CIRCULATION 16, 645 Edited by Art McCafferty artmccaf@glsp.com ============================= OPEN THOUGHTS - By Jack Berry ============================= The old Scots had it right – Nae Wind, Nae Rain, Nae Golf. The combination made it a perfect British Open. The four I covered must have anomalies,. I really didn’t have to wear the cashmere sweaters I bought (the dollar was worth more back in the last century) or the rain suit for Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo at the Old Course. Nicklaus won in 1978 by two strokes over Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Raymond Floyd and Simon Owen and in 1990 Faldo destroyed Greg Norman in the third round when they were tied for the lead. Norman was far adrift, as they say there, and Faldo posted a five shot victory over Payne Stewart and Mark NcNulty. It’s a shame Stewart never won in Scotland. He had the name and the knickers although over there, knickers refers to female undergarments. Stewart’s “uniform” was tasteful. Then along came John Daly. I must say he did brighten those dull, cloudy, rainy first two rounds. Daly was a hallucinogenic rainbow, a big box of melted Crayolas. And then he apparently snipped off enough of the material to give Tom Watson the tie he wore Sunday on ESPN. He must’ve given him that shirt too. Well, on second thought, wherever Watson found that shirt, it fit him. My two other Opens were at Muirfield, Lee Trevino over Jack Nicklaus – and, really, Tony Jacklin, in 1972 and Watson over Trevino by four in 1980 with English hope Ken Brown talking himself out of it on Saturday night. There was nae wind nor rain in 1972, just Trevino, the defending champion, chipping in from everywhere. Jacklin, the great hope of the English, winner three years previously, must’ve been thinking ahead going to the 71st hole on a bright, sunny Sunday. It’s a par 5 and he appeared in line for a possible birdie while Trevino was over the green and, in the back of Jacklin’s mind, a likely bogey. Trevino chipped in, Jacklin threw up and Nicklaus, the favorite going in after winning the Masters and U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, slid in for second. By a shot. So, it doesn’t rain sideways and blow like the jet stream. But when it does, isn’t it fun to watch?

That said, Luis Oosthuizen’s seven shot victory certainly was one of the very best in the 139 Open Championships that have been played. He got a break playing early in the second round despite the chill, the rain and some wind. But it was nothing like the winds that ripped the afternoon players including Rory McIlroy who went from a record-tying nine-under-par 63 first round to an 80…a snowman followed by a zero! I know those numbers! All Louie Louie did was drive the ball better than anyone else. He did it with power – 319.4 yard average, and made 20 birdies, more than anyone, and finished third in fewest putts. I know we’ll hear questions “Is he a one trick pony?” Only Tiger Woods (remember him?), Phil Mickelson (still trying to play the 12th hole), Vijay Singh, Mark O’Meara, Angel Cabrera and Padraig Harrington, have been multiple winners back to the doubles of Nick Price and John Daly in the early 1990s. That covers nearly 60 major championships. It’s darn hard to win one of those. Paul Azinger, Davis Love, Tom Kite are terrific players. They won one major. We know Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie are exceptional players. They’ve come so close but haven’t won. Mentioning Zinger and Monty in the same paragraph brings up the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales in October. Can Corey Pavin be the captain Azinger was after resurrecting the USA following the two worst beatings ever suffered by the American team? If Pavin doesn’t read Azinger’s book on the Cup victory at Valhalla and talk with him, he’s crazy because right now, the USA does not look good compared to the Europeans. I liked Zinger’s talk about going for aggressiveness. He had it with Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan and Boo Weekley. What will he have this time? I hope Rickie Fowler makes the team. He can lose a hole spectacularly and win one the same way. I hope Ricky Barnes makes it. And Dustin Johnson who seems recovered from his Sunday meltdown at Pebble Beach. Europe looks to lead in aggressiveness with Rory McIlroy, Alvaro Quiros, Henrik Stinson and Ian Poulter. And it has the home court. Graham McDowell, the U.S. Open champion from Northern Ireland, won the Celtic Manor Wales Open in June on the 2010 Course (that’s its name). AND, BEFORE I RUN out of room, golf today is like the Eagles song: “You Are Not Alone.” America, once the gold standard of professional golf, has a lot of company now. Oosthuizen, a South African, wins The Open. Graeme McDowell, a Northern Irishman wins Our Open. A Californian, Phil Mickelson, does win the Masters. A Korean, Y.E. Yang, outduels our ex-champ Tiger Woods to win the PGA Championship, and a Japanese, Ryo Ishikawa, shoots 58 on the Japanese pro circuit and he’s not old enough to drink a Kirin Ichiban. Kickball can have its World Cup. We have it every week. And, incidentally, how come the World Cup and the Claret Jug British Open trophies are so small compared to our enormous Wanamaker (PGA) and Stanley Cup (NHL) trophies? Obviously, golf and hockey are more important. My last shot is TV. ESPN assembled an all-star cast for its coverage of the Open, major championship winners all – Tom Watson, Andy North, Judy Rankin, Tom Weiskopf, Curtis Strange and Paul Azinger. And my nominee for best sports telecaster of any major sport on all major networks – Ann Arbor’s Mike Tirico. So smooth, so knowledgeable, so great with Zinger. When they’re working together, it’s like Christmas.

