Screaming Eagle is now Orange’s
A Buffalo Center bar has a new owner and a new name, but bar patrons should feel right at home. Troy Julius has purchased Screaming Eagle from Shawn Thomsen – renaming the establishment Orange’s. Julius chose the name after his nickname, Orange. Julius says he had thought about buying the place before, back when Thomsen bought The Old Wagon Wheel in 2010. He says he had talked to Thomsen about buying the bar for a while, and he finally decided to make it happen. “It’s not going to change much, said Julius. “I liked the way Shawn had it. This is Julius’ first time owning a business. He also farms with his dad, Howard. Helping Julius at the bar will be manager Ryan Silber, who has worked at the Screaming Eagle for a few months and previously managed at Shooterz in Forest City and The Barn at Gruis Recreation
Area. “He’s got good ideas – he’s got experience, said Julius. Julius plans to reopen the bar this Wednesday, with hours of operation being 4 p.m. to close, Monday through Saturday, during the harvest season. Drink specials include Happy Hour from 4-7 p.m., $2 beers and mixed drinks (excludes top shelf) and $1 off the bar menu. They hope to start offering meals in December.

Scouting for food this weekend Cub Scout Pack #445 is scouting for food in the local communities this month, as part of the Boy Scouts of America’s fight against hunger. The Cub Scouts are collecting food for the North Iowa Food for Families Food Pantry in Buf-
falo Center, as well as the Family Alliance for Veterans of America (FAVA) in Forest City. “We’re trying to give back to the community for all the support they give us, said Illa Roth, who helps lead Pack #445. The scouts are asking residents
in Buffalo Center, Lakota, Rake and Thompson to donate non-perishable, unexpired food items to the cause, as well as household paper products. Residents are asked to place items in a bag outside their front doors this Saturday, Oct. 19. Bags should be
placed outside by 10 a.m., and the Cub Scouts will come around to pick up the items. The scouts also plan to have a box out at Johnson’s Food Center in Buffalo Center this week to accept item donations.

Way back when 10 Years Ago Tribune Files of Wednesday, October 16, 2003 Open House Bridal Shower for Michelle Konkol, bride-to-be of Dr. Steve Johnson, on Saturday, October 25, 2003. The soybeans were almost all harvested last week and farmers were taking out their corn by the truckloads as combines and transport equipment dotted the countryside. Matt Peake, who graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City on August 2, has recently signed a contract with KIMT-TV3 in Mason City. Matt will be the new Night News Director. His primary responsibility is to oversee both the 6:00 and 10:00

• Expanded Halloween activities include an entire evening of games and activities for children on top of costume judging, as well as a costume party for adults • Expanded Santa House and house decorating activities • NIB Website • Weekly Calendar of Events Email • Youth Basketball • Youth Football • Girls’ Club • Summer Youth Activities (soccer, golf clinic, basketball camp) • Tot Time • Book Club • Welcome Folders • Pool Committee • Backpack Buddies • Zumba • Painting Classes • Slow Pitch Softball • Movie in the Park • Crazy Days Craft Show • Winter Gala • Kids Dance • Music in the Park Whereas many of the activities require an activity fee, some, especially for children, are covered entirely by NIB. Organizations like NIB generally have a paid director’s position and a volunteer board to oversee all. The director’s responsibilities include: coordinate and organize activities, write grants for general funding as
well as funding of individual projects and activities, communicate and coordinate with the local papers and city councils, and organize the massive amount of volunteers it takes to make all these activities happen. I realize that times have changed, but I believe that these are things that we need in our communities in order to thrive. I know that 20 to 30 years ago, we didn’t do all these things, but in today’s society, we need things for family and youth to do. If we want new families to move to any of our communities, we need to be forward thinking. I know that years ago, volunteers also would have done everything, but everyone’s life has gotten too busy. We still need plenty of volunteers but are trying to lighten some of the load. I also believe that all four of our communities need to work together to help the other. So how is all this paid for? Memberships, like the old BCCC had, grants, and fundraisers to date. Cities typically offer financial support to organizations offering these services to their communities. Ideas and suggestions are welcome. Anyone is welcome to come to the NIB meetings. They are held at the HTC every fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Thank you all for your time.
Letters to the Editor What is NIB? The question has come up – what is NIB? It is my hope that this letter will help people understand NIB and all it has to offer our communities. North Iowa Betterment (NIB) is an independent organization that was formed in 2013 by combining the Buffalo Center Community Club (BCCC) and North Iowa Community Development (NICD) in an effort to bring the four north Iowa communities of Buffalo Center, Rake, Lakota, and Thompson together for mutual benefit. Combining the two
organizations brings many of the ongoing activities and projects that have occurred in our communities over the past several years under one roof in an effort to create efficiency and avoid overlap of services and, hopefully, eliminate confusion in the public’s eye as to which organization is sponsoring which activity. As always, volunteers have been the mainstay in getting these activities accomplished. NIB Projects to date: • Welcome signs in Buffalo Center and Thompson grant writing and updating • New emergency sirens in Buffalo Center grant writing and installation
• Lions Park new basketball hoops grant writing and updating • Youth activities grant writing. • To date over $35,000.00 has been awarded in grants. • Work with Winn-Worth Betco to attract enterprise to our communities Activities formerly sponsored by BCCC: • July 4th games, peddle pull, bingo, races and fireworks • Halloween costume judging • Santa House, Christmas in Buffalo Center and house decoration judging Added activities of NIB: • Expanded July 4th activities in Lion’s Park to include music, petting zoo, volleyball and softball tournaments, inflatables and a parade

