Buffalo Center businesses will face off this Christmas to see who has the most holiday spirit. North Iowa Betterment is challenging businesses to a Christmas window decorating contest, and each vote for the winner will help out a good cause. The contest begins following Thanksgiving, when businesses are asked to create holiday displays for their windows. The public will be able to vote for their favorite display, and voting will take place in the form of donations for the North Iowa Food for Families food pantry. Participating businesses will place a box at Johnson’s Food Center, and each item placed in a box, such as non-perishable food items and paper products, will count as a vote. People can vote as many times and for as many businesses as they wish. The business whose box receives the most items will be declared the winner. Voting begins Monday, Dec. 2 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 22. The winner will be named on Monday, Dec. 23. For more information about the contest, contact North Iowa Betterment at 562-2222.

violations and drunk drivers this week, as part of the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP). The department was awarded a grant through the program, which will facilitate extra hours for the highvisibility enforcement effort.

Buffalo Center celebrates 125 years in 2017
Community Thanksgiving service Wednesday
Buffalo Center will be celebrating its 125 year centennial in 2017. The public is invited to visit NIB to check out the commemorative crockery and t-shirts that are for sale. See the back page of this edition for a listing of products available and prices.
The entire community is invited to an ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve service this Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Pastor Mark Brickzin of Bethlehem Lutheran Church will deliver the message for this year’s service.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, nine traffic fatalities occurred during the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday. Six of those nine deaths were motorists who were not using seatbelts. Between January 1 and November 8 of this year, 263 Iowans lost their lives in traffic fatalities. That number is down 40 from the same period one year ago. Almost 39% of those killed were reported as not wearing their seat belts, while 26% were listed as unknown or could not be determined. More than 50% of all traffic fatalities, not including motorcycles and pedestrians, are the result of drivers/occupants not taking the time to buckle up. Motorists are reminded to buckle up, slow down and drive responsibly, in order to save lives and reduce crashes.
By Carol Mahnke Looking forward only to taking a shower without his boots on and being home with his wife, Jill, Sgt. Nich Wood, 29, was amazed when the sky lit up red, white and blue around Thompson, as he drove home from his third tour of duty, this one in Afghanistan, Saturday evening. He and Jill were escorted by fire engines with lights flashing from Thompson, Buffalo Center and Rake along Highway 9 and then north to their Rake home. “It was an awesome welcome, Wood said. “It feels really good! About 40 hardy Rake residents were gathered at the Rake Fire Department to welcome Wood home on that bitterly cold evening. “It really shows we live in a great community, he added. “It was really a surprise! He said his tour of duty “had its ups and downs. “For the most part it was uneventful, he said. “It was not what I expected – I thought it would be a lot worse. National Guard 833rd Engineering Company from Ottumwa had one of the toughest jobs in Afghanistan, clearing routes of IEDs (improvised explosive devices). Jill Wood, meanwhile, attended paramedic school in Iowa City and is just completing her final requirements now. She explains that school kept her mind occupied so she couldn’t dwell on what Nich was doing. Since U.S. troops were gradually withdrawing from the country, Wood’s company had to make do with less equipment as time went on. The 833rd would be the last Iowa unit to be deployed to a combat zone. Wood, chief mechanic, had to continually repair available equipment, sometimes scrambling for the parts he needed. “We still got our mission done, he said. He said he has “mixed emotions about how the 12-year war in Afghanistan is ending. “As soon as we

Wood said. “We’ve opened their eyesâ€? to possibilities in the 21st century world. Wood says he and his comrades presented themselves with pride and integrity, which deterred the enemy. Afghanistan is a quieter place than it’s been in previous years, according to Wood. The enemy apparently doesn’t want to mess with the “beehiveâ€? that is the United States presence, he explained. Grant for Grant #5 Grant #5 School House will continue to be preserved for future generations, thanks to a recent grant. Iowa Network Services (INS) and Winnebago Cooperative Telecom Association (WCTA) have awarded $500 to the Buffalo Center Historical Society, which will use the money for new windows at the school house. Built in the 1920’s, Grant #5 is located six miles south of Buffalo Center on County Road R20. The local historical society has been working to maintain the building, and they secured grant money for a new roof a few years ago. Each year, they host a field trip at the school house for local fourth graders, and they hope to add other events at the school house when they’ve completed restoration work. WCTA sponsored the historical society’s grant through the INS Charitable Grant Program. The INS grant totaled $300, while WCTA contributed a $200 donation. Pam Angstman of the B.C. Historical Society wrote the grant application. INS created the grant program in

