Women’s History Month Did you know that March is National Women’s History Month? Here are a few fun facts about Women’s History Month and how it all began.

• Originally, Women’s History Month was organized by a school in California in 1978. • In 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced that the week of March 8th is considered Women’s History Week and was later petitioned to be a month. • A study requested by the White House in 2011 showed that women in the labor force has nearly equaled to men. • In 2010, studies show that women make 77% of what men earn in a year.

Heather Bachman: Sassy’s Cover Girl Cancer Warrior SASSY

Checking In With

In September of 2013, we were honored to bring

you the courageous story of Heather Bachman, a mother of two who battled an aggressive form of breast cancer called Triple-Negative. Heather opted for a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy. She credits her mother, whom battled breast cancer herself and later passed away from a difference cause, for being the guardian angel that helped her detect the cancer early enough for treatment. We will be following Heather on her journey to recovery every month here in Sassy and if you missed her story in our 2013 September issue, please visit www.MichianaSassy.com to read it.

By: Jessica Haviland

This year has been harsh to many of us who have endured the flu and common colds. For most, a cold is a pain in the rear and we think nothing else of it. For a cancer survivor, a common cold brings paranoia.

The Headache Begins

After a week of a constant headache, Heather Bachman decided to go to the doctor to battle this sinus infection she has been having. But, that long full week for her wasn’t the easiest. “I had a headache and I kept constantly thinking in the back of my head that it could be cancer but I had to calm myself and know it could just be the sinus infection,” Heather said. Unfortunately, it is common for a cured cancer patient to start seeing signs of it developing once again in a different part of their body. “Knowing this, I was scared that it was back,” she said. When I called Heather to do our interview, she was on her way home from the doctor’s office with a great amount of relief. “The doctor told me I have an Acute Sinus Infection,” she said. “I have stuffy ears which is what caused the headache. Hearing that made me feel so much better.”

Moving Forward

Heather has a big month ahead of her and she isn’t letting this sinus infection get in her way. “They (her doctors) decided that they want to do more fat graphs on my breasts,” she said. “I am hoping to get that scheduled sometime in March.” Spring has the meaning of transitioning and a beginning of a fresh new start and it’s especially no different for Heather as well. “Last year I was scared if I was even going to see the next spring,” she said. “This year I know it’s over and it’s done and I can appreciate it more and move forward.” Even though the Bachman family doesn’t have any big plans for spring break, they are all looking forward to the summer. “We usually take our vacation during the summer because of the fair,” Heather said. “With all of the animals, it’s hard to leave because no one is there to take care of them.”

One Step at a Time

After a very dramatic and scary last year, slowly bringing back everyday activities into Heather’s life is very important. “I’m going back to work full-time and now I’m juggling sports again with the kids,” she said. Last year it was rather difficult for her children to partake in any extracurricular activities due to time and funds. “My husband had to take care of them so much last year but this year I have been able to be there for my kids and take them to and from their sporting events,” she said. Even with life slowly getting back to normal for Heather, she knows that it will never be the same. “I don’t know if I could ever go back to what it was before,” she said. “I appreciate things so much more now than I ever did before and I like that.” What was normal for Heather a year ago may not be the same this year, but creating a new normalcy can have a refreshingly new start.

ith this “Polar Vortex” we have been experiencing these past months, who isn’t ready to bring a little bit of spring weather into our life.

This year’s fashion spring trends for make-up are slowly making its appearance. Gold metallic eyebrows were seen at Christian Dior’s runway show and dark blue rhinestones placed on faces at the Givenchy’s runway show may be a bit dramatic for everyday life. However, we can translate or accommodate these looks by toning it down or incorporating them into our upcoming events and style.

Denim Blue and Bright Yellow Eyes Blue and yellow eye shadows aren’t just for clowns! Blue eye shadows, when not overdone, compliments brown, hazel and grey eyes. Yellow shadows will bring the best out of every eye color.

A way to keep this look sexy and flirty is to apply either color on your top movable lid and/or on your lower lash line. This will give a touch of color to your eyes and will create some contrast with other eye shadow colors you choose (brown/gold/bronze/black).

Lips –Bold and Colorful

Tangerine, orange and apricot tones are going to be the main attention getter for your lips. From mattes to glossy textures, they are known to be the new red this season. Orange lipsticks with golden based tones will warm up your complexion and have a lighter intensity. But, if you want the effect of the bright red lip, choose a matte orange color with blue undertones. Still not sure about this trend color, then look for lip stains that have coral pink tones. To pull off this look without over doing it, use neutral to light tones for your eyes and use a light gold or bronze eye shadow to add some sparkle.

Play, experiment and have fun with your makeup! Do it on a day that you don’t have an important meeting or you know you are running late. Have makeup remover wipes handy to wipe it off if you do not like what you see and try again. Remember, it is just makeup!

Make sure you ap ply an eye shad ow primer before playing with any eye color to keep colors from mix or melting. You ing want your creatio n to last for hour s! Keep your complexio n simple and polishe d. Use your favorit foundation to even e out your complexio n. Keep your blush soft and play with very your matte bronzer to create dimensions on your cheekbones . Play with soft hu es of lip color to wa your pout. A pearl-t rm one highlighter wo uld look nice above cheekbones to bring yo ur light to your face.

Early Spring Fashion

Challenge

By: Kathy Friend

N

ew trends. For many of us, we see new looks in magazines or at the mall and think they are cute but we never try them out. Getting stuck in a style rut (or comfortable with an outdated style) is very common and very easy to remedy. Challenge yourself to try one new thing this season. Step out of your box; embrace a revved up YOU this spring! Here are some ways to challenge your style. COLOR CHALLENGE

The ‘it’ color this season is Radiant Orchid, a beautiful soft purple. A common style-rut (especially coming off such a frigid winter) is the monochromatic (i.e. all black) wardrobe. One sure way to lift your spirits, change old habits and get instant style points is to infuse this spring tone into your winter basics. Sprinkle something violet into your look with a vibrant necklace. Maybe invest now in a violet blouse or summer sweater and layer those pieces with your winter basics. Want to be daring? Violet tights and a leather skirt! Maybe you don’t look your best in this hue of purple? Try something with more punch, like Dazzling Blue! This verywearable color is an attention getting. 10 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

STATEMENT CHALLENGE

There are several trends this season that will make a big statement in your wardrobe. Like winter, statement jackets fall into this category. There are two for you to try this season; one is the boxy jacket, and the other is the bomber. The boxy jackets on the runways are in a variety of colors and fabrics. With this style, keep proportion in mind. This jacket has a “swing” unstructured nature to it, pair it with a pant or skirt that is slim and not free-flowing. An easy look to try: skinny jeans, shoe boots, tunic length t-shirt or blouse with your new statement boxy jacket. The other style is the bomber. Not the bomber of days gone by; think chic colorful bombers. This sporty look can take you from the boardroom to cocktails in an instant. Juxtaposition is key when making this style look sophisticated. The nature of this cut of jacket is casual. Pair with pieces that are tailored or have a professional feel. An easy look to try: Your favorite stilettos, those trouser pants from a suit, a basic cami and a hip satin bomber. Before you invest in this season’s statement jackets, think of at least three different ways you can wear this piece. Being stuck into wearing a statement piece one way is not a wise investment for your wardrobe. Simple considerations would be: Can I wear with jeans? Can I wear with a skirt? Is there more than one new unique way to wear this piece?

