Teaching your child the importance of a good work ethic starts early on! April 23rd marks “Take Your Daughter to Work Day!” Make the most of their visit with these easy, yet helpful, hints:
Even though your child is super excited to spend the day with you, your everyday work activities may not be super exciting for them. Plan your day to show them around the office, the fun things that you do at your job and give them the hands on experience of what a typical work day for you would be like.
1. Plan Ahead:
Talk to your boss or supervisor and see what type of activities that your child can do throughout the day. That way you can still do your job while they are preoccupied with activities that they will find fun and interesting. 2. Create Activities:
3. Talk to Your Kids: At the end of your day, sit down with your child and have them tell you what they have learned throughout the day. You will be amazed by their answers and even learn something from them as well!

For the Young, Broke Professional: Because Traveling Should Not Just Be A Luxury For The Rich By Deidre N. Mathis Reviewed By: Michael Zeiger, Reference Librarian Harris Branch Library Are you a Young Broke Professional ( YBP) with a passion to explore the world? If so, read on!
well-defined, topically-organized advice meant for a time-crunched audience.
At 26 years of age and being only recently employed after graduate school, YBP Deidre Mathis resolved to stop rationalizing, “I can’t travel because I haven’t got enough money / time / travel companions / knowledge / courage to explore the world.” Equipped with a constructive attitude and a resourceful mind, Mathis embarked on a lifechanging “gap year” of international travel. Today, Mathis has traveled to 23 countries and adopted a new slogan: “Traveling is NOT just a hobby for me, it’s my lifestyle. I save money to travel, I work for travel, I live to travel.”
Overall, Wanderlust aptly addresses the saving strategies, paperwork and preparations necessary for travel (and includes a packing guide, a pretravel checklist, and a trip-planning questionnaire). Throughout, Mathis provides a basic cost comparison for accommodations, encourages avoidance of the tourist bubble, suggests guidelines for managing resources abroad and offers a reasonable consideration of safety concerns and myths. Notably, special consideration is given to the solo, as well as the student, traveler.
In her new book, Wanderlust, Mathis distills her personal experiences traveling abroad into a practical introductory resource full of common sense tips for YBPs wondering how to capably follow in her footsteps. Economical in its construction and execution, Mathis’ work reads like a framework of
Overwhelmingly, Mathis stresses that the key to inexpensive travel is to “research, research, research” in order to find the best deals and to develop the best strategies for both enjoyment and safety. Appropriately, Wanderlust contains a host of hyperlinks to useful online resources, which is best taken advantage of on web-enabled e-reading

With regard to both travel planning and execution, Mathis displays the breadth of her experience by consistently listing a number of options for her readers to explore in order to maximize their value during their journeys. Ultimately, Mathis’ recommendations are grounded and informative, are often reasoned out for the reader with pros and cons, and are repeated only to emphasize importance.
As Mathis explains, YBP travel helps one mature, get over fears and do what one wants. The experience often grants career skills, such as budgeting, time management, writing, diversity and people skills and adaptability. In some cases, it even allows an individual to learn the art of being alone and happy. If you would like to seize the day by seeing more of the world or better yourself by becoming a global citizen, then Deidre Mathis’ Wanderlust is a great place to start.

