Council approves purchase of Kunzman property
By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center City Council has taken a step to clean up a property that was severely damaged by a house fire earlier this year. Last Tuesday the Council approved the purchase of the Kunzman property at 705 First Street. Funding for the $7,000 purchase will come from the Property Revitalization Program. Any taxes owned on the property will be taken from the purchase price. “This is a win-win for everyone involved,” Mayor Rex Van Wert said. Councilman Dave Stefl expressed support for the purchase, but noted that the city needs to have a plan for use of the property. City Clerk Rich Riesberg said the property is part of the city’s dangerous and dilapidated program and will be offered for sale once it is cleaned up. “I just don’t want to see the city sit on it,” Stefl said. Van Wert said the property may not be ready for sale until the spring. In other business, Council approved an extension of the current City health insurance plan through Wellmark to Dec. 1, 2014. Riesberg said Wellmark offered the extension to smaller communities and businesses as it determines what plan changes are needed as the national health care plan goes fully into effect. Council approved a resolution requesting the assistance of the staff at INRCOG (Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governements), formalizing what the group had previously been doing at the Grundy Center Airport. Grundy Center schools welcome new staff members As the Grundy Center Community School District opens its 201314 school year this week, several new faces will meet the students. Among those are five new teachers as well as a pair of new faces in the administration office. New teaching faculty began work last week and met students for the first time during Monday’s open houses.

Stephanie Hasken Stephanie Hasken is a Middle School and High School physical education and health teacher. The 21-year-old is from Davenport and a Central College graduate. She was active in athletics at Central, playing goalkeeper for the Dutch women’s soccer team throughout her collegiate career and center on the basketball team her freshman and sophomore years. She was also a student strength and conditioning coach, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, wrote the newsletter for the strength and conditioning department and was a certified Zumba instructor. Away from school, Hasken said she enjoys spending time with family, going to church, bonfires, hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities.
Robert Johnson Robert Johnson is a business teacher at Grundy Center High School, filling the position that had been held by Dennis Dirks. In addition to teaching, Johnson graduated from Iowa City Regina High School and Winona State University. In addition to teaching, he will be coaching the Spartan junior high football team.
Amalie Guldenpfennig Amalie Guldenpfennig is a new English teacher at Grundy Center High School. The 22-year-old is originally from the Sheldon area and is a graduate of Sheldon High School and Creighton University. She said she has always enjoyed an

Kelsey Meyer Kelsey Meyer is a new fourthgrade teacher in Grundy Center. She grew up in Ossian (in Winneshiek County) and graduated from South Winneshiek High School and Wartburg College. She taught three years in Webster City, where she was involved in the one-toone technology initiative as her building’s first-grade technology representative. Grundy Family YMCA Notes
YXF is returning at the Y on Sept. 9. YXF is an eight-week results-based class that incorporates three days of kick boxing and two days of resistance training. Classes will take place MondayFriday in the Upper Elementary gym from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Participants will measure their body fat percentage each week to monitor improvements in body composition in the eight-week class. A dietician from the Grundy County Memorial Hospital will be leading a nutritional session as well to help participants set goals for the class. Online food journaling will be used during the class along with a calorie goal that will be specific for each participant. This is a no excuse class that will push participants to their limit. Prizes will be given to the male and female with the best results (percentage of attendance and loss of body fat percentage). Sign up soon to reserve your spot. Only 15 spots are available.

More Grundy County bridges to receive repairs
By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — Two more bridges that received damage in this spring's flash flooding will receive repairs thanks to federal funding. County Engineer Gary Mauer said during Monday's Board of Supervisors meeting that the two bridges, both in Highway D-17 north of Wellsburg, will be fixed with FEMA Emergency Declaration funds, which come 100 percent from the federal government. A bridge just east of Highway T-19 will receive riprap (rock) at a cost of $88,000 while a larger bridge just east of T-25 will receive both riprap and work on the concrete abutment at a cost of $287,000. Mauer also updated the Supervi-
sors on two other bridge projects. Work on a damaged bridge north of Wellsburg on T-19 was completed last week and the road has been reopened to traffic. A bridge west of Conrad on H Avenue will be replaced by FEMA, though Mauer said the new structure will be tempered (wooden). The County plans to appeal to FEMA for a concrete structure instead. In other business, the Board: • Approved an easement request from ITC Midwest for a crossing on the Comet Trail in Conrad; • Approved an interfund transfer from a tracer fund into the assessor fund; • Authorized Board Chairman Jim Ross to sign refised letter of allowance of military property tax exemption.
