A Rare Gem

Kira Gonzalez By: Lydia Gleiser Photography By: Shane Monahan “I grew up in a very close family,” Kira shares. ” Through my parents, grandparents, and my aunts. I learned about the importance of family and having strong family values.” Kira’s father was a civil engineer and his job required him to travel all over Mexico while designing and constructing new projects. Later he decided to start his own construction business. Her mother quit her job after getting married to take care of the family, but she assisted her dad doing secretarial work and putting together quotes and bids for clients for his construction business,” Kira smiles as she recalls so many fond memories. “I was blessed to be raised around my mom’s family, my grandparents, aunts, my nanny, and my cousins,” Kira shares. My aunts and my nanny were strong valued women who became like second moms to me,” Kira shares. “But I also have a big family in El Salvador, where my dad grew up.” “My paternal grandfather was a Master jeweler in Santa Ana, El Salvador. There is where the jewelry vein started. My dad learned the craft, but he moved to Mexico to study civil engineering. My dad was the one that taught me about jewelry. One of my favorite memories was my dad taking me to jewelry stores around Mexico City and looking at gemstones and jewelry pieces.” As Kira got older, she continued to cultivate her creative side through dance and painting, but she often found herself nose-deep in her father’s quantum physics books along with his mathematics literature. Upon graduating high school, Kira had plans to be a graphic designer, but her love of mathematics and eagerness to acquire more knowledge pushed her in the direction of chemistry. It was while attending the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico (UAEM), that Kira met her now husband, Juan. “At the time, my older sister was

also attending the same college and Juan was in her class,” Kira says. After talking with Juan in the library, the two developed a friendship that soon became a relationship. While attending college, Kira stayed busy studying and working alongside her sister. “We started our first business as a side hobby of selling handmade scarves and accessories to small shops around the area.” After graduating with her degree in chemical engineering, Kira started working full-time with her father and sister by consulting small business in the area. “Our company name was Corea Engineering Services,” Kira added.

One of my favorite memories was my dad taking me to jewlery stores around Mexico City and looking at gemstones and jewelry pieces.

One of Kira’s first projects that she helped construct and configure with her sister and father was working with a family business that was making popsicles. “At the time, they didn’t have any equipment or structures in place,” Kira shares. “They were making each popsicle by hand, and it was very tedious and time consuming.” Working as a team, Kira, her sister, and father, were able to put a plan in place involving crucial steps and equipment necessary to make this family popsicle business successful and operational. At the same time, Kira was approached by a private school to teach classes during the afternoon. Soon, Kira started teaching high school and college level calculus and various math and physics classes.

Wanting to further her education, Kira decided to get her master’s degree. Her research project studied the migration in saliva of plasticizers added to PVC. The PVC with plasticizers was used to make pacifiers and soft toys. “It was a really big research program,” Kira recalls. “I collaborated with the government and medical centers due to the project being government funded along with private contributions. I learned so much and it was a fascinating and educational study to be a part of.”

What is more interesting is that Kira was now pregnant with her son Sebastian during part of the study, and she allowed the research team to track her pregnancy and ultimately her baby throughout this study. “I was not only working on this research project, but also being a willing participant in it” Kira shares. After earning her master’s in environmental science, Kira started courses to obtain her PhD in Environmental Engineering. “My PhD studies were interrupted because we moved to the USA,” Kira explains.

Kira’s translator became the television, something that she says helped her learn English while getting her bearings in America.

Looking back now, Kira admits that she doesn’t know how she did it all, but credits her husband, Juan, for being her biggest supporter during long hours of taking classes, teaching classes, researching, completing course work, being a wife and mother. “If it wasn’t for Juan, I couldn’t have done everything that I was able to accomplish,” Kira says. Spring 2004, Juan had a job opportunity in America that brought Kira and their family to Sioux City, IA. “At that time, our son was two years old, we didn’t have any family in the United States

and didn’t know English” Kira recalls. “But Juan and I were a team and we jumped feet first at the opportunity to move somewhere new. In Sioux City, we received a second gift, our second baby, Emiliano.” Her translator became the television on closed caption Kira shares, something that she says helped her learn English while getting her bearings in America. But as quickly as they came to Sioux City, Juan’s company offered him another job opportunity, this time in China.

