Glow Run sees great turnout last Saturday in Sheffield By Nick Pedley Over 240 illuminated runners and walkers hit the streets of Sheffield last Saturday night for the first-ever Glow-in-the-Dark 5K Run/ Walk. The event raised over $2,900 for the West Fork High School after-prom festivities next spring. The total greatly exceeded the initial expectations of event coordinators Mary Schulz and Amber Weydert, who originally said they would be content if the 5K raised between $1,000-$1,500. “It went great. We had a really, really great turnout, the weather was wonderful and everyone had a lot of fun, said Schulz. “It was really hard to even keep count of everyone there. Schulz said there were more than 240 participants, and many people registered with young children in strollers and other family members. The event wasn’t timed, and people had the option to
run or walk the route which wound its way around the outskirks of town. It kicked off at 9 p.m. and finished up just over an hour later. Participants were given a neon T-shirt and a glow-inthe-dark necklace, bracelet and glasses when they registered. Police officers and other volunteers guided the pack through the streets and set up posts at each turn, but that didn’t prevent one minor hiccup from occurring. A group of high school cross country runners got ahead of the crowd a strayed away from the route momentarily. “It was just a minor hitch, no big deal really, said Schulz. The race wasn’t timed, and there was a black light tent set up so people could take pictures with friends and family in all their glow-in-thedark garb. Both Schulz and Weydert were happy with the turnout, but they said the event would have been impossible without the backing

Alley usage comes into question at Sheffield council meeting By Nick Pedley A dispute between neighbors about an alley topped an otherwise routine meeting of the Sheffield City Council Monday night. JC McCaslin came before the council and asked permission to park his camper in a plotted alley between Gilman Street and Thompson Street. According to McCaslin, he parked there until recently after Police Chief Ed Hanig asked that he remove it and get permission from the council. “I don’t know if I need a parking permit or if I need to stay off it or what, but I’ve been parking stuff on it since I moved there, said McCaslin. The alley isn’t graveled, and a tree grows in the middle of its boundaries. McCaslin claimed it wasn’t a thru alley because the tree made it impossible to use if anyone were to actually drive on it. The council also seemed unsure about how to determine the alley’s true path because residential development has somewhat skewed its original design. “If it’s a thru alley, than there shouldn’t be a tree there, right? Councilman Nick Wilson asked. One of McCaslin’s neighbors, John Hartman, was in attendance and expressed concerns over the camper. He said the alley is plotted so emergency personnel and have better access to houses during the event of a fire. “I’ve lived there for over 30 years, and I’ve never had a problem with that tree as long as they could get a firetruck through there, he said. “Everybody’s been happy with that alley until now – because somebody wants to park their camper there. Hartman claimed McCaslin’s
Fire Prevention Week
camper blocked access, but the council debated whether or not a firetruck could even make it through the plotted alley. “I think there’s several alleyways here in town that you couldn’t get a firetruck through, said Mayor Jim Saylor. “As far as I can see, you couldn’t get a firetruck through there anyway. Councilman Sean Cameron agreed, and didn’t think giving McCaslin permission to park in the plotted alley was the group’s decision to make. He said a land survey would be needed to figure out the plotted path’s exact boundaries. He felt that would lead down a slippery slope for other alleys throughout Sheffield, in turn costing money for both the city and residents. “I think we let our police department figure it out or work it out as neighbors, Cameron said. “Otherwise, we’re going to be cutting down a tree and pouring gravel. Cameron’s fellow councilmen agreed, and the group chose not to act on the issue. They told McCaslin and Hartman to either work out or ask Hanig to decide whether the parked camper was in violation of any code. Other business The council adopted a resolution that established a multi-hazard mitigation plan and approved the 20122013 urban renewal report. Additionally, they approved a transfer of funds out of the General Fund to the Debt Service Fund to bring the Debt Service Fund to a zero balance, per an auditor’s request. The group also set this year’s trickor-treat date and time for Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5:30-8 p.m.
The near-$3,000 sum raised at the run/walk pushed the parent-led committee’s total to around $7,000 on the year. Schulz and Weydert said the annual after-prom festivities usually cost between $8,000$9,000 to bring in entertainment and pay for prizes, and they didn’t think they’d need to host another fundraiser. Prior to the 5K, the afterprom committee hosted a pork burger tailgate and sold West Fork merchandise to raise funds. Schulz said the group plans to ask local businesses to donate the remainder of the amount needed to pay for the after-prom party, which other committees have done in the past. “This was a good little fundraiser, so we won’t have to do another one, hopefully, said Schulz. “We’re so lucky in the West Fork community because the businesses and everyone are always so good about supporting things and helping out.

