County continues insurance discussion By Ken Ross Graphic-Advocate Editor At a Nov. 5 Calhoun County Board of Supervisors meeting, there was discussion about the need for roads department employees to agree to modify their collective bargaining agreement to allow a deduction of $14.25 per person in each plan per month from payroll starting in December, which is a deduction for the January insurance payment. However during further discussion at the Nov. 12 meeting, county officials indicated that this was a fee imposed upon county employees by the federal Affordable Care Act and would not be a matter for employee negotiation. The $14.25 per person means a family of four would pay $57 per month beyond what is being paid now. This is a pretax deduction so some of the cost is offset by reduced taxation. This special deduction will continue for the six months until the July rate adjustment that effects insurance payments is reflected in the June paychecks. At that time the special fee will be rolled over to the insurance premiums with family coverage averaged out so that the premium is consistent regardless of the size of the family. This is consistent with past
practice in which family coverage is the same rate for all employees with that coverage. *** Gregg Heide, a farmer in the Pomeroy area who has done wind energy consulting, discussed the tax valuation for wind turbines in Pocahontas County and Calhoun County. There are eight wind turbine towers in Calhoun County and a much higher number in Pocahontas and Webster counties. “It seems that the assessor’s office and the county is in a funny place, when they go to set a value on this. The choice is pretty much either taking the utility at their word for what the project costs or you guys have got to go hire a consultant that knows the industry and most of those folks are working for the wind developers,” Heide said. “But I’ve got a little experience and I thought the numbers looked a little suspect.” Putting calculations on a chalkboard for the supervisors, Heide went through calculations that he says indicating that the cost might be substantially higher than the assessed value. Joan Wagner, Calhoun County Assessor, said that the Iowa Department of Revenue had advised her to follow what the company
supplies as far as net acquisition cost. Supervisor Scott Jacobs asked whether the other counties followed the same procedure in assessing wind turbines. Wagner assured him they were. “Then it’s kind of a double edged sword. We can’t seem to get any of them built here . So if we’re the ones who raise the question about jacking up their values, we probably never will,” Jacobs said. “You hope they’re not always the only ones who want to build,” Heide said. “That’s the other thing up for debate. There are guys like me who are thinking about putting one up. If you’re concerned about a big project, that tends to happen where there is transmission capability. Big projects get determined by other parameters now.” *** During canvassing of municipal elections, a city council tie in Jolley was decided by drawing as stipulated by state code. All five council seats were up for election and there was tie for fifth place (four votes each) between Phil Rastetter and Lori Schaffer. Rastetter was declared winner by drawing.
By Ken Ross Graphic-Advocate Editor Because of utility work being done at the park north of High Street in Rockwell City, the Avenue of Lights exhibit will be moved to the square, as a result of a request Theresa Hildreth of the Rockwell City Chamber of Commerce made to the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 12. The supervisors approved the request for using the courthouse square for the annual display sponsored by various merchants and organizations. Hildreth noted that there are some advantages to having the display on
the square and she indicated that the move might be continued in future years. The Chamber is interested in bringing more activities to the square and despite the fact that High Street is no longer the major highway that it previously was, there remains safety concerns with an activity that close to through-town traffic. Another change this year is moving the annual downtown celebration with trolley rides, merchant displays and a visit from Santa to Sunday, Dec. 15 rather than the weekend after Thanksgiving. Look for more information on the celebration in an upcoming edition of the Graphic-Advocate.

