By Kristi Nixon HAMPTON – Several key runners return to both the Hampton-Dumont boys and girls cross country teams. In order for those runners to improve, times will have to drop. Coach Steve Huling’s girls team return its top finisher for much of the season in sophomore Jordan Prantner. “She (Jordan) earned medals in quite a few of the meets last year as a freshman,” Huling said. “Jessica Speake had an outstanding start last year but then illness took its toll later in the season; hopefully, she’ll stay healthy this year. “Depth may be a problem with only 10 girls and we’ll have to see good development from our freshman runners.” Both boys and girls teams add three freshmen to the roster. Senior Illiana Bartsch and sophomore Bekah Christiansen also return with varsity experience. Among the boys, three consistent varsity runners return, including seniors Jacob Jungck, Grant Lehmann and junior Max Lehmann. “There are good numbers out for the boys team but none of them were under 19 (minutes) flat last season,” Huling said. “We’ll have to do that to be competitive. There should be a lot of competition for the seven varsity spots as the season goes on and that will help us.” Jungck, who spent a lot of the summer running, won the inaugural color dash in April and will look to lead the Bulldogs after a season-best time of

19 minutes, 50 seconds. “We have not set team goals yet,” Huling said. “It’s pretty difficult to do without a core of at least five runners who are willing to put in the necessary work in the summer to be competitive. “Some of the boys and girls improved on their summer preparation and should reap the benefits this fall by seeing improved performances.” Huling said that early practices has shown that the teams are a fun group to work with and that they should see improved times from the 2012 season if the runners stay healthy. “That is the main focus of the first three weeks of practice,” Huling said. “The boys are running four to five miles per day at an easy pace and girls have been putting in three to four. Once we have that base established, we’ll start throwing in two quality practices each week where we’ll throw in intervals, hills and other types of workouts.”

Bulldogs aim high:

Hampton-Dumont volleyball team seeks to improve By Kristi Nixon HAMPTON – The experience is there. Hampton-Dumont’s 2012 volleyball team may have had seven seniors, but the Bulldogs had enough players rotate in to get much-needed experience for the 2013 season. Stepping up after seeing some starting time at setter is senior Andrea Berding, who shared duties with graduated senior Taryn Barz a year ago. Berding tallied 111 assists for coach Cinda Barz’s squad in her first season at the helm. “We had a strong senior group leave,” coach Barz said. “We need to see who steps up in a leadership position.” Another senior who will play an enhanced role for the Bulldogs will be Lexi Sorenson. She finished with 99 digs, third-best on last year’s team. Juniors who lettered and will likely step into starting roles will be outside hitters Jordan Casey and Catie Corsello as well as setter Morgan Kalkwarf.

Corsello, at 5-foot-9, had the team’s second-most kills last season (54) while playing in 63 of 69 sets for the Bulldogs. Casey scored eight kills and was perfect on four service attempts while Kalkwarf contributed with 29 assists, both in limited action. “Our junior team is well experienced,” coach Barz said, “(and) our senior leadership is clear.” Players who coach Barz named as possible newcomers who will contribute include seniors Whitney Ringleb and Carolina Diosdado. Both will play back row positions. Vying for starting positions at outside hitter include Corsello, Emily Casey, Katie Moritz and Alicia Calles. Potential starters at middle hitter are Jordan Casey and Macy Scheideman while four setters are working toward competing for the starting job in the 6-2 offense, including Berding, Kalkwarf, Ashlyn Hansen and Bailey Condon. In order to be successful this season, coach Barz said