Fall Festival draws shoppers to Lakota
Soup dinner benefits Lakota Ambulance
The Lakota Ambulance held its annual soup dinner on Sunday, Nov. 10 in the Lakota Eagle Center. Menu was chili and chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese or egg salad sandwich, bars and beverage. A portion of the proceeds will go to the purchase of a new tornado siren. Prentice Valvick of Sioux Falls holds his son Vance Valvick, who took advantage of the meal. Little Vance wanted to come down to help with field work.
The Annual Lakota Fall Festival, sponsored by the Lakota Betterment Club, was held on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Lakota Eagle Center. Door prizes were given away every half hour, with the vendors donating a prize for the drawing. There were many crafters and vendors, with baked goods, manicures, Watkins products, produce, candles, and much more. One of this year’s new vendors was “The Farmer’s Daughter fashion for dolls, sold by Carolyn Hansen of Armstrong.

Scams target utility customers Scam artists continue to target Iowans by threatening to disconnect their electric or natural gas service. This year alone, more than 400 Iowans reported a call or encounter with a scam artist to their local utility provider. Now, as the winter heating season approaches, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and a group of Iowa utilities and utility associations are warning Iowans about common warning signs and trends in each scam attempt. “The people attempting to scam Iowans are using the fear of going without electric or natural gas service, and they are unscrupulous in their attempts, said Mark Douglas, president of the Iowa Utility Association. “As an industry, we are work-
ing hard to help customers avoid getting caught off guard and becoming the next victim. The scam artists have used a variety of schemes and are primarily targeting customers of various ethnicities. Right now, the most common scam starts with a phone call from the scam artist claiming to represent a customer’s utility company and instructing the customer to make an immediate payment to avoid disconnection. Often, the caller requests that the customer purchase a prepaid debit card and call back with the information from the card. In other situations, the scam artist requests personal credit card information in order to fix a piece of equipment. While these scams vary and can involve any utility provider, the

ited phone call or an unannounced visit. • If someone calls claiming he/she represents a local utility provider and demands immediate payment, delayed payment through a Green Dot or pre-purchased card, or personal information, customers should hang up and call the customer service number on their utility bill. Do not give in to a high-pressure caller seeking personal information. • Customers should never allow anyone into their home or business for an unannounced visit to check on electrical wiring, cable or phone lines, natural gas pipes, or appliances unless they scheduled an appointment or are aware of a confirmed problem. Any time a utility employee arrives at the door, customers should require that the employee show proper identification. When in doubt, confirm the visit with the utility company. Customers should report attempted scams to local law enforcement. They also can notify the Iowa Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by visiting IowaAttorneyGeneral.gov or 888-777-4590.

ways to avoid falling victim are the same. “Trust your instincts. If you get a strange feeling from the caller, do not provide them any personal information,â€? said Gov. Branstad. “The best way to know your utility is on the other end of the line is to call them. When in doubt, hang up on the caller and call the number for your utility.â€? If customers have concerns about a call they received, they should contact their utility provider. Utility representatives can confirm whether the company contacted the customer and can confirm bill payments, service work or a service call to any address. Beware that scammers can spoof caller-ID displays, which means that they can mask the call’s true origin and make it appear as if it the call is coming from a utility company. Tips for customers: • Do not provide Social Security numbers, credit card or bank account information to anyone who requests that information during an unsolic-

FFA says thanks to farmers
Pork is on the menu for After Prom fundraiser
North Iowa juniors are conducting a raffle this fall to raise money for their annual After Prom party. Tickets are on sale now for a chance to win one of two processed hog halves, and the winners will be drawn during halftime of the boys’ home basketball game on Friday, Dec. 13. Participants do not need to be present to win. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased from any member of the junior class or at Farmers Trust and Savings Bank. North Iowa’s Prom and After Prom are scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2014. From left are juniors: Rebecca Murray, Alyssa Swearingen and Megan Moklestad.

