Beeds Lake sonar search yields no new leads in Kazmerzak search By Jeff Forward The ongoing search for missing Hampton man Ethan Kazmerzak remains at a standstill after a sonar search of Beeds Lake and other local bodies of water uncovered no new leads Friday. A volunteer team from Bruce’s Legacy, a non-profit search and rescue group from Black River Falls, Wis., used high resolution sonar equipment to scan the murky depths of Beeds Lake and other ponds located on Olive Avenue, according to a release from the Hampton Police Department. Kazmerzak was last seen near the ponds the night of his disappearance on Sept. 15, and local law enforcement jumped at the opportunity to utilize the sonar despite doubts.

“They found exactly what we thought they would: nothing, Franklin County Sheriff Larry Rictsmeier said at Monday’s board of supervisors meeting. A dive team previously searched the ponds in September and found nothing. Richtsmeier said Bruce’s Legacy had new equipment they wanted to try out, which prompted the sonar search. The group only asked for compensation of gas and lodging for their services. “They said they didn’t see anything, but they wanted to review it because one of them is driving the boat when they do it, said Richtsmeier. “It wasn’t that we had a new tip, just more follow up. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Hampton Police Department and Franklin County Emergency

Management assisted in the sonar search, which was yet another dead end in the two and a half-month long search for Kazamerzak. Richtsmeier said last week the offer of a $20,000 reward for his whereabouts had led to a small infusion of new leads, but that none of them had any merit and authorities are still confounded by the mysterious case. Two psychic readers even contacted authorities and offered tips onto the missing Hampton man’s location. “We’ve had some phone calls, but nothing of any substance, Richtsmeier said. “We had one, he’s a visionary, he was from out of the area. He gave us a location, it wasn’t even in the county, but it did not pan out. Richtsmeier added that authori-

ties have not revisited any leads from earlier in the case but they may at some point go back and interview the four to six people Kazmerzak was last known to be associating with the night of Sept. 14. The $20,000 reward – which is for information that leads to the location or safe return of Kazmerzak – was put together by a group of local and anonymous citizens. The original offer was set to expire on Dec. 2. “I think they’re going to extend it, they want to limit it rather than keep it open ended, Richtsmeier said of the reward. “One of the concerns we have is someone thinks it’ll be increased. One of the concerns is they’re holding out for more. It’s not going to happen. The SEARCH to page 5

Supervisors talk lawsuit, dispatchers at Monday meeting By Nick Pedley Franklin County may get financial assistance to help with attorney fees in an ongoing lawsuit filed by one victim of former Hampton doctor Brian J. Hansen. The board of supervisors heard an update at their Monday meeting regarding funds from the Iowa Community Assurance Pool (ICAP) that might help cover escalating legal fees associated with a lawsuit the county was named in two months ago. The lawsuit, filed by one of Hansen’s victims, Nicole Whitney, names eight total defendants and alleges a long list of accusations including sexual harassment, sex and disability discrimination, retaliation and sexual exploitation, among others. Franklin General Hospital, FGH CEO Kim Price, human resources manager Victoria Kruse, Mercy Medical Center – Iowa Corp., Mercy Health Services – Iowa Corp.,

Mercy Health Network, Inc. and Hansen are the others listed in the lawsuit. Franklin County was named because FGH is partially funded with county tax revenue, but the board of supervisors has no involvement or control over operational procedures and oversight at FGH. “We shouldn’t be involved, supervisor Chairman Corey Eberling said after the meeting. “Basically, we share a name – Franklin County. That’s it. Unfortunately, the financial burden has been put on us to get out of it. ICAP would only pay for legal fees associated with the case, not any potential settlement. The board – who was one member short due to Mike Nolte’s absence – felt the lawsuit’s inclusion of the county was unwarranted due to the county’s lack of involvement with the case and hospital. Both Eberling and Supervisor Jerry Plagge said