Pioneer Craft Fair planned for Sept. 8 Plans are well under way for the 34th Annual Pioneer Craft Fair on September 8 in Morrison. The event begins at 11 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. The event takes place at the Grundy County Heritage Museum at 204 4th Street in Morrison. and friends, attending her children’s sporting events and motorcycle rides with her husband. Chad Wagner Chad Wagner is the Grundy Center Community School District’s new business manager. The 36-yearold is a Webster City native and UNI graduate and had previously worked as an auditor with Nolte, Coinman and Johnson PC specializing in school audits. A desire to live in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area attracted him to the shared business manager position at Hudson and Grundy Center. Away from work he said he enjoys fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends.
Council From page 1 finance new street lights. He said the Finance Committee has looked at 10-, 15- and 20-year bonds and would recommend the 10-year approach. He said the committee recommended that the city pay off remaining debt on the Community Center early to help offset the impact on taxpayers. He estimated that would bring the cost to taxpayers to about $20 per $100,000 valuation. Councilman Brian Buhrow reported that a citizen had asked for a stop sign at the corner of 11th Street
and F Avenue. Police Chief Brock Gilbert said his department has patrolled the area and determined that there is not enough traffic to warrant a new sign. Public Works Director Dan Bangasser reported that the city will begin seal coating streets in the near future. He said they hope to seal coat about 40 blocks this year and continue on a 10-year plan that would seal coat each city street. Council also approved a liquor license for Crystal Bowl and a native wine permit for Shabby Shack.
Open house set for new hospital, clinic staff GRUNDY CENTER — The public is invited to attend a free community open house to introduce the newest members of the UnityPoint Health clinic and Grundy County Memorial Hospital family. The event is set for Thursday, Sept. 5, 4:30 to 7 p.m. and features health and safety information, free activities for children, an ambulance and Lifeflight helicopter on display, as well as a free prescription and over-the-counter drug Take Back. UnityPoint Health /Grundy Center Family Medicine’s newest provider, Dr. Ryan Arnevik, as well as Becky Frisch, PA-C, and Mike Knutsen, PAC, will join new Grundy County Memorial Hospital CEO Brian Kellar to
be introduced to the community. Dr. Arnevik and Kellar each relocated to the Grundy Center area in July to begin their new positions, and are looking forward to meeting community members. Free blood pressure checks will be available. Taste of Grundy Center set for Aug. 29
GRUNDY CENTER — Music, food, fun and the Farmer’s Market are part of the second Taste of Grundy Center event in downtown Grundy Center, set for Thursday, Aug. 29. The Grundy Center Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Taste of Grundy Center to welcome community members back to a new school year with a business expo, food tasting fair and live entertainment on the gazebo. Live music by the Dennis Wayne Gang begins at 5:30 p.m., with local restaurants and caterers set up to give members of the public a ‘taste’ of their products. The Chamber of Commerce will also be introducing new school district faculty members, introducing its board of directors and officers as part of the Chamber annual meeting, and announcing the winner of the downtown planter box design competition, held throughout the spring and summer months. All events are free and open to the public.
Local Sheriff’s Department to participate in upcoming sTEP
GRUNDY COUNTY — The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office will participate in a project with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) which is promoting traffic safety in Grundy County. Sheriff’s deputies conducted a seatbelt survey this past week and a seatbelt usage rate of 94 percent was recorded for front seat occupants. The weeks of Aug. 26 through Sept. 8 will be the Iowa ‘Special Traffic Enforcement Program’ (sTEP). Grundy County officers will be looking specifically for seat belt and child restraint violations, along with excessive speed, stop sign violations and alcohol/drug usage. The Sheriff noted the above period includes the Labor Day Holiday weekend, which is the last major summer holiday and therefore he urges everyone to drive with care. The sTEP (special Traffic Enforcement Programs) are funded by a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.