CAL numbers up

VOLLEYBALL

Seven freshmen doubles 2012 Cadets’ roster By Kristi Nixon LATIMER – Seven entering freshmen highlight CAL’s 2013 volleyball team, giving the Cadets almost twice the numbers it had a year ago. That being said, a lot of those numbers are also inexperienced at playing high school volleyball. But more good news on the Cadets’ front is that four starters return from a year ago, including honorable mention all-conference selection senior Karter Miller, who finished with 42 kills and 46 assists as the team’s setter. Another starter, senior Jenna Johnson, also led the team in blocks with 22 while returning starter junior Sidney Turner is the one of the top defensive players returning with 69 digs. The other starter back is sophomore outside hitter Dianna Porzio. “We have four strong returning starters,” CAL coach Amanda Rapp said. “But we are young with little

experience.” Turner finished 2012 with .799 serve percentage while Miller served up 34 aces. In her first season coaching the Cadets, Rapp tallied a 3-17 record, 1-17 in a very tough Iowa Star Conference that featured Class 1A state champion Tripoli and state semifinalist Janesville duke it out for the conference title. Those two teams, Rapp said, will be the favorites again for the conference championship. She has a higher goal for her team saying that she sees the Cadets “probably in the middle of the conference.” In order to be successful, CAL must stick together. “Team communication and mental toughness,” Rapp answered as her keys to the Cadets’ success. Those vying for starting positions include Miller and Porzio as outside hitters, Johnson and Turner as middle hitters and newcomers freshman Stephanie Thielen and

West Fork has high expectations By Kristi Nixon SHEFFIELD – With a returning state qualifier in Peyton Twedt, an all-conference performer in Drew Engebretson and a very promising newcomer in Jacob Hansen, the West Fork boys cross country team looks good on paper. Ask coach Mark Twedt and he’ll say the team has the potential to be the best he’s ever coached. “This could and should be our best team we’ve had,” Twedt said. “We can be good; practices should be really competitive.” Adding to the competitiveness are returning letterwinners Austin Steil, Colton Rowe, Markus Wogen, Dakota Jones and Kyle Schulz. Among the boys’ team’s goals are earning the Corn Bowl Conference championship and qualify as a team for

state – attempting to be the first West Fork team to do so. Peyton Twedt, in his first state meet experience as a sophomore last year, finished just outside the top 10 by capturing 12th place. He was only five seconds out of getting a spot on the “porch,” honorees inside the top 10, and a medal. Only four runners from last year’s 2A field who finished ahead of him return. Among the girls team, coach Twedt said that Maya Rowe, a sophomore, will attempt to become the first girl in West Fork history to qualify for state. Rowe finished second as a freshman in the Corn Bowl Conference meet behind North Butler’s Emily Campbell who transferred to Charles City this year. She led four runners to finish among allconference for the Warhawks, including Sydney Shreckengost (eighth), Taylor Rooney (14th) and Josi Fjone (15th).

Depth key for Warhawks

West Fork volleyball team returns all-state hitter By Kristi Nixon SHEFFIELD – Sure, West Fork’s volleyball team returns one of the top hitters in the state a year ago. But the fact that the Warhawks have depth should help first-year head coach Abbee Gappa. “I think our biggest strength is the depth we have on our team,” Gappa said. “The great part of having a team that has drastic experience on the court is the different levels of leadership each player possesses. Every player has a role and they don’t try to overstep any of the player’s boundaries which is unfortunately what a lot of players struggle with. “Statistics do not matter to my girls and they hold themselves accountable for their mistakes which you don’t/can’t find very often.” Lindsey Peterson, a 5-foot-9 senior, finished with 424 kills, 13th overall for kill totals in the state a year ago. Only five of those who finished with more kills did not advance to the state volleyball tournament in all five classes. “Lindsey is all-around a great athlete with a good attitude,” Gappa said. “As captain of this year’s team, she wll need to work on become more of a vocal leader. She has always shown her leadership through her level of play.” Also returning to the Warhawks as a letter winner is Courtney Larson, who added 58 kills and 72 assists. “I am also returning a solid outside hitter in Courtney Larson,” Gappa said. “Courtney is just an athlete. She is probably the best all-around athlete on the court. She plays