Rockwell City gets census mistake compensation By Ken Ross Graphic-Advocate Editor Michael Fitzgerald, Iowa Treasurer, joked that it didn’t take an act of Congress, not the U.S. Congress, but it did take an act of the Iowa Legislature to provide compensation to Rockwell City resulting from a counting error in the 2010 U.S. Census. Fitzgerald visited with Rockwell City officials and with Iowa State Senator Daryl Beall at the City Hall in Rockwell City recently for a ceremonial check presentation of $108,404, representing the amount of population-based road use tax funding the city was denied because of erroneously excluding the residents of the North Central Correctional Facility from the city’s
census count. Fitzgerald noted that Beall persevered in his legislative effort to get roads funding for Rockwell City and Beall added that Mayor Phil Heinlen and City Clerk Kelly Smidt kept reminding him about the issue. Beall also credited U.S. Senator Tom Harkin for his assistance and Iowa State Representative Tom Shaw for sponsoring the bill in the House. The official 2010 U.S. Census count for Rockwell City remains the erroneous one of 1,709, but for purposes of road use tax distribution, the number is 507 more until after the 2020 census. The back compensation for what Rockwell City has missed was specially allocated from the general fund rather than trying to retrieve money that had already been
distributed. In a statement issued about the corrective legislation, Fitzgerald wrote, “Iowa’s Treasurer, part of my job is seeing that Iowans receive the funds they are entitled to. In this case, it took years of work by Rockwell City and Senator Beall to get the job done.” Fitzgerald added that over the 10year period affected by the census, Rockwell City’s portion of road use tax funds would have been short by about a half million dollars without the correction. The city does not plan on any particularly big projects with the additional money, but rather ongoing regular street work.

Ross Rambles
Obama has a way forward
By Ken Ross, Graphic-Advocate Editor
Empty Nest By Curt Swarm Craig Johnstone, Vietnam Veteran This was the first time he had told his story. Unlike the present war, in response to an actual attack on American soil, Vietnam was a questionable war in a far away country. There were no troop send offs, no kissing the girl from the window of a train as it pulled out of the station. Instead, there were mass antiwar demonstrations. Soldiers in uniform were spit on in airports, had garbage thrown at them, and were called names, like “Baby Killers!” When the soldiers came home, if they came home, they took off their uniforms as fast as they could and tried to put it all behind them. Cold hard fact: more Vietnam Veterans died of suicide following the war, than were killed in action. For Craig Johnstone of Grinnell, he tried to drink it away. When that didn’t work, he was fortunate to find the love of his life, Janyce, get married, and get back into college at Iowa State University. He received a degree in Civil Engineering, and now at age 66, runs a successful surveying business in Newton, Johnstone and Associates. Graduating from Newton High School in 1965, Craig enrolled in the Electronics Technology curriculum at Iowa State University. During the summer after his first year in E. Tech., Craig took an Army induction physical and discovered that he was color blind, a condition that would not allow him to be an Electronic Te c h n i c i a n . Devastated, he dropped out of
school, and lost his draft deferment. Not to worry, he signed up for a 120day delayed, three-year enlistment in the Army, with the understanding that he would be guaranteed construction-drafting school. On induction day, he discovered that the only thing that was “guaranteed” was the three years. The Army’s only openings were in infantry, artillery, and medics. Craig chose medics. After a stint in Germany, Craig found himself with the 1st Cavalry in the Central Highlands of Vietnam during the 1969 Tet Offensive. The Vietcong would mine roads at night, and it was the cavalry’s job to sweep the roads in the morning. One French doctor became impatient and went around Craig’s unit. They picked up the pieces a mile down the road. It all came home to Craig when he had a buddy die in his arms, and could do nothing to stop his friend from dying. It was at that point that Craig understood that he was not in charge, there was a God, and it was He who was running things. Politics stood in the way of allowing the US to win the war in Vietnam. The Vietcong would retreat into Thailand and Cambodia, and US troops were not allowed to follow. “When you go to war,” Craig says. “Play to win, or don’t mess with it.” After the war, all of the medical training Craig received paid off when he saved the life of a woman in Iowa State’s Student Union Bookstore. She had stopped breathing and Craig
