Tip: To add the “wow” factor, purchase a plastic cauldron (available at party or craft stores), a plastic hand and dry ice. Place the punch bowl inside the cauldron, on top of the dry ice and the Witches Brew cocktail will appear to be magically smoking!

Halloween Party Ideas By: Allison Boelcke Smith
Halloween isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of holiday. Throw the Halloween party that best suits your style – kid-friendly, spooky adults-only or even glam.
kid-friendly Veer on the side of caution when hosting a Halloween party for the whole family, as you never know the threshold kids (or even their parents!) can tolerate in terms of “scary stuff.”
Décor:
Some lighthearted but festive décor ideas include: • Stencil letters or shapes onto colored contact paper to stick up onto the wall, such as “Boo” over the buffet or “boo”-ffet table. • Make decorative crafts, such as spiders made out of balls with eyes drawn on and pipe cleaners for legs, or ghosts made from lollipops covered with white cloth and tied.
decorative crafts
Food:
It’s all about the presentation, especially with younger attendees – put together a Halloween-themed spread, such as: • Jack-o-Lantern Quesadillas – cut out triangles on the top tortilla to make a pumpkin face. • Popcorn Ball “Skulls” on Sticks – upgrade standard popcorn balls and add little brown candies for the eyes and candy corn for the nose/mouth, then make them handheld by serving them on sticks.
Activities:
Keep the young ones entertained, while saving yourself some stress with these less messy but still super fun activities: • No-Carve Pumpkin Decorating – provide stencils and markers or other craft supplies, along with jars covered in orange contact paper for kids to make their own “jar-o-lanterns” to keep candy in. Bonus: they’ll last much longer than a carved pumpkin! • Stay-Dry Apple Bobbing – skip the buckets of water and instead, tie apples around strings and hang them around a branch or hook indoors and let kids try to eat them hands-free. 8

