Overwhelmed
Work Love and Play When No One Has the Time By Brigid Shulte
Reviewed By: Linda Hickman, Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library
SASSY Book
Picks
What’s your typical day like? Do you always feel overloaded with demands from work, spouse, kids and home? Has leisure time become a “someday when I have time” wish? Award-winning journalist and author Brigid Schulte “began her journey to rediscover leisure when she realized her life was becoming ‘like the dream I keep having about trying to run a race wearing ski boots,’” (from cover flyleaf ). In her new book Overwhelmed. Work Love and Play When No One Has the Time, Schulte often becomes her own subject as she investigates how the impact of feeling constantly overwhelmed affects women, men, and our children. The “overwhelm”, as Schulte refers to it, is reflected in adverse changes in our health and even the size of our brains, and skews our perception of ourselves as parents, employees and life partners. Traveling the world and the United States, interviewing time study teams, anthropologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, neurologists and neuroscientists, behavioral experts, and men and women in all walks of life, Schulte presents hard evidence that our present stressful lifestyle needs to change. She offers down-to-earth strategies for change through compassionate stories of men and women who stepped back from the overwhelm to reclaim their lives and health. She shares her own, often hilarious, stories of trying to be everything to everyone and coming up short over and over again, and how she is constantly working on changing herself and her lifestyle. Overwhelmed offers tools to effect change in our frantic lives, to find true leisure time to just be in the moment, and to be better parents, partners and people.

Hot Fall Trends
By: Kathy Friend
It’s In The Details
One hot trend that is fading over into the Fall and Winter fashion trends is fringe. Fringe is everywhere! This “it” detail is seen in everything from shoes, handbags, tops, skirts and dresses. How To Wear It: If you love this look, pick your fringed piece carefully. Where you display fringe is the focal point of your look. Make sure you are asking for focus in a flattering place on your silhouette. If your style is more conservative, but you think you might want to try something fringy, look for a casual handbag with some fringe, maybe in a bright color. Pair this piece with your tailored outfits to add a splash of wow.

Color Of The Rainbow
The color of the year (as I am sure you know) is Radiant Orchid. That purplish/pink hue continues to be prevalent in fashion this season, but might be outdone by the season’s new hues in blue. The two hot blues are called Royal Blue and Bright Cobalt. These blue tones pair very nicely with Radiant Orchid. Balancing orchid on the color spectrum is Aurora Red. This orange-red is a very wearable and a sophisticated tone. How To Wear It: There are two ways to wear bright colors; either as the statement of your outfit, or as a complement. If you are wearing Royal Blue as the statement, for example, balance it against a new neutral like Aluminum grey or Cypress green. This combination will give your look a fresh feel and is more creative than the typical blue and black. If your style preference is to wear bright colors that complement each other, a quick check of a color wheel (just Google “color wheel”) will be a help to you. Colors that appear next to each other or across from each other “go” together.
Pieces To Stay Warm
In all the fashion magazines and websites I’ve been studying, it seems the “it” piece this season will be a shearling coat. Use this cold-weather-must-have to up the style factor in your outerwear. How To Wear It: The very nature of shearling is puffy. When choosing a shearling coat, look for something that has a defined waist. The style-feel of a shearling coat is relaxed and casual, almost “outdoors-y.” If your style is more lady-like, a longer shearling (to the knee) will blend best with your wardrobe. Also look for outerwear accessories to sass up the strong feeling of shearling. Bright scarves and sassy hats will add the extra little something that will make all your friends clamor for their own shearling!

10 Minute Makeup Tips For Fashionable Moms
on the Go
Back–to–School
snuck up rather fast and I bet several of you are still trying to catch up with your daily routines and schedules. This was my first year to experience what a mom of a kindergarten student has to go through every morning before going to work. Combine that with having to attend meetings and looking your best early in the morning is not always an easy task! Even though we want to do everything as fast as we can to meet all of our early morning needs, we still would like to pull off the fall 2014 trends in wardrobe, hair and makeup. The trend which caught the most attention was Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein’s focus on flawless and glowing skin. If you plan your outfit the day before or two days in advance, you will look more put together and professional. Let’s do the same with your makeup look as well.
By: Bethza Seminario
To be able to achieve the tips below, you will need to organize ahead of time for each morning. Give yourself 10 to 15 minutes in the morning to get yourself together. The time invested will be well worth it.
Try these tip to achieve your flawless Ralph Lauren /Calvin Klein skin: • Toner & Moisturizer Have cotton pads ready to apply the
toner all over your face and neck. Then, apply moisturizer with your fingers and palms of your hands in a circular motion all over face and neck. Estimated Time: 30 Seconds
• BB Cream (Beauty Balm ) or Your Favorite Foundation If you are using a liquid foundation, moisten your sponge
• Lip/Cheek Stain This will shorten your time on guessing
how to match your cheeks and lips color. Find a soft rose and/or peach based tone. Smile and apply on the apple of your cheeks by blending and patting softly to give yourself a touch of freshness, youth and health! Now apply to your lips. Estimated Time: 30 Seconds
or brush with a setting spray to give your skin a more sheer finish. If you’re using a powder foundation, mist your face with a setting spray or an aloe based finishing spray after application. BB creams tend to already have a sheer finish on the skin so there is no need to spray anything. Estimated Time: 1 Minute
• Finishing Translucent Powder Apply as little as possible
• Concealer This is a MUST! Try to find one as close as your
get them done once every two weeks by a professional. You do not want to do them yourself in a rush in the morning or on your way to work. Once they are styled, just fill them in with soft strokes, as if you are drawing little hairs. Make sure the color is not very dark. A soft taupe will match even the brunettes. Estimated Time: 2 Minutes
skin tone. There are also duo concealer compacts where you can get two different skin-tone colors of concealers to correct and conceal blemishes and discolorations. This is just a spot treatment step. Do not apply all over your face. Estimated Time: 1 Minute
to keep the fresh-skin-look on your forehead, nose, chin and under your eyes to seal the deal. If you had to correct on multiple places or you have normal-to-oily skin, then apply a small amount all over your face. Estimated Time: 20 Seconds
• Brow Powder/Pencil If you need to shape your brows,
(Please refer back to The Constant Battle Under Our Eyes article in the April issue of SASSY to treat under eye area darkness and puffiness.)
Now that your skin is ready, let’s take a look at the fun trends for this fall. These are inspirations from the runway translated to everyday looks. Here are three looks for three different days:
60’s Versace Inspired Bold Lashes Look
Curl your top lashes to give your eyes that “I’M AWAKE” look! Now, coat the top and bottom lashes with mascara. Don’t be afraid to do three to four coats to achieve the right look. Making a mess? Just have Q-tips or an angled brush to wipe your bottom lash line. Keep your shadows soft and neutral or none to just emphasize the lashes. Estimated Time: 4 Minutes
Christian Dior Color Forward Blue Eyeliner
This year, very bright blue, hot pink and lime green graphic eyeliner tones caught everyone’s attention at the runway. Choose if you want to do the top lash-line liner or bottom waterline liner. If you do top liner, make a soft line as if you were doing it with black eyeliner creating a soft and short wing at the end of your eyes. For either one of these looks, keep your eye shadows very neutral and soft. Then, coat your top and bottom lashes with mascara. Estimated Time: 6 Minutes
Oscar de la Renta Soft Brown/Gray Smokey Eyes This one is the easiest to do, believe or not. First, grab brown pencil eyeliner. Draw a line on your top and bottom lash-line. Now with your finger or smudging brush, blend and soften the color upwards toward your crease. Now, with a light/medium brown matte eye shadow, swipe allover your moveable lid up to your crease. Blend the edges to avoid any harsh lines. Then, grab a pearly shimmery beige tone eye shadow and just apply on the inside corners of your eyes. Now, mascara and you are done! Estimated Time: 5 Minutes The more you practice and have everything ready, the faster and easier these looks will become. Your face will take a total of six minutes maximum. Your eyes will vary depending on experience and detail but a maximum of six minutes.
Reserve and dedicate some time for YOU. You deserve to feel and look your best. SASSY | september 2014

