Casey’s celebrates opening of new store

Support continues for Hunting with Heroes

Casey’s General Store held a grand opening last Friday and Saturday at its brand new store, located at 101 1st. Ave. NE in Buffalo Center. Staff celebrated by offering free samples and special deals to the droves of customers who stopped in to check out the new store, which features new and expanded food and drink offerings and a large lot with four gas pumps. Staff on hand for the grand opening and ribbon cutting on Friday included, front from left: Nakita Lind, Rachel Cantu, Jill Lampman, Manager Darcy Roeder, Kathy Huitt and Heather Thompson. Back row: Lisa Schroeder, Maria Mayland, District Manager Kevin Sinnwell, Pepperoni Pete, Denise Sahr and Area Supervisor Teresa Garrett

Hunting with Heroes will return to our area for the third year during Veteran’s Day weekend this November. Backers of the event include Pheasants Forever and the Florence Recreation Area Trap Range, which is managed by the Winnebago County Conservation Board. Event organizer Bernie Becker expects four to five veteran marines for this year’s event, and each will receive a brand new gun, along with hunting gear provided by Pheasants Forever. Becker says the marines who participate in the event have often never used a shotgun before, so Florence Trap Range instructors Bob Frerichs and Keith Frerichs have volunteered to show them the ropes at the range before the marines set out on their first pheasant hunt. From left are: Keith Frerichs, Bob Frerichs and Bernie Becker. The trap range is also donating clay pigeons and shells for the practice session. Following their time at the range, Dale Helgeland of Leland has invited the veterans to his home for lunch and an afternoon of pheasant hunting on his land. As part of the Hunting with Heroes weekend, all area veterans, spouses and surviving veterans’ spouses are invited to the all-expenses-paid banquet on Sunday, Nov. 10 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Lakota Eagle Center. Anyone wishing to attend should RSVP to Cathy Kelly at 515-538-0572 or Denny Murra at 319-269-4124 by November 1.

NIB names Thompson as executive director

Casey’s Store Manager Darcy Roeder, center right, and North Iowa Betterment Executive Director Alyssa Thompson, center left, do the honors at a ribbon cutting ceremony for Buffalo Center’s new Casey’s store last Friday, Sept. 27. The original Casey’s store in Buffalo Center opened in 1977, as a franchise under manager Verlin Lemaster. The Casey’s corporation took over the store in 2008. “It is just such a blessing to us all, said Area Supervisor Teresa Garrett of the new store. She says on the first day of business on Sept. 18, it seemed like everybody in town showed up at the store at least twice.

Community plays role in hazmat training Local fire and ambulance crews held a hazmat training exercise on Saturday, Sept. 21, which involved a simulated crash between a school bus and a tanker trailer carrying hazardous material. North Iowa students assisted with the training by playing the part of “victims on the bus, and organizers also asked some parents to get involved to make the situation more lifelike for the crews on the scene. Teresa Cooper was very convincing in her role as a frantic mother, as she rushed to her son, Brody’s side. See story on page 12.

A l y s s a Thompson of Buffalo Center is the new executive director at North Iowa Betterment. Thompson assumed the post MonAlyssa day, Sept. 16, Thompson and will be at the NIB office in Buffalo Center four days a week. Thompson already knows the job pretty well, as she interned at NIB this summer under former executive director Jamie Thomsen. Thompson is a 2009 graduate of North Iowa High School, and she plans to graduate this December from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a degree in Public Relations-Mass Media. Thompson says she wanted to get involved with NIB after seeing how the organization has helped the local communities with various projects and activities. “When I was growing up, we didn’t have anything for kids, said Thompson. “Why not be a part of something that’s trying to better the community we live in? One of Thompson’s goals is to help spread the word about NIB and the things it does, and she plans to go door-to-door in the local communities to introduce herself and the organization. Projects NIB is currently working on include Halloween parties for kids and adults, a tour of homes, youth basketball tournaments, Girls’

Substitute teachers: valuable members of the education profession By Linda Vann, Professional Development Trainer at AEA 267 On any given school day in the United States, substitute teachers staff approximately 274,000 classrooms. (Source: Substitute Teaching Institute at Utah State University). In fact, it is estimated that the typical student in the U.S. spends over 80 days of their K-12 school career with a substitute teacher. At a time when expectations for student achievement have never been higher, students cannot afford to lose a day of instruction when the regular classroom teacher is absent. Substitute teachers should be part of an overall effort in the school to provide seamless, quality instruction for students. Unfortunately, many schools struggle with this issue due to a substitute teacher shortage. This is true nationally, as well as in Iowa. Some states require only a high school diploma to become a substitute teacher, while others require a teaching degree. In Iowa, anyone

who meets the following criteria is eligible to receive substitute authorization: • Has one of the following: holds a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, or has completed an approved Paraeducator Certification Program and holds a Paraeducator Certificate, • Is a minimum of 21 years old, • Has successfully completed an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation background check and a National Criminal History background check, and • Has successfully completed all the requirements of an approved Substitute Authorization course. Earning substitute authorization credentials allows an individual to substitute only in a middle school, junior high, or high school for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment at a time. Certified paraeducators who also have substitute credentials can substitute teach only in the special education