Volunteer precipitation observers needed The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s State Climatology Office and the National Weather Service in Des Moines are recruiting volunteer precipitation observers across Iowa to participate in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network, known as “CoCoRaHS. All that is needed to participate is an interest in the weather, a four inch diameter rain gage and a suitable location to set up the gage. All data collected are immediately available for free online and are routinely used for flood forecasting, scientific
research and general weather interest. More information about the network is available on the CoCoRaHS web site at www.cocorahs.org. The website includes information on how to join, where to purchase your rain gage and how to accurately measure and report rain and snow. The network was established by the Colorado Climate Center in 1998 and has now spread to all fifty states and Canada. Iowa joined this volunteer network in 2007 and now has over 300 registered CoCoRaHS observers across the state. However,
more observers are needed to better document the amount and variability of rain and snow across Iowa. “This year Iowa has seen an amazing range of precipitation events, with the wettest spring season on record, including a record May snow event, followed by the second driest July to September period on record, said Harry Hillaker, State Climatologist for Iowa. “Whatever comes our way, the weather observations obtained by this network can be of great benefit in obtaining a clearer picture of Iowa’s weather.
Experienced farmers sought for training program Does your farm seek a highly motivated farm employee? Are you looking for a way to support the next generation of Iowa farmers by sharing your farming knowledge with an aspiring farmer? If so, consider becoming a trainer in Practical Farmers of Iowa’s Labor4Learning program. The program, now entering its second year, is an effort to help beginning farmers receive paid, onthe-job training while helping experienced farmers attract high-quality, motivated farm employees. Up to 15 trainer farms will be selected by a committee of Practical Farmers members. Farms of all sizes, enterprises, production practices and regions in Iowa are encouraged to apply. To be eligible to serve as a trainer, farmers must live or farm in Iowa and be Practical Farmers of Iowa members. To become a member, visit practicalfarmers.org or call the PFI office at 515-232-5661. Tom and Mary Cory, who raise grass-based livestock at Cory Family Farm near Elkhart, took on their first longer-term employee, Rory

Van Wyk, through the program last year and have been very pleased. “With our business growing, the Labor4Learning program was our nudge to go to the next level, Mary says, explaining that in the past, she and Tom have only hired daily help during hay baling or other temporary periods of heavy workloads. “They were always high school age, whereas Rory is in his mid-30s – not that age matters. But he had basic background experience, which was important in our situation. He’s also motivated, because his goal is to start a grass-based farm with his wife. Without PFI offering this program, I don’t know that we would have taken the leap. Program attributes: Approved trainer farms will receive a payment of up to $200 per month, not to exceed $1,000 per year. This money pays farmers to spend additional time educating trainees on farm business development – training that gives trainees knowledge and
business insights beyond the experience they gain performing tasks as a farm laborer. Training time may be flexible, on-the-job or of an informal nature, and should take about one to two hours per week. Trainers will also receive support learning about farm labor regulations. Trainees will receive other benefits, including: one paid day off to attend Practical Farmers events, such as field days; a special student rate discount to Practical Farmers’ annual conference; and special consideration for free lodging at a PFI member’s home during the 2015 annual conference. Practical Farmers of Iowa will help advertise and connect trainees to employment opportunities at trainer farms; hiring decisions are made by the farm trainers. An application is available at practicalfarmers.org, or request one by calling 515-232-5661. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 9.

Winnebago Industries in Forest City is planning to expand its manufacturing footprint to nearby Lake Mills. Winnebago and the city of Lake Mills have come to an agreement on the 5-year lease of the 100,000-square-foot plant formerly owned and operated by Cummins Filtration. The Lake Mills facility will be used for the production of Winnebago’s Class B motorhomes; initially the new Travato model built on the Ram ProMaster chassis. “This is a definite win-win for us, said Winnebago Chairman, CEO and President Randy Potts. “The Lake Mills facility is much larger than our current Class B production facility in Charles City and allows us to expand our growing Class B motorhome line. Winnebago’s Class B market share in the U.S. has been steadily rising, with 17.9% market share calendar year to date through September 2013, compared to 16.5% in calendar 2012 and 7.8% in calendar
Winnebago Industries plans to move production of its Class B Travato recreational vehicles to Lake Mills. 2011. “With the close proximity of Lake Mills, it’s very cost effective to transport components and motorhomes the 16 miles between Lake Mills and our headquarters in Forest City, said Potts. “In turn, it allows us to transition our current Class B production facility in Charles City to additional subassembly opera-
Consider an Iowa grown Christmas tree this holiday season Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey encourages Iowans to consider choosing a fresh, Iowa grown Christmas tree to decorate their home during the upcoming holiday season. “Selecting a fresh Christmas tree can be part of a great family tradition and is an opportunity to connect with an Iowa farmer and support the local economy, Northey said. “Iowa is fortunate to have more than 100 Christmas tree farms in all parts of the state, so everyone has the opportunity to get their own fresh tree to help celebrate. A directory of tree farms across Iowa is available on the Iowa Christmas Tree Grower’s website at www. IowaChristmasTrees.com. On the
site there is a “Find a Farmâ€? link on the top left-hand corner of the page. Besides the location of the farms, the directory also includes a phone number and hours of operation for each farm to assist in planning. These farms devote over 1,500 acres to Christmas tree production in Iowa and as a result harvest approximately 39,500 Christmas trees each year. The result is a $1 million dollar industry contributing to Iowa’s economy. Following are tips to keep in mind to make your trip to a Christmas tree farm more enjoyable: • Be sure you know what size tree fits in your home, both height and width, before you leave. Trees always look smaller in the field, and

