Delancey: A Man, A Woman, A Restaurant, A Marriage By Molly Wizenberg

SASSY Book
Picks
olly Wizenberg’s newest book Delancey: a Man, a Woman, a Restaurant, a Marriage could be considered a prequel to her New York Times’ bestseller A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table (2009). When Molly Wizenberg married Brandon Pettit she knew her life would never be boring or ordinary. Wizenberg’s job in publishing provided a steady income while she pursued her dream as a writer. Magazine articles, a food blog and her first book kept life moving in a somewhat predictable direction. Brandon, on the other hand, was anything but predictable. Without objection Molly watched as the love of her life – a trained composer – passionately pursued building: an espresso machine, a wooden boat, a violin and finally an ice cream shop. Nothing ever materialized from these pursuits but they were happy and as a couple Molly and Brandon enjoyed life together. The passion they both shared was cooking. Both loved food and had learned to cook at an early age. When Brandon suggested starting a pizza restaurant Molly agreed it would be a great idea. She had encouraged him with all of his ideas but like the others she expected this one to fall by the wayside – except it didn’t. The journey to opening day for “Delancey” is a trip only an insider could tell and Molly Wizenberg does a great job. She shares the highs and the lows, and seasons her book with a few great recipes and culinary tips. Delancey is not a cookbook but definitely a must read for those who love cooking, have read Wizenberg’s first book or who have visited her blog Orangette - named the world’s best food blog by The London Times. After reading this book a visit to Delancey’s in Seattle is on my bucket list! 8

I
t's officially the fall season but some days it can actually feel more like the beginning of winter. Our skin will start changing in ways you all may be too excited to handle (insert smirk smile here)! Not really, I know. This past couple of weeks, clients have been concerned about breakouts appearing during their late 30s, 40s, 50s and even 60s. Many of us think after going through our teen years, this situation would not be an issue anymore. Unfortunately, this will not be the case. Our bodies are undergoing constant changes, and our skin will be affected by the weather and our hormones.
Fix The Breakout
The first and most important step is to figure out what is causing the problem. DO NOT start attacking the blemishes and pimples before knowing what is causing them first. This can actually do more harm to your skin in the future! If it is weather related, the wind and cold air will over-dry your skin causing irritation, and the breakout will happen on the most dried out areas. Try using a more hydrating face moisturizer/ cream and see if the breakouts diminish. You may not even need to apply it all over your face, but rather just on those areas that are having the problem. 10
October 2014 | SASSY
WHY? If the breakout continues, or you notice it comes when your menstrual cycle is about to start and it happens around your jaw and under your cheekbones and chin, then it is a hormonal related breakout. There is no immediate solution or prevention for this kind of acne. Dermatologists /doctors may want to put you on a certain oral birth control or topical cream medications to treat painful cystic acne. When using the topical cream medication, use a spot treatment instead of applying it all over the skin area. Overuse may cause irritation and over-drying of the healthy skin area.
How to alleviate the pain and redness at home?
Cucumber: Put cucumbers in the refrigerator and let them
cool. When there is pain or discomfort, slice some and apply it to the affected area. This will soothe the area and the redness will also diminish greatly. You should be consuming a lot of water, so add slices of cucumber to your everyday water. If you have left over water from your day, rinse your face with it.
Tea Tree Oil: This is natural antiseptic which will kill the bacteria and clean the area softly. Have some of this handy in your skin care cabinet.
How to cover it up with makeup?
The ideal situation would be to leave your skin makeup-free when the breakouts are happening. However, life happens! Work, school, meetings, etc. cannot be stopped, and showing the breakouts to the world may not contribute to achieving selfconfidence and success. Here is a way to conceal them without aggravating the area too much:
First of all, purchase an oil-free concealer. We do not need to add oils which may lead to clogged pores. Also, make sure it is of the same shade as your skin tone. We definitely do not want to highlight your blemishes with a lighter shade. If the area is too red, get a green concealer. Yes, a green one! This is considered a corrector used for people who suffer from rosacea. This corrector will cancel the redness caused by irritation. Use it only as a spot treatment. Your foundation should also be oilfree and lightweight. Use a very thin layer to even out your skin if needed. I prefer to use a powder foundation on these “special” days to even out my skin and get the concealing work done during the rough days.
IT’S THE MOST MAGICAL TIME OF THE YEAR! With fun-filled seasonal activities, holiday décor and great rates on vacation packages, it’s the most magical time to visit Walt Disney World Resort. So get together for some Disney holiday cheer.

Remove your makeup thoroughly with a good cleanser before going to bed, apply toner and then moisturize. Do not sleep with your makeup on please! As always, if your body is undergoing changes and your skin is changing constantly, make sure you are consulting with your doctor. Your body may be trying to tell you to pay close attention to these changes.

