Abstract: Globalization is a powerful force making regional innovation networks essential in economic development. Open innovation is critical to promoting regional competitiveness. It is a collaborative business model that helps to bring together internal R&D talent with entrepreneurial partners to share expertise and intellectual property, and rapidly co-develop products and services. To succeed, a critical mass of entrepreneurs and talented workers must be supported by a business practice that facilitates regional open innovation, collaboration tools, top-class education, and access to capital resources and local and global markets. This event addresses how to apply open innovation in the Merrimack Valley to enhance regional competitiveness for business and economic development.

Provide innovative talent, ideas, intellectual property, patents, products and services for established corporations and emerging businesses Need connections to good funding partners (e.g. aligned angels, prize money, government procurement help) and good technical talent (e.g. good engineers and coders) Seek advocates/mentors who can take the lead in guiding them through the complex world of business planning, investor negotiations, sourcing, etc.

Define the advantages and disadvantages of vertical versus virtual product realization Provide innovative strategies for lowering design, distribution, and material costs.