Monster Cupcakes decorate cupcakes with silly or scary faces.
spooky
Signature Halloween Cocktails – an orange, purple, or green tinted martini will fit perfectly with a glam Halloween theme, while a classic Bloody Mary can stand on its name alone!
For the more hardcore Halloween lovers out there, a spooky Halloween party can fulfill their fearful wishes. Get a little gory with these ideas for a spooky Halloween shindig that will be sure to result in the ideal combination of terror and delight.
Décor:
There are so many options for scary Halloween decorations that it can be overwhelming (and pricy) if you try to purchase every item that appeals to you. Instead, make your décor more cohesive by focusing on a specific scary theme, such as: • Supernatural – ghosts, spirts, witches, demons, mummies • Gory – vampires, zombies
Food:
Balance a scary theme with your food, while still ensuring the presentation doesn’t make them too unappetizing to enjoy. Try out these tasty but thematic party food ideas: • Crudité fingers – use peanut butter or cream cheese to glue slivered almonds onto vegetable sticks to make “fingers.” • Buckets of bones – display chicken wings or ribs in buckets instead of platters. • Floating hand – fill a latex glove with water and freeze to keep party beverages cool.
Activities:
While mingling, taking photos, and perhaps enjoying some cocktails may suffice for an adult Halloween party, provide a few party games to join everyone together: • Scary Charades – update the classic with a gory twist, by creating Halloween words or phrases for your guests to act out.
Horror Movie Fun – prepare trivia questions or movie quotes from horror movies so your guests can test their knowledge.
glam Ghosts, goblins and murder scenes not really your thing? Add a touch of sophistication to the holiday with a glam Halloween soiree that still keeps the spirit of the holiday.
Décor:
Halloween is known for being over-the-top, but you can easily bring glam to a party by choosing a theme that is a bit outside the standard fare. • Autumn – use rich autumn tones, such as burnt orange, reds and deep golds, and decorate with lanterns, candles and gourds instead of regular pumpkins. • Dark and Sleek – go a little edgier by embracing the moodier ambiance of the holiday with a black-and burgundy theme and touches of metallic or even lace.
Food:
Keep your Halloween food spread chic with elegant plating options for your Halloween hors d'oeuvres, such as: • Bubbling “Cauldron” Fondue – whether you opt for savory cheese or sweet chocolate, your guests are sure to enjoy the novelty of dipping items into melted sauces. • Seasonal Squash – serve your go-to party dips in hollowed out squash for an autumn twist on your classic appetizers.
Activities:
Captivate your Halloween party crowd with classy party activities that are a touch vintage to maintain your glam vibe. • Classic Scary Movie Festival – have old black and white movies playing throughout the night for a hint of horror without the carnage of more modern movies. • Murder Mystery – if you’re feeling ambitious and have enthusiastic guests, put on a retro murder mystery game of “whodunit?” using a Murder Mystery Kit from a party store or online. the sweetest day debate:
Should You Adopt a New Holiday Tradition? By: Allison Boelcke Smith
Sweetest Day is observed each year on the third Saturday in October. Although it appears on the surface to have a lot in common with Valentine’s Day, its unverified origins seem to be quite different. Legend has it, Sweetest Day was created by candy company employee and philanthropist Herbert Birch Kingston in 1922 as an event to donate candy to the underprivileged whom he referred to as the “forgotten.” It eventually morphed into a time to show appreciation for others of personal importance until it became what it is often thought of today: a holiday to celebrate romantic love (sound familiar?). Think about these factors to determine if celebrating Sweetest Day is right for you:
You Could Use a Romantic Night Out
You Want to Express Your Appreciation to Loved Ones
If you love the premise behind Valentine’s Day but tend to steer clear of actually going out to celebrate because of the crowds or scheduling, or you keep meaning to plan a special night out with your sweetie, perhaps Sweetest Day could be your “alternate” romantic celebration night. Since it’s on a Saturday each year, it makes it easier to fit into your schedule or get a babysitter if necessary. Plus, you can get a chance to check out some of the romantic restaurants or other hot date night spots you’ve had your eye on but whose reservations are probably packed to the brim on Valentine’s Day.
The romantic aspect of Sweetest Day may be the more glamorous aspect for the commercial part of the holiday, but it is certainly not the only part of the multi-faceted day. It can also be a day to show anyone who is special to you (friends, family, colleagues, mentors, etc.) that you’re grateful for the positive impact they’ve had on your life. You can give them their favorite candy treat as a gift, along with a card or letter that thanks them for all of the nice things they’ve done and how they’ve “sweetened” your life.

OCTOBER 2015 | SASSY
You’ve Been Meaning to Do Some Charity Work Even if you already donate money to your favorite organizations, if volunteering your time is at the top of your To-Do list, Sweetest Day is the perfect reminder to pencil it onto your calendar. While Sweetest Day’s roots aren’t factually proven, the most accepted backstory is that it was intended as a day to give back to those less privileged. If that is also your goal, take Sweetest Day back to its charitable roots -celebrate your favorite cause by having actual face time with those for whom the organization’s efforts support and show they are not the “forgotten.”
You Have Midwestern Pride Often when a tradition or item is so ingrained into one’s upbringing, you may discover a new fascination when you learn that people in other parts of the country have never even heard of it! Sweetest Day was thought to have originated in Cleveland, Ohio and while it spread outside the state, it hasn’t quite taken the country by storm and is mainly only celebrated in the Midwest. If you’re a native Midwestern who loves to commemorate your hometown pride by partaking in all things local, Sweetest Day may take on a whole other level of personal significance to you.
really like to develop “ Irelationships with my patients and find it very rewarding
to get to know two or three
generations while taking care of an entire family.
With such a vague beginning and overall purpose, Sweetest Day can mean whatever you want it to mean to you. Stick with the norm of it being Valentine’s Day 2.0, make it a time to schedule charitable work into your calendar, or skip it all together if none of the reasons appeal to you. But, at least you’ll have the satisfaction of making an informed choice and proactively detracting against naysayers instead of looking like the Sweetest Day version of Scrooge!