Grundy Area Cardiac Support Group to meet
GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH) will host the Grundy Area Cardiac Support Group on Monday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Education Room. Please use Entrance No. 33 on the west side of the hospital. Kristi Barnett, GCMH Social Worker, will present and answer questions on the “Better Choices Better Health Program,” a skill building workshop for people with
one or more chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or arthritis. The Grundy Area Cardiac Support Group will meet quarterly on the first Monday of the month. Joyful Noise participating in CACFP program
GRUNDY CENTER — The Joyful Noise Daycare in Grundy Center has announced a joint relationship with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The program will allow Joyful Noise to provide more fresh fruits and vegetables, a larger variety of food and to promote healthier eating habits for children.
Auditor test dates set
Statewide examinations for the positions of deputy auditor and assessor have been scheduled for October. The examination for deputy assessor will be held Saturday, Oct. 12 while the examination for deputy auditor will be held Saturday, Oct. 19. Both exams will be held in the fourth-floor conference room at the Hoover State Office Building in Des Moines. Under Iowa law, a person wishing to become eligible for appointment as an assessor or auditor must successfully complete an examination and be certified by the Director of the Department of Revenue. Local officials can appoint only those persons certified by the Director of Revenue. Applications for the examinations may be obtained from city and county assessors, county auditors or from the Department of Revenue, Property Tax Division. The examinations are given approximately every six months.
Registration underway for City-Wide Sale
GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Community Preschool and Childcare Center is currently organizing a two-day city-wide garage sale to be held on Sept. 20 and and 21. Please call the Center at 319825-3565 by Sept. 11 to register. Registration fees will cover advertising handouts, fliers, yard signs, posters and press releases in numerous area newspapers. Registered garage sales will also be included on the sale map. Each sale will be allowed a brief listing of items, sale hours, sale hosts and street address. Benefit planned for Parkersburg resident
PARKERSBURG — On May 21, Parkersburg resident Rick Cashatt was critically injured in a construction accident and was airlifted to Iowa City with multiple fractures and other injuries. He underwent three surgeries and spent two weeks in the trauma unit there before being transferred to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo for two weeks of rehab and physical therapy. Due to the extent of his injuries, Cashatt has been unable to work and it is uncertain when, or if, he will be able to return to work in the future. His family and friends are organizing a benefit to help defray the medical bills and living expenses which have accumulated since his accident. The benefit is planned for Friday, Aug. 23 at the Parkersburg Veterans Building. The evening will begin with a free-will supper at 6 p.m., followed by raffles, an auction and a silent auction as the evening progresses. The benefit will conclude with music provided by the band “One More Time.” Come on out and show your support for Rick. GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Spartan Booster Club will host a pre-game porkburger supper prior to the Spartans’ season-opening football game against AGWSR Friday, Aug. 23. Taste Iowa returns to Conrad Aug. 24
CONRAD — Celebrating agriculture and locally grown food is the focus of the Taste Iowa event returning to Conrad on Saturday, August 24. Obituaries
LaVerne Everts