Hottest Nail Trends By: Jessica Haviland
This Season
Stay classy this season with the hottest nail trends that you
can do at home. Visiting the salon weekly or biweekly can be rather costly and time consuming. Keeping up on your nails is a must-do for any successful business woman to tie together her outfits for the week. Get your nails in tip-top shape without breaking the bank with these simple tips:
Prepping Your Nails: Avoid using acetone nail polish when
removing your previous nail color choice. The acetone can do more harm than good to your nails. Shape and cut down your nails to a desired length. Then, use a buffer and buff your nails until smooth.
Basecoat: Many people choose to skip using a basecoat on their nails but later regret it. To avoid yellowing of the nails and your nail polish from chipping, it’s highly recommended to use a basecoat each and every time.
Choosing A Color: Choose your nail color as if you are choosing an
outfit for a day. What colors would match the majority of your outfits? What color would complement your mood? What type of image are you trying to portray? Below are some of the hottest nail colors to wear this season: Dark Red/Maroon: Put your bright red nail polish to the side and bring out your deep reds. Jazz up your French tip manicure by using red instead of white. Gray: Black nail polish can be rather depressing but this season, the runway models were wearing dark to light gray nail polish. Avoid using the gloss topcoat and spice it up a bit and use a matte finish instead. Gold: Gold jewelry isn’t the only statement making a comeback this season! Do a French tip in gold or be bold and paint your whole nail gold.
Finishing Touches: Complete your nail look by either using a high gloss top coat or matte finish. This will help seal your nail color and keep you chip free even longer. 12
september 2014 | SASSY
Reverse French Tip: When I say reverse, I mean completely reverse the French tip. The basic pink and white will always be classic but this year’s hottest trends has been any color on your nails and choose a different color for the French Tip. To reverse the French Tip, paint around the cuticle part of your nail instead of the tip of our nail.

Juicing: What is That?
Carrot-Apple-Ginger Juice For Cleansing or Detoxifying the Body.
Carrots are high in beta carotene, which can help prevent a stroke. Carrot juice also helps with water retention, as it gets rid of excess water in the body. Apples contain a flavonoid known as phloridzin, which promotes bone density. They also contain the K-vitamin, which anchors calcium in the bones and boron, which helps keep bones strong. Apples also contain quercetin, which preserves brain cells, protects from diseases like Alzheimer’s. Ginger slows down the growth of cancerous cells. It can help to digest foods that have a high fat content and to break down proteins. It helps to reduce gas, and is known to cure morning and motion sickness.
J
By: Titilayo Akhigbe
uicing simply means extracting liquid from raw vegetables and fruits, squeezing just the juice out of them. There are different methods of juicing, for instance, manually, with a food processor or most commonly, with a juicer. Most citrus fruits can be juiced with bare hands, or a citrus press. A food processor will grind all contents, including the pulp, while a juicer grinds and separates pulp and seeds from liquid. When juicing, a person’s diet is restricted to the consumption of these liquid juices alone. The process of juicing can help lower risks of heart disease, protect against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and inevitably leads to weight loss due to the consumption of fewer calories. Plant based diets have also been linked to a lower risk of developing cancer. Given that juicing involves separating the liquid from the pulp, skin and seeds of fruits and vegetables, the fiber is removed, proteins are stripped out, as well as a lot of other nutrients contained in the pulp. Some of the benefits of juicing include, but are not limited to a total body cleanse, an improvement in complexion, a healthy and high functioning digestive system, a boost in the immune system, increased energy and more focus or concentration during the course of the day. All of these can be traced back to the fact that raw plants contain important phytonutrients, flavonoids and anthocyanins, which are preserved by eliminating the heating process. One of the biggest downsides to juicing (besides low fiber intake) is that the protein intake is also limited. Not having either proteins or fibers in a diet means that one is not able to get that “full” feeling, and this can cause the body to go on strike and demand certain foods. There may also be a loss of total muscle mass because of the decrease in protein intake.
Ingredients: • 3 Carrots • 2 Apples • 1 Inch Ginger Root
Directions: Place all ingredients into the juicer. Juice and serve chilled or on the rocks. Fresh juice should ideally be consumed immediately. If left exposed, it can attract pathogens, harbor bacteria and lead to food poisoning.

The Fall Harvest
WINES A
By: Elizabeth Carris
s the warm summer breezes fade into the cool winds of autumn and the earth says “look at me” with all its bountiful colors of fall through its trees, it makes me think of fire pits on patios and necks wrapped in scarves and fingerless gloved hands holding the big bold tastes of fall in a glass. Bring back the reds! But, don’t forget those sparklers too that can add delight to any weathered feast. It’s also harvest season for the winemakers so fall is a perfect time for wine.