It is an opportunity to gain valuable feedback about the development of individual students. Most importantly, it sends a powerful message about how much parents and educators care about the education of each student. S-C/M-T opened tournament action beating Alden 15-10 and 15-6, then split with Woden-Crystal Lake 8-15 and 15-5 and dropped two close games to eventual tourney champ Ventura 14-16 and 13-15. Because of a tie for second the Spartanettes and Alden had to play a 1-game rally scoring contest to 11 points to see who would advance to the semi-finals. Alden got revenge from their earlier losses to S-C/M-T winning the playoff 11 to 4. Individually Angie Peter recorded 39 assists and made all 40 serving attempts with 9 aces. A playoff putdown The Sheffield Press
I thought I wouldn’t care, and I said I wouldn’t watch. However, I’ve found myself drawn to this year’s baseball playoffs despite concerted efforts to steer clear. I didn’t plan on boycotting the post-season, but a pair of cruddy match-ups in the American League and National League Championship Series turned me off when they were finalized after last week’s divisional series ended. It seems my apathy was fueled by a lack of diversity among the remaining four teams. There isn’t an obvious underdog on either side, and it makes picking a team to root for rather difficult. This year’s post-season seemed destined for some rather dramatic outcomes. The Pittsburgh Pirates made the playoffs for the first time in 20 years, the Tampa Bay Rays grabbed a wild card spot despite having one of baseball’s smallest payrolls, and the Oakland A’s won their division with a relatively young and unknown roster. I thought for sure this was going to be the year for some of MLB’s smaller market teams.
Fast forward to this week and it’s quite obvious that scenario didn’t work out in my favor. The A’s, Pirates and Rays all got beat in fivegame series, and their defeats left me with a rather undesirable final four teams. The St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angles Dodgers were left to duke it out for the National League pennant, while the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers filled out the American League ticket. Neither of these match-ups particularly caught my eye, but I found myself drawn to the games this past weekend nonetheless. Be it extra-inning fireworks or late-game heroics, these two league championship series have already delivered their fair share of drama. However, I’m still not sure whom I’m rooting for. There really isn’t an underdog on either side – three out of the four teams rank in the Top 10 of Major League Baseball’s highest payrolls, and the other one sits at No. 11. Additionally, these teams have enjoyed great success this year and in seasons past, which also makes picking one rather hard. I’m a sucker for a good “worst to

first story. Though I may be finding it hard to choose a favorite, I’m quite used to pulling for random teams this time of the year. My two favorite clubs – the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners – are usually out of the playoff picture by mid-June. It definitely stinks, but I suppose there are always some positives to take away from this perpetual mediocre reality. For starters, I don’t have to stay up glued to games that run late into the night. I’m perfectly fine with tuning out around the fifth inning if my eyelids start feeling a little heavy. Not having any stake in who wins has given me quite a bit of leeway during the post-season
Improvements to State Government Iowa is considered the fifth best run state in the country, according to 24/7 Wall Street <http://247wallst. com/special-report/2012/11/27/ the-best-and-worst-run-states-inamerica-a-survey-of-all-50/2/>. Our strong agricultural economy, excellent credit rating and wellmanaged budget give Iowa its good financial health, standard of living and government services. This year, legislators continued our push for a leaner, more transparent government that is responsive to Iowans’ needs by: 1. Balancing the state budget without raising taxes. Iowa has a budget surplus of about $721 million. We also have $649 million in our reserve funds. That is the largest amount in state history and the eighth best in the country, according to a national report by the Tax Foundation. 2. Cutting taxes to create jobs and spur economic growth. The tax reforms we approved this year include reducing commercial property taxes for all Iowa businesses,

