Research Question:
How can I, as a young German-Namibian architectural professional, contribute meaningfully to the architectonic fabric of Namibia?
Abstract
The recent introduction of a foreign visual culture in Windhoek, Namibia, has sparked an architectural discourse on identity. It has now, after 29 years of independence, become evident that the colonial aesthetic representation is still associated to the oppressive epoch by the local demographic. Namibia’s shift from an autocratic colonial and apartheid rule, to a sovereign democratic regime has with it seen the emancipation of indigenous cultural ideologies. The country now celebrates diversity yet the social divide designed by the previously mentioned regimes is still evident. This severely distorts the sense of identity within the built environment, which is now in a perplexed state.