In December of 2005, Kira and Juan, along with their two sons, Sebastian (three years old), and Emiliano (five months old), moved to South China where Juan would oversee the operations of a new plant. “In China we lived in Shanghai,” Kira shares. “Our third boy, Braulio was born in Shanghai, a beautiful present from China,” Kira explains. “While my husband worked and our sons were in school, I began teaching physics to a group of Mexican students that were studying in China.” After living in Shanghai for two years, Juan was relocated back to the USA, where they settled in Sergeant Bluff and bought a house. With her impressive résumé, work experiences and knowledge, Kira started working as a chemist in the Technological Affairs Department at Gelita, located at Port Neal in Sergeant Bluff, IA. She was soon promoted to Scientist, and currently is a Senior Scientist of Process Development for Collagen Peptides where her team had developed processes for collagen peptides and gelatine production. Since moving back to the Siouxland area, Kira was also able to tap into her creative side by creating jewelry and her own online and pop-up shop called Ohana Pearls. “Ohana Pearls has been something that I have been working on since I lived in Mexico. I was able to officially start Ohana Pearls in 2016,” Kira shares. While in China, Kira was able to start working with local vendors while searching for the highest quality of pearls found worldwide. Going to pearl farms and markets to learn about the different types of pearls was another experience that Kira dove in to. “I wanted to make sure I learned as much as possible about pearls, how to purchase sustainable materials and creating one-of-a-kind jewelry before I offered these special pieces to others” Kira shares. “I absolutely love pearls and the science behind how pearls are created “Kira says. “Pearls are amazing and the process that an oyster or mussel

goes through to produce a pearl is just fascinating. Pearls are also beautiful, timeless and classic.” Ohana Pearls was appropriately named by Kira because Ohana is a Hawaiian term that means “family”, something that has always been a priority to Kira since she was a young girl. I am so blessed and grateful with my husband and my sons.” I am very proud of them, they are an example to me of hard work, perseverance, kindness, and they are my biggest motivation to be better every day.” Ohana pearl’s exquisite collection includes Japanese Akoya Pearls, Freshwater Pearls, Tahitian Pearls and South Sea Pearls that she has customized into earrings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants. Kira shares that making jewelry has become therapeutic for her. Among her favorite pieces that she has crafted was a pendant that was lovingly made “My mother has always been such a positive person and has supported me for her mother. no matter what I have done” Kira shares. “Her passing was hard because Kira says that her mother had beautiful green eyes, something that she incorporated into the design of her mother’s pendant. Kira had planned to go to Mexico for her mother’s 80th birthday and for her parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, but then the pandemic hit and sadly Kira’s mother passed away while Kira’s travel plans were put on hold.

she was such a strong influence on me and always encouraged me that I could do anything I put my heart and soul into.” Since starting Ohana Pearls Kira has had the pleasure of making jewelry for clients all over the United States and Mexico, something she is so appreciative for. “For me, I am always so thankful for the opportunities that my life has blessed me with and from a young age I was always taught to be

grateful for what you have.” Being filled with gratitude and staying humble is something that is important to Kira, traits that she has passed down to her own sons. “To me, life is a playground- have fun, take risks, be kind to others and always be thankful.”

More with Kira Kira is fluent in Spanish and English, but she also learned Mandarin. While living in China, her sons were able to speak Mandarin as well.

Kira enjoys working with others and has found that she loves the business side of owning Ohana Pearls as much as she does the creative side when designing different pieces for clients. Kira’s dedication to her jewelry has earned her certification from the NY Institute of Design. She has earned a Platinum Winner award through the Sioux City Community Votes two years in a row. Kira is currently getting the GIA Pearl Certification. At the beginning of 2024, she will present the final test to get the certification. In her spare time, Kira loves watching movies, eating ice cream and drinking coffee! Her favorite part of the day is enjoying dinner with her family. Kira loves Siouxland and has always felt like it is home. She has always felt that people in Siouxland are so caring, hardworking and supportive of each other. The sunrises and sunsets of the Midwest are also her favorite to view.

StoneyBrook Suites:

WhereFriendship

Blossoms The Story of Pauline and Joyce Within the StoneyBrook Suites Assisted Living community, the friendship of Pauline and Joyce stands out as a testament to the beauty of connection and friendship. Pauline, a resident of StoneyBrook for seven years, traces the her connection with Joyce to the dining room where they were seated together. Originally moving to StoneyBrook with her late husband, Rodney, Pauline found solace and joy in the friendship that blossomed with Joyce, a newcomer to StoneyBrook three years ago. Sharing meals together, Pauline and Joyce discovered they had more in common than their residence at StoneyBrook. Pauline and her husband raised a family of eight children in Jefferson. Joyce and her husband, Wayne, raised seven children while residing in Sioux City. The shared experiences of raising their large families became the foundation for a friendship that extended beyond the dining room. Their shared love for bridge, holiday decorations, and watching movies brought them even closer. They enjoyed attending chair exercise class and Saturday Mass together.

