charge and will need to be replaced. 6. Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them. 7. Let the car with the revived battery run idle for 30 minutes or drive it around for a while to recharge the battery. 18 T H E M O T O R M A R K E T.C O M

If you are unable to jump-start the car or do not have access to another car, you may be able to charge the battery using a battery charger. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging the battery. It’s important to note that jump-starting a car can be dangerous if not done properly. If you are unsure of how to jump-start a car or are not comfortable doing it, it is best to call a tow truck or a roadside assistance service to help you. Why Do Car Batteries Die? There are several reasons why a car battery may die: • Age: All car batteries have a limited lifespan, and as they age, their ability to hold a charge decreases. Eventually, the battery will die and will need to be replaced. • Lack of use: If a car is not used frequently, the battery can lose its charge. • Extreme temperatures: Extreme hot or cold temperatures can affect the performance of a car battery. • Electrical problems: If the car’s electrical system is not functioning properly, it can drain the battery. • Corrosion: Over time, the terminals of the battery can become corroded, which can prevent the battery from charging. • Loose or damaged battery cables: If the battery cables are loose or damaged, they may not be able to transmit power effectively. It’s a good idea to regularly check your car’s battery and make sure it is in good condition to help prevent it from dying unexpectedly. You can also invest in a battery maintainer to help keep your battery charged when your car is not in use.

“It’s Alive! It’s Alive!” Here are some ways to extend the life of your car battery: • Keep the battery clean and free of corrosion. • Store your car in a garage to protect it from extreme temperatures. • Avoid taking short trips and let the battery fully charge. • Use a battery maintainer if you don’t use your car often. • Turn off the headlights when the car is not in use. • Regularly check the battery for wear and damage and replace it if necessary. • Have the car’s electrical system checked if the battery is dying frequently.

October is NATIONAL FALL CAR CARE MONTH Feature sponsored by…

Winter, whether we like it or not, is approaching soon which means driving hazards such as snow and icy roads. The fall season is the perfect time to get your vehicle ready for the upcoming cooler and inclement weather. With October being National Fall Car Care Month, here are a few things to keep in mind. TIRES AND RIMS If your tires are not properly inflated, have little tread or need to be rotated (every 5,000 to 7,500 miles), make sure to have a professional service or replace them. While you’re at it, you could even get custom tires, as well as rims, which can drastically change the look of your car or truck. With so many sizes and colors available, a professional can help you find the perfect set for your ride. OIL CHANGE Changing your oil and oil filter routinely as specified in your manual increases the longevity of your engine. Having clean oil is essential, ensuring the controls are properly lubricated and running smoothly. BRAKES Avoiding brake repair can be extremely dangerous, especially in slippery road conditions. Your brake rotors,

22 T H E M O T O R M A R K E T.C O M

linings and drums should be inspected along with every oil change. BATTERY It’s always important to make sure your battery is fully charged and replaced if need be. Dead batteries are common during this time of year and could leave you stranded. Visit your local repair shop to check your battery. FLUID FLUSH One of the most important types of car maintenance is fluid flushes. Ensuring your fluids are fresh and clean helps your car continue to function properly, which includes heating functions, and enhances the lifespan of your car. Manual transmissions recommend doing this every 30k-60k miles, and with automatics, it ’s every 60k-100k miles. CHANGING THE AIR FILTER From pollen to construction dust, your air filter plays an important role in keeping your ride running smoothly. It’s recommended to change your air filter at least once a year or every 12,000-15,000 miles, whichever comes first.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS When your wiper blades begin to look worn and not work as effectively, it’s critical to replace them. Not only does this help you see properly, but it can also help prevent damage caused by old wiper blades. The general rule of thumb is to replace every 12 months, sometimes sooner during colder months. Remember to stock up on windshield washer solvent as well. WASHING YOUR CAR Midwest winters mean salt on the roads in addition to dirt and debris. Getting your car washed at least every few weeks will help prevent rust during this time of year. If your car is not washed regularly, you are also more likely to have scratches and knicks on your car due to the build-up. For extra protection from the harsh winter roads, consider taking it a step further with a lifetime ceramic coating. This will not only make your paint last longer and protect your car from the elements, but your ride will also shine like new! AUDIO Enhance the sound of your car by replacing the factory speakers. Aftermarket speakers are designed for better sound reproduction. Adding an amplifier will boost this a step further. If you want to have the bass frequencies stand out, installing a subwoofer is the way to go.