Fall wines should be wines that complement all the hearty dishes served that time of year. There can be a perfect wine served at your adult Halloween party or paired exclusively for your wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Take your time browsing the red wine isle and look for wines that won’t over power the tastes of comfort like pasta’s with tomato based sauces or hearty lamb dishes and your favorite turkey and stew concoctions. A perfect pairing for those foods would be a smooth and bold Zinfandel. A softer Pinot Noir would complement the ever popular American dishes like meat loaf and pot roast or the current favorite vegetable, the Brussel sprout. And don’t overlook the whites like a Gewurztraminer with its spicy crispness that can pair very well with pumpkin pie, caramel apples and that lovely turkey and dressing with sweet potatoes. The super fun and festive sparkling wine can make an appearance with spicy foods, fried foods and show off for brunch with a delectable spinach quiche. And last but not least is a Port which is a dessert wine usually with a sweet nutty flavor. Feature that with your dark chocolates, cheesecakes or apple pies this fall. Other reds for more experienced wine drinkers or wine adventurers can look forward to making a return from the cellar is the always big, bold fruit forward wines like the Cabernet Sauvignon’s with their black berry, current and sometimes cocoa flavors and tannins that give it that bite. Along with Bordeaux’s that are tannic also but open up smooth and floral when swirled around a large bowl of a wine glass. These wines are perfect for those cool nights by the crackling fire. They too pair very well with the heavier dishes that begin to be prepared in the fall such as lamb, beef stews, venison and even hearty gumbos to warm the belly and the soul. Don’t be afraid to try something new and different this fall when it comes to red wine but don’t put away all those whites just yet. Take hold of the smoky flavors that the reds have to offer. The aromas of incense and cherry can put a smile on any wine drinkers face. Sit back and relax by the crackling fire and enjoy the harvest of nature in a glass. SASSY | september 2014

life
By: Jillian Koeneman
There is an epidemic in this country that no one is talking about. A growing problem that people are either too afraid to talk about, or too embarrassed to even admit. Our pets are severely overweight. 52 percent of dogs in the US are overweight or considered medically obese, according to Association for Pet Obesity Prevention's 2012 National Pet Obesity Survey. By comparison 66 percent of Americans are obese, according to Center for Disease Control. There is definitely a correlation. The good news is that we can make a change! There are ways we can all work towards a healthier future that is fun for us and our furry friends.
Check out these fun exercises that you and your pet can do together! 1. Interval Walk
Turn one of your daily walks with your pet into calorie burning fun! If you’re not a runner, don’t worry. Here’s how it works: • 1 minute: walk • 20 second: jog • 1 minute: walk • 20 second: shuffle sideways • 1 minute: walk • 20 second: jog backwards The intervals will get your heart rate going, and then give it time to settle before getting it going again. This helps you both burn more calories and keeps you both on your toes…and paws. 16

2. Fetch Those Abs
Want to achieve those dream abs while simultaneously making your dog the happiest pet on earth? Take to the back yard and set yourself up in sit-up position. Take your dog’s favorite toy, lay back and reach the toy over your head, and as you come up for your sit up,; throw it! Then repeat. This will engage both your core and your arms, and give your dog the cardio he needs.
3. Give Me Squats!
Again grab your dog’s favorite toy. Show it to him when you squat down, and as you rise lift it straight up over your head. Your dog will jump for it and you will firm up your thighs and gluts. That’s a win-win if I’ve ever heard of one!
4. Dog Tag
Just as simple as it sounds, tag your dog and RUN! They’ll chase you and you’ll both get your heart rates soaring.
5. Master the Stairs
Find a longer staircase, in your house or maybe in the local high school grandstands. Leash your dog and start climbing. Up and down, up and down. Alternate trips up with taking steps two at a time, or side-stepping up them.
6. Puppy Pushups
Alternate doing your own reps of push-ups and having your dog do his version. Ask him to sit, then lay down and then sit again. Repeat 10 times.
7. Paw Sits
Find an empty wall and press your back against it. Slide down until your knees form a 90-degree angle, then ask your pet to give you their paw and hold for 30 seconds. The added weight will give you more of a challenge. If your dog is too small to reach your thighs with their paws, pick them up!
Your pets are your greatest champions! They love you unconditionally and only want to spend time with you. They long to make you happy, so help them feel happy in return. A healthy dog is a happy dog. SASSY | september 2014

4 YouFallCan FitHobbies Into Your Busy Schedule
A
By: Allison Boelcke Smith
s a working woman, it may already feel like there isn’t enough hours in a day to get everything you must do accomplished – let alone time for hobbies. However, having a hobby may actually make you more productive in your career. It not only relaxes you and prevents burn-out, but a hobby may also open your mind and make you more creative. And what better time than fall to get started on a hobby? The lull time between summer and the upcoming holidays gives you the perfect opportunity to dive into a new hobby.
Check out these four inexpensive fall hobbies that you can fit into your busy schedule:
Knitting
Knitting can be the ultimate way to give your brain a break after a long day at the office, and make some homemade gifts for the upcoming holiday season in the process. Instead of scanning your smartphone and answering emails, vow to power down and put your fingers to use with some knitting needles. In this increasingly high-tech age, handmade crafting has become nearly extinct but knitting is making a comeback (even big name actresses like Cameron Diaz and Hilary Swank have been pictured knitting on set). If you’re not sure where to start, knitting has a surprisingly strong online community of people of all ages and skill sets to offer advice and patterns.
Baking
If there’s one hobby that your family and coworkers alike will be glad you took time to spend on, it’s baking. Support our local Michiana farmers and take advantage of the seasonal Michiana fall crops, such as pumpkins and apples, to finally stop putting off improving your baking skills. Make it a goal to set aside time to bake one new recipe a week or even just a month. If you’re especially crunched for time, take a look online (Pinterest, anyone?) for tons of quick beginner recipes. By the time Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around, you’ll be able to save money and make your treats from scratch. 18

Walking/Running
✶
There is no shortage of beautiful scenery during the fall in Michiana, so stop viewing it from your car on the commute from work and start seeing it up-close by foot. Regardless of your work schedule, it is an absolute necessity to make time for 30 minutes of physical activity and the cooler temperatures of fall can make it an easier transition if you’re not an experienced runner. Sign up for a 5k walk or race and start on a beginner program (there are several online programs that show you how to slowly transition into longer distances) to give you motivation. You’ll get an energy and mood boost that will help you in all aspects of your life, including work.