Dear Diary,
I am going on a 6 day vacation! By: Kathy Friend
How to make 10 pieces of clothing work for your spring get away! Let’s pretend you have only a few hours to pack for a six-day vacation. Could you do it? Most of us fall into one of two categories when it comes to packing for a trip: we are either a skimpy packer or an over packer. The skimpy packer is someone who is determined to only take a carry on, and finds themselves needing a few more pieces of clothing to get through the trip. Conversely, the over packer will take 10 pairs of shoes for an overnight stay, you know, just in case.
Yes, those 10 pieces of clothing will in fact get you through a travel day to your vacation destination, six days of sun and fun and a travel day home.
Dear Diary –
Travel Day,
Here is how it breaks down:
I need to wear something in layers for the flight. I am going from sub-zero temps to sunny 80 degrees.
Smart packing is something that requires practice, a little planning, and letting go of the “what if ’s.”
• Comfy USA Black tunic tank top • Comfy USA Sheer dot tee • Ming Wang sweater jacket • Comfy USA leggings • Oka B ballet flat • Brighton tote bag • Brighton hoop earrings • Brighton Sunglasses • Brighton Statement necklace
First, start with the basics:
1. Walking shorts 2. Leggings 3. Maxi skirt
(one that can be worn as a skirt or a dress)
4. Long sleeve top
(or layering piece)
Then add in some shoes:
1. A flat that is comfortable for long days of walking
5. Tank 6. Tunic 7. Sun dress 8. Sweater 9. Shirt skirt 10. Bathing suit
Dear Diary,
My husband told me on our first day of vacation that we will be doing some sight-seeing and going to a nice dinner. Ugh, what to wear!
Day: 2. A wedge 3. A dressy heel
NIGHT:
Finally, a few accessories: 1. A tote (shopper) 4. A belt

sass Dear Diary,
Day:
Our vacation plans today include a little time at the spa and shopping. Tonight we are going to dinner and dancing with some fun people we met yesterday at the beach. I think I know what I am going to wear!
NIGHT: Comfy USA leggings • Karen Kane tunic • Oka B ballet flat • Long turquoise necklace with earrings • Brighton Sunglasses • Brighton tote bag •
Comfy USA tunic tank • Comfy USA sheet polka dot tee • Joseph Ribkoff skirt • Dyables sandal • Brighton cross body bag
Dear Diary,
Day: Bathing Suit • Joseph Ribkoff skirt • Brighton hoop earrings • Brighton Sunglasses • Brighton Wedge • Brighton tote bag • Saffron and Nutmeg short necklace
I don’t think I want to come home. I have enough clothes for another week! Today I think we are going to charter a boat. Can you imagine? A full day on a chartered boat! That will surely relieve all my stress and make me forget about the horrible weather back home. Tonight I think we are going to just stay on the boat for dinner. Someone said something about eating what we catch?
Dear Diary,
Well, it’s a new day of our vacation. I feel like I need a little exercise, and my husband loves ancient ruins. So as a matter of compromise today we are going hiking. But of course, I plan on looking fashionable! Tonight I think we are going to have a casual dinner. Maybe pizza.
NIGHT:
Day: Lisette Walking shorts • Artex tunic • Brighton long pendant necklace • Brighton chain belt • Brighton hoop earrings • Brighton cross body bag • Brighton Wedge 10

BASIC
PACKING TIPS • Don’t forget the Shout Wipes (or Tide stick) and Wrinkle Release! A Tide stick or Shout wipe will save your vacation wardrobe in case of a tragic margarita spill. Wrinkle release isn’t just for wrinkles - it can also freshen up already worn clothing. • Be sure everything you bring is comfortable and something you feel great in! A vacation isn’t the time to test out a new style. Also be sure to bring a nice variety of body conscious pieces and things that are less form fitting. We all know that sometimes on vacations we can hold extra water and we might eat more and exercise less. You want to feel great in your vacation clothing, not be uncomfortable with something that feels too tight. • No new shoes. It seems no matter how great new shoes are, there is a period of time when we are breaking them in. Nothing can wreck a vacation quicker than blisters and achy feet!
Dear Diary,
We have a few hours to kill before we need to catch a cab for the flight home. I plan on sipping on some fruity drinks with umbrellas in them by the pool.
Day:
Bathing Suit • Lisette Walking Shorts • Oka B ballet flat • Brighton cross body bag • Brighton hoop • earrings • Brighton Sunglasses
Dear Diary,
It’s time to head back to reality, and catch the plane ride home. It’s been a great vacation and I am so pleased I planned wisely. I have plenty of room in my suitcase for all the treasures I purchased while on vacation. No “extra baggage” charges for me!