Triple Crown BY: JUSTIN OLSEN

While many were busy with kids going back to school or the final camping weekend for the summer, on September 8-9, I had the opportunity to attend a new car show outside of Nashville, TN. The Triple Crown of Rodding is a world-renowned show that originated in Pigeon Forge, TN, and was then known as Shades of the Past. After 39 years, the show this year was brought to the Nashville Superspeedway, celebrating its 40th-year milestone. After the previous location’s lease expired, Bobby Alloway of Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop and Gary Case, founder of Stylin’ Concepts, as well as HotRod Hardware (now Summit Racing), bought the rights to the event and put their many years of experience in the hot rod show world to good use, and they did not disappoint. The organization and overall logistics of this show were top-notch, and the list of guest builders in attendance was like nothing I had seen before.

There is debate amongst many about who the best of the best is. The bottom line, they are all 26 T H E M O T O R M A R K E T.C O M

multiple award winners, they are all friends, they all have their own style and they are all down-toearth car guys. Thirteen of the biggest names in the industry were in attendance at the Triple Crown of Rodding show, such as Alloway, Rad Rides by Troy, Chip Foose, Ringbrothers, Dave Kindig, Jesse Greening, Roadster Shop and many others. At specified times during the show, all 13 of them were seated in a celebrity area of the NASCAR garages and available for autographs. There were over 160 vendors set up outside in the Tennessee heat and humidity. A massive midway area showcased large trailer displays from all the major names in the industry including Classic Performance Products (CPP), Lokar, Roadster Shop, LMCTruck, and Wegner Automotive, as well as builders from coast to coast with their work parked for everyone to enjoy. Perhaps the most momentous par t of the Triple Crown of Rodding show is who the winners will be. Originally, only three top awards

were given out, but with the rising popularity of trucks in the last decade, it has turned into six categories with the three additions applying to trucks within certain year categories. The winners of the original categories were: Andy Leach of CAL Automotive Creations with a 1960 Buick Invicta, Greening Auto Company with a ‘27 Ford and Kindig-It Design with comedian Kevin Hart’s Dodge Challenger. Each winner received a custom 1 of 1 Gibson guitar and a solid billet aluminum trophy, dripping with chrome from Advanced Plating. As if that wasn’t enough, there were also 30 Builder’s Choice awards handed out. If your vehicle was selected and instructed to be in the pit road area, you were winning something; you just had to wait until Saturday at 4:30 p.m. to find out. This show will only get bigger and better. It’s hot, it’s humid, but Tennessee is gorgeous, so keep this event on your radar in case you’re looking for something to do at the end of summer.

IMPORTANT PARTS

Custom bodywork and paint job, $25,000. Billet custom wheels and tires, $4500. Spending an extra $500 on extreme duty pistons that will not fail under load, priceless! Custom engine building in todays environment can become a more expensive task than expected in order to get the desired reliability and performance out of an engine package. There is so much information out there from Internet chat rooms, from friends, or from magazine articles on particular builds that brag about inexpensive engine projects that most people seem to trust as fact, but most usually have many costs and actual reliability left out. We all want to get the most out of our dollar, but cutting corners on engine parts and necessary machine work is not a wise choice. Building a cheap or inexpensive engine is a recipe for disappointment and will cost much more to repair or to start over later after it fails. It seems to be easier to spend tens of thousands of dollars on things we can see like the vehicle body and paint, wheels and tires, custom interior, turbo systems, superchargers,

valve covers, intakes, and headers. But the things that make the car move like the engine, transmission, suspension, and the rear end seems to quite often get the low budget treatment. This is what leads to a vehicle that will not perform to the potential that is expected and often leads to failure. It is harder to spend money on things we cannot see but it will always save time, disappoint, frustration, and money in the long run to take the advice of your engine builder machinist and do things correctly the first time. Some of the hard parts in the engine to look at to spend a little more funds is the pistons, ring package, connecting rods, crankshaft, engine bearings, valve train, engine fasteners, valves, and valve springs. You may not see these parts, but you will notice them when you use your engine. Reliable engine blocks and cylinder heads are also an important thing to consider for a reliable engine build. Even the best parts in the world will not survive unless all of the machine work and engine assembly is done absolutely correct and true. Some of the most important things of the engine is to

have correct straight and round cylinder bores, equal deck heights, parallel and flat deck surface, straight and round main and connecting rod bores, correct and true valve seats, a flat and true head gasket surface, correct valve guide clearance, and precise engine balancing. All of this will come together with correct engine assembly. If time and serious attention is taken on the engine assembly the build will be a success but if anything is skipped, overlooked or forgotten it will most certainly end in disaster. Here at Sehr Performance we pride ourselves in keeping up with current machining procedures, continuing advanced education in our industry, and keeping up with new engine hard part technology. HOW TO MANAGE CASH VS. BORROWING WHEN INTEREST RATES RISE