Living at StoneyBrook, they were able to stop by each other’s suites anytime to visit. They often shared snacks and small gifts back and forth. They got to know the other’s families and looked forward to hearing about visits. Agreeably, their favorite shared activity was having a glass of wine together each day over lunch. Savoring conversation and laughter, they were often the last ones to leave the dining room each day. The joy of their friendship was evident in their words. “It’s been great fun getting acquainted with each other,” Joyce remarked. “It makes it more like home,” agreed Pauline. Pauline, an avid seamstress, found a unique way to share her passion with the StoneyBrook community. Her sewing room became a hub for small repairs, but her most heartfelt creations were the small hearts she crafted and gifted to every resident. This creative spirit led her to Joyce’s suite, where a doll from one of Joyce’s daughters captured Pauline’s imagination. With Joyce’s blessing, Pauline replicated the doll, creating personalized versions as gifts for her family during her 95th birthday celebration.

As Pauline reflected on Joyce’s friendship, she shared, “I don’t know what I’d do without it. Life would be really different for me.” Joyce echoed the sentiment, stating, “And I would say exactly the same thing. I don’t know what I would do without her.” The sisters-at-heart frequently expressed their love for each other, cherishing the connection that brought immeasurable richness to their lives. “Joyce is very good to people. She’s very giving,” Pauline shared. In return, Joyce described Pauline as a “wonderful, wonderful person,” emphasizing that her friendship means everything. Dedicated in memory of Joyce Barnes (1934-2023) Joyce’s legacy lives on not only in the memories of her loved ones but also in the endearing story of friendship she shared with Pauline—a story that reminds us all of the joy of genuine connections in life.

It’s what often lights up a room and something that can cheer someone up when they’re having a bad day. Ensuring you have the perfect smile, is exactly what Dr. Molly Kopf does every day. She’s an orthodontist at Wagner, Kuntz, Grabouski & Kopf Orthodontics. “Your smile is so important,” says Dr. Kopf. “Especially when we think about our front four. They’re the ones that are most noticeable in smiles.” “They’re also some of the ones that cause problems for young kids leading them to need early orthodontic treatment.”

“Usually those braces only go on a couple baby teeth and some permanent teeth,” she says. “We really try to get them in the best position for the best outcome. We may also do an expander for bite issues or crowding. Sometimes we see a narrow upper jaw, and everything is squished together. An expander can help give them some more space in there.” While these treatments may seem scary to kids, Dr. Kopf says their first goal is to make sure everyone feels comfortable.

“For some kiddos, especially those around six, seven or eight years old, there are some issues that if we don’t correct them at a young age, they can cause irreversible damage or can prevent us from correcting them more appropriately in the future.”

“I really have to credit that to my entire team. From the second you walk in we’re trying to make both the parents and kids feel safe. That first exam is usually an easy one – just looking at the mouth and teeth. We try to engage them and ask them what they do for fun. We just know it can be scary so we see it as our role, to make sure they are as relaxed and comfortable as they can be.”

Issues like overcrowding or if their permanent teeth aren’t coming in right.

“Right around this age you start to get your four front teeth. Sometimes they don’t come in right because of crowding or there are extra teeth. If we don’t help some of the permanent teeth come in, they usually just stay up there and get stuck.”

Another common problem with kids can be bite issues such as a cross bite. According to Dr. Kopf, “If not treated, depending on where it is in you mouth, it could cause your jaw to shift and leave it permanently asymmetric.”

“A lot of these issues, if they’re not fixed at a young age, can lead someone to need surgery intervention later in life. That’s so much more excessive than our treatments.” Treatments like braces or expanders. • Dr. Jim Grabouski • Dr. Timothy Kuntz • Dr. JJ Grabouski

HONORING THE L E G AC Y O F

Dr.