it even feels like, and it seems like decades since the Cubs and Mariners actually played games that mattered after the All-Star break. I guess I’ll have to stick with the “maybe next year mantra and hope it pans out one of these seasons. As it stands, I think I’m pulling for a Dodgers/Tigers World Se-
ries. I was watching a game with my dad this past weekend, and he said he hoped Detroit would keep winning. I asked why, and he responded, “Just for the city. With everything going on there, I just hope they can pull it out. I suppose that’s as good of reason as any. Go Tigers, I guess.
-XVW 7DONLQ¡ It was almost a good week . . . until this morning (Tuesday a.m.) I turned on the computer and part of it must have passed on during the night! After calling friend technician (twice), the phone company (twice), they determined that something (they gave it a name . . . but if it ain’t a “thingâ€? or “watchamacallitâ€? I don’t know the real name!) is shot! Anyway . . . it was something that had to be replaced. Shortly after noon and we’re up and running once more. Now all I need is to play catch up. All I can say at this point is Thank You for all the help . . . and I hope my blood pressure returns to normal! Home . . . once again I didn’t make it south over the week end. Little Lid won’t know me if I miss another week! But that’s not going to happen. Once again I did get a lot of things done around the house. I purchased new drapes for the living room and dining room a few weeks ago. Plans to put them up just aren’t going to materialize until after the first of the year. I have patience . . . as long as things are done right now! So . . . I decided to get the job done myself. I spent over an hour just getting the rods unpacked and laid out to make sure I had everything. It’s all there (unlike me!) Took one look at the old curtains and rods and decided that this is a bigger job than I thought. At the
least . . . I need some one to hold up one end while I work on the other. My arms ain’t that long! Having discovered that . . . the rods at this point are lying on the living room floor . . . and the curtains are on the bed in the spare bedroom! Plan B will be put in force when I figure out what plan B is! Last Wednesday my sister from Amana/Geneva, Ill., and my niece from Columbia, Mo., arrived here for a visit. It had been a year since I had seen my sis, and five years since I had seen my niece. Caught up on old times, supper, and more reminiscing. They stayed at my house that night. Some more visiting early Thursday a.m., and they headed back Amana. Other than that . . . it has been just normal activity around the house. Oh, I forgot the expensive part of the week end. Tried to put the top up on the convertible for the winter. It didn’t work. Called a friend to help me put it up by hand. To make a long story short . . . a new top motor and cylinders are on the way! And plans have been made to put them in later. But that requires me to call another friend to remove the back seat and all of the interior in the back seat area. Another job that I probably could do . . . and then still call him to do it right! I know my limitations! Be good, Kids+! It’s Showtime!