Weight limit increases for harvest

As combines start hitting the field throughout the state, Governor Branstad signed into effect a proclamation granting a temporary weight limit exemption for trucks on Iowa roads. The proclamation specifically increases the weight allowable for corn shipment, soybeans, hay, straw and stover by 12.5% per axle (up to a maximum of 90,000 pounds) without the need for an oversize/overweight permit. The 2013 proclamation again applies to loads transported on all highways within Iowa, excluding the interstate system. Trucks cannot exceed the truck’s regular maximum by more than 12.5% per axle and must obey the posted limits on all roads and bridges. Farmers who are transporting grain are also required to follow their vehicle safety standards on axle weights. The exemption will be granted for 60 days beginning, September 27.

Nora Ephron novel is October 17 feature for Rake Book Club

Orphan Train Program features Ruth Hickok Many people in the Forest City and Buffalo Center areas knew Ruth Hickok. She and her husband, Orville, lived and raised their children here. But what many people don’t realize is that as a five-year-old in 1917, Ruth rode the Orphan Train from Brooklyn, NY to Forest City to line up in front of the Methodist Church and hope she would be adopted by a local family. Her name was Agnes Herlin then, and she spent her first night in the cellar of the home of an elderly couple because she cried so hard. Eventually, she was adopted by the Jenson family and had a wonderful home, but others were not so lucky. The Orphan Train concept grew out of desperation about what to do with as many as 10,000 abandoned children on New York streets. Slowly, a system was begun that loaded them up and sent them west, stop-

ping at various towns to let interested people choose a child. This was the beginnings of foster care in America. It is thought that as many as 100,000 orphans rode an Orphan Train from the East Coast to the Midwest from 1854 to 1929. The Buffalo Center Historical Society is hosting a program about the Orphan Train system on Sunday, October 6, from 2-4 p.m. at the Heritage Town Center. This will include a video with background information and remarks by people who knew Ruth, followed by autumn desserts and coffee. The Heritage Museum, with its exhibit called “Doctors, Dentists and Drug Stores, will be open around the program, from 1-2 p.m. and 4-5 p.m. The museum will also be open on Saturday, October 5 from 1-4 p.m. This weekend will be the last public showing of this exhibit before it is taken down.

Here are a few ladies helping make ice cream cinnamon rolls during baking class. From left: Alice Smith, Jo Meinders, Irma Lockrem and Geraldine Wessels Welcome fall! It was a beautiful weekend - I hope this weather lasts for awhile. To start our week off, we had a movie and popcorn on Saturday. The movie was Lost Episodes of The Three Stooges. We also watched Lawrence Welk. For our Sunday worship services, Pastor Brad DeVries from First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center came in. Thank you Pastor DeVries. Monday morning, we kicked our day off with a spelling bee. For my morning sensory teasers, we took a trip to The Ozarks and Branson. We saw the breathtaking scenery of the lakes in summer, fall and winter, then we went to Silver Dollar City and the Branson Civil War Museum. At 1:30 p.m., we played a couple games of Wheel of Fortune. After that, we played frisbee golf. Monica read some stories from Buffalo Chips during her sensory group. Tuesday, we exercised to A Celebration of County and Pop Music. For both sensory groups today, we gave hand and back massages while listening to Precious Memories by George Beverly Shea. During the afternoon, we had our baking class. The residents and I made ice cream cinnamon rolls. The game of the day was Guess 10. Wednesday, we listened to Sota Grass while we exercised. For our morning sensory group, we went on YouTube and did a sing-along. We had 21 residents for bingo, and

Thank you Sandy for stopping by. Monica played Ladder Ball and read the Buffalo Center Tribune to the residents for our evening programs. Thursday, we exercised to Frank Sinatra. Today, for Bible Study, we reviewed Jer. 32:1-3, 6-15, 1 Tim. 6:6-19 and Luke 16:19-31. Thank you Pastor Peake, for leading our class. For both sensory groups, we went outside to enjoy this beautiful fall weather we are having. We also had our weekly Spa Day and played dominoes. Friday, we listened to Some Good Old Rock n Roll during exercise class. The big winners for our Wii bowling league were Doug Hanson for the first game, with a score

of 154, and Mary Mathews bowled a six pack, our fist one since we’ve started, and scored a 189 to win the second game. For both sensory groups, today we gave hand and back massages. Since we had such a beautiful day again, Kim and I invited a group of ladies to have a picnic outside for dinner. Last, but not least, we ended our week with Happy Hour. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Willis Murra, who passed away this past week.

