Harms works last day as city clerk No agendas or plans loom for future By Pat Racette The start of never having to work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. began last Thursday for Sandy Harms. The City of Allison clerk arose at the same time she has the last nearly 27 years - 6:30 a.m. She ate breakfast and drank a cup of coffee, but didnt scurry off to work. Instead she took a walk with her husband, Tom, to Wilder Park. Sitting down on one of the benches at her destination, she took in the peacefulness of the morning; the birds chirping, the pond still and the canopy hovering. Then, the couple turned around and walked back home. Sandy had another cup of coffee out on her comfy front porch when she got back; browsing one of her favorite magazines she never had time to read. She eventually took a shower, realizing this was her first day of many of not having to work. Later, her grandchildren, Macy, 6, and Wrigley, 3, came over to visit, and Sandy made them a couple different homemade options for lunch. Harms’ time as city clerk isn’t officially up until November, however, she built up enough vacation and sick days to finish at the end of July, with her last Wednesday, July 31. No longer will she be sitting in the corner front window office facing Main Street. “It’s hard to believe it’s over, the time goes so fast, Harms said. “I’m looking forward to it. A year ago I knew I this would be it, and I’ve wanted this for a long time. When Harms began in 1986, Chuck Fischel was the mayor, and
city council members included Bill Codner, Bon Heeren, Cleve Trent, Bill Wix Sr. and Jack Cooper. She worked under four mayors, including current mayor Scot Henrichs twice. After Fischel, Cooper was mayor, then Henrichs and Don Wiliamson, before Henrichs was elected as mayor again. “My biggest memory there is when the land for Wilder Park was purchased, she said. “There was just one tree, and volunteers created a road by bulldozing a way into the park. She beat out seven other applicants to get the job, as it was pointed out in an old article at her city clerks’ retirement a week prior. She mentioned the swim pool committee that got the city pool constructed through fundraising dollars, along with the airport that need no city maintenance with Lester Schrage, Doc George North, Jay Schrage and people before them providing it. Her friend and co-worker, Utility Clerk Chris Graser, will now be working with new city clerk Glenda Miller. Harms said Graser was a great working partner, and good, active community member. Though she eventually plans to volunteer, Harms will take her time to breathe and release from all the deadlines she will not miss. She may be golfing with Tom at Greene or Parkersburg courses or just enjoying the time. She plans on contacting people she hasn’t seen in awhile, touring places in Iowa and seeing her kids that don’t live in Allison, Cindy and Clint, in Fort Dodge and Fairfield. But for now, she has no plans,

Sandy Harms no reservations or agendas, only an open mind to take in what each day brings. The city council is holding an open house for Sandy’s retirement
Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at City Hall. Stop by to share memories, enjoy a treat of coffee and congratulate Harms on 27 years of service to the city. The opportunity to meet new clerk Miller will also be available.
By Sarah Freesemann BRITT - Rounds of thunderous applause elected this year’s Hobo King and Queen at the gazebo in Britt Saturday afternoon, Aug. 10. The 2013 King and Queen are Frog and Bookworm Bonnie. The 113th annual National Hobo Convention was held Aug. 6-11. Frog (a.k.a. Gerald Fortin) was chosen King of the Hobo’s 1997. He is very shocked and excited to be King once more. “I strongly suspected Tuck (fellow hobo candidate) to be elected. He is very well respected and great, Frog said, “It feels great to be elected King again and I did not expect it, I didn’t even expect to run again until Tuck talked me into it. Frog resides in Helena, Mo. rode the rails for 31 years. “I was fortunate to be able to get off the rails in June of 2001. A lot of things changed after Sept. 11 and I am grateful and lucky to have gotten off the rails.â€? Frog came to Britt for the first time, 19 years ago. Tuck swears it was 20. “Tuck brought me the first time, and I have come back every year since,â€? Frog said. He plans to attend as many hobo events as possible during his reign. “I will get information out about our hobo community and the town of Britt as much as I possibly can, even more than I already do when I am not King,â€? he stated. Queen Bookworm Bonnie (Bonnie Morris) attended her first convention in 2008. She was dubbed into the hobo community the next year. Bonnie’s husband, Cannonball Paul, first suggested they come to Britt to learn about hobo culture when he was working on his a skit about trains. Paul is in the entertainment business and currently has a “unique, old-fashioned railroad themed show.â€? “The hobo community and Britt were so welcoming and glad to have met us,â€? said Queen Bonnie. “We felt comfortable right away.â€? King Frog encouraged Bonnie to run for queen. “He wanted me to run last year, but I knew it was the 100th anniversary at the school where I work, so I said I would consider it the next year.â€? Bookworm Bonnie resides in Minneapolis, Minn. She is a head librarian for a school and holds a master’s degree. If she were to ever be hobo queen, she wanted her focus to be completely on her queenly duties, she said. The decision worked out as Bonnie will have her opportunity to promote hobos and the City of Britt this year. “I had a lot of support, even the other candidates were pushing for me,â€? she said. Frog and Bookworm Bonnie were elated to have won. By the smiles on their faces, they will surely be a proud and productive King and Queen for the hobo community.