Trick or Treat
Six Grown-Up Sources of Halloween Costume Inspirations
in Style
By: Michelle L. Shirk, J.D. Who says kids get to have all the fun on Halloween? This October, some adults will voluntarily don costumes to pass out candy on the year’s spookiest night, while others will find themselves dragged kicking and screaming to a “costumes required” event. Whichever group you fall into, a little advance preparation is necessary to ensure you don’t find yourself spending $40.00 on whatever generic, cheaply made costume that is left on the rack on October 31st. Below, find six hints to help you come up with a costume guaranteed to be appreciated by your friends, neighbors, kids and/or fellow party guests.
1. Go Retro.
While 1950’s poodle skirts are a dime a dozen, add some zip to an old school costume by choosing a specific toy, movie, or other icon from your own childhood as a point of reference. Depending on your age, you may identify with Pac-Man, Molly Ringwald (“Pretty in Pink” style), a Cabbage Patch doll or Mr. Potato Head. As a child of the late 80‘s/early 90‘s, I celebrated one Halloween season dressed as Lisa Frank, complete with a rainbow print top, branded dolphin notebook and plenty of stickers. Need ideas? Check out the episode summaries for VH1’s excellent “I Love the [70’s, 80’s, 90’s]” series at www.vh1.com for a healthy dose of nostalgia. 12
October 2014 | SASSY
2. Scan Your Home for Real World Objects. If you’re dealing with a small budget or general lack of enthusiasm, you may be able to whip up a free, one-of-a-kind costume using materials from around your home. A couple of throw pillows and a coaster or two form the makings of a sofa costume, while a blue shirt and some empty milk containers might convert you into a believable recycling bin. One year I received rave reviews for my “Christmas tree” costume, which consisted of a green top and brown pants adorned with actual holiday decorations.
3. Flip Channels for Inspiration. Take a quick scan of your cable
directory for tons of costume ideas. Judge Judy, a Dance Mom, a “Say Yes to the Dress” bride . . . the possibilities are endless! If you find yourself inspired by a more obscure show or character, label yourself with a name tag or sign to ensure others are able to get in on the joke.
4. Try Out an Alternate Career Path. Mentally run through the
occupations of those around you. A nurse, restaurant server or scuba instructor in your circle may be willing to loan you their gear for an instant costume. If you have to fork out some money, it can be cheaper to buy “real” gear than a costume version of the same stuff. I once picked up a real ballerina outfit from a dance supply company for just $26.00!
5. Show Your Team Spirit.
For those of you who still aren’t convinced an elaborate costume is the best way to go, a sports-based costume may be your easiest way out. By raiding your closet or local sporting goods store you can put together a basic cheerleader, football player, super fan or other sporty costume. Local high schools, colleges, professional sports teams and the Olympics all make solid sources of athletic inspiration.
6. Be a Part of the Gang.
One creative costume is funny, but multiple creative costumes are even funnier. Get together with your family members or friends and brainstorm people and things that come in groups. Whether you go as the Muppets, the Golden Girls, the cast of “Saved by the Bell” or a box of crayons, a well-organized group costume guarantees a big impact.
Hopefully this list will inspire you to don your best costume yet in 2014. Be creative, have fun and enjoy a Happy Halloween! SASSY | October 2014

How To
Gain Skills While
Working By: Marianne C. Weesner
W
hen you graduate college and get your first job, you realize how much more there is out there you did not learn. Maybe you want to learn more skills in order to get a different job or one that you are more passionate about. Luckily for most of you, learning something new is just a click away or as simple as joining a notfor-profit. To help in your quest of acquiring new
skills, here are some ideas:
Join a local not-for-profit
Since many not-for-profit organizations are volunteerbased, a not-for-profit is a wonderful place to learn new skills. Often times, you will be asked to do things you have never done before. Maybe it is to help plan the logistics of an event, budget an event or create a social media strategy to promote an event. Whatever it may be, you will be able to acquire new skills and do something that has a positive impact on your community.
Visit www.skillshare.com
Skillshare provides a variety of classes from learning how to design a website to editing films. The catch to this site is that you either have to become a member to get most classes for free or pay for each class individually. The membership is $9.95, but they do offer a trial period. If you opt to pay just for the classes you are interested in, some classes are $20 or more depending on the instructor. An advantage about Skillshare is that often class projects are assigned, and you will get feedback from your instructor and peers. Completing the projects provides you something tangible to show in a portfolio while honing your presentation skills. 14
October 2014 | SASSY
Visit www.lynda.com
Lynda.com is another online website that provides an abundance of classes. If you are trying to learn a software program like Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Excel, there are a series of classes depending upon your experience level. If you are still one to two years out of college, you may have access to Lynda.com from your college’s website. If this is not an option for you, then you will have to acquire a membership from lynda.com, which can be from $25 to $375 depending on the membership package you decide.
Visit www.coursera.org
If you are looking to brush up on some math skills, learn some programming language or just take a few classes to expand your horizons, coursera.org is a wonderful place to do so. Coursera.org is completely free.
Make Google your friend
Whatever skill you are trying to acquire, perform a search on Google. You may be able to find tutorials on YouTube for free or other websites at no cost to you.
There are plenty of ways to learn new skills. The first step is just to have a desire to learn something new! New skills help keep your mind curious, perform your job more efficiently and effectively and perhaps pursue a new career. Take the plunge and learn something new! ď Ś SASSY | October 2014

The
Importance of Friendships By: Jessica Haviland

October 2014 | SASSY
L
ife can be crazy with work, kids, volunteering (charities and school functions), cooking, cleaning and so forth. Sometimes squeezing in the downtime to sit and sip on a glass a wine with your besties may feel like a million years away! But, keeping our friendships alive is actually more beneficial than you may think.
Stress Less
As mentioned above, our lives are consistently crazy and the stress levels can sky rocket if we aren’t careful of overbooking ourselves. That’s why scheduling a “Girl’s Night Out” (even if it’s a quiet night indoors) is very important in our lives. Women get together and talk about our struggles and look for insight from each other to learn how to overcome them. We are here for each other to help lift our spirits when we are down. According to a study done at the University of Chicago, people in committed friendships will produce lower levels of stress hormones. So the next time your girls ask you to have a wine night, literally take that moment and whine your problems away!
Higher Self-Esteem
Don’t we all wish we had higher selfesteem? We’re all human and when times get tough it gets difficult to feel positive about ourselves. Surrounding yourself with good friends will help you feel good no matter what the situation you are in. Your friends are here to support your better well being and encourage you to reach your end goals. Shelden Cohen, PhD, a psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University, said those who have a wider social network are more likely to have a higher self-esteem and have more control in their lives and life decisions. Center yourself with friends who have positive energy and reap the benefits in the long run!
Live Longer
According to webmd.com, 22% of those who had a large network of friends outlived those with the fewest. Besides helping you stress less and boost up your self-esteem, friends will also encourage healthy habits and discourage unhealthy ones. True friends tell you exactly what you NEED to hear not what you WANT to hear. Pick up a hobby or a yoga class that all of you can do each week. Enjoy life to its fullest with the ones you love and care about. The more you do it, the chances are there will be many more to come.
Five Fun Girls Night-In Ideas: Host a Wine Tasting Party: You can host or one of your friends where each person brings a bottle of their favorite wine for everyone to try. Spa Night: Come up with DIY facial masks and hair treatments. You may even get a few good laughs in! Chefs in the Kitchen: Chocolate addict? Get a group of girls together and whip up some brownies, puppy chow or whatever will ruin your diet for the rest of the month! Movie Marathon: Love story movies may not be what’s on your TV at home but can certainly be on during Girls Night-In. Watch something new or relive the good ole days and watch movies that all of you remember back in high school.
Feeling Secure
One of the most important things that friends contribute to your life is the feeling of security. This combines everything into one. Being close to your family is an amazing feeling that we should all cherish but there are just some things we shouldn’t share with all of them. That’s where your friends take play! Your friends are here to help you through life struggles, have an outsider’s point of view and help direct you towards the right path. A good friend never wants to see you hurt or upset. With a well-rounded group of friends, they are there to help you overcome obstacles which in return makes it easier for you to make decisions when you have the security blanket wrapped around you (a.k.a. your friends). Friendships take work just like any other relationship you will encounter throughout your lifetime. When life gets rough or if you just need a simple day away, you can always rely on your friends to help you escape. Fitting time into your schedule to meet up with your besties isn’t only to just “catch up” but simply good for your overall health and wellness. The next time when you have a moment to breath, call your girls and plan a day when all of you can enjoy a moment of pure bliss!