Speaking of the beautiful Michiana scenery, photography can be a perfect creative outlet and is a hobby that can take as much or little time as you need. The problem with photography as a hobby is that often no printing or framing/organizing in albums takes place after the initial snapping due to time constraints or lack of motivation. If you don’t have the time it takes to develop your photographs and arrange them in scrapbooks, an alternative is online photo books. You simply upload your photos onto predesigned templates that are then printed into a book for you – you can get the same appeal of scrapbooking without the time it takes. There’s no better time to turn over a new leaf than during the crisp and colorful Michiana fall. Make yourself a priority by taking a break from work in the office and at home, and unwind with a new hobby – even if it’s only for a 15 minute block each day. Investing in your mental health will pay off in your career performance.

s a wife, mother, professor and prominent South Bend dermatologist, Dr. Holly Harris defines what it means to balance a healthy home and professional life. “My family has always come first, but I also love my work,” says Dr. Harris, who has been working as a dermatologist at the South Bend Clinic since 1986…while also raising three children. In speaking with Dr. Harris, it is clear to see how establishing her priorities and pursuing her passion has led her to success in all areas of her life. After discovering a deep interest in surgery throughout medical school, Dr. Harris realized she especially loved performing procedures and connecting with patients. “I really loved helping them look better and feel better about themselves,” which led to her path towards Dermatology. After training at the University of Iowa, Dr. Harris began her practice at the South Bend Clinic and, 28 years later, has never looked back. “It’s been a wonderful place to practice, and I am privileged to work with such a great group of both doctors and nurses who are truly focused on providing the very best in patient care.” Dermatology and her work at the Clinic have incorporated what Dr. Harris loved about medicine in school; the ability to perform procedures while also developing relationships with the patients she has intimately impacted. In addition to serving as a dermatologist, Dr. Harris manages a bustling cosmetic practice that focuses on products to maintain the youthful and relaxed appearance in men and women of all ages. “We continue striving more and more to practice a healthier lifestyle with regular exercise and better diets; minimizing the signs of aging is also a part of this process.” Dr. Harris’ cosmetic practice features fillers, Botox, lasers and chemical peels to help reduce those nagging signs of aging. Preventive measures such as sunscreens are another facet to the anti-aging process that her practice supports. With such an impressive resume, Dr. Harris loves to pass along her experience and wisdom by teaching at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Through her work there, Dr. Harris gains access to clinical research trials that highlights the most recent therapies and devices for patient care. In hosting Family Practice and Dermatology residents for training in her practice, Dr. Harris ensures she makes a lasting impact on the next generation of doctors. So many of us understand the importance of bedside manner and meticulously completed procedures, a combination Dr. Harris values and has mastered. But at the end of the day, when the patients return home, relieved after a successful surgery and the bright-eyed medical students retire to the library for more studying, Dr. Harris takes off her scrubs and becomes just Holly, an active mother and loving wife. Dr. Harris admits that balancing a full-time career with a busy family is not always easy. In establishing both personal goals as well as professional goals, Holly thrives through the love and support of her husband, raising three now-grown children and maintaining a lasting marriage. The Harris’ continue to work in creating a healthy balance of work, family and recreation, allowing them time to enjoy playing tennis and golf, while also participating in local charity work. And although the kids are out of the house, spending time together is still a priority, one that perfectly depicts the extraordinary balance of Dr. Harris’ life as clearly as her patients’ skin.
Tips
For On-The-Go Clear Skin
For Our Busy, Sassy Women
Sunburn can drastically increase our risk for skin cancer while also breaking down the elastic fibers and collagen in our skin, accelerating the aging process. Use sunscreen daily and avoid the mid-day sun as well as direct sun exposure. Keep sunscreen, an extra hat and coverup along with a sun umbrella in your car for unexpected sun emergencies! Prescription medication like retinoid can help reverse the sun damage that has accumulated and reduce over-time signs of aging

Staying Fit While On The By: Lara West
GO
Staying fit while you travel can seem impossible, but it’s not! Whether you travel often or occasionally, by air or by land there are several simple ways that you can incorporate a satisfying fitness routine into your travel itinerary. You can hit the ground running by preparing for your workout before you even leave your house, and this starts in the planning stage:
Now that you have yourself set up for success with a solid foundation it’s time to follow through with the commitment you made to your health. Keep focused while on the road.
Booking - The best place is to start is with booking. Check for an on-site fitness center when selecting your hotel, so you can just make a short walk to work-out. If you keep a tighter budget or prefer motels, find out if there are any nearby parks with walking/running paths. (Don’t forget pools are great for cardio!) Look for nearby gyms if you have a membership with a national franchise.
Eat Right - Trail mix and apples make great travel snacks, and just because you’re not in the comfort of your own home doesn’t mean you have to resort to processed snacks and fast foods. Make a stop at the grocery store and pick up healthy alternatives to keep readily available in your room.
Schedule - Avoid missed opportunities and pencil your workout sessions into your daily itinerary and treat it like a business appointment. The biggest mistake is telling yourself that you’ll work out whenever you can squeeze it in, and actually believing you’ll “find the time.” With that being said, don’t be so set on your schedule that you miss opportunities that are forced on you, such as flight delays, traffic backups and any other changes that offer down time. Packing - The medium by which you travel has no bearing on a few essential items you can choose from to easily pack in your purse, and use at any rest area, airport gate and at any time in your hotel room. Some of these versatile and portable items have potential to be more effective than some machines in the gym. They include: • Jump Rope • Resistance Bands • Gliding Disks • Hand Grips • Online Videos (Use your mobile device anywhere!)
Venue - Sometimes the gym is just not where you want to be and that is alright. Walk around the property outside and find an open spot that does motivate you to work out. Here you can stretch and enjoy a complete body-weight workout (and hopefully a really great view! How inspiring would it be to enjoy a peaceful ocean or mountainous view while taking care of your body?)
Exercises for the road: Triceps Dip: Sit on the edge of a chair with your hands next to your thighs gripping the edge. Push up and bring your hips out just beyond the chair. Lower your body down until your elbows reach a 90 degree angle. Push up and repeat. (Modify by straightening legs for more intensity.) Plank Jacks: Start in the plank position, with your shoulders over your wrist, body straight and feet together. Jump spreading your feet apart as though you are doing a horizontal jumping jack, and then bring your feet back together and repeat. Side Lunge: Begin standing with your feet shoulder width apart and hands on hips. Step out to side with toes forward and squat down keeping alternate leg straight to the side. (Modify by keeping your foot off the ground when returning to the upright position before starting another.)
One of the most important things to remember about staying fit while you travel is to have a healthy attitude and just have fun with it.

