The store’s been here for 25 years, but it only became a boutique about four years ago. The store changed hands about 8 years ago and I’ve been here 15 years and in the past two years became the manager. What sets you apart from the rest? The building is fantastic; it’s 150 years old. It’s a 3,000 square foot building, brick walls, wood floor, 20-foot ceilings. The boutique is in the middle of Amish country and who would have thought the boutique would do so well, but we are doing fantastic. What motivates you in this economy? We went through transitions of figuring out who were the best costumers, but our sales are up. It’s about finding the right product for the right people and the right mix of jewelry, apparel and accessories. It’s about finding the right mix.
juicy dETAILS What are some of the most successful brands you carry? Katherine Barclay, Samuel Dong, Lavand, Miss Me, Brighton, Toms, Caribe, Tango Mango What has been a distinct turning point for your business? Bringing in apparel that wasn’t too young—more for our customers in our niche. What’s one item that every Sassy woman should have in her closet? Scarf, because it can become a piece of jewelry. What’s your favorite Sassy shoe that you carry in your store? Toms Wedge Shoe Bootie. Favorite item that you are carrying right now in your store? Paul Sisti, a South Bend artist who hand makes all of this items in his Chicago apartment. What is the price range of your clothing? $20-$350.

Your STORY I was a Manager with JCPenney for 28 years. I had always wanted to have my own business. I had the retail and marketing experience and when my daughter suggested this franchise to me, I got very excited. After I retired from JCPenney to open up the first store, my husband was laid off from his job. He joined the business with me, as well as my daughter who moved back to the area after college. We opened up the Mishawaka Once Upon a Child store in Aug. 2007. Then, 18 months later in May 2009, we opened up the second Once Upon a Child store in Goshen, which our daughter-in-law manages. Five years after opening the Mishawaka store, we knew that we needed to expand that store. We decided to also open Clothes Mentor, which is a different franchise, and put it next door to Once Upon a Child. Clothes Mentor opened in Dec. 2011. It has all worked out so well for me. It is a fun business and having my family in the business with me is more than I ever dreamed of.
What sets you apart from the rest? We pay CASH on the spot for gently used items. Customers don't have to wait until their items sell to get their money. The other thing that sets us apart from other retail businesses is our everyday low prices.
juicy dETAILS What are some of the most successful brands you carry? Ann Taylor, Chicos, Banana Republic, Talbots, Lane Bryant, Motherhood, Coach. What has been a distinct turning point for your business? Expanding the Once Upon a Child in Mishawaka and bringing Clothes Mentor to this market. It is a store that this area was in need of. What fashion designer inspires you the most? A fashion designer that inspires me the most would be Ralph Lauren. His labels have been around for years for top quality in both Women's and Kids’ clothing. As a business owner, what makes you feel SASSY? What makes me feel SASSY is when I set a goal and then reach that goal. At my first Once Upon a Child conference, the focus was on goal-setting. I wrote down my five-year sales goal for the Mishawaka store and this year (five years later) we will reach that goal. What is the price range of your clothing? Clothes Mentor - Prices range from $3.50 - $50.00.

Your STORY Fashion Advice? My best fashion advice is to learn what styles, cuts and colors look best on you but, after that, look for items you love. Never buy anything because you think you should; rather, always look for something that makes you smile but still falls within your ‘rules’ for what looks good. Fashion really is a form of self expression, so make sure what you are saying with your outfit is true to your spirit and personality.
Flourish opened in 2008 in a small location on the northwest side of town, outside of the typical retail zone. We got a great response from our loyal customers, though, and developed a ‘cult following’, so to speak. We began looking for the perfect location close to the Grape Road & Main Street commercial area, and moved the store in the spring of 2009. Since that time, we have twice expanded our store and also launched a full service website where you can shop 24/7 at www.FlourishBoutique.com. Over time, we have also added new product specialties including denim, shoes and a plus-size section.

Customer service is something we are so committed to. We know many of our customers by name and are blessed to call them friends. We love to go the extra mile and offer special services like in-house alterations, free in-store pickup for local web purchases, lay-a-way and much more. And, not to be overlooked, I think we are unique in the value we offer our customers. Our products are hand-selected, always on trend and consistently unique with boutique flair, but we are surprisingly affordable and still offer that outstanding customer service. It's rare to get the type of displays and selection Flourish offers without sacrificing customer service and affordability. It's important to us to offer clothes and accessories that people love but don't feel guilty buying.
juicy dETAILS What are some of the most successful brands you carry? Some of our customers’ favorite brands are our denim lines: Seven for All Mankind, Miss Me, NYDJ and Kut from the Cloth. We also carry Oprah and celebrity famous Spanx undergarments. Customers also love some of the brands we hand-selected including Ya, Papillon, Ryu, A'reve and Mystree. We also carry scarves and jewelry by local designers including Ali Oesch, Rejeana Crown Jewels and Saffron & Nutmeg. What has been a distinct turning point for your business? Moving our store to a prime retail location was definitely the right move and helped us take root in the community. What fashion designer inspires you the most? The feminine looks of Chanel and Dior are at the heart of our aesthetic at Flourish. But we also are inspired by modern designers such as Kate Spade and Tory Burch. As a business owner, what makes you feel SASSY? As a business owner, I feel sassy when I feel confident that my mission and business are really reaching and resonating with other women. When I walk around in the store and hear women ‘oohing and ahhing’ over things and see them smile, it builds my confidence and makes me feel genuinely happy and alive.