College Savings Iowa giving away $5,290 State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald recently announced that Iowa has joined forces with other states in declaring September as College Savings Month. College Savings Month is a time when families are encouraged to explore the benefits of saving through a 529 plan, such as College Savings Iowa. “As a way to raise awareness among families about saving for higher education, College Savings Iowa will be awarding a $5,290 College Savings Iowa account this fall, Fitzgerald said. “I encourage all Iowans with young children to register today for a chance to win and jump-start their children’s college savings. For more information

about the giveaway and to register, visit collegesavingsiowa.com. College Savings Iowa is an affordable, tax-advantaged option for families who are saving for their children’s higher education. It takes just $25 to open a College Savings Iowa account, and anyone – parents, grandparents, friends and relatives – can invest on behalf of a child. Participants who are Iowa taxpayers can deduct contributions up to $3,045 per beneficiary account from their adjusted gross income in 2013, and there are no income or residency restrictions. To learn more about College Savings Iowa, go to collegesavingsiowa.com or call 1-888-6729116.

Not too early for flu shots The 2012-2013 Iowa influenza season began earlier, peaked earlier, and was more severe than recent influenza seasons; particularly for people 65 years and older. While no one can predict what the upcoming flu season will be like, the Iowa Department of Public Health says the best defense against getting the flu is an annual vaccination. The best time to be vaccinated is now. While outbreaks can begin as early as October, most of the peak flu activity happens in January or later. “Since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to receive the full protection from the flu virus, being vaccinated now will mean you’ll be protected before the flu starts spreading in your community, said IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. Every Iowan over six months of age should receive the flu vaccine, and it’s especially important for the following groups of people, because they are at higher risk of developing serious complications, like pneumonia, should they get sick

with the flu: • Pregnant women • Children, especially those younger than two years of age • Older adults, especially those aged 65 years and over • People who have certain medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease This year, there are a variety of flu vaccine options available, including a trivalent vaccine, which protects against three different flu viruses; a quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four flu strains; and a vaccine for those who are allergic to eggs. In addition, the vaccine is available as a ‘regular’ flu shot, nasal spray and intradermal shot, which uses a much smaller needle than the regular flu shot and is injected into the skin, instead of the muscle. For more information on the kinds of flu vaccine available this year, visit www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/ keyfacts.htm. www.qpsemployment.com Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Lady Bison notch win and loss in conference action

The North Iowa Lady Bison picked up their second conference win of the volleyball season last Tuesday, Sept. 24, as they downed the West Hancock Eagles 3-1 in Buffalo Center. Set scores were 259, 23-25, 26-24 and 25-6. Rachel Boekelman led the Lady Bison in kills for the night with 15, followed by Paige Hassebroek with 10 and Mica Johnson and Rebecca Murray with seven each. Johnson and Carly Main each had four aces. Main had 15 digs, followed by Boekelman with 11 and Hassebroek with 10. Johnson had two blocks, and Hassebroek and Murray each had one. North Iowa totaled 43 kills, 17 aces and 58 digs on the night. “This was another good win for us in the conference, said Lady Bison Head Coach Carissa Judge. “We came out really strong and played some of our best volleyball. The second game and third game, West Hancock played a lot better; making the games closer and winning one of them. But in the end of the night, our tough serving, great digging, and excellent hitting helped us come away with a win on the night. It was a fun

night of volleyball. The ladies traveled to Forest City on Thursday, Sept. 26, where they lost the first two sets before winning the third and coming close in the fourth in a 3-1 loss. Set scores were 16-25, 15-25, 25-21 and 22-25. Kill leaders were Boekelman with eight, Hassebroek seven and Johnson six, and each of them also served three aces. Boekelman, Hassebroek and Murray each had three blocks, and Main had 17 assists. “The girls played really well this night, said Coach Judge. “Forest City is currently third in our conference, so we knew it would be a tough game. However, I didn’t think that bothered the girls at all. We came out playing very well. The first two games, we got stuck on 15 and 16 points. One of their servers went on a run, and we had a hard time breaking it. “Being down two games can be defeating, but that didn’t stop our girls, said Judge. “We came out strong in the third game and built up a big lead; going ahead 17-11, then 20-13. They started to come back, but our girls kept fighting until we