performed CPR. Like so many Vietnam Veterans, Craig has never participated in veteran organizations, or the Army’s reunions. He doesn’t even receive VA medical benefits. However, he did get his college education with the help of the Cold War GI Bill. He simply moved on. This is long over due: The Vietnam War veteran is as honorable as the World War II vet, the Korean War Vet, the Gulf War vet, the IraqIran war vet, and Afghanistan War Veteran. They all fought, they all served their country, and they all deserve our respect. Craig, we thank you for your service. Have a good story? Call or text Curt Swarm in Mt. Pleasant at 319217-0526, email him at curtswarm@ yahoo.com, or visit his website at www.empty-nest-words-photos-andframes.com
The only way President Obama can salvage the Affordable Care Act or something resembling his signature achievement might be to acknowledge defeat. The law is designed to expand comprehensive medical insurance coverage to those who do not have coverage through their employer, through Medicaid, through Medicare or through their own ability to purchase it. Since the law known as Obamacare was passed after the 2008 election without any Republican support, the law has been the focus of adversarial politics. Obama’s desire to reassure the public led him to make a promise that he might have convinced himself was true, or substantially true or kind of true. Regardless of his powers of self-deception, the promise was untrue and foolish. The fact that the promise was also absurd puts some of that irresponsibility back on others, particularly the media. Taken literally, Obama’s promise that if you like your present insurance policy you can keep it, is simply a less broad corollary of the assertion that if you like your life now, nothing about it will ever change. Of course people can’t perpetually keep their present health insurance policies. They never have been able too. The law magnified and accelerated the process of change and many insurance companies announced cancellations rather than send notices of rate changes and policy limitations. These facts generated justifiable outrage in people who had been deceived. An underreported fact is that many provisions in the law affect employers and employees involved in group health coverage. Also, regarding people on individual plans, the position some defenders of the law still take is untrue – the assertion that the cancelled plans are all junk
plans. Some individuals paying for their own policies may not have been aware of the limitations in the fine print of their policies and some people without group coverage may qualify for assistance that will enable them to get better coverage at a comparable or cheaper rate. However, there are many who knew exactly the level of coverage they had and won’t be able to have that coverage at that price. Many young healthy people have had limited coverage at a reasonable price that is sufficient in their opinions. To ask them to voluntarily make sacrifices for the common good after they had been promised they would not have to sacrifice will be a hard sell. The call for a delay in implementation of the law has been resisted by Obama with good reason. Since the 2010 election, the political atmosphere has made it impossible to change the law legislatively. It will take legislative changes to make the Affordable Care Act or something like it work. For Obama to move forward, he needs to publicly acknowledge that he cannot get that done. After that acknowledgement, the President should request that both houses of Congress debate and vote on a simple resolution of intent: 1. Every citizen, regardless of age, income or medical history, should have access to emergency medical services and ongoing critical care without imposing ruinous expense to any individual citizen or generating bad debt for hospitals and clinics. 2. Every citizen should have access to medication and procedures that can be expected to prevent or reduce long-term health problems or the need for emergency care. If such a resolution passed with bipartisan support, the next step

would be for Republicans to come up with amendments to the Affordable Care Act or a total replacement that would achieve the stated objectives. During debate, those who disagree with the stated objectives should be able to make their case and be heard respectfully, but efforts to bury the resolution in confusing amendments should be resisted as should efforts to avoid taking a position on the resolution.

SCC senior football cheer honors Bowl North Cheer Squad which was held in the UNI Dome in July. In October, Stephanie Hood was selected as one of thirty-six elite cheerleaders to the Iowa All-State Cheerleading Squad. During the IHSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament, she will perform during half time of three of the Friday games. On Friday Nov. 22, Danielle Macke and Stephanie Hood will be
participating with approximately 200 Iowa High School Cheerleaders on the 2013 Honor Squad. All four cheerleaders will have the opportunity to try-out for the 2014 Shrine Bowl in January.
