Titans Football to be traditional program By Doug Dornath South Central Calhoun’s varsity head coach Bryan Case fully expects traditional Titan football to be back this fall. The Titans football program, which enters its fourth year of existence, has only one season with a losing record, a 4-5 record last season, but has been very successful overall with a 24-8 record in three seasons including Class 2A playoff appearances in 2010 and 2011. Only a pair of narrow defeats last fall kept the Titans from posting a winning record a year ago as SCC lost close road contests to both Forest City (14-12 loss) and a 2120 setback to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura midway through the 2012 campaign. Case has a career coaching record of 10029 overall in 12 seasons as a head coach including a 24-8 record the past three years as head coach for the SCC Titans program. Last year was the only season in coach Case’s high school coaching year where his team had a losing record. This fall, the Titans have 17 returning letterwinners to build the team around, including some key returning skill position players back in the backfield including senior running back Kyler Case and senior quarterback Jake Petzenhauser. Kyler Case is the SCC record-holder for rushing yards in a career with 1,462 yards and 16 touchdowns. In 2012, Kyler, a three-year starter at SCC, had 268 yards rushing with three touchdowns and an additional 80 yards receiving with a pair of touchdown grabs in 2012. Petzenhauser shared quarterbacking duties with Nathan Christensen (a 2013 Shrine Bowl participant this summer) last fall and

returns as the team’s leading passer as he had 37 completions for 448 yards and four touchdowns. Coach Case expects some of his younger players to step up and contribute immediately. “We’ll have some young, inexperienced kids that will have to step up and fill some major roles early in the season,” said coach Case. “We will need to develop some ‘go to’ receivers.” “Our kids have shown tremendous commitment this off-season,” said coach Case. “And I fully expect to get back to the way things used to be.” Most of the Titans’ returning experience comes from its line as the Titans return all of their starters on the line from a season ago. Defensively, the Titans have a number of returning players who contributed in 2012 including Cody Schoop, Anthony Handlos, Aron King, Kyler Case, Petzenhauser, Dontay Bass and Tyler Kutz. Schoop posted 85 tackles in 2012 and is the top returning defender for the Titans. Handlos had 60 tackles with eight for a loss and a pair of sacks in 2012 while Aron King had 49 tackles and Case had 47 tackles including nine for a loss and two sacks. Petzenhauser contributed 44 tackles and a pair of interceptions, while Bass had 35 tackles in 2012 and Kutz finished with 29 tackles. The Titans open up Class 2A, District 2 play at home against Clarion-Goldfield Sept. 13, in Lake City at 7 p.m. SCC will be at Kuemper Catholic in Carroll Friday, Sept. 20, and at Estherville-Lincoln Central Sept. 27, before returning to Lake City Oct.

SCC Volleyball team has high expectations for a great season By DOUG DORNATH Expectations are even higher for the South Central Calhoun varsity volleyball program this fall. The Titans are coming off an impressive 3111 overall record and an undefeated Twin Lakes Conference record of 10-0 from a season ago. The Titans have received some pre-season accolades already this fall as they find themselves ranked No. 5 in Class 2A before the season even began. SCC head coach Wade Voith said the team hopes to defend its TLC championship, win three weekend tournaments and make a post-season run. “We have a lot of returning, experienced players who learned how to win last season,” said Voith. “We are fairly tall and can hit the ball really well. Blocking and serving will be strengths as well. Ashley (Henkenius) is the best returning setter in the conference.” In all, the Titans return 10 varsity letterwinners from a year ago, five of which received allconference honors including 2012 first-team allconference selection Ashley Henkenius, secondteam all-TLC selection Maggie Anderson, and third-team all-conference selections Haley Birks and Hannah Corey. In addition, junior Tyffaney Toms received honorable mention all-TLC recognition a season ago. Henkenius is a four-year returning starter for the Titans this fall and has been named co-captain of this year’s squad along with three-year starter junior Haley Birks. Also returning as letterwinners from a season ago for SCC include seniors, Maggie Anderson, Jessica Schultz, Abby Collison and Kellsie Knapp and juniors Kori Assman and Kylie Hepp Voith said the Titans have a challenging schedule this fall with a number of strong teams including Ridge View, Kuemper Catholic, Carroll High,

Humboldt and East Sac County among the more challenging opponents this fall as well as the four varsity tournaments the Titans compete in this fall. “We play in four Saturday tournaments and all four will be tough challenges for us because there is great competition at each,” said coach Voith. “We were second three times last year, so we are looking to improve our Saturday records. “This team will be exciting and fun to watch,” added coach Voith. “We do not play at home very much so we hope we can have great crowds both at home and on the road.” 2013 SCC Titans Volleyball Roster Seniors — Abby Collison, Ashley Henkenius, Kellsie Knapp, Darci Lagore, Jessica Schultz, Leah Spyker. Juniors — Maggie Anderson, Kori Assman, Haley Birks, Maddie Brower, Hailey Burley, Hannah Corey, Kylie Hepp, Jennifer Hood, Natasha Klocke, Harley Snyder, Ashlee Taylor, Tyffaney Toms.