every sport and is extremely competitive which sometimes is all you need to win. “Courtney is a great asset to the team and has a spark that she shares with all of us.” But Gappa has changed the offense, which she said is a cause for some concern. “Considering we have not ran this exact offense on a court playing in real competition could definitely be a deal breaker for our team,” Gappa said. “We will need to stay strong and know that every kink will eventually get worked out – it will just take time.” Senior Peyton Perkins and junior Ahna Larson will be stepping in to take setting duties. Both of them are new to the position on the varsity level. “They are not as experienced as some but you would never be able to tell that they haven’t set at the varsity level with how they are able to move on the court,” Gappa said. “I couldn’t ask for two better quarterbacks on the team.” The Warhawks also return senior middle hitter Kelsey Nierengarten, who should bring leadership to the team. Gappa also said she is looking at freshman Lexi Bray as a middle hitter, who has had some success blocking in practice. “Any position is up for any player at this time,” Gappa said. “We have had a few weeks of competitive play in practice vying for numerous starting positions.” Gappa points to North Butler, which returns four starters from a team that finished 26-10 a year ago. “I would say there are a few teams that will be in

the running for conference champions,” Gappa said. “I know North Butler will have a solid team as always and I really think that West Fork will be ready to compete with anyone.” In addition to Bray, another top newcomer for West Fork is Kaitlyn Leikweg. The 5-7 freshman can play anywhere. “She has a knack for the ball,” Gappa said, “and anticipates like a true athlete.” The key, Gappa said, for the Warhawks to be successful is to trust each other. “In order for this team to really mesh well, we will have to be able to know and understand each player inside and out,” Gappa said. “I look for a lot of team bonding and keeping a positive outlook. “There is nothing worse than coming off of a loss and pointing fingers, which I truly feel will not happen this season.”

Bulldogs locked and loaded

HAMPTON-DUMONT FOOTBALL

Several H-D players return from 2012, still a young team By Kristi Nixon HAMPTON – When HamptonDumont’s football team took the field a year ago, several freshmen and sophomores saw considerable playing time, including some starting for the Bulldogs. The team underwent some growing pains, finishing with a 2-7 overall record. But the majority of that team is back and have spent a lot of time in the off-season improving. What that translates into success for coach Jerry Shafrath’s team, who is entering his 20th season as head coach with a 78-99 record at H-D, remains to be seen. “We played several sophomores, a few freshmen and three juniors who played a lot of football for us last fall,” Shafrath said. “We return

seven starters from a year ago. An overtime loss to Central Springs (2017) and a 35-34 loss to Osage kept us from the playoffs.” Cole Miller is a junior now, a year after running the offense at quarterback as a first-year starter. He accumulated 920 total yards of offense both through the air and on the ground, including 43-of-113 passing with eight touchdowns and defensively compiled 16 tackles. Miller’s primary target returns in Charlie Flickinger, also a junior. He caught 11 passes for 231 yards and four of the five receiving touchdowns the Bulldogs tallied in the 2012 campaign while averaging 21 yards per catch. Also junior Parker Claypool, who caught the other team’s touchdown, hauled in 11 passes for 192 yards, averaging 17.5 yards per catch. Claypool will also take over kicking duties in which he averaged 42.8 yards per punt while sharing duties with graduate Spencer Tidman, who plans to kick for Iowa Central Community College. Dalton Hanson, a senior, will be back returning kick-offs. He averaged 26.5 yards per return on 11 attempts and brought one back for a touchdown, covering 95 yards on the play. The line returns nearly intact with center/defensive lineman Justin Wenzel, offensive guards Josh Knipfel, Drew Abbas and Mario Peña, center Derek Juhl and tackle Nic Vetter all returning. Abbas and Juhl are also defensive ends while Peña is a defensive lineman. The line averages 224 pounds with the lightest on the line weighing in at 190. Linebacker Kendrick Suntken and Peña will be big defensively, both qualifying for the state wrestling tournament a year ago at the two heaviest weights, 215 and 285, respectively. Two-year returning letter winners include Hanson, Wenzel and Levi Pratt, who caught six passes for 121 yards and another impressive average of 20.2 yards per catch.