There were a number of golfers AWOL due to harvest time. They certainly don’t have their priorities in order I mean work instead of golf‌a cardinal sin. Oh I know no farming no money‌they are excused. The General one Severe Thomas type was AWOL in Washington on a visit so Private Cliffy one Cameron type was in charge of the troops. He did not give us any advice in advance like the General but then hey what does a Private know anyway? We had only fourteen troops answer roll call, all present and accounted for was the response. We were divided into four threesomes and one duo with an odd number in attendance. The men, some whirligig in nature were foaming at the mouth to get into combat. Doug Siems, Chuckels Nolte and David Levitt captured the top spot with a solid 70. Chuck said it is the best golf he has played this year, like ahhhhh what’s that mean? Doug was found crying after nine holes as he had a sore back and aching mind from carrying those two supposedly golfers as partners. Levittski right in there attempted to cheer him up with a; “Oh Dougie you suck it up, be a man and feel sorry for us.â€? Oh my I tell you what our troops don’t go through to attempt winning a couple of bucks. Second place dishonors went to Dicky Brown, Jimmy Saylor and Denny Foss with an even par round of 72. Now folks that isn’t bad for an old swab, an old gyrene and a stir way after all miracles can’t always happen. They won themselves a free week’s worth of golf at the Maui Hawaiian County Club but they have to row the boat over there. Third place and big buck winners were Billy Bob Billiam Nolte, Roger Dodger Cardinal Madsen and Neddy Boy, Nedislove, Nedrick Bohach with a 73. A fact to be

however the reforms help small businesses the most. We also voted to put some of our budget surplus back into the pockets of Iowa taxpayer and help low-income Iowans work their way out of poverty by boosting the state Earned Income Tax Credit. 3. Standing up for citizens’ right to know. Iowans now have a free, efficient method to ensure government officials comply with Iowa’s open meetings and records laws. The newly formed Iowa Public Information Board helps citizens with questions and concerns about their rights to information. In addition, we are developing an online database that will allow Iowans to search the state’s budget expenditures and tax revenue to see how their tax dollars are spent. 4. Improving customer service and saving money through efficiencies. New initiatives include an online <https://mymvd.iowadot. gov> driver’s license renewal system and giving Iowans the option to show proof of insurance on their electronic driving record rather than carrying the documentation.

this fall. I’ll watch if I want to, and if I have better things to do, I do them instead of plopping down and killing three hours in front of the TV. Additionally, there’s no need for me to get worked up during this year’s championship series. Certain games might get exciting, but in the end I sort of just shrug my shoulders. There’s no reason for me to rile myself up over something I really don’t care about, which has made for a much more mellow October than year’s past. I think I’m sort of grasping for a silver lining here. One of my teams hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2008, and the last time one landed a post-season victory was in 2003. It’s fair to say I’ve forgotten what

known, we really had a 68 but just did not want the rest of the troops to think we cheated. I know if we would have been honest David Levitt would still be crying as we would have beaten him out of $2. We did win a donkey ride across the USA bareback at that! Billiam dah putter man drilled one in that was the shot of the year. It was a 35 footer that barely got there, made a 360, sat on the edge and the wind blew it in. The wind was truly Billiam laying down on the green and blowing it into the hole. The fourth place team was the duo of Private Cliffy Cameron and General Bobert Shreckengost with a 76. They both are former Army guys, in fact Cliffy taught golf, now if that’s not a joke, and he shot 76 with help. The last place trio, and oh folks this pains me to divulge so I won’t. They shot 78, yes 78 rounds of ammo which is literally classified as ugly. They were in the fescue, in the creek, over the railroad tracks, under the pine trees and whatever else there is on the course. They were quoted as saying; “It is such a lovely day and winning certainly is at the bottom of our bucket list.â€? Now folks that makes me identify them because can you imagine DeanO Peter saying that? He had no help from Bobert Siems and Larry Lockinwood as their score indicated, so now you know the rest of the story. They did win the booby prize which was a left hand monkey wrench with one stipulation; they must hang from a tree by their tail like a monkey. Dick Brown won our closest to the pin on your drive for hole 3 and I won longest putt on hole 6, we each got $5,000 truth yup. Well maybe not! So before I malign anymore I must gather my shortcomings, look for my long comings and be like an ant being chased by a turtle. Did you know‌there is about 900 million dollars a year spent on golf balls, there are 336 dimples on a golf ball and Billiam Nolte said you should not be penalized for hitting a ball in the water, the manufacturer should be penalized for not making them float? DeanO said he has no trouble hitting woods, he just has trouble hitting out of them. Bazinga and enough is enough is enough. Finally Denny Foss told me that morbid is a higher offer! Okay I’m shutting the door!