The Bar
Basics By: Sam Hunsberger
“If it contains more than two grams of sugar then it’s not going to be the best choice for somebody whose goal is to begin eating healthier.”
I
t’s September and for at least the third time this year I’m vowing to “get back into shape” before summer really ends, and there is, once again, zero motivation to get that bikini-body until 2015 rolls around. And, like the first two attempts to kick-it back in gear, the actual decision to start a healthier lifestyle is much easier than the umpteenth million decisions that must now follow. Should I join a gym or should I just buy some workout DVDs? CrossFit, what’s that? Are those tires they are throwing? Do I need to throw tires too? And that’s just the beginning, because if you’re anything like me your next round of decisions usually takes place in a dressing room at Dick’s Sporting Goods where you spend an hour debating whether you look better in Nike, Adidas or Under Armour workout apparel, and you may secretly try on a pair of those cute spandex booty shorts that you swear you will someday be brave enough to wear in public. But, after taking 10 minutes of feeling bad about yourself, you purchase a plethora of mismatched brands, since you can’t decide on just one, and you go about your merry way until your next stop, which inevitably is some type of nutrition store that sells all the pills and potions you think you need to get it right and get it tight. For me, walking into a health store is typically overwhelming. Pills to lose weight, to gain muscle, to boost energy, to grow a magic beanstalk, this pill, that pill...it’s all a bit much. After I read closely to a hundred different bottles labeled with words so long they sound made up, I ultimately decided that I’ll stick with my Flintstone’s vitamins that I’ve been taking since I was five. Then, I move on to the protein bars, because a chocolatecovered peanut butter pretzel bar actually sounds like something I’d like to eat. But do I really need to consume something with 200 grams of protein? I mean is that necessary? And then there’s the section of gluten-free bars. Should I go gluten-free? What is gluten anyways? No seriously, I’m asking you…what is gluten? Do meal replacement bars work? Am I really going to be full after eating just one of these?

september 2014 | SASSY
Well, it turns out if the double chocolate chunk brownie bar looks too good to be true, it probably is, because luckily for me I was able to confide in Fitness Coach, Michelle “Mic” Snyder.
Below are some advice from Michelle when venturing through the wonderful world of protein and power bars: First and foremost, always, always, read the label, and if the ingredients don’t sound like they are all natural substances, then it’s probably best to shy away from that specific bar. The label will also reveal how many grams of sugar each bar contains, and Michelle suggests that if it contains more than two grams of sugar then it’s not going to be the best choice for somebody whose goal is to begin eating healthier.
Higher amounts of sugar might be in bars that are all natural with fruit in them, which is ok, but beware of gimmicky labels that use words like “all natural” and “real fruit” when in reality the contents are anything but that.
Bars can be great on-the-go snack alternatives to avoid stopping and getting fast food or other quick fatty meals, but try not to use these to replace a real healthy meal too frequently.
Some bars can often times can be loaded with calories, so be sure to check the “per serving” portion of the label. A bar might read 100 calories at the top, but in actuality that is per serving, and the bar actually contains five servings.

GLORY RESTORED. Michelle also advises that if you’re looking for quick protein after a workout, stick with the good old fashion fruits and veggies. If you don’t have time to grab food, then try a protein shake because oftentimes the powders are lower in sugar and calories, more filling and more economical opposed to the bars. Now that you have the rundown on the bar basics it’s time to actually go run… or lift a bar with weights on it. But, of course, if you have any pre-existing health issues then it is always the best policy to consult your doctor before beginning any new fitness or health routine.

The Five Things Every Room Needs
Decorating a home can seem daunting. What pieces should you buy? What colors should you use? How should the furniture be arranged? The questions are endless. But before you go into paralyzed mode and give up, try these few tips and make sure your rooms have at least five things:
By: Andrew Skipper
A Purpose
It may sound simple, but most people have rooms in their home that they never use! Take a mental inventory of the rooms in your house. Chances are you have certain areas that rarely get used, if ever. That formal living room? The dining room? How about the sitting room…what are you supposed to do in there? By identifying “dead zones” or rooms that have turned into passthroughs, you can take back valuable square footage in your house. I once had a client who wanted a special space to dedicate to creating art. She was taking water color classes and needed somewhere private where she could paint at home. But, with a family and only one living room, her options were limited. So we walked through the house and came to a guest bedroom filled with cast-away furniture. You know, hand-me-downs and leftovers from her husband’s college dorm room. I asked her when the last time she had guests stay there. It had been over a year! So we decided to convert the guest room (which was only used once a year at the most) into a painting room. With storage pieces, an easel and a comfortable chair, she now has a space that she can use every week for something that she loves! That’s what I call maximizing square footage.
Something Personal
It’s easy to get trapped in the mindset that your home should look a certain way. With television shows all about real estate and selling homes, we are constantly told to depersonalize our spaces and take out anything unnecessary like photos, collections or pieces that reflect a specific taste or style. That’s all good advice if you’re actually selling your home. But if you live there, your house should be a representation of you and your family! Collections, photos and artwork reveal your personality and values. They tell people about who you are and how you want to live. Remember, when it comes to decorating your home, add at least a few personal touches to each room. A monogrammed pillow, a unique piece of art that speaks to you, coffee table books that are of interest to you; these types of things help your house feel less like a furniture showroom and more like a home. 26

but most “peopleIt mayhavesoundroomssimple, in their home that they never use! ”
Original Art
Framed prints and posters can be affordable ways to get art on the walls, but there is something about original art that adds a special touch to any room. Whether you introduce paintings, sculpture or photography into your space, try to find at least one or two pieces that are one-of-a-kind or handmade. If your budget allows you to begin a collection of fine art, you may find yourself learning about the old masters or even emerging modern artists. Art can be a fantastic investment as pieces often retain or increase in value. By utilizing art consultants, you will be able to enjoy your collection and investment while also leaving a legacy to your children or favorite charity because art is a smart way to pass on wealth. Original art doesn’t have to be expensive though. By attending local art shows or student exhibitions, you can pick up gorgeous handmade pieces from emerging or regional artists for very affordable prices. And you will be supporting the local economy. Now that’s a win/win!
Something Unexpected
My personal taste tends to be more classic, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. By adding one quirky accessory to a classic room, you can make it fresh and interesting. Why not place a huge moose antler on the dining table when it’s not in use? How about hanging an oversized modern chandelier above a classic entry table, playing up the scale of a room? What if you upholstered the walls of your den in a rich fabric, creating a cocoon-like effect? Think outside the box and make your home unique to you.
Something Old, Something New
No matter what style you prefer, in this modern world it’s important to mix old and new. A completely period room, be it Louis XVI or Victorian would not be functional to live in today. We use electricity so we need lamps near outlets; we prefer oversized furniture that’s comfortable to lounge in rather than tiny side chairs with delicate legs. But a room that only houses brand new items can feel lifeless and flat. It’s all about the mix. If your tastes tend to be extreme (i.e. you only like antiques or you only like modern) try the 80/20 rule. Go ahead and use 80% of what you like, and then add in just 20% of something from the opposite end of the spectrum. You may be surprised how a piece of modern art hung over an antique bureau livens up the whole room. And conversely, how using an antique rug in a modern room can change the entire feel of the space.

