New Vision Ministry calls pastor Two local churches have a new pastor for their newly-formed joint parish. Reverend Lynn Noel has been called as the pastor for New Vision Ministry, a position he assumed on November 1. This is a shared ministry with St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lakota, and Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Noel grew up on a farm in Greene, IA, graduating from Greene High School in 1982. Following graduation, he helped his parents on the family farm and was partnered with

his brother, Larry, in a swine operation, which led him into full-time swine management until 1995. Later, he managed a swine operation in Humboldt County. Feeling a call to serve in the church, in 2001, he registered for the Western Iowa Synod Lay School of Ministry. After completion of the lay school, he decided it was time to make a career change, in which he had the opportunity to preach and provide pastoral care, serving the congregation of St. Paul Lutheran

Church in Renwick. In 2007, he graduated from Waldorf College, and from there, he attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque – commuting weekly from Renwick to Dubuque for five years (400 miles round trip). Noel was ordained in the ministry on Sunday, October 20 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Reverend Noel and his wife, Jane, are residing in the parsonage in Thompson.

New Alliant plan continues many popular programs Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility customers will benefit from the company’s latest effort to increase energy efficiency in the state. This five-year plan, approved last week by the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), follows more than 20 years of industry-leading energy efficiency programs for Alliant Energy customers. More than $400 million dollars will be invested in energy efficiency over the next five years, which is similar to the investment made in the current plan that ends December 31. The new plan launches January 1, 2014. “We have been helping customers increase energy efficiency for decades. It’s the right thing to do for the environment and our customers,

said Tom Aller, President of Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility company. “We appreciate the collaboration that took place between Alliant Energy and the other parties involved with the process to create the strong and cost-effective energy efficiency plan approved by the IUB. The plan includes the most popular energy efficiency programs from past plans, including home energy audits and insulation rebates, heating and cooling program offerings, new construction programs and commercial and industrial custom rebates. Items added to the plan are expanded energy-use assessment options, increased LED lighting options for homes, businesses and farms, as well

as new rebate opportunities for small businesses. The full list of programs will be posted at alliantenergy.com by January 2, 2014. The company files an updated energy efficiency plan every five years. Since just 1999, these plans have helped customers save more than 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, which is equivalent to the annual electric usage for nearly

170,000 Iowa homes. In addition, Alliant Energy has also helped customers save enough natural gas to power more than 19,000 Iowa homes for a year. The energy efficiency plan is part of Alliant Energy’s overall efforts to reduce environmental impacts from energy generation, while also managing customer cost and providing reliable service.

Applications for Conservation Stewardship Program due Jan. 17 USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting applications at local field offices for the 2014 Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) signup. Iowa farmers who apply by Jan. 17, 2014, will receive first consideration for funding selections. CSP is offered through