John and Jann Kuehner, owners of the White House. (Photo by Joyce Meyer) By Joyce Meyer With the holidays around the corner and family home, many people venture off the beaten path to St. Lucas in Northeast Iowa to the White House Supper Club owned by Jann and John Kuehner to celebrate with friends and family. This place has been known for their fabulous food, especially steak and lobster, all the way back
to when Jann’s parents, Mark and the late Marge Mihm, opened the place in 1965 and the tradition of great food and service has continued with Jann and John, who took over in 1978. It’s almost like the theme song of the old TV show Cheers, “Where every body knows your name and they’re always glad you came” because they treat their cus-

tomers like family and that is why on almost any given evening the place is packed. There is not much else in the town with the population of about 175 people that would draw such a crowd to this pretty, scenic town, which is well worth the drive. But the draw is simple. Tradition. They are known for great food and great service and that keeps people com-
ing back! And it sure doesn’t hurt that they serve up a delicious relish tray with dip and garlic toast before your meal arrives. My husband likes to go on Saturday night’s when they have prime rib, and I like their ribeye, filet mignon or jumbo shrimp. But to begin with, I especially enjoy their peach daiquiri that John makes! Next time you are there, make sure
you try one and you will find you just may have to have at least one each time you come, they are that addicting! Prices? Not bad. Filet mignon is $15.95 for a 7-ounce and $19.95 for a 10-ounce portion. Choice of potato and salad, relish tray, garlic toast and crackers are included. At one time Mark Mihm owned the restaurant, jewelry store, and WHITE HOUSE to page 3

Winneshiek Medical Center and Mayo Clinic Health System physicians are pleased to welcome Bridgette Mitchell to the Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine team. Bridgette recently joined the staff to provide increased access to Pilates classes, which are offered daily at various times in the newly renovated WMC Rehab Fitness Studio. Bridgette, a life-long fitness enthusiast, first tried Pilates at Winneshiek Medical Center when physical therapist Shauna Menke, DPT and certified Stott Pilates instructor began the program. “I was getting tired of the traditional aerobic workout and was ready for something completely different,” says Bridgette. “Pilates strengthens the body from the inside out by focusing on the core – it is a mind/body workout.” Bridgette became certified to be an instructor at the Sweat Shop in St. Paul, MN last June. “I was excited to gain a deeper understanding of Pilates and the techniques that are specific to Stott Pilates, which we teach at WMC. It is truly a safe and effective workout for people at any fitness level, and most exercises can be easily modified to fit personal needs and abilities.” Stott Pilates emphasizes five basic principles that are incorporated into every exercise. These principles focus on proper positioning which facilitates correct muscle engagement, increased body awareness, and mindfulness. Although Pilates has been around for years, Stott Pilates has modified many of the classic exercises to incorporate the newest medical research for a more contemporary fitness approach. Bridgette and Shauna work alongside each other to provide classes to the community. All exercises are performed in a safe, monitored setting, and approved by the WMC Rehab and Sports PILATES to page 3