Rehan

WITH THE WINTER GALA By: Michaela Feldmann

“My mom, she was just an entire universe of a human being.” Ann Rehan, MD, was everything to her family: a mom, a great cook, a go-getter, and a lover of dogs and musicals. In February 2023, Ann passed away after a brave battle with cancer, but her loved ones knew her legacy should continue. “I was always so proud of her, even as little kid,” says Mary Goebel, Ann’s second-oldest daughter. “Even during parent teacher conferences, I was so proud when my mom came in. She was just like this baller of a human being.” Ann was also incredibly well-known in the Siouxland community for caring for thousands of kids through her practice as a pediatrician.

Fueling that fund are events like the Ann Rehan Goebel Foundation 5K that happened in November and the upcoming Annual Winter Gala at the Marriott Riverfront in South Sioux City, NE on February 24. “We really wanted to have events that embodied her passions and brought people together to uphold her inspiring spirit,” says Mary. “Her loss in the community created this void. I think it shows the need for more people like her and for us to bring more people like her to the spotlight.” Julie Adam, the organizer of the Winter Gala, was one of Ann’s best friends.

“She loved being a pediatrician. That was just a huge part of who she was. She wanted to be a doctor from the time she was in fourth grade. She found it so meaningful to help care for the future of Sioux City. She knew every family that came in. That passion and that personal relationship made her such a great doctor,” explains Mary.

“I really wanted to organize this gala to celebrate the incredible person that will always be in our hearts. Ann made you feel so special and touched the lives of countless people. Her smile, her laugh and passion for life was contagious. You couldn’t get enough of her beautiful soul,” Julie explains.

Ann passed away on February 20, 2023—a day after her 62nd birthday.

Julie says a gala is the perfect way to celebrate Ann.

“We got to spend her birthday with her on the19th. People came from 20 different states to say goodbye at the funeral. It was just a true testament to how many people loved her,” says Mary. Ann’s family knew they didn’t want her legacy to end there, so they created the Ann Rehan Goebel Foundation, which is inspired by Ann’s work as a physician—which wasn’t just a career but also a calling. The goal of the foundation is to provide scholarships to students pursuing fields in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Mary serves as the foundation’s president, while her older sister, Katie Schminke, serves as the vice president. “A lot of people donated, and she never said where she would want funds to go. So, we came up with this idea to keep her legacy going and to fund the education for kids who would hopefully want to follow in her footsteps and become an incredible doctor.”

“She loved dressing up and celebrating life and making an impact in young kids lives. This scholarship and gala fit perfectly to who she was,” Julie says.

Someone who “lived life all the way up.” A tagline from the Ann Rehan Goebel Foundation is “Live life all the way up,” which comes from a Hemingway quote that Ann’s husband, John Goebel, MD, associated with his wife. “It’s something my dad spoke about at her funeral,” Mary says. “‘Nobody lives their life all the way up except bullfighters,’ and my dad said, ‘Hemingway never got to know Ann.’ That quote just embodies her spirit, her zest and her being an absolutely electric human being. If we can help kids fulfill their dreams, that’s exactly what Ann would have wanted.”

Foundation, roofing, water proofing, concrete or insulation – no matter the issue, Pro Seal Solutions has your home protected. “We are a very diverse construction company,” says Amber Haines, Pro Seal Solutions office manager. “We bring solutions for Foundation and leaking basments, high performance coatings (thermal energy, vapor, water, weather barriers, etc.). We also install, replace, and stabilize concrete. Another cool thing we provide are Piering solutions. These go in the ground to reinforce the foundation (New and existing). Our goal is to keep you safe and give you that peace of mind.” The business started in 2017 specializing in spray foam insulation and has grown from there. But much like their beginnings, they don’t shy away from a project. “Our team completed a foundation repair recently on an older home. Something you might not realize is once a foundation issue reaches a certain level, you can’t open doors or windows. After we got done, the owner was finally able to open one of his doors after 10 years. That is such a satisfying thing to see. It’s such a feeling of accomplishment.”

And they’re not done growing. They recently became the new Heritage Homes distributer for Iowa. “We are really excited about this new venture,” says Amber. “Part of it entails going out and visiting the client on the job site to see what they want done. It also allows us to be proactive instead of reactive to foundation repairs. We are now able to get in from the beginning and do detail work for the foundation and even offer 30-year basement warranty solutions.” For the team members at Pro Seal Solutions, it all comes down to communication and trust. “Open communication with the customer, especially during a stressful situation like a leak in their basement or roof, is so important,” says Amber. “We believe in going out as soon as we can to take a look and get them the estimate. It can be stressful, and our job is to help take some of that stress away.” As they look down the road, Amber says they hope to continue being the area’s building solutions provider and be the household name in Siouxland and beyond.