here isn’t much worse than having a very sick or injured child. You feel helpless, frustrated and sometimes absolutely out-of-control,” says Betsy Tavernier, a Bristol mom who has spent a great deal of time in hospitals all over country since her son was three years old. Circumstances like hers are overwhelming for the child and the family. Where do you go from here? How can you be there for your child during their time in need? How do you financially get through? Where do you stay when you don’t want to leave your child’s side even for a minute?
The Ronald McDonald House Charities
In Michiana, we are lucky to have The Ronald McDonald House Charities to help assist parents whose child is seriously ill or injured and receiving medical care at Memorial Children’s Hospital. “The hospital takes care of the children and the volunteers at The Ronald McDonald House Charities are here to take care of the families,” Linda Marker, original volunteer and a marketing committee board member, said. “We have served 3,000 families in just the last year alone. There is a great need in our community.” During these stressful times in the families’ lives, the RMHC provides them with a comfortable place to stay while their child is in the hospital, act as an emotional support system and they also help re-establish a sense of control or responsibility through a cooperative and supportive atmosphere. “We offer all of our services free of charge for families that are need to use the Family Room at Memorial,” said Linda.

Teens Making An Impact
Besides the RMHC volunteers and board members, a young group of students have come together and formed an RMHC Teen Board. This board is made up of 50 students representing 17 local schools in Michiana. “These students put on big events throughout the year,” Linda said. “They learn how to run a board and how to fundraise. So far they have raised $60,000 in the past three years.” How do these teens help spread the word? The Teen Board collects teddy bears for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Children’s Hospital, participates in the Halloween Trick-or-Treat at the hospital, hosts book drives, toy drives, fundraisers and so much more! “(One of ) the biggest events for the Teen Board is the Family Room Fun Day,” Julia Winters, Teen Board President, said. “By buying a ticket, members from the community can bowl, gokart and putt-putt all day, all while benefitting the RMHC Family Room. There are chances for raffles and other exciting things at this event.”
Each teen on the board has a strong drive to bring more awareness to the RMHC and help the families that are in need. “I found out about the Ronald McDonald Family Room in elementary school at a friend’s party,” Julia recalls. “We had a fun scavenger hunt around a neighborhood to get as many needed household items as we could for the Family Room. In middle school, I found out more about the Teen Board and how I could become directly involved.” Taylor Creighton, the Events Coordinator for the Teen Board, had a rather different experience with the RMHC. “I was exposed to Ronald McDonald House Charities at a young age,” she said. “My family was a guest at the Ronald McDonald House while my brother was a patient at Riley Hospital.” And, not only did Taylor and her family experience RMHC, her late grandfather was a strong supporter. “He always had a special place in his heart for these families,” she said.

Never Underestimate
As these teens prove that they can too make a difference in the community, their willingness to accomplish more is never ending. “We try to help as many families as we can to use the facilities the Family Room has to offer,” Julia said. “It is remarkable how high school students from all around the area can come together to make an impact on our community. There aren’t always many opportunities for teens to be a big part of a global organization. Being involved with a Teen Board that is part of such a wellknown organization is incredible.” Each Teen Board Member is required to commit to one year of service, attend scheduled meetings, help with at least three fundraising and volunteer activities and encouraged to contact various groups in their schools and communities. It shows just how committed these board members certainly are by the success of their fundraisers. “The largest accomplishment I have been a part of was last year’s Art with a Heart fundraiser.” Taylor said. “It was rewarding to witness many of the community high schools come together for a greater cause. The art pieces that were donated and sold at the event were all done by local students.” Even though Julia, Taylor and the rest of the Teen Board has made a major impact on the Ronald McDonald Family Room and the community, in return, the RMHC has made an impact on them as well. “The Ronald McDonald Family Room did not exist when I was a baby,” Julia said. “I had to be transferred to another hospital after my birth. But, I can feel the compassion for the families that use the facility because I know that if it was offered when I was born, my family would have benefitted from it as well. I am giving back to something that I could have been a part of.” As for Taylor and her family, they experienced the support from the FAMILY Room and the RMHC and they know how important this organization truly is to our community. “It has put us in touch with the reality that there are families that are facing critical illnesses and injuries every day,” she said. “If we are able to brighten one moment of their day, then we should.”
How To Get Your Teen Involved In The Ronald McDonald House Charities Qualifications: • Students from 7th Grade to 12th grade may apply • Responsible • Great communication skills • Accepting of people of all races, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation and disabilities If your teen is interested in participating in the RMHC, you can stop by the Ronald McDonald Room in Memorial Hospital and pick up an application or fill out the form online at www.rmhcmichiana.org and click on “Teen Board.” There are also events throughout the year that your teen can participate in without having to be a board member. Those events are listed on the website as well.
As mothers, community members and active charity supporters, we should stand proud next to our children’s generations. What they are accomplishing at such a young age is what we all hope to accomplish in our lifetime. “I am really proud of how they are spreading the word on volunteering and sharing their passion with the community,” Linda said. And you should be proud too!