Draw Spring Into Your
Workspace By: Kristine Bergman, Interior Designer, RID
April in Michiana is the time when we hope the spring weather is finally here. The gray Indiana sky is turning a vibrant blue and nature is starting to bring some happy hues to the outside world. But, the problem is that most days you are stuck inside your office, which has become boring and drab. Spring is a great time to bring a fresh attitude to your workspace. Here are five great, yet affordable, ways to bring spring into your office:
Bring The Outdoors In
Bringing nature into your workspace has many benefits. First, it adds a splash of color to a room that may have too many neutral and subtle colors, which many offices do. Plants are a natural air filter, absorbing harmful toxins or unpleasant odors and making your workspace a more pleasant environment to work. Add a potted plant or bouquet of fresh spring flowers to your desk. The vibrant colors can be inspirational and a boost to your creativity. If you are an avid gardener, this is a great way to enjoy your labor of love every day at work. Examples of some popular plants for your office include English Ivy, Ferns, Spider Plant, Dracaena and the Bamboo Plant. These are easy plants to care for, requiring infrequent watering and little more than fluorescent light.
Brighten Up With Accessories
Replace your boring black, tan or grey work accessories with new ones featuring bright colors or patterns. Office supplies tend to come in very neutral colors, which add nothing to your workspace. No one wants to stare at bland, dull colors all day. 12
APRIl 2015 | SASSY
Replace your plastic pencil cup with a colored glass. Purchase a floral coffee mug to add some color. Change out the yellow sticky notes for the rainbow colored note sheets. Add a piece of artwork to enhance your workspace. Take a print with a theme or colors that you enjoy and frame it in an inexpensive frame. Change out your photos. It is time to update your kids’ class photos with shots from your last family vacation or outing. No photos in your workspace, well then it is a good time to add some.
Refresh Your Home Office
This tip is directed at those with a home office, since most do not have control over the décor of a traditional office space. But if you are fortunate to work at home, spring is a great time to add a fresh coat of paint to your walls. And don’t just settle for one color. Add an accent color to one of your walls to liven up your space. Luminary designer Bunny Williams states, “A color scheme that has an interesting mix of subtle tones with bright accents is timeless.” Some great colors to try are a blend of cool greens and blues, sultry violets, citrusy corals and buttery yellows. But, it’s your office, so choose the colors that appeal to you.
Add drama, color and style by changing out your window coverings for the spring. Change out your blinds to soft window treatments with pretty spring patterns. Adding a pleated valance to drapery panels can create the illusion of taller windows.
Spring Clean Your Space During the winter your office space may have undergone its own hibernation underneath piles of paper and a menagerie of assorted office supplies. Awaken your workspace with a little elbow grease by a thorough spring cleaning.
and change your screensaver setting. There are also many great free desktop screensavers and wallpapers online. Search for spring images and see what is available for download. Spring is a season of renewal. The flowers start blooming and the trees wake-up from their winter sleep. It is also a great time to renew your office space.
Sort and organize your piles, purge unnecessary files and notes, reorganize your supply drawer. Better yet, now is the time to go electronic. Maybe you can eliminate the array of written notes with a more efficient digital solution.
Update Your Screensaver Most professionals spend numerous minutes each day staring at their screensaver. And many of these same people don’t realize that they can change the screensaver. Get rid of the flowing lines or floating logo and replace them with custom photos or images. Use family photos, vacation photos or nature photos that you have taken. Just download your digital photos to your computer
Know where to turn.
Turn a plain space into a powerful place!
Bad luck seemed to be obsessed with Larry Bybee. In recent years, he had suffered through a stroke, a heart transplant, and the loss of his job. Times were hard, and he and his fiancée Louise were convinced it couldn’t get any worse. But, they were sadly mistaken. After skirting death on several occasions, Larry was diagnosed with cancer. Now, unable to pay their bills and the utility company theatening to shut off power in their home, Larry and Louise were expected in Chicago for emergency surgery. As their world fell apart, it was clear they needed help. That’s when they turned to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. And they’re sure glad they did. Along with much needed prayer and counseling, St. Vincent de Paul provided both financial assistance and the peace of mind necessary to fight cancer. Today, Larry is cancer free and Louise, well, she couldn’t be more grateful. Larry’s story shows how our mission to help others impacts real lives. Prioritize Your Spring Cleaning T he sun streaming through streaky windows is like a chip in your manicure; every time you look at it you will think: I’ve got to take of that. Pronto!
Who has the time (and the will power) to carve out extra hours in her schedule for annual spring cleaning? It almost seems quaint. When, pray tell, is that supposed to happen? Squeeze in a 30-minute manicure? Absolutely! Cobble together hours to hunt down cobwebs? No thanks!
The dirty truth is that spring cleaning must happen to maintain your home’s value and prepare for outdoor summer fun. Prioritize the jobs, make a plan. Get. It. Done.
Pick Your Audience
Whom do you want to appreciate all of your hard work? You, of course, but you may also want to consider potential buyers if you plan to sell your home this year. Is it your neighbors? Don’t pretend that we all don’t have an inner Jones complex. Perhaps you’re hosting a major social event this summer. Take care of the mundane tasks so you can later focus on the fun details.
Tour Your Property
Grab your planner and take a tour of your home and property through the perspective of a potential buyer, guest or neighbor. Where does your eye go first? Make a list of jobs as you discover them. Ignore the daily cleanup, i.e. the laundry left on the steps, the dishes screaming at you in the sink. Don’t forget to visit the storage room, closets, shed and landscaping. 14
APRIl 2015 | SASSY
Break your drafted list into a two-column master list: one column is a list of the jobs that you want to tackle yourself; the other is a list of the jobs you could hire out. (An additional column would be helpful to organize the businesses you contact and their quotes.) The process of listing will sort out your priorities and help you delegate work that can be done by someone else for a reasonable price.
Call For Help
Estimate what your time is worth. Consider your budget and factor in your upcoming work schedule. Hiring out some jobs can be affordable and practical. Mr. Handyman of Northern St. Joseph and Elkhart County charges $138 for the first hour of work. They charge $48 for each half hour following. Estimates are given over the phone, and if requested, they will pick up necessary materials during their scheduled work time. They do most household jobs, big and small.
By: Jackie Folkert
Some big jobs you should schedule soon because the dates that businesses have available get picked over very early in the season. Window washing businesses, for example, will schedule a date to quote your job before they will schedule the cleaning. Don’t be afraid to negotiate a price, either. You may also consider breaking up one big job such as window washing by hiring out the second floor and cleaning the first floor yourself. If you’ve never taken advantage of a house cleaning service, now is the time to give it a whirl. National companies such as Merry Maids, The Maids and Molly Maids can take a huge chunk of the cleaning off of your shoulders. If you usually do the everyday cleaning yourself, consider hiring it out for a week so that you can focus on the spring jobs. And don’t ignore the teenagers in your neighborhood—they might want to make some quick cash by helping you clean up your yard.
Get A Second Opinion
Do you suspect that you may be listing your home in the near future? Request that a realtor assess your home’s potential to attract buyers. Or maybe you want to set the stage for a home makeover. Ask an interior decorator to offer her advice. Their opinions may direct your spring cleaning plan. Susan Sager of 5 Star Lakeshore Real Estate said you need to consider what buyers notice when they see your home. Walk to the sidewalk in front of your house, turn around and consider your
property. How would you rate your curb appeal? “You have got to see the front door,” Sager said. “Don’t let bushes cover it. Paint the front door. No flaking paint. Add sparkling hardware.” She suggested painting your shutters and pruning overgrown landscaping. Nobody likes a jungle for a flowerbed— especially critical buyers. “You should keep up the lawn so it’s not a weedfest. The lawn prepares the buyer for what’s inside,” she said. Exterior curb appeal is indicative of how well the home is kept on the interior. Audrey Laureys of Comfort Living Design in Granger said that spring is the time to give special attention to your home’s exterior. Pressure washing the siding, touching up fading paint and sprucing up the landscaping are ways to add to the long-term value of your home. Revitalize the inside with fresh paint. Clean and repair the walls. Your home doesn’t need to be as fashionable as a house on HGTV, but it should be relatively updated. If your home needs major replacements or repairs “do the upgrades now and enjoy it before you flip it,” Sager said. Updating appliances, flooring, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures or countertops grab attention.
Laureys said that small projects like organizing closets with built-in closet systems is always a good idea. Guests always appreciate places to organize their belongings, as well. Annual spring cleaning is incentive to attack the jobs that have been on your radar all winter. Be intentional so the cleaning gets done without grief, and by Memorial Day you will be ready to let the sunshine in.

