CIRCULATION 16, 645 Edited by Art McCafferty artmccaf@glsp.com ================ MG ON THE ROAD ================ Thompsonville - Crystal Mountain Resort We just returned from a magical time at Crystal Mountain Resort while covering the Michigan Women's PGA Open, won by Lisa Strom. First of all, the golf program continues to thrive under the leadership of Brad Dean and his cadre of instructors Scott Wilson, Ina Davis, Mike Pearson, Ed Laprade and Mike Cote. They have been selected as one of Golf Magazine's Top 25 golf schools. Their students have done quite well, Ryan Brehm has won two Michigan Opens and former EMU star Korey Mahoney continues to pick up some checks. Not ones to rest on their laurels, they have incorporated a new line of thinking into their golf instruction, Zeno Link. On our video, Scott Wilson describes the latest wrinkle in their golf instruction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQWODFHA4T8 Crystal Mountain has continued to create lodging units on its property with a series of bungalows built at the base of their ski hills. Its inventory of available rooms, education center, spa and recreational facilities has allowed the resort to attract sizable corporate and association business. The grounds are beautiful and showcase the buildings dramatically. We were so struck by the beauty of the place that we created a Michigan Travel Television show just to let our viewers see how spectacular it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJwbKPHxxlE **** Arcadia - Arcadia Bluffs The addition of lodging at Arcadia Bluffs has made it a real player in destination golf. They have the great course, fantastic views and now rooms for people who want to extent their stay and play.. Bill Schriver, GM of Arcadia Bluffs, was understandably excited as he showed us around the property. The new lodge has 15 comfortably appointed guest rooms. Ten of the rooms face west with views of Lake Michigan, while the other five offer sunrise views. Each room is furnished with a king bed, desk and chair, flat screen television, stand up shower, and private walk-out porch. The rooms are indeed spectacular and offer outstanding views of the property. Your best bet is to click on to their website for the latest news and views. http://www.arcadiabluffs.com/the_lodge.php
**** Manistee - Manistee National Resort Doug Bell, GM of Manistee National Resort, indicated that things are getting back to norma since they completed the renovation of their proshop that caught on fire last year. They have added a new grill area to the building and spruced up the entire area. http://www.manisteenational.com/

==================================================================== STROM STORMS FROM BEHIND TO WIN MICHIGAN WOMEN'S OPEN: By Tim Hygh =====================================================================
Crystal Mountain, host of Michigan Women’s Open, Mountain Top Lodging
Lisa Strom of Huntersville, NC came from three shots behind to win her second Michigan Women’s Open Championship at Crystal Mountain. Strom, 33, edged first and second round leader Suzy Green-Roebuck by a shot with a clutch 8-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a final round 71 and a tournament total of 2-under, 214. Green-Roebuck finished alone in second at -1, 215. “The key today was to be consistent,” said Strom who won here in 2007. “Today I hit a lot of greens and only misjudged one iron shot.” Green-Roebuck, 42, entered the final round with a three-shot cushion but gave away a stroke on the first hole with a bogey…the first of four during the round. Up until then, she had recorded just threebogeys combined for the tournament. She has been battling a bad back all week and left the course
with numbness on her right side. But she made Storm earn her victory on the last hole. On the par 5 18th, Green-Roebuck laid up to 70-yards and hit a wedge to 9-feet. Strom went for the green in two but landed just short of the green and in the first cut of rough. Strom knocked her chip to 8 feet above the hole. Green-Roebuck made her birdie and that left the last play of the 54-hole event up to Strom. “You play in these tournaments to get into situations where your heart beat rises and it was on 18,” Strom said. She holed the birdie putt to end the tournament and collect $5,500 of the $40,000 purse. She now heads out to the Duramed Future’s Tour for three-events and then back to the LPGA Tour when they return from Asia. Roebuck-Green heads back to her family in Ann Arbor. She hasn’t played three consecutive rounds in three days since last year’s Michigan Women’s Open. Two long time rivals finished tied for third. Elaine Crosby, 52, of Jackson and Sue Ertl, 52, formerly of Ionia both shot 71-216 for even par. Only four players bested par or better. Editor's Note: Besides the four videos on past tournaments listed below, we did a couple of videos that were a little different this year, in that we interviewed Bill Mangrum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIc2XtSH5js about his work with the Leaderboard and then Eric Cooper, the Rules Official http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh7B_mYhRO0 Past Michigan PGA Women’s Open Videos 2009 Allison Fouch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geba4BunebA&feature=player_embedded 2007 Lisa Fernandes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlFF0NjXlks 