We’ve been around for 53 years, my grandfather started the practice in 1960 and my father took over the practice in 1986 and I joined the practice 5 years ago, so we have three generations of history. We are proud to be a family-owned business in the Michiana area. We are a full-service eye care provider, so we serve everyone from toddlers to grandparents. We do glasses and routine-eye exams to LASIX and cataract surgery, as well as offering fashion frames and designer eyewear, of course.

What motivates you in this economy? We look at everything as an opportunity to serve the families of Michiana, so we think of it as an opportunity to serve. We have a program called Kindness to Prevent Blindness, so everyone, despite his or her financial standings, has access to quality eye care.

Your STORY I moved back to the midwest after living in Los Angeles for eight years and ended up moving to South Bend to manage my store in Granger (after having a chain of four gift stores with my parents in Illinois and Indiana) because it was a nice place to raise my son. I changed it into a clothing store because of the need for a unique and upscale clothing store.

Fashion Advice? We’re doing fittings right now and what is taking every outfit to the next level is the accessory—it makes or breaks your entire outfit. Scarf, jewelry, etc. It makes a huge difference. You can’t leave a garment blank. Favorite fashion accesory? A chunky necklace. Fashion Trends for 2014? Harlem pants and skater skirts. Your STORY We opened in 2004, so this June will be our 10th anniversary. My mom was an interior designer, so I grew up with the merchandising side of her business in Chicago and I really enjoyed it. I’m passionate about fashion, so I combined the two and that’s what makes Jules work, because we have the home décor with the fashion warms up the space. The experience I learned from my mom really translates to my work now--it’s just clothes instead. I love my job.
What sets you apart from the rest? People love to come in and check out the displays and get ideas for decorating their homes. Customers will buy an entire idea or pallet and we color-coordinate and mix the clothes and the jewelry all in one space. Sometimes the customers will even buy the flowers; it stimulates people. Many people come in, but aren’t there to buy anything—they just want to look around. It’s all about the whole experience.
What motivates you in this economy? Jules started as a very high-end store, we had denim that started at $250, like Laundry and a lot of mainstream fashion lines. Our tops were over $100. All that came to a screeching halt and our sales dropped, so we switched gears and set a new price point. Our average used to be $100 per item, but now our tops are $35. Miss Me is the only name-brand jean that we carry.
juicy dETAILS What are some of the most successful brands you carry? Miss Me, Flying Monkey, Baby MudPie, along with 200 vendors who aren’t namebrand. What has been a distinct turning point for your business? Finding the little companies that make it big yet. As a business owner, what makes you feel SASSY? Seeing someone walk out of my store absolutely so happy. I love when they’re done with their fitting and they walk out and they are so excited to put it on. What fashion designer inspires you the most? I don’t have a certain designer, I use Pinterest. My taste is all over the place and that’s part of why Jules works, because it’s a mix. Using a specific designer targets a certain audience, and I love so many different looks. What’s one item that every Sassy girl should have in her closet? Anything by the NikiBiki Seamless Line. They have camis, leggings and undergarment that help your outfit so much. Every girl that tries them on loves them. Or a jegging by Flying Monkey, that’s an amazing staple. Favorite item that you are carrying right now in your store? Boot Socks. They are little socks that peep out of your boots. They make a really cute accessory. They are laid-back and help make a casual outfit work. What is the price range of your clothing? $8.75-$50.