Spring Break 2015
is here! For many, it is a bit daunting to even think about putting on a bathing suit after a long and cozy winter. Our body confidence can be low at the beginning of swimsuit season because we have all gotten used to covering up with lots of layers. Perhaps we ate too many sweets in February and missed a few planned workouts in the weeks leading up to vacation. Fear not, here is a bathing suit-ready workout created to accomplish three key goals to help you look, but more importantly, to feel like the beach beauty that you aspire to be.
By: Abbi Pollyea Photos By: Cole Pollyea
Begin with a brisk walk, some jumping jacks, or run up and down the stairs a few times. Go through the movements in order, read through before you begin. Have a safe and fun spring break! 1.
"Additude Leg Drop" Start position: Support upper body with elbows and firmly imprint low spine to the ground. Pelvis should be in a posterior tilt. With hips turned out and knees slightly bent, place right ankle firmly over left. To perform move, drop bottom leg half-way to ground and then return to start. Repeat 12-15 reps.
2.
"Bow and Arrow" Start position: Right leg in air, left leg on ground with bent knee, maintaining posterior tilt, twist toward lifted leg for 12-15 reps. *Do moves 1 and 2 with Rt. Leg on top, then lifted, and then do the other side. *Primary focus is the abdominals. *modification-Put a pillow behind low back throughout.
3.
"The Plank Dance" Starting position: Begin in a Plank, (top of push-up), with right Leg extended and lifted. Reach right leg out to right side as far as you can and tap the ground two times then bring right knee to left elbow. Follow a beat like you are dancing! Return to start to complete one rep. Perform 12-15 reps.
5.