The North Iowa Lady Bison cross country team won first place at the West Fork invitational last Monday, Sept. 23, with four ladies taking medalist honors. won, 25-21. The fourth game was a battle as well. We were down most of the game but ended up tying it up at 21. Unfortunately, the last few points didn’t go our way, and we lost 22-25. We blocked the ball well, did a great job digging and covering tips. I was proud of the way our girls played this night. North Iowa traveled to Algona on Saturday, Sept. 28, for a tournament at Bishop Garrigan. The Lady Bison won one of their six matches, with scores including: Bishop Garrigan: 15-21, 12-21 Clarion-Goldfield: 11-21, 18-21 Eagle Grove: 21-18, 22-20 Lake Mills: 10-21, 18-21 GHV: 15-21, 22-24 Manson NW Webster: 13-21, 1021 Boekelman had 26 kills on the day, followed by Hassebroek and Murray with 14 each. Main served 26/30 with five aces, and she also had 52 assists. Hassebroek had four blocks, followed by Murray with three. Boekelman led in digs with 27, followed by Ashley Huntington with 20, Main with 19 and Johnson with 16. “It was a rough day of volleyball for North Iowa, as we didn’t play our best volleyball overall, said Judge. “Coming off a busy week of playing four sets each against West Hancock and Forest City, our legs were tired, and it showed this weekend. We struggled with serve receive, communication, and missed more serves and had more hitting errors than we usually do. One thing we did well at was digging. There were some tough teams at this tournament that hit the ball hard, and I thought our girls did a great job digging them up. “It was a long day of playing a lot of volleyball. Let’s hope the girls get some rest, and we will come ready to play Tuesday night against Belmond-Klemme for our last conference game. It’s hard to believe that time has come already, said Judge.

Ladies triumph at West Fork The North Iowa Lady Bison claimed first place for the first time this season at the West Fork cross country invitational on Monday, Sept. 23. Ten schools fielded runners, and four North Iowa girls medaled to tally a 25 point total. Madi Blodgett led North Iowa with a number two finish, followed by Brooke Hovland in fourth, Krista Hovland in fifth, and Samantha Sevley in 14th place. Meanwhile, the boys’ team took fourth place with 63 points, as Connor Smith and Dan Miller medaled with fourth and ninth place finishes, respectively. “On an ideal night to run cross country, both teams came out and competed well in a solid field, said North Iowa Head Coach Jon Potter. “The girls’ team came out and ran exceptionally well. Madi and Brooke show up every meet and just turn in very strong performances –

week in and week out. This exceptional consistency has been a great boon for our team. “Krista Hovland ran one of the finest races of her career to earn an excellent fifth place finish in a quality field – this is the type of performance we will need from her to achieve our season’s goals, said Potter. “Samantha, with half a mile to go, was in 18th place and worked very hard to move up; her passing one girl with 100 meters to go was the difference for our team’s first place finish and us losing on the tiebreaker. “The boys’ squad overall turned in a quality performance – it’s just that the overall field was improved from previous years, said Potter. “Connor led the way, as he has all season, with a fourth place finish. Daniel struggled but ran well enough to earn a ninth place finish in a tough field. Kam ran the best race of his career by over a minute, which was encouraging for his first time out this

fall. “Both teams have really come along this year, added Potter. “The kids have been putting it on the line in practice, and the results are showing up on the course. If we can keep everyone healthy and keep training at the high level we have been, the conference and district meets should be very interesting. Varsity Girls Madison Blodgett [15:09 /2nd (medalist)], Brooke Hovland [15:33/4th (medalist)], Krista Hovland [16:20/5th (medalist)], Samantha Sevley [17:08/14th (medalist)], Christa Miller [17:56/22nd], Kayla Limberg [18:24/28th], Lexis Julsrud-Wertjes [19:15/42nd], Megan Davis [20:30/49th] Varsity Boys Connor Smith [16:52/4th (medalist)], Daniel Miller [18:09/9th (medalist)], Kameron Rohwedder [19:19/23rd], Chance Mayland [19:43/27th], Taylor Ostermann [21:05/51st], Josh Clarke [21:40/63rd]