The
Fruit
of Life
T
By: Charrise McCrorey
he older I get, the more I realize how creating an amazing life is really about my experiences not about possessions. It’s not about how much I work, or how much I play; who I know or don’t know. It’s about me, in conversation with someone else. It’s about a deep human connection with those I love, and the experiences associated with that. I remember asking my grown children once about their favorite childhood vacation. I fully expected that their answer would be Disneyworld (which was my least favorite). Instead, they agreed that their favorite was our vacation up north in Traverse City, where we did nothing but relax and play in the lake. It was an experience to remember because we were together, without distractions. We weren’t laughing at some cartoon character exhibit; we were laughing at our stories, at each other being goofy and connecting as a family.
That was a brilliant answer, and I learned then that the most gratifying experiences have more to do with the people in them than the places we visit. Humans being human together. I get that it’s not always happy, happy, joy, joy. Sometimes it’s painful, navigating a loss or a challenge. And even in those times, the connection with another human who cares for us makes our life worth living. My life is an accumulation of experiences. I imagine that when I get to the end of my life, this is what I’ll remember. I will remember the way my grown son calls me “momma” when he’s feeling like he needs my support. His voice gets soft and the little boy heart returns. It’s sweet and endearing, reminding me that I will always be his momma, even when he doesn’t need me much. I will remember the time, when he was six years old, he was obstinate and persistent about getting his own way while getting ready for school each morning, frequently pushing the limits of my patience. He wanted to wear the clothing he wanted to wear, which didn’t meet my standards. I remember feeling violent, wanting to control him, being frustrated that he didn’t cooperate with my plan. I showed up at work that day, after finally getting them dropped off for school, in tears. I was past logic; overcome with pure and raw emotion. I didn’t know what to do with this kid. My co-worker looked me in the eye and said “love him.” He said, when he’s in the throes of a temper tantrum, gather him close and hug him. This was some of the best parenting advice I’d ever received. 28
september 2014 | SASSY
I will remember my daughter when she was three, just learning to be a conversationalist. She would jump up on my bed as I was putting clothes away. Lying down, her chin propped up with her hands, she’d say in her tiny girl voice “Let’s have a talk” in a very grown up way. I’d laugh and abandon the chore I was doing, her little personality irresistible. I will remember the rare moments with my husband, when his heart was exposed. I will remember him sobbing when his dad passed, and when we put our beloved dogs down. I will remember his daily morning love texts, calling me his queen and his willingness to do anything at all if it made me happy. I will remember tender moments with my mom, as she shared with me her life history. She told me details I never knew, and I remember being so blessed to have had the conversation. I’ll remember her courage and strength in navigating a life that was often difficult, a model for my times like that.

I will remember the vacations, especially the Mexico vacations. All-inclusives in the best possible way...the sun, the sand, the sea, the friendships. I’ll remember the diversity of the native people, their homes with three walls and their big smiles in spite of their conditions. I’ll remember the passing of my dad, our hearts healing as he made his transition. I’ll remember the laughter and joy I share with my sisters and brother; each of them bringing their unique gifts to my life. I’ll remember the nieces and nephews, and the greats, and the way their voice changes when they call me “Aunt Reesy.”
This is the fruit of my life. When I get tangled up in the thought that I’m working too much or that time is spinning away, I realize how blessed I am to be in such loving relationships with so many people. And that’s how I know that my life is balanced. SASSY | september 2014

work
By: Allison Boelcke
Let’s face it, the very behaviors that typically result in praise as little girls are often what can hold us back in adulthood, especially in our careers. Naturally acting as the caretaker, wanting everyone to get along, being sweet and modest, etc. – while these aren’t bad qualities whatsoever, if left unchecked, they can cause women to unconsciously undermine themselves in their careers. To be successful in the workplace, women need to acknowledge how gender roles may shape their actions, both good and bad, and adjust their strategies accordingly.
Keep your career on track by avoiding these 5 common career mistakes:
1.Needing to Be Liked
Getting along with your colleagues is never a mistake in of itself – it’s when the need to be liked comes at the expense of your career goals. Be polite and respectful, but ultimately keep your own (and your organization’s) goals in mind when dealing with interactions. Never saying “no” or offering a dissenting opinion because you don’t want to offend anyone will ultimately hinder your work performance if you’re bogged down with extra work or not letting your ideas be heard. Make decisions and stick to them with confidence without looking for approval from everyone.
2.
Waiting to Be Noticed
Unfortunately, hard work does not speak loudly enough to be heard over other people. Being modest is a common trait in women, but it does not translate well into the workplace. Your boss and other key decision makers are generally too busy to realize the extent of your achievements on a regular basis. Instead of waiting to be noticed, draw attention to your hard work by giving progress reports or statistics. If you’re having a hard time getting your manager to notice you, ask if there’s additional assignments you can help with.
4.Not Asking for Enough Money
It’s well documented that women make less money than men for the same job, and part of the reason is that – women often don’t ask for more. Studies have found that men are up to seven7 times more likely than women to negotiate for a higher salary. Don’t leave money you deserve on the table because you’re scared to negotiate. Do some research into median salaries for your job and compile evidence of your achievements so you have the facts to go on to determine your worth.
5.Overthinking
Women tend to be analytical, detail-oriented creatures, which can be a blessing and a curse. Analyzing to the point of not being able to make a decision and take action undermines the confidence in the workplace. Ruminating over the details after a mistake can also make it hard to move on and grow. If you’re an overthinkerover thinker, give yourself deadlines for how long you’ll allow yourself to brainstorm, and then move on to action.
3.Not Taking Risks
Women tend to put pressure on themselves to make no mistakes, but that perfectionism comes at a price of being scared to take risks in their careers. If you’re hesitant to volunteer for a task or go after a new opportunity because you’re afraid of making a mistake, you could be missing out on moving forward in your career. Studies have shown that women are less likely to go for promotions than men and it’s often the result of simply not applying because they don’t meet 100% of the desired qualifications. Never failing means never having the opportunity to learn and grow. 30

It’s not about changing who you are or “acting like a man” – the successful working woman plays to her strengths and work around her weaknesses in order to convey the professional image she’s after. Take these tips and keep climbing the corporate ladder.