West Fork has tough pool at Hampton Tourney HAMPTON – A tough pool to dive into. West Fork’s draw in the Hampton-Dumont volleyball tournament was difficult indeed as the Warhawks went 0-3 in Pool C held at the H-D Middle School on Saturday. But coach Abbie Gappa’s squad salvaged its consolation match with a 2-0 win over host HamptonDumont, which went 0-4 on the day. The Warhawks dropped 2-0 matches against Independence, Iowa Falls-Alden and Denver before their 21-14, 21-11 win over the Bulldogs. “We knew coming in there was going to be some tough teams and I think both Iowa Falls and Independence are top-ranked teams in 3A – in the top 10, I know, for sure,” Gappa said. “And, Denver is a really good-coached team. They are really solid – they came back and won against Iowa Falls, which only shows how good they can be, too, so all-in-all we played pretty decent. “We still haven’t hit our peak which I’m waiting for. Hopefully, someday soon we can manage that.” Despite getting early leads in each set of pool play, West Fork made some hitting errors or net serves that allowed its opponent back into and eventually take the lead. Lindsey Peterson, who earlier reached the 1,000-mark in both kills and digs after previously already getting to that point in set assists, finished the tournament with a total of 56 kills and 41 digs on the day. She said she didn’t know she was close to the milestones. “It was really exciting because I didn’t even know that until after the game – my dad told me,” Peterson said. “It was a really good accomplishment that I felt I had. I’d already passed 1,000 set assists, and I didn’t know that but it’s really great to have that accomplished and keep pushing to get as many as I can.” Gappa said getting to that point in a career is a huge accomplishment. “I thought that was pretty absolutely incredible,” Gappa said. “You know, you don’t hear that many people get a chance to do that. You hear of the 1,000 points in
basketball and stuff like that, but to have a 1,000 kills...I mean, there are half the games. There are more kills you can put down, but there are half the games in volleyball than there is basketball season. “There are not that many people who can say they can do it all and she really is a really great all-around athlete. She plays every position the best. I was very proud of her and I thought that she is very deserving.” And, playing in this tournament will only make the Warhawks stronger when it comes to regional tournaments next week. “I think having tough competition is good for us because we can know what our strong parts and our weak parts,” Peterson said. “It’s just, like, really good teams that we play we figure out what we need to do when we start tournaments next week, and to get as far as we can on (regional) play.” Independence, ranked ninth in Class 3A, defeated the Warhawks 21-15, 21-13 to open pool play. IF-A, eighth-ranked in 3A, took a 21-14, 21-14 victory in the second match and in the finale of pool play, unranked Denver (20-14) was a 21-16, 21-18 winner. “It’s Saturday,” Gappa said. “We struggle at Saturday tournaments. I don’t think we played too bad, but at least we came back and won one against Hampton. It was only my saving grace.”

After a summer of fun, meetings that is, it is back to business! The summer meetings of the Swaledale Federated Garden Club kept members on the road. In July Tracy Steil hosted fellow garden club members at her home with a tour of her vegetable, fruit and flower gardens. August took us to TownsEnd Winery and Vineyards in Hansell. It was a lovely day for a tour of the vineyards and grounds as well as some wine tasting. A variety of grapes were viewed and we received advice on growing and training grapevines and the method for testing the sweetness of the harvest. Brief business meetings concluded the July and
August outings. A jaunt to Reiman Gardens finished up the summer of road trips. It was a sunny day to enjoy the winding down of the growing season in Iowa. The butterflies were dazzling, delighted by the warm sunny afternoon. The day provided inspiration and ideas to plan for the next growing season in our own gardens! Now back to work! The annual flower show will be held October 26 at the Swaledale Town Hall. It will be a Small Standard Flower Show and will be open for public viewing in the afternoon. Youth are invited for pumpkin painting and a pumpkin growing contest.
