The Ostrander Family recently counted thirty-eight family members who have graduated or attended what is now defined as the North Iowa Community Schools. The Kindergarten through fourth graders will present their annual Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 4 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. 20 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 2, 1993 Bison Senior Jon Potter was honored after Coach Don Anderson announced that John was selected on the 1993 “All-Academic Football Team in the Division Class 2A. Jason Heyer was named to the Honorable Mention. Both boys received a GPA of 3.25 or better and have been on the football squad all four years of high school. Children attending the Lakota school got the true Christmas Spirit of giving and sharing last week. This activity came about as a result of Dennis Kearney, school custodian, reading a letter in the Buffalo Center Tribune recently. The letter was about Ruth Hickok; formerly of Buffalo Center. Ruth rode the “Orphan Train from New York to the Midwest with many other children. All of the children were seeking adoption in the Midwest. be a good Christmas for children in the orphanage. 30 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 1, 1983 People will remember late November, 1983, if for no other reason, than the problems brought about by the two separate snow storms within a 5-day period. School was dismissed early on Wednesday giving students extra days of vacation for the Thanksgiving holiday, and returned to school the next Wednesday. Thankful for the arrival of Gregory Risius were his parents, Kenneth and Katherine Kiewiet Risius. He was born at the United Hospital, Blue Earth, MN on Thanksgiving Day. 40 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 5, 1973 Bill Becker shot a 12 point buck deer while hunting in the river bottoms near Algona. He was hunting with a party of four and they were able to get two deer. Becker has shot deer in Iowa, Montana, and Wyoming. Arrival of the first snow storm of the season came that was severe enough to cause early dismissal of schools in the area. The storm dumped 5-8 inches of snow in this vicinity. 50 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 5, 1963 The Buffalo Center Lions Club will visit the Winnebago County Home on Wednesday where they will entertain the residents with music. Later, they gave each one a sack of fruit, candy and nuts. The members enjoy doing it and the residents look forwards to their visit.

TMNH %\ &DPPL $QGHUVRQ $FWLYLW\ 'LUHFWRU We all hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and friends. I personally, had a great day and more then enough to eat. It was nice to spend time with family I don’t get to see that often. Gary Boyken, from First Baptist, did the church services on Sunday. Thanks, Gary, for leading the worship services this week. Monday morning, we had our Mystery Hour. I read A Cash Transfer at the Good Eats Diner, and the residents solved the mystery. Today, we are trying something new during our sensory groups. It’s aroma therapy. We now have an aroma steam machine to use and roll on scents. I’m so exited to start such a new up and coming sensory program. We will have this now every week. Betty Coxson came in for our weekly short stories program. Thank you, Betty. For games today, Monica played basketball with the residents. During Man Cave, we had pizza quesadillas, beer and we played Uno. Tuesday, we listened to Glen Miller during our Sit and Get Fit Class. Afterwards, we had our senior college class, or should I say TMNH university class. At both sensory groups, we played Finishing Lines.
Since I was gone on Wednesday, we had Bingo today. Twenty-one residents played, and sixteen prizes were won. At 3:00 p.m., Monica played the Dice Game with the residents. Wednesday, Danielle led our exercise group. We are so lucky that we have staff to help each other out when needed. Thank you, Danielle. For morning sensory teasers, we watched Lights, Camera Branson. The game of the day was Bean Bag Toss. During the evening sensory group, Monica read the Buffalo Center Tribune and discussed current events. Thanksgiving Day, we watched the movie The Dog Who Saved the Holiday. The residents enjoyed their Thanksgiving feast and all the company they had. Friday, we watched The Lawrence Welk Christmas Reunion during our morning sensory group. At 3:00 p.m., we had our weekly Happy Hour, and for Monica’s sensory group, she gave hand and back massages. Keep this date open, December 12 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.; we will be having a retirement party for Murray Berggren. Please come in and wish him a happy retirement.