Stressed out Students…
And Why Parents May Be to Blame
The same people who made sure there were no monsters under the bed, sang soothing lullabies and took care of every boo-boo may very well be the people who are the most responsible for your high school or college students’ stress. A number of college mental health professionals have noted that the very people who want the best for their children may actually be the ones preventing their kids from achieving that goal. It’s not surprising parents have been more protective. Social media and around-theclock news coverage exposes us to seemingly endless stories about child abductions, molestation and other tragedies. While experts debate whether the number of incidents is rising or if the number of occurrences is steady but reported more often, parents become increasingly vigilant. It’s also apparent in school life. With our society’s hyper focus on grades, tests scores and social success, children and their parents feel pressured to strive for perfection in every area. But mental health experts warn there’s a fine line between necessary vigilance and becoming too protective. It holds true in academic and social spheres as well. They warn there’s also danger is going over that line – children who aren’t given the opportunity to learn how to negotiate difficult situations never learn the coping skills and strategies that will help them to deal the complicated adult world they begin facing in high school. 12
OCTOBER 2015 | SASSY
“Helicopter parenting” is one of the more common phrases used to describe parents who hover around their children, always ready to jump in and save them from difficult situations. It’s an ironic scenario – the very act of trying to make life easier or better for their children actually results in causing them more anxiety later in life. It also leads to children who are unable to act independently as adults, unsure how to navigate through the pitfalls everyone faces. They underlying message this type parenting conveys is that their children aren’t ready to make the right decisions.
“
Students can take advantage of the resources their schools guidance or mental health facilities offer.”
This scenario becomes particularly apparent later in high school and into college. The route to being a successful adult has become a stereotypical journey; students are told they must get excellent grades and achieve high test scores in high school (plus join clubs, play a sport, volunteer and work) so they can go to a premier college. At college they’re supposed to continue their exceptional trajectory and excel in every subject while making new friends and accumulating meaningful life experiences. It’s no wonder they feel stressed out! In fact, many college mental facilities report that they now see increasing numbers of students for these very reasons. The good news is that there are ways to alleviate this stress on multiple levels. In the short term, students can take advantage of the resources their schools guidance or mental health facilities offer. These can take the form of counseling, stress reduction workshops and other resources.
In the long term, a change in parenting style may be tough and tricky but necessary. Here are some ways to re-think the parenting dynamic: • Failure is always an option – actually, failure is one of the best teachers there is. History is chock-full of people who succeeded on the world stage because they failed. Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Walt Disney are perhaps some of the most recognizable examples of this. Remember: allowing your child to fail isn’t a bad reflection your parenting or your child. It’s a necessary step to learning important lessons.
• Every skill is learned by doing – every time you step in to help your child your taking away the chance for him or her to learn an important skill. Instead of doing the task, help by talking him/her through the process. This is particularly important in learning how to relate to teachers and dealing with applications. Ask your child how he or she thinks the task should be completed, offer guidance and advice then let him or her complete it.
• Offer support rather than revoking it – the ugly flipside of helicopter parenting is the perception that if the child doesn’t live up to expectations love, money or respect will be withheld. The reality is that when a child doesn’t meet his or her parents’ expectations is when he/she most needs support. Be sure to give it.

The FALL into WINTER Workout By: Abbi Pollyea The transition from fall to winter is a magical time of year. There is a sense of coziness in the midwest that invites us to grab a cup of hot cocoa and sit in front of a fire. But, it is also essential to take care of our bodies throughout the cooler months. The weather and atmosphere can really tempt us to halt our workouts and attack the comfort food. In knowing this, let's make this workout a part of your daily life. It is not complicated and is very effective in keeping our bodies standing tall and strong! Part of this workout takes place outside but please get out there no matter how chilly it gets. Fresh air and all the beautiful fall colors are invigorating and will help motivate you to get moving! Provided is a fun playlist to move to. Let this workout stay with you through the fall and all the way into winter.
Walk the Dog (Cardio) The furry friends we love so much need walked, even in the cold! If a furry friend is not available, a brisk walk solo or with a friend will suffice. To not cramp up, keep your head up and look straight ahead. This will ensure good breathing technique. To intensify, wear ankle or wrist weights. Walk fast enough to feel your heart rate increase and try to get 30 minutes in.