ACCESSORY CHALLENGE

Adding accessories is the one thing that will take a very basic look to one that is va-va-voom! Using accessories in the right way is the difference between wearing an outfit and having style. So many of us busy women don’t stop and think about being accessorized. This spring, I would like to challenge you to wear at least nine things every day that you can consider an accessory. These could be: • Necklace – try wearing more than one! • Rings – do you wear a right hand ring? • Bracelets – try layering some bangles with charm styles • Eye glasses • Bold pattern in your outfit • Unexpected shoe – maybe your leopard kitten heels are your new neutral shoe you wear with everything? Spring is a time to renew and a time to be done with the old and welcome change. Take just a little time this spring to focus on you!

When GOOD Wine

Goes

By: Elizabeth Carris

I

t’s been a long day at work or with the kiddo’s and you’ve either stopped at the liquor store on the way home or had the hubby pick up a bottle or two for you to open, relax and enjoy. You have the bottle in your hand and begin to open it and pop the cork and pour into your favorite glass. Your feet are up and you are bringing the glass to your nose to take a lovely sniff of the wine and all of a sudden your face tightens up and your eyes squint and you realize the wine smells awful.

Do you know why?

Here is the top “need to know” of wine gone bad:

1.

Next, check for signs of corked wine. When wine is bottled, the natural cork can sometimes get wet and the cork can become moldy. That mold can then go into the wine itself when the cork is placed in the bottle causing the wine to develop a cardboard or musty smell. It may actually smell like cork itself. The wine will taste fruitless and uninteresting or what people call “flat.”

2.

Smell the wine to see if it’s been oxidized or if air has gotten into the wine. Open bottles of wine that have been stored improperly can become oxidized or if the cork has become loose and air had leaked in and it can become oxidized and will have a very pungent smell like vinegar or will take on a sherry like color and smell.

12 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

3.

Again smell the wine to see if it has sulfur like smell. The scent of rotten eggs or matchsticks or burnt rubber is nota a good thing. That means too much sulfur dioxide was added during the bottling process or it can be caused from improper storage.

4.

Also check to see if the wine has been cooked. Cooked wine is caused from wine getting too warm or hot. Again, improper storage is usually the cause for this. Like storing your wine in a hot car in the trunk or near the stove or in an attic or wine that has sat around in a sweltering loading bay for too long. The best way to detect if it’s been cooked is to run your finger across the top of the cork and if the cork is raised at all, like it’s been pushed upwards out of the bottle, it’s been cooked. The cork can look like it’s been leaking also which is a good indicator or cooked wine. And if you pour the wine into a glass and it has a brown tint to it, it’s most likely been cooked. Cooked wine will often smell caramelized too.

5.

Sometimes crystals will form on the underside of the cork; all though not a sign of bad wine and the crystals or free standing sediment will not hurt you and they are not a fault to the wine it often raises concern. It’s from the wine maker’s decision not to cold stabilize the wine and then remove them so they often form later. Nothing to be concerned about but I wouldn’t recommend licking the cork!

Now that you know the bad wine basics, you can rest assured the next bottle you open you will be able to detect the culprit of what made it bad and move on to a lovely bottle of good wine and get back to relaxing.

Cheers! SASSY | MARCH 2014

Taking Our Stand…In The Stands Female Fans Change the Face of Sports

I

didn’t realize being a female sports fan was a “trend,” but maybe that’s because my college roommate was an avid sports fan from the south side of Chicago. She knew the rules, the history and the lineup of the Notre Dame Football team and the Chicago White Sox. She wore the right apparel and she taught me tailgating rituals and complex student-section cheering choreography. At the time, I assumed that I was the odd woman out, one of the few who didn’t know the rules of the game.

I had no idea that to be an avid sports fan was a man’s prerogative, so I was confused when I saw Jori McMurtrey’s 2012 article in the New York Times declaring, “Watch out boys -- there's a new type of girl infiltrating your local sports pubs and athletic venues, and she wants to be taken seriously…She watches SportsCenter before the newest weekly episode of The Bachelorette… She's me.” “What’s the big deal?” I thought. She’s a sports fan; why is her gender relevant? I’m not sure if the fuss is the result of female fans not openly staking their claim to the well-tended stadium grass until recently, or if it’s just taken merchandisers, sports clubs and the media this long to notice. In any event, the playing field is being leveled, especially here in South Bend.

Silver Hawks Set the Bar High:

Coveleski Stadium is an appealing destination for a diversity of women: those who want to cheer on the home team, want a family day and those who need a night out with friends. Kelly Knutson, the Silver Hawks’ director of marketing and promotions, explains that “the park is full of fun for all ages. We have the Applebee’s Fun Zone and the splash pad that is specifically for children, so moms can feel good about coming to watch a game and having entertainment for the kids. For the mom who is busy and wants to get out during the week but can’t fit in a meal and a family outing, Wednesdays are Kids Eat Free when we have a home game on a Wednesday.” A good game, free food and no noise restrictions – what more could we want?

Women have long been a part Coveleski’s past, and they are also part of its future. Despite three rained-out games last year, the stadium has seen a 20 percent increase in attendance, selling out a remarkable five times in just the first half of the season. When you consider that women comprise 30-45 percent of major American sports’ fan bases, according to McMurtrey, a great percentage of this increase must be due to women’s support. That support is recognized by the merchandisers as well as the stadium’s event coordinators. Brandy Beehler, the retail and merchandise manager at the stadium notes that an entire, designated section of the team store is dedicated to a variety of Silver Hawks and Major League Baseball apparel for women.

Our Ladies of Notre Dame:

The history of female sports fans at the University of Notre Dame is also complex. Even before the school went co-ed in the 1970s, women supported it and its athletes. Between Saint Mary’s College and Holy Cross College, Notre Dame was the school with the most extensive athletic facilities. So, generations of students at all three schools grew up learning the fight song in their cradles.

“Women like sports. Women understand sports. And women are becoming increasingly important to the bottom line.”

As for having a night when we can just leave the kids, pets and/or partners at home -- Coveleski hosts Barefoot Wine Tastings that have a primarily female audience. Plus, the occasional Thirsty Thursday game features dollar soda and beer all night.

Events during the year also directly reference women, such as the Mother’s Day Lunch. Plus, Coveleski hosts the fundraiser Pink at the Cove, the proceeds of which benefit Memorial Breast Care Center. On July 2 they honored Betsy Jochum, a member of the original 1943 South Bend Blue Sox baseball team, one of the first four teams created as part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She was recognized on the field and threw out the first pitch. Presented by The Center for History and the Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame, the event acknowledged her exceptional athletic legacy: winner of the League batting crown in 1948 with a lifetime batting average of .246, she was also a notable outfielder and pitcher. Her name is inscribed on plaques in Coveleski alongside her those of her teammates: Jean Faut, Elizabeth Mahon and Lou Arnold. 14 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

And the football players make an annual tradition of receiving a blessing from the Sisters of the Holy Cross at Saint Mary’s College. In fact, the most exciting ND game I ever watched was with the Sisters in their convent; one of them had to leave at halftime because her cardiologist disallowed her from watching a game if it was too exciting and overly accelerated her heart rate.

