Nearing their goal for clinic As shown on the thermometer to the left, the Ogden Clinic Project is now just $80,000 from its goal. “We are close,” says Ogden Legacy Chairman Craig Christensen. “But we would like to have a few more donations to reach our fundraising goal by the end of the year. This is a perfect opportunity for community members to take part in a great project and receive a tax benefit.” “We have made substantial progress,” says Sara Behn with the Boone County Hospital Foundation. “Every gift and any amount makes an impact and is appreciated.” (For those wishing to make a donation, a copy of the donor card appears on page two. Actual cards are available at Ogden City Hall). Groundbreaking for the medical clinic took place in May of this year. Cy Hornberg who is serving as liaison with the general contractor says their goal is to have the doctors move in the first of January with doors opening sometime in February. According to Hornberg and Christensen things are falling into place nicely. The dirt, rock and glass work is all done and most of the exterior is complete with the crew now steadily working on the inside. LEFT: Donor wall that will be installed in the clinic’s reception area. Names will be added later.

Ruth’s Reflections Dear Citizen of Ogden, In order to grow Ogden in the coming years, your help and support is needed. The Legacy Group has developed a plan that is twofold. The first goal is to build a new clinic building to continue a legacy of quality care started with Dr. Vermillion. The success of the clinic is dependent on the support of the community and the Leonard Good Trust. The second goal is to create a an economic development fund to continue to improve business development, building renovations and community betterment projects, particularly on Main Street to attract new business and support the existing businesses for years to come. The success of the economic development fund is also dependent on the support of the community and the USDA Loan.
This investment in our future will...
• Best serve the medical needs of our community. • Retain a viable economic presence in Ogden that serves our residents and surrounding areas. • Ensure the continuation of quality medical care in our area for generations to come. • Ogden Legacy and Boone County Hospital (BCH) have signed a letter of intent. A contract will soon be in place to retain BCH as the service provider and, eventually, the clinic building owner.

A huge winter storm this past weekend left much of New Mexico blanketed with snow. After hearing the predictions of a warmer than normal, dry winter, it was enough to make a person wonder who comes up with these weather reports. It rained hard for several hours Thursday night, then the rain turned to snow as the temps dropped. Saturday night the storm really hit, dumping several more inches of snow. After three years of severe drought, the moisture is great. I should be thrilled. I am. Really. Not. Not that I don’t appreciate the snow. It’s just that the timing is not good. It seems too early for all this cold and snow. But November typically is the start of winter weather and gray, cloudy days. Last week, watching some of the special memorial tributes to President Kennedy, I was reminded of that sad time many Novembers ago. I remember how gray and gloomy it was. Dr. Wayne W. Dwyer wrote the following: “As I look back on the assassination of President Kennedy, now 50 years later, I can see that he was destined to give up his life in order to have his own dharma fulfilled. I believe that there are no accidents in this spiritually ordained universe. The death of President Kennedy that day opened the door to long-overdue civil rights, voter rights, health care for the elderly, improved schools, and an awareness that equal rights were not just words to be spoken, but actions to be taken by all of us. This was the only way that the consciousness of our country could shift. “President Kennedy’s vision for a country populated by citizens who want to give and to serve more than take and receive, is a vision that I share as well. That he had to die in order to move the entire country in a new more compassionate direction is a part of the perfection of our universe. It can be argued interminably, but nevertheless it is so. He did die, and we all became better people as a result. And I too began my journey toward being a better person, and a career centered on service and compassion and love for everyone. My life might have had a different emphasis and direction had the events in Dallas that day not occurred.” As I read these words, it made me realize why Kennedy’s death had such an impact on me, even as a young child. The changes that occurred on many levels were huge. I hadn’t thought about it with the awareness Dr. Dwyer expressed, but I feel that he summed it up very well. And now, 50 years later, I would like to think that Kennedy’s vision remains strong. I believe that our country is populated by citizens who want to give and to serve more than to just take and receive. I feel fortunate to have met many wonderful people through my work here, with the horse rescue and the programs for equine-assisted therapy. But looking back, I realize that in the past 50 years I have met many, many compassionate, caring people in all walks of life. This is the week for remembering, reflecting and counting our blessings as family and friends come together for the holidays. Let us be thankful. When I get Dustee out for my traditional Thanksgiving Day ride this Thursday I’m going to be thankful for the snow, even if it did come a bit too early. It may be a very short ride! Until next time, Ruth B.