=============================================================================== BOYNE'S TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS - MIKE CHUMBLER AND KEN DEVINE ON HOW IT ALL BEGAN =============================================================================== The Michigan Golfer Television team is covering the 19th edition of the Boyne Tournament of Champions next week and we are very excited about it. While you will be able to follow the online scoring via the Michigan PGA website, we will be bringing our viewers a recap every night. You can follow all of this action at http://glsp.com/boyne . To start our coverage off, we reprise a show that featured former COO of the Michigan PGA, Ken Devine and Boyne's Mike Chumbler, who was also there from the start and also a remarkable finish, where Dan Olsen went Eagle, Ace, Birdie or 313, for what was called the "area code finish." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG6_pSrkYjQ =============================================================================== HALL SHOOTS RECORD 62; THOMPSON MEDALIST AND ALEX JONES MISSES THE CUT AT JUNIOR AMATEUR =============================================================================== Gavin Hall set a championship record with his 10-under-par round of 62 and Curtis Thompson took medalist honors at 10-under-par 134 at the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, being held at Egypt Valley Country Club. Hall, 15, took advantage of his 7:40 a.m. tee time and the cooler conditions it brought, veritably lighting up the course to shoot 31 on both nines and come home in a tie for second place after 36 holes. His 62 put him into the USGA record books, two strokes ahead of Joe Monte, who shot 64 in the 2004 championship at Longmeadow Country Club in Massachusetts. “It’s exciting to go out to a course that I’ve played maybe twice,” Hall said. “It’s definitely cool to set a record at the U.S. Junior.” After missing the cut at the 2009 championship, the native of Pittsford, N.Y., was excited to have made his mark on this year’s championship. After shooting a first-round 73, he birdied three of his first four holes and shot five under on the back nine (his front nine), including making a 20-footer for eagle on the par-5 17th hole. “I came in with a lot of confidence, but I wanted to prove and redeem myself from last year because I didn’t make match play,” Hall said. “Coming into this week, I wanted to make match play, because it’s a whole different ballgame. You’re not really fighting to come back. You’re playing the course, but you’re really just playing the person next to you.” Thompson, a 17-year-old from Coral Springs, Fla., started his round on a solid note, converting a 10foot putt on the 10th hole (his first) for the first of his seven birdies. With his longtime caddie, Derek Fox, who spent five years on staff at Egypt Valley, on his bag, Thompson felt free to try some more challenging shots, including sending a risky tee shot close to a cart path but still making birdie on the par-5 seventh hole. “I’ve played with him [Derek] for five or six years now, so he knows all my clubs. He knows everything about my game,” Thompson said. “Somebody else on the bag, maybe a club caddie,

probably wouldn’t have let me hit that shot on seven. But since he knows my game and that I’m not one to lay up, he let me hit it.” Thompson, playing in his fourth U.S. Junior Amateur, relishes the fact that he has put himself into position to bring another USGA championship to the Thompson household. His younger sister, Alexis, won the 2008 U.S. Girls’ Junior. “This is my fourth year, so hopefully I’ve gotten a little better each year,” Thompson said. “My sister won, so obviously I’d like to bring that title home, but in match play, anything can happen.” Hall was joined in second place by defending champion Jordan Spieth, 16, of Dallas, Texas, who made the turn at one-over-par for the round. His second nine (the first nine), however, was a different story, as he rattled off five birdies for a 5-under 31 and finished stroke play at 135. “I knew what Gavin did before my round even started so I knew I needed five under on the back nine,” Spieth said. “So I said, ‘Don’t hold anything back, play aggressive and if it doesn’t work out, it starts over after today anyway.’ “ Ada, Mich. – Results from the second round of stroke play on Tuesday at the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, being played at the 7,111-yard, par-72 Egypt Valley Country Club: Curtis Thompson, Coral Springs, Fla. - 68-66--134 Jordan Spieth, Dallas, Texas - 67-68--135 Gavin Hall, Pittsford, N.Y. - 73-62--135 Wilson Bateman, Canada - 69-67--136 Justin Thomas, Goshen, Ky. - 69-67--136 Davis Womble, High Point, N.C. - 67-69--136 Wyndham Clark, Greenwood Village, Colo. - 68-70--138 Richard Jung, Canada - 71-67--138 Ben Warnquist, Rockville, Md. - 70-68--138 Emiliano Grillo, Argentina - 70-68--138 Cody Proveaux, Leesville, S.C. - 69-70--139 Bobby Wyatt, Mobile, Ala. - 68-71--139 J D Tomlinson, Gainesville, Fla. - 70-69--139 Michael Bernard, Huber Heights, Ohio - 70-70--140 Andrew Lister, Haymarket, Va. - 73-67--140 Shugo Imahira, Bradenton, Fla. - 68-72--140 Marcel Puyat, Philippines - 69-72--141 Stephen Behr, Florence, S.C. - 67-74--141 Charlie Saxon, Tulsa, Okla. - 70-71--141 Zachary Wright, Phoenix, Ariz. - 73-69--142 Cameron Wilson, Rowayton, Conn. - 74-68--142 McCabe Buege, Rogers, Minn. - 71-71--142 Charles Martin, Lagrange, Ga. - 73-70--143 William Zalatoris, Plano, Texas - 73-70--143 Brian Jung, Canada - 70-73--143 Anthony Paolucci, Del Mar, Calif. - 72-71--143 Jim Liu, Smithtown, N.Y. - 72-72--144 Branson Davis, Mckinney, Texas - 69-75--144

The Open, South Africa, Robben Island and Nelson Mandela Night at Tiger Stadium Kudos to the folks of South Africa. This is their year. Luis Oosthuizen wins The Open, their country hosts the World Cup and Invictus hits the big screen. A poignant moment occurred when Oosthuizen remarked that winning The Open on Nelson Mandela's birthday, made it extra special.

Invictus, ( Latin for "unconquered" ) told the story how Nelson Mandela joined Nelson Mandella forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to help unite their country. Our sister channel, Michigan Runner Television, has been running stories on South Africa for two years. Gary Morgan, Olympian race walker and now reporter for GLSP, has been in South Africa to not only cover the Comrades Marathon, but to run in it, a distance of 56 miles. The tapes he brought back last year, showed how the country was getting ready for the World Cup. Morgan also took a side trip to Robben Island, the place where Mandela was imprisoned for over three decades. The video we have selected for you, is one that shows the viewer Mandela's cell. Morgan gives us a very moving piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik7S36JQIVE When Oosthuizen made his remarks, I thought back to a summer night in 1990 when I and a group of colleagues from Eastern Michigan University attended the Nelson Mandela night at a packed Tiger Stadium. There was electricity in the air that evening and a lovefest in the stands. What a night, what a story, what a memory. ==================================================================== 3RD ANNUAL PATRIOT GOLF DAY SHOOTOUT AT TREETOPS SEPTEMBER 3-5 ==================================================================== Treetops Resort is excited to host the 3rd Annual Patriot Golf Day Shootout September 3 – 5, 2010. For two years our event has been a highlight on our tournament schedule and has touched many lives with heart-wrenching and meaningful speeches. Not to mention the great golf that is available here at Treetops. PGA member, Captain Dan Rooney, was inspired to create Patriot Golf Day when he was on a flight from Chicago to Grand Rapids. He boarded the plane and noticed a soldier sitting in first class. When the plane landed in Grand Rapids, the following announcement was made, “We have an

American hero on board making his final journey from Iraq. The body of Cpl. Brock Bucklin is on board and his brother, Cpl. Brad Bucklin, has accompanied him from Iraq to their home here in Grand Rapids.” The airline later asked people to remain on the plane until Brock’s body was removed from the plane. We are extremely honored to have our dear friends Duane and Dawn Bucklin (Brock and Brad’s parents) joining us for our event again this year at Treetops. The planned schedule of events will consist of an Opening Ceremony complete with an Air Force Honor Guard and potential Military Flyover; a Red, White and Blue Glow ball tournament (NEW THIS YEAR); a terrific banquet dinner featuring testimony from Army Master Sergeant Darrin Crowder ( http://www.darrincrowder.com ), whose motivational speaking has already touched many lives and will most likely do the same for yours; LIVE MUSIC from a group of local Middle Schoolers “The Lake Effect Band”, a fantastic Silent