news WHITE HOUSE from front barber shop and all are still here. Jann’s sister, Pat Ridout, now owns the jewelry story across the street and sometimes they collaborate, with many surprise marriage proposals made alongside a special dish thanks to the kitchen staff and owners. The atmosphere is ripe with romance anyway with the darkened rooms and candlelight. Perfect for a first date, engagement, anniversary, or just out for a special night with friends. Holidays are always a special time for the White House, which with their remodeling have made a party room for 50 and you can reserve ahead by calling 563-7782291 if you prefer to let them do the cooking for those special occasions. Duane Boyer is the Kuehner’s right hand man and only full time employee, which is important when they have been known to serve up to 500 people over a weekend. Not bad for a small town! They have up to three cooks on weekends just to keep up with their demand. T h e K u e h n e r ’s daughter, Jill Heins, finds time to waitress part time, along with other main servers on weekends are Duane’s sister Joann Boyer and another regular is Missy Elsbernd. By Joyce Meyer One taste of these cupcakes and you might think you died and have gone to Heaven, floating on a fluffy, dreamy, creamy cloud of sweetness! Find out what everybody is raving about at their holiday event Thursday, December 5th from 4 to 7 p.m. at Pinter’s Gardens and Pumpkins at 2475 State Hwy 9 by Decorah. Owners, Shane and Elisa Pinter opened their doors in 2011. This place is so much more than a seasonal garden center or family tourist attraction in the fall. The Bakery at Pinter’s Gardens and Pumpkins serves up some tasty cupcakes that would be great to serve your family for the holidays! Start a new tradition that the family will love! There are so many cupcakes to choose from you won’t know which one to try first, but I bet you will be bringing home some for the family and friends! You can choose from Cookies-n-Cream, my personal favorite Raspberry Burst, Butterfinger, Chocolate Chip, Mint Dream, On the Farm, Peanut Butter Cup, Red Velvet, Lemon Raspberry (another of my favorites), Black Out for those chocoholics, Hot Fudge Sundae, Wuz up Doc, German Chocolate, and the Traditional Wedding Cake. You just have to stop in and try them to know how dreamy, melt in your mouth cupcakes they are. And while you’re there, you may want to stop for lunch. They have mouthwatering sandwiches, paninis, wraps, coffee, delicious homemade fudge, pies, scones, turnovers, cookies, cheesecake, and more with the dining room also available for parties and business luncheons. Menus can be found at http://www.pintersgardensandpumpkins.com Tastes of the Season Open House and Holiday Shopping
Event is a great way to kick off your holiday shopping and get you in the mood for the holidays. Special savings will be awarded at the door as they serve delicious desserts along with an array of appetizers while you shop for holiday décor including wreath stands, wall art, stocking stuffers, wine bottle ornaments, and poinsettias. They also will have gift packages including: fudge, salsas, syrups, ice cream toppings, steak sauce, flavored butters – all packaged up for gift giving! These would make perfect gifts for all those special gifts you need to buy. Even better yet, they have a special offer that is just too sweet to pass up through the whole holiday season. For every $20 spent on holiday gifts, décor and poinsettias, you receive a free cupcake!! So there is no reason why you shouldn’t stop out and try a cupcake or two. The cupcake special does not include lunch or bakery purchases. If a wedding is in the future, and with wedding cupcakes so popular, you may want cupcakes, instead of the traditional wedding cake. Pinter’s displays them on cupcake stands with a 6” cake topper that looks fabulous. They also can provide cheesecakes, pies, and bars for special occasions as well. Their current store and bakery hours are Tues-Sat: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you are in the mood for a sweet treat stop over and try a cupcake and no matter what the celebration may be, they know how to make your special day even more precious! For orders, contact them at 563-382-0010. Bakery, café and gift shop will be open until Dec. 21, then closed (except for large-quantity bakery orders) until April 1, 2014.

Biz Booster Challenge Business Plan Winners MS “Run the US” is putting out a call to athletes to be a part of the second annual fundraising event dedicated to raising MS awareness and finding a cure. Twenty-One coveted spots remain open for this challenging and rewarding opportunity. Running enthusiasts nationwide are invited to be a part of the 2nd Annual MS Run the US Relay slated to begin April 16th, 2014. The relay which will consist of 21 segments, covering approximately 140+ miles and spanning 5-6 days, is currently seeking 21 runners to take part in each leg of this coastto-coast run. Endurance athletes, avid runners and those just looking to be a part of something extraordinary are encouraged to apply and help raise awareness of multiple sclerosis. The inaugural event which ended this past September changed countless lives and raised over $175,000 in donations to support MS research through The National MS Society. Each participant walked away from the event with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and experienced personal growth in ways unimaginable. “It truly is amazing what we can do with a little help, inspiration and love. I believe with my whole heart that I was supposed to find this event and be a part of it!” said Rachel Aldrich, a 2013 Relay runner, who ran 242 miles in 10 days. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS affects approximately 400,000 Americans with 10,000 new cases being reported each year. Symptoms ranging from walking and balance disturbances, to muscle spasticity and cognitive dysfunction, affect each person differently. And as if these degenerative effects were not debilitating enough, the cost of care, which can be estimated at $60,000 per year, is only expected to increase given the current economic state. The MS Run the US 2014 Relay aims to raise money to support multiple sclerosis research, as well as, supporting those living with the disease through disability assistance. Our hope is that a cure
for the disease might one day be found, thereby eliminating both its physical and financial burdens. MS Run the US has partnered with Money Mutual, the major sponsor for this year’s event. They have also partnered with celebrity endorser, Montel Williams‒renowned syndicated talk show host, will be following the relay closely and be involved in multiple events throughout the span of the relay. Montel is a huge supporter of the cause and suffers from MS himself, having been diagnosed back in 1999. Due to this unique sponsorship, 100% of all money raised from the event is donated directly to fund awareness and finding a cure for the disease through The National MS Society. The 2nd Annual 2014 MS Run the US cross country Relay will get underway in Los Angeles in mid-April and will wrap up in New York City five months later. Relay runners will take on a 140+ mile leg of the cross-country journey, where they will run approximately 25 to 35 miles daily over the course of five to six days. A passion for running, personal growth and fundraising being the only requirements for participation. The relay offers interested runners the opportunity to become part of the growing movement to end MS in this challenging and rewarding endurance expedition . Athletes who would like to participate in the 2014 MS Run the US Relay can apply for a coveted Relay Runner spot online at http:// www.msruntheus.com. MS Run the US, Inc. is dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support multiple sclerosis research while inspiring others to get involved in the fight against MS. Founded in 2009 by Wisconsin native Ashley Kumlien of Brookfield, Wisconsin, MS Run the US, Inc. was inspired by her mother, Jill Kumlien, who has lived with MS since 1980. All donation proceeds support research through The National MS Society. For additional information on the company, please visit http:// www.msruntheus.com.