Benefit planned for Rick Cashatt on Aug. 23 On May 21, Parkersburg resident Rick Cashatt was critically injured in a construction accident, and was airlifted to Iowa City having sustained multiple fractures and other injuries. He underwent three surgeries and spent two weeks in the trauma unit there. Rick was then transferred to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo where he went through two weeks of rehab and physical therapy. Last week, Rick was finally allowed to put weight on his right leg for the first time since his accident. Due to the extent of his injuries, he has been unable to work, and it is uncertain when, or if, he will be able to return in the future. Rick’s family and friends are organizing a benefit to help defray the medical bills and living expenses that have accumulated since his accident. Join him at the Parkersburg Veterans Building Friday, Aug. 23, for the benefit. The evening will begin with a free-will supper at 6 p.m., followed by raffles, an auction and a silent auction as the evening progresses. The benefit will conclude with music provided by the band One More Time. . To make a monetary donation, a special account has been set up at
Lincoln Savings Bank in Aplington (under the name Colleen Mennen). To donate items for the auction or
raffle, contact Rick’s sister, Colleen, at 319-415-6252.

Wilder Park adds new loop inside park plus nine more disc golf holes and more By Pat Racette Wilder Park is a sight to be hold, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvements. Likely any great pieces of art, there is always improvements to be made. And the Allison Park Board didn’t sit back to smell the roses at the park, instead they wrapped up several projects recently, including the intra-park trail that opens up the west side by looping around the park. “A lot of people didn’t even know about it [west side], said Park Board President Doc George North. “It’s [the new trail] a good way to get over there. The prairie and the woods on the backside were basically inaccessible, so now you can get out and see the west side. It’s a whole different environment. A little over a mile long, the extension began from the Rolling Prairie Trail that connects 7 miles to Clarksville and ends on the northwest side of the park. The loop goes along the outskirts of the west side, and then circles around the two ponds on the east side. North said since the path was nearly completed two weeks ago, he’s already seen a lot of walkers. All that remains to be done on the path is two-foot rock shoulders along the sides for safety. Through the Iowa Department of Natural Resource’s Resource Enhancement and Protection grant, $40,577 was funded out the approximately $56,000 cost for the path. The Butler County Community Foundation gave another $5,000, while North said TIF funds would likely fund the rest. Also, the Wilder Park disc golf course added nine holes, with only two holes staying the same, Nos. 1 and 3. With 18 holes, North and the Park Board are hoping the course becomes more attractive for people to play. “The Professional Disc Golf Association has a Web site, and they will not even register you unless you have 18 holes, he said. “We intend to get some tournament play next year. According to North, the Southern Minnesota Disc Golf Association is active in northern Iowa, bringing up to 70 people to play in tournaments. Shannon Hull of Shell Rock