A Way for Women to

n Chinese philosophy it is held that even the slightest wave of the hand can move molecules to the end of the universe. That ripple effect, albeit on a smaller scale, was what one of the organizers of the THRIVE event series had in mind when creating a day-long interactive workshop for women. The event, organized by the Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative at Saint Mary’s College and sponsored by 1st Source Bank, Ignite Michiana and SASSY Magazine, will take place from 8:30 A.M. to 4 P.M. Wednesday, May 27th at Saint Mary’s. The cost to attend is $45, which includes a continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. Joan McClendon, a local author, college instructor and Associate Project Director for the Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative, said the idea for the event originated in 2010, with the dream she and co-author, Jaimee Bingle, had of writing a book about empowering area women through stories of faith. Two years later, they finished Life on the Fringe: Testimonies of Women Moving Beyond Desperation to Faith, which compiled the stories of nearly 40 women who overcame difficult times through their faith. After the book’s success, McClendon began a mission to find a platform for encouraging local women to share their leadership gifts while inspiring and empowering them to engage with each other. “I sit across the table from women all the time who are looking for a place to engage with other women, a place to be real. I wanted to create that place in our community,” McClendon said. A short search led her to Martha Smith, Director of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative at Saint Mary's College.
in Michiana
Smith appreciated that the conference aligned so well with the college’s mission to be a pioneer in the education of women and an academic community where women develop their talents and prepare to make a difference in the world. The conference is also in keeping with the emphasis Father Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, placed on the whole person – mind, heart, body and soul.
quite deliberate about creating an event where women not only engage one another, but also themselves. Their hope is that women will find both inspiration and empowerment through the presentations of other women who are much like them.
1st Source Bank also found that the event aligned well with its work in providing support for women leaders.
These women include keynote speakers Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, Tonya Brothers-Bridge, Chief of Staff for Indiana Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann and Norma Williams, a TEDxCountyLineRoad presenter.
“A place to engage with other women, a place to be real.” “We are dedicated to providing support to women in our community,” noted Julie Herring of 1st Source. “We’ve had a successful partnership with Saint Mary’s College to provide women leaders with value-added networking and educational opportunities through the THRIVE seminar series. To be able to sponsor this one-day event focused on inspiring the women of Michiana is an amazing opportunity. We recognize the significant impact women have on family, business and our community, and are committed to providing assistance to advance their financial fortitude, health and overall well-being.” The event offers a full day of engagement between presenters and attendees. Unlike many other conferences, its organizers were
“We intentionally chose to spotlight a diverse group of women with gifts and talents in our region,” McClendon said.
In addition, a series of 45-minute breakout sessions will take place throughout the day. The first of the two morning sessions will feature Terri Russ, Mickey Hay, Kim Becker and Alesha Serozynski. The second will be presented by Londa Harwell, Renée Fleming, Alyssia Coates and Alisa Destefano. The afternoon session will feature Velvet Canada, Tammy Weisweaver, Charisse McCrorey and Bridgette Clark. The event begins with breakfast and networking; other items on the agenda include an “Ask the Doctor” question-andanswer session and live entertainment during lunch. Organizers include staff for 1st Source Bank, Saint Mary’s College, University of Notre Dame and Ignite Michiana. To a person, the organizers hope this event “will inspire women to move to their next place in life, wherever that may be. If we accomplish this as a team, we will be pleased. And ultimately, our goal is to make this a yearly event.”

