CIRCULATION 16, 645 Edited by Art McCafferty artmccaf@glsp.com ================= MG ON THE ROAD ================= West Branch - West Branch CC We caught up with John Thibault, golf professional at West Branch CC http://www.westbranchcc.com/ and also the owner of the club's restaurant, Fairway Bistro. Thibault is entering his third decade of managing the course, after a short sojourn at EMU's Eagle Crest Resort. Having been around for such a long time, he has seen the ebb and flow of golfers in a robust and bust economy. While a country club, West Branch, does allow public play and for many years enjoyed the golf traffic that this easy on easy off I-75 destination attracted. A number of other golf courses sprang up in the past decade, namely The Dream and The Nightmare. Those two, West Branch and Green Briar formed a Golf West Branch http://golfwestbranch.com/courses.html destination that has done quite well, even in these tough times. There are a number of golfer friendly rates available, you just have to poke around their websites. ======================================================= CRYSTAL WELCOMES NATIONAL FIELD FOR WOMEN'S OPEN ======================================================= Michigan Golfer Television will be on hand to bring our viewers some of the action at this year’s Michigan PGA Women’s Open, July 12-14. Three former champions will be paired in the same group when the first round of the Michigan PGA Women’s Open, July 12-14, gets underway on Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa’s signature Mountain Ridge course. They will bring out the firepower, with a first round pairing of two-time champion Elaine Crosby (2001, ‘02), Lisa Fernandes (2007), and Connie Ross (2008). This terrific trio has a 10:06am tee time on Monday morning (July 12) as the quest for this year’s championship begins. Suzanne GreenRoebuck (1994, ’99), who joins Crosby as the only two-time winner of the Michigan Women’s Open, plays in the first group off the first tee at 9:57am. She will be playing with Laura Kueny, Big Ten Player of the Year and runner-up in the 2009 Michigan Women’s Open.

Now entering its eighth year as host of the tournament, Crystal Mountain will welcome 80 players from across the U.S. (14 states) and Canada to compete for yet another $40,000 purse. Once again, the field features top amateurs and players from both the Futures and LPGA Tours. LPGA Tour winner Cindy Figg-Currier as well as LPGA veteran and recent inductee into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, Sue Ertl will be among those competing in the 54-hole championship. The videos have become an important tool in the club's high tech marketing arsenal. Their use of Twitter, Facebook and videos of each hole, have provided what many in the business call a "sticky" website. Once you are there, you have a tendency to hang around. We only have the You Tube video up now, but the 18 individual videos for each hole will be up later this month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keqfuDcxZgI

I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected: A half-gallon of 2% milk A carton of eggs A quart of orange juice A head of lettuce A 2 lb. Can of coffee A 1 lb. Package of bacon As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunk calmly stated, "You must be single." I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since I indeed had never found Mr. Right. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my selections that could have tipped off the drunk to my marital status.. Curiosity getting the better of me, I said , "Yes you are correct . But how on earth did you know that?" The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly." Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Ken Devine for passing this gem on. ======================== ROUNDS DROP OFF IN MAY ========================

After a strong April (up 10.5%), May rounds played turned negative for the golf industry. Rounds played in the U.S. fell 2.9% in May, according to the National Golf Rounds Played Report. Year-todate rounds are now down 3.0% through May. The reporting is based on data from operators at 3,870 golf facilities. Rounds played for the entire year of 2009 were down 0.6% versus the 12 months in 2008. For 2008, they were down 1.8%. For 2007, rounds played were down 0.5%; in 2006, they had been up 0.8%. Regionally, the Northeast and Midwest are posting the most positive results year-to-date. New England is posting a 10.1% increase; the Mid Atlantic, a 5.3% increase. In spite of sharp declines in both Midwest regions, the East North Central region remains up 2.0%; the West North Central region, up 1.6%. Public access courses are showing a smaller decline year-to-date than private courses. Public access courses are down 2.4%; private courses, 4.9%. Taken and edited from a Thomas B. Doyle NSGA release =============================================================================== BUFFALO COMMUNICATIONS BECOMES NEW PR AGENCY FOR REN RESORT & SPA =============================================================================== ============= PGA National Resort & Spa -- home of the PGA TOUR Honda Classic, five championship courses and world-class amenities -- has appointed Buffalo Communications as national golf public relations agency. PGA National recently underwent a $65 million revitalization that included numerous enhancements to its 379-room resort hotel, clubhouse, golf courses, spa, health and racquet club, and conference and meeting space. The resort's storied golf history includes hosting the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship, and nearly two decades of the Senior PGA Championship. Taken and edited from a Buffalo Communications release. http://www.buffalocommunications.com ================= MINZEY'S MUSINGS ================= A new young monk arrived at the monastery. He was assigned to help the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He noticed, however, that all of the monks were copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So the new monk went to the head abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up. In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies. The head monk said, "We have been

copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son." So he went down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscript was archived in a locked vault that hadn't been opened for hundreds of years. Hours went by and nobody saw the old abbot. The young monk became worried and went downstairs to look for him. He saw him banging his head against the wall, and wailing, "We forgot the "R, we forgot the "R"! His forehead was all bloody and bruised and he was crying uncontrollably. The young monk asked the old abbot, "What's wrong, Father?" With a choking voice, the old abbot replied, "THE WORD IS CELEBRATE." ========================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE - SUMMER ISSUE ========================================== Our Summer issue of the Michigan Golfer is now online, our fifth issue in the new ISSUU format.
