son. “It takes a collective effort to make it happen. He notes that AFM supplies about 900 grocery stores, and only two stores in each of six size categories received the award. The category Johnson’s competed in was the largest, making the honor particularly significant. “There are lots of stores out there that will never get one. Johnson says there has been a lot of progress at the store in the last year or so, including a new floor, deli case, dairy case and freezers. Farmers hitting the fields

Harvest is finally underway, following a growing season that was delayed this spring due to exceptionally wet weather. Several farmers were out in the fields last week, including Tracy Adams, who was harvesting corn northwest of Buffalo Center on Wednesday before rain moved in on Thursday and lasted into the weekend. Harvest will be in full swing for many farmers this week, with the forecast calling for clear skies and highs rising back into the 70s.

All units from the Buffalo Center Fire Department responded when a garage was engulfed in flames last Thursday, Oct. 3. at 3696 440th St., northeast of Buffalo Center. The call came in shortly after 10:30 a.m., and the department called on the Rake and Thompson Fire Departments for assistance while en route to the scene. Buffalo Center Fire Chief Brian Blodgett says there was no saving

the garage, so the firemen focused on preventing the fire from spreading to any other structures on the property; including the nearby home. “That worked, and we were able to protect everything else, said Blodgett. No one was injured in the fire. With the additional manpower and tanker trucks from Rake and Thompson, the fire fighters were able to set up two collapsible water tanks and attack the fire from two

sides. “We very much appreciate the help from the neighboring departments, said Blodgett. “We work well together. Fire fighters worked at the scene for about three hours. Blodgett says the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Also assisting at the scene were the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Dept. and the Buffalo Center Ambulance.

Bethlehem installs new pastor Bethlehem Lutheran Church has called a new pastor to the pulpit after a year-long search. Pastor Mark Brickzin led his first service at Bethlehem on Sunday, August 25. Pastor Mark has been in the ministry for 36 years, serving churches in North Dakota and Minnesota. He most recently served as interim pastor at St. John Lutheran Church of Hatton, ND. “My strength is the pulpit. I love to preach, he says. “I believe in a strong worship service. You feed people, and they’ll come back. Pastor Mark started his preaching career as a Methodist minister; beginning in lay ministry before receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He says there are many similarities between the Methodist and Lutheran churches. One of the reasons he decided to make the change is that he wasn’t comfortable with the placement system for pastors within the Methodist church. Methodist pastors are placed at a church by a bishop, while Lutheran pastors are called to serve by a congregation and can choose where they would like to go. “I had worked in tandem with Lutheran churches over the years, and my wife was raised Lutheran, and so we just felt like that was probably a better fit, said Pastor Mark. He joined Lutheran Brethren before becoming a part of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). He received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Minnesota Graduate School of Theology in 2006. He and his wife, Sherry, met at Moorhead State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. He has also served as a substitute school teacher during his years as a minister. Pastor Mark helped his last church transition from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)

to the LCMC, and Bethlehem is making the same transition. He says one key difference between the two organizations is that in the LCMC, the focus is on the local church, without bishops or bureaucracy. He says the LCMC has grown rapidly since he joined in 2005, when there were about 125 LCMC congregations. Today, there are more than 800. Pastor Mark is originally from Wahpeton, ND, and Sherry is originally from Pelican Rapids, MN, where they founded Christ Community Church in 2003. “It was very interesting, said Pastor Mark of the experience. “When you’re starting a church, it’s great, because you don’t have a building, and you don’t have traditions, and you don’t have a lot of things, and you find out you don’t need much to have church. We set up a card table for an altar and pulled out tablecloths that matched the colors of the church year, and somebody donated a cross, and we had a Bible in the center. We met in a senior citizen’s center, so we’d put everything away each week and set it up on Saturdays. Sherry has served over the years as a choir director, piano teacher, Bible teacher and as a prayer counselor. She has degrees in piano performance and choral conducting, and she also sat in on all of her husband’s classes at seminary. “She’s a good Bible teacher, and she’s a very good preacher when she gets in the pulpit, too, said Pastor Mark. “We’ve been kind of in team ministry most of our marriage. Sherry will be involved at the church by leading the Bible studies for the women’s circles, teaching an adult Bible class on Sundays, serving on the organist rotation and helping with the children’s Christmas program. The Brickzin’s have two children: a daughter, Laura, who is 30, and a son, John, who is 27. Moving can be a bit of a challenge for the Brickzins, as Pastor