Auction and an outstanding 45-hole tournament. For more information on the tournament format, please contact Alex Hughes, PGA Tournament Director, at 989-731-8824 or ahughes@treetops.com or you may simply view the Patriot Golf Day Shootout page on our website, http://www.treetops.com. Taken and edited from a Kevin McKinley release Note: You can see the past Partriot Days at http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=20&sf=added&sa=0&sq=patriot%20&dm=2 ========================================================== 94TH ANNUAL MICHIGAN WOMEN'S AMATEUR GOLF TOURNAMENT ========================================================== Eighty-four of the best female amateur golfers in Michigan will compete in the 94th Annual Michigan Women's Amateur Golf Tournament held this Monday, July 26 through Friday, July 30 at the St. Clair River Country Club in St. Clair. The tournament is sponsored annually by the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM). Players of all ages will compete to become the Women's Amateur Champion. Last year's championship saw Britney Hamilton defeat the 2009 Women's Player of the Year, Christine Meier and Michigan State University standout, Natalie Brehm in the final two rounds. "We are excited to have players of this caliber come to St. Clair to play. I expect the competition to be very enjoyable for people to come out and see," said Scott Rich, head golf professional at the St. Clair River Country Club. The historic, Donald Ross-designed course, with the addition of several new holes designed by Jerry Matthews in recent years, will provide a good test for all players in the field. The course will play 6,171 yards for the competition. The event will consist of two days of stroke play followed by three days of exciting match play competition. Play will begin at 8 a.m. each day. The public is invited and there is no admission charge. The St. Clair River Country Club is located at 1714 N. River Road, St. Clair, Michigan, 48079, just one hour north of Detroit and one hour east of Flint. For more information, call 810-329-7300 or visit the club website at http://www.scrcc.net.

Britney Hamilton (Lake Orion / The Moors) will return to defend her 2009 title. Stephanie Bacon should be a hometown crowd favorite as she hails from St. Clair and is a member at St. Clair River CC. Bacon graduated from St. Clair High School this spring. Hometown golfer Gayle Spinazze (St. Clair / Marysville GC) is also playing in the tournament for the first time. Sibling rivalry could come into play when Shana, Ashley and Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc) who all played for the University of Michigan last season, take to the links. “For years now we’ve all played in many of the same tournaments and on the same team,” said Ashley Bauer. “But most of those tournaments aren’t match play so I think it puts a different perspective on the Women’s Am. Knowing that we might end up facing each other at some point in the tournament would make for a really fun and competitive match. We can't control how the bracket shapes up and hopefully we would meet each other later rather than sooner, but that's a long ways down the road and we've all have to play some really good golf to get to that point.” Ashley was captain for the Wolverines this season and says it is easy to fall into that role when she is playing with her sisters too. Not to mention that as the oldest Bauer, it just seems natural to take charge. But most of the time, the three sisters help each other and function as equals on the golf course. Former champions Joan Garety (Ada / Egypt Valley) and Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll (Haslett / MSU Women’s Golf Coach) will also be competing this year. Garety won the tournament in 1997 at Black River and in 1982 at Tam O’Shanter. Slobodnik-Stoll was the champion in 1996 and 1998 at Egypt Valley and Boyne’s Alpine course respectively. Taken and edited from Susan Smiley GAM releases. ===================================================== BALL WINS 2ND GAM BOYS STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP ==================================================== Jeremy Ball (Bloomfield Hills / The Heathers Club) knew when he hit his 9-iron on the 18th hole at Glen Oaks GC and landed 15 feet from the hole that he was going to end his day on a positive note. He birdied the hole and won the 2nd GAM Boys Stroke Play Championship with a 72-75-147. “I didn’t really know where anyone was in