"Shenandoah and the Michigan Golf Classic" - By Jack Berry Larry Ziegler had the Michigan Golf Classic well in hand, but the $20,000 first prize money was not in anyone's hand. This infamous golf tournament where the professional golfers were not paid after their win (the new PGA Tour eventually paid the players), made history. From then on, tournament organizers had to have tournament prize money in escrow. Jack Berry, tracts down the story of one of Michigan's little known stories. Of special note is that Berry was able to find the scorecard from the tournament and see all of the disappointed golfers, including Mike Hill, who finished, fifth. "43 Years at the Masters" - By Jack Berry Jack Berry is one of our nation's greatest golf writers and he has the plaques to prove it. Of late, he has received the PGA Lifetime Journalism Award, The Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award and this month, the Masters Major Achievement Award. During his half century of golf writing, Berry has been at the Masters on 43 different occasions. This is a great read from a great writer. “Collegiate Spotlights: Michigan Golf Programs Provide Opportunities for Students - Albion College" - By Chris Lewis Chris Lewis continues his series on Michigan collegiate golf, this time visiting Albion. "Treetops: Golf at its Best" - By Mike Duff Long time course reviewer, Mike Duff, had the opportunity to golf a number of the courses at Treetops this fall. His first review of Treetops was prior to its grand opening and part of his foursome was the new head golf professional, Rick Smith. In our Summer Issue, Duff has been assigned to review the recently refurbished Jones Masterpiece. "Michigan Golf Association and Legislative Leader, John Dodge Passes" By Bill Fountain Bill Fountain provides his thoughts about his mentor and friend, the late and great John Dodge. ============================== MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD ============================= Par-Fection - Brownstown I met with Tom Rinna, an independent golf instructor, at Par-fection, a golf training area at Brownstown, a downriver site. Rinna was looking for some promotional ideas for his business. Rinna has been around for 28 years teaching a golf instructional philiosopy that had it roots in Babe Ruth, Sam Bryd http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=2XCFpJobEwM , Ben Hogan http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=2zbsLMHNC_Y&feature=related and Jimmy Ballard. In fact, Rinna was part of the Colbert/Ballard golf schools that had a fast rise Mickey Cochrane (l) picks up a lesson from exand equally fast fall in Michigan. Rinna said Major leaguer, Sam Byrd. they started out the Colbert/Ballard schools and really did well in Michigan, but they got spread a little thin on instruction and it caught up with them. Rinna indicated that Sam Byrd, later to be come head golf professional at Plum Hollow (19441947), had actually supplied the philisophy for the Babe and then Hogan, himself. "In 1936, Byrd quit baseball to pursue a career in professional golf. He won six events on the PGA Tour between 1942 and 1946. He lost the final of the 1945 PGA Championship to Byron Nelson, 4&3, in match play. Byrd is also the only person to have played in a World Series and competed in golf's Masters Tournament. He made one appearance in the 1932 World Series (game 4) while playing for the New York Yankees - as a defensive replacement for Babe Ruth - in the bottom of the 9th inning. He finished twice in the top 10 at the Masters: third in 1941 and fourth in 1942. During his last appearance in 1948 he tallied the highest score ever at the second hole recording a 10. He finished the round with a 12-over-par 84." Quote taken from Wikipedia ***** Detroit - Michigan Sports Hall of Fame We thought we would stop in an check out the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and try to catch up with its current situation. The Hall has fallen on some hard times and is currently looking for a new home. Cobo Hall is scheduled to be renovated and has asked that the Hall find a new site. Funding for the Hall has been spotty as well, so much, that they did not elect a 2009 class nor have they scheduled at 2010 class. This is the same event at which Matthews, the 2001 Michigan Amateur champion, lost the title last year in a sudden death playoff. But this year with a final round four-under-par 68, Matthews finished at 16-under 272, two shots better than Jose de Jesus Rodriquez, and took home the title and $20,000. “I always make birdies on this course,” said the 30-year-old Ada, Michigan resident who also played on the Canadian Tour last year. “So it was just a matter of waiting for them and a bunch came on the weekend.” Accurate ball-striking was also a factor as Matthews only missed three fairways and ten greens for the tourney. “I was looking at birdie quite a bit.” Well, he not only looked at them he holed them, as well. Amid a packed leader board, Matthews on Sunday made birdie putts on 10, 12, and 14. And then the clincher was another birdie on 15 when Matthews sank a 40-foot putt. When asked how he