TOP 10 REASONS TO THINK LOCAL, BUY LOCAL, BE LOCAL 1. Buy Local Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. These include case studies showing that locally-owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base. 2. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250 percent more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. 3. Keep our community unique: Where we shop,
where we eat and have all all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just any place,” says Richard Moe, President of National Historic Preservation Trust. 4. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing to less sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. 5. Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally

and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. 6. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. 7. Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.
T
9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. 10. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

he Windsor Theatre was 100 years old in 2013. Built in 1913 as a meeting place for the Knights of Pythias and as a venue for traveling road shows, the building has been used over the years primarily to show movies. The movies are sponsored by Hampton Kiwanis and PROSPER. December’s Hoe Down is Monday, December 2nd from 6-9pm. December’s Sing Along Sunday, December 8th at 4pm. The Chamber/Main Street $10,000 raffle drawing is Monday, December 9th at 5:30pm followed by a Sing Along. Thank you for your continued patronage and support of the Windsor Theatre! The Windsor Theatre is governed by a board of directors. The board is faced with the challenge of maintaining a 100 year old building. There are structural issues that need to be addressed. A new gutter system has been recently installed to eliminate water infiltration issues that
Also on the “list of things to do” is the renovation of the south basement into a conference/meeting room and the restoration of the stage area. The stage restoration includes a movable movie screen, installing heating and air conditioning, and construction of a bathroom, makeup room, changing rooms, and green room. The Windsor board has met with an architect from Des Moines to begin the planning of this major project. The board continues to seek grants and donations.

arol’s Flower Box has been open for over three years now, and I am very pleased with all of the support Hampton and the surrounding area has given me as a small business. I feel as a retailer we have a lot to offer this area. We carry fresh flower bouquets and plants as well as pre-made or custom silk flowers and arrangements. But that’s not all... we also have memorial stones, wind chimes, home decor, Colonial candles, candy bouquets, and jewelry. I enjoy redoing and adding new things to my shop, which in turn keeps everyone wondering, “what’s next? We now offer a line of dips, soups, cheese cakes and jellies that are mmmm good, plus Santa Maria Wine out of Carroll, Iowa.
And for those formal occasions we have a good selection of Tuxedoes at an affordable price. The list goes on and on! The shop is beautiful this time of year and full of gift ideas. We would love to help you fill someone’s wish list, make a fruit or gift basket or make a wish list of your own! So come in, enjoy the atmosphere and let us fill some of your holiday needs. Remember, Poinsettias’ will be in soon so order early for the holidays. We also deliver to Hampton, Latimer, Coulter, Hansell, Dumont, Chapin, & Sheffield. Thank you for all of your support over the last year! Have a blessed holiday season! CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVING Spreading cheer and appreciation with your holiday gifts Holiday gift-giving is a custom filled with noble intentions that sometimes has the unintended effect of sapping the cheer from shoppers. At Christmastime we set out to choose gifts that show our affection or appreciation, but the process of knowing who should be on our gift list and what to get them can create stress. It doesn't have to be that way. Keep the holiday cheer in your gift-giving with these simple tips. Gifts for Family and Close Friends You know who the people are on this list,
make a much greater impact than if you merely select a gift to "keep things even. On the other hand, you should pay attention to your expenditure for several reasons. First, you don't want to spend so much on a gift that the recipient will feel uncomfortable. Additionally, you don't want to give a gift that looks like it came out of the bargain bin, with no thought paid to the recipient's interests. Finally, you shouldn't spend over your budget, because nothing takes the cheer out of the holidays than the prospect of facing unmanageable debt in January.
and you usually know what is customary. In some families everyone exchanges gifts with one another. In other families they only give to the children. In some cases gifts are exchanged between households instead of individuals. With your friends, you usually know what's customary as well. appropriate employee bonus or incentive is not easy. Buying something for someone you don’t know very well but buy for every year, like your postal carrier or a business associate, can be difficult. We’ve got a suggestion that would work for everyone. Buy Chamber Bucks. They come in $5, $10 and $20 denominations and they are a check for use at over 200 businesses and locations in Greater Franklin County. They are good for 60 days and are a wonderful gift and employee incentive or bonus. Chamber Bucks can be used at any Chamber business like dining and fast food restaurants, hotel, motel and bed and breakfast locations, gas stations, grocery store, electric companies, retail stores, churches and nonprofit organizations to name a few. November 10, First National Bank purchased Chamber Bucks and sold them for a 10% discount and was sold out in less than two hours. Dave Heuberger, President of First National Bank states, “We want people to shop local, dine local and bank local. The benefit of doing so helps the entire community! Over $50,000 in Chamber Bucks are sold annually. Buy local this year and support your Chamber members. Chamber businesses are committed to the community and the people they serve. Anyone can purchase Chamber Bucks so why not stop in at the Chamber and pick up some Chamber Bucks for gifts for family, friends, neighbors and employees? It is the gift that keeps on giving! Happy Holidays!