CHECKING UP ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Its ok not to be ok. That’s one of the most important messages Jessica Barnes wants you to know. She’s the community-based services director with Heartland Counseling Services and has been making mental health a priority for most of her life.

By Michaela Feldmann

“Mental health is for everyone. It’s part of our whole picture as far as taking care of ourselves. Mental, physical and spiritual health all work together.” Mental health includes our feelings, emotions and mood and impacts everything we do on a daily basis. Jessica says if your mental health is suffering, you might notice that you don’t enjoy doing the things you used to, you might isolate yourself more or be more irritable with people in your life and it might impact your attendance at work. And just like it impacts everything we do, it also impacts everyone we know. “Mental health is really hard for some people to talk about. There’s a lot of things that play into that – age, gender, culture and other demographics. Certain cultures have more of a stigma around it.” Jessica says they see that firsthand in the Midwest – a place where we will step up to support our neighbors and communities no matter what, but a place where many of us struggle to step up for our own health at times. “People in rural areas and especially men, are less likely to speak about their mental health or seek services. If the stigma is there that there is something wrong with you or it’s embarrassing or shameful to seek services for struggling with depression, anxiety or past trauma, people will suffer in silence.” That’s where Heartland Counseling Services comes in. One of their main missions: decrease the stigma around mental health and increase awareness and services. Jessica says changing that stigma, starts at a small level.

Talk about it with people in your lives in a way that you are normalizing it. Talk about it like you are going to the doctor for a checkup. “Most people wouldn’t be embarrassed to say, ‘I’m going to get my blood pressure checked.’ But mental health is behind in terms of people talking about it. Here at Heartland Counseling Services, we talk about our own struggles with mental health or our own kids needing help. Just do that with the people in your lives and you will really start to see a shift.” Jessica says fortunately, they have seen a shift in the last several years around mental health. “The pandemic definitely had an impact. It really increased a lot of struggles for people in terms of finances and their health which in turn impacts our mental health. But we also saw a lot more funding being allocated for mental health.” That funding allows providers awareness and access to services.

to

in Sioux City and community-based wrap around services such as their day program that helps adults struggling with mental illness, substance use disorder or that lack social support. Their services also include community recovery and peer support where workers go out in the community and help with anything needed to promote independence. “All of our services help make a difference. It’s just so important for everyone to know, it’s ok not to be ok. We are human beings, and we all need help at certain times.”

increase

“Everyone was forced to put a system in place to do remote or telehealth services. Those are here to stay. For us, we serve a lot of counties in rural Nebraska, and it allows us to keep giving those services regardless of lack of transportation or geographical distance.” Services like outpatient therapy for mental health or substance abuse, permanent supported housing to help get chronically homeless individuals housing

MEET THE VETERINARIAN PROFESSIONAL LIFE Who or what inspired you to become a veterinarian? As a high school student, I knew I wanted to pursue the medical field, but I was unsure in what capacity. I had a love for animals, so I started shadowing a mixed animal veterinarian and that is when I realized I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine as a career.

The most challenging aspect of this career is not being able to treat and fix every animal that comes in. Sometimes this is due to the particular illness, financial limitations, or even the limitations of being in general practice rather than specialty hospital. It is tough not to take those to heart; we would save every animal if we could, but unfortunately this is not the reality.

What are some of the best inspiring and/or funny moments you have had working as a vet? (Maybe a story about saving a pet’s life?) Where did you receive your training and what do you I think the one case I had that will stick with me forever is specialize in? diagnosing a dog with a somewhat uncommon illness. This I went to Kansas State University and graduated with a dog came in for lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. After doing Bachelor’s in Animal Science. I then attended initial bloodwork and seeing some electrolyte imbalances, we University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine for my ran a second test which diagnosed her with Addison’s disease. veterinary degree, graduating in 2022. I do not specialize in any one certain aspect of veterinary medicine, but I really Addison’s disease is a life-threatening condition where the body doesn’t produce an adequate amount of critical steroids. enjoy internal medicine cases, preventative care, and am very interested to continue exploring my love of radiology. We learn about this disease in school, but it is not something we see very often in general practice. This dog was started on medication and IV fluids, but she was able to return home after Tell us about your veterinary practice and the services a few days. She now comes to the clinic for monthly injections to you provide. What makes you unique? South Sioux Animal Hospital is a three-doctor, small animal supplement the steroids her body isn’t making, and she’s doing great! veterinary clinic. We have been an established veterinary clinic for over 50 years. We want to help your pets in all aspects of their lives, whether that is administering vaccines In regard to funny stories, I think it will always amaze me what dogs and cats will eat. I have seen rocks, toys, nerf darts and at their annual visit or providing care when they are sick. more. They typically do well after the objects are surgically We offer many different services such as bloodwork, removed, but I will always be shocked by what they will eat. radiographs, dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and so much more. We strive to listen to every concern of our clients in regard to their pets. We always try to identify the best treatment plan for each individual animal.