If There Is A Will,
There Is A Way The Importance Of Second Chances
A
By: Amy Westbrook Pracht
sk Debie Coble what a typical day is like for her, and she may laugh little bit. After 16 months at the helm of Goodwill® Industries of Michiana, Inc., she has learned that there really is no such thing as a typical day. Whether she is scouting new retail locations or visiting the 21 retail stores she oversees, Coble stays very busy. Yet, it is her dedication to spreading the mission of Goodwill Industries that excites her the most. "I spend a lot of my time talking about what we do here at Goodwill," she said, of the organization that believes in giving people a second chance at re-building their lives. And, that is no doubt one of her favorite things to do. Last year alone, Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc., touched the lives of over 8,300 people who walked through their doors. She is very proud of that. Since she received the phone call from the board of directors offering her what might be the exclamation point on her 25-year career with Goodwill, Coble wasted no time hitting the ground running. "We are a solid organization and we had the opportunity to take a few months to think about what we want to look like in three years and beyond," she said, in describing Goodwill’s new aggressive, strategic plan. "I have an awesome staff. They are energized and excited about the future. We really took the time to look at the needs of the community.” While the Goodwill brand is a true real staple in this community with its retail stores, which is the backbone to the organization, it’s the outreach programs that are truly making a difference. "We've had this quiet presence in helping people in the community. Now, people need to know what we are doing," said Coble, who has witnessed the organization's growth over her tenure. The high energy executive began her career as a retail store manager and rose through the ranks to vice president of workforce development services before getting the call from the board to take over for retiring President and CEO Larry Neff. It's been the best job she has ever had. Goodwill's latest project in the Michiana area is one that is very close to her heart. The Excel Center, an adult high school that will open in July 2015, will give adults 18 years and older the opportunity to go back to school and earn their Core 40 high school diploma. Coble explained that there are currently no options for adults who did not earn their diploma to go back and earn one later in life. The Excel Center will allow adults the opportunity to earn a Core 40 diploma in an accelerated, tuition-free environment. "We looked at the barriers that people face when trying to get their education and child care is a huge issue," said Coble, as she explained they are duplicating a similar set up that Goodwill of Indianapolis created four years ago. "So we will provide individuals up to four hours of free child care in the facility while they take classes." The Excel Center will offer morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Another program that Coble is excited about is the expansion of the Second Chance program, which is dedicated to giving felons just that - a second chance. Already in place in St. Joseph County, Goodwill expanded this program into
This is an important program to Coble who retells a story that is close to her heart. A gentleman who had a previous record filled out a background check for a job at Goodwill. He forgot to report a felony on his application that he had received over 20 years ago. It was so long ago and he had forgotten about it. "When we did the background check it came up and he had not alerted us," said Coble. "He came to me shaking so bad and said if Goodwill won't give me a second chance, who will? We worked through it. He truly just forgot about it and it was not intentional that he left it off." Goodwill hired him. Yet, those words 'if Goodwill won't give me a second chance, who will' still ring in Coble's head in everything they do. "It's about the second chance," she said. "We practice what we preach and people need a second chance."
Photos: Amy Reinert Photography Elkhart County and will soon be expanding into LaPorte County, where people with felonies can get a second chance at improving their life through job employment. "We don't care if they had a felony on their record 20 years ago or are just walking out of prison, we have learned that people who are working are less likely to repeat their crimes," said Coble. She explained the program helps people learn the soft skills of why it is important to go to work and rethinking past behaviors that impeded their previous employment like handling conflict. Then they work on their hard skills such as job training and getting them ready to enter the workplace.
There are challenges. While the Goodwill retail stores are thriving, item donations are down. With the increase in venues like online garage sales, out-of-area drop-off boxes and consignment shops, Goodwill must compete for merchandise, which is the lifeblood of their organization. "We don't receive local government dollars, we are able to do what we do through people's merchandise donation," said Coble. "When you donate to Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul and Salvation Army, you are donating to your community." She can't emphasis how important that is. "I am so proud of the thousands of lives we have had the opportunity to change, but it is our stores that are the mechanism for that."
It is also easier than ever to donate. Goodwill offers convenient drive-thru donation locations. Their locations are intentionally located in busy retail areas. They also rely on their various donation boxes because they know people can't always donate during store hours. While the donations are critical, the shoppers are the key. All demographics have enjoyed using Goodwill stores for everyday items and treasure hunting. "We want our stores to be comfortable for everyone to shop in. You don't even feel like you are shopping in a thrift store. One of the neat things about shopping at Goodwill is you don't know if people are shopping here because they need to or because they are hunting for a treasure," said Coble, who has even snagged a few good deals for herself. One of her favorite treasures she found at a Goodwill store was her husband. It's her favorite story to tell. In 1990, she worked as a store manager and a female customer decided Coble needed a nice, young man in her life. "She gave me the names of two of them and they happened to be her sons," laughed Coble. "One of the sons called me and we went to lunch." A year later they were married and they have two children, Stephen and Laura. This year Debie and Tony Coble will celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary. "So I am proof that you can pretty much find anything at a Goodwill store," she laughed.