Linking Food with Literacy Class Early reading and language development helps kids be “school ready” and greatly increases their chance for academic success. A great way to introduce literacy is to link reading to food! This class will share well-loved children’s books and food related activities to use with children, along with physical activities too. Learn new ways to connect with children as we explore literacy strategies to use with great
books including: Bread and Jam for Frances, Growing Vegetable Soup, Pancakes, and No More Germs Please, to name a few. This class will be held at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Calhoun County Office on Dec. 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The address is 521 4th Street in Rockwell City. This program is listed through the DHS online registry and will provide you with
2 hours of nutrition education credit for the food program. Be sure to call the Calhoun County Extension office at 712-297-8611 to reserve your seat; preregistration by Dec. 16 is required. A registration fee is required.

Pat Albright (on left), retired school psychologist and local photographer, whose work will be featured Nov.23-Dec 30 at the Lake City Library talks with Library Director Michele Deluhery.
LC Library Open House features local artist Contributed by Carol Dickkut, Friends of the Library member Lake City Public Library’s Friends of the Library (FOL) met recently to discuss a long-range plan to highlight talents of local artists through regularly scheduled exhibits. The group hopes to engage school-aged children and teens twice a year and adults twice a year. Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, the FOL will host an open house with a collection of Pat Albright’s photographs. Her art will be on display at the Lake City Public Library through Dec. 30. Pat Nutter Albright was born and raised in Lake City. She attended AIB after high school, but later sought her BA at Wayne State College in Nebraska. After that, Pat worked as a travel agent for twelve years. Still wanting to pursue
education, she attended Iowa State University to earn a Masters degree and Educational Specialist degree in school psychology. For the next twenty-two years, Prairie Lakes AEA employed Pat as a school psychologist. She retired in 2009. Pat has had an interest in photography that dates back to the 1970’s. Even though she had a good camera, she lacked a darkroom, and it was cost-prohibitive to have hundreds of shots developed to find the ONE she wanted. This frustrated her, stifling the development of her craft. However, in 2006, she purchased a digital camera, and her photography interest was re-ignited. No darkroom was needed and those numerous pictures were available instantly, ready to be edited digitally. When asked to describe her learning curve for photography, Pat comments that composition comes naturally to her, having “the eye” to find engaging material. Things are always catching her eye whether she is walking or traveling on the road. Her favorite subject is landscapes, with architecture coming in second. The editing of her work, however, does not come naturally. She has strived to learn the computer processes to reach her finished projects--cropping, lightening/darkening, color saturation, high dynamic range technique (under exposure, normal exposure, overexposure combined to make colors more vibrant). When immersed in a project, Pat says, “I spend 90 percent of my time thinking and planning, and 10 percent of the time actually doing.” She is persistent when it comes to getting the right conditions. It took four separate trips to Gowrie to capture the prized moment to snap the local depot, a scene she discovered serendipitously while driving in the area. People in the area know her work. She concentrates most of her shoots on local scenes; a well-known one is Rainbow Bridge outside of Lake City. She has produced a calendar the past five years, makes cards, and has photos finished by framing or stretching over canvass. In addition to displaying around twenty-five pieces in her home, Stewart Memorial Hospital is home
to some of her work, and at various times some are on display at the local hardware store. She has set up booths during the annual Western Days also. Wondering if her work had substance, in 2007 she submitted photos to a juried art show in Coon Rapids. She was in! Since then, her photos have been accepted into the Photography Salon of the Iowa State Fair each year from 2007-2012, receiving three honorable mentions over the years, one of which was awarded her very first year. The magazine Our Iowa has published several of Pat’s articles and photos. Her repute continues to grow. This past August and September, Pat had twenty-six pieces on exhibit in the Exhibit Hall of the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Her son Ryan is a physician in Grinnell. His office decor includes some of his mother’s work. A woman with an eye for quality work asked Ryan about the pieces. Pat was asked to submit her work for their Visiting Artist program, which features six artists each year. The jury honored Pat by inviting her to be one of those artists! When asked what her greatest moments are, she answered without hesitation, “Sharing what I do with others makes me happy. “ Pat takes pleasure in knowing her work connects with others on an emotional level, and she is honored when others wish to have her pieces in their own homes or offices. In the future, Pat sees herself continuing to learn more and more about her craft. She looks forward to discovering all the different things her camera can do. She advises those approaching or in retirement, “Find your passion and follow it.” That passion is evident in Pat’s voice, her face, her stories. Some of Pat’s favorites are Under the Pier (Hawaii), Old Man and a Buggy (her husband Bill and his team of horses going down the lane), and The Chores Go On (Bill walking through a blizzard). Join Pat and the Friends of the Library at the open house Saturday, November 23. Browse her work, visit with her, have a cup of coffee and a cookie, and decide which is YOUR personal favorite. You won’t be disappointed!