WISH board meeting held November 25 The Winnebago Individuals Sharing Hope board held its annual meeting on Monday, November 25 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson. W.I.S.H. was created in the summer of 2012 as a countywide effort focused on serving families in crisis by providing donated items for daily living. Co-chairperson Becki Thompson called the meeting to order, and the board spent the meeting reviewing the past year’s accomplishments and establishing goals for the 2014 year. During the first year of existence, the center met needs of 31 families with children. Those served were from Forest City, Lake Mills, Thompson, Rake, and Buffalo Center. Over the past year, W.I.S.H. Director Teresa Cooper presented to various civic organizations and gatherings throughout the county. The board recognized the donation of lumber for shelving from Shropshire Lumber, as well as the carpentry skills of Kelly Sabin Construction and Duane Cooper. Bethany Lutheran Church houses W.I.S.H., but the board members emphasize
the fact the center is a county-wide center. The Winnebago County Farm Bureau provides storage space for larger furniture items and seasonal clothing. Goals for 2014 are: to provide families in need with a “hand up, provide individuals who qualify with necessary household and clothing items, and to provide individuals in need with contact information for services available to meet the financial, emotional, spiritual, and their relational concerns. Becki Thompson will continue as co-chairperson with Gloria Johnson, and Larry Hill will continue as W.I.S.H. secretary. Pastor Lynn Noel will replace Pastor Perry Aalgaard as treasurer of the group. Winnebago Individuals Sharing Hope is a not-for-profit entity. Donations of new and slightly used clothing may be made during center hours; Thursdays from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and the third Saturday of each month from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Financial donations can be made through area pastors or by contacting Teresa Cooper at 515-538-0231.

NEWS Miller receives maximum sentence A Thompson man convicted of sexual abuse will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. Clarence Miller, 81, was sentenced to serve the maximum 50 years in prison, following his conviction this October on two counts of second-degree sexual abuse against two 8-year-old girls. District Judge DeDra Schroeder handed down the sentence in Winnebago County District Court on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Miller was ordered to serve 25 years on each count, with the sentences running consecutively. He must serve at least 35 years of his sentence before he could be eligible for parole. Schroeder also denied a request by Miller on Tuesday for a new trial. Miller was originally charged with six counts of second-degree sexual abuse in August of 2012. Following his conviction on two counts last month, the Winnebago County AttorClarence Miller ney dismissed the remaining charges without prejudice, meaning the state could choose to prosecute Miller on those charges in the future.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Iowa Lakes are freezing over
Cold weather settled in over the upper Midwest sealing many Iowa lakes under a layer of ice. As a reminder, a minimum of four inches of quality ice is recommended for fishing and at least five inches for snowmobiles and ATVs. Safety Tips on the Ice ¡ There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice. ¡ Ice fishing is a social activity, don’t go out alone. If the worst should happen, someone would be there to call for help or to rescue. ¡ There could be pockets of thin ice or places where ice recently formed, so it would be wise to check ice thickness as you go out. ¡ Ice thickness is not uniform on any body of water. Things like current and springs slow ice growth. Rocks, trees or docks that poke through the ice like will conduct heat and make the ice around it less stable. ¡ Avoid off-colored snow or ice. It is usually a sign of weakness. ¡ The insulating effect of snow slows down the freezing process. ¡ Safety items in the bucket: Ice picks, about 50 feet of rope and a throwable floatation seat cushion for use in case of rescue. NORTHWEST Brushy Creek Lake The main lake is still open, but ice is starting to form near shore and in the upper part of the lake. Bacon Creek Lake Bacon Creek was stocked with 1,500 catchable size rainbow trout on Nov. 20th. Bacon Creek is mostly covered with ice and ice thickness is