Pastor Mark and Sherry Brickzin Mark has a collection of more than 9,000 books. He says the church was kind enough to acquire the former Leibrand TV & Appliance store on Main Street as a place for him to store his collection. The books fit in 165 boxes for the move; weighing in at about 12,000 pounds. “Books are my tools. I just happen to have a lot of them, laughed Pastor Mark. He buys books on a regular basis, but he’s also received books from retired pastors and others. His books mostly pertain to ministry, but he has lots of different categories. He estimates he’s read 75-80% of them. This is the Brickzins’ first time living in Iowa, and Pastor Mark says they’re thrilled to be Iowans. “We’ve had a lot of friends over the years who came up from Iowa, and they spoke very highly of Iowa, he said. “We feel very much at home here. The Brickzins have served in both big cities and small towns, and they specifically wanted to live in a rural setting. “We really liked our years in the small town ministries and just decided that’s where we wanted to be. There’s just a level of intimacy in a smaller, close-knit congregation. People care about people in small towns.

More than 7,500 adult volunteers contribute their time, energy and expertise to engage youth in hands-on learning experiences in healthy living; science, technology, engineering and math; citizenship and leadership; and communication and the arts. ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development partners with nearly 3,000 organizations, associations, businesses and school districts to strengthen local 4-H programs, including long-term learning experiences with youth through 4-H clubs and shorter-term learning through camps, special events and in-school and out-of-school programs. Nearly 1,000 4-H afterschool programs serve approximately 17,000 children and youth in grades K-12. “4-H will continue to focus on positive youth development combined with a strong educational foundation for Iowa’s youth,â€? said Keli Tallman, 4-H youth development specialist. “We fully support long-term learning experiences for youth through 4-H clubs. However, we offer a range of short-term to longterm experiences for youth, including clubs as well as afterschool programs, camps, events, and in-school programs. We offer our programs in multiple ways in order to reach more youth,â€? Tallman explained. Research has proven that participation in 4-H has a significant positive impact on young people. Recent findings from the Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that, when compared to their peers, young people in 4-H are: • Nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities, • Two times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors and • Two times more likely to engage in STEM programs during out-ofschool time. For more information about 4-H, contact the Winnebago County Extension Office in Thompson at 641584-2261 or the Kossuth County Extension Office in Algona at 515295-2469.

Another successful event for Lakota Quasqui

A number of ladies released their inner creativity last Wednesday, Oct. 2, with the help of Creative Spirits Okoboji and the Lakota Quasquicentennial Committee. Thirty-two ladies attended the event and took home their own rendition of the “Homestead painting following step-by-step instructions provided by Sierra Origer of Creative Spirits Okoboji. The Buffalo Center Tribune’s very own Olivia Doden attended the event, saying, “I hadn’t painted since high school, and I loved it! Amy (Goldtrap) Wilson was also among the guests. “Mom had always wanted to paint one with my sisters and me, said Wilson, “so this worked perfectly to come home to. The event was organized by Kelsie Koppen, Lakota Quasquicentennial Committee member, as a fundraiser for the upcoming celebration. In addition to the painting class, a silent auction was held with a great variety of donations provided by area businesses. The auction raised $255, which will go toward Lakota’s 125th celebration in 2017.

BUSINESS/LOCAL NEWS

The new Titonka Savings Bank building in Titonka is complete, located at 173 Main St. N.

Grand opening Saturday at new Titonka bank Titonka Savings Bank and Boyken Insurance Agency will host a grand opening celebration at their newly built facility on Main Street Titonka on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to tour the new building, enjoy ice cream sundaes and register for drawings. The original structure was destroyed by a fire on April 15, 2012. The bank has been operating from a temporary facility north of the new building, and Boyken Insurance was housed in the basement of Titonka Consolidated School for the past seventeen months. Included in this week’s Tribune is a special tab describing the new structure and the events leading up to the grand opening. Of interest to Buffalo Center area residents will be the old cashier counter from the DeVries Sales Barn in Buffalo Center, which has found a new home in the bank. The teller cage, which originated in 1877 at Beaver Valley State Bank, Parkersburg, was purchased by

