The boys in blue Garrison Carter is pumped about his team this year. “This is the first time in a long time that Ogden has had “expectations” on the football field,” says the Bulldog Coach. “It will be interesting to see how the kids respond. “We will feature a group of skill position players who will be very tough to match up with.” His team returns almost every key contributor from last season’s squad that advanced to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs before falling to Mount Ayr.
Ogden got off to a good start this year defeating a very talented Woodward-Granger team who previously had won 30 consecutive regular season games. “We have an extremely competitive group of kids who want to win and who have put in the work to make it happen,” commented Carter. “We have good upperclassmen, leadership and great team speed.” They will have some gaps to fill though, from key letterwinners lost to graduation: Cody Good, RB/FS; Nick Walker, T/
DE, Preston Church WR/LB and Brady Wheelocok, K/DB. Leading the 2013 Bulldogs are captains Grant Heineman, Caleb Frye, Henry Haglund, Kody Hoskins, Jared Adreon, Kolton Christle and Jonathon Thompson. Ogden plays in Class 1A District 7. According to Carter the teams to beat are Mounty Ayr, Pella Christian and Van Meter. Carter, in his second year as head coach here in Ogden, is assisted by Brian Reimers, Rick Hamilton, Chip Wisecup, Alex
Hollingshead and Berny Sohm. The Bulldogs finished third in the district last season at 4-2 and had an overall record of 6-5. Lining up behind center for the Bulldogs is quarterback Caleb Frye at 6’, 175 lbs. Meet the rest of the team. VB coaches looking for consistency and self-discipline
The Bulldogs will be returning all players from last year’s varsity squad. “The lineup will look different as kids improve and challenge each for positions or are hindered with injuries,” says Head Coach Shannon Zinnell, “but they know each other well. This will be a benefit that is extremely rare.” “This season we have many players challenging each other for open positions. Having individual self-discipline will be a huge key in this team’s success.” According to Zinnell, the ability to terminate, communicate and pass consistently is key for filling the outside hitting position. “In the back row, players are working to develop “on the nose” offensive passing combined with defensive quickness and tenacity to fill the position. In the middle keeping hands high and behind the ball are key. As coaches we are looking for consistency, self-discipline, and that drive to terminate and go for that “impossible” ball.” Zinnell says their numbers are up almost 30% from last year, mostly from the influx of 13 freshmen. All of last year’s letter winners return for 2013: Jordan Poock, senior, setter; Kori Kershner, senior, outside hitter (OH); Mallory Melchert, senior middle hitter (MH); Ashton Summerhays, senior, OH; Abbey Gustafson, junior OH; Kylie Westberg junior, MH; Jenna Sheirbon junior, libero; Katie Lowman, sophomore, MH. The coach will be looking for someone to fill the key libero po-
sition after Sheirbon underwent surgery Aug. 21 for a torn ACL incurred during a softball game this summer. Although she will be unable to compete in that position this season, she will be back in 2014. During the team’s earlier practices they focused on building individual skills and did game like drills and competition drills. “We use sport-specific footwork and exercises to build core strength,” says Zinnell. “Volleyball is an anaerobic activity so we focus on short distances and changes in directions.” Dena Christian will begin her fourth season as the volleyball assistant coach. Colton Thrane is returning as the varsity manager and Anna Langel is a new manager this year. The Bulldogs will face tough competition in what is a very strong conference and Zinnell expects Woodward-Granger and Des Moines Christian to be vying for the conference championship come season’s end.

Near record numbers in Ogden cross country After what seemed to be a fairly mild summer, the heat ramped up, just in time for the start of school as well as fall sports practices. Athletes will tell you there was a two-week span that was just grueling. Practice started almost a month ago with hill repeats. Coaches did an early time trial to sort runners into groups and also to give them a better idea of fitness levels. Cross country runners opened the season with a triangular meet with Madrid, Woodward-Granger, Colo-NESCO, Van Meter, Perry and Woodward Academy
(boys) Thursday, Sept. 5 at Swede Point Park in Madrid. What makes cross country a great sport? Bulldog Coach Ryan Kobliska says first, “everyone can participate. We don’t have a bench”; and second, “it is easy to measure improvement. Runners can compare times from week to week.” In his sixth season at the Bulldog helm, Coach Kobliska, assisted by Kara Kruse, sees one of the biggest high school groups since his arrival in Ogden. And what he sees coming up through the junior high ranks tells him the program will continue to be
strong. There are what might be a record number of seventh and eighth graders out for the sport, 19 in all. The high school boys team as grown to 15 in number. They finished in the middle of the pack at sixth place in the conference last season and ended the season with a seventh place district finish. As a sophomore, Trey Thompson qualified for state. With another year of strength and conditioning, he is expected to even have a better year. This year’s seniors are: Jack Roberts, Daniel Nida, Zach Allen and Quinton

Tristan Frantum and Zane Buxton now have a year under their belts as sophomores. Two of the three freshmen boys are expected to help out right away on varsity. Junior high conference champ Andrew Stumbo ran last year with Alex Kester at his heels in most races. Freshman Bradley Gregory will also have to make the adjustment from a two-mile race to the longer 5K distance. Cross country is the only high
school sport where junior high and high school meets are combined. Competing at the junior high level this year are: Eighth graders: Blake Gregory, Jeff Chumbley, Brady Nelson and Gershom Levi. Seventh graders: Cole Bennett, Isaac Lewiston, Cade Barnett, Matt Sauer and Lance Longhorn. Smaller girls squad

Three girls from his six member team graduated, leaving senior Sydney Bishop, and sophomores Blair Williams and Michele Johnson as the only returning varsity runners. Ogden’s freshmen girls, Anna Clark, Mackenzy Schmidt and Sydney Diggs will all be called on to run at the varsity level. While each team can run seven in a varsity meet, only the top five score. This could be an issue for the Bulldogs if they have more than one girl at a time out with an injury or illness. Ogden placed sixth at last year’s conference meet and was tenth at districts. The team numbers will get a boost next year if the following eighth graders stay out for cross country: Aubrey Keenan, Brooke Schmidt, Hannah Booth, Natalie Keenan and Camryn Buxton. There is an equal number of seventh graders competing: McKayla Dozier, Samantha Andersen, Claudia Kester, Aidan Skalicky and Trinitie Barnett.