LaVerne June Everts, age 90, of Parkersburg died August 14, 2013, at The Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services were held August 19 Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg, with Pastor Joe Romeo officiating. Renise Aswegen was the pianist and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “It Took A Miracle” and “I’d Rather Have Jesus.” Roma Ries provided special music as she sang “Supper Time.” Burial was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg. Dale Hartley, Justin Pluess, Jay Hartley, Craig Gunderson, Eric Everts, Joe Neuroth, Tony Everts, Morgen Miller, Todd Butler and Mark Ridder served as Casketbearers. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be left at www.redmanschwartz.com. LaVerne was born to William T. and Tena (Getting) Huisman on January 31, 1923, near Parkersburg. LaVerne graduated in 1940 from Parkersburg High School. On October 8, 1943, LaVerne was united in marriage with Fred E. Everts at the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg. The couple lived and farmed south of town. Upon retirement in 1985, they moved to Parkersburg. In 2010, LaVerne moved to Parker Place and later to the Presbyterian Village. LaVerne was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active in The Sunshine Society. She was involved with the 4-H Club while the children were members. Throughout the years she enjoyed taking family fishing trips to Lake Pokegama, Minnesota. Her interests included reading, puzzles, board games, collecting shoe figurines and pheasant items. Among family and friends she was known for baking delicious angel food cakes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred, in 2011; an infant daughter, Linda; one sister, Marjorie Huisman; and a brother, Alvin. LaVerne is survived by her five children: Ardyce (John) Hartley of Nuevo, Calif., Glen (Theresa) Everts of Dumont, Marie (Mart) Butenhoff of Marshalltown, LeeAnn (Jeff) Saylor of Benton, Wis., and Gail (Terry) Ridder of Shell Rock; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert “Stub” Huisman and Don Huisman, both of Parkersburg; two sisters-in-law, Esther (Charles) Stickley of Hurley, New York and Vivian Hansen of Centerville; and one brother-in-law, Marvin (Marcedes) Everts of Parkersburg.

Where Did August Go? Where has August gone? For that matter where did July go? Or June? Summer is over. And I’m not saying that because of the crazy mild weather we had during the state fair. Hot temps aren’t gone for good. In fact, they are forecast to be back before you are reading this in the newspaper this week. OK, so maybe summer won’t be officially over for a few more weeks if you are checking your calendar but there are natural signs that it is almost fall. Like the ever-growing flocks of blackbirds and swallows that you see along the roads perched on the adjacent powerlines and cornstalks. Then there are the sounds of cicadas, katydids, and crickets. First, the cicadas start the insect chorus in late afternoon with the ascending zing-zing-zing sound coming from the trees That’s the best way that I can try and describe it. At dusk the male crickets begin rubbing their wings together, dragging a small peg
on one wing across a row of ridges on the other. The result is a series of clicks similar to what happens when you click your thumbnail down the teeth of a comb. Only with the crickets the clicks are so fast you don’t hear the individual clicks. What you hear is a trill or a chirp. Finally, the last singers of the day take over and sing till the wee hours of the morning. Katydids are large green insects that are more commonly heard than seen. Katydids resemble a leaf and easily hide within the upper crown of a hardwood tree. They are named for the rhythmic song they sing in late summer. The males sing in quick bursts of two, three or four notes that sort of sound like Kay-tee-did. The sound is a crisp and harsh tone similar to saying the word zit with a prolonged Z sound and abrupt T on the end. Now say it three times in quick succession. The Killdeers that Shannon wrote about a couple of weeks ago are running all over the gravel roads near
our house in preparation for migration but many kinds of shorebirds have already exited this area. There are a few bird species still nesting but for the most part, that is over, too. The primary exception to that would be the American Goldfinches. They wait until right now to nest thus utilizing the down of the thistles to line their nests. The sounds of the coyotes to the north and south of my house in the evenings tell me that that the pups are nearing adult size and will soon be on their own. Before winter gets here they will need to be. And with the Scheels 3D Bowshoot held on the Black Hawk Creek Wildlife Area this past weekend, I really got in the mood for fall and bowhunting. The results from the shoot will be posted on the county website – grundycounty.org. I’ll plan to tell you how things went and who the winners were in this newscolumn next week.