the standings or how anyone else was doing,” said Ball, 14. “But I knew that was a good shot and that it might give me the chance for a good finish. It turned out to be a very clutch shot because that birdie is what gave me the win.” Ball topped runner-up Ashwin Arasu (Ann Arbor) by two strokes. “I wasn’t hitting my driver all that well but I managed to make some good shots on the fairway and make some good hits around the green and that was the difference I think,” said Ball. “My putting was on and off but overall I’m happy with how I played.” Ball will play for Brother Rice next year. The sibling duo topped the runner-up team of Paul Bartkowiak and Evan Bowser, both of Dearborn Country Club, by one stroke. “We didn’t putt that well but our approach shots were good so that is what really helped us more than anything,” said David DeMarois. “We were pretty much hitting the clutch shots.” None more clutch than David’s approach shot on 18 that landed the ball three feet away from the pin. “We made birdie on that hole and won by one stroke,” said DeMarois. “So that hole was the key.” Heather Marks (Byron Center / L.E. Kaufman) and Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings / Gull Lake View) won the Girls Division with a 68 and kissed the trophy simultaneously after the victory. Then won by three strokes over Alex Plemmons and Molly Esordi of Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. The Michigan Golfer has been through a number of stages, print from 1983, online in 1996, television in 2001, a newsletter spin off in 2001 and now in ISSUU, a software that combined with the new iPad, allows for magazines to be downloaded and read at any time. Chris Lewis takes us on a visit to both Alma College and Aquinas College to learn about their collegiate teams. William and Brad Shelton, our father and son team of writers, team up to tell us about the new Pete Dye course at French Lick. Mike Duff, one of veteran writers, joined a media fam trip to explore the suddenly famous Forest Dunes course in Roscommon. Enjoy. The doctor is amazed at what good shape the guy is in and asks, 'how do you stay in such great physical condition?' I'm Italian, and I am a golfer,' says the old guy, and that's why I'm in such good shape. I'm up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a glass of vino, and all is well.' 'Well' says the doctor, 'I'm sure that helps, but there's got to be more to it. How old was your Father when he died?' 'Who said my Father's dead?' The doctor is amazed. 'You mean you're 80 years old, and your Father's still alive. How old is he?' 'He's 100 years old,' says the Old Italian golfer. 'In fact, he golfed with me this morning, and then we went to the topless beach for a walk

and had a little vino, and that's why he's still alive. He's Italian, and he's a golfer, too.' 'Well,' the doctor says, 'that's great, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. How about your Father's Father? How old was he when he died?' 'Who said my Nono's dead?' Stunned, the doctor asks, 'you mean you're 80 years old and your grandfather's still living! Incredible, how old is he?' 'He's 118 years old,' says the Old Italian golfer. The doctor is getting frustrated at this point, 'So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning, too?' 'No, Nono couldn't go this morning, because he's getting married today.' At this point the doctor is close to losing it. 'Getting married!!! Why would a 118 year-old guy want to get married?' 'Who said he wanted to?' ============================================ MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION UPCOMING SHOWS ============================================= Michigan Golfer Television Channel http://michigangolfer.tv Michigan Golfer You Tube Channel (234 shows) http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=20&sf=added&sa=0&sq=golfer&dm=2 Boyne's Tournament of Champions, Boyne Falls, MI Golfing Wisconsin - Grand Geneva Resort, Lake Geneva, WI PGA Championship, Sheboygan, WI Sweetgrass Golf Course, Harris, MI Skins Game at The Golf Club of Harbor Shores ============================= 2010 MICHIGAN GOLF CALENDAR ============================= July 24 MIAGT at Lyon Oaks GC, Lyon Oaks Golf Course, South Lyons, MI http://www.miagt.com/index.php?pg=schedule 26 GAM Father and Son Matches, Travis Pointe http://gam.org 26 -30 94th Women's Amateur, St. Clair River CC http://gam.org 26-28 Tournament of Champions, Boyne Mountain http://www.michigan.pga.com