ONE LEGGED PUSH UP This is a staple in any workout! It strengthens the whole body while adding in a little booty work. Begin in a plank and then lift the right leg. Keep the lifted leg straight and complete 8-10 push ups. Repeat with the left leg lifted. Remember to not arch the back. The lifted leg will help strengthen and tone the gluteals so long as the core supports the low back. To modify, put the knee of the grounded leg on the floor. To intensify, put an ankle weight on the lifted leg. 14
OCTOBER 2015 | SASSY
SCOOPED BICEP CURLS This exercise is inspired by a movement intended for the Pilates Reformer. It is just as effective on the mat. Begin sitting up tall with both legs together and straight out in front of you. Reach arms out with palms facing up and then roll back to where the waist of your pants begins, or until you feel your abs kick in. Stay in this abdominal "scooped" position and bend arms to a 90 degree angle. traighten arms back to start to complete one rep. Complete 20-30 reps. Remember, stay in the "scooped" position throughout. To modify, place a pillow behind the low back. To intensify, add 3-5 pound hand-weights (soup cans work too).
OBLIQUES This waist trimmer is a favorite both in the fitness and pilates realm. It is favored because it is so effective in toning the waist. In addition, it also helps to eliminate back pain by both flexing and rotating the spine. Begin on back with head and feet down, knees bent and hands behind the head. Firmly imprint low back onto the mat and lift head and shoulders up, then lift legs into a table top position one at a time. From here, stretch right leg forward while rotating the right side of the torso toward the left knee. Repeat to the other side. Perform 12-20 reps. Do not try and touch the opposite elbow to the opposite knee. Focus instead on lifting the opposite shoulder toward the opposite knee. Keep elbows wide apart throughout. To modify, keep feet on ground with knees bent while rotating the torso from side to side. To intensify, add ankle weights or perform more repetitions.
KNEELING SIDE KICK Now that we have trimmed the waist, the next exercise will target the outer thighs. Begin in kneeling and reach right hand to the floor while reaching the left leg out to the side. Attempt to get the lifted leg parallel to the floor. This is the "start" position. From here, lower the leg halfway to the ground and return to start for one rep. Repeat 1020 times. Repeat this entire exercise on the opposite side. To modify, do this lying on side instead of kneeling. To intensify, put an ankle weight on the lifting leg. To continue to the next level, make circles with the lifted leg after the lifts; eight circles in each direction.
BREASTSTROKE This exercise will strengthen the postural muscles along the spine. In other words, this exercise will help you to stand tall! Begin on belly with legs pulled tightly together and straightened. Reach arms in front and lift chest and arms off the floor. Keep legs on ground throughout entire exercise. Lift torso a bit higher as arms sweep out and around towards feet. Return to start to complete one rep. Repeat 8-10 to complete the set. Make sure you keep chin down throughout to ensure a safe neck. To modify, lift and lower torso with arms behind the entire time. To intensify, add hand weights. ď Ś