Plus, there are those who grew up near the stadium. Sally Sorberg, who counts her time working on the campus in the number of football seasons she’s completed (22), explains that “I grew up around ND fans, around the campus; I used to live less than half a mile away from it. Being a fan is something I was born with.” Sorberg now directs order management systems for the Hammes Bookstore. Before that, she ran the Varsity Shops in the Joyce Center, which is how I knew her. While an undergraduate at Saint Mary’s, I worked nearly every football game as one of Sorberg’s cashiers. I saw the lifelong fans, the tiny infants in jerseys and the women of all ages and backgrounds stop by the shops to buy merchandise for themselves and their families. “When I first started at Notre Dame,” reflects Sorberg, “I felt that the female fans came just to go to the game, socialize and be seen by their friends but now they are fully informed fans. They are active participants in the game.”

Their attire has changed as well. Before, female fans had something of a uniform. It often involved blue, wool, v-neck sweater, a white turtleneck with ND embroidered on the collar and plaid pants. Now, the women have as many, more seasonally appropriate options as the men. There are jerseys in women’s sizes, athletic wear and a greater variety of fabrics and styles. Women can now be comfortable and casual fans. “I think the products have changed because the buyers have seen the way the women have embraced football, as a sport, as part of their lives – it’s something the women enjoy,” explains Sorberg. “Merchandisers realized there was a market for the sporting side, the football side of it. Now they make more athletic, casual, women’s fit items – it’s very distinctive.” And the University offers an experience like no other to its fans of either gender. Often, a weekend features multiple sporting events, golf facilities are available and the campus has religious, historical and architectural sites of interest open to the public. “Notre Dame is such a great place to visit; there are so many things around here to see and places to stay. Any football weekend is quite an event,” says Sorberg, who has given numerous visiting fans advice on where to go and what to see. “Women are coming here for more than football; they are enjoying the whole atmosphere of a sports weekend at ND.”

The Goal Line:

In a recent editorial for Forbes Magazine, Teresa Genaro balanced her frustration with other professional sports venues that are unaccommodating to women, even with all the evidence that shows how important women are to their fan base. “I’m a 40-something woman with reasonable amounts of leisure time and disposable income, both of which I like to spend at sporting events, from tennis matches to hockey games to horse races. I attend them not because of what I can wear or what trinket I might take home or what charity I can support but because of what happens on the court or the ice or the track. There are plenty of others like me out there.” There are plenty of others like Genero. Despite the stereotypes about female sports fans and why they care – just to get a man, just to admire athletes’ physiques, etc. – the fact remains: women like sports. Women understand sports. And women are becoming increasingly important to the bottom line of sports franchises. The next logical step in the argument is that women will come to support women’s sports, a step that has yet to be made definitively (as clear by the lackluster attendance at WNBA games). In spite of this, consider the support Betsy Jochum’s Blue Sox received in their day. The hope is that we won’t need another world war to bring in fans to female sporting events, especially as women are taking their stand in the stands more and more every day.

Easy Switches for a More

Sustainable Living By: Meagan Church

W

e all know we should live more sustainably but what exactly does that mean? And how much work is involved in it? As a woman on the go, you want to be able to live more green and help the environment but finding ways to do that without adding another thing to the to-do list isn’t always easy. That’s why we offer 15 tips that can get you started on living a more sustainable and earth-friendly life that don’t require a lot of time and effort. Some of the switches are easy ones. Others may take a bit more getting used to (such as the showering suggestion), but we’ve only been given one Earth, so let’s take care of it.

Ditch the bottled water.

Did you know that bottled water can come from city water supplies and be no cleaner than what comes out of your tap already? So, don’t add to the ever-looming pile of plastic bottles that are littering landfills. Instead, switch to filtered tap water.

Bring your own cup.

When you head to your favorite café, take your favorite travel mug with you. Most places are more than happy to place your order in your own mug instead of dirtying theirs.

Buy locally.

Connect with local farmers and growers for your produce, meat and dairy needs. Buying things closer to home reduces carbon emissions caused by transportation. It also helps the local economy by keeping those dollars in our area. Plus, when you meet the person who grew or raised your food, you can ask questions and learn more about what is going onto your plate and inside your body.

Shop the thrift shop.

Buying second-hand has a variety of benefits, including saving money and resources. And if you choose a thrift store with a good cause (Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, etc.), you’re giving your money to a worthy organization. You can often find cute, fashionable second-hand items that still have a lot of life left in them.

Switch to reusable grocery bags.

Plastic bags litter landfills and landscapes, harming the environment and wildlife. So, keep them out of commission by carrying reusable bags with you.

Buy organic.

Choosing organic isn’t so much about improving nutrition, since an organic apple has the same nutritional value as a conventionally grown one. But, what organic does save you is exposure to harmful pesticides and chemicals. Plus, it reduces exposure to those harmful chemicals for the people who live where the food is grown and it saves their water supply from contamination.

Start a garden.

A garden doesn’t have to be a large, time-consuming project. Start small with a few containers of tomatoes, lettuce and herbs. Anything you grow on your own reduces your carbon footprint, so even starting small is a step in the right direction. 16 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

Go meatless for a day.

Eating like a vegetarian for just one day reduces your carbon footprint by saving on greenhouse gas emissions that are emitted in the production and transportation of meat. Water usage is also minimized since an estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into producing a single pound of beef. And, it also gives you health benefits by helping to reduce your heart disease, cancer and diabetes rates.

Take a hike.

You know that gym membership that you aren’t using? Well, there’s an easier and cheaper way to burn a few calories. Walk and ride your bike more often. Whenever possible, walk or bike for errands and even to work to save on fuel and perhaps even shed a few pounds.

Borrow instead of buying.

You know those items like a wheelbarrow that come in handy about once a year? Why buy your own when your neighbor has one taking up space in his garage? Plus, when you borrow from your neighbor, it gives you a great opportunity to strike up a conversation and maybe even a friendship.

Make your own cleaning products.

Forget about expensive, brand name cleaning solutions. Most things can be cleaned with baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and the like. Using these items doesn't take any extra time but they will save you money and exposure to harmful chemicals.

Before they say

“I Do”

let’s raise a glass or two!

Celebrate the night before the “big day” with your rehearsal dinner at Antonio’s Italian Ristorante.  Award-winning Authentic Italian dishes served buffet style or plated  Rich, beautiful room and table settings  Full-service bar with an extensive selection of wines, spirits and champagnes

Take fewer showers.

Unless you had an especially hard and sweaty workout, showering daily isn’t absolutely necessary. Even cutting out just one 10-minute shower a week could save between 25 and 100 gallons of water each week.

BOOK NOW! 574.295.8424 1105 Goshen Ave. Elkhart, IN 46516

Tues-Thurs, 4:00pm – 9:00pm Fri-Sat, 4:00pm – 10:00pm Sun, 4:00pm – 9:00pm

Toss the paper towels.

Spills happen, but instead of reaching for a disposable paper towel, grab a cloth. Keep old towels, washcloths and even cloth diapers handy to use instead of paper towels. For mealtime, make the switch to cloth napkins. They not only save on waste, but they also feel better than paper.