handled the lead and the final round pressure at an event he lost in heartbreaking fashion in ’09 after a three-putt bogey on the 72nd hole, Matthews succinctly replied: “Breathing and believing!” Along with qualifying for a few PGA Tour events this past winter, Matthews has played in two Canadian Tour events thus far. He now has his first win on this Tour which is a full member of the International Federation of PGA Tours. The winner of its Order of Merit and the runner-up on this Tour receive exemptions into the second stage of the PGA TOUR Qualifying School. Matthews’ next event in this week’s Riviera Nayarit Classic, a $125,000 purse event, in Nayarit, Mexico. Guss, the senior academy instructor at the Rick Smith Golf Academy at Treetops, has, contributed often to Golf Digest magazine including, most recently, the February 2010 edition of the publication. In addition, he's also provided advice and how-to instruction on the game’s many fine points to Student Golfer Magazine, and he has been honored by Golf Digest as a top instructor in Michigan. Guss, 32, is a Michigan native. Born and Rick Smith chats with Jason Guss at the West Michigan Golf Show. raised in Morenci, Guss grew up playing the links of Demor Hills. A graduate of Ferris State University's Golf Management Program, he has been with the Rick Smith Golf Academy since 2001. Guss has twice been named a Top 20 Teacher in America Under the Age of 40, and three times, a Top 10 Instructor in Michigan by Golf Digest. At Treetops Guss was instrumental in setting up the Junior Development Program, which boasts a 1:1 student ratio and features instruction throughout the course of a spring/summer/fall, benefitting the developing competitive junior golfer much more than would a one-week camp. Treetops Junior Development Program received the Dul Family Player Development Award from the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association this past fall. Art: You may be aware that I'm also on a quest to shoot par, and have been keeping a diary that I had hoped would turn into a book. The working title is The Pursuit of Par. When I heard about Dream On, I was somewhat disappointed that an identical idea had come to print, though not detoured. By the way, I believe you left out a period in the price of the book. =================================== BOOK REVIEW: "ONE WEEK IN JUNE: THE U.S. OPEN" With Tom Kite and Don Wade =================================== Media Day at the Masters has had some Michigan story lines the past few years. In 2007, Jack Berry was honored by receiving the PGA Lifetime Journalism Award http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/jackberry/ . This year, Vartan Kupelian, President of the GWAA, has been in the news for his part in the decision to reportercott the Tiger Woods Mess Conference. Also, this year, Berry received another Art and Jennie McCafferty, strike the big award, the Masters Major Achievement Award for pose at the Masters.

Perhaps, more importantly, for publishers and producers, is that the Masters, with its natural attractions for golf writers also has the added feature of hosting the annual GWAA meeting each year. In essence, you have the opportunity to see some of the greatest golf writers and reporters in the world under one setting and seating. The media room at the Masters is the best on the circuit . I say all of this as a precursor to my review of "One Week in june: The U.S. Open". The aggregators of the book's content, Don Wade and Tom Kite, have solid credentials in writing. Don Wade, who has Golf Digest roots as well as many books on golf and playing. Tom Kite won the Open in 1992. The two of them have selected articles from the world's greatest golf writers over the past century. All of the articles pertain to the storied history of the U.S. Open and its place as our country's greatest golf tournament. Readers will be able to share the stories of writers like Frank Hannigan, John Feinstein, Art Spander, Herbert Warren Wind, Francis Quiment, Grantland Rice, Alister Cooke, Dan Jenkins, Rick Reilly, Dave Anderson and Jim Murray. The writers’ subjects include the great ones: Palmer, Nicklaus, Jones, Watson, Woods, Nelson and Hogan, as well as the courses they played: Oakland Hills, Oakmont, Olympic, Shinnecock, Pinehurst and the Country Club. EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Mike , Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though it's only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators. MONEY A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need but it's on sale.
BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel . The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items. ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument. FUTURE A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. SUCCESS A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man. MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does. DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. NATURAL Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night. OFFSPRING Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.