Do You Know How Your
Credit Score

Your credit score is determined by five different categories: Payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, new credit and credit mix. Each category is evaluated differently.
Payment History Creditcards.com states, “35 percent of the total credit score is based on a borrower’s payment history.” This is why paying your bill on time helps elevate your credit score. If by chance you miss a payment, it is a good idea to give your credit card company a call. They may waive the penalty for you if you otherwise have paid your bills on time. It may still put a ding in your credit, but at least you won’t have to pay a penalty on top of it.
Credit Utilization: According to Creditcards.com, “30 percent of the total credit score is based on a borrower’s credit utilization.” Credit utilization is how much credit you have available compared to how much credit you have used. If you have $5,000 worth of available credit but have utilized all but $4,500 of this, your credit score may be reduced. To give you a better idea of how much credit you should use, creditcards.com advises, “people with the best scores tend to average about seven percent credit utilization ration, but that 10 to 20 percent usage is okay.”
Length of Credit History: 15 determined by length of credit history. How long you have had credit available to you determines your score. When you are first starting out, you should decide on a credit card and keep that account open, since it w ill eventually help you establish a long credit history.
New Credit: 10 percent of your credit score is determined by how much of your credit is recently opened. Every time you apply for new credit, whether it is a credit card or a loan, it impacts your credit score.

Credit Mix: The last 10 percent of your credit score is determined by credit mix. Experts counsel that the ability to repay various forms of debt is an indicator of a reliable borrower because ”historical data indicates that borrowers with a good mix of revolving credit and installment loans generally represent less risk for lenders.” If you have both credit cards and a car loan this mix of credit would be a favorable factor on your credit score. One of the best ways to stay on top of your credit is to request a free report from www.annualcreditreport.com. Most people are unaware that you are allowed by law to request your credit report once every 12 months through each of the three major credit reporting companies: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian from annualcreditreport.com. Recently, some credit card companies provide your credit score for free on your statements.