Maximize Your Buddy Workouts
By: Lara West
T
here are several reasons why it’s a good idea to have a workout partner. You’ll have someone to help push you through the pain. You’ll have a reason to schedule in sessions, and have someone to hold you accountable when you want to use the smallest excuse to cancel. The time will go by faster and be more enjoyable, and you’ll have someone by your side (who you know understands the hard work you put in) to celebrate your successes with as they happen. Before you can celebrate, you need to find the right partner, and this can be easier said than done. In fact, you may need more than one partner, or you might have to go through several partners before you find one that has similar goals, intensity level and schedule as you. (Remember, your best friend may not be the best workout partner for you.) Now you’ve done your due diligence and found a work out buddy that understands your goals. Things have been great for the past few months, but recently you’ve noticed that your trusty partner is beginning to flake out on you. How do you build back their motivation, and keep yourself going at the same time?
Partner Bodyweight Exercises:
1.
Chair Squat: Stand back to back with elbows linked. With you backs pressed together, walk your feet forward slowly until you are in the sitting position. Hold for three breaths, and return to standing position.
2.
Plank & Push: One partner holds the planking position while the other does pushups- resting their feet on the planking partners back.
3.
Joint Lunge: Standing face-to-face, press your palms against your partners. One will step into a backward lunge while the other steps into a forward lunge. Do the number of reps desired and switch lunge directions.
20
October 2014 | SASSY
It really depends on the root cause of why their motivation is slipping away, but there are a few ways to approach your buddy and tackle the problem head on: Talk to them before a few absences here-and-there becomes a complete disappearing act. I’d suggest a coffee date in a quaint local shop where you can easily talk. Let your partner know that your workouts aren’t as much fun without them and you just want to make sure the schedule still works for them, if the regimen needs to be shaken up a bit, or if there is something else that needs to be changed. Journal both of your fitness progress and set goals with fun rewards for beating them. You can make a fancy chart or just use a notebook. Record your times for things like running the mile and squatting, the number of pull ups or reps for a certain exercise. Keeping an exercise journal is great for keeping up motivation, and you can use it as a documented visual to confirm that you both are getting healthier and need to keep going.
Revise your goals regularly. Have a creative long-term goal to strive for, such as climbing a mountain or completing a 5K, and then set attainable goals to “baby step” your way to success. No goal is too small to be celebrated, so reward yourself and your partner. Give them a motivating gift that they’ll appreciate. This can be new gym gear, such as a new gym bag, water bottle or a sweat towel with their name on it. It can also be a poster or sign with a unique quote or inspiring poem they can put up to remind them that they can achieve their fitness goals with consistent work. Evaluate yourself. Maybe the problem is not something your partner can fix, because the problem is you. Take a minute to consider your own workout behavior. Are you consistently late or panting to end sessions early? Do you hound her to push too much, or do you hold her back when she is ready to do more? When she comes in exhausted and performs poorly are you willing to tell her she should come back rested and ready tomorrow so she doesn’t hurt herself (or you, if being spotted)? There is only so much you can do to help restore your partner’s motivation and desire to work. It’s possible that you won’t be able to save your workout partnership for a reason that is outside of your control. Sometimes the only thing you can do is consider them an occasional gym buddy, and try finding another workout partner who can complement and buildup your workout in the gym.
“You may need more than one partner, before you find one that has similar goals, intensity level and schedule as you.”

Fall Into Fitness By: Abbi Pollyea
Inspired by the kick-off to fall sports, I decided to incorporate some good oldfashioned sports conditioning into my routine. The cardio segment of this workout will not only boost your heart rate, but will also bring back memories of childhood athletic practices. The football turf that used to be a part of the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, is the perfect place to perform this series. If this venue is not convenient, use any public soccer or football field in your community. I recommend 2 to 3 pound ankle weights, but free weights up to 5 pounds can also be used for the upper body segment. The use of a yoga mat is also encouraged for the sculpting portion of this program. Remember, less weight plus more repetition equals a lean physique. Heavy weights with fewer reps can create bulk on certain body types. Have fun!
"Cardio Killers"
On your mark.....get set......go! Start at the furthest line out, run as fast as you can to the closest yard line, make sure you touch the line with your hand. Return to start, and then run to the second line out, tag it and then sprint back to start. Repeat until all yard lines or field marks have been tagged, going further out with each one. Keep a sprint, or your fastest pace throughout. Heart rate should be up and legs should feel worked upon completion. Photos: Abbi Pollyea
2. "PliĂŠ' with Biceps"
1. "Warrior Kickbacks"
This exercise is fantastic because it incorporates multiple muscle groups. Triceps, gluteals of raised leg and core muscles are all being utilized. Balance on right leg to begin. Lift left leg with gluteals as high as possible (keeping knee facing down) and reach arms behind you, also lifting them as high as possible. Maintain balance, by using core, bend and then straighten elbows while keeping upper arm still, (this is one rep). Complete 20 to 30 reps and then repeat on the other side. To modify, keep lifted leg down and slightly behind. Important: Do not arch your low back. 22
October 2014 | SASSY
Another great exercise that includes more than one muscle group. Biceps, anterior deltoids (front of shoulders), and inner thighs will be our primary targets in performing this exercise. Begin in a wide stance, legs should be wider than shoulders and hips are turned out. Once balance is obtained, lift heels off of the ground about 1 inch. Bring arms straight out from shoulders and bend them 90 degrees. Straighten both arms and legs simultaneously (arms reach to sky) and then return to start to complete one rep. Complete 20 to 30 reps. To modify, keep heels down. To intensify, stay in pliĂŠ after reps are completed, and pulse arms up from start position about one inch for 20 reps. Feel the burn! Important: keep spine straight throughout, do not lean forward or arch low back.
4. "Seated Twist" 3. "Booty Sculpt Plus"
I highly recommend this amazing exercise! It never fails to deliver results. I recommend using ankle weights for added intensity, but feel free to go without. The muscle groups that will be worked here are the gluteals, obliques and pectorals (chest). Begin on all 4s in a quadruped position. Lift the right leg behind with a slightly rotated hip, squeeze seat muscle completely. Next, bring the right leg forward with a bent knee to connect right knee with right elbow. Elbows will bend in a push up style when the knee and elbow come together, elbows will straighten when the leg returns to start. (one rep). Begin with 10 to 15 reps, work toward 40 reps. Repeat on the other side
This is an elegant exercise, so channel your inner ballerina to maintain good form throughout. If a dancer-like body is what is coveted, then maintain good posture and form while exercising. Obliques, rectus abdominis (6 pack muscle) and deltoids (shoulders) will all be challenged here. Begin in a seated position with legs extended and together. Lean torso back away from legs while tucking pelvis under. Bring arms up to chest level and create a beach-ball size shape by bringing fingertips together. Keep tone in arms throughout, elbows should point out to side, not down. Keeping legs still, twist upper body to right, return to center, then twist upper body to left, return to center to complete one rep. Perform 20-30 reps. To modify, bend knees. To intensify, add hand weights.
5. "Pilates Teaser"
This is an empowering exercise! There is always a sense of victory upon its completion. Muscle groups worked here are rectus abdominis (6 pack), postural muscles, and inner thighs. Begin in a supine position, arms reaching up and legs long out in front. Inhale and reach arms toward the sky as you lift head and shoulders off the ground. Exhale and tuck pelvis under, then lift legs up into the air to create a "V" position. Pelvis will remain tucked, or posterior throughout. Inhale and begin to roll the upper body back to start, keeping arms high, exhale and return legs to ground once mid-back is down. This completes one rep. Perform 3 to 5 reps. To modify, keep feet on the ground with knees bent. To intensify, keep legs in the air throughout the reps.

