Geneva gearing up for first-ever “Market” event Sept. 20-21 By Nick Pedley The population of Geneva will swell next weekend when vendors and visitors converge on the small community for its first annual citywide sale and celebration. The event, dubbed “The Market” by its creators, is the first of its kind for the town of less than 170 people. More than 60 vendors of antiques, refurbished items and handmade goods will be on hand Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21. The Geneva Community Betterment (GCB) group spearheaded efforts and organized the event to raise funds for various projects throughout the town. “Sixty almost seems minute from who I’ve talked to, but when I started I thought it would be good if we got 20 vendors to come,” said Tonya Sanders, who thought up the idea for The Market. “I’ve been working pretty hard on it since April.” Sanders got the idea while visiting a small town in Minnesota. Hundreds of vendors flooded the city’s streets from throughout the Midwest, and she knew immediately a similar event would fit perfectly in Geneva. “I said, ‘We’ve got to do something like this in town.’ There were so many people there,” said Sanders. The Market was created to raise funds for various improvement projects throughout Geneva. The GCB owns the buildings and property located on the old school grounds, which have fallen into severe disrepair over the years. Sanders said the group would like to renovate the old brick bus barn and utilize it as a possible community center in the future. “People used it for dances, wedding receptions and other gatherings. Then it got used for storage, but it hasn’t been used for years,” Sanders said. “It needs a new roof and skirting. If we’re able to get that taken care of, maybe we can think about hooking up water and other things.” The renovations may take a while, but patience has always been some-

what of a virtue for the organization. For many years, President Raymond Silver was the lone individual manning the ship at the GCB. He mowed the schoolyard’s expansive lawn and handled other duties, but a lack of community interest forced much of the group’s activities to the wayside. Gone were Geneva’s annual Bean Days celebration and other events sponsored by the GCB. The committee remained dormant for more than a decade before a handful of Geneva residents sparked life back into the organization. “We’ve always kept it going, but we haven’t been real active with it,” Silver said. “Boy, it’s just hard to find people around here willing to help. A lot of the folks have gotten older, but now some of the younger people are starting to get involved.” Seven people now comprise the GCB, and their efforts have led to the community’s first event in almost 15 years. Vendors will open up shop at the ball diamond near the water tower at noon on Friday and will go until 5 p.m. A free outdoor movie featuring clips of Geneva’s past will be shown at the diamond that evening, and snacks and refreshments will be provided at the concessions stand. Saturday packs a full schedule. Vendors will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with a classic car show scheduled to follow. Local music group the Power Pitchers will perform, and citywide garage sales will be going on throughout the day as well. The Market will culminate with a hot dog and baked bean supper beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sanders was optimistic for a good turnout and hoped the event would raise around $5,000 for the GCB. Each vendor paid a $25 registration fee and additional free will donations will be taken at the movie and hot dog supper. “I don’t know if we’ll get that ($5,000), but we know it’s going to be big,” said Sanders.

Part 1 of 2 Emergencies come in many forms and can occur quickly and without warning. If there was a tornado, flash flood, power outage blizzard, or worse., would you be ready? Now is the time to make a plan as September is National Preparedness Month. According to Wright County Emergency Management Coordinator Jim Lester, emergency management has been around since the 1970s, known as Civil Defense. It wasn’t until after the events of September 11, 2001, however, that National Preparedness Month was created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA. It was an effort to help prepare and educate the public on how to handle such disasters. “It’s important to have a plan and be able to utilize that plan when something happens,� Lester said. It’s better to be prepared and not have to use a plan, than to look back after a disaster and wish you had been prepared. The city of Belmond is the perfect example. They have put emergency planning into effect twice this summer. First came the tornado, then came an incident of a crop duster spraying a school bus with open windows. Reportedly, 40 Belmond-Klemme students and the bus driver were taken to Iowa Specialty Hospital for treatment. Lester said that had it not been for emergency plans already in place, the events could have been even more chaotic. Lester said the best way to describe emergency planning is in a quote (author unknown) he once saw which says, “Emergency Management - spanning the gap between ‘it will never happen here’ and ‘we’re all going to die.’� While there are many plans Wright County has in place for a number of scenarios, perhaps one of the most well-known plans is Code Red. Lester said the telephone program was put into place five years ago. Residents were

voluntarily encouraged to sign up for the phone notification system which sent out automated phone calls in case of emergency - tornado watches/warnings, flash floods (even used to put out a call for volunteers to help after Clarion received major flooding not so long ago), boil orders (Eagle Grove residents experienced the benefits of this call first-hand), and more. It could even be used to send out a notice of a missing persons report if needed in Wright County. “(Code Red) is one way for citizens of Wright County to get their notifications,� Lester said.

But in the past five years, he’s even seen a lot of changes, for the better, with that plan. Even if you are already signed up to receive Code Red messages, Lester encourages you to go to their website (www.wrightcounty.org) and look it over. Click on the Code Red tab on the left side of your screen. There, you can create a brand new account, or you can manage your existing account, updating what types of warnings you would like. Are you a smart phone user? If so, there is an app available for download that will send you warnings wherever you are, as long as that county has a Code Red system. Polk County and Cerro Gordo are just two of the many counties that have the system.

Area briefs GOODELL: The city council at Goodell unanimously voted to ban the use of burn barrels and open burning in Goodell as of Oct. 15. The council noted the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has banned open burning and the use of burn barrels for several years. City officials have received complains about too many people burning items in Goodell that can safely be recycled, such as plastic and cardboard. Mayor Ryan Halfpop noted noted that the city already has a designated burn site where citizens can take tree limbs, lawn and garden waste. Flyers will be posted and included in the October water bills with more information.

Front Porch Gang We just kinda liked bluegrass music, and there’s not much opportunity to play. People playing for their own entertainment. It’s kinda taken off from there, we knew people who played that we invited to come up. People hear, come up and play a couple sessions. This is our 2nd year. I play the bass, and Gloria plays banjo and guitar. Chad Dielschneider (guitar, vocal), Josh Christensen, Ladonna Sharp (guitar, sings, knows everything written) Pat Schiebel (Vocal), Jolene Kubli (autoharp), mandolins, fiddles, the thing with a jam session is you never know what you’ll have til you get going. Me, Chad, Gloria played a little bit together, we like music. The

three of us play in a praise group for church, we don’t play in the summer, so the skills kinda drop off and to keep our skill level up and try different music Great way to learn for inexperienced people, sit down and play, you don’t have to be afraid to make a mistake, people with higher skill become teachers, new songs, new music, new technique. One guitar player started only knowing about one or two chords. Good way to practice. It’s always been something that I enjoy. The focus is bluegrass gospel, but it’s not limited to that. If someone knows a song, they lead it and other instruments jump in. Within the jam, there’s a group of us from

Methodist church, so that’s kinda the core. We’ll work for a service number on Thursday to get ready for summer and if other people are there we’ll play other things. It’s an open invitation to anyone who wants to play, skill level is not a prerequisite. It’s wide open and you can experiment and go well that worked well! We started with a medley, about the hardest thing to do is start and end a song. “I saw the light,� “I’ll fly away� and “Do lord.� The one

that gets the best response is “I’ll fly away.� When we play, that’s the one we get the best response. Almost all of us are self-taught. Gloria started playing banjo two years ago, I started playing upright bass two years ago. 6:30 on Thursday night. And then we’re done for the year and start it up in the spring, people come and listen. We’re not here to do a program, we’re here to play for our own entertainment. We like having people there listening.
