Titans baseball team ready for season By Doug Dornath Expectations are high for the South Central Calhoun varsity baseball team this summer. SCC head coach Matt Carlson believes his team can compete for the 2013 Twin Lakes Conference championship, which is one of the team’s goals, along with advancing in the Class 2A post-season district play in July. Carlson expects East Sac County, Alta-Aurelia and Storm Lake St. Mary’s to be among the contenders for the Twin Lakes Conference championship along with the Titans. “These are great baseball programs and have dedicated players who want to work hard and win,” said Carlson. “I expect our team to battle for the conference championship. We have a blend of senior leadership with younger players.” The Titans have five returning letter-winners from last year’s squad that finished 10-17 overall and placed sixth in the Twin Lakes Conference. The returning seniors with the most experience on the Titans squad include second-team all-conference senior pitcher Nathan Christensen, and third-team all-conference senior infielder Corey Jacobs. Also returning are senior Brett Snyder (shortstop/pitcher), Colin Carlson (third base), Cyle King (centerfield/ pitcher) and Derrick Henkenius (second base). “Nathan (Christensen) and Brett (Snyder) are leaders and our captains,” said coach Carlson. “By their actions, they motivate other player to work hard to succeed.” Coach Carlson thinks sophomore catcher John Curran and senior first-baseman Broderek Pankey are two of the players who have showed promise to
be key contributors to the Titans success the first couple of weeks of the season. The Titans conclude the second half of June with home dates in Lytton against TLC rivals Sioux Central (June 17), Prairie Valley (June 24) and MansonNW Webster (June 28). After concluding TLC play July 1 at Sac City against East Sac County, the Titans have a non-conference game at home against Ridge View July 3 and play their regular season finale against West BendMallard at Lytton July 10. “The coaches and players would like for as many fans come to our games to support the SCC baseball program,” said coach Carlson. “The team does appreciate all the support we get from parents and others who attend the games.” District play for SCC begins Saturday, July 13, in Class 2A at a site to be determined in early July.

South Central Calhoun Softball team looks to improve from last By Doug Dornath Things are slowly but steadily improving for the South Central Calhoun high school softball program over the past few seasons and fourth year head coach Lance Schultz believes his team will improve even more as the 2013 season begins. Coach Schultz noted the steady progress the Titans have made over the last three seasons, where the Titans have won a total of 25 games during that span
including eight Twin Lakes Conference games, b u t prior to that the softball program has only notched a total of five total wins and only three TLC triumphs in the previous five seasons. “Our team goal is to improve in every practice and every game,” said coach Schultz. “We will be extremely young this year but will get better. We want to be competitive, meaning we want to have a chance to win every game. If we do or don’t doesn’t always matter but if we play our best and have a chance at the end — that is the goal of our program.” Returning letterwinners for the Titans this summer include seniors Anna Westcott and Shantell Rasty, juniors Hannah Hildreth and Jesse Schultz, sophomores Haley Birks, Maddie Brower, Natasha Klocke and Kylie Hepp and freshmen Courtney Anderson and Shelby Kingery. Among the top returning players is Haley Birks, who earned all-conference honors for the Titans as an eighth grader, but was sidelined during the 2012 season due to an injury. She is likely to see action in the infield at third base, the position she earned TLC recognition at in 2011. Coach Schultz listed sophomore Cheyanne Hase,
Tracy Wetter, Agent
freshmen Cali Miller, Taylor Hepp, Lexus Doster and Cassi Thompson, and eighth graders Sydnie Schultz, Alison Birks, Kelsi Carlson, Kali Babcock and Vanessa Squier as the promising newcomers hoping to make an impact for the SCC varsity team this summer. The Titans have a number of home games in the month of June as they host East Sac County June 5, OA-BCIG June 6 and Storm Lake-St. Mary’s June 12. On Monday, June 17, SCC hosts Sioux Central and Monday, June 24, Prairie Valley visits the Titans at Lytton. SCC closes out the month of June by hosting Manson-Northwest Webster Friday, June 28. In July, the Titans host Ridge View in non-
conference play Wednesday, July 3, in their final season home contest. SCC begins postseason play in Class 3A in the 3A regional quarterfinal action July 9 at a site to be determined.