Sassy Magazine’s Medical Editor, Dr. Jesse Hsieh, attended this event. “Michiana No More’s vision is to change attitudes about sexual assault and violence—that we need to take a visible stand against what is clearly wrong,” he said. “Our mission is to give victims hope, healing and justice by bringing awareness to the community there are many resources available here, in law enforcement, legal aid and mental health.” Free t-shirts, buttons and pins with the symbolic blue circle were given to the guests to bring awareness to Michiana. “Wear the symbol. The more it’s seen, the more it’ll be asked, what does that mean? That is when we can begin to drive change for invisible wounds to be spoken and to be healed, “said Dr. Hsieh. The American Heart Association in partnership with IU Health Goshen Heart & Vascular Center hosted the Rock the Red Elkhart County Luncheon, Expo and Fashion Show on Thursday, February 26 at the Lerner Crystal Ballroom. 150 guests joined together in the fight against heart disease in women at the second annual event. “The Go Red for Women movement is so critical in raising awareness and funds for lifesaving research and education programs in our communities, and IU Goshen Heart & Vascular Center was excited to work again with such a dynamic group of volunteers in making this year’s campaign a success. These events provide a place for residents to connect with a common passion in making our region healthier and free of cardiovascular diseases and to celebrate the successes we’ve made in saving women’s lives, said Dr. Abdul Basit, Interventional Cardiologist at IU Goshen Heart & Vascular Center.

The Go Red for Women event included a women’s health expo, heart-healthy lunch, doctors’ panel, and fashion show that featured designer fashions by Stephenson’s with additional styling by Bethza and Salon J. Local television and radio personalities Emily Evans from ABC-57 News and Deb Miles from B100 emceed the event. Guests also heard the heartwarming survivor story of 18 year old Caylynn Hickey, who has been battling heart disease since she was 4 years old. Shelley Rody reflected on the memory of her sister, Karen who passed away last year due to a sudden heart attack. The stories shared at the event demonstrated that heart disease can strike at any age. Caylynn’s mother, Rebecca Hickey expressed her gratitude to the room full of Go Red for Women supporters by saying, “being here today means that you all too believe in the power of a woman’s heart. The power to love, the strength to fight and the will to overcome.” The interactive panel discussion focusing on women’s heart health was led by IU Health Goshen Heart & Vascular Center physicians and also featured heart and vascular physicians, from Elkhart General Hospital, a co-sponsor of the event.

Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women's deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. In fact, more women than men die every year from heart disease and stroke. More than 275 women's lives have been saved each day since Go Red for Women began in 2004. Funds raised at the second annual event through local sponsor support and day of event donations brought in $35,000 this year, which will go towards lifesaving research, educational programs, and advocacy efforts in the region. t was definitely magical at the 2015 Make the Magic fundraising dinner on March 21st at the Hilton Garden Inn, benefitting Camp Kesem Notre Dame (CKND). The largest annual fundraiser for CKND, this year’s dinner, with more than 100 in attendance, featured Jim Higley, author, cancer survivor, parenting expert and the new Chief Development Officer of Kesem National (you might know him better from his Twitter persona, Bobblehead Dad). Nearly $20,000 was raised! CKND is a free, week-long summer camp for children affected by a parent who has cancer. Each summer camp is completely organized, planned and fundraised by the students at the University of Notre Dame. There are currently no other camps and few services available to these children in the Michiana region. The team of student leaders at CKND meet weekly throughout the year to create and plan for a funfilled week of camp. CKND 2015, August 2nd- 7th, will be held at YMCA Camp Storer in Jackson, MI and will open its arms to 80 campers, the biggest summer in its 12th year history. Camp Kesem is open to all children aged 6-16 affected by a parent with cancer regardless of race, religion, economic standing or background. The campers who attend have the unique opportunity to develop friendships with peers facing similar challenges, build confidence and gain a support network of more than 40 caring, welltrained volunteer counselors. There are only a few camp spots left. For more information, log on to http://campkesem.org/notre-dame.
