Enrollment edges up at North Iowa Preliminary numbers show that enrollment is slightly up at North Iowa Community Schools for the 2013-14 school year. The biggest jump is in middle school enrollment, and Middle School Principal Jill Schutjer reported at the Sept. 9 school board meeting that enrollment was up to 106 students from 95 students last year. Elementary Principal Cory Myer said his numbers are down slightly, with 180 students in grades K-5, compared to 182 at this time last year. The final tally for enrollment this month is 441 students, compared to 431 in September of 2012. Things look promising down the road as well, with Myer reporting 52 threeand four-year-olds currently enrolled in preschool. Certified enrollment numbers will be determined in October.

• Many farmers chose to give back to their local 4-H clubs. A total of $135,000 has been donated to 4-H clubs across the state. America’s Farmers Grow Communities launched nationally in 2011 and has grown to include 1,289 eligible counties in 39 states. Farmers and rural community members can now visit GrowCommunities. com or call 1-877-267-3332 and register to win or submit an idea for a nonprofit in need of funding. This program is part of the Monsanto Fund’s overall effort to support rural communities.
Conservation program signup deadline is Oct. 4 In anticipation of a new Farm Bill, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is encouraging Iowa farmers and private landowners to visit their local USDA office by Oct. 4 to be considered for the first round of conservation program funding selections. Before submitting an application, farmers are strongly encouraged to discuss the resource concerns for their farm and develop a conservation plan, or update their current plan if needed. “Farmers can help maximize the benefits of conservation financial assistance programs if they have a solid understanding of their conservation needs, said Jay T. Mar, Iowa NRCS state conservationist. “We don’t want farmers to miss any opportunities that could protect their
soil, water and promote wildlife habitat. USDA conservation programs are offered through a continuous signup, but NRCS periodically batches and ranks applications as funding allows. “We want to be prepared and ready to go with applications if Farm Bill funding is announced, said Larry Beeler, Iowa NRCS assistant state conservationist for programs. Two of USDA’s most popular conservation programs are part of this signup: the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). According to Beeler, this signup includes all associated EQIP and landscape initiatives such as the Mississippi River Basin Healthy
Watersheds Initiative (MRBI), Organic Initiative and the National Water Quality Initiative. This summer, Iowa celebrated 165,000 acres of restored wetlands through WRP and similar USDA programs. During the last 20 years, Iowa NRCS invested more than $300 million to bring back Iowa wetlands through easement payments and restoration costs. Statewide EQIP practices include, but are not limited to, nutrient management, terraces, grassed waterways, cover crops, manure management facilities, and pasture management. Each program initiative includes its own separate practice list. These lists are available at local NRCS offices or online at www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov

Guest Day draws crowd of 125 Community Chapel of Lakota held its annual Guest Day on Thursday, Sept. 6th at 6:00 p.m. All area ladies were invited to enjoy a salad luncheon, fellowship and the Chapel’s theme: “Tea and Sympathy, which is an old English term. The emphasis was that the word “sympathy is not just for a time of grief, but actually means to come along side of and be a comrade or encourager. A Welcome Prayer by Diane Coy started the evening. The Community Chapel ladies had the tables prepared with assorted teacups for their beverage choice of tea or coffee. By each place-setting was a small, decorative box with peanuts for guests to take home.
Approximately 125 ladies enjoyed the salad buffet, followed by a reading “I’m A Little Teacup by Erika Knoner. The message “We Are Missionaries, Everyone! by Dawn Janssen and Catherine Rosengren was introduced in an Act 1 and Act 2 skit presented by Sue Griese, Catherine Rosengren, Shanna Hoehn and Karen Dirksen. The devotional theme “Tea and Sympathy was given by Frances Meyer; sharing thoughts on sympathy and the use of a teapot and flowers to brighten us during those times. Singing “A Loving Word from You were Val Ell, Vivian Hovland, Jill Berschman and Lynn Beenken. The evening ended with guests singing “Brighten the Corner Where You Are.