Cloth diapers.

Trust me; it’s not as scary as it seems. It can take up to 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose, plus each diaper puts human waste into the landfills, which can then leach into the ground water. Cloth diapering doesn’t take much more effort than using disposables (less so when you consider you don’t have to run to the store for another package), and they save a few thousand dollars over the diapering years of a child. If you’re not sure about laundering them yourself (which really isn’t a big deal either) then seek out a local cloth diaper service that will handle the laundering for you.

Mow less often.

Who wants to spend their summer mowing anyway? The truth is that keeping grass taller helps improve water retention by shading the soil and it can also block weed growth, so save some fuel by mowing less often. When you do mow, leave the lawn clippings on the grass. As they decompose, they provide vital nutrients for the soil.

Five Foods That Will

Cleanse Your Body By: Ashley Johns

Detoxification is a method of nourishing, resting and cleansing your body from the

inside out. Our bodies are continuously working to digest the food we eat, eliminate daily waste and rid off toxins. Our environment, stress levels and what we eat and drink all attribute to the toxins in our bodies and it is important to know that there are actions you can take to enhance your body's natural ability to detox, starting with what you eat and drink. There are many foods that attribute to the natural cleansing process in your body but the five listed below have immediate on your body, while and after eating them. If you begin to listen to your body after eating, you will learn to be very perceptive as to how different foods affect your body and even mental state. There are foods that depress you and make you tired, foods that give you a short term energy kick coupled with a hard crash and then there are foods that renew you. Next time you eat, really listen to what is going on and by doing so, you will be your body's natural barometer for healthy, cleansing foods.

Water

Water is listed amongst the foods because it is what our bodies need most and because of this, it is important I include it. In addition to making up 60% of our body, water plays many important roles in our body including: regulate body temperature, protects organs, lubricates joints, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and naturally cleanses the body by flushing waste. Without it for two to three days, we would not survive. We can survive for up to three weeks without food. Work your way up to drinking at least 8 glasses (64 ounces) of water a day. For every cup of coffee you have, have an equal glass of water. Target has ½ and 1 gallon containers that have a spicket for easy pouring and a handle so you can carry it with you to work to ensure you are drinking enough water each day.

Lemons

This citrus fruit packs a punch of vitamin C, boosting your immune system and assisting your liver in the flushing of toxins. Squeezing fresh lemon juice into hot water is a natural medicine to your body. Do this each morning upon waking and each evening while winding your body down. Use fresh squeezed lemon to get the true benefits of lemon.

Fruit

High in liquid, antioxidants, nutrients, fiber and vitamins, fruit acts as a flushing mechanism. Providing more fiber in your diet helps your body to properly eliminate waste. Eat fruit with your morning oatmeal or as a snack during the day to keep your metabolism active and your fiber count high. Make a fruit & spinach smoothie: in a blender, add ½ cup blueberries, ½ cup strawberries, a handful of spinach, a cup of real cranberry juice, some ice and blend. A natural, detoxifying snack that will make you feel renewed and give you a natural boost of energy!

1.10 minute cardio segment of your choice.

Here are my recommendations; A brisk walk around your block, Walking up and down stairs, jog, dance, roller blade, jump rope, or pick 3 cardio dance routines from my YouTube Channel. The first 3 songs from the playlist will help motivate you to move! Make sure you break a sweat.

2.5 sets of 10 Push Ups with a 10 sec.

rest in between sets. To modify, try putting your knees on the floor, or doing a push up against the wall.

Instructions: Keeping good form, bottom below shoulders and head lifted, bend and straighten at the elbow. Keep tummy lifted throughout. This is old school, but effective in toning the entire body.

3.3 sets of 10 “Hip Dips” in Elbow Side

Plank. Take a 5-10 second rest between sets. To modify, place the knee closest to the ground on the floor. Instructions: Lower the hip down to touch the floor and then lift up. Keep your bottom squeezed really tight. Do all of the reps on one side, and then do the other. This really tones the “muffin top” area.

4.5 sets of 10-20 Tricep dips

with a 10 second rest in between. To modify, find a bench, chair, or any stable surface for your hands. The higher off the ground your hands are, the more accessible the exercise. Instructions: Keeping your neck long and your shoulders down, bend at the elbow joint. Emphasize the “bend” part of the exercise and your triceps will be sculpted in no time. Hint: Keep your hips close to your hands to perform the movement effectively.

TIP:

5.3 sets of 15 Chest Lifts,

After each work out on your mat, it’s always best to clean it off. Mix four drops

of dish soap to two cups of water in a spray bottle. Then, rinse with plain water and air dry!

(abdominal crunches), each set getting more challenging due to the position of the legs. 5 to 10 second rests between sets. Work up to 3 rounds of the series. To modify, keep feet on the ground throughout sets or stay in Starting Position. Instructions: Keep your lower back touching the floor at all times, lift the chest about 2 inches up toward the ceiling and then lower 2 inches. Your head and shoulders remain lifted throughout the exercise. Keep your neck long by making sure there is an apple size space between your chin and chest. Shoulders stay down away from your ears.

6.Dancing Warrior Series.

Do the series of poses 10 times on each side. Stay in each individual position for 1 breath set. (1 Breath Set = 1 inhale + 1 exhale) This is an empowering way to end your workout. Instructions: Legs stay in the same position throughout series, upper body moves side to side at the waist from position to position. Go through the series 10 times with the right leg bent, and then switch to the other side and repeat.

5 Signs That Your Home Isn’t Working For You

W

e all have our own ideas of the perfect home but having the time and money to create this ideal home can be challenging. Instead of giving in to the idea that it will never happen, take a look at how your home is working for you now. Chances are you’ll find a few easy ways to improve the function of your home and, as a result, you’ll lower the stress level of your everyday life. Here are five signs that your home may not be working for your lifestyle.

Clutter Accumulates:

We all have those days where we get home, drop everything at the back door, put the mail in a pile on the dining table and barely get something to eat before it’s time to go to bed. But when days of clutter turn into weeks and sometimes months, it’s time to reevaluate. Rather than immediately tackling your designated clutter spots, evaluate other rooms in your home. Chances are you will find items that you haven’t used in quite some time that you can either sell or donate to a local charity, therefore, creating valuate storage space where you can stash all of the clutter that’s been laying out in the open. It’s important to make space for things that you love. Make shelves to put around your home or buy additional cabinets for storage.

You Can’t Ever Find Anything: It’s been a hectic morning and you’re already running late. You rush out the door and realize that you don’t have your car keys. You stop and try to remember where you put them last night when you got home. By the back door? In another coat pocket? On the kitchen counter? If this scenario sounds all too familiar, it’s probably time to create designated “landing spots” for items you need on a daily basis. Hang keys on a hook by the back door every time you get home. Create a filing system for mail so that each day you are not just piling it up on the counter. Delegate one drawer for stamps, scissors, tape and pens. By eliminating the search, you’ll be creating more time for important things. After all, time is the most valuable thing we have. Why waste it looking for things that could easily be assigned a home of their own?