2006 Kris Tamulis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK0XHozrtIw 2003 Breanne Hall http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show17/index.html ================================================================ TEN REASONS NOT TO MISS THE USGA JUNIOR AMATEUR: By Terry Moore ================================================================ Beginning this weekend with practice rounds, Egypt Valley CC will host the 63rd U.S. Junior Amateur, the first ever USGA national championship held in the Grand Rapids and West Michigan area. Whether or not you love golf or just like to yell “fore” from a speeding car, this is a championship not to be missed. In a state that sadly no longer hosts a PGA Tour stop like the Buick Open or Champions Tour events at TPC of Michigan and Egypt Valley, this is as good as it gets for watching inspirational golf. Let me count the ways: A national golf championship: Conducted by the USGA this championship for boys ages 17 and under, and ending with a 36-hole final match on July 24, will have a different aura than other tournaments. Far from the spoils and excess of Tour-level play, there’s something elemental, innocent and refreshingly genuine about amateur and junior golf. If your mental golf game is in a slump, attending this event will snap you out of it. And besides, it’s free. The defending champion: A Dallas lefty already committed to attending the U. of Texas in 2011, Jordan Spieth, 16, not only made the cut at this year’s Byron Nelson HP Classic he contended for the
title on the weekend, finishing T-17th in the PGA Tour event. In six tournaments so far for the elite American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), Spieth has been in the top ten each time and is averaging 70.76. Listening to Spieth during a telephone media interview session in May, I found him to be a polite, poised, and well-grounded young man with lots of class and enormous talent. Top players: Start with the exempt players such as Shugo Imahira (2009 Junior Amateur quarterfinalist), Anthony Paolucci (2007 Junior Amateur runner-up), Cameron Wilson (2009 Junior Amateur quarterfinalist), and Emiliano Grillo (Special Exemption & rated as 6th best junior by Golfweek.) Next, one should keep an eye on those contestants ranked high by Golfweek and/or the AJGA, such as Bobby Wyatt (no. 1, Golfweek); Oliver Schniederjans (no. 4, Golfweek); and Denny McCarthy (’09 Big “I” winner; no. 5, Golfweek). Added note about Paolucci: He’s ranked # 1 by the AJGA after winning two events this year. A player whose younger sister is a pro and a rising star! Yep, that’s Curtis Thompson, brother of 15year-old Alexis who finished in the Top Ten at Oakmont after turning pro last month. Curtis, 17, has committed to playing at Louisiana State in fall 2011. Rooting for Burt: In spite of two sectional qualifiers here in the state --one in Grand Rapids at Cascade Hills and the other at The Orchards near Detroit --only one native son will be teeing it up next week. Unless an alternate gets in, the hope and pride of Michigan rests with Holt’s Brian Burt. Of the eight spots earned here in Michigan, seven went to players hailing from Canada, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Texas. In all, the championship will welcome players from 47 states and at least seven countries. Up close and personal: I watched the Grand Rapids sectional medalist –Toronto’s Richard Jung--play a few holes last month and he’s impressive. With muscular arms and a confident demeanor, Jung shot 68-70 at Cascade Hills and won the medal by six shots over Burt. Jung, 17, is on Canada’s elite Developmental Team which receives full-time support from national team coaches and sport science personnel. The course: Egypt Valley will be a scenic, tough but fair test, stretched out to more than 7,100 yards on the “Classic Course” or the back nines of its two courses. Some of the members have been grumbling about the length of the rough for the past two months, but that’s how a national championship must be set up well in advance of championship week. These kids hit it so long (Note: At the last five “Big I” Junior Classics, the longest drive contest winners all have been over 340 yards!) the USGA must place a premium on accuracy. Hence, the primary rough will be a gnarly 3 ½ inches. Given Egypt Valley’s perched and rolling greens, a rock-solid short game—especially with the sand and lob wedge-- will be paramount. At times, it won’t be pretty watching these juniors trying to get it up and down during the 36 holes of stroke play. Many will grow old trying. Spectator vantage points: An ideal multi-hole viewing area is at the second hole, north side of the cart path and on a hill past midway down the rough. With binoculars, this is a panoramic spot to watch players playing the second, third, fourth and fifth holes. On the back side, a spot well short of the parfive 13th hole allows one to watch approach shots to this hole as well as the next, the par-four 14th hole. The beauty of match play: After the first two days of stroke play, the low 64 scorers advance to match play next Wednesday. Match play is a wonderful and revealing format that demands playing the course and one’s opponent at the same time. As a spectator, you can never go wrong following any match because each one is valued the same yet has its own unique story of triumph and loss.