the prosecution’s legal council was grasping. “When you file a name in a lawsuit, there should be some reason why you’re being named, said Plagge. “There has to be some basis. The lawsuit has created other expenses in addition to the legal fees. Franklin County Courthouse IT Director Gabe Johannes met with the board and discussed the need for additional computer backup memory in the building. The county started storing all data from courthouse computers after it was named to the Whitney lawsuit, and the supervisors hope the tactic provides back-up evidence indicating the county had nothing to do with the case, thus vindicating its dismissal. The massive amount of data has forced Johannes to purchase additional electronic storage devices, in turn straining his department’s

finances. “It’s quickly going to lopside my budget if we have to do months and months of maintenance, said Johannes. “I’m just letting you guys know, it’s going to be a burden on my budget. But until we are actually dismissed, we have to do it. Johannes said the IT department could handle the expenses in the short-term, but said the supervisors should be aware of the potential for long-term costs. Both Eberling and Plagge understood Johannes’ concerns, and hoped the county could get removed from the lawsuit soon to eliminate the need for additional back-up space. “To us, it’s a really frivolous lawsuit, Eberling said in a phone interview. “I just wish attorneys would be held more accountable. The supervisors also gave an update on the progress between the county and City of Hampton SUPERVISORS to page 5

Popular country singer Justin Moore will take over the grandstand stage on Saturday night and the multi award winning country group Sawyer Brown stars in a Friday concert. The fair also has signed the Barnes PRCA Rodeo for Wednesday and will soon finalize the rest of the schedule. “POP Pass gift certificates have sold well as Christmas gifts the last few years, commented Fair Board President Jon Baltes. “The board thought it would be great if we could announce our concerts and offer a one-time special for the holidays! He added that POP Pass sales have always been a fund raiser for the county 4-H clubs. “In keeping with that tradition, a portion of the sales will go to Franklin County 4-H. A POP Pass allows the holder grandstand admission every night of the fair to all five shows. On Black Friday, November 29, POP

Pass gift certificates will only be sold for $30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fair office in the Franklin County Convention Center in Hampton or by calling 641-456-2049. He has charted eight times on the Hot Country Songs charts, including the number one hits “Small Town USA, “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away, and “Til My Last Day and the Top 10 hits “Backwoods and “Point at You. Sheffield-Chapin also made 6 of 11 gifters and totaled 17 rebounds, seven steals and gave away 12 turnovers. The Sheffield-Chapin Spartanettes downed North Central Manly in their regular opener 62-45. The first half Traci Prall had the hot hand as she pumped in 21 points. Kris Peters came off the bench in the front court and poured fuel on the fire as she added to the points and had one steal. Kathy Smit added three and Lisa Heuberger two to round out the scoring. I’m thankful for‌

Thanksgiving is definitely one of my Top 3 favorite holidays. I get to see old friends and spend time with family, which is becoming more and more difficult these days. The food isn’t bad, either – I love stuffing my face with turkey and all the other fixings. Thanksgiving’s just awesome. This sacred American holiday gives me time to reflect on all the reasons I have to be thankful. Admittedly, I lose sight of these from time-to-time. I get busy, frustrated or consumed with worries about seemingly trivial things, and I forget just how good I have it. What follows is a David Letterman-style list of my Top 10 “thanks for 2013. Some are more serious than others, but each one gave me a reason to be thankful this year. 10. My dog. I don’t get to see this ol’ hound as much as I’d like to, but he makes the Top 10 nonetheless. He’s a troublemaker, and rather ornery. Not a day goes by without my parents wishing my landlord allowed pets so he could move to Hampton and stay with me. Despite his devilish tendencies, he’s provided me with years of unwavering loyalty and affection, and that definitely