around 1.5 inches. Rainbow Trout Excellent: Anglers have been catching limits of rainbow trout casting very small spinners and Kastmasters. Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake) Storm Lake has about 1.5 inches of ice in most areas. Black Hawk Lake Black Hawk Lake has around 3 inches of ice. There is open water in the Town Bay area. Arrowhead Lake There is around 2 to 2.5 inches of ice on Arrowhead Lake. Black Hawk Pits There is around 2 to 2.5 inches of ice on Black Hawk Pits. Moorland Pond Moorland Pond was stocked with 1,500 catchable size rainbow trout on Nov. 16th. Rainbow Trout - Excellent: Anglers have been catching limits of rainbow trout casting small spinners and Kastmasters. For more information on lakes, ponds, and rivers in the Black Hawk District contact the District Office at 712-657-2638. Clear Lake Clear Lake is mostly covered with ice. Ice thickness is 2 to 3 inches. If you venture out use caution and drill test holes as you go. Blue Pit Blue Pit was stocked with 1,500 catchable size rainbow trout on Nov. 27th. For lake updates and fishing information in the north central area contact the Clear Lake Fish and Wildlife office at 641-357-3517. Big Spirit Lake Iowa Great Lakes - Limited fishing activity at this time. Shallow lakes have ice; however, ice conditions are unsafe with less than one inch of ice. Scharnberg Pond 1,500 rainbow trout were stocked Nov. 9th. Iowa Great Lakes - Limited fishing activity at this time. Night time wader fishing is a key component.

Some activity is also present at the north grade. NORTHEAST Volga Lake The lake recently froze over and there is a small amount of snow cover in places. Please use caution when going on the ice. Bluegill - No Report: Crappie - No Report: Lake Hendricks Ice is about two inches thick but very spotty. Use caution when going out on ice especially around the aerator. Bluegill - No Report: Crappie - No Report: Lake Meyer The lake has been covered with ice for about five days but no one has ventured out. Please use caution when going out on newly formed ice. Check ice thickness often. Bluegill No Report: Crappie - No Report: Upper Iowa River (above Decorah) Fish have moved into their overwintering holes. Smallmouth Bass - No Report: Walleye - Slow: Anglers are having luck using jigs tipped with a twistertail. Try fishing off the bottom. Fish are biting really light. Upper Iowa River (below Decorah) Fish have moved into their overwintering holes. Smallmouth Bass - No Report: Walleye - Slow: Anglers are having success using a variety of jigs tipped with a twistertail. Use a slow presentation. Yellow River Fishing out of a canoe or kayak is allowed without landowner permission. Wading or fishing from the bank requires landowner permission. Turkey River (above Clermont) The Vernon Springs impoundment near Cresco has frozen over. Use caution when walking out on ice where there is flow. Check ice depths often. Fish will likely be found in deeper holes. Turkey River (below Clermont) We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week. Cedar River (above Nashua) Many backwater and slack water areas are frozen. Use caution when walking out on new ice as depths may vary especially in areas where there is flow or springs. Northern Pike - Fair: Anglers are picking up a few pike. Smallmouth Bass - Slow: Walleye - Slow: Anglers are using jigs tipped with minnows. Anglers are finding fish near the bottom of the deeper holes. Decorah District Streams With colder weather in the forecast, autumn blue wing olive hatches are beginning to wind down. Af-
ternoon #20-#24 blue wings can continue sporadically throughout the winter months. Wooly bugger patterns in bright yellows or whites have been very effective in fast water. Flashy streamer patterns are good choices for early winter fishing. Weekend weather forecast is calling for sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 30s. Angling pressure remains very low. Most area lakes and backwaters now have ice.
Be careful when walking on new ice. Fluctuating temperatures, flow, wind and rain can change conditions quickly. Urban ponds are now being stocked with trout. Go to www. iowadnr.gov/Fishing/TroutFishing. aspx to find out when and where. For more information, call the Decorah Fish Hatchery at 563-382-8324. Cedar River (Nashua to La Porte City) The Cedar River still remains good for walleye using jigs and plas-
tics tipped with a minnow. Walleye - Good: Concentrate on the drop-offs and along current breaks in 4 to 5 feet of water. Wapsi River (Tripoli to Troy Mills) There have been few angling reports on the Wapsipinicon River this past week but walleye fishing should remain good. Walleye - Good: Jig and plastic tipped with a minnow has been good on the deeper holes, dropoffs and current breaks.