The senior class also has a pair of returning letter winners in Tylor Jondal and Eduardo Flores. “The six seniors will provide good leadership,” Shafrath said. “They will see significant playing time.” As for the ground game, a couple of players are back with some experience, too. Chace Klein, a junior, rolled up 217 yards on 55 carries with a touchdown run of 65 yards. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry. Also Isaiah Noelck, who fought through some injuries mid-season, is back after a freshman year that saw him accumulate 342 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per carry and four touchdowns, including a long of 21. The Bulldogs also return Brady Claypool, who had some injury issues throughout the season. It helps that Shafrath adds a few promising newcomers to the mix in junior Bo Brass, Cesar Baez, Tommy Baltes, Logan Holm and Michael Barnes. Brass at 6-feet, 140 pounds, is a split end/defensive back. The rest of the newcomers are linemen. If Hampton-Dumont remains healthy, expectations are higher than a year ago. “We have several athletes who return with some stats that will make major contributions this fall,” Shafrath said. But the task doesn’t get any easier for the Bulldogs. Leading contenders, Shafrath said, for the district title include Waukon, LaPorte City Union and New Hampton. Osage and Hampton-Dumont should battle for the fourth district spot. The preseason schedule also includes tough Denver and Iowa Falls-Alden teams. “I see us fighting for a playoff spot,” Shafrath said.

Warhawks’ foundation is there All-State quarterback returns from 2-7 season By Kristi Nixon SHEFFIELD – All-state quarterback Spencer Halloran returns for a senior season to help the West Fork football team improve from a 2-7 campaign in 2012. The 6-foot, 190-pounder threw for 1,249 yards, 11 touchdowns and completed a little more than 50 percent of his passes (103-for-205) a year ago. His efforts garnered him a second-team all-state nod by the Iowa Newspaper Association. However, due to graduation four of his primary targets who caught 94 of his passes for more than 1,000 yards are out of the picture, including Payton Plagge, Tyler Greimann, Kyle Parcher and Zane Ruger. Halloran will have to turn to junior Evan Sprung, who averaged 17.5 yards per catch, but made just eight receptions since West Fork had so many targets to throw to. Another player who will see more playing time will be junior Deven Heitland, who caught three passes for 29 yards. But Halloran is also capable of running the ball himself. Two years ago, he rolled up 1,003 yards on the

ground with 11 touchdowns and last year added 1,476 last year with 16 more scores. In fact, Halloran needs just 27 multi-purpose yards to reach 5,000 of offense for his career. Second-year head coach Rodney Huber ran a camp a week prior to fall practice with approximately 50-60 players in attendance. West Fork also has the benefit of having two-year returning starters on the offensive line in seniors Tanner Tuttle and Ethan Meints. Lineman Cody Grant is back as is tight end/defensive end Collin Schoning. Other prospective returning letter winners are Jacob Kuhlemeier and Collin Jones-Smeby. West Fork has eight freshmen on its roster to begin the season. Dike-New Hartford (12-1) remains the District 3 team to beat a year after finishing in the Class 1A state semifinal, losing to eventual state champions Iowa City Regina. Aplington-Parkersburg is also right there, as always, ending the 2012 season at 9-3, losing in the state quarterfinals 34-14 against district foe Dike-New

Promising season in store for Iowa

Falls-Alden/AGWSR boys’ cross country Dr. M.W. Snell By Patti Rust Four seniors, several returning letter winners, and a number of new faces add up to an upcoming season filled with potential for the Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR boys’ cross country team. “I really believe this team could be a good one,” head coach Robert Frenchick said. “Several successful middle school runners are out, so I am very happy about that, and I have talent from last year.” Frenchick will depend on seniors Brandon Krumm and Chandler Krukow to provide leadership to the Cadets this year. In addition to Krumm and Krukow, he expects Miguel Reyes, Owen Abkes, Landon Boomsma, Jason Reynolds and Joe Hansen to be among the top runners. As far as goals for the season, Frenchick would like