neighbor to neighbor Looking for ideas to make or take to that family or gathering with friends? The following are some ideas for you. A couple of the recipes are old favorites. You can dress those old favorites up to make them fit the holidays. Karen’s Zippy Dip From Karen Larson 1 (8-oz.) cream cheese, softened 1 (8-oz.) carton sour cream 1 package dry taco mix 3 to 5 drops tabasco sauce Ÿ c. taco sauce 1 (8-oz.) package shredded cheddar cheese, divided 1 (8-oz.) package Monterey Jack Cheese or Mexican cheese 1 can refried beans Bag of nacho chips Combine cream cheese and sour cream. Add beans, taco mix, tabasco sauce and taco sauce. Add three-fourths of each cheese, mix and put into a greased-baking dish. Add remainder of cheese to the top. Bake for 30 minutes in 325 degree oven for 30 minutes, until the center is bubbly. Serve with nacho chips. Ham Balls From Zoe Martin 2 lbs. ham loaf 1 pkg. (1 strip) saltine crackers 2 eggs 1 C. milk 1 can crushed pineapple or 1-1 ½ C. pineapple juice 1½ C. brown sugar ½ C. vinegar 1 tsp. ground mustard Mix ham loaf, crackers, eggs and milk. Roll into balls (between golf ball- and baseball-sized). Place in 9x13-inch baking dish. Combine remaining ingredients to make sauce. Pour over ham balls. Bake 1½ hours at 325 degrees. (This is a different version of ham balls. Pineapple and ham are always good together.) Special K Bars 1½ C. peanut butter 1½ C. white syrup 1½ C. white sugar 8-10 C. Rice Krispies or Special K cereal 1 C. butterscotch chips 1 C. chocolate chips
By Sharon Busch stovetop over medium heat until smooth. In a large mixing bowl, pour sauce over Rice Krispies. Stir. Pat mix into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Into a separate microwaveable bowl, pour butterscotch chips and chocolate chips. Microwave for 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Once mix is smooth, pour over Rice Krispies in pan and smooth out. Let cool. (Decorate the top of these favorite bars with colored frosting or decorations to make them special for the holidays.) Microwave Caramel Corn 1 C. un-popped popcorn 1 C. brown sugar 1 stick butter ½ C. light Karo syrup 1 tsp. vanilla Ÿ tsp. baking soda Pop corn and set aside in large brown-paper bag. Mix brown sugar, butter and syrup in microwave. Need to boil in microwave, about 3 minutes. Add vanilla and soda. Stir well. Pour over popped corn and stir well. Microwave the popcorn mixture for 1½ minutes. (Microwave Caramel Corn is something I make every year for Christmas. I add Holiday candy, pretzels and mixed nuts to it. Add your favorites. Serve with small bowls for snacking or package up to make a gift for a teacher, bus driver, babysitter, neighbor or any one you want to share with.) Till next time‌. Here are some holiday tips: Make lists so you can stay organized and make things less stressful. Relax and make your tasks enjoyable. Put on Christmas music while decorating or wrapping gifts. Have a glass of wine or hot chocolate while cooking. Let your guests bring food to round out your meals. Share the cooking burden. Don’t try new and difficult recipes when planning a holiday event. Take tried and true recipes and add a special touch. Add a fruit glaze to meat. Add toasted nuts to a dish.