Tiedemann Wines Making Wine an Everyday Adventure
Elizabeth Carris had her first drink of wine when she was only three years old.
process, but in the end, “Carl has the final say on it all,” says Elizabeth.
But don’t worry—her first sip wasn’t a lapse in parenting judgment, but a foreshadowing into her future as part of the dynamic father-daughter team that is Tiedemann Wines.
And you know it’s good wine by the way Elizabeth lights up just talking about her wine. “I love our Sauvignon Blanc,” gushes Elizabeth. “It’s my favorite; it has a melon flavor and it’s crisp and clean; you can taste it all the way down.”
Making wine an adventure
When Elizabeth and her father, Carl Tiedemann, decided to go into business together three years ago, they knew that they were not interested in just practicing the business of wine distribution; they wanted to be in the business of making memories. As a wholesale distributor, Elizabeth and her father hand-select the wines that they offer to their clients, including offering three of their own labels. The Tiedemann Wines company prides itself on offering wines that are “interesting, adventurous and memorable.”
“Both of our reds are 90-pointed reds, which means they have been rated by a variety of many wine critics,” she goes on. “They appeal to so many people and go well with so many foods.”
“Don’t be afraid to ask for help!” advises Elizabeth. “Ask questions if you work with other people who do the same thing that you do; it doesn’t hurt.”
Special events
And that adventurous side of Tiedemann wine begins where all good wines get their start, of course—in Napa Valley, California.
From Napa Valley to Chicago, the Tiedemann wines make their way up to Elkhart in companies and restaurants like McCarthy’s, Fat Cam’s on Garber Lake on Michigan, Belmont Beverage & Chalet Party Shop, City-Wide Liquor Stores, Uptown Kitchen and the Mark and Christianity Creek Country Club.
Signature label
Of all the work that Tiedemann does, it’s obvious that Elizabeth is especially proud of the three signature Tiedemann wines, one white and two reds, that were hand-selected and blended with Elizabeth’s father and business partner Carl, founder of Tiedemann Wines. Every season, usually in the spring and fall, Elizabeth’s dad makes the trip down to Napa Valley to sit with the winemakers and get involved on the entire process from start to finish. “He has input on the whole process,” explains Elizabeth. The winemaker and Carl work as a team to mix and come up with the taste and blending 30 | The S a ss y Little Black Book of Beauty 2013
Elizabeth believes that for women in business, the most important key to success is passion. “If you’re passionate about it, it will come. The money will come. If it’s worth your time and energy, it’s worth putting it out there,” she says. And one final word of advice from a woman who’s had to learn a lot over the past three years?
Local distribution, vintage production
Elizabeth explains that all of the Tiedemann wines are made in Napa, including their own three signature labels. The company also distributes from other Napa vineyards for the line’s Spanish wines, Chicago for some German and Argentinian wines and even a few labels from Ohio. “We have over 50 types of wine,” says Elizabeth proudly. “And because we specialize in boutique wines as a high-end market, we are able to have access to some exclusive Napa Valley wines that just aren’t distributed to anybody else.”
“I’m persistent,” says Elizabeth simply. She’s honest about the time and effort that she has put in to reach her level of success. “When I started, I went to Barnes & Nobles and bought up all the books I could about wine,” she remembers. And now, Elizabeth is dedicated to learning all she can about wine and staying abreast on the business. “I subscribe to wine blogs, wine magazines, I meet with wine makers and talk to people—I learn a lot that way,” she says. “I just pay attention.”
No snobbery here
Although Tiedemann Wines is proud of its wine and deals exclusively in the higher-end markets of wine, don’t expect any snobby airs put on here. No decanting or proper chilling or airing out necessary. “We like our wines to be able to be enjoyed right away,” states Elizabeth firmly. “We want it be enjoyed right out of the bottle and I think that we have achieved that goal.” And the secret to reaching that goal? It’s simple, Elizabeth explains:
Women in wine
Elizabeth has been in business with her father, by her count, “on and off since I was 12” she says with a slight laugh. Earning her keep in real estate in her earlier years, it wasn’t until December 2010 that she and her dad decided to make their passion of wine into a business. (Hey, happy almost bizanniversary, Elizabeth!) Starting a business from the ground-up in a new field “has had its challenges and hurdles,” admits Elizabeth. But with her bright lipstick and big smile, I think it’s safe to say that Elizabeth meets the criteria for all that makes a Sassy businesswoman.
Tiedemann Wines offers several different events to share and cultivate their knowledge and passion for great wine. “We do public wine tastings at Chalet or City Wide with our wine or ones that we specifically carry,” offers Elizabeth as one example. With a diverse collection of wines at their disposal, Tiedemann Wines also hosts themed dinners that highlight the fun varieties they offer, like French Wine Dinners or Argentina Nights. The company has also been involved in charity events, such as the Botanical Gardens and Hello, Gorgeous! Elizabeth explains that they have a special passion for educating others on wine appreciation. Tiedemann wine also shares its love of wine with some educational tools on its website, including a wine glossary, meal-wine pairing suggestions and a helpful guide for wine pronunciation. Show off some of your new knowledge and host a dinner party this fall—you’ll be the talk of the town! But what it all boils down to is that there is a very simple wisdom to the Tiedemann belief about wine. “Wine doesn’t have to be snobby!” Elizabeth comments. “Just take that first sip!” To inquire about purchasing Tiedemann Wine, call Elizabeth at 574-296-1326.