Titonka Savings Bank in 1918 and served as the main teller counter of the original Titonka Savings Bank until 1955, when the bank expanded to the adjacent building. At that time, TSB President William Boyken, grandfather of current CEO, Allan Boyken, gave the counter to the Buffalo Center sale barn for use as a cashier’s counter. Approximately ten years ago Allan was told that the counter was for sale on eBay, and he purchased it and the cages were put in storage. After the fire, Boyken contacted Jim Ambroson of Red Barn Cabinetry of Leland to see if the teller line could be refurbished and used at the bank, and Ambroson jumped at the chance. The old cabinets and wooden frame are built of mahogany and have been refinished to their original rich brown color, but when they were resurrected from the Boyken barn, they were black. Ninety percent of the wood on the cabinets and frame was salvageable, according to Ambroson. Only a

few small sections of the fancy trim on top needed to be fabricated. The marble fronts, polished to restore their original luster, are original as well, as are the iron bars, beveled glass and light fixtures. Despite the years of disuse, all the pieces fit – marble, glass and steel. The teller cages were installed in two sections in the new bank building. The larger section, just inside the TSB entryway, acts to divide a customer lounge from the receptionist’s desk. The room also features an electric fireplace and flat screen television. A second, smaller section of teller counters has been added to the Boyken Insurance Agency area. After being dismantled and moved fully five times, the old teller cages have found a permanent home in the new building. Stop at the bank on Saturday and inspect the old teller cage that spent many years in the dusty arena at the sales barn in its glory in the new building in Titonka.

Heyer attains Master Farm Certification designation Tom Heyer of Boyken Insurance Agency, Inc., has achieved the On Your Side Master Farm Certification designation from Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance Company, Des Moines. Master Farm Certification is the next step in Nationwide Agribusiness’ On Your Side Farm Certification program. Farmers and ranchers can depend on a Master Farm Certified agent to have an indepth understanding of their farming operations, provide detailed risk assessments, educate them about exposures, match coverages to meet their needs, and provide professional, knowledgeable service. “We’re excited Tom has become Master Certified, said Allan Boyken, President. “We have made a commitment to help protect farmers in our area with the highest levels of professionalism and service. Master certification tells our area farmers that we’ll keep investing in training to be sure we’re positioned to help protect them now and into the future. The Master Farm Certified designation is also intended to help farmers recognize agents who have made a continuing commitment to understanding the complex risks faced by the agriculture industry. Only agents who successfully complete the program will be awarded the designation, and agents must uphold education and service commitments to retain their Master Certification. “Nationwide Agribusiness developed this multi-level certification program to provide additional education and resources to insurance agents who have made a commitment to protecting farm operations, said Jerry Hillard, Farm Sales AVP, Nationwide Agribusiness. “We’re proud of the agents who complete the program and are excited about the level of service farmers can expect from partnering with Master Farm Certified agents.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SPORTS Ladies add two wins in busy week

Buffalo Center (Iowa) Tribune — Wednesday, October 9, 2013 — PAGE 13

The Lady Bison volleyball team tallied a 2-3 record for the first week of October, as they won games against two conference opponents. The ladies traveled to Belmond on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and while it took a full five sets, the Lady Bison came back from a 2-1 disadvantage to defeat the Broncos 3-2. Set scores were: 25-19, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21 and 15-8. Paige Hassebroek led North Iowa in kills with 13, followed by Mica Johnson with eight and Rachel Boekelman and Rebecca Murray with seven each. Johnson served five aces, while Carly Main served three. Madi Blodgett was the meet champion at the Garner Invitational on Monday, Sept. 30. Blodgett finished with a time of 15:57.

Shelby Berte had a 100% success rate with 15/15 serves against Northwood-Kensett last Thursday, Oct. 3 in Northwood.

Blodgett takes first championship at Garner North Iowa junior Madi Blodgett raced to her first ever meet championship as she led a squad of medalists at the Garner cross country invitational on Monday, Sept. 3. The Lady Bison placed third at the meet with 64 points five medalists, while the boys’ squad took fourth place with 114 points and three medalists. Medalists for the girls also included Brooke Hovland, Emily Ullmann, Krista Hovland and Christa Miller. Medalists for the boys were Connor Smith, Daniel Miller and Chance Mayland. Tiarra Jensvold medaled in the JV girls’ race. “On a blustery day to run distance, the kids came out and had a flurry of encouraging performances, remarked North Iowa Head Coach Jon Potter. “The girls’ team was led by Madi’s first place finish – this is the first cross country race she has ever won, and she earned it the last 300 meters, out-kicking a quality competitor in the process, said Potter. “Brooke had another positive outing with her strong fifth place finish. Emily Ullmann’s first race of the season was likely the best of her high school career, which is exciting to see. Krista and Christa both had solid outings for themselves, earning medalist honors in the process. As a team, this was an excellent outing for the girls. “On the boys’ side of things, Connor went out fast early and held on for a solid sixth place finish, said Potter. “Daniel worked his way up early in the race and competed well