Wolverines tear up the Bison The North Iowa Bison didn’t make a dent against West BendMallard last Friday night, Sept. 27. The Wolverines took complete control of the game, as they secured a 54-0 shutout over the Bison during district action in Buffalo Center. North Iowa tallied just 82 yards of offense with four first downs on the night, while the Wolverines picked up 355 yards with 13 first downs and seven touchdowns. Derek Yegge led the Bison offense with 47 rushing yards and 13 receiving yards. Hunter Gelhaus totaled 15 tackles on defense. The Bison stopped the Wolverines just short of the goal on their opening drive of the game. North Iowa couldn’t make any progress after they took over and punted to WBM, whose Davey Jergens ran in a sixyard touchdown. The Wolverines put the ball in the Bison end zone four more times in the second quarter, including two runs by Jergens for 25 and 35 yards, a 14-yard pass from Nathan Grimm to Jesse Zinnel, and a two-yard run by Zinnel. WBM’s Tyler McKimmey ran five yards for a touchdown in the fourth, followed by a 13-yard TD run by Zinnel. The Wolverines scored on two-point conversions in six of their seven touchdowns. “A poor performance on our part; we didn’t block or tackle very well at all, remarked Bison Head Coach Don Anderson. “We didn’t do a very good job at fundamental things we worked on all week, and that spells disaster when playing a very good team like WBM. “We need to regroup and get back to doing things the way we are supposed to do the final four games of the regular season. We have a chance in all four games, but we must be more consistent on the offensive side and tackle much better on the defensive side. AREA NEWS Gazebo arrives at Lakota park

A North Iowa School Bus “crashed into a tanker trailer during a training exercise for local fire and ambulance crews on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Responders put training to the test

More than a dozen “accident victims had a pretty good time during a training session for local emergency responders on Saturday, Sept. 21 north of Buffalo Center. The training involved a simulated accident, with a school bus full of kids hitting a truck with a tanker trailer full of beryllium powder – which is toxic if inhaled. The ambulance and fire crews responding to the accident did not know beforehand what the training would involve, so they had to assess the scene and the victims just like they would in a real accident. About 16 North Iowa students volunteered to be “victims for the training, and each had injuries or symptoms for the emergency responders to attend to. LB Transport of Buffalo Center supplied the truck. Blue chalk was spread around at the scene to simulate the beryllium, and a placard on the truck told the responders what the material was. After looking up beryllium in the Emergency Operations Guidebook, the fire fighters knew to set up a perimeter 100 feet from the accident and to move everyone upwind. Each fire fighter also needed to use a breathing apparatus to approach the scene. The responders also set up a decontamination tent, where each victim needed to pass through to prevent the toxic powder from spreading further. Buffalo Center Fire Chief Brian Blodgett says a beryllium spill was a good test, because emergency personnel in Buffalo Center and Rake have hazmat training to deal with that type of situation. “It’s definitely dangerous, but it’s not unmanageable for our skill level, said Blodgett. “It’s not something a guy would normally encounter, but the way it was handled and treated was very realistic to a lot of scenarios. It was a really good experience. A lot of the training we did previously went into play. “The kids were awesome to work with, added Blodgett. “They do a good job acting. The training was set up by the Winnebago County EMS Association and Winnebago County Emergency Management. Tom Holland of the Buffalo Center and Rake Ambulance Crews helped to find volunteers and organize the event “I think it went real well, said Holland. “The Buffalo Center Fire Dept. had 10 guys, and Rake had nine guys. They did an excellent job. Holland says there were also 5-6 EMTs on hand, with two ambulance rigs. There was also an evaluator on hand from another county, and Holland says he had good things to say about everybody.

The new gazebo arrived and was installed at the Lakota City Park last Thursday, Sept. 26. The cement foundation for the building was installed last fall, and the dedication of the gazebo was held this June during the Picnic in the Park event. The gazebo was donated by the Molly Gerzema family, in memory of the C.J. Gerzema family and the Bill Kienitz family. “We want to thank the Gerzema family for their generosity, and we appreciate them for helping make the Lakota City Park more beautiful, said Lakota Council Member Gwen Good. The Lakota Park Committee, along with Charlene Spear, left, and Molly Gerzema, right, furnished the landscaping for the City Park for three other projects which were also dedicated this summer. These include the Veterans Memorial, the historic fire bell an

Holland says he hasn’t seen much in the way of contaminants at actual accident scenes, but with LB Transport and the ethanol plant nearby, it’s good to be prepared. The training also included an auto-launch by Mercy Air Med, and an emergency crew from Mercy Hospital arrived via helicopter to assist at the scene. Participating in the training were the Buffalo Center Fire Dept., Buffalo Center Ambulance, Rake Fire Dept., Rake Ambulance, Thompson Ambulance, Buffalo Center Police Dept., Winnebago County Sheriff, Winnebago County Emergency Management, Forest City Paramedics and Mercy Air Med.