By: Jeff Christians

We all use credit in our daily lives, whether it’s to help optimize cash flow, create tax efficiencies, or make purchases. A rising interest rate environment could be a good time to take a closer look at liquidity strategies and other forms of borrowing. USING CASH VERSUS BORROWING It could make sense to pay cash instead of borrowing in some instances. Let’s say you have a fair amount of cash and are not planning to invest it in the market. That could be a good solution for buying a car or a house, paying for a child’s education, or expanding a business. Amid higher interest rates, paying cash could be a better option than securing a long-term loan to buy a costly item. “Increased rates may also impact purchasing power for bigger-ticket items (such as

TH HE EM MO OT TO OR RM MA AR RK KE E T.C T.C O OM M 32 T 32

homes, boats, and airplanes) traditionally financed over longer periods,” says Brian Singsank, senior lead wealth custom lending specialist, Wells Fargo Wealth & Investment Management. “It’s important to evaluate your balance sheet and wealth plan to make sure they are aligned to help meet upcoming liquidity needs.” Also, if you have an existing variable-rate loan, such as an adjustable-rate mortgage or line of credit, that rate could go up, resulting in higher interest costs. “If it’s still a long-term funding need, when interest rates are rising could be the time to evaluate,” Singsank says. Whatever you decide, timing can be critical. Your investment planners can help you decide on what is best for your current situation.

DISCUSS CREDIT AND LIQUIDITY NEEDS WITH YOUR ADVISORS “Be proactive when interest rates change,” says Singsank. “Consider reviewing your wealth plan and related credit and liquidity needs with your banker, advisor, your CPA, and even an estate planning specialist.”

4. Based on your balance sheet leverage, what is your exposure to rising interest rates?

Singsank recommends starting those conversations by sharing your answers to these basic questions:

6. As part of working toward your financial goals, do you anticipate upcoming borrowing or liquidity needs?

1. How much in assets would you be willing to liquidate and why? 2. Are you debt-averse? 3. Would you consider alternatives to liquidating your current cash reserves in order to meet your financial needs?

5. Are you comfortable with the amount you’re paying or may have to pay to service your variable interest payments in a rising rate environment?

“Once you’ve answered these questions,” says Singsank, “you should better understand whether you need to make changes to your wealth plan, including liquidity and other borrowing strategies, to help meet your financial goals.”

AERO WARS

During the mid-1970s, Jerry Miller bought himself a 1968 Ford Torino, inspired by his friend Mike Lamp’s 1969 Fairlane Cobra. Jerry liked the body style and wanted a fun, newer car to drive to work. Originally, the car Jerry bought had a 3-speed manual transmission and a 289 cubic-inch engine. After using it for about five or six years, the front suspension was getting loose, so rather than rebuilding it, Jerry sold it to a friend and moved on to another car. After another couple of years, however, Jerry realized he missed the car and bought it back. By this time, the engine was getting tired and didn’t start easily because of the lack of compression, but it still ran okay. Young with ideas in his head, Jerry installed a 4-speed transmission in the car and, with the help of three others, stripped the car down to the bare minimum to race in the late model class at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, SD. After a lot of continual work and a couple more years of racing, the car had more body damage than Jerry wanted to deal with, so the car was scrapped. 36 T H E M O T O R M A R K E T.C O M

Now, let's back up all the way to the beginning and take a look at why many, like Jerry, were also intrigued by this style of vehicle throughout history.