Community support: Kudos to the many generous and understated supporters for this national championship. ‘Giving back’ is a hallmark credo of the Grand Rapids business culture and it should be acknowledged. Three cheers to Egypt Valley, Amway, Foremost Insurance, Haworth, Meijer, Huntington Bank, Wolverine World Wide, West Michigan Sports Commission, Golf Association of Michigan, and the Wege Foundation for being the major boosters. But there are hundreds of other individuals and companies behind this event. Don’t miss it. ============================================================ WENDY'S CHARITY CHALLENGE FEATURES LEGENDS OF THE LPGA ===================================================== We ran into former LPGA star Elaine Crosby at the Michigan Women's PGA Open , who reminded us that there is some serious golf played every year at the County Club of Jackson. It still sits on the original acreage and continues to thrive as an integral part of the community. The golf course was designed by
Donald Ross, the world renowned golf course architect, and has had the honor of hosting the regional qualifying rounds for the US Amateur, as well as the US Open and was the site of the 2005 Michigan Amateur Championship. “I’m deeply honored that Muskegon CC was selected to host the 102nd Michigan Amateur Championship,” said Fred Bleakley, President of Muskegon CC. “I thank the Golf Association of Michigan for its confidence in our ability to produce an outstanding championship. We look forward to working with their tournament officials, staff and volunteers as preparation begins for this major championship in Michigan.”
“As a state association, the GAM takes pride in moving our major championships around the state and supporting the clubs and players that make up the backbone of the GAM,” said executive director, David Graham. “The community volunteer support for this major state championship was outstanding in 2005 and we look for another great championship at Muskegon CC in 2013.” Muskegon CC (a private golf club facility) adds another great benefit for golfers. GAM members have a chance to play this Donald Ross gem by booking a tee time online at www.gam.org under the "Exclusive Tee Time" header. Book a tee time and see if you're ready to qualify for the Michigan Amateur Championship in 2013. ============================================================================== MICHIGAN PGA JUNIOR TOUR - FOREST AKERS WEST RESULTS - POWERED BY BLUEGOLF ============================================================================== Results for contest Girls 16-18: 1 Melissa Beurmann Jackson, MI 40-40--80 +8 2 Chloe Lawrie Swartz Creek, MI 47-42--89 +17 T3 Sarah Dilts Lake Orion, MI 44-47--91 +19 T3 Esther Durling Perry, MI 45-46--91 +19 T3 Laura Glass Portage, MI 42-49--91 +19 6 Emily Hysong Saline, MI 44-49--93 +21 7 Zoe Woodworth Calumet, MI 48-46--94 +22 T8 Courtney Jenkins Pinckney, MI 45-51--96 +24 T8 Allison Goodman Lansing, MI 47-49--96 +24 10 Rachel Swartz Muskegon, MI 50-53--103 +31 11 Kristen Areddy Saline, MI 56-52--108 +36 Results for contest Boys 13-15: 1 Landon Osborne Battle creek, MI 38-38--76 +4 2 Michael Doyle Rochester, MI 38-38--76 +4 3 Justin Webster Adrian, MI 38-39--77 +5 4 Chad McFee East Lansing, MI 40-38--78 +6 5 Nick Margolis Ann Arbor, MI 38-41--79 +7 T6 Kyle Gaines Oxford, MI 43-37--80 +8 T6 Austin Adams Kentwood, MI 40-40--80 +8 T6 Dean Hitt Jackson, MI 42-38--80 +8 9 Bennett Langton Brutus, MI 40-41--81 +9 10 Austin Terris Saline, MI 40-42--82 +10

Taken and edited from a Justin M Phillips release. ======================================================== THE 2009 GOLF CONSUMER BASE PROFILE: SHIFTING SLIGHTLY ======================================================== In the last issue we looked at the 2009 golfer base scorecard measures (size, participation rate, frequency, play rate and involvement levels). In this issue we'll turn our attention to analyzing how the golfer profile is changing across the key measures of gender, age and income. The good news is that it isn't changing radically in profile comparing 2009 to 2008. Since we did have a drop in the number of golfers and the participation rate though, we'll determine which golfer demographics contributed to those declines as well as reviewing which demographic groups contribute the most to the consumer base. The headlines for the key demographic groups that we'll cover in more detail in the body of this issue are: Gender: Women carried the industry on several fronts in 2009, even from their relatively small base. Females held their number of golfers number (meaning the decline is all attributable to male attrition), increased their frequency and had an increase in rounds reported via the consumer survey. Despite those heroic efforts, the small size of the female base simply helped avert a larger loss rather than creating any measurable gain. Age: Much like Medicare, golf is experiencing its own "doughnut hole" among lifestages as the Juniors grow steadily but the 18-54 groups comprised the vast majority of the golfer loss. The older lifestages (55+) saw a rare drop in rounds contribution which, if it continues, could be a challenge. Income: We also saw an expected bifurcation of performance among income groups with the $75K+ group increasing slightly against losses in golfers and rounds among the $0-$35K group. Overall, we lost where I would have expected us to lose; in the X/Y generations and in what I would term the low-to-mid-income range. I would suggest in the current landscape that the lower income group loss is not necessarily a function of "affordability" but rather due to employment and household economic pressures which are greater than the relatively attractive value point of golf driven by oversupply and discounting. Simply put, we're not that appealing to the X/Y generations and some golfers in the low-to-mid-income groups are on the sidelines until their employment and/or economic fortunes improve...