6. "Dancer Pose"
To finish, a good stretch is encouraged. Standing on the right leg, hold the outside of the left ankle with the left hand. Really go for the stretch here, being careful not to arch your low back. The stretch should be felt in front of the left shoulder, in the front of the left thigh and in the right hamstring. Hold the stretch for 5 deep breath sets (inhale and exhale) and then switch sides. To modify, use a wall to help maintain balance. ď Ś SASSY | October 2014

Space Solutions By: Andrew Skipper
Mirror, Mirror On The Wall Mirrors are an easy and affordable way to increase the perception of space in a small room. If you can hang one across from a window, it opens up the room and creates a sense of another window. Mirrors also add light and dimension, making tight spaces feel larger.
Are you stumped when it comes to decorating a small room? Well, have no fear because SASSY Magazine is here and we're giving away many decorator secrets on how to deal with small spaces in your home.
Underfoot
Don’t go too little when it comes to area rugs. When selecting a rug to anchor a seating group, it should at least be large enough for the front feet of each piece of furniture to rest on. In the dining room, you want to be able to back your chairs up completely from the table and still have all four legs of each chair on the rug. If you use a lot of other patterns in your room, like on the sofa or on curtains, go for a simple rug. Conversely, if your window treatments and furniture are pretty plain, choose a rug with some personality!
Storage Always look for pieces that incorporate storage, that way everything can have a home. Desks that close are wonderful additions to small rooms because they offer a hiding spot for clutter but also a flat work surface when opened. Benches and ottomans with storage can hold extra blankets, remote controls or magazines. The more clutter you can put away, the more visually expansive your room will feel.
Color
It’s true that lighter colors can make a small space feel larger. However, deep dark colors can do the same thing! By painting all the walls in a small room a dark color, the walls visually receded and the space feels intimate and cozy. Just be sure to have plenty of soft lighting such as table lamps and wall sconces.
24
October 2014 | SASSY
Curtains
Curtains can really add texture and softness to a space. Frame a window in vibrant panels and you have instant drama. If you’re having them made, incorporate a large hem—then you can take them to your next place and let that hem out to accommodate higher ceilings. In a small space, mount curtain rods as close to the ceiling as possible to draw the eye up.
Lighting Every room needs more than one source of lighting, but this is especially the case in small rooms. A combination of overhead lighting, table and floor lamps, wall sconces and natural light from a window or sky light will help the space feel inviting.
See Through
Opt for a coffee table that isn’t visually heavy. Perhaps something made of wire mesh or glass or Lucite. This will allow the eye to travel and won’t obstruct sight lines.
Unify
Do the entire room in the same fabric pattern. Walls, curtains, upholstery and lampshades can all be made in the same pattern such as toile or a floral. Even leopard print would be a daring statement! One print done everywhere creates a cohesive, enveloping room and will be a show stopper.
Shine Bright Paint the ceiling high gloss or have it lacquered. The reflective surface will make the entire room shine and draw the eye up, creating the illusion of more space.
Float
Keep It Clean
Perhaps the easiest and most cost effective way to enhance a small space is to keep it clean and tidy. Consistently removing clutter and wiping down surfaces will help your room to feel fresh and less closed-in.
Edit
If you’re feeling cramped in your space, take an inventory of everything that is in the room. From the furniture to the accessories— what can you live without? Do you really need that extra magazine rack? Are there too many chairs squeezed into one room? Do all of those knick-knacks need to be out at the same time? By editing the items in a space, you will make it feel larger.
If you’re dealing with a small kitchen, consider installing floating shelves rather than upper cabinets. It will create a sense of space and you can display your beautiful serving pieces.
Splurge
You’ve always dreamed of having that $300 a yard fabric? Well in a small space, it won’t take much of it to upholster the walls! Use lush upholstery on furniture and get a fabulous chandelier to hang. There’s nothing like turning a small space into a jewel box.
Connect With Adjoining Rooms
If your small room opens onto another room, consider decorating both spaces in the same style and color palette. It will unify the rooms, creating the illusion of one larger space rather than two broken up spaces. SASSY | October 2014

n this fast-paced, always-on existence, feeling overwhelmed can be a daily, even hourly occurrence. We wear so many hats and juggle multiple roles, all with their own sets of expectations and demands. So what do we do when with feelings of overwhelm? Well, we could follow that sage advice and find our inner happy place. But, let’s face it; even that happy place sometimes fails us.
So, when your inner ocean-retreat just won’t cut it, try these tips: Breathe.
Have you ever heard an exercise instructor say, “Don’t forget to breathe,” and wondered, “Really? We need to be told this?” The truth is that when we are stressed, our breathing is often short and shallow. So, take a few moments to relax your shoulders, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Focus on your breaths instead of your problems, and your body will thank you for the increased oxygen intake.
“Laughter is the best medicine.”
Unplug.
We all have a love-hate relationship with social media, but did you know that it can actually make you less happy? A study by the University of Michigan found that the more adults used Facebook, the worse they felt. By engaging in social media, we subject ourselves to an onslaught of content: some good, some bad. So in your moments of overwhelm, log out. Turn off the notifications and pings. Remove the apps from your phone, if necessary. Disengage and be more intentional about the time you do spend on social media. 26