there is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too big. • Wear comfortable cloths, sturdy shoes, and gloves that you aren’t afraid to get dirty. • Make sure the tree you pick has a straight trunk and will fit properly in your tree stand. • Fresh trees need water. Once you get your tree home, remember to check the water daily. Trees can use up to a gallon of water daily. • Make sure you unplug any tree lights before you leave home or go to bed. • Remember – fresh cut Christmas trees are biodegradable. Recycle your tree after Christmas. If you are not putting the tree up right away, store it in an unheated garage or some other area out of the wind and cold (freezing) temperatures. When bringing the tree into the house, cut off one inch at the base end and place the tree in a bucket of warm water. “Follow these tips and your will be able to enjoy a beautiful, fresh and locally grown Christmas tree throughout the holiday season,â€? Northey said.

LOCAL/LEGALS Buffalo Center City approves new fuel station PAGE 10 — Buffalo Center (Iowa) Tribune — Wednesday, November 27, 2013
The Buffalo Center City Council approved a permit for a new K&H fuel station during their monthly meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The Council heard from Mike Koppen of K&H Energy and Chad DeJoode of Westmor Industries on the new station, which is being installed on the south side of Highway 9. The station will offer a variety of fuel, including E10, E15, E30, E85 and diesel. There will be a satellite diesel pump, which will allow semi drivers to fuel both of their tanks at the same time. The station will also be the first in the county to offer Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The station will feature a canopy and aboveground tanks. Koppen said the main reason for the new station is to provide better access for semis than the current location at Buffalo Center Tire & Auto. They plan to keep that location open, where they will offer premium fuel, which contains no alcohol. In other business, Wayne Stef-

He had previously received the Council’s approval to install the cupola on the southwest corner of the building, and he asked if the Historical Society could install it on the southeast corner instead, to improve visibility. The Council approved the change to the project, which will be paid for by the Historical Society. Linda Bosma of North Iowa Betterment asked the Council if it would help to purchase a community Christmas tree to stand in downtown Buffalo Center during the holidays. “The community hasn’t had a Christmas tree in many years, said Bosma. She said someone had volunteered to donate decorations for the tree, which they would like to place on the east side of North Main Street between Buffalo Center Chiropractic and the Buffalo Center

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

School collecting pajamas for kids North Iowa High School TAG students are collecting pajamas this holiday season, as part of The Great Bedtime Story project. They are asking for the community’s help in donating new pairs of pajamas, to be sent to children in need. Pajama Program distributes new pajamas and new books to children in need, infant through age 17. These children live in various situations,
Students graduate from Iowa Lakes Community College Two local students received degrees during Summer Commencement at Iowa Lakes Community College in late July on the Emmetsburg campus. Ashley O’Connor of Buffalo Center earned her Associated in Science degree and Matthew Bartelt of Titonka earned his diploma in Construction Technology, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a GPA 3.75 to 4.00. The keynote speaker was Andrea Garrison, a nursing student who received her Associated in Applied Science degree. Iowa Lakes Community College offers associate degrees, diplomas and certificates.
including group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children the pajama project serves are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter. The PJ Drive is one of the philanthropic classroom programs offered through Classrooms Care, which aims to teach kids the value of giving and the gift of reading. In two short years, The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive has become the largest PJ drive in Pajama Program’s history. Last year, in November and early December, classrooms across America collected and donated more than 93,000 pairs of pajamas. Scholastic Book Clubs matched each one of those pairs of pajamas with a book donation to Pajama Program. Scholastic is hoping to see this year’s PJ Drive hit a new record of 125,000 pairs of pajamas and matching books. North Iowa TAG students have placed donation boxes at the east and south doors of the school and will be collecting pajamas through Dec. 13.