What do you find most rewarding about being a vet? I think the most rewarding aspect of veterinary medicine is seeing a sick or hurt animal and being able to treat them and get them back to their homes with a correct diagnosis. We aren’t always able to get a specific diagnosis for every case, but when there is and it’s something that is treatable, it is really rewarding to see the animals do well and give the owners a definitive answer.

What do you consider the most important things about caring for a pet, including what they should stay up-to-date on? Annual exams, vaccines, and heartworm tests are very important. Just as important is heartworm, flea and tick prevention. I think many people don’t realize that heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes, and it can take up to six months from the time a pet is bitten by the offending mosquito until we can detect it on a test. It is very important to use appropriate preventatives year-round.

What’s a common misconception most people have about animals/pets? Recently grain-free diets became a fad, but what people do not realize is that they are potentially bad for animals. There have been recent studies that link grain-free diets as one possible cause of dilated cardiomyopathy, which is a type of heart disease that can result in heart failure. Having your pet on a well-balanced diet is very important for their overall health, and if you are unsure whether the food your pet is eating is appropriate or not, talk with your veterinarian; that is what we’re here for! What is your favorite aspect of practicing veterinary medicine? My favorite aspect of being a veterinarian is the challenge every day brings. Every day brings something new; a scared animal who is slow to trust, a tricky diagnosis, a new procedure, and more! That is what pushes me to be a better veterinarian. If it was easy, it wouldn’t be fun. What advice would you give to young professionals looking to work with animals and become a vet? Make sure you really know you want to do this job. Go shadow/ work at different types of practices and talk with many different professionals. This job is not for the faint of heart; it is tough. Being a veterinarian is rewarding, but it’s a (long) commitment and days can be tough on your mental and physical health.

PERSONAL LIFE Tell us about your life growing up. I grew up in a small town in central Illinois. I have two siblings, an older sister Hannah, and a younger brother, Noah. I was involved in pretty much every sport until high school. Once in high school, I put my time and effort into competitive cheerleading, student council, and youth group activities.

Do you have a personal motto? I don’t have a personal motto, but I think having a strong faith and leaning on that in every aspect of my life is important. What do you like most about the Sioux City community? I just moved to Sioux City this past summer, but I like the fact that it feels like a smaller town but there are still many activities and attractions. How do you spend your spare time? Any hobbies? I truly enjoy watching sports and being outside. You can find me watching Twins, Colts and K-State games every weekend. What would you tell your younger self? Learn to believe in yourself. What’s the best piece of advice you ever received? Don’t sweat the small stuff. It is extremely easy to let every little thing get to you, but in order to move on to the next day, you have to let some things go and not stress about them. What are you most proud of? I am proud of getting to this point in my career. There were many times in veterinary school where I questioned whether I wanted to do this. Now, I am proud to be where I am, and it has been cool to watch this journey unfold. How do you stay motivated, both personally and professionally? Having an amazing support system that consists of my family and friends keeps me motivated. Getting to come home and talk about cases and my day with my husband, who understands the challenges of being a veterinarian, also really keeps me motivated and sane at the same time.

What is one goal you’re currently striving toward? Right now, I do not necessarily have one goal that I am striving Did you have a favorite/special pet growing up? to achieve. I am trying to work on improving my daily surgeries Favorite animal? and appointments and learning to be confident in my skill set. We always had Labrador Retrievers growing up, and then at one I am still very early in my career, so I am trying to learn as much point we had two cats, and four turtles. as I can, so I can be the best veterinarian I can be. Tell us about your family today (including pets!). I got married in 2022 right after finishing vet school in the Grand Teton Mountains. My husband, Taw, is also a veterinarian who does feedlot consulting throughout Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. We have one dog, a black lab named Aggie. My parents live in Illinois and my siblings currently live in Minnesota and Kansas.