Northey comments on Iowa Crops and Weather report
DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today commented on the Iowa Crops and Weather report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service. The report is released weekly from April through October. “The dry weather remains a concern as 65 percent of the topsoil and 59 percent of subsoil moisture is short or very short,” Northey said. “While the cool dry weather was ideal for the state fair, crops need additional precipitation and warm weather as development remains well behind the fiveyear average.” The weekly report is also available on the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s website at www.IowaAgriculture.gov or on USDA’s site at www.nass.usda.gov/ ia. The report summary follows here: CROP REPORT Drier and cooler than average weather persisted across most of Iowa during the week ending August 18, 2013, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Although varying amounts of moisture were received in central and western portions of the State, the lack of significant precipitation was a growing concern for Iowa farmers. Statewide there was an average of 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Southwest Iowa received the most rainfall during the week, and had the least days suitable for fieldwork with 5.8. A total of 35 percent of topsoil and 41 percent of subsoil was in the
adequate and surplus moisture categories, both declining 6 percentage points from last week. Topsoil moisture levels rated 25 percent very short, 40 percent short, 34 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 19 percent very short, 40 percent short, 40 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. With nearly all the corn crop tasseled, 93 percent was silking, behind the five-year average of 99 percent. Sixty-two percent of the corn crop reached the milk stage, trailing the normal 87 percent. Twenty-four percent of the crop has reached the dough stage, well behind the normal 60 percent. Some of the very earliest planted corn crop has reached the dent stage. Corn condition declined slightly from the previous week, and was rated at 5 percent very poor, 13 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 40 percent good and 8 percent excellent. With 95 percent of the soybean crop blooming, pods were being set on 71 percent of the soybean crop, well behind last year’s 94 percent and the normal 89 percent. Soybean condition declined slightly from last week and was rated 5 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 38 percent good and 9 percent excellent. Oat harvest was wrapping up across the state. The third cutting of alfalfa has reached 36 percent compete, 9 days behind the normal pace. Both hay and pasture conditions continued to deteriorate, and the amount rated in the good and excellent categories fell 4

IOWA PRELIMINARY WEATHER SUMMARY By Harry Hillaker State Climatologist, Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship Unseasonably cool weather prevailed for another week while most of the state is still waiting for a substantial rain. Temperatures averaged below normal every day this week, as they have for all but one day in the past four weeks. Temperatures approached normal on Sunday (11th) and Monday (12th) with highs mostly in the 80’s but were well below normal from Tuesday (13th) through Thursday (15th) when daytime highs were mostly in the 70’s. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from Sunday (11th) afternoon highs of 88 degrees at Bloomfield, Centerville, Des Moines, Donnellson and Osceola, as well as at Red Oak on Monday to Wednesday morning lows of 42 degrees at Elkader and Belle Plaine. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 5.9 degrees below normal. Thunderstorms brought very welcome rain to parts of north central and central Iowa on Sunday (11th) night with a maximum reported amount of
2.27 inches at Boone. Rain was also widespread across the southwest onethird of the state on Wednesday night with Underwood (Pottawattamie Co.) reporting the most with 3.85 inches. However, parts of the state, particularly the far southeast, received no rain for the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.44 inches while normal for the week is 0.98 inches. This was the sixth week of the past seven to bring less than normal rainfall.