They were aided by several members of the Bison Chapter, Future Famers of America, in a joint effort featuring garbage bags and willing hands. Miss Linda Hardy, advisor to the FHA, said the function stresses an interest in ecology and a clean environment. Trails West, a mobile home park, has come into existence and the need for housing prompted W.D. Ley, Dr. Jay Rush and C.J. Gerzema to investigate the feasibility of locating the mobile home parking area in this community. The park now has three occupied trailer homes and one ready for a new owner. 50 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, October 17, 1963 Billy Smith is serving Rural Route II while the regular carrier, Clarence Bond, is taking his vacation. TMNH %\ &DPPL $QGHUVRQ $FWLYLW\ 'LUHFWRU Rain, rain, wasn’t it nice to finally get some rain. Well it’s going to be a fun, busy week here at TMNH. To start our week off, we had Marlin Molkness come in on Saturday for entertainment. We sure are glad he is feeling better. Thank you, Marlin. Saturday evening, we watched Lawrence Welk. Sunday, we watched Peace and Power in the morning, and in the afternoon, Pastor Donna Stevens from First Presbyterian out of Lakota came and led our worship service and gave Communion. Thank you Donna for spending the afternoon here with us. Monday, we had our monthly Resident Council Meeting. For our a.m. and p.m. sensory groups, we read some stories from The Good Old Days. At 2:00 p.m., Betty Coxson came in and read some short stories. Monica played Plinko with residents during games. Tuesday, we exercised to the Andrew Sisters. At 9:30 a.m., George and Darlene came to entertain us. Thank you, George and Darlene. Today, we had our monthly salad luncheon with The First Congregational Church from Buffalo Center. They brought in all kinds of yummy salads and desserts. Thank you, First Congregational Church. During the afternoon and evening, we played Oh Shoot and Mind Stretchers. Wednesday, we exercised to The Best of the Big Bands. During my morning sensory group, we took a musical tour to the City of Mozart. Hooray, we had bingo this week! Unfortunately, in my absence last week, we were unable to have bingo! The residents keep telling me this is one of their favorite activities. I would have to agree; next to our entertainers that come in, bingo has one of the biggest turn outs every week. Today for the game, we played Hangman. Monica read The Buffalo Center Tribune and discussed current events
during our sensory group. Thursday, we listened to Tony Bennett during our Sit & Get Fit class. Pastor Peake came in for our Bible study class. Just a reminder, everyone is welcome to join us for Bible study on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. We reviewed Jer. 29:1 4-7, 2 Tim 2:8-15 and Luke 17:11-19. During our morning sensory group, we went outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. We had our spa day today, played volleyball, and during our evening sensory group, Monica gave hand massages. Friday, we exercised to Sota Grass. The winners this week for our Wii
bowling league are Mary Mathews with a score of 191, and Jo Meinders scored a 187 in the second game. During both sensory groups, we took a trip down memory lane to the old ice cream parlors and superstitions Black cat, salt shaker, mirrors; these were some of the ones residents are superstitious about. Like always, we ended our week with Happy Hour. We hope everyone had a wonderful week like we did here at TMNH. We would like to thank Dorothy Boehm, Jane Thorson, Laurie Joens, Jeannette Meyers, Betty Coxson, Sena McGregor, Pat Osterman and James Armstrong for all the fresh produce, goodies and bingo prizes.