A little bit for everyone at TownsEnd wine festival Labor Day weekend By Nick Pedley Sometimes it’s hard for the Harper family to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor this time of the year at TownsEnd Winery in Hansell. “People say, ‘It must be so much fun being able drink wine whenever you feel like!’ But honestly, we’re usually too tired by the end of the day, said Shelley Glenzinski, daughter of winery owners Vernon and Judy Harper. The family-run operation has been buzzing with activity recently in preparation for its annual wine release festival August 31-September 1. This year’s celebration will be the business’s fifth wine unveiling since they opened in 2009, and the Harpers are excited for a great turnout. Numerous events are scheduled for the weekend including free wine tasting, an arts and craft show featuring Iowa vendors, live music and much more. “It’s a wine release, but really it’s a way for us to show our customers, friends and neighbors how much we appreciate their help and business, said Judy. Four music acts are slated to take the winery’s outdoor stage. Tonic Sol-Fa, Scott Cooper, Highway

The business has three vineyards in Franklin county, one in Hansell and two near Geneva, that grow a variety of grapes and other fruits. designed the original nine holes and new holes that are mainly on the western side of the park. “He [Hull] has a couple of brotherin-laws who are pretty professional, and they’re going to get up a couple times this fall to tweak it, North said. “We think we might have to add a little distance to a couple of these holes in the south woods. Due to the new intra-trail, the ninth hole was moved out of the woods and now is located on the backside of Wilder mountain. “Most of the course stays out oon the peripheral of the park, so there is not a lot of play where activities are, North said. Disc golf courses near the area listed on PDGA’s Web site are: one in each Greene, Charles City, Cedar Falls, New Hampton, Mason City and Hampton and two in Waverly and Waterloo among others. The final two improvements at the park were adding a flag to the mountain and names to the shelters. Craig Kramer welded and constructed the new support system for the flag, after Barnett Sandblasting and Painting cleared the material.
“We graded the mountain last year, because we had to take the old flag pole base out,â€? North said. “The mountain shifted, so we decided to build a bigger base‌This is designed so that you can tip it down to change flags and you don’t have ropes or anything‌The poles counterbalance each other, so you can lay it down, change the flag and tip it back up.â€? The new signs of Sycamore, Mulberry and Aspen were added to the three shelter houses for identification. The shelters used to be referred to by number (1, 2 and 3), however, using names is thought to better clarify which shelter is which. Sycamore is the No. 1 shelter (main area), Mulberry is No. 2 (near mountain) and Aspen is No. 3 (by back of park).

Wine continued from page 3 plained the addition of the outdoor stage has helped expand on that. “Highway Home, they don’t have to come here. We’re a little small for them, but I think they enjoy the venue and event, so they come back,” Judy said. The family expects between 600 to 1,000 people to show up throughout the weekend. Though its focus is on wine, the celebration is a familyoriented event. Scheduled are kids games, a bean bag toss tournament and a grape stomp. Participants get the opportunity to kick off their shoes and crush grapes with their bare feet to make juice. “We try to have something here for everyone,” said Judy. “It’s surprising how many people want to do the stomp. It’s just kind of a fun thing to do.” Both Judy and Glenzinkski were excited for the arts and crafts show as well. They said numerous artists from throughout the state would be on hand to showcase their paintings, sculptures, metalwork and glasswork. Additionally, various food vendors, including the ever-popular fried pie maker, will be on hand. “I can’t eat wheat products, but everyone tells me how delicious those pies are,” said Glenzinski. “My brother doesn’t even like pies, but he always raves about those.” With all the other events taking place that weekend, Judy said sometimes it’s easy to forget what the celebration is all about—the wine. Towns End usually has 12-15 types of wine available, and the festival gives the business an opportunity to showcase last year’s wines that have just now matured and become ready for customers. “Last year’s harvest was great and produced a lot of sweet grapes, which makes for better wine,” said Glenzinski. “We’re really happy with 2012’s product.” TownsEnd will be unveiling a new wine at the festival in addition to their usual selection. “It’s called Summer Nights and it’s a blended wine. But that’s all we’re saying until the release,” said Judy. The festival is held to showcase TownsEnd’s products, but the family also explained that it’s a celebration of all things local. “I think there’s two things that set us apart from most other wineries throughout the state,” said Glenzinski. “One, we’re using 96 percent of our own fruits grown here in our vineyards. Two, we have a committment to our community and try to support our local businesses—we support people that support us. To me, that’s what makes us different.”