to see the Cadets gain more respect in the meets they compete in, as well as make a strong showing at two key meets, the North Central Conference meet and the state qualifying meet. To accomplish these objectives, Frenchick plans to continue his approach of pushing a “pack mentality.” “I would love to see my five top guys within one minute of each other,” he said. “The other two should be close.” “I am looking forward to a great season,” Frenchick said. “The times have continued to drop, and I am expecting that trend to continue.” IF-A/AGWSR is scheduled to run their first race of the season at the Newman Catholic Invitational at Mercy Medical in Mason City on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR Cadet girls cross country team is coached by Jamie Maxwell. The team is, front row, left to right: Taylor Risius, Maddy Faga, Jessica Lippert, Paola Cordova, MaeAnna Ubben. Second row: Desiree Folsom, Emma Hampe, Tessa VanBuskirk, Alyson Duncan, Bethany Lippert. Back row: Taylor Dougan, Brittany Fisher, Breanna Fisher, Alesha Terveer and Rebekah VanGorp. Not pictured: Amanda Smith and Eri Siems.

IF-A/AGWSR cross country girls return strong contingent By Patti Rust When Coach Jamie Maxwell and the Iowa FallsAlden/AGWSR girls’ cross country team hit the course in 2013 there will be a number a familiar faces amongst a team that is 18 runners strong. The Cadets return seven letter winners from last season, including Jessica Lippert, Paola Cordova, Taylor Risius, Taylor Dougan, Maddy Faga, Maeanna Ubben and Breanna Fisher. “Maddy and Taylor Risius will be our most seasoned runners, and I will look to them to take on the role of leading our team,” Maxwell said. “They both have dedicated their time to improve upon their running; I can see them pushing toward the front of the pack. Taylor Dougan will be looking at a varsity spot again this year and we will count on her to also pack run.”

Maxwell feels Lippert and Cordova, the team’s top runners in 2012, are likely to continue leading the Cadets to the finish line in 2013. While returning seven varsity runners is an enviable position for any coach to be in, Coach Maxwell is not counting out the possibility of some newcomers breaking into the varsity ranks. “With adding seven new girls to our team, varsity spots might fluctuate from meet to meet. I envision the girls pushing each other to become better runners, developing their character and leadership skills along the way.” Five of the returning varsity runners achieved personal bests last season, and if the off-season work of the team is any indication, several of them are likely to do the same again this year.

“All of the girls have worked hard this summer whether that be through softball, voluntary practice, various camps, Hilltoppers, or running on their own,” Maxwell said. “In wrapping up our last season, it was decided that our goal for this season would be to overcome our fears,” she said. “In order to do this we need to run without being hesitant of who is in front of us, take advantage of every moment and run without regrets. If we are able to live this goal out in practice, each meet will be a success. Our team goal is to finish top three in our conference and top five in our district.” The Cadets will run their first race of the season in Mason City at the Newman Catholic Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

AGWSR volleyball set for 2013 season By Patti Rust AGWSR head volleyball coach Betsy Harms and the Cougar netters are anxious to get the 2013 season started after a 10-22 showing last season and going 4-3 in the NICL-West for a third place finish in the league. “The Cougar volleyball team is excited to put on their uniform,” Harms said. “They look forward to competing and enjoying their time on and off the court as a team. I believe we will be an aggressive team that will give it our all every point.” Seven returning letter winners and eight seniors will lead the Cougars this season. Seniors Danielle Henning and Kim Ellingson return for their final season as setters, as does Olivia Ingledue at the defensive specialist spot. Senior middle hitters Alexa Johnson and Taylor Steinfeldt return to the court, as well as outside hitters senior Madi Fryslie and junior Ashley Sicard. Defensive specialist Annie Wilson and middle hitter Brooke Harenstein round out the senior members of the 2013 team.