Jackie Harder was diligent about her yearly health screenings. Conscientious about her health, Harder who works full-time and carries health insurance albeit a high-deductible policy, never gave her routine health care screenings a second thought until she started receiving her annual mammograms at age 40. “As soon as I started getting mammograms, it was recommended that I would need additional views,” she said. Harder also learned the additional testing would not be covered by her insurance. She was ultimately responsible for the $1,500 bill that would follow. Harder, 48, experienced this three times. Luckily each time her ultrasound was negative. However these additional tests started turning into a financial dilemma for Harder. Each time she had a mammogram, she knew it would cost her out of pocket due to the additional testing that would be required, resulting in a hospital bill that would take months to pay off. At that point, Harder’s routine mammogram were becoming unaffordable. “It got frustrating. The mammogram (that was covered by her insurance) was never enough and I can’t afford to be doing this,” said Harder. “After paying for three diagnostics tests out-of-pocket, I waited longer than a year to have my next routine mammogram,” she said. “The cost was just too prohibitive. In the back of my head, I kept telling myself I will do a mammogram. I just couldn’t find it in me to spend that kind of money, because I am still taking care of two teenagers.” This was not an easy decision for Harder as she recalls worrying about putting off her yearly mammogram. Cancer runs in her family. Her mother died of lung cancer. Even though Harder’s previous results always came back negative, there were lingering worries that remained in the back of her mind. “It left me with a lot of sleepless nights and wondering if they would find cancer this time,” said Harder. It was during that stressful time Harder discovered Breast Health Programs, a program of United Health Services in Granger, which helps women get mammograms and other diagnostic tests they need at no cost. After hearing about a friend’s daughter who had recently sought help from
Breast Health Programs, Harder wasted no time in contacting them. She discovered help was available through specialized funds that help both the underserved and underinsured. “I called Kim Zobrosky at Breast Health Programs and she was very sympathetic to me and she was very hopeful that they could help me,” said Harder. According to Zobrosky, patient advocate for Breast Health Programs, the fund that helped Harder was from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT) and it assists both women without insurance and women with insurance, but they can qualify at a higher income level than the standard Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. “The unique thing about IBCAT is that it covers additional views after a regular screening mammograms for women who haven’t met their deductible, as well as covers screenings and diagnostic services for women who simply don’t have insurance,” said Zobrosky, a breast cancer survivor herself.
“What we are seeing are women that are thinking that insurance is paying for everything, but are blindsided by their high deductibles and resulting unexpected medical costs.” Mary Heck, Executive Director of United Health Services who oversees Breast Health Programs, said the IBCAT program is a very important ‘catch-all’ fund because it also has higher income qualifications than the standard state-funded Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Raising the income level is very important, especially for people like Harder who are working full-time, yet have a high-deductible health insurance policy, however do not have the extra resources to pay high medical bills often associated with additional mammogram testing. As soon as Harder received the news that funding was available for her, she wasted no time in making her diagnostic ultrasound appointment. “Kim called me and said the money came through,” said Harder. “I never even received a bill.”
Due to the Affordable Health Care Act, Zobrosky expects to hear from more people like Harder. “There are a lot of women like Jackie Harder who are working full-time, paying for their own health insurance, but still at the end of the day, are getting hit with expensive medical bills due to high deductibles,” said Zobrosky. “Having to make decisions on their health based on the anticipated medical bill that comes with it, it’s a tough position for any woman to be in.” Had Breast Health Programs not helped her, Harder said she is still not sure she would have been able to pay for the additional diagnostic test. It was a frustrating time period for her. Harder worked hard to support her family and pay for health insurance and assistance was something that she never looked for, but she needed it this time. Heck also said there are many grants and community funds that are available for uninsured and insured women. “What we are seeing are women that are thinking that insurance is paying for everything, but are blindsided by their high deductibles and resulting unexpected medical costs,” said Heck. “We are like the ‘211’ of breast health. At United Health Services Breast Health Programs, we have an array of grants and community funds available to help women receive needed services, as well as provide valuable patient navigation.” According to Heck, Breast Health Programs also coordinates a full-range of breast health screening and diagnostics services. They advocate for women’s health through education and awareness, screenings to diagnosis and survivorship. Annually, Breast Health Programs touches the lives of 1,200 underserved women. “Sometimes when you work full time, there are no resources for you. It is nice as a struggling, single working parent to know that there are resources out there for people, because I find dead ends all the time,” said Harder, of her experience with Breast Health Programs. “I feel good knowing that were people who cared. They were very sympathetic and determined to help me. I don’t think I would have done the test without them.”