Middle School boys drop back to back games The North Iowa 7th and 8th grade boys each lost two matches on backto-back nights before the Thanksgiving break. The boys traveled to Swea City on Thursday, Nov. 21, where the seventh grade boys fell 34-26 to North Union. “Having only six guys able to play put us in a tough spot, but the boys hung tough for three quarters, even leading at halftime, before running out of gas in the fourth quarter, said Coach Thomas Ullmann. “Even being tired at the end, we still shot 43% from the field, which is well above the previous two games. The eighth grade boys had trouble making their shots, as they fell 3622 to North Union. The Bison were 7/41 in field goal shooting and 42% at the free throw line. Leading scorer was Damon Olson, while Taylor Baumann led the way in rebounds,
and Jordan Boekelman led in steals. The Bison hosted Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Friday, Nov. 22, when the seventh graders suffered a 44-8 loss in Thompson. “Having played a tight game the night before the limited numbers really became apparent, said Coach Ullmann. “Having only six guys means everyone has to be 100% the whole game, but that wasn’t the case Friday, thanks to the last night’s game. One silver lining was that they made their first free throws of the season. It was apparent early that the GHV boys had come ready to play. The eighth graders had a similar night on the court, as they fell to the Cardinals, 49-11. Boekelman led North Iowa in scoring with seven points, including a three-pointer. Nate Beenken made a field goal and a free throw, while Isaac Embrock also chipped in a free throw.

Vikings and Warriors take first two games over Lady Bison
Rachel Boekelman throws a pass in last Tuesday’s game against North Union. Boekelman had eight points, two rebounds and two steals for North Iowa.
The Lady Bison are off to a slow start but are already showing signs of improvement this basketball season. The North Iowa girls opened their season on Friday, Nov. 22, when they faced Northwood-Kensett in a 65-35 loss at Northwood. The Vikings took the early lead over North Iowa, as they held a 17-4 advantage after the first quarter. N-K led the scoring in each of the remaining quarters, as well, to pick up the opening day win. Paige Hassebroek was the leading scorer for the Lady Bison with 10 points, followed by Carly Main with six, Rachel Boekelman five and Jenna Koppen, Krista Hovland and Kendall Melz with four points each. Mica Johnson added two points. Hovland led in rebounds with nine, followed by Boekelman and Hassebroek with three apiece. Hovland had three steals, and Main and Kayla Stelter each had two. “Suffice it to say, we had a team breakdown in our focus and concentration – leading to numerous fundamental mistakes and easy looks for our opponents at and around the basket, said Lady Bison Head Coach Rob Riedinger. “We will be looking for a vast improvement in all phases of the game vs. North Union on Tuesday. North Iowa held the lead for the first half of the contest, 21-15, but the Warriors came back to top the Lady Bison by three points, 42-39. Hassebroek commanded North Iowa’s offense with 20 points, followed by Boekelman and Hovland with eight each. Boekelman also shot one three-pointer. Hovland
totaled 14 rebounds, followed by Hassebroek with eight and Rebecca Murray with four. Hovland had three steals, followed by Boekelman with two and Hassebroek with one. “I was proud of the girls, said Coach Riedinger. “They played a much better overall game and showed some competitive spirit and effort on both ends of the floor. We had some good play off the bench
with Rebecca on the boards and good defensive play from her and Mica. Our turnovers were down, and that helped us build a lead only to relinquish it in the fourth quarter with fouls and some costly late mistakes. We are looking for another step in the overall improvement of both our defense and offense Monday night against West Bend.
