Brush Fire Starts In Swamp

– Firefighters put out a brush fire that started at around 7 p.m. on April 13 in the marshland area of Cedar Island Drive and Mandalay Road.

Police said that the firefighters quickly put out the bulk of the fire, but hotspots kept popping up. In order to control the spread, they back-burned the area to eliminate fuel for the fire.

There were no injuries or property damage reported, police said. No one was evacuated, however, some people had to be escorted to their homes. That’s because smoke conditions and firefighting equip - ment made driving hazardous. So, drivers parked at Angela Hibbard park and officers gave them rides to their homes on Mandalay Road, Saint Lawrence Boulevard, and the Seawood Harbor neighborhood. The scene was cleared by midnight. Police Chief David Forrester thanked all of the agencies and personnel who responded, including Breton Woods, Pioneer Hose, Herbertsville and Laurelton Fire Companies from Brick; Bay Head, Mantoloking, Howell, Ramtown, Silverton and Point Pleasant Beach Fire Companies, as well as the State Fire Bureau and the Brick Fire Bureau.