Flu
Vaccine
Right for You? Flu season is right around the corner – instances of the influenza virus generally start occurring around October and can last as long as May. Since it takes around two weeks for flu vaccinations to become effective after being administered, it’s important to plan ahead. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccinations for everyone over 6 months, the vaccination does come with its own set of benefits and disadvantages. Check out these pros and cons of flu vaccinations to determine if it’s right for you:
Pros of the Flu Vaccine Protection for High Risk Groups from Complications
If you have a compromised immune system, or are frequently in close contact with the elderly or young children who are at high risk for flu complications, the flu vaccine may be a beneficial choice. According to the CDC, a flu shot can reduce the chances of becoming infected by the influenza virus by 80%. So although it is not a guarantee against getting sick from the flu, you may find the benefits of taking the preventative action of a flu shot outweigh the risks of the shot itself if you or someone you’re close with is at risk of being hospitalized for flu complications if they catch the virus.
High Availability at a Low Cost (Even for the Uninsured)
Flu vaccinations are often provided by workplaces free of charge – often for not just employees, but their families as well. For those who don’t have affordable health insurance, flu vaccinations still tend to be widely accessible at a lower cost, at around $40 or so. This out-of-pocket cost for preventative measure may be more cost-effective than if you contract the flu and: Have complications that require treatment (even just an urgent care visit can be over a couple hundred dollars without insurance) Have to miss work and don’t have paid sick days, causing you to lose more money than the cost of the shot You don’t have to have a family doctor to get a flu shot – they are often available at health clinics, schools, and pharmacies.
Cons of the Flu Vaccine Concern Over Ingredients
The main, undisputed negative health effect for flu vaccines is that it can be dangerous for those with allergies to eggs. The influenza vaccine is actually cultivated inside chicken eggs and is therefore automatically not recommended for you if you have an established egg allergy. The egg issue also brings a debate for vegans since the vaccine is inherently not vegan since it utilizes animal byproducts. Another possible concern that some people may have regarding flu shot ingredients is the inclusion of the preservative thimerosal, which contains ethylmercury. While not all flu shots contain thimerosal, and the medical community says there is no conclusive evidence that the preservative is harmful, if you’re concerned or opposed, you can opt to skip the vaccination or request a thimerosal-free version, which is available in limited quantities.
“The most commonly experienced side effects are considered mild and include redness and soreness at the injection site, fatigue, and mild fever.”
Possible Side Effects
There is a risk of side effects when receiving a vaccination, and the flu shot is no exception. The most commonly experienced side effects are considered mild and include redness and soreness at the injection site, fatigue, and mild fever. If you’ve had an allergic reaction in the past, a flu shot is not recommended. There are also extremely rare instances of Guillain-Barre syndrome (an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack the nervous system) after being administered a flu shot.
If “health is wealth” you need to approach your healthcare decisions with as much research and deliberation as you would for financial choices. Determine if you’re comfortable that the benefits of the flu shot outweigh the side effects and risks before making your decision. Being educated about flu vaccinations will make you feel empowered in your decision, whichever one that may be. Riding With The
Family By: Amy Westbrook Pracht
For Marisa Saputo, life is about family, opportunity and Harley-Davidson. And, for the Saputo family, all three go hand in hand. Nine years ago the Saputo family jumped on an opportunity to take over the Harley-Davidson dealership in Elkhart. After living in Colorado Springs for five years managing a Harley-Davidson dealership in Pueblo, a great opportunity allowed her and her husband Russ to move their young family closer to their extended family.
20
OCTOBER 2015 | SASSY
“I
am originally from New York and my husband is from Michigan,” said Saputo. “We didn’t have any family in Elkhart but my husband was interested in moving out this way. We have a lot of family in Michigan and we used to live in Lansing.” While it was the opportunity to be closer to family, there was also an opportunity to be part of another family business and that was just as enticing for them. “We have always been involved in family businesses,” said Saputo. Her husband’s parents, Russell Sr. and Leeann Saputo have always ensured that. “They are always making sure that everyone has a family business to work in. They are always building for the next generation and they have always been about that. We do everything together.” Saputo said her husband’s family businesses dates back to World War II when her husband’s grandfather first started a family business and it has continued today. “We are really family based and family oriented,” said Saputo. For Marisa and her husband, they are also very family oriented when it comes to raising their own five children. As parents to Russell, 18, a college student pursuing engineering; Alessandro, 17; Mateo, 15; Marco, 10; and Angelina, 8, they understand the value of family and enjoy seeing their own children grow up with the opportunities their family business has extended them. They are all involved in the family’s Harley-Davidson dealership. “They have grown up around motorcycles and Harley-Davidson,” said Saputo. “My kids work there when they want to earn some money, they do little jobs. I think they enjoy the employees and the fun atmosphere.” They also enjoy riding dirt bikes of their own. “My husband and his family have been avid riders since he was little,” she said. “Watching your kids grow up in it too, it is so fun.” Saputo is quick to point that while they enjoy the fun and excitement of
dirt bikes and four wheelers, she and her husband adhere to strict safety rules for dirt bikes, as well as the motorcycles they sell in their dealership. “We are always concerned about safety. Indiana does not have a helmet law,” she said. “But, we are always pushing helmets. My husband, friends and children are not allowed to ride without one.” This also includes her daughter, who Saputo is proud to say also has her own dirt bike. “She can ride a dirt bike, but she is very big on her four-wheeler,” she said. “She is very girly, but she certainly does most of the things her brothers do.” Angelina is very well on her way to growing up and becoming a Harley-Davidson owner too. If she does, she will be among the rising trend of women purchasing motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidson motorcycles. As a family working in the harley business since 2001, Saputo has enjoyed seeing the rising trend of women purchasing motorcycles over the last decade. In 2013,
One way Harley-Davidson is actively pursuing women motorcycle (or wouldbe motorcycle) riders is through their unique “garage parties.” These parties held at dealerships are a fun way to teach women the basic knowledge of motorcycles, safety and other thing that might be interesting for them, including the right way to pick up a bike off the ground. “These fun parties take away the intimidation of riding a bike. We do them about once a year,” she said. Saputo said it is not just the stereotypical biker in full leather gear who are buying the motorcycles. She sees women in full, black leather chaps to the soccer mom to the music teacher. The common denominator in all buyers is their passion for HarleyDavidson. “I think for people who love Harleys, they love the noise that the Harley makes. I also think it is the wind in your hair and riding with a group of riders and stopping to have lunch and then riding off in a scenic area, it’s exciting.” Women don’t have to drive their own motorcycles to enjoy the freedom of
“They love the noise that the Harley makes... the wind in your hair and riding off in a scenic area, it's very exciting.” Harley-Davidson sold more motorcycles to women riders than all other motorcycle companies combined. “I think HarleyDavidson is really accommodating to women,” said Saputo. “They want more women to enjoy the freedom of riding and I know women like Harley-Davidson. They have a good name, the best quality, back their product up and have great warranties. It’s sort of like when a woman loves a great shoe, they want the very best.” She also credits Harley-Davidson for making a smaller sportster motorcycles, which is easier for women to ride.
the road that Harley-Davidson provides. Around 25% of Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold were influenced by a woman. Saputo is in that category as she prefers to ride along as a passenger with her husband as they enjoy cruising throughout the scenic farmland of Northern Indiana. “When we lived in Colorado, we would go through the mountains, but it is amazing what you will find here in Indiana,” she said. “There are so many beautiful places, the farmlands have a lot to offer. Lots of trees and greenery. It’s really pretty.”