“We have a great group of seniors ready to take on the responsibility of being team leaders,” Harms said. “Collectively, they do an outstanding job of being positive, energetic, and true team players.” Though the Cougars have yet to determine the composition of the varsity team and starters, Harms is confident that all players will continue to work hard throughout the season to fulfill their role on the team. She is focusing the team on reaching their potential this season. “Our goals include increasing our communication, positivity and skills to reveal our potential,” Harms said. The Cougars have put time in this summer on weight lifting, increasing speed and agility, and skill development. With a rigorous NICL schedule in store, Harms sees their opponent on any given night as their top competition. The AGWSR netters are scheduled to meet their first competition this season at the Spartan Invitational in Grundy Center on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Cougars seeking to make the next big step By John Jensen ACKLEY — Last year the AGWSR football team took a major step forward with its first winning season in seven years. With a host of returnees from that team, the Cougars have high hopes of achieving the one goal they missed a year ago — a spot in the postseason. Coach Skip Eckhardt’s team returns several starters on both sides of the ball, including its top two passers, top six tacklers and four of its top six rushers from a year ago. A trio of returning first-team alldistrict players lead the way in the persons of senior offensive lineman Trevor Bakker, senior tight end Austin Heitland and junior fullback and linebacker Clay Meinders. “A lot of those kids have played quite a few games,” Eckhardt said of his returnees. “A few of them got some playing time as freshmen and a lot of those senior linemen played as sophomores.” It all starts up front for a Cougar team that averaged 224 rushing yards per game a year ago. Returnees from the line include Bakker, a 237-pound senior who is expected to play left tackle; left guard Dillin Hofmeister, center Derek Schipper and right guard Jeremiah Clemons. Heitland is the team’s top returning receiver, having caught seven passes for 102 yards and a touchdown last year. Meinders is the team’s top returning rusher, having gained 348 yards last year with five touchdowns. Other returning rushers include Cody Williams (283 yards, seven touchdowns), Clay Bohner (283 yards, two TDs) and Darrick Kyle-Murphy (200 yards, 1 TD). The Cougars return a pair of experienced quarterbacks in juniors Williams and Brandon Johnson who combined for 377 yards and five touchdowns last year. Senior Evan Janssen saw varsity snaps at quarterback as a sophomore but missed last season with an injury.

AGWSR’s biggest improvement from its 1-8 season two years ago to last year’s 6-4 team was on the defensive side of the ball. After allowing more than 40 points and 376 yards per game in 2011, the Cougars allowed just 18.2 points and 270 yards per contest last year. “From the first year they were probably 200 percent better (last year),” Eckhardt said. “The first year we gave up third- and fourth-and-longs and things that were inexcusable.” Sophomore linebacker Levi Stockdale led the team with 76 total tackles last year while senior linebacker/ defensive end Carson Lutterman had 62 stops including five quarterback sacks. Other key defensive returnees include Heitland at outside linebacker (59 stops, six quarterback sacks), linebacker Meinders (57 tackles, four sacks), linebacker/defensive lineman Bakker (46 tackes, five quarterback sacks) and linebacker Bohner (34 tackles). Returnee Sully Hofmeister had a pair of interceptions a year ago while Williams and Bakker had one each. Despite the returnees, however, Eckhardt said one of his greatest concerns is on the defensive side of the ball. “On the defensive line we’re probably going to have a bunch of new kids,” he said. “That’s where we’re most inexperienced is the defensive line.” AGWSR opened its three-game non-district season at Grundy Center last Friday and opens its home season Friday against BCLUW. The Cougars then venture to GMG in non-district play before opening the district portion of its schedule with back-to-back games against teams that reached the playoffs a year ago. “Our month of September’s a bear,” Eckhardt said. “You’ve got Algona (Bishop Garrigan), Newman and West Hancock. Grundy’s good and GMG’s talking about a playoff run ... BCLUW will be a lot better. The first three don’t count, but they do count because you want to get things clicking.”

The 2013 CAL football team includes, front row, from left: Kainan Braun, Marshall Ersland, Taylor Rapp, James Yerman, Robert Pals, J.C. Calles. Middle row: Andrew Quinones, Juan Trinidad, Andy Castillo, Angel Cano, Miguel Calles, Matt Miller. Back row: Assistant coach Sean Farmer, assistant coach Tyler Heiden, Caleb Striegel, Hunter Schleisman, head coach Scott Striegel, Iivari Kuula, Oscar Castro, assistant coach Jake Dalluge and assistant coach Jeremy Keehn. (Kristi Nixon/Hampton Chronicle)