Spoken of as “champion corn raiser” by L. W. Evans in a letter written to the Graphic July 21, Bert Brittsan can still qualify for the title, according to information given out by him concerning the yield from the 14 acres near his home at the west end of main street. He cribbed 1000 bushels from the plot this fall after feeding 50 head of hogs, a few calves, a team and some cows, since the last of August. From the 5 acres south of his house alone he husked
470 bushels. The variety is of a wellknown hybrid, which Mr. Brittsan says is fine from every standpoint. Through the kindness of Alf F. Bothmann, local C. & N. W. depot agent, between 150 and 160 school children and a few adults were permitted Monday afternoon to investigate the workings of a locomotive containing an “invisible engineer.” Although these engines are used exclusively on the main line of the Chicago & North Western operating between Chicago and Omaha, it is doubtful whether many persons have seen or learned of the intricate electrical device which carries a signal of warning should the speed of the train be exceeded or should an object or obstruction appear in its path. An extensive improvement program for Lake City high school, Central school and Lincoln school has been assured by a recent approval of a new project by state WPA administrator George J. Keller. Work will include remodeling the buildings, replacing plaster, painting and cleaning walls and floors. Athletic fields will also be improved by the installation of track curbs, alteration of flood lights, and grading and surfacing of additional running tracks. The business and professional men of Lake City will sponsor a series of special trade days for the Christmas holidays, beginning next Saturday and continuing until December 24, when they will have something worthwhile for your consideration – the giving away of a new 1939 Master Chevrolet Town sedan. According to Wayne Marsh and Everett George of this city, the two men participated in an exciting episode over in the Lytton community one day last week when hauling poles for the REA work in that vicinity. They said they stopped at a farm house just as a truck bearing an Alabama license number was leaving the yard. The woman of the house excitedly asked them to follow the man in the truck. After some conversation, they discovered that the trucker had gone into the house where the woman was alone, and tried to force her to write a check on her husband and give it to
him. This she did not do according to the story. Meanwhile, the trucker is said to have taken a rug from the floor and a quantity of chickens from the yard and was making his escape when Marsh and George arrived on the scene. They followed the truck and at Lytton called the Sac county sheriff who is said to have taken the man into custody, lodging him in the county jail at Sac City to await consequences. The Hoke Construction Company, working on the REA project in Calhoun and Carroll counties, is now located in the building formerly used by Lake City Concrete Works south of the C. & N. W. track on Center Street. The company moved from Rockwell City in order to be in a more central position to carry on the work in the two counties. Among those who attended the football game at Ames Saturday were: Mr. and Mrs. P. I. Colvig, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Crawford, Dr. and Mrs. M. J. McVay, Supt. and Mrs. Wayne L. Pratt, Mr. and Mrs. Albert McCaulley, Mr. and Mrs. M. R. McCaulley, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. McConkey, Dr. and Mrs. L. A. Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lundberg, Glen Smith, Billy Clark, Loren Burley, Bob Adams, Bruce Fell, Frank Chapman, Dale Holm, LuVerne Brogan, Wm. Fell, Eddie Gregory, Howard Dougherty, A. H. Johnson, Bob Gordon, Joe Gordon, Jr., Wilbur Gregg, Kirk Button, Ed. Squires and Max Squires. Gabble Tattle Prattle – The sage of the town’s busy corner says he knows a lot of farmer boys who left the farms early in life to go to the big cities to make a lot of money so they could spend the rest of their days in the country.

