How do you begin to understand what is the best rated dog food for your pet? There is so much conflicting information around it's difficult to know what the best is. Especially when you realise that dogs vary a lot between individuals, never mind breed. In order to, at least, start to understand your dog properly, you have to consider where he came from. Remember that your dog has been bred over thousands of years to be what he is now. But he originally came from the wild. This is where his feeding requirements are derived, and you have to be aware of this. So, for a first approximation, you have to understand that your dog, like every other dog, has the capacity of hunting and finding his own food, which he'll eat raw. However, you have to remember that your dog is also the outcome of generations of selective breeding. That's why they are so comfortable with us and we are so comfortable with them. Because of this selective breeding, the diet of dogs is different from the wolf. Dogs are classified as omnivores, not carnivores. This means that while meat plays a significant part in your dog's diet, they need other nutrients as well. At the extreme, dogs can survive on a vegetarian diet (this has to include eggs and milk), but as this has to be very carefully designed and monitored, it is probably not acceptable for the majority of dog owners. I would also guess that this is definitely not acceptable to any dog. As a general rule, your dog should be fed 40% meat with the rest of his diet consisting of vegetables and grains. You have to undertake your own due diligence in determining the best rated dog food for your own pet. Consider whether to make it yourself or buy ready made dog food. If you opt for the ready made dog food then you have to consider exactly which products are going into this food that your dog will eat. Remember that dog food manufacturers are there primarily to make a profit. Some are good but some will try and get away with including the cheapest filler in order to maximise their profits. The ideal dog food is a mix of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water. Their calorie intake varies between 40 calories per pound for small breeds to 20 calories per pound for large breeds.