Civil War Battlefield Surgery By SUE ECKHOFF Grundy County Heritage Museum Against common belief, Civil War surgeons were not heartless, nor were they totally incompetent. There were certainly those who were not competent, but to lump all surgeons into that category was an injustice. In the battle of Antietam, devotion to duty caused some medical officers to lose their lives. If any objection were to be made against surgery in the field it would be the efforts on the part of surgeons to practice “conservative surgery” to too great an extent. The slow moving minie bullet used during the Civil War caused catastrophic injuries. The minie ball that struck John Hoods leg at Chickamauga destroyed 5 inches of his upper thigh bone. This left surgeons with no choice but to amputate, his leg was removed only four and one half inches away from his body. Injuries like Hoods had an 83% mortality rate. The closer to the body the amputation was done, the more chance there was that the wound would be mortal. The most common Civil War surgery was amputation. Missing arms and legs were permanent, very visible reminders of the war. Amputees ranged from the highest ranking officers like John B. Hood and Stonewall Jackson all the way down to enlisted men like Corporal C.N. Lapham of the 1st Vermont cavalry who lost both of his legs to a cannon ball. With three out of four wounds being to extremities, the Federal Army had 30,000 amputations. It would not be out of the ordinary for the wait for treatment to be up to two days. When treatment was finally done it was not done antiseptically, surgeons did not perform careful hand washing before operating. The doctors wore blood spattered clothes and when something was dropped it was simply rinsed in cool, often bloody water. They used sponges and instruments that had been used in previous cases and simply dipped them in water before using them again. The injuries to be dealt with were dreadful. The minie ball bullet left large gaping holes, splintered bones and destroyed muscle, arteries and tissue beyond any possible repair. Those shot through the body or the head would not be expected to live. The problem was that on the whole, Civil War doctors were not incompetent as doctors, but as surgeons. Of the 11,000 Northern physicians, only 500 had performed surgery. In the confederacy it was worse. Of 3,000, only 27 had done surgery. Many got their first introduction to surgery on the battlefield. The field hospital was hell on earth. Surgeons would stand over the operating table for hours without a let-up. Man screamed in delirium, calling for loved ones. They worked under a crude system of triage. Wounds through the head, belly or chest were left to one side, because they would most likely die. As cruel and crude as it sounds, it allowed doctors to save previous time to operate on the ones that could be saved. The surgeon would wash out the wound with a cloth, probe for cloth, bone splinters, or the bullet. If the bone was broken or a major blood vessel torn, he would often decide on amputation. He would then administer chloroform (which was in widespread use, contrary to opinion). Then he would take his scalpel and make an incision through the skin and muscle and down to the bone, making incisions above and below the wound, leaving a flap of skin on one side, then saw through the bone until it was severed, tie off the arteries, scrap the bone smooth, and pull the flap of skin across and sew closed, leaving a drainage hole. A good surgeon could amputate a leg in less than 10 minutes. If the soldier was lucky he would recover without “surgical fever” (pyemia or gangrene). Pyemia was the most deadly; it was a form of blood poisoning and had a mortality rate of ninety percent.

Jenn Pierce and Wade Vande Vooren are happy to announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage. Jenn is the daughter of Don and Virginia Pierce. She graduated from Mount Marty College in 2000 with a major in early childhood education and religious education. She is employed at Apple Tree Children’s Center as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher. Wade is the son of Mark and Wande Vande Vooren. He graduated from Southeast Tech in 2000 with a major in surgical tech. He is employed at Rosenbaur America. He designs and installs the plumbing systems on fire trucks. The wedding will be held at the First Lutheran Church, Colton, S.D., on September 28. The couple plans to reside in Colton, S.D.
Dirks reunion
It was Saturday morning and the DNH Mom's met at the Dike New Hartford Auditorium for a special Mom Football Camp. OK Gramdma's were there also. Coach Betts welcomed 55 gals to the learning camp. The camp info went like this: Football basics, equipment, transition, and strength training . Then it was outside with the football players and we learned more about offense, defense, and then if you watched the 6 and 10 news you got to watch several Moms make hard hits on their player sons and a few even caught passes. It was then back inside for instructions on following the calls made by the officials. Dustin Lutterman, football official from Grundy Center , discussed the many things the officials look for during a game. Each Mom and Grandma at the camp received a handout explaining all the signals an official will use. So guys be sure to make the right call as we will be watching. Refreshment were served and watch for those ladies were their new t-shirts. Coach Betts tells us the first game will be August 30 against Grundy Center in Grundy Center. See you there!!
The 47th annual Dirks reunion was attended by 26 descendants on August 11 at Park Place Party Room. Thelma Dirks was the oldest person present and Bev Dirks was the youngest. Wayne Eilers led the group in prayer before the meal. Judy Eilers read the 2012 minutes. Updates were handed out. Changes in the family were four births, three deaths and one marriage. Another reunion will be held in 2014 on the second Sunday in August at Park Place Party Room. Thelma Dirks family will host the 2014 reunion.