ADAZA
Congratulations to Mark and Heather Addy of Boone on their new baby boy! Rogan Dean was born at the Boone County Hospital on November 8, weighing 6 pounds, 15 ¼ ounces, and 19 inches long. He has two sisters, Kalei and Jaelyn, and a brother Tegan. Grandmothers are Paula Redmon of Jefferson and Kathy Addy of Boone. Evelyn DeWald is his great-grandmother, and Isabelle Annear is the greatgreat-grandmother. They both live in Adaza. Isabelle Annear, Evelyn DeWald and Pam DeWald were visitors in Mark and Heather Addy’s home in Boone to celebrate Kalei’s 14th birthday on that date, Nov. 10. The Adaza Thursday Club met Nov. 7th at Marilyn Parker’s home. Roll call was answered by seven members. Thanksgiving cards were
signed to send to Mona King and Lena Lawson. Plans were made for a Christmas theme at our next meeting, and also for an entry at the Festival of Trees scheduled in Lohrville the first weekend of December. Marilyn served lunch as we continued our visit around her kitchen table. Josh and Molly Gingery of Slater came Saturday Nov. 9th to visit Bob and Karen Gingery and Liz and stayed overnight. Paul and Pat Schmitt met with family members in Boone recently to eat out and celebrate birthdays of Bill Schmitt of Alleman on Nov. 7, and Pat’s on the 10th. They also called on Pat Kevlin in Ames later in the afternoon. Anyone having an item for Adaza news may contact Pat Schmitt at 515-389-3737.
SHADY OAKS
Last Wednesday a group of Shady Oaks residents braved the cold windy weather to have lunch at the Lake City Drive In. While waiting for our burgers and fries, someone asked if any of us had tried the sweet potato fries. This began a lively discussion on the merits of regular and sweet potato fries. For those of you who like them, we learned that the Drive In makes their sweet potato fries fresh every day; no wonder they are
so delicious! While the rest of us munched on cheeseburgers and fries, one resident went straight for dessert, a chocolate malt. Another resident was kind enough to share her sweet potato fries with anyone who wanted to try one. When asked the best part of the meal, “getting out and about” was the unanimous answer! Thanks again to the ladies at the Lake City Drive In!!
The Sunnyview noon meal on Veteran’s Day was colorful. Each table had red placemats and blue napkins, with a United States flag as a centerpiece. Some residents wore clothing to designate their veteran status. We are blessed to have several veterans living here at Sunnyview. In spite of the sudden snow storm with slippery conditions that blew in that morning, many brave souls made it to the Veteran’s Day program at the SCC Middle School at Rockwell City - the school puts on a fine program. We salute all of our veterans! Along with our veterans, we also appreciate our Rockwell City Police Department and Calhoun County Law Enforcement. Thank you for your service! It must be fun to have six greatgrandchildren - just ask Carene Folden. She has a brand new great grandson, August Michael Folden, weighing in at 8 pounds and 13 ounces. He lives in Cedar Falls with his parents, Aric and Kristen Folden. He is their first baby. Congratulations all around! On November 8th, Peg Hildreth arrived at Sunnyview with a surprise. She brought not just one red rose in a vase with baby’s breath, but one for each dining room table. This gesture was in honor of her sister, Dee Harman, who was part of the Sunnyview staff for over 35 years. Dee died suddenly this past March and left a big hole in each of our hearts, and her birthday would have
been Nov. 8. Yes, we have many wonderful memories of Dee. Thank you, Peg, for bringing the roses. Several of the Sunnyview hallways are sporting a new color and a new look. We extend a big THANK YOU to our volunteer painters, who wish to remain anonymous. They have been at work in halls 6, 7 and 8. The wallpaper borders are now gone from the halls, as are the cream colored walls. So, if we took a walk along hall 6 leading to the Big Lounge, we would notice “pottery urn” colored walls (think medium brown). This color blends with the renovated Big Lounge, the great room with enormous windows that is popular for many types of events. (For a picture of the Big Lounge, see the Sunnyview website at http://www. sunnyviewil.com.) On our tour we would exit through hall 7, which is now painted “expressive plum,” a medium grayish purple. This leads to the TV lounge, which is painted “soulmate,” a shade slightly lighter than that of hall 7. If we turn left at the TV lounge, we will be in hall 8 which is now painted “studio taupe,” a medium taupe color. This completes our circuit of the newly painted areas. (Whoever comes up with the names for paint colors must have quite an imagination.) This saying appeared recently on the white board in the Sunnyview dining room. “It’s funny how life continues to teach us things even when we aren’t prepared to learn.”