Single-task.
Many of us spend our days multi-tasking, carrying on conversations with one person, while texting another; caomposing an email, while watching the new email notifications; listening to a conference call, while finishing that spread sheet. While it seems that multi-tasking would be beneficial, it can have adverse affects when we force our brains to jump from task to task at a rapid rate. It can cause our memory to fail and our brains to produce stress hormones. So, instead of trying to accomplish more at once, instead focus on a single task at hand before moving on to the next.
Say no.
Life is busy, especially when we have a full-time job, kids to carpool from school to sports to music lessons, volunteer opportunities, church commitments, oil changes, manicure appointments and more. So just say, “No.” Take a serious look at your calendar and prioritize. Chairing the charity board is great, but not when it comes at the cost of your sanity. Ask yourself if Dakota really needs Mandarin lessons or if Azaria’s life will be less fulfilling if she doesn’t participate in underwater basket weaving. There are unfortunately only 24 hours in a day. Be intentional about how you spend them.

Laugh.
Laughter is the best medicine. According to the Mayo Clinic, laughing can activate and relieve your stress response, soothe tension, improve your immune system, relieve pain, increase personal satisfaction, and more. So when the tension is high, take a moment to laugh. For a quick release, pull up a YouTube video. For a deeper connection, go out with a friend or have a date night with your husband. Stop putting it off and schedule some one-on-one, eye-to-eye, mobile-device-free time together. Who knows? They may be just as stressed as you and need a release, as well.
Take a Vacation.
Can’t find your inner happy place? Than find your real-life one. A recent study by Travel Effect found that 40 percent of employees don’t use all their paid vacation time in a year. Don’t be one of those people. While it can be difficult to schedule time away from the office, it is essential for the wellbeing of your mind to step away for a few days from time to time. With a renewed mind, you’ll be more motivated step back into work. Or, maybe you’ll decide to become a beach bum. Either option will help reduce your feelings over being overwhelmed.

Q:
I recently opened a small service company, offering organizing services primarily for working moms. I started my company with no extra working capital in the bank. I know that’s not the best way to get started in business, but it’s my reality. I know I need to be better at marketing my services. How can I do this effectively on a shoestring budget?
Answer: It’s definitely a great idea to have a budget for marketing, and I realize
that doesn’t always happen. There are ways to grow your business without spending much money. Consider these three vital marketing components: 1. Deliver exceptional value. Note, this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to charge the lowest price. People will pay for the extra value they get, if your service provides something they want or need. Create specific outcomes that you promise through your service, decide what that’s worth, and set your prices accordingly. You can choose to be a price leader -- or choose to be a service leader. It’s your call. You must choose where you want to lead, so your clients clearly see what makes you stand apart from others. 2. Tell your story well and often. Get your elevator pitch down to a succinct science. Have success stories ready at a moment’s notice. Carry around visuals for people to imagine what you can do for them. Be genuinely curious about others, as that leads to you learning more about your market, and may provide an opening for you to talk about your services. Be a relationship builder. Collect stories from your customers and share them.
Q:
I'd like to start a cupcake business with my best friend - everyone warns me that we shouldn't mix friendship with business. Any advice?
Answer: Best friends can make great business
partners, if you have extremely clear commitments from the beginning. Assuming you know each other very well, and if you’re willing to be very honest with yourself, you already have an inkling of what could go wrong. For example, maybe her relationship with time is not the same as yours, and she always shows up late. You must consider whatever it is BEFORE you make an agreement to do business together. The key to this working will be impeccable communication. What I mean here is a true commitment from each of you that you will talk through every issue that arises, at the time it’s occurring. Most business partnerships fall apart due to false expectations, mistaken assumptions, taking things personally or plain old fashioned delusion. The solution to all of this is having the right conversation at the right time.
3. Ask for the business. People are waiting to be asked to buy something. Asking leads to receiving. Ask for the order. Ask for referrals. Ask for feedback. Ask for favors. Asking can prove to be one of the most difficult tasks for entrepreneurs who have not been trained in selling. The art of asking is the one thing that will kill your business, if not mastered.
Sometimes partnerships are formed based on false assumptions about the talents each partner brings to the partnership. This must be clearly communicated from the beginning. It won’t work to form a partnership with her because you hate selling and you assume she doesn’t. You must cover this territory.
Focusing on these three areas will help you to build clientele one at a time, and doing great work will result in a reputation that will lead to more business. Your best case scenario is that your clients begin to refer others to you, and this builds to the point where you can establish the financial resources to put toward larger scale marketing/advertising.
Written agreements are essential, potentially including a “friendship” clause, detailing an exit plan that saves the friendship. If you know you can have these conversations, your partnership will have a fair chance of succeeding. Good luck!.