The church of Christ Who are these people? Matthew 26 talks about the Lord’s supper. Why do we partake on Sunday? We read in Matt 26:25-29 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” The kingdom was established on the day of Pentecost (Mk 9:1; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:1, 4) which was always observed on a Sunday according to Lev 23:15, 16. It was on this day that Jesus was raised from the dead (Matt 28:1; Mk 16:2, 9; Lk 24:1; Jn 20:1), and it was on this day of Pentecost that many became Christians. Acts 2:42 says, “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Paul writes concerning the Lord’s supper, “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come” (1 Cor. 11:26). Notice specifically the phrase, “As often as.” This indicates that it was not just once in a blue moon that they partook of the Lord’s Supper, but on a regular basis on the first day of the week. In Acts 20:7, we read, “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.” Paul expected the church to meet and he knew the day of their meeting. We can conclude from this that it was customary for the church to meet to worship once a week, and that this day was when they took of the Lord’s supper. So, “as often as” means “upon the first day of the week, every week.” How do we know that we need to partake of it upon every first day of the week? If I were to say to you that I go to volunteer at the community center on the third day of the week, you would understand me to mean, every Tuesday. The same was also true regarding the Sabbath day under the Old Law. God said, “Honor the Sabbath.” If the Israelites were to honor the Sabbath once a month, would that have been what God commanded? No. They were to honor every Sabbath and that was understood. See our broadcast on local channel 6 Sundays at 6 pm & Tuesdays, at 7 pm! “In Search of the Lord’s Way”, Sunday at 7:30 am on KCWI, cable Ch. 9! At least 10 inches of snow fell during two winter storms, and a slow dripping rain with temperatures hovering at freezing Saturday and Sunday made conditions here and throughout most of Iowa treacherous. The holiday season will once again be ushered in with music when Iowa State University’s Christmas Festival of Music is presented. Performances are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium.

Ogden 4th Graders host a “Nacho Party” Mustangs make it to the first round of championship series with special guests in attendance by JANNETTE THRANE
HOWE ELEMETARY LIBRARIAN
On Monday, Nov. 19, 22 fourth graders in Kim Swanson’s class were excited to have some additional party-goers attend their recent, “Nacho Party.” The extra guests just so happened to be OHS Head Football Coach, Garrison Carter, three of his senior football players, and the Ogden Bulldog mascot. Senior Varsity football players Caleb Frye, Henry Haglund, and Grant Heineman showed up in style wearing their Ogden blue jerseys and clutching their recently acquired 1A quarterfinal trophy while Colton Thrane proudly donned the mascot attire. The fourth graders earned this prestigious “Nacho Party,” by being the class that fund-raised the most money during the week of the Scholastic Book Fair (October 28-31). The competition was organized by Howe Elementary librarian, Jannette Thrane, and supported by the Ogden PTO. Swanson’s students raised $116.69 for their classroom teacher to spend at the Scholastic Book Fair. Every last penny was used to purchase books for her classroom library. Students in all PreK-4 classes participated in the fund-raising efforts and a total of $678.50 was raised. Teachers in every class at Howe Elementary now have new books on their classroom library shelves due to the enthusiastic efforts by the Howe Elementary students. During the “Nacho Party,” students chatted with Coach Carter, the football players, and tried to get the mascot to reveal his identity. Coach Carter commended Swanson’s students for their fund-raising efforts and reinforced the importance of students taking their learning seriously. He explained that he was not only proud of the football players for their hard work on the football field, but for their hard work and talent in band, chorus, art, drama, and additional Ogden sports. The “Nacho Party” ended with each football player reading a football related picture book to a group of students. There is no better way to reinforce the importance of reading to these students then by having these “rock star” players model it themselves! A big thank you goes out to Coach Carter and the senior boys who made this party “nach-o” ordinary kind of party!