Boss’s Day SASSY

What To Get for
By: Marianne C. Weesner
October 16th is Boss’s Day! This is a great opportunity to show your appreciation to your boss who has mentored you, shown support or just is an all around great boss. Before you decide to go solo on a gift for your boss, consider asking your coworkers to chip in on a bigger present.
Consider these suggestions if you plan on going solo for the boss’s gift:
A Mug with Coffee or Tea
Getting a mug for your boss with a nice flavored coffee or tea (depending on what your boss prefers) is a simple gift idea, but still shows some thought. Pairing the coffee or tea with the mug makes the gift idea more special.
A Book
Purchasing a book for your boss that he or she has mentioned is a tangible way to show you have been listening. It also is something they can use to rejuvenate those creative juices.
Gift card and Note
A gift card to a favorite lunchtime restaurant is a good option if you know what your boss’s favorite place to grab a bite is. I would include a card with a meaningful memory of a time you appreciated your boss’s help or mentorship. Sometimes your words can be worth more than something with a monetary value. 24

Cockopalooza:
Party With A Purpose Saturday, September 12th marked the 12th Annual Cockopalooza cancer-fighting event in Elkhart. Hundreds of community attendees joined together in this family-friendly event in downtown Central Park for a funfilled day of games, food vendors, silent auction, music and various kids’ activities. This was the second year that Cockopalooza teamed up with the ‘Pillars of Elkhart’ to bring events downtown Elkhart to continue the cancer-fighting tradition and “Party with a Purpose!” The group, comprised of all volunteer members, hosted the event to support local non-profit agency, United Cancer Services of Elkhart County focusing on juveniles battling cancer. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and funds raised at the event are earmarked in a special UCS “Cockopalooza” fund to financially aid Elkhart youth under the age of 18 who are going through their cancer journey.