Local crafters are looking for more people to join them in starting a Prayer Shawl Ministry in the community. Over the centuries, shawls have come to symbolize shelter, peace and spiritual sustenance. Since the inception of The Prayer Shawl Ministry in 1998, members of this ecumenical organization have lovingly donated their time and talents by creating hand-knitted and crocheted shawls for those in need. Knitters and crocheters of any skill level are welcome. Shawls can be made of any color, and prayers are said while making them. Yarn is available for anyone interested in making a shawl, or people can use their own yarn. For yarn, patterns and more information, contact Cindy Steffensen at 515-538-0034 or Teresa Buns at 641-590-5556.

Latest museum program draws large crowd
A crowd of almost 75 people enjoyed the program about the Orphan Trains put on by the Buffalo Center Historical Society on Sunday, Oct. 6. A film with historical information and interviews of actual Orphan Train children, now adults, was followed by Beth Feldick’s insights about Ruth Hickok, who arrived on the Orphan Train in 1917 to a home in Forest City and later raised her family in Buffalo Center. Autumn desserts were served as guests discussed the film and visited the Heritage Museum.

Remaining charges dismissed in sexual abuse case Two convictions are enough for the Winnebago County Attorney in the case of a Thompson man charged with six counts of sexual abuse. The Winnebago County Attorney’s Office has dismissed the four remaining charges against Clarence Miller of Thompson, after Miller was convicted on two counts of second-degree sexual abuse at a trial held Sept. 30 through Oct. 4 in Butler County. Miller, 80, faces up to 50 years in prison on those convictions. He was scheduled to face the remaining charges in two separate trials this month. The remaining charges were dismissed without prejudice, meaning the state could choose to prosecute Miller on those charges in the future.

LEGALS Extension revises nutrient management recommendations Advances in soil-testing research have led Iowa State University Extension and Outreach agronomists to revise recommendations for phosphorus, potassium and lime. “Field research is conducted continuously to assure that nutrient management suggestions are up to date, said Antonio Mallarino, an extension agronomist and professor of agronomy. “This research has indicated some recommendations should not be changed, but other recommendations needed significant change to optimize nutrient management in order to improve the profitability and sustainability of crop production. He and John Sawyer, agronomy professor and extension agronomist, have updated the extension publication “A General Guide for Crop Nutrient and Limestone Recommendations in Iowa (PM 1688). It is available online for free at store.extension.iastate.edu/
ItemDetail.aspx?ProductID=5232 Mallarino said the most significant changes are: • Include interpretations for the new moist- and slurry-based test for potassium (K) • Changes to soil-test interpretations categories for K using dried soil samples • Adjustments to both crop nutrient concentrations and default crop yields needed to estimate nutrient removal for maintaining soil-test levels in the optimum category • Discontinued using the P and K subsoil categories for interpretations He indicated recent research showed the moist- and slurry-test for K is more reliable at assessing K fertilization needs of crops than the commonly used test based on dried soil samples, even with the improved interpretations for the dry test. The agronomists maintained many of the current recommendations farmers use to determine soil fertility, including: • The general concept of phospho-
rus (P) and K recommendations are for long-term profitability and reduced risk of yield loss, by emphasizing crop response-based applications for the very low and low soil test classes, and removalbased maintenance based on estimated crop removal with harvest for the optimum soil test class. • Interpretation categories for current tests, such as Bray-P1, the colorimetric version of the Mehlich-3 test, and the ICP (inductively-coupled plasma). • Amounts of P and K recommended for grain production in the very low and low soil test interpretation categories. • The soil pH considered sufficient for crops. • Interpretations for micronutrients, which currently include only recommendations for zinc (Zn) in corn or sorghum. Ongoing research studying several micronutrients for corn and soybean has not been completed.