In 1948, NASCAR was created to pit factory production cars against one another in speed and endurance. People were very influenced by these races, which pushed new car sales based on the outcome of what make of vehicle won. Every year of the races, auto manufacturers became more heavily involved in making their factory production cars outperform the next. Drivers gained reputations for being good even with the cars' speeds increasing every year. In 1968, Richard Petty announced he was switching to Fords after Chrysler turned him down for a chance to drive one of their newer Dodge Daytonas or Plymouth Superbirds they were coming out with. At the beginning of this movement, there was much discussion of how extreme manufacturers were going to be allowed to modify their

vehicles, but that was short-lived when an agreement was made by all. Their cars had to be production-type vehicles with at least 500 of each body style to qualify for racing, hence the immersion of the Ford Torino Talladega, Dodge Daytona, Plymouth Superbird and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II in 1969. Changes for the Talladega and Cyclone Spoiler weren’t quite as radical as the Chrysler vehicles, with some of their mods being quite subtle, yet achieving the ability to go past the 200-mph mark. I have to believe that Ford and Mercury carrying their roof line back to the end of the trunk might have given them an edge, acting like an airplane wing creating lift and allowing the car to be lighter and faster. Holman & Moody, Ford’s racing partner in the South, built Petty’s first car. After that, Petty created his own division to build cars, which I’m sure included wind tunnel testing. In 1969, Petty won 10 races and finished second place in the final Daytona 500 race. Because of

Petty’s winning streak with Ford in 1969, he returned to Chrysler in 1970 and has remained there ever since. As time moved on, NASCAR eventually moved away from manufactured vehicle racing, evolving into teams building their own versions of race cars within certain parameters to keep it all even today. Even their engines are all the same with restrictor plates. These days, it is more about the drivers and strategies involving pit stops. Returning to Jerry, quite a few years go by and then 10 years ago, he decided he’d like to have another ‘68/’69 Torino. But this time, he would prefer a big block with a 4-speed as you’d find in a Cobra model. He came across one such car originating from Oklahoma at an outdoor car show that a mutual friend, Terry Fairy, owned, except it had an automatic trans rather than

a 4-speed. After approaching Terry about selling the car, a comment was made that he was leaving the car to his kids and it was not for sale. Fast forward to 2019, Jerry gets a call from Terry informing him that he had had a heart attack, the car hadn’t been driven in five years and his kids really had no interest in the car. Terry wondered if Jerry was still interested in buying it and before long, a deal was made. Jerry was able to bring his new ride home on his birthday, along with seven tubs of additional parts previous owners had accumulated over the years. Jerry is now and has been the caretaker of this appealing, rust-free car, just like the day he bought it. Even without a 4-speed, Jerry and his wife Robin love the car just as much as their totally restored 1970 Mustang Boss 302. For them, life doesn’t get much better other than experiencing it on four wheels around the country!

with The Motor Medics ® Shannon Nordstrom, Russ “The Super Tech” Evans, and Chris Carter

Dear Motor Medics, I’m having trouble with my car overheating. When driven until the engine is fully warmed up, the temperature gauge will move to the red line but will then drop back to almost the cold mark and continue this cycle as long as I drive. This has been going on for several months, and I also noticed that on one cool morning when I used my heater, the temperature of the air coming from the vent changed from hot to cold when the gauge started to cycle. The funny thing was that the temp went cold when the gauge was hot and then warmed up again when the gauge moved towards cold. What could be going on with my car?

Dear Motor Medics, I have faithfully serviced my Toyota since the day it was new in 2011. I have taken it in for every factory-recommended service listed under the severe service category in the owner’s manual. I have had very few failures in the first 150,000 miles. I say first because I plan to drive it another 150,000 before trading it off, and I may even keep it longer if she holds together. The manual stops at about 120,000 but I have seen the pattern and can just repeat I suppose. Being that it is aging, are there things not in the manual that I should consider to preserve the life of the truck? Ralph McAlester, Oklahoma

Beverly Lincoln, Nebraska

Dear Ralph, Good job on keeping your vehicle running! In addition to the manufacturer-recommended services, you can ask your shop what they recommend. Often, a fuel system cleaning can do wonders for an aging vehicle that’s starting to lose fuel mileage due to lost efficiency caused by a dirty fuel system. Also, at this age, brake fluid and power steering fluid will start to break down or become acidic, which can wear parts prematurely. Changing these fluids often will extend the life of the systems and save you money on repairs over the long term. A good relationship with an experienced shop is the best way to find out what areas of your vehicle can benefit from a little added attention to maintenance.

Dear Beverly, The description you provided is very good and unfortunately, the first thing that comes to mind is a head gasket failure. When a head gasket fails, it can allow the heated combustion gases from the cylinder to pass into the cooling passages. When this happens, the coolant can no longer cool the engine due to the disruption of the coolant flow, and the gauge moves towards hot. At the same time, the coolant flow to the heater is disrupted and the air from the vents will cool down. Checking for a head gasket failure is done by testing the air in the cooling system for combustion gases. If gas is present, it indicates a failure in the system. Take care, The Motor Medics