“Time is the most valuable thing we have. Why waste it looking for things that could easily be assigned a home of their own?” 22 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

You Never Invite People Over:

You don’t have to host a dinner party for twelve or be the “hang out” house for all of your kids’ friends. However, if you never invite friends and extended family over to your house, it could be because of how your home functions or looks. Perhaps you’re embarrassed by a few outdated pieces of furniture or you don’t have enough seating for everyone to be comfortable. Don’t worry about doing a complete overhaul or making everything perfect before having guests over. The truth is, relationships are more important than having a brand new sofa and why shouldn’t you feel free to entertain people you love at your own home? Think about ways to add more seating. Why not swap out your coffee table for a large ottoman that can double as extra seating? Slide a couple of stools under a console table so you can put them to use when friends come over. Commit to saving up for one new piece of furniture (perhaps something with storage such as a bureau that can hide clutter) and celebrate by throwing a little party when you’re able to purchase that one special piece. Remember, life should be lived to its fullest each and every day, not when every house project is complete.

DIRECT RUG IMPORTS You Don’t Use Certain Rooms:

Do you have a home office but constantly find yourself dragging your lap top and paperwork into the living room to work? Why not rearrange your living room to accommodate a desk and free up the home office to use as a second bedroom or even a dressing room? If you find yourself avoiding certain rooms of your house, it could be because these rooms aren’t serving a purpose in your daily life. Remember just because a room is labeled as “the formal living room” doesn’t mean you have to treat it as such. It’s your home so make each room work for you!

You Don’t Feel Relaxed When You Get Home:

Having a happy home is like being in a happy relationship. You may have days where the house is messy or you wish that you had a walk-in closet but overall you should be comfortable and happy in your home every day. If the idea of coming home stresses you out, it’s important to look at why. Is it time to sort through your belongings and simplify? Is it time to finally paint that wall a fun and exciting color? Think about what you can do to create a warm atmosphere for you and your family and then do it!

Sprinkle Your Electronic Communication/Relationships with a Personal Touch By: Pam Gunterman

W

ith the January release of the Spike Jonze film Her staring Joaquin Phoenix about the relationship between a writer and his new “meet all your needs” computer, I believe it may be time to revisit what constitutes communication and a personal connection.

Webster’s Dictionary defines communication as an act or instance of transmitting or conveying information and/or a verbal or written message. Using that definition, the widely used electronic forms of communication we use today seem to fit that bill. Technology can be a blessing and a curse. I do enjoy “seeing” and catching up with my family and friends in various locals via Facebook, Twitter and other social media. And, I must admit, I am more on top of the comings and goings of folks because of this option. But with every gain there is a corresponding loss. It is rare if not impossible to go anywhere these days that you will not see folks checking their email, talking, texting or surfing the web on their smartphones. It seems that the art of idle conversation with strangers while you wait in line or at an event has been lost along with that personal connection. With this new higher level of keeping in touch does come with some pretty scary stuff. We now have cyber bullies, who rather than beat up people for their lunch money, attack them with vicious words online. They attack not the physical body of the person but cut them to the core with a constant barrage of defeating words hoping to beat them down and break their spirit. It appears that people in general, bullies or not, find it much easier to type a mean or nasty email or text which delivers a much harsher message than they would ever dare deliver in person when all they have to do is hit send. For all the good the electronic age has brought, it has also taken something from all of us. It has taken humanness out of the equation. As humans, we usually think twice about saying or doing something when we have to face the people involved. Emails and texting allows us to hide our faces so we act rather than think. If you look further down the list of definitions of communication in the Webster’s Dictionary, you will come to definition number four, which states that communication is a personal rapport. When holding up the electronic, means or forms of communication to this standard falls short of satisfying the definition. It is at times hard to “read” the tone of an email or text as they come without expression, tone of voice or body language. Stark words without inflection can be misinterpreted. Like all good things - fine food, fine wine and fine chocolate, we should consume electronic communication in moderation. In order to appreciate the finer things, we must remember to appreciate all other things as they each play a part in communicating who we are to each other.

It is always good to keep in touch with friends and family but it is most touching to make an in person connection. 24 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

What Not to

Forget:

7 Things You Should Put In Your Suitcase Now! By: Michelle L. Shirk, J.D.

E

verybody loves vacation but practically no one loves packing. As an advocate of traveling light, I try to avoid loading my suitcase with everything but the kitchen sink. After all, most destinations have stores and many hotels will even assist guests in correcting a packing mistake by providing a free toothbrush or comb if needed.

With that said, some necessities can be tricky to find on the road while others tend to be priced at a premium. To save time and aggravation, put the following seven items on the “high priority” portion of your spring break packing list and be sure to keep them accessible during sightseeing adventures throughout your trip.

1. Batteries:

Batteries in the most popular sizes can be found in the gift shops of virtually all major tourist attractions. Unfortunately, these retailers typically sell them in stingy two or four-packs at marked-up prices. If your digital camera sucks down AA’s, plan ahead and pick up a jumbo pack before leaving home.

2. Over-the-Counter Medications: In the likely event that your vacation involves driving, flying, sun, roller coasters, large meals or irregular schedules, someone will probably end up with a headache or upset stomach at some point. You could try to find a nearby drug store but why devote vacation time to doing so when you could just preemptively toss a couple of Tylenol in your purse? It goes without saying that you should also bring along any necessary prescription medications in your carry on. 3. Diapers and Wipes, if Applicable: If you’re traveling with babies or toddlers, be sure to pack more than you think you need. While you will almost certainly be able to find some type of baby supplies wherever you travel, an unfamiliar destination is not the place to experiment with a new brand or style of diapers. If suitcase space is at a premium, explore the possibility of purchasing these items online and have them shipped to your destination before your arrival.

4. Rain Ponchos: When you plan to tour rain or shine, buy some cheap ponchos before you leave home and keep them with you at all times. Keep in mind that accidentally forgetting your ponchos at your hotel pretty much guarantees it will rain that day! 26 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

5. Cold Weather Clothing: We’re used to cold weather here in Michiana – that’s why we take vacations to escape it! However, keep in mind that even traditionally warm destinations like Florida and Southern California occasionally receive cool weather. Keep an eye on the weather forecast before your trip and save yourself the trouble of a Target run by throwing in a couple of pairs of gloves and a hat in your suitcase if there is any possibility you may need them.

6. Sunscreen: It may be tempting to wait and buy sunscreen at your destination to save packing space. Unfortunately, I recently tried this maneuver and ended up paying around $14.00 at a hotel gift shop when I could have bought a similar bottle for $7.00 or $8.00 at home. Lesson learned.

Come see our fabulous lines: Visit our Showroom at 1229 East University Drive, Granger, IN 46530 Phone 574-243-7601 Fax 574-243-7603 www.chriskramerinteriors.com

7. Power Cords/Chargers: Even if you are traveling purely for leisure, you’ll probably take along at least a couple of electronic devices on the road. Don’t go to the trouble of packing your cell phone, E-Reader, laptop, portable DVD player or iPod only to find it powerless and useless upon your arrival. Take a minute now to round up and pack up any necessary cords and chargers and avoid frustration later.

Having these seven things on hand will help you avoid blowing your vacation budget on boring necessities. That means more money for delicious local meals, souvenirs and admission fees. Have a great trip!

Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to break out and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY business coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!