Leading the Way

UnityPoint Health – Sioux City’s New President Takes the Reins By: Michaela Feldmann

“There is always something to learn and anytime you try something new or work with different people, you learn from them. I think that’s one of the best gifts we get.” Jane Arnold is no stranger to learning something new. Today, she’s marking her third month leading UnityPoint Health Sioux City in her new role as president. “I don’t think there’s been a day I haven’t learned something,” shares Jane. Jane’s what you call, a lifelong learner. She’s been learning, growing and building her skillset since she got to UnityPoint Health in 2000. “I took a job here as an occupational therapist right after graduating from The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota. That was 23 years ago, and I never looked back.” Jane then began moving through the ranks of the organization from occupational therapist to program director of the inpatient acute rehab center. She then took on the role of director of inpatient and outpatient ancillary services. “It was an amazing experience working on the inpatient floors. I didn’t just work with other therapists but had the opportunity to work with nurses, physicians and everyone involved in patient care. “ In 2013, Jane took on another role and became the regional vice president of operations for UnityPoint at Home for Sioux City and Fort Dodge. And, she had the opportunity to go back to school. She added another degree to her cap: Masters in Health Services Administration through the University of South Dakota.

In her free time, Jane enjoys spending time with her family

Jane joins staff of UnityPoint Clinic Rehabilitation Services for a ribbon cutting at Sunnybrook Medical Plaza

“There are so many amazing benefits UnityPoint Health offers including tuition assistance. This allowed me to grow in my learning journey while also growing in my leadership roles. About three years later, Jane found herself in a new role once again. “The CEO at the time asked me to come back and run home care and work in the hospital.” Soon it evolved into running all the clinics and overseeing inpatient and outpatient departments. “That’s one of the great things about working at UnityPoint Health. They’ve allowed me to grow as a leader, not just in the hospital but also in the market. It’s provided me incredible professional growth and experience.” It’s that experience on the floors and in the clinics working with physicians and other healthcare professionals that would set her apart in her new role as the market president. “I don’t think you can truly understand the commitment level and hard work healthcare professionals put in unless you’ve been through it. I’ve been where my colleagues are. I’ve worked on the floors and in clinics with all team members including nurses, therapists, techs, ancillary staff and physicians. I can relate to what they are facing because I’ve been there. Health care is hard work, but you show up every day for your patients.”

That determination is something Jane’s parents and grandparents instilled in her at a young age.

“Both of my parents worked full-time and showed up every day for me, my brother and sister. They taught us that you show up for your job, work hard, do the best you can every day and in the end it all pays off. That never left me.” Jane is proof that hard work pays off. As she looks forward on her next several months, she says her goals are three-fold: continue providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to the Sioux City community, invest in the workforce and support their provider base. “We are dedicated to making sure people get the care they need here at home, and we want them to feel confident about it. This is truly a great community and UnityPoint Health is a great place to work. I am humbled to be in this role and look forward to leading this organization into the coming years.”

College Cupboard provides important resource for students By: Joanne Fox

Unlike Mother Hubbard, this Sioux City College’s Cupboard is rarely bare. Through the collaborative resources of staff and faculty, St. Luke’s College staff and faculty provided initial donations to launch the cupboard in February 2021. Dr. Ericson, former College Recruiter Sierra Matthews, and faculty and staff created a vision to help students. The food pantry idea was developed and funds were quickly raised through donations from faculty, staff, friends of the College, and community resources. “No student should have to worry about their next meal or their family’s next meal,” Dr. Ericson emphasized. “At St. Luke’s College, our students are welcome to the College Cupboard to find resources they need to lessen the burden of food insecurities.” The first donation to the College Cupboard came during Covid in December of 2020. “St. Luke’s College faculty and staff participated in UnityPoint Health - Sioux City’s holiday contest,” President Ericson stated. “Participants created sculptures made from non-perishable food items that were donated to the community.” The College sponsored a gingerbread house of canned food items donated by college faculty and staff. The College team garnered first place and all food items from the gingerbread house kick-started the College Cupboard. Donations from St. Luke’s College alumni, staff, and faculty fund the College Cupboard. Those same donors tend to help stock the College Cupboard, too, as well as community support.