Ladies go 2-2 at North Iowa Tournament The Lady Bison split four matches last Saturday, Oct. 12, as they hosted the annual North Iowa Tournament in Buffalo Center. The ladies faced Newman Catholic for their first match, winning 2-1 with scores of 21-11, 14-21 and 156. Next up was Estherville Lincoln Central, who they lost to 1-2, scoring 21-11, 15-21 and 13-15. West Bend bested North Iowa in round three, as the Lady Bison fell in two sets, 1421 and 15-21. The North Iowa girls came back in the final round to defeat West Hancock 2-0, scoring 2220 and 21-11. “On the day as a whole, the girls played really well,” said Lady Bison Head Coach Carissa Judge. “We had more energy throughout the day than we have had in a while. They looked like they were having fun. It was fun to see them play as a team.” Judge says the girls played great games against Newman Catholic and Estherville Lincoln Central to open the tournament. “We were aggressive at the net, dug the ball well, and kept our serves in the court,” said Judge. “After our game off, we struggled to find that energy we had the first two games.

We struggled with serve receive, which led to not as aggressive attacking against West Bend. However, I was proud of the way we bounced back in the last game of the day against West Hancock. We were down by six points in the first set. In a game where you are only playing to 21, it’s tough to come back from that deficit. However, the girls battled hard to the end to pull off the win in two sets. It was good to be on our home court and fun to watch the girls play again after having a week off.” Kill leaders on the day included Paige Hassebroek with 19, Rachel Boekelman 18 and Rebecca Murray 14. Boekelman had 32 digs, followed by Hassebroek with 23, Mica Johnson 19 and Ashley Huntington 16. Carly Main had 29 assists, and Ivey Greensky had 14. Serving leaders were Murray with 25/28 serves and eight aces, Main 25/26 with five aces, Boekelman 27/28 with an ace, and Hassebroek 24/26 with two aces. Hassebroek had five blocks for the day, followed by Boekelman and Murray with two each.
Rebecca Murray served up eight aces for the Lady Bison during their home tournament last Saturday, Oct. 12 in Buffalo Center.

North Iowa places six medalists at Eagle Grove The North Iowa girls placed fourth and the boys took fifth at the Dick Bell Invitational in Eagle Grove on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Lady Bison tallied 96 points, while the boys had 125 points in the field of nine schools running in Class B. Madi Blodgett once again led the girls’ squad with a fourth place finish, followed by fellow medalists Brooke Hovland in seventh and Krista Hovland in 21st. Connor Smith led the boys with a third place finish, followed by Dan Miller in sixth and Kam Rohwedder in 24th. “The girls’ team got an excellent preview of what district competition will be like,” said North Iowa Head Coach Jon Potter. “They faced three ranked 1A schools and some other quality programs. While finishing fourth was further back than we had hoped, being within four points of third is a real positive. Essentially, what it boils down to is a couple of competitors having a good run on the right day. “Madi and Brooke came out ran well to finish in the top 10 in such a talented field of runners – both significantly faster and better placed than last season,” said Potter. “Krista has really improved from last season, and now she expects to be a medalist every time she races, which is great. Christa and Sam narrowly missed out on medalist honors, and we’ll need them to continue to perform well down the stretch. “On the boys’ side, we lost our number four runner at the two-mile mark due to injury, which hurt our

overall team score, but the top three runners had very good outings for themselves,” said Potter. “To have both Connor and Dan within one second of each other down the stretch was encouraging; hopefully it helps fuel each runner with the belief that advancing to the state meet is a realistic expectation. Kam broke 20 again, which is great – earning medalist honors in the process. He has improved greatly from last year. “With the conference and district meets fast approaching, the cross country team would like to encourage as many people as possible to come out and support us in our most important meets of the year,” added Potter. The North Iowa Conference meet will be held in Osage this Thursday, Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m. The state qualifier meet will be held back at Eagle Grove on October 24, with a start time of 4:30 p.m. Varsity Girls Madison Blodgett [16:53/4th (medalist)], Brooke Hovland [17:09/7th (medalist)], Krista Hovland [18:30/21st (medalist)], Christa Miller [19:12/31st], Samantha Sevley [19:17/33rd] Varsity Boys Connor Smith [17:35/3rd (medalist)], Daniel Miller [17:36/6th (medalist)], Kameron Rohwedder [19:37/24th (medalist)], Taylor Ostermann [22:06/44th], Josh Clarke [22:29/48th] Junior Varsity Girls Megan Davis [21:01/28th], Lexis Julsrud-Wertjes [22:22/47th], Rian Helland [22:57/55th]