Land available to hunters expands Eight new sites have been added to Iowa’s walk-in public hunting access program, increasing the land available for hunting by nearly 600 acres. There are a total of 7,590 acres of private property on 48 sites available to hunters. The Iowa Hunting and Access Program (IHAP) is a partnership with Iowa landowners who agree to allow hunters access to the portion of their property enrolled in the program in exchange for habitat improvement on that land. The newly enrolled land is spread across the state, but all of the new sites are located in north central; an area of the state with the least amount of public hunting access sites in the past. Hunting opportunities should be even greater this year, as the habitat on the sites have had another year of development. Site maps are available on the DNR’s website showing boundaries, which species would be most likely attracted to the habitat and the location of a comment box where hunters can leave their thoughts on the program. Detailed information for each site can also be found on the hunting atlas at programs.iowadnr.
gov/maps/huntingatlas/. Walk-in public hunting through IHAP is available between September 1 and May 31. “We need hunter input on this program again this year, so each site has a drop box and survey cards to collect hunter comments. They can either drop the cards in the box or mail them from home, said Kelly Smith of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Bureau, which manages the program. Areas are posted with signs, are regularly patrolled by Iowa DNR conservation officers and will be treated like public hunting ground, with the noted exception that it is private property. “Hunters should respect private property, stay on the land enrolled in the program and pick up after themselves, said Smith. “This program is only available because landowners were willing to participate in it. The DNR has a list of tips and guidelines hunters should follow, along with maps of the properties, online at www.iowadnr.gov/ Hunting/PlacestoHuntShoot/ HabitatAccessProgram.aspx

fishing poles, jugs or nets will be allowed. Anglers must remain in sight of these lines at all times and follow all other fishing regulations and area rules. Trot lines will be allowed (name and address must be attached), however lines may not be set across the entire water body. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has relaxed fishing regulations at Rice Lake to allow anglers to more freely harvest game fish before the lake is renovated. The fishery in the 1,000-acre lake will be renovated this fall. This is part of a larger shallow lakes management project to improve the water quality and habitat in the lake. The water level has been lowered approximately four feet this summer to prepare for the renovation. The lake will be restocked in 2014. Quality fishing should return in 2016. Anglers with a valid fishing license will be allowed to harvest any size or number of all species from Rice Lake. Any number of