down the stretch. Chance powered through the chute and earned the last medalist honor in the process. Overall, the boys’ team had many encouraging performances. “With the conference meet roughly two weeks and the district meet three weeks away, we’re getting into that critical point in the season where we need to have some solid outings so that our teams can ‘gel’ and acquire the confidence necessary to compete with and beat the ‘big boys and girls’, added Potter. “While this meet contained many positives, we need to get everyone healthy and continue to progress to obtain the post-regular season successes we desire. Varsity Girls Madison Blodgett [15:57 /1st (meet champion)], Brooke Hovland [16:38/5th (medalist)], Emily Ullmann [17:42/14th (medalist)], Krista Hovland [17:54/18th (medalist)], Christa Miller [18:26/26th (medalist)], Samantha Sevley [19:00/32nd] Varsity Boys Connor Smith [17:33/6th (medalist)], Daniel Miller [17:42/7th (medalist)], Chance Mayland [20:13/30th (medalist)], Kameron Rohwedder [20:18/32nd], Taylor Ostermann [20:58/39th], Josh Clarke [22:13/48th] Junior Varsity Girls Tiarra Jensvold [19:44/6th (medalist)], Megan Davis [20:33/14th], Lexis Julsrud-Wertjes [20:54/15th] Junior High Boys Jackson Berte [17:11/33rd]

Boekelman and Murray each totaled five blocks, and Boekelman had 17 digs. Main had 31 assists. North Iowa traveled next to Northwood on Thursday, Oct. 3, for a makeup game with the Vikings. Northwood-Kensett pulled ahead in all three sets for a 3-0 win over the Lady Bison. Set scores were: 21-25, 15-25 and 19-25. Hassebroek led North Iowa in kills with six, followed by Boekelman with four and Murray with three. Boekelman, Hassebroek and Johnson each had two blocks. Boekelman recorded 13 digs, followed by Sydney Main with nine.

Trojans surpass Bison in district matchup The North Iowa Bison fared better on the gridiron last Friday night, but they sank in the District rankings with a loss against Northeast Hamilton at Blairsburg. The Trojans totaled 497 yards of offense to the Bison’s 231, as they claimed the win, 46-12. North Iowa was first on the board in the first quarter, as the Bison scored on a 52-yard pass from Spencer Armstrong to Derek Yegge. The point after was no good. NEH then pushed deep into Bison territory and scored on a one-yard pass from Nick Jeffers to Logan Seiser. Tyler Smith ran in the twopoint conversion. The Trojans scored again in the first, with a 14-yard pass from Jeffers to Seiser. Smith’s PAT run was good once again. Smith carried the ball again for the Trojans to score a touchdown in the second quarter, followed by a successful PAT run by Seiser. The Bison made their way into scoring position, and Armstrong kept the ball on a one-yard touchdown run; capping the scoring for the first half with North Iowa down 24-12. The second half belonged to the Trojans, as NEH put the game out of reach of the Bison with three more touchdowns. Smith ran in a 17-yard touchdown, followed by a 3-yard touchdown run by Gabe Rapp in the third. Smith also ran for two extra points. Kyle Rapp scored another touchdown for the Trojans in the fourth. “We really struggled with their speed, and they did a better job of controlling the line of scrimmage, said Bison Head Coach Don Anderson of the Trojans. “NEH’s experience showed, as they had just about everyone back from last year. We

moved the ball well at times but weren’t as consistent as we would like to be. Dalton Cooper, left, and Bobby Roeder are among the North Iowa students who help to cut out and sort the various product labels, which the school can redeem for school supplies.

Last call for milk caps as two redemption programs end Two programs which help North Iowa and other schools purchase supplies are coming to an end. The Kemps “Nickels for Schools milk cap program has already ended, but North Iowa Community School is accepting Land O’Lakes milk caps for redemption until October 18. The school collects special labels from numerous products, which can