deserves a nod of appreciation. 9. The Iowa Hawkeyes. My Hawks have given me a surprising amount of joy this year. The football team has made marked improvement this fall, and the basketball team has continued to rise to success on the hardwood. I’m also thankful I’m not a Cyclone. 8. My grill. It’s small, it’s charcoal and it’s not much to look at, but I had fun expanding my cooking prowess on it this summer. I’m still honing my skills, but I have to admit my cooking has gotten rather good. And on a more self-serving level to any interested ladies out there: I’m a single guy that can cook – what a catch, am I right? 7. Student loans. This entry might come as a surprise, but I am thankful for these things. I’ll admit that it’s sort of bittersweet, but these loans allowed me to obtain an education and earn my degree. Without them, my college experience would have been impossible. 6. My car. Sometimes I curse this frustrating 11-year-old piece of‌equipment, but I’m thankful to have a set of wheels, I guess. It gets good mileage for a 2002, but sometimes repair costs boil

my blood. In any case, I’m happy to have her and I hope she lasts another 150,000 miles. My aforementioned student loans would make buying another one rather difficult. 5. My neighbors. They’ve been great to me every since I moved to Hampton. They’ve been welcoming and helpful, and they’re always willing to let me borrow anything I need. Their generosity has been wonderful. 4. My friends. You grow to appreciate your friends as you grow older and move on to different things in life. I learned this firsthand after graduating this year. The friends I made in college were awesome, and I really miss spending time with all my buddies. They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, and I can say that’s true. 3. My job. I can’t thank Mid America Publishing enough for taking a chance on this recent

college grad and giving me employment. I’ve met a lot of great people since joining the staff, and I’m excited to meet many more and grow in the community. 2. My family. Having such a great network of support has been the cornerstone of each and every one of my successes in life. It’s hard to imagine where I’d be without their love, support and encouragement. I’m certainly lucky to have them. 1. My parents. This was an easy choice. My parents have been there for me no matter what – be it my achievements or one of my MANY boneheaded mistakes. They’ve nurtured my love of newspapers and journalism, and without their help I’d be much worse off. I can’t think of two better people, and I’m most thankful and proud to call them mom and dad. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Once again I’m thankful for in indoor job! Just went out to get the mail at the post office and rediscovered how much I dislike cold weather! Been busy as usual. Once in a while I think I’m getting caught up . . . but that’s short lived! And now with the holidays approaching, it will get even busier with all the different things going on. Basketball games, winter concerts, Christmas for the kids and adults, plus the normal routine will keep me from doing any slowing down. Plus somewhere along the way I still have some Christmas shopping to finish. Angie said she would take another day off to help me complete that task. Now I need to find the time. Maybe a Saturday or Sunday. I have to find the time to spend the cash! Even forbid I should have some left by December 26th! Home . . . nothing exciting going on at the adobe. Thursday night I attended a Lutefisk supper. Actually . . . I enjoyed it. Even the lutefisk tasted good after seasoning it with a lot of salt and pepper! Saturday evening a movie . . . and Sunday pretty much a day of rest. I know I said I would be heading to Altoona this past week end . . . but that didn’t materialize. I will be heading down there Thanksgiving Day and again on Saturday for a post-Thanksgiving dinner. Do I take something for the meal? You bet . . . I always take the only thing I know how to cook: two 12-packs of soda! Always done to perfection! Monday night went to a meeting and then home early to do some of my maids chores: washing and drying, a (very) little dusting, clean sheets on the bed, etc. Still don’t have the convertible back in my own garage. I understand the second hose that was sent

was defective. I’ll get it back someday. Like I said . . . it’s not like I’m going to any car shows or parades in the near future! Oh, one other little incident that happened during the week. On my way to Mason City one evening two loud bangs hit my car, both on the windshield with one also hitting the roof right above the windshield, leaving “debris about the size of a softball. Not being an expert on goose poop, I’m still pretty sure that’s what it was. I guess I should have gotten it off the paint right away . . . as it took some effort to bring the shine back. Story of my life: always getting, well, you know what! Poor me! Be good, Kids+! It’s Showtime!