Titans hold Bison scoreless The North Iowa Bison will need victories in their final two football games of the year to salvage a winning season, after losing to GTRA last Friday night in Buffalo Center, 19-0. The Bison are now 3-4 overall and are tied for sixth in the District with a 1-4 record. Both teams came close to scoring in the first quarter, as the Titans ran to the Bison end zone on the first play but were turned back on a holding penalty. Alex Paulson made an interception for the Bison, who drove to the Titans’ five-yard line before turning over on downs. The Titans put points on the board in the second quarter, with a pair of nine-yard touchdown runs by Marcus Girres and Kyle Dalen. GTRA had one good PAT kick by Ethan Pettersen. They continued to hold the Bison scoreless in the second half, as Dalen scored on a 17-yard interception return in the third quarter. “I thoughts our kids played very hard on the defensive side, but we
still need to improve on our tackling,” said Bison Head Coach Don Anderson. “We attempt to tackle way too high, and that leads to longer runs by the opponent. Offensively, we had our chances but just missed too many blocks; especially on blitzes in key situations. “Offensively, we are just having too many negative plays because of missed blocks – something we just need to keep working on to get better,” said Anderson. “Opponents’ speed and quickness is really giving us problems. Hopefully, our kids will bounce back. We played a lot of emotions, and [there’s] obviously a lot of disappointment not winning. We still have a chance for a winning season with two more victories.” North Iowa ...................... 0 GTRA .............................. 0

Winter heating assistance available As the home heating season approaches, the Iowa Utilities Board reminds eligible Iowa households that the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and associated Home Weatherization Program protect against energy utility service disconnection and can help reduce residential heating costs this winter. The latest energy and winter fuel outlook from the U.S. Energy Information Administration projects higher average household natural gas and electric heating costs. The LIHEAP program provides lowincome consumers with limited financial assistance to cover a portion of their winter heating expenditures. The related weatherization program offers long-term financial relief to households by improving energy efficiency, educating consumers about energy use, and providing methods to reduce consumption. Iowa law requires that both programs protect a qualified household from natural gas or electric service disconnection from November 1 through April 1 during the annual winter disconnection moratorium. However, the Board urges all LIHEAP or Weatherization certified customers to continue paying toward their utility bills through the winter to avoid debt accumulation and potential service disconnection in the spring. Customers not certified for LIHEAP or Weatherization may receive a 30-day stay from disconnection during the moratorium by notifying the utility that they will be applying for either of the energy assistance programs. However, those customers must apply or be subject to disconnection. Customers who do not qualify for Weatherization or LIHEAP may be disconnected for failure to pay utility bills during the winter moratorium timeframe. Heating assistance funds are limited, so LIHEAP applications will be accepted from households on a first come, first served basis at their local Community Action Agency (CAA) from November 1, 2013, through April 30, 2014. Households with disabled or elderly persons 60plus years of age were allowed to apply for pre-certification starting on October 1. Consumers without computer access may inquire with their local utility or the Iowa Utilities Board Customer Service Section toll-free at 1-877-565-4450 to locate the nearest CAA. For eligibility requirements, visit the Iowa Department of Human Rights, which administers both programs, or call 515-281-0859.
Free sleep clinic at HCHS The Respiratory Therapists at Hancock County Health System (HCHS) are hosting a free Sleep Clinic, Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Wellness Center of Hancock County Memorial Hospital. Therapists will be available to assess sleep issues and determine if a patient is a candidate for a Home Apnea Link screening. If it is determined this is the appropriate treatment, a patient can sign up to take the machine home for an evening at no cost. However, due to a limited number of Home Apnea Link devices, the patient may need to sign up to reserve the machine for another day that is convenient. For residents currently using a CPAP device, the respiratory therapists will be available to review any issues they may be experiencing as well. This clinic does not provide maintenance on a CPAP device. Space is limited for the free 10-minute sleep assessment; to reserve a screening time, pre-register by calling the Wellness Center at 641-843-5500.