Q:

:I’m the CEO of my own real estate development company. Business has been sluggish for the past few years, and things are just now starting to pick up. There is a very big deal on the table which would really help our business. The problem is that I don’t really trust the people on the other side of the deal. In order to support the financial health of my business, we really need a big deal like this. My head tells me to move forward, while my heart is not so sure.

If your heart is not resonant with your head - you must explore why. Ask questions. State your concerns. Trust building happens over time. Slow everything down until you’ve done due diligence to the relationship. If the deal you’re attempting to strike is beneficial for both sides, slowing down won’t stop it from happening. Business leaders who understand the head/heart connection build powerful relationships with clients, employees, and other business partnerships. It’s the foundation for creating satisfying work that, by the way, serves everyone involved.

Charrise Says:

You’re right to check in with both your heart and your head when choosing to work with others who can have a significant impact on your business. Entering a deal where trust on both sides has been established greatly increases the odds of the deal working. The best partnerships begin by creating a transparent relationship where the important things are communicated. Too often, people miss this very important foundation for doing business. If trust isn’t there, it’s likely that you will be disappointed.

Q:

This is going to sound petty. I work in an office with lots of women, who I get along with mostly. What’s really bugging me is the shape they leave the bathroom in after using it. It’s not unusual to find tissue on the floor, coffee grounds in the sink and standing water all around the sinks. I won’t even go into some of the other less than desirable conditions I sometimes encounter there. I just want to use the facilities without being grossed out. How can I maintain my good friendships while ratting out the messy bathroom culprits?

Charrise Says:

We carry a large selection of new and consigned clothing and accessories!

Ah yes. This is bound to happen from time to time when lots of people use the same intimate space. The best way to deal with is to - well, deal with it. Get the ladies who use that facility together and open a discussion about what’s ok and what’s not ok. Take the lead in communicating what is certainly on the mind of many other co-workers. Avoiding it will not work. Annoyances rarely dissolve on their own. In order to have a cohesive, stress free work environment, communication is key. There must be an established agreement that has some built in accountability. That means calling poor hygiene out when you see it, in the moment. It might also mean a commitment from everyone to wipe the sink after they use it. You can determine as a group what is acceptable.

Your $25 gift to the St. Vincent de Paul Society could heat a home for an entire week. $25 might not mean much to you, but it’s everything to them.

It’s a fact that some people are messy. Some people are less respectful of other’s space. Some people simply don’t notice things. We’re all different, and yet there is always a way to create a community space that works for everyone. Your work space is critical to creativity, productivity, morale and general happiness at work. You get to take responsibility for making the changes necessary to make it a nurturing space, even if it means ruffling some feathers.

Mary Davis:

First Female Attorney

in Elkhart By: Kristin Baker

“I can’t say I was always a leader; I just tended to do my own thing.” Despite her small stature and soft spoken nature, many would not guess that sweet little Mary Davis (65) was the first female Attorney in Elkhart and was often known for her “big mouth” in the courtroom. “I was strong willed and very competitive. I had three brothers so I was used to competing with guys.” Mary grew up in the Martinsville area in a lower middle class family. Tragically, her mother passed away when she was only 14. “She was a great mom, very smart, and has remained my mentor. I think if she had lived 25 years later, she would’ve been in a profession as well.” Mary attended Indiana University where she met her husband of 46 years, Rick. “He was a senior and had a car. I was smitten. After a whirlwind courtship, we got engaged just seven weeks after we started dating and married that fall just before he started law school and I finished my undergrad.” Another sign that Mary “just tended to do [her] own thing.” Mary soon discovered that social work was not for her. “It just seemed to preserve the status quo, and I was much more goal oriented. I started thinking maybe law school would be a good match for me. I took the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) and did very well. When Rick was in law school, there were only three women in his class but when I started the next year, we had about 12-14, which made up about 10%. Nowadays, it’s almost 50/50. It’s a good area for women to go into. In a job interview early in his career, they asked Rick if he had any skeletons in his closet. He joked and said he wasn’t sure he should call me a skeleton but that his wife was in her final year of law school.” Mary passed the Bar exam in 1974, and was later on the Board of Law Examiners (people who write & grade bar exams) for 17 years. When she was appointed in 1983 by justice of Indiana Supreme Court, she was the only woman on a Board of 10. Mary shared that some of the challenges were more about age than gender in her younger years. She remembers when one of her early clients remarked “Oh my gosh, she looks like a child!”

“Professional women need to support each other instead of compete. Women feel strength in numbers.”

Mary always tells young women just starting out in their careers that it’s not as complicated as you might think. “Just find something you love and do your best at it. Don’t spend your life doing something you hate. All that’ll do is give you an ulcer!” She smiles and continues.” Professional women need to support each other instead of compete. Women feel strength in numbers.”

30 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

It became obvious to her colleagues early on that Mary was a standout in her field. “One day I was at court, and one of the clerks said ‘Your husband said you do the entire firm's trial work.’ I agreed, because I did. Then she said ‘And you know why he said that you do?’ I replied, ‘Sure, because I have a big mouth!’ I think she thought she was going to get Rick in trouble, so she said ‘Have you heard this story?’ And I said ‘No, I just really do have a big mouth.’” After working together at a firm of five attorneys, Rick and Mary decided to start their own firm as a couple, which they continued until they retired in 2010. Despite their demanding careers, Rick and Mary were always intentional about their relationship outside of work, embracing life as an adventurous partnership. During warm weather seasons, you might spot the two lovebirds on their tandem bike. They’ve ridden over 50, 000 miles together with Rick in the front as the “captain” and Mary behind him as the “stoker.” In a recent article on Tandem biking, Sheldon Brown remarks “Other names for the rear rider include ‘navigator’, ‘tailgunner’ and ‘rear admiral’…The rear rider is not a "passenger", but is an equal participant. I can’t help but think what a fitting description this is for Mary. Since retiring in 2010, they continue to plan their next adventures together. This spring they’ll be taking a trip along the

Mississippi river where they bike about 40 miles a day along the river, then sleep at night on a riverboat. “As an attorney, I did several divorce cases. I knew what that looked like and it wasn’t pretty. I’ve been married 46 years. My husband is my best friend. At the base of everything, friendship and relationships are what’s most important. If you have to choose between relationship and task, choose the relationship every time.” In today’s culture, we are told to do whatever it takes to be successful, to keep trying harder, working later, pushing further. But maybe the true definition of leadership is simply “doing our own thing”…about knowing when to be first, and when to take the back seat, while always putting relationships above tasks. Mary paved the way and maybe it’s time for us to learn to just pedal together, enjoy the scenery and be grateful for how far we’ve come.

he question at hand addresses financial decisions at mid-life. But when is that? With people marrying later and having children later, it isn’t a particular age; it is a stage of life. I divide the stages of life into four parts. Living at home with parents. Living on your own with a mate and perhaps children. Children have left the nest and you are still working. Finally retired and hopefully enjoying the good life. Thus my comments assume the children are leaving.