sp rts By Leah Kruse Warrior wrestling is a way of life for some South Winn residents and when the lights go out on the football field and the last volleyball net is put away, those fans are ready to watch their Warrior grapplers. In 2012-2013, South Winn struggled as a team finishing 5th at the UIC tournament and ending the season 3-4 in UIC duals. In 2013-2014, every wrestler will be giving it all they have every time they step onto the mat. Starting his third year as the Head Coach, Jacob Elsbernd is optimistic about the team but stays realistic too. “We have some experience mixed with some young excitement,” said Elsbernd. “However, we lack in numbers and depth.” Elsbernd’s coaching team is complete again for the third year straight including Head assistant coach Jason Schmelzer, assistant coach Ethan Adams and Kenny Mikota who has been back with the SW wrestling program since Elsbernd took the head position but was the Head Coach at SW for many years. Experience and guidance will come from the seven returning letter winners, three that are seniors and one who placed 5th at state last season. Senior returning letter winners include Chris Brincks- who
placed 5th at State in 2012-2013 at 195# and Ben Unzeitig. Other returning letter winners include Cody Fisher, Ben Meyer, Landers Kuboushek, Ethan Kipp and Ryan Hageman. “This is a great group of kids with a great work ethic and desire to become better each day, but we are inexperienced at some weight classes in the varsity line-up,” continued Elsbernd. Weight assignments can always vary from week to week making it hard to find a solid line-up. Several weights could be filled by more than one wrestler and the fight to earn a weight can be a very tough battle. The SW roster fills in the 14 weight classes in this order: 106Cody Fisher; 113- Luke Massman; 120- Luke Massman, Jacob Ling; 126- Jacob Ling, Alejandro Koenig; 132- Alejandro Koenig, Brett Styve; 138- Ben Unzeitig, Brett Styve; 145- Ben Unzeitig, Lane Schnuelle; 152- Lane Schnuelle, Adam Tollefsrud; 160- Ben Meyer; 170- Ryan Hageman; 182Landers Kuboushek; 195- Chris Brincks, Anthony Emanuel; 220Ethan Kipp, Anthony Emanuel; 285- Ethan Kipp. “Our season depends on kids getting better every day and our team staying healthy and putting a full lineup together,” finished Elsbernd.

By Leah Kruse After a tough 3-18 (2-14 UIC) season last year, the Turkey Valley Trojans are looking to make this season better in more ways than one. Head coach Chris Sullivan (20-25) is back for his third year of Trojan basketball and has been working the team in practice to get the boys ready for the season. “This year, we will have a lot of experience on the court and we will be very physical inside,” Sullivan stated. “We have some good shooters to go along with our inside presence.” With nine returning letter winners, including six seniors, the Trojans will have a strong core to build around. Senior letter winners include: Justin Izer- 1.2 pointsper-game (PPG), 4 total rebounds (TR); Triston Mohlis- 1 PPG, 18 TR; Ryan Busta- 6.7 PPG, 49 TR, 34 assists (A), 18 steals (S); Steven Landa- 2.4 PPG, 98 TR, 18 A, 13 S; Riley Busta- 4.6 PPG, 30 TR, 6 A, 12 S; Riley Buchheit- 6.3 PPG, 149 TR, 10 A, 25 S and juniors: Ryan Izer- 2.4 PPG, 45 TR, 9 A, 12 S; Nathan Suell; 16 TR, 1 A, 4 S; Justin Hackman- 3.8 PPG, 22 TR, 4 A, 11 S. “We will have good depth this year and be able to put full court pressure on teams and hopefully that will lead to some easy baskets for us,” Sullivan continued. Filling in the rest of the varsity roster are juniors Blake Busta, Eric Drilling, Kyle Balik, Seth Jencks, Ethan Throndson and C.J. Eichenberger. “We want to put a lot more shots up this year compared to the previous season. Our team weaknesses this year will be our ball handling. We will need some kids to step up this year and take care of the ball and get everybody in the correct spot on the floor,” Sullivan said. “We will need to find that go-to guy this year at the end of games.” “The conference will be very competitive this year. I believe we will be in the middle of the pack and it’s going to be a year where you need to bring your best effort every night if you want to come away with a victory,” finished Sullivan.