United Cancer Services provides assistance to local cancer patients and their families in a way that enhances their quality of life by educating Elkhart County residents in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. “Cancer is unfortunately one disease most community members can relate to; we’re all affected by cancer at some point, whether it’s a family member, neighbor, a friend...,” says Meggan Fink, Cockopalooza Committee member. “It’s up to us to rally together to support and celebrate cancer survivors on a local level. Cockopalooza provides a day of healthy activity, memorable camaraderie and spirited competition – all for a great cause!”

Cockopalooza is best known for the infamous tournament rightfully called “Freedomball,” which is a hybrid combination of several familiar recreational games; softball, dodge ball and kick ball, all rolled into a sport that is easy to learn, easy to play and exciting to watch. It is designed to encourage people of all ages, with any level of athletic experience, to participate in an event that generates money for cancer support locally. The event with a funny name is fondly titled after Corey “Cocko” Cox, who was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia in 2004 while in his early 20’s. His friends and family began working together to create the “Cockopalooza” event, hosting two events to support Corey in 2004 and 2005. This marked the beginning the organization and began the long journey as a local fundraising organization aimed at helping local families with children fighting cancer….. “Cockopalooza”! The Planning Committee will begin the planning for 2016 – stay tuned for the 13th Annual Cockopalooza date in fall of 2016! anvas South Bend was designed to accomplish several objectives: to create a photography exhibit that would impact South Bend and be a collaborative effort with other photographers, to put art in unexpected places as a chance for the community to see possibilities for art where there is none and to see art projected in large spaces. On Friday, September 4th, South Bend was introduced to the large scale exhibit. It was launched during First Fridays. The community walked around to the 10 sites and enjoy lots of different photography. Ten photographers showcased between 10-20 images under the theme of “Belonging.” Everyone had a different take on it which was fascinating to see unfold. Photographers were Grant Beachy, Brenda Bowyer, Gina Costa, Susan Moore, Myriam Nicodemus, Beth Parin, Peter Ringenberg, Craig Sheaks, Marcus Snowden and Matthew Stackowicz. People who attended said it was amazing being able to walk around and see huge images on the buildings. It was the perfect combination to bring people together over art and to be able to meet the artist. Photos Provided By: Mike Montana

O’Briens By Lisa Genova Reviewed By: Lynell Wolff, Reference Services, Harris Branch Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library
If you haven’t been introduced to best-selling author Lisa Genova yet, check out a copy of her latest book Inside the O’Briens. Once again, Genova has been inspired by neuroscience and the human spirit to write about a little known disease. Huntington’s (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects only a small percentage of the population. Genetically transmitted, the effects both physical and emotional are movingly told by the family members of Boston veteran police officer Joe O’Brien.

Genova’s skillful character development caught me from the start. It is as if Joe, his wife Rosie and their children are family members, neighbors or even best friends. Inside the O’Briens is at times humorous but also heartbreaking. It is the story of an ordinary family faced with a devastating diagnosis. Each of Joe and Rosie’s children have a 50% chance of inheriting Huntington’s disease from their father who as a young boy watched his mother die from it. A simple blood test – positive or negative – will reveal and important detail of what the future holds for each of Joe’s children. But do they really want to know? How do you live life knowing in 10-20 years you will be dead? The reader witnesses Joe’s love for his family in spite of HD’s impact on his body. Genova writes accurately about Huntington’s disease but also with compassion filled sensitivity. Lisa Genova travels worldwide speaking about the topics depicted in her contemporary novels. She has a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Harvard and encourages others to become actively involved in showing compassion for others who through no fault of their own are stricken with debilitating disease. Inside the O’Briens is one book I could not put down.