Experience is there for CAL Group seeking first taste of success By Kristi Nixon LATIMER – Hunter Schleisman will suit up for his fourth year of CAL football. The team’s only four-year letter winner is looking to earn his first win under first-year head coach Scott Striegel. A senior center/defensive lineman, Schleisman is one of eight players back who have at least earned two letters for the Cadets. He has recorded 53 career tackles, 34 coming in his sophomore season before knee troubles bothered him. “I think he is going to be good this year,” Schleisman said of his new coach. “Because he knows a lot what he’s doing. He’s got a lot of experience and I think having five coaches is going to help a lot because the coaches give us more individual time. Hopefully, it will help us.” Striegel, who has worked under successful coaches in the past, knows how much the senior class, which consists of six seniors, want to get a win. Five of the six seniors are returning letter winners. “We have a core group of seniors that are hungry to have some success,” Striegel said. Senior Taylor Rapp returns at quarterback after leaving early in the fourth game of the 2012 season with an injury. Prior to that, he had completed 9-of-23 passes for 87 yards and carried 25 times for 34 more. Senior Andrew Quinones stepped in to fill the hole left by Rapp, performing admirably on short notice. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound senior accumulated 1,042 yards of total offense. He’ll resume running back/linebacker duties this season. Other returning letter winners include seniors Andy Castillo (guard/linebacker), J.C. Calles (wide receiver/

defensive back) and Robert Pals (tight end/linebacker); juniors Miguel Calles (running back/linebacker), Oscar Castro (guard/defensive lineman), Juan Trinidad (center/defensive lineman) and Marshall Ersland (full back/linebacker). Despite 10 returning letter winners, Striegel is still concerned about lack of experience. “The lack of depth and experience that we have at some of our positions (is a concern),” Striegel said. “How to change to have success during the season.” Three freshmen and three other newcomers to the team does, however, give CAL more depth than it had last year. Among the newcomers is Striegel’s son, a sophomore lineman, who weighs in at 240 pounds. He is dwarfed only by Schleisman (260). Striegel will also benefit to having last year’s head coach, Jake Dalluge, remain on his staff as an assistant. But the task doesn’t get easier for Striegel and the Cadets as he stated that 8-Man District 2 is one of the toughest in the state

CAL FOOTBALL Head Coach: Scott Striegel Record: 0-0 Last Year’s Mark (0-9, 0-7) Assistant Coaches: Jake Dalluge, Tyler Heiden, Sean Farmer, Jeremy Keehn Returning Letter winners (10): Miguel Calles, 5-8, 150, jr., rb/lb; Hunter Schleisman, 6-3, 260, sr., c/dl; Andy Castillo, 6-0, 170, sr., g/lb; J.C. Calles, 5-10, 150, sr., wr/db; Andrew Quinones, 6-3, 170, sr., rb/db; Oscar Castro, 5-8, 180, jr., g/dl; Taylor Rapp, 5-9, 170, sr., qb/ lb; Juan Trinidad, 5-9, 210, jr., c/dl; Marshall Ersland, 5-10, 195, jr., fb/lb; Robert Pals, 5-9, 180, sr., te/lb. Newcomers (6): Keinan Braun, 5-7, 130, fr., qb/db; Jame Yerman, 5-7, 150, fr., rb/db; Angel Ceno, 5-9, 170, fr., te/dl; Caleb Striegel, 6-1, 240, so., og/dl; Matt Miller, 5-8, 170, og/lb; Iivari Kuula, 6-0, 180, sr., ol/dl.

and his team must break a losing streak going back six years. Among the favorites to contend for the district title will be Newell-Fonda, West Bend-Mallard and North Iowa. Newell-Fonda made it to the 8-Man quarterfinals a year ago and returns five players from that team. West Bend has nine back from a 6-5 overall, 5-2 district record in 2012 while North Iowa will bring back five from a 7-3 overall, 5-2 district record team. “We want to compete,” Striegel said. “We need to learn how to prepare in practice at a high level. This way, we are able to compete on Friday night.”