A New Business’ Guide
So you are starting a new business?
to the Web
{ { Congratulations!
I am sure that you are excited, nervous and that you have a million questions running through your head at any given second; I know the feeling very well. Everyone will give you advice about your business model, or how to set up your accounting services and those are all extremely important to your future success, but what a lot of well-wishers forget to tell you is how important it is to establish a consistent and visible online presence from the very beginning.
By: Jillian Koeneman
Simply having a website and social media pages doesn’t cut it anymore for small businesses. The World Wide Web is just that, worldwide and chockfull of information that could lead to your business being lost in the fray or passed up to watch a video of a cat playing piano.
In order to get started off on the right foot, checkout these tips to assure that your business gets the online attention it deserves: Logo and Branding A strong logo and consistent branding is critical to a small businesses’ success. A professional, well-thought out logo and brand identity profile which includes the colors, fonts, and other brand styles will help you tell your brand story, build your brand identity and increase your visibility, as well as credibility.
into all platforms at the same time, it’s important to reserve your name in the major platforms should you choose to utilize it later. Setup business accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest from the get-go so that someone can’t steal your business name and force you to pick a less-than-ideal name once you are ready to use it.
Domain and Email As soon as you have officially created your business, purchase a domain name for your website. The domain name should be short and have a “.com” at the end of it. If you can, work in keywords into the domain that is also helpful (read more about the importance of keywords later on in this article). For example if you are starting a wine bar in South Bend, you should strongly consider the domain winebarsouthbend.com, in addition to the formal name of your wine bar. You can buy multiple domains and direct them all to the same spot as well. After you purchase your domain, you should also set up official email addresses for yourself and key staff members using the @winebarsouthbend. com format. Begin to use this official email address on business cards and all other marketing pieces.
Website Your company website is the foundation of your marketing efforts and is often the customer’s first interaction with you. Make sure your website is professionally done, clean looking and easy-touse, is setup in an SEO-friendly way, works seamlessly on mobile and is on the first page of Google. Often the easiest thing for new businesses to do is to hire a qualified web designer so that you can focus on the other key elements of your business.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest In today’s digital age, social media should be a strong part of any small business’ marketing plan. While you don’t have to jump
Online Directories There is a directory for almost all industries and they’re almost always free. List your business on every relevant directory on the web. Keywords come into play here as well, because if your business’ website doesn’t show up in the top search results, its directory listing probably will. Make sure your verbiage is consistent across all listings to ensure it’s recognizable by users.
Keywords People who use search engines to find businesses in their area rarely know businesses by name. Rather, they type keywords related to what they are looking for (Wine Bar South Bend) into their favorite search engine and choose the businesses at the top of the list because they feel that they are most relevant. You must be relevant and at the top of the list in order to get people to your website. In fact, 75 percent of web users will never scroll past the first page of search results. Q:
I have a good idea for a business. I’ve done the research and feel confident it’s an idea that hasn’t been done before. I read somewhere that I should have a business plan before I start my business. I don’t really know how to make one. Is it really necessary?
Answer: Yes, it’s best to create a business plan, largely because it forces you to think about things you probably don’t want to think about - like competitors, budgets and forecasts. Often the idea of running your own business does not closely match the reality of actually running that business. A written business plan will give you a less myopic view. You can’t know everything up front, but knowing as much as you can and planning for it will increase your chances at succeeding. Also, having a plan is almost always better than not having one. However, in today’s times things change quickly. You may need to adjust your business plan quarterly, to accommodate the pace of the world today. This of course depends on your business idea and how much technology plays a part in it. Starting a business is exciting, and it’s not a small endeavor. Here are three important questions to ask yourself: 1. What do I want my business to do for me? 2. Why is this important to me? 3. What will stop me from this business being a home run? Then, move on to creating your business plan. As for the “how-to” of writing a business plan, there are many resources out there for you. There are countless books on the topic. You can go to your local S.C.O.R.E. chapter and get free help from retired business owners and leaders. You could hire someone to help you. There are also some online tools that walk you through the process. 34

Q:
My parents started a small printing company back in 1968. I’m their only child, so by default, I’m the one in charge now. I have many doubts about my ability to continue as they have, maintaining a profitable company. I’ve worked full time in the company for years, and now suddenly I have to run this thing. I’m scared I will fail. Can you help me?
Answer: I think you’re very smart for being able to ask yourself this question, rather than denying your fears exist. When you shine the light on something, it gets a little easier to manage. It is, of course, possible that you will fail. It’s also possible that you will create something new that transcends everything your parents ever wanted. You now have the opportunity to control the destiny of the company and the people in it. It’s also a big responsibility, and I get that. The first and most important thing to consider is your team of employees, including the leaders. Do you trust them? What are their talents? What are yours? Will your combined talents complement one another’s? The more you understand your team and the dynamics of such, the more leverage you’ll have in executing growth strategies. Also the team needs to accept that the leadership has changed, and embrace you as the leader. Not everyone will make that conversion easily. A company is made up of people, and you are only as strong as your weakest link. If you need help, ask for it. You don’t have to do it alone. Decide where your greatest trust is with potential advisors, and lean into them.

Business Forum This Month's Question: “After several years of working in the corporate industry, I have decided that I want to take my career to the next level by opening up my own business. My biggest concern is taking the financial risk of owning my own company and it not succeeding. What are some tips that you can give me to help lessen my risks?”
Unfortunately, unless you are independently wealthy,
risk is a major part of the equation in starting a business. If you don’t have a high tolerance for risk, I don’t recommend going down that road. Even a moderately successful start-up will have periodic moments of anxiety and it could make you miserable. My wife and I were 33 years old with a couple of very young children when we started our business in the middle of a recession. I guess you could say we weren’t smart enough to know better. Although there were a number of those moments of high anxiety I alluded to, there were also many moments of great satisfaction. Still are. Being an entrepreneur can be tremendously fulfilling, but it’s not for everyone. I guess I would say the best ways to lessen the risks of starting a business would include the following:
Thom Villing Thom Villing is president and co-founder of Villing & Company, a South Bend-based marketing communications firm established in 1982. Prior to starting the agency, he was vice president/creative director at Markmakers, Inc. Villing & Company works with a wide range of clients throughout the Great Lakes area with extensive experience in financial, healthcare, transportation products, food and food service and professional services marketing. The agency is also very active in supporting social service, arts and other not for profit organizations in the community.