Before one takes off and chases investment opportunities, one needs to assess their financial position. The first step would be to prepare a personal balance sheet. List all your assets – cash, investments, retirement plans, real estate etc. and then your liabilities – mortgages, vehicle loans, student loans. Assess your net equity position (assets minus liabilities); this is your net worth. This is your financial foundation. If this number is low, then you first need to retire some debt, not risk your assets in investment opportunities. Secondly, one should prepare a source and use of funds. Where does your income come from – salaries, investments etc. and more importantly where does it go – mortgage payments, living expenses, discretionary spending etc. I divide the spending into four categories – necessary, nice but not necessary, totally discretionary and saving. The first test, is anything in the saving category? If not, 32 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

This Month's Question: “I’m starting a new job where a number of my employees will be considerably older than me and I’m worried that they won’t respect me as their manager. How can I ensure that I start off on the right foot?”

you need to start here and determine how much of your income you need to save in order to meet your goal. The second test is, are you spending more than you are making and where is it going. If it is in the necessary category –utilities, rent and food, you are in trouble. If it is in the discretionary category such as a vacation, it is a suggestion to rethink how you vacation and is there a more economical way to go. This exercise is usually quite revealing as to whether you r financial house is in order or not. The third test is, have you determined your financial goals for retirement and are you on a realistic path to achieving them. Are you regularly saving money? Are you retiring your debt and not acquiring any new debt? Are you maximizing your retirement plans? These are basic steps to achieve financial freedom. Once you have set your financial house and path in order, then it is appropriate to look for more risky investments. Your ultimate goal should be to have a net worth and a net income that will sustain you through your retirement years. This requires some realistic calculations, planning and personal discipline to achieve it.

I

n realizing that investing involves some level of risk - the higher the earned rate of return on the investment typically requires higher risk – you can establish your own determination of what is “acceptable risk.” Also, knowing the value of your investment will fluctuate over time, which means you may gain or lose money on any given day but that is the nature of the markets. Investing for retirement is usually a long-term plan that changes as the retirement time-horizon gets closer, typically shifting to more conservative investments to help insure your retirement goals stay intact. The trigger words here are 'mid-life', 'conservative' and 'protecting accumulated assets.’ My investment style aligns with these trigger words even without being mid-life. Why? Because, that is my comfort level. I am not an advocate of riding the waves of big gains and big losses, even if my time horizon is over 20 years. I cringe hearing of other’s investment wins and losses, especially hearing of my peer's investment portfolios crashing during 2008 and 2009 when they plan to retire in 2013 or 2014.

As for investment criteria, I lean more toward a few fundamental practices to prepare for retirement, some of which may not be of popular vote. First and foremost, always live well within your financial means. Second, nearing retirement needs to equate to freedom from financial obligations, meaning eliminating all debts; home mortgage, auto loans, credit cards and setting aside funds for expenditures such as vacations and large purchases. Another fundamental upon retiring is to develop various additional forms of income streams, such as finding part-time employment. This will enhance your spendable income and give you extra freedom during retirement. The concept here is to keep generating an income versus living solely off of your investment portfolio. The alternative is to truly understand the boundaries of living off a fixedincome, which can be a difficult transition for most. This all takes a different kind of financial mindset for the majority of retirees, unless you are already wired to be very fiscally conservative. Many times I have pondered the fact that people spend more time planning vacations and other events than they spend on getting their financial house in order. A sound retirement requires knowing your financial goals, understanding investment options and knowing how to successfully stay on a budget. Or better stated, preferring to spend your attention on short-term goals and not long-term goals. Why not do both!

Digital Marketing Myths By: Jillian Koeneman

W

ith 2014 in full-swing, I hope your business is off to an incredible start! As you navigate through your 2014 goals and strategies I thought it would be helpful to address some popular digital marketing myths that cause many small businesses to get hung up. Myth 1: My business needs a mobile app. Mobile apps are incredibly powerful but only when they provide great value to your customer. Many small businesses get tricked into thinking that they need to pay for someone to develop a mobile app for their company, when really all they need is a mobile-friendly website. Think about how many apps you have downloaded to your phone or tablet that you never use. Now think about how many apps you have downloaded from small businesses and that you utilize daily. My guess is that number is zero. Unless your app is truly revolutionary and will help your customer in a way that isn’t possible through other channels, you don’t need a mobile app. Myth 2: If I build it, they will come. It may have worked for Kevin Costner but, unfortunately,

it’s not going to work for your business. You can have the greatest website ever created but if you don’t have a strategy in place to drive your target audience to your site, it is worthless.

Myth 3: It’s cheaper for my business to handle digital in-house. If you are looking to cut costs when it comes to leverage the web, looking in-house isn’t always the smartest choice. If you don’t already have an experienced, well-versed digital marketing guru on your team, it may be wise to hire out your digital marketing efforts to a qualified individual or company who can jump right in and save you valuable time (and money).

Myth 4: I need to master every social media channel. So many small businesses get caught

up in the thinking that they need to master Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and a blog - all at the same time. While in an ideal world, you would actively engage in many of those channels, you don’t have to participate in all of them to grow your business. Start with one or two channels, the channels your customers are most active and receptive in, and really master them before ever moving onto the next.

Myth 5: A mobile friendly site is not necessary for my small business. In 2013 it finally happened. More people accessed websites via their mobile device than on their desktop. Having a mobile-friendly website for your business is no longer a luxury, it is an absolute necessity. Myth 6: Email marketing is dead. With the recent surge in popularity of social media being used by marketers, you’ve probably heard some people say “email marketing is dead,” which simply is not true. It is changing but it is certainly not dead. Email marketing is an essential element to any marketing strategy because it can deliver the right message to the right person and is measurable. 94% of adults check email every day. People who buy products marketed through email spend 138% more than people who do not receive email offers. Email also generates a 2x return compared to other channels. Cleaning Up Your Schedule

for Spring By: Dylan Lemert

W

e can try to downplay it as much as we want but there’s really no other way about it--our lives are busy. Whether we’re working 40 hours (or more) per week, dealing with the unique stresses that come with raising a family or simply keeping up with the everyday demands of 21st century living, many of us feel like we’re just barely keeping our heads above water.

To help ease any potential meltdowns on our part, recent technological advances have enabled us to keep better tabs on our workloads, helping prioritize our day-to-day schedules. Still, this can do more harm than good and can cause us to randomly wonder, “Did I remember to update the so-and-so app with the suchand-such thing I have going on next week?”

Of course, how each person carries out his or her own think time is different. Some may choose to use it like meditation, others a chance to prioritize shortterm goals. However you choose to wield it, never underestimate the importance of how even 20 minutes of quiet reflection each day can improve your efficiency, calm your nerves and lighten the load of your busy schedule.

Good News: there’s still hope out there for even the busiest among us. By toying with a few simple tricks (and even employing a bit of old-school magic), you’ll be paring back your schedule in no time.

After all, some of the most successful people in the world are champions of routine think time. It’s about time you join their ranks.

Make a List

This may be an incredibly obvious step and you may already be shaking your head at the notion that I’d even suggest so simple of a thing. But I’m not talking about using that fancy note taking Smartphone app of yours. I’m talking about a good, old-fashioned, pen-and-paper list. While the process behind it is mysterious, the act of touching pencil to pad and jotting down some concrete steps about what you wish to accomplish can be an amazingly useful tool. You’ll be saving space in your mental hard drive merely by taking a minute to put thoughts to paper and doing so without the needless distraction of a Smartphone or other digital device beckoning for your precious time. Instead of draining valuable mental energy trying to remember all the things you absolutely need to do, consider carrying a handy list in your purse or pocket. Your memory will thank you.