August 14, 2013 The Dike City Council met in regular session on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. with Mayor Soppe presiding. Council members present were: Chad Cutsforth, Rob Weissenfluh, Nick Cleveland and Luke Osterhaus. Absent: Wayne Paige. Also present were: Mike Camarata, B. J. Jorgensen, Joe Becker, Dan McGinnis with Central Iowa Water, Nathan Casey and Gary Bruns with McClure Engineering, Shane Metz, Zeb Stanbrough, Dave Pruin, Bob Haugebak, Kelly Nicholson, Dave and Annette Steinfeldt and Mike Menke. Consent Agenda – Motion by Cutsforth to approve the following in the consent agenda: Sheriff’s report, library report, approval of minutes as presented and delinquent utility accounts. JP’s Beer Garden Permit – JP’s is hosting part of a poker run on Saturday, August 31 in the afternoon. He would like to extend his beer garden from the alley in back to the north side of State St. He would like to fence off at the alley on State St. to the corner of State and Main. He will be fencing the entire area. Motion by Weissenfluh to approve the permit providing that the insurance is in place and that everything is wrapped up by midnight. Seconded by Cleveland. All ayes. Carried. Grundy County Sheriff Agreement – Motion by Osterhaus to approve the agreement. Seconded by Cutsforth. All ayes. Carried. Superintendant’s Report – The electric line has been run to the cell tower west of town. Metz stated that he did a lot of the work. He also was given leftover wire from the cell tower which he has sold as scrap. He would like to use the leftover savings from the cell tower payment and the money from scrap to buy electric meters. The new meters are more accurate and it would speed up meter reading. More discussion at the September meeting. He would like the council to discuss hiring a third man. He stated that they had talked about working with two men and a part-time person for a while. He feels that there are lots of projects that are not getting done and he is concerned about safety with someone working alone on some projects. More discussion at the September meeting. He stated that the street project should be done by Thursday or Friday. There is no date set on the North St. project. Discussion of Water and Drainage Problems on Daisy St. –Several residents of Daisy St. discussed issues with water backing up in basements on Daisy St. when there is a significant amount of rainfall. McClure Engineering - Engineers with McClure discussed the waste water plant. They are working on a plan for updates on the plant. Discussion about funding. Discussion about problem areas in Dike. Discussion about water/ sewer rates. Discussion about a contract with McClure and payment to them for $18,530.00 which includes doing the paperwork for a State Revolving Loan. Cleveland introduced Resolution #814131, A RESOLUTION TO MOVE FORWARD WITH STATE REVOLVING LOAN PAPERWORK AND SIGN THE CONTRACT WITH MCCLURE ENGINEERING, and moved that it be adopted. Renewable Energy Agreement – This has been given to the attorney. Sump Pump Discussion – Metz stated that Rural Water Association will be assisting with a smoke test. Letters will be sent out discussion the reason for the smoke test along with a copy of the new sump pump ordinance. The new ordinance was given to the council and will be placed on the September agenda. Central Iowa Water Discussion – Dan McGinnis discussed the revised contract. CIW would help in selling the booster pump when the time comes if we sign the contract. Discussion about the tower and master meter sites. New wording was added to the contract that the City would purchase a site and transfer it to CIW or the City would pay them $20,000.00 and they would find the site. Board of Directors: Public Hearing & Regular Meeting Grundy Center Community School District Monday, August 12, 2013 5:00 PM PUBLIC MEETING: The Grundy Center Community School District Board of Directors held a public hearing in the Administration Board room on Monday, August 12, 2013. President Knaack called the public hearing to order at 5:05 PM. Roll Call: Present: President Knaack & Directors Mathews, Venenga, Johanns, and Mackie Absent: None Administration: Murra, VanderPol, Miller, Lebo, Ackerman Visitors: John Jensen (Grundy Register) & Jan Lindeman President Knaack opened the Public Hearing at 5:05 PM and asked for public comments for or against the proposed Tornado Safe Room project. Hearing none, President Knaack called for a motion to close the public hearing. Motion was made by Director Mathews, seconded by Director Mackie to close the Public Hearing at 5:07 PM. Motion carried unanimously. REGULAR MEETING: The Grundy Center Community School District Board of Directors held a regular meeting in the Administration Board room on Monday, August 12, 2013. Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations put the issue concisely: “Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and therefore a basic human right.” In the United States and in most of the developed world we take water for granted. We turn on the faucet and out pours clean water, but in much of the developing world this is not the case. According to the World Health Organization, over 2 billion people gained access to clean water between 1990 and 2010, but roughly 11% of the global population (783 million people) still lacks access to clean water, and since we cannot live for more than a few days without water, this remains a pressing issue. Threethousand children die each day from diarrheal illness, largely a result of not having clean water. So what can we do about it? We can start by donating to organizations which help in this regard. Water.org is a charity which works to bring clean water to these communities struggling with clean water issues. We should consider buying one of their water bottles, which might save us money on bottled water while supporting a good cause.