5 Tips to Consider When Creating Your
By: Jillian Koeneman

our logo, in the most basic sense, is the simplest visual representation of your business, and it is really important. You’ve heard people talk about branding and creating an identity for your business, and those are also super, super important, but your logo is the first image people will remember. It’s how you’ll be recognized. It’s the foundation of your brand and every other marketing piece will be built around your logo and the feel that your logo evokes. Think about wildly successful business and then think about the logos. Brands such as Target and Nike have iconic, globally recognizable logos. We live in a visual world where more often than not, people judge a book by its cover. In order for your business to thrive fully, your business needs a cover that is simple, memorable and timeless. The task may seem daunting but here are five tips that will help you get started.
Keep it Simple Your logo should be simple. Not overly designed. Not covered in crazy graphic effects. Your business will be using its logo everywhere and it shouldn’t be lost behind in overly intricate design. Remember, you don’t need to tell your whole story with your logo. It should be one unifying thought. 30
October 2014 | SASSY
Color and Type Truly Matter People have emotional responses to colors. There have been studies, classes and books dedicated to the subject of Color Theory. It’s science. Be sure to do some research (as well as some soul searching) to really figure out which color(s) best represent your brand and appeal to your audience. The same goes for your fonts. Be sure to avoid overly used fonts and test out a lot of different options in order to find which works best. San serif, and serif fonts tend to be the most readable when resized.
Size Matters Typically logos should be readable as small as one inch! So be sure to not only shrink your image, but also to enlarge it to make sure it works. For this, we suggest creating vector images (made of lines) which are most easily resized and printed.
Avoid Fads You want your logo to withstand the test of time, right? Avoid designing with fads in mind that may date your logo.
Don’t Be Afraid of Feedback! Ask a few customers. Ask a fellow business owner. Any feedback, as long as it’s constructive will help. Someone may have an insight that you may have over looked, a concern you didn’t recognize or some seriously empowering praise for your design. Logo development is a thoroughly invigorating and interesting creative process. In most cases, you will need to empower a graphic designer who is well versed in Adobe Illustrator to bring your vision to life. Don’t rush it, do your research, find the right graphic design partner, and above all else - listen to your gut. How to Be a Stay-At-Home Mom
without Affecting Your
Career Long-Term
S
By: Allison Boelcke
tarting a family can shift the priorities of even the most dedicated career woman. Even if you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that trading your outside job to become a full-time stayat-home mom is the right choice for your family, you may be concerned about the long-term ramifications to your career. What happens if/when you decide to reenter the workforce after being home for an extended period of time? If you completely check out of your industry for years, it may be difficult to get hired again once you’re ready to go back to work.
Use these tips to be a stay-at-home mom and still have the foundation in place to transition back into the workforce in the future:
Keep Your Network Alive
Once you’ve made the decision to quit your job to be a stay-athome mom, you may be mentally checked out and itching to leave. However, it’s imperative to leave on as good of terms as possible. Collect the contact information of the colleagues you worked most closely with and keep your promise of staying in touch periodically. Even if your plan is to stay at home for years or without an end date in mind, staying connected to former colleagues can have many benefits. Simply having adult conversation about your industry can be a welcoming break from being in “mommy mode” and give you just enough interaction to prevent feeling out of the loop. It’s always good to have positive references for future job hunting - plus your contacts may be able to give you tips of recommendations for job opportunities when you are ready to start your career back up.

Stay Engaged in Your Industry
The reason that many women are concerned about putting their careers on hold is that employers won’t want to hire them in the future. Unfortunately, these concerns can be valid, but it’s often mainly because employers may think you’re simply not up to date about any changes to your industry. Address these potential issues head-on by keeping a toe in the happenings of your industry: periodically check out industry articles, participate in LinkedIn discussions, or even attend industry events once in a while if you can swing it. You’ll be knowledgeable about any changes in the industry that could affect your career in the future (such as the software you’re most experienced in becoming obsolete) and be prepared to handle them when you’re ready to get back into the job search.
Never Stop Learning
Just because you’re out of the workforce in the traditional sense doesn’t mean you have to have glaring gaps on your resume. If you’re going to want to transition back into the workforce at some point, it is essential to show that you’ve kept your skills fresh. Take online continuing education classes, keep any professional licenses renewed or even just go to an industry training seminar every so often. Do what is necessary for your particular industry to demonstrate to potential future employers that your skills are as updated as ever.
Consider Freelance or Contract Work
Prepare for chills and thrills as South Bend Civic Theatre presents its first ever Haunted House!
Maintain the best of both worlds and pursue work on a freelance or contract basis. This type of short-term work is becoming more popular with employers who may not have the budget for fulltime workers. This may not be possible for all family situations or professions, but if you are able to work at home on projects sometimes, your career will progress on your own terms. Reach out to any contacts to let them know you’re open to freelance or contract work and what you have to offer. For less flexible positions and industries, temporary work may be a better option. If you have the childcare available, filling in for someone who’s on vacation for a few days can give you valuable networking opportunities and experience to put on your resume during your time as a stay-at-home mom. Choosing to be a stay-at-home mom does not have to be damaging to your career. The most important factor is being able to show future employers that you’ve kept your skills sharp and passion alive during your time away from the full-time workforce. Be strategic but flexible with your career plan and you’ll really be able to have it all!
“Collect the contact information of the colleagues you worked most closely with and keep your promise of staying in touch periodically.”

Business Forum This Month's Question:
S
“I have been a sales representative for my place of employment for almost five years. In the past, I have successfully met each sales goal personally and professionally but lately I feel as if I have plateaued. How can I raise my sale numbers and keep motivated?”
ales careers have many facets to them. Competition and the overall economy have a strong impact on success in sales. It is important to be useful to your customer and having a strong relationship with them will provide the best possible outcomes for the customer and yourself. That being said, not everything will always go perfectly and according to plan. I have found that the best way to get out of a rut is to take a step back and look at the customers as a whole. Thinking critically about what you are doing on a day-to-day basis can help you uncover things that could be done differently. It’s important to consider if what you are doing right now is not working then it is necessary to change up your process. The best start is to logically think about all the opportunities you have in your sales territory. This will give you a bird’s eye view on your market and the larger scale thinking will help you determine what you have to work with. After this analysis, it is best to target a handful of customers and determine what each one requires. This includes specifically considering each company, each contact and determining what you can bring to the table to make improvements.

Business is not given for any reason; it is earned because you have something different and better than they currently have. This could be a wide variety of reasons, some of which might be service, availability or price. Reeling the main focus down to five opportunities can help you direct your efforts and get back on the road to success. Focus strongly on the success you want to have with those five customers and don’t give up without trying every possible solution. Once you have given it your all, reevaluate your success. If your personal judgment tells you an opportunity is lost, drop that one and add another to the mix. But, remember to keep your opportunities at an acceptable level, it is better to follow through and be successful with a few customers than it is to have so many that they are unhappy. The rule of a handful of opportunities should be used over and over again, after you have landed the business and got everything up and running, you can move to the next one. The most important goal in sales is to produce a profit for the company you work for and that can only be done if you have a good process and the drive to succeed.