Set Aside “Think Time”

One of the ails of modern society is a failure to reflect on things before we do them. Daniel Patrick Forrester, author of the book Consider: Harnessing the Power of Reflective Thinking in Your Organization, hammers home a concept that he calls “think time,” which is the process of setting aside specific moments, each day if possible, with the purpose of mentally preparing for the days or weeks ahead. 36 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

Decide if You Really Need to Do That Thing You Only Think You Need to Do Variations of this word have cropped up a handful of times throughout this article: prioritize. It’s a fancy word and its concept sounds so easy we tend to forget what it really means in the first place. Prioritizing, in a nutshell, is none other than putting the things of most importance ahead of the things of least importance. Prioritizing also means asking yourself lots of questions. For instance, it may not mean asking, “Which of these emails do I take a gander at first?” but rather, “Is checking my emails for the sixth time today really the most effective use of my time?” Useful, schedule-liberating prioritization hinges upon personal discernment and discipline, and therefore it’s not always fun. But remember, you’re a busy person and you need to take the measures needed to maximize productivity. Because unless you finally decide to move into that secluded cabin in the woods like you’ve occasionally teased, chances are your cramped schedule is going to stick with you. But once you’re ready to acknowledge you lead a crazy life--and, more importantly, you’re ready to do something about it--taking a crack at the simple suggestions listed here could be the first step in a more liberating direction.

A Splash Of

Sass T

At The Carriage House By: Jessica Haviland

hroughout life everyone had a picture in their mind on where their life would take them, who they would be and where they would be. Some people don’t believe in fate or destiny but there are others, like Judy Cotè, who realized that fate brought her back to The Carriage House. Back in 1851, The Carriage House was first built as a church and was the first Brethren Church in the area. “It was a lot of different things before it became The Carriage House,” Judy said. Until the early 1900’s the building was used as a church and neighbors say it was closed for a while until the prohibition years where the building was used to sell liquor. Before The Carriage House became “The Carriage House,” the building was used for people to rent as a venue for family reunions and family parties. “People always remember this place as a place for gathering,” said Judy.

The First Glance

How did The Carriage House fall into Judy’s hands? Well, this is where the fate and destiny all started. “What is an interesting and less known fact was I found The Carriage House and told my mom to look at it,” Judy said. “I came across it in a classified advertisement. I was 18 at the time and drove over there to look at it. I couldn’t stop talking about it and I think that my mom got the hint and took a look.” Judy’s mom, at the time, owned her own catering and florist company. “I remember as a child that I would stay up with my mom and make floral arraignments,” said Judy. “I was always her helper.”

“People always remember this place as a place for gathering.” -Judy

After a decision was made, her mom decided to own The Carriage House back in 1975.

A Change Of Pace

After high school graduation, Judy received her degree in Marketing and Fashion Merchandising. “Before The Carriage House I had a life in retail,” Judy recalls. “I worked for Polo Ralph Lauren. I worked for very distinguished manufacturing companies which were all very interesting.” And how can working for Ralph Lauren NOT be interesting? 38 MARCH 2014 | SASSY

“At Ralph Lauren, I oversaw 5 of their retail stores and I had about 200 employees,” Judy said. “It was exciting and accelerating. But you can almost think of it as being tiring because I was on the road three to four times a week.” After several years of working in the fashion industry, Judy’s mom called and asked if she would be interested in wanting to take over the restaurant. “My daughter was about a year old at the time,” she said. “It just made more sense for me to take over the restaurant because I wouldn’t be on the road all time.” It has been 14 years now since Judy and her husband, Adrian, have owned The Carriage House.

Making It Their Own

After Judy and her husband took over the restaurant, they discovered that it was rather hard to start making it their own. “The first two years were very hard to find my way in a business that my mother established and created,” she said. “There are a lot of components that are in retail that are very appealing to me. My husband and I talked about how we can incorporate those components into the restaurant.” Walking into The Carriage House, customers will see an art collection and a perennial garden where guests can dine by that wasn’t there before Judy became the owner. The walls inside the restaurant have a collection of Hoosier Salon paintings from 1890 through 1970 and a collection of Francis Focer Brown artwork that was known as “The American Van Gogh.” (See Sidebar for their Flower Calendar.) Even with a few, yet elegant, changes that Judy and her husband have made, they still stand by the philosophy and vision that her mother set almost 40 years ago; “Provide artistically executed classic recipes using traditional French preparation methods and the finest ingredients available; serve graciously and professionally with an expert wait staff; and, delight guests with beauty and tasteful surroundings.”

The Beauty In Fine Dining

With 25 employees at The Carriage House, Judy enforces and encourages each and every employee to provide the best customer service possible. “We like to go above and beyond the expected for quality dining,” she said. “One of the biggest things is quality and we really don’t cut any corners.” One aspect that The Carriage House offers is having fresh floral arrangements on each table and they change within the season. “A few weeks ago we had a couple who visited for their 50th year anniversary and they personally asked for their tables to have floral arrangements for their guests to take home with them,” Judy said. “You always feel so special when you leave and you’re carrying flowers home.” The Carriage House is also very well known for their wine selection. “We are the most celebrated restaurant in Indiana,” Judy says proudly. “We have received the AAA Four Diamond Award for 25 years and the Wine Spectator for 28 years, which recognizes us as one of the best in the world.” “For a while, my mother was the only person in the area that had a wine cellar,” she said. “In the state of Indiana, there are only three places that have received the Wine Spectator Award, and we are one of them. Also, we are in the top 15 percent of wine lists in the world.”

Moving Forward

With small changes and personal touches that Judy and her husband make as the years move forward, there is one thing that they can’t ultimately do, change locations. “In the past, people have asked us to look at new properties and to be a part of a new development but The Carriage House can’t be separated from the property it’s on,” Judy said. “It’s part of this property. If we do something different, it can’t be a part of The Carriage House. There is just so much history. If we changed where we were, we would change who we are.” With the change of pace from a bustling city and living the fashionista life to owning a local restaurant, Judy wouldn’t want it any other way. “It was more of a natural destiny for me,” she said. And who can fight destiny when it’s meant to be?

Sweethearts Ball Supports A Rosie Place Wells Fargo table – Chuck & Stephanie Stephens, Greg & Jan Hyduk, Pat & Tina Deka, David & Kerry Stephens

The generosity of the community was exemplified again at the 2nd Annual Sweethearts Ball held on Valentine’s Day to support the medically fragile children and their families who are served by A Rosie Place. Over 200 guests filled the Palais Royale to raise funds and awareness for A Rosie Place, a specialty hospital designed to serve children who have complex medical needs and require medical intervention for their everyday living. The theme of the Sweethearts Ball was celebrating exceptional relationships; Dr. Femi Okanlami, a neonatologist, and Dr. Bunmi Okanlami, a pediatric intensivist, were this year’s honorees. Their impact in our community and upon families is both profound and a great cause for celebration. Special guests included Todd and Jennifer Igney who spoke passionately about how A Rosie Place has impacted their family. The vision of A Rosie Place is a home where caring and support-