Spartans, Cougars kick off football season Friday By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — The 2013 high school football season kicks off in Grundy Center Friday with the renewal of an area rivalry. Grundy Center and AGWSR open against one another the week before most teams start for the fourth consecutive year. Both teams return talent on both sides of the ball. The Spartans feature a returning starter at quarterback and a pair of former all-staters in the lineup while AGWSR returns a pair of quarterbacks with starting experience and four of five starters from an outstanding offensive line. AGWSR comes into the season with hopes of earning its first playoff berth since 2005 after barely missing a spot last year. The Cougars feature one of the area's top rushing games, with four of their top six rushers back from a team that had six players rush for more than 200 yards. Coach Skip Eckhardt's team worked from a variety of formations a year ago while putting power at the point of attack. Grundy Center also has its sights set on the postseason after barely missing a second straight playoff berth a year ago. Second-year coach Brent Thoren has had a year to establish his offensive and defensive systems, and the team has spent extra time working on its passing game over the summer. Unlike AGWSR's power formula, the Spartans are more likely to spread opponents out in an attempt to get ball carriers into space. Thoren also showed a willingness to adapt to his team's strength a year ago, switching to a more run-
oriented philosophy during the season after the Spartan passing game struggled. Scouting the Spartans The Spartans return many of their offensive weapons from a year ago, including their top passer and four of their top five rushers. Brock Rohler established himself at the quarterback position the second half of the season a year ago, throwing for 350 yards and five touchdowns. Though leading rusher Dylan Lyman has graduated and is attempting to walk on at Iowa State, The Spartans have four other experience ball carriers to turn to. Senior Nick Mauer had a promising start to the season with 185 yards and a 7.1 yards per carry average in Grundy Center's first three games before an injury ended his season. Bryce Moats ran for 453 yards and averaged six yards per carry last year while earning second-team all-district honors and Jordan Clapp ran for 115 yards from the fullback position. The Spartans' fourth returning rusher, Sam Thompson, will likely have his hands on the football as much as anybody this year, though it will be from the center position. GC's offensive line is anchored by a pair of talented returnees. Senior Brady Hook earned first-team all-district and third-team all-state honors a year ago while Nick Saak brings good size and experience. Defensively the Spartans must replace their top three tacklers from a year ago. Hook is the top returnee, having recorded 45 tackles last year including eight for lost yardage. If the Spartans can hold their own on the line, they have the ability to take the Cougars out of what they want to do. As with any opening week game, the team that makes fewer mistakes will likely score the victory. Turnovers could easily play a factor, as could penalties. If the game comes down to the kicking game, Grundy Center features an established placekicker (Rohler) and punter (Clapp) while AGWSR will be breaking in a new punter, though Heitland handled placekicking duties a year ago. Other returning line starters include Dillin Hofmeister, Derek Schipper and Jeremiah Clemons as well as tight end Austin Heitland, who joined Bakker on the all-district first team last year. Though the Cougars graduated leading rusher Nick Pieters, they return four of their next five rushing leaders including fullback Clay Meinders, a 220 pounder who ran for 348 yards and five touchdowns last year while earning first team alldistrict honors. Returnees Cody Williams and Clay Bohner ran for 283 yards each last year while Darrick Kyle-Murphy ran for 200 yards.