SPA Women’s Ministry Homes 8th Annual 5K Walk “The Walk” & Run There was plenty of walking, running and even some dancing at SPA Women’s Ministry Homes’ 8th Annual 5K Walk “the Walk” & Run on August 24th! This high energy, family friendly event took place at Island Park in Elkhart where over 125 community members came out to support the ministry. Because of the generosity of churches, businesses and individuals, SPA raised nearly $11,000, 100% of which is being used to sponsor women receiving residential treatment services for life controlling issues such as domestic violence and substance abuse. Make no mistake; while the company was friendly, the competition was fierce! As a timed run, seasoned runners battled it out to the end vying for the chance to gloat about their victory, while also receiving grand prizes - compliments of SPA’s sponsors. Walk “the Walk” & Run presents a wonderful opportunity for men, women and children to join a community of people who support SPA’s Christcentered mission and who seek ways to “walk the walk” in their daily lives. As the only residential treatment provider in Elkhart County for women experiencing issues of substance abuse, SPA would like next year’s event to double in size, bringing in more walkers, runners and sponsors in order to support the sustainability of the ministry. Sandra Bontrager, Executive Director, thanks the community for 16 years of support, encouragement and prayers and looks forward to seeing everyone again next August! United Cancer’s 6th Annual
United for Fashion How do you know what fashions are hot this fall? If you attended United Cancer’s Fashion show and luncheon, you would have the inside track! Over 200 fashion mavens packed the halls of Elcona Country Club on September 24th for this charity fundraiser benefiting local cancer patients. Hosted by Danny Reynolds of Stephenson’s and Traci Capellman of Fox 28, spectators were treated to an array of fall colors and hot new looks. Most of the models were cancer survivors. The star of the show was two-year-old Lucca Miller, who has spent most of her life in cancer treatment including chemotherapy, radiation and two surgeries. Thankfully, Lucca is now cancer free and a vivacious, precocious little girl! One of the absolute joys of childhood is the ability to sleep anywhere, even for her debut on the fashion runway. United Cancer was founded in Elkhart County in 1958, and is not a branch office of a national organization. The large national organizations usually raises money for research or education, but United Cancer’s mission is to provide hands-on help to local cancer patients. United Cancer recognizes that newly diagnosed cancer patients are emotionally overwhelmed, so the agency’s caring staff helps the patient’s plan for their time in treatment, including understanding their diagnosis and treatment plan, maximizing their insurance coverage, considering alternative sources of income and family dynamics, because the cancer diagnosis affects the whole family. Because the vast majority of United Cancer’s clients have never asked a nonprofit organization for help before, they tend to be uneducated about the community services that may help them. United Cancer frequently refers cancer patients to other places for help, and in 2014 will distribute $100,000, usually helping cancer patients pay for treatment, supplies and medicine. United for Fashion is an important part of United Cancer’s fundraising, raising over $57,000! United Cancer wants to thank our excellent planning committee, the beautiful models, all the wonderful attendees, everyone at Stephenson’s in Elkhart, Fox 28 and Elcona Country Club. Mark your calendar for the last week in September 2015, to be a part of the 7th Annual United for Fashion! Photos: Paul Milnes SASSY | October 2014

“A Dazzling Evening of ‘Men in Kilts’” Supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Michiana On September 18th, The Ronald McDonald House of Michiana had their largest fundraising event of the year, McDazzle. “A Dazzling Evening of ‘Men in Kilts’” at Gillespie Conference Center at the Hilton Garden Inn in South Bend, was the 5th celebration of the Men in Kilts fundraiser honoring Dr. Jim Harris and Mr. David Sparks. Those two men have dedicated a great deal of their lives to Men in Kilts starting from the idea to the implementation over the last four years. Nine brave men showed their true fashion by wearing one of a kind kilts to help raise money for over 3,000 families of ill and injured children who use the services of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana. With their stunning legs on display and their pride on the line, Matt Zimmerman won the overall award of King in Kilts. Matt raised the most funds this year exceeding $100,000 from his fundraising efforts. His initiative and drive to help support the RMHC has made Men in Kilts history. Throughout this dazzling evening, attendees were able to participate in a silent auction. There were fantastic live and silent auction items which included a Saturday Night Live Trip, Dean Locks artwork, Mirror Wine and so much more! Biddings on several items that were donated could be done through your phone via text message. Ronald McDonald House Charities support struggling families who have children in Newborn Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Pediatric care. With the hospital taking great care of the children, RMHC are here to help and support the families involved by providing them with the comforts of home so they can be near their children. But, the help doesn’t stop at RMHC. You can help by becoming a Ronald McDonald Family Room Volunteer, Special Event Volunteer, becoming a Red Shoe Crew member, Cart with a Heart, donations and so much more. American Heart Association Elkhart & St. Joseph County Heart/Stroke Walk & 5K The American Heart Association was building a healthier Michiana one walk at a time with two events this fall, the Elkhart County and St. Joseph County Heart/Stroke Walk & 5K Run. Both non-competitive, one-three mile walk and 5K run raises funds to support heart disease and stroke research and programs in the Michiana region. Funds are raised by companies and community teams throughout the summer and culminate with the walk. The community raises more than $100,000 annually between both walks and the funds are invested in the counties each year to support education, advocacy, research and community outreach. Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the country’s number one and number four killers. Brisk walking for as little as 30 minutes a day has proven health benefits, such as providing increased energy and circulation, as well as reduced risk of heart disease. The Heart Walk is designed to help participants understand this critical message, join with others and generate a renewed commitment to heart-healthy living through walking.
Shelley Rody, Account Executive, Marketing Department, at Beacon Health System and the Elkhart County Heart Walk Chair led the organizational and recruitment efforts by calling on hundreds of area volunteers, survivors, walkers and business leaders to step up to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Rody, who lost her younger sister to a sudden heart attack and has other immediate family members affected by heart and vascular disease, knows firsthand the importance of the American Heart Association's mission. “It’s essential for a lot of people to understand that heart disease and stroke can strike at any age and the goal of the heart walk is to bring more awareness and save lives. The only way we can fight the number one and number four killer of all Americans is to educate individuals,” said Rody. “These events provide an educational aspect by incorporating some fun and raising lifesaving funds for research.” To learn more or to get involved in Michiana visit michianaheartwalk.com or call (574) 274-1783.