Partnership focuses on tobacco education and enforcement The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has taken a pledge to keep tobacco out of the hands of the county’s youth. It’s called the Iowa Pledge (IPledge), and it’s a partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) to educate local retailers and to enforce Iowa’s tobacco laws. The I-Pledge Program has helped increase statewide tobacco compliance to a rate of 93% since it began in 2000. By partnering with the ABD, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office will look to do its part in continuing the upward trend. Clerks who successfully complete an online training program and pass an exam will be I-Pledge Certified, and the retail establishment will receive an affirmative defense against a civil penalty if the certified clerk makes an illegal sale. To take the training or search I-Pledge certification records, go online to ipocp.iowaabd.com:8080/portal. “The I-Pledge Retailer Training Program is a great way for clerks to prepare themselves to refuse illegal tobacco sales, said Sheriff David Peterson. “The training will help retailers maintain a compliant and responsible establishment. As part of the I-Pledge Program, Winnebago County Deputies will also be conducting compliance checks on local establishments. Underage customers, under the supervision of law enforcement officials, will enter establishments and attempt to buy tobacco products. Clerks who make the illegal sale will be cited on the spot. Criminal penalties for selling tobacco to a minor include a $100 fine for a first offense, a $250 fine for a second offense and a $500 fine for third and subsequent offenses. However, handing out citations is not the intent of the Iowa Pledge Program. “By partnering with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, we hope to educate clerks and maintain a compliant retail environment in our community, said Peterson. “Moreover, we pledge to help keep tobacco out of the hands of Iowa’s youth.

be redeemed for new educational materials and recess equipment. Other programs the school participates in will continue unchanged, including Labels for Education (Campbell’s soup), Box Tops 4 Education and Milk Moola (Kwik Star/Kwik Trip). These labels can be dropped off at the school or at: Johnson’s Food Center in Buffalo Center, Farmers Trust & Savings Bank in Lakota, Hometown Market in Thompson, or the Rake Public Library. Kids at the school sort through and cut out the labels, so people don’t need to sort labels before dropping them off. Labels for Education are found on Campbell’s soup, as well as a wide

range of other products from brands including BIC, Glad, Post, Prego, V8 and more. Look for a full list of eligible products at www.labelsforeducation.com. Box Tops 4 Education brands include General Mills, Hanes, Betty Crocker, Ziploc, Green Giant and many more. Look for a full list of eligible products at www.boxtops4education.com. The Milk Moola redemption program features Nature’s Touch products sold at Kwik Star and Kwik Trip convenience stores. Look for a full list of eligible products at www. milkmoola.com. The school also collects soda pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.

The Winnebago County Conservation Board is now accepting applications for permits to hunt on the Holland Prairie Conservation and Youth Hunting Area, located northeast of Leland. The area is unique, because it is set aside specifically for hunters aged 15 and under and their adult mentors. Hunting on the area is by permit only, to assure that each youngster has a quality hunting experience with an adult but without the pressure of having to compete with other hunters. Holland Youth Area permits are free of charge, and permit applications can be obtained at the WCCB office at Thorpe Park, at the County Recorder’s office in Forest City, or downloaded from the WCCB web site at www.winnebagoccb.com. The WCCB will also mail a permit application to anyone requesting one. Through the application, applicants request a hunting date and time (a.m. or p.m.) and which section of the Holland Area they wish to hunt. Only two hunting parties will be allowed to hunt the area at a time. One youth and one adult constitute a “party. Hunters are required to display the approved permit on their dashboard while at the area. Thanks to the generosity of sisters Martha Olson and Diane Rickerl (Acorn Associates, LLC) and brother Daniel Holland, the property, which has been in their family for over a hundred years, has been leased to the Winnebago County Conservation Board to be used to benefit youth. The area is 225 acres of restored prairie uplands, Winnebago River bottom, oak savannah and several wetlands. Hunters can expect to encounter deer, pheasant, wild turkey, waterfowl and other small game. No trapping is allowed on the area. For more information on the Holland Prairie Conservation and Youth Hunting Area, including a map, people can visit the WCCB web site. People can also contact the WCCB at 641-565-3390.

Jury finds Thompson man guilty of sexual abuse A Butler County jury convicted an 80-year-old Thompson man on two counts of second-degree sexual abuse at the conclusion of a week-long trial list Friday, Oct. 4. Clarence Miller faces up to 50 years in prison after being convicted of both charges he faced, and sentencing is scheduled for November 26 at the Winnebago County District Court. The trial was moved out of Winnebago County at the request of the defense. Miller was charged with sexually abusing a young girl from Thompson and another girl from Buffalo Center between January of 2010 and August of 2012. Both girls are now eight years old. The Thompson girl testified during the trial, saying that Miller had touched her inappropriately both at his home and in his van. The mother of the Buffalo Center girl testified that Miller made an offer to buy her daughter for

Clarence Miller $50,000. Witnesses for the defense included Miller himself, who took the stand to deny the allegations. He said he’s been honored to have many local children think of him as their own grandfather. This was the first of three trials for Miller, who faces four additional counts of sexual abuse involving separate victims. The next trial will begin October 14 in Bremer County, and the final trial takes place back in Butler County beginning October 28.