sports By Leah Kruse The Warriors basketball team should finish their ’13-’14 season with a better record than what they finished with last season. With a 9-12 overall record and an 8-7 UIC record, South Winn will be fighting for every point and every win. South Winn has a strong base to build on with seven returning letter winners, five of which led last year’s team in at least one area of stats. Senior leadership will play a large part in this season’s squad as well. Chris Streeter is back on the bench for his second year as the Head Coach with Joel Hageman as his assistant. “2012-2013 was definitely a learning year for us. We got good experience in a new program,” Streeter stated. “An opposing coach did make the comment that he felt we were the most improved team from before Christmas until after.” Returning to the varsity team for their last season as Warriors are senior letter winners: Trevor Schweinefus- 1st team All-UIC, led team in points- 303 and in rebounds- 138; Adam Lensing- led team in FG%- 52.3 and blocks- 55; Andre Walz- led team in FT%- 75; Garrett Bohach- led team in 3pt%43.3; Jared Schroder and Brian Kleppe. Lone junior returning letter winner is Jordan Rommes- led team in steals- 45. “Our season depends on us coming together and playing as a team. Flowing together offensively and defensively,” continued Streeter. Completing the rest of the roster are juniors Christian Kleve, Tyler Numedahl and Tanner Kuennen and sophomores Logan Schweinefus, Mitchell Herold and Treyton Jacobsen. “I am looking forward to a fun year. I have some great athletes that work hard and are willing to learn. That is all a coach can ask for,” Streeter finished.

By Leah Kruse After finishing the 2012-2013 season with an overall record of 25-10, this year’s squad is ready to have a better season. Back to lead the team this season is Head Coach Steve Andrukaitis who is starting his 4th year at Turkey Valley. Andrukaitis will be assisted by Mark Langreck, Dennis Merick and Kurt Klimesh. Turkey Valley finished 2nd at last season’s UIC tournament and would like to move into the champion spot at this year’s tournament. With 12 returning letter winners, six returning district qualifiers and one state qualifier, the Trojans have a tremendous amount of experience to build upon. “The team returns a lot of last year’s team that qualified for, but lost, the Regional Dual Finals against Sumner-Fredericksburg,” stated Andrukaitis. “We have high expectations for the team coming into this season.” Returning wrestlers from last year’s team with this year’s weight classes include: Tom Reicks- 120, returning letter winner (RLW) and returning district qualifiers (RDQ); Travis Reicks- 132, RLW; Eric Buckendahl, senior-145, RLW; Riley Meirick, senior152, RLW, RDQ; Nick Meirick, senior- 152, RLW; Justin Kime160 (’12-’13), RLW; Charles Hadacek, senior- 160, RLW, RDQ; Tyler Sawyer- 170, RLW, RDQ; Levi Klimesh- 182, RLW, RDQ; Ben Wilkerson- 195, RLW; Kyle Reicks, senior- 220, RLW; Luke Kuennen, senior- 285, RLW, RDQ, returning state qualifier. During the next two weeks South Winneshiek Elementary/ Middle School students will be learning about caring for others by participating in this fundraiser. The preschool through 8th grade students are asked to donate their pennies, spare change, or any amount to assist us in this fund raising event. All proceeds fund the following programs in the state of Iowa: research, patient and family support groups, patient aid and education. If you want to make a tax-deductible donation you can do so by writing a check to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Wednesdays will be “Theme Days” for Pennies for Patients. If your child brings $1.00 or more for Pennies For Patients on a Wednesday, he or she will be able to wear the following to school. As a reward, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society donates a pizza and pop party to class that donates the most money. The kids always enjoy this! Unfortunately almost everyone knows of someone who has been affected by some sort of cancer so please encourage your child to be a generous, caring citizen by helping the boys and girls affected by these diseases. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 FLOWER POT from page 5 Maryville Street. Previously a florist shop, it has some appealing features like the walk in refrigerator, consistent traffic, and the overall layout of the building. Audrey expressed that she is very much a small business promoter and is excited for the opportunity to contribute to the area. She is also, “very much looking forward to getting to know the Calmar community.” The Flower Pot took part in Small Business Saturday last week by providing refreshments, sale prices, and door prizes. They are also participating in Christmas in Calmar on December 5th with welcoming cheer. The Flower Pot has the ability to make local deliveries as well as worldwide. To place an order, call the shop at (478) 231-9682, or visit their website, www.theflowerpotcalmar.com. Audrey wants to know what the people of Calmar and the surrounding area want out of a florist shop. She says you can let her know your suggestions and requests by calling the number
above, messaging her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/theflowerpotcalmar, or stopping in the shop.

It was only eleven degrees outside early Black Friday morning. The beautiful sunrise on Calmar's Prairie Farmer Trail just off of Highway 52 promised a sunny, but cold day for shoppers. (Photo by Joyce Meyer)