Newell-Fonda stuffs Bison, 41-14 he North Iowa Bison traveled to Newell to take on the highly touted Mustangs, only to fall behind early and not recover in a 41-14 loss. “The first two games of the season, we controlled the line of scrimmage, which enabled us to win, Bison coach Don Anderson said. “This week Newell-Fonda won the battle up front. Anderson credited the Mustangs offense in the victory. “Offensively N-F ran the ball very well, we played way too high and didn’t do a very good job of getting off blocks, he added. “We did a much better job the second half. Anderson said his squad struggled to establish the run. “Offensively, we got handled up front which stymied our running game, he added. “We had some success passing but still need to work on some fundamental things in that area of the game. Alex Paulson led the offense with 97 yards rushing on 26 carries and five receptions for 36 yards. In all, the Bison racked up 190 yards of offense. Newell-Fonda tallied 326 yard of offense in the game, including 284 yards on the ground. Despite the loss, the coach was still pleased with the effort. “I think we had a good football team, we need to get back to work and correct some of the things that hurting us. The Bison, now 2-1 on the year and will host CAL on Friday night. The Cadets are on a 47 consecutive game losing streak after falling to C-W-L on Friday night, 61-15. Bison claim third at B-K Invitational The North Iowa cross country teams competed in the Class B division of the Belmond Invitational on September 10th. Eight schools fielded runners in Class B. “It was great to have a commendable outing for the second week in a row, Coach Jon Potter said. “Our runners showed their willingness to compete which is important. Class B which we ran in this year might not have been as deep as class A but it still had some quality runners to compete against. The Bison girls finished third with 57 points. They were paced by runner-up Madison Blodgett with a time of 18:04. Brooke Hovland finished fifth with a time of 18:49 while Krista Hovland was 10th in 20:01. Also running well were Christa Miller, with 17th place finish, crossing in 20:37 while Samantha Sevley was 23rd in 21:33. “On the girls’ side, having three medalists was important because the teams that were competing in our division will likely be district competition later in the fall, Coach Jon Potter said. “The course itself was a quarter mile long, so the times are a bit misleading. Madi ran an intelligent race and looked strong the last half mile. Brooke ran a steady race while Krista moved up and surged well during the middle part of the run. “Christa Miller ran a very gutsy race, the coach said. “Where we need to see the most improvement for our team to drop some places is with the fourth through sixth runners; maintaining health and our solid practice habits will be key for team success later in the season. For the boys, Connor Smith claimed second with a time of 17:34 while Daniel Miller was a solid fifth in 18:06. Chance Mayland ran well, finishing in 19:48, good enough for 14th overall while Taylor Ostermann crossed the line in 21:52, finishing 35th overall. Overall, the team finished third overall with 95 points. “The boys came out and ran fairly well against the competition, Potter said. “Our top three runners competed well – to place three in the top fourteen was encouraging. “ “Connor and Daniel were a bit conservative on the start but ran nice races down the stretch; Chance had one of the best races of his career and looked strong doing it, the coach added. “Now we need to cut the gap down between our number four and five runners to help us to be
even more competitive as a team. Potter said the efforts should be a good springboard for the rest of the year. “Hopefully this meet will reassure our runners that the hard work, practice habits, and racing strategies we employ translate into success on the course, he added. “I like seeing how all the runners, regardless of where they sit on the team, show up
and put forth effort. If we continue to apply ourselves as we have been, we should continue to have more positive performances down the stretch both individually and as a team. The North Iowa volleyball team suffered a pair of defeats last week. On Tuesday evening, the Bison fell to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura in three games, 25-18, 25-22, 25-9. “Our girls came out strong in the first match, Coach Carissa Judge said. “It went back and forth until we were tied at 12. It was at this point that they had a server go on a fivepoint run. “In the game of volleyball, it is tough sometimes to come back from a five-point deficient against a good, experienced team like GHV, the coach added. “They had another server go on a 6-point run shortly after that. I was proud of the way our girls bounced back in the second game. This one was a battle until the end. It went back and forth the whole game until we were tied at 22. “Our girls were playing really well. We had the momentum on our side until we missed a serve and couldn’t get a stop in the last couple points. It was a great game and I was proud of the way our girls played, Judge added. “The third game was a different team. We struggled with serve receive and had a few miscommunication times between the girls. “GHV’s big hitter, Emily Matthews, went on a run up at the net. We had a hard time getting a block and when we did get a touch on her hit, we had a hard time digging the touched ball. It’s hard to get control of the game when you only serve nine times. It put a bad taste in our mouths when we left, but on the night as a whole, I thought our girls played great volleyball. On Thursday evening, the Bison traveled to Lake Mills and fell in three games, 25-17, 25-7, and 25-12. “The girls came out playing strong and aggressive, Judge said. “Neither team had a server go on a run. Our girls were smart at the net, we got some great blocks and digs, and were aggressive on hitting. It was so much fun to watch them play this game. It was the best volleyball I have seen our girls play this year. “In the second game, we were a different team. We lacked in communication and struggled serve
receiving and digging. Judge said the Bulldogs took over the match from there. “I give the credit to Lake Mills though in the rest of the night, the coach said. “They really turned up their level of play and took control of the game with serving and being aggressive at the net. If our girls play like they did the first game of the night, we are going to win a lot of games coming up in the season. It was the most hustle I have seen them have, excitement/energy on the court, and it looked like they were relaxed having a lot of fun. If they continue to play at that level and improve their game from there, we will have a very successful season. Despite their efforts, the Bison fell to 0-3 on the year. They were slated to return to the court on Tuesday evening in Mason City against Newman before heading to Forest City on Saturday for the Forest City Invitational. School addition on track for Jan. 1 completion North Iowa Schools’ new tornado safe room and wellness center should be complete by the start of the new year, according to North Iowa Supt. Cory Myer. Myer updated the North Iowa School Board on the construction progress during the board’s monthly meeting last Monday, Sept. 9. “I think it should easily be done by January 1, said Myer. Myer led the board on a tour of the building and pointed out various aspects of the construction. The board discussed the east entryway to the addition, which is not designed to match the other entries on the east side of the school. The canopy over the entrance is currently squared off, and the board asked Supt. Myer to look into the cost for changing it to a rounded canopy with soffit like those at the other entrances. The current sidewalk and trees running alongside the addition on 1st St. NW will be removed so angled parking can be installed closer to the building. On the interior, Myer said most of ceilings will feature an open, “industrial look. The gym in the safe room will feature basketball hoops on the north and south ends, along with two basketball hoops and a scoreboard on the east wall. A walking track passes through the room on the west side on the second floor, and it may be possible to set up chairs on the track to watch games being played in the gym below. The wellness center is located outside the safe room in the east part of the addition. There will be a weight room and locker rooms on the first floor, and an exercise room and the walking track will be located on the second floor. A window will
stretch across the entire east wall on the second floor. There are a total of three entrances to the wellness center and safe room. Each entrance will feature a keycard and keypad system, which will allow members of the public to access that portion of the building, without allowing entrance into the rest of the school. The doors to the safe room will unlock in case of an emergency, which will allow community members to take shelter in the building.
Nick Kahler, center, and Carly Main, right, each show a market lamb during the sheep show at last month’s Iowa State Fair. The two Bison FFA members each received purple and blue ribbons in the market lamb and commercial ewe divisions. Main took second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place finishes, and Kahler placed ninth. The Bison FFA Chapter also received a blue ribbon in sheep herdsmanship.
