CLARA ADOLPHS The Man In Me 10 - 26 October 2014 THE ARTIST 28 year old rising star Clara Adolphs has continued to achieve great success since her first solo, sell-out exhibition in December 2012 at MiCK Gallery. Adolphs has been a finalist or winner in more than 18 art prizes since 2009, along with being collected by industry professionals and patrons. HER WORK Adolphs work depicts people and tells stories. Narrative and connection are paramount in her imagery, which is often drawn from old photographs with a nostalgic feel. Images from the past portray constant and current themes and familiar memories, which the viewer can readily connect with. These snap-shots of life are created through her superb technical skill; of luscious strokes of paint, sparingly and expertly rendered. Her soft and often restricted palette is full of chiaroscuro with the artist concerned more with the paint than the subject being painted. THE EXHIBITION The genesis of Adolphs latest body of work comes from the realisation that her greatest influences are all male. These artists, musicians and writers are mainly from the 1950’s and 60’s, an era that has great appeal to Adolphs. The title of the show, The Man in Me, is a Bob Dylan song and the paintings are based upon her observations of men. “I am interested in the male approach and am curious about the male ego and the relationships and interactions they share with one another.” Adolphs’ figurative paintings are full of narrative, telling stories with her painterly snap-shots of live and living. Her work remains centered around capturing moments and ultimately the wider context of an interest in the human condition.

THE GALLERY Following the sale of the building where MiCK began, we are holding Project Exhibitions by selected artists until re-locating to a new, permanent space. Clara Adolphs The Man In Me is MiCK Gallerys’ first Project Exhibition and is being held at 83 Moncur St, Woollahra NSW (previously Eva Breuer Gallery) from 10 – 26 October 2014 only.