1. Make sure your business is one that you know and understand, including the current marketing and competitive environment. And never stop being a student of your chosen profession. 2. Have a solid business plan. 3. Quickly develop a strong support group including trusted relationships with bankers, attorneys and accountants – as well as a dependable base of friends and business associates. 4. Hire smart, hard-working people who complement your own skill sets rather than duplicate them. 5. Never assume that the world thinks the same way you do. We are all influenced by our own life experiences and those are often vastly different that those of the people with whom we may be doing business. 6. Do not fall prey to the notion that “If you build it, they will come.” That may have worked in Field of Dreams, but it seldom works in the real world of business. I know this may seem a bit self-serving from someone who provides marketing services, but I have seen way too many examples of entrepreneurs believing the world was going to beat a path to their door step, only to see their business fail for lack of people knowing what products or services they offer and the value those products or services could provide. Going back to some of what I said previously, I believe it is also important to be somewhat fearless. The willingness to take action usually trumps inaction. That’s not to say one should be reckless in the decision-making process, but over-analyzing specific situations inevitably leads to inaction. As the expression goes, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
Congratulations on taking the leap! Owning a business is challenging, but rewarding.
And yes, it’s a good idea to be concerned about risk. But, remember that the idea is to minimize unnecessary risk, not the kind of risk that you actually need to take if you’re going to be successful. After all, you won’t be successful by playing it safe all the time. The rewards? They’re not just financial but you need to start with finances. And it’s good that you’re thinking about them now. Plenty of people jump into a new business without fully planning. That planning starts with finding an accountant you trust who can help set up your legal corporation, a bookkeeping system and assist you in filing all of your taxes. It’s also critical to manage your cash flow closely and pay bills on time right from the beginning. You need to make time for this part of the business weekly no matter how busy you are serving clients. Managing accounts payable and receivable should be a regular part of your work week. And if possible, you should either start the company with cash reserves on hand, or quickly establish a reserve that will help to get you through the typical ebb and flow of receivables and payables. A good reserve can make all the difference in the world when it comes to cash flow. As for your long term financial stability and health, just make sure that your company is always in demand. From a marketing perspective, that means you must know exactly where your company fits into the competitive landscape. You must know precisely what makes your service or product different that people will want it and are willing to pay for it. Finally, treat your clients well. Early on in my career, I learned from a gentleman whom I truly admire, that you should always do what is right for them no matter the cost. It’s something that I never forgot and it’s a philosophy that everyone in my company embraces today. When you work with people who think and act this way on a daily basis, you can’t go wrong.
Melinda Pierce Melinda Pierce’s background includes not-for-profit healthcare marketing, public relations and sales plus many years of work on local and statewide not-for-profit boards. She is a graduate of Ivy Tech College, Indiana University and The University of Notre Dame. Melinda and her husband Lou started Big Idea Company 13 years ago. Big Idea provides public relations and integrated marketing services for academic, medical specialty and not-for-profit niches throughout the region. Over the years, the company has received 10 Emmy nominations and three Emmy awards for work done writing and producing fundraising films and television campaigns.

Hoping for a Cure for
Huntington’s Disease By: Cyndi Troyer On the morning of June 7th, 2014, our Michiana community gathered at Discovery Middle School in Granger for the 4th Annual Northern Indiana Huntington’s Disease Team Hope Walk with Silent Auction. With the sun in the sky, music to be heard and over 80 items to bid on, it was a morning filled with friends, family, fun and fundraising! HD is a rare neuro-degenerative brain disorder that steals a person’s ability to walk, talk, think, swallow and control movement. Currently, there is no treatment that halts the progression of HD. HD symptoms are similar to other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS, and a cure for one is likely to benefit all. Proceeds from the corporate sponsors and the HD Team Hope Walk are donated to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America to support HD Research and the HDSA Center of Excellence in Indianapolis which services HD families. Each COE, has at its core a multidisciplinary team approach which brings specialists together to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for each person with HD. Funds raised from the Silent Auction are donated to the Trey Gray HD Fund at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Trey Gray is a 1987 Penn High School graduate who has partnered with VUMC to support HD research and HD families. Trey was diagnosed with HD in 2003. Because of the generosity and out-pouring support of our Michiana Community, we have been able to donate close to $55,000, over the past four years, to HDSA and VUMC. For more information on HD, please visit www.hdsa.org . For information on our local support group, please contact Sandy Iavagnilio (574) 215-5810 or Sally Harris (574) 674-8403. To participate, volunteer, donate or sponsor the 2015 Walk and Silent Auction, please email troyerhd@hotmail.com. We are grateful to live in a community with such a grand heart! Thank you Michiana! Elkhart County Board of REALTORS® (ECBOR)
5K Classic Race for Charity
The Elkhart County Board of REALTORS® (ECBOR) 5K Classic Race for Charity was held on Saturday, August 9, 2014. The race took place on a sunny Saturday morning, in conjunction with the Middlebury Summer Festival in Elkhart County. Marketing Committee Chairman, Toni Bontrager stated “Our goal for this race is to give back to our community.” Not only do REALTORS® help the public achieve their dream of homeownership by assisting them in buying or selling their homes but we also give back to the community in which we serve and live. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Ribbon of Hope, an organization that assists local families who have been affected by cancer. The organization works directly with the patient or their family to provide services that may be necessary and to help with costs. The ECBOR 5K was a true success this year thanks to the support of the real estate community. Real Estate offices along with Affiliate offices donated money to support the Race and the prizes for all age divisions which included a drawing for an iPad mini. Many local merchants helped as well with donations of food, water and balloons. The committee is very grateful to and proud of the people who came out to support this event by either participating, cheering on the runners or donating. The marketing committee members are as follows: Toni Bontrager (Hallmark Excellence Realty), Chairman, then in alphabetical order: Diane Eash (Hallmark Excellence Realty), Donna Miller (Gold Key Home Inspections) and Meghann Sullivan (Fidelity National Title). The over-all winner for all age groups and time was Andy Williams.