My thought for the week is: Mix a little silliness into your serious plans. It is good to be silly at the right moment. That is by Horace the Philosopher. The Trivia Question is: When it was organized in 1846, the Appanoose County seat was called Chaldea: but when the city was incorporated, it’s name was changed to what? The J.J. Hands Library has started the “Audrey’s All Stars” which is a reading program for children Which started Monday November 11th and will meet every Monday and Thursday at 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help the kids read or do homework They will choose their own books There is still Story Time on Wednesdays 10-11. On Sat. November 16th there was a Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with lunch and more, at the Lohrville
Community building. Hope you all remembered to fall back. Jill Lumann Brozek of Zion Ill. visited Bette Knapp on Friday afternoon. Susan Clapper of Manson and Jordan Clapper and his fiancée Emma Davis of Des Moines were also visitors. The answer to the Trivia Question is: Centerville The Feather Party is Saturday the 23rd of November; the Helping Hand Club will be on hand to serve Maidrites, pie, bars and beverages at 6 p.m. Bingo later by the American Legion. Well have a good weekend everyone and Enjoy the weather chilly but not as bad as it will be. Anyone having an item for Lohrville news may contact Bette Knapp at 712-465-3295.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

And Skip Cleland playing his hand made guitar. It’s hard to believe that another week has gone by! We keep inching closer and closer to Christmas. We had our annual family soup supper this past week. We had a full house. The kitchen made chili and Wisconsin cheese soup. We also had families bring in desserts and we had a table full! Thank you to all of the families who came and made it a special night for our residents. Thanks to Merles family for bringing in the sandwiches as well. Thank you to Bill Haeder for saying the blessing. We were all still talking about it the next few days. Family time is the best time! We also had a fun surprise this week. Skip Cleland came and played his guitar for us. It was a homemade double steel guitar. We enjoyed listening to him sing and play. Skip was a special visitor for Tom but we all got to enjoy the beautiful music. Thank you Skip for joining us. We also had our card making class. This is our second time making cards and we are getting better and better at it. Our theme this time was fall. It is fun to see how with the same piece choices everyone had different looking cards. We also plan on making our own Christmas cards.
We are also working on a project for our troops. We often get free cards in the mail throughout the year and we now have a good use for them. We are going to mail our cards to Holiday Mail for Heroes. So when filling out your Christmas cards take a card and send it to: Holiday Mail for Heroes P.O. Box 5456 Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456. Pass this on and think of how many cards these wonderful people who have sacrificed so much would get. It is a great way to show our love and support. Note: deadline is December 6, 2013. This month we celebrate Kelly Kraft. Kelly is a nurse that has been with Sunny Knoll for 17 years. When Kelly was asked what she likes most about working at Sunny Knoll she said being with the residents and staff and all the fun we have. Kelly is married to Keith Kraft and together they have 2 boys. Kanne 23 and Kwinn 21 and little miss Khloe, their yorkie. In Kelly’s free time she likes to be outside, swimming, fishing and sports. Kelly loves wrestling and has begun cross fit training 3 to 4 days a week. Stop in and see Kelly and the wonderful things she is doing to make our residents feel at home and loved.