“Our Cupboard continues to be stocked with rotating inventory, so our students have a variety of items to choose from to help feed and support their families,” President Ericson said. “We have even provided several gas cards to our students to be able to put gas in their cars, so they can attend some of our clinical rotations outside of Sioux City. A typical user of the College Cupboard might be a single mom with two young children going to St. Luke’s College full-time. “However, students who work full-time, and are going to college full-time and might not get paid until the following week, could take advantage of the merchandise,” President Ericson said. “Actually, all the students, staff, and faculty could use the College Cupboard if they needed to.” The feedback has been more than gratifying, as the College Cupboard has been well-used. In addition, the College recently provided six students’ families with a full Thanksgiving Dinner from donations from faculty and staff. It’s the best part of having the College Cupboard at St. Luke’s College - having such an important resource for our students.

College Cupboard provides for students struggling to feed themselves and/or their families. Located on the first floor of St. Luke’s College Open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

New Federal Requirement For Companies BEWARE OF MASSIVE PENALTIES AND ACT NOW! The Federal Government has enacted a new law – the Corporate Transparency Act – which carries extreme penalties and strict deadlines for companies. This new law was recently enacted and unfortunately, has not been widely publicized, thereby causing a stir among not only company members and shareholders, but accountants, attorneys, and other professionals. Beginning January 1, 2024, a beneficial ownership information (BOI) report must be filed with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). More than 32 million entities (most of which are small businesses) must file this report. Failure to timely file the report may result in a civil penalty of $500 per day, as well as criminal penalties up to $10,000 and two years in prison. The following is a checklist which may be of use to you or anyone you know with a limited liability company, corporation, or other company: 1. Identify if your business is the type of entity which must file a BOI report.

3. If your business is required to file a BOI report, follow these steps:

• Know your company’s entity structure. If the company is an LLC or corporation, it must file a BOI report unless it qualifies for an exemption.

• Identify your beneficial owners. • Contact each beneficial owner and let them know the Corporate Transparency Act requires the company to report personal information about them to FinCEN. Obtain the information which must be reported.

2. Determine if the company qualifies for an exemption. • Confirm whether the company is exempt as a “large operating company,” meaning it has more than twenty full time employees in the United States, an operating presence in the U.S., and has filed a tax return for the previous year showing more than $5 Million in gross sales from U.S. sources. • Determine if the Company is exempt as an “inactive entity,” meaning it was in existence on or before January 1, 2020, is not actively conducting business, is not owned by a foreign person, has not changed owners in the last year, hasn’t sent or received funds in an amount greater than $1,000 in the past year, and does not hold any assets. • Verify if any other exemption applies to your company.

4. Ensure the information will be reported and kept current. • Updated reports must be timely filed any time there is a change in the reported information. 5. File the initial BOI report. • For entities existing prior to January 1, 2024, you can file the BOI report from January 1, 2024 until January 1, 2025. It is best practice to file as soon as possible so you don’t forget and face the above-mentioned significant penalties! • Decide if you want to file the report with FinCEN yourself, or if you want the assistance of a professional.

This new law will significantly impact how LLC’s, corporations, and other businesses are handled from a legal perspective. Start the new year off right and contact an attorney immediately to act on this time sensitive matter! Does this make your temperature rise?

Owning a piece of the American dream has been a life goal for many. Historically, a first time home purchase came in the time of life after marriage, however, the single family home is often being purchased by a single, and to go one step further, a single female.

Fortunately, 40 years later, women continue to gain independence and equality.

According to Bankrate. com, single women homeownership was up by 17 percent in 2023, compared to single men at nine percent. The analysis found that in 48 of the 50 states, single women were more likely to purchase a home than single men. This is an impressive statistic considering that before 1974, women were legally prohibited from obtaining a mortgage without a co-signer. Before the passage of the Fair Housing Act’s prohibitions against “sex” discrimination in housing-related transactions, and the protections of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, it was commonplace for a widow to need a male relative as a co-signer. Under federal law, women had no legal recourse for this or any other lending discrimination.

Eighty-seven percent of women agree that having to be married to purchase a home is outdated and they would not hesitate to consider buying on their own, according to the National Association of REALTORS®. For anyone, the purchase of real estate is one of the best assets you will ever own and in today’s market, it is an asset that continues to appreciate. Homeownership may bring stability or added income to your life. Whatever the reason, real estate is a solid investment and can be purchased when the time is right for you financially, regardless of your relationship status.

I have a personal friend who shared with me when she opened her first business in the 1980s, this was exactly her situation, but rather than a co-signer, she was charged a higher rate of interest for her small business loan because she was unmarried.