Floyd County man threatens area law enforcement On Saturday, Nov. 23, beginning at approximately 5:39 a.m., the Hampton Police Department received a call on the 911 and administrative phone lines. These calls were found to be made by John Edwin Marzen, Marble Rock, according to a release provided by the Hampton Police Department. The caller asked for a deputy and also claimed that he was south of Sheffield and hadn’t found a cop. He also called 911 to report that he had “seen an officer shot south of FS” in Hampton. When officers tried to locate the vehicle, it had left the area. Dispatch received another 911 call, and the caller said he was run off the road by a white pick-up at the intersection of 120th and Olive. This led to a search of that area and the southern part of Franklin County. Marzen could not be located and information was sent to Floyd County to watch for the individual.

He was later arrested at the StopN-Shop in Marble Rock and transported to the Floyd County Jail on their charges. His bond was set at $9,000, the release states. Hampton Police Chief Robert

Schaefer said on Monday two loaded guns – a .40-caliber handgun and loaded 12-gauge shotgun – were found in Marzens vehicle at the time of his arrest. Hampton police charges are

pending. Assisting local law enforcement in the search for Marzen were the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Falls Police Department.

With that date approaching quickly, Staley said he will confer with Kazmerzak’s parents as well as other members of the reward committee about possibly extending the expiration date of the reward. Kazmerzak went missing at about 12 a.m. on Sept. 15 after an evening of partying at various locations around Hampton and Franklin County. A week-long, multi-pronged search was conducted beginning on Sept. 16, including aerial patrols, foot and vehicle searches, and a dive team scouring a gravel pit pond where Kazmerzak was last seen. The searches turned up nothing and eventually, law enforcement officials called off the daily efforts. Since then, police and sheriff’s officials have fielded dozens of tips about the possible location of Kazmerzak, all to no avail. They also widened the search area, sending out notices about Kazmerzak to cities across Iowa and also in neighboring states. Kazmerzak has not used his cell phone since Sept. 15 at about 12:30 a.m.; his car – a silver Volkswagen Jetta – is also missing; and he has not used his credit cards or bank ATM card since Sept. 14. Kazmerzak is described as 22-yearsold, 5-foot, 5-inches tall and about 185 pounds. He wears Drew Carey-style eyeglasses and has blonde hair with a reddish beard. He was last seen wearing a peach colored shorts and a blue shirt. He has a Grateful Dead tattoo on his left arm. Anyone who sees Kazmerzak or his car is urged to immediately call 911 or the Hampton police at (641) 456-2529. Police are asking anyone who may come in contact with Kazmerzak to not interact with him because they are fearful he may flee if he knows someone has found him. Nick Pedley contributed to this article. SUPERVISORS from page 1 regarding the situation of the 911 dispatchers. The two entities are in the midst of hashing out a deal so the dispatchers can be transferred from city employees to employees of the Franklin County Emergency Management Commission, but the process has been long and drawn out. Hampton City Manager Ron Dunt met briefly during the public comment session and asked about the progress on a deal. “From the city’s standpoint, we’d like to see something done as soon as possible,” he said. Eberling understood, and said the supervisors need to look into a few more details on the contract so it aligns with union benefits and other standards. Both v Franklin County Auditor Michelle Giddings and the supervisors reiterated that they felt a deal was in sight. “I apologize, and it’s not like I’m trying to hold things up, but it seems

Talking Turkey at West Fork Middle School

West Fork Middle School Rockwell Campus has a new mascot in the new gym this week. A large turkey was constructed by the students to show the many things they are thankful for. The main body was designed and made by the 8th grade students with other middle schoolers making the feathers. Featured as feathers are basketballs, footballs, softballs, and volley balls. All elementary and middle schoolers added feathers as they remembered their many blessing. Standing over 8 feet tall, it shows all we can be thankful for. Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

“I’m guessing we’re not gonna get a lot of response, Strike said at the meeting. “I’d like to do it like they do in district football – you look at the environment and make adjustments every few years. “If you ask me how this turns out, I think this is going to evolve and take on many different looks. With conference stalwart Riceville seeking a new conference home in the Iowa Star, Strike is looking to be pro-active. “I’m keeping us in the game, so to speak, Strike said. “There’s a lot of chatter going on right now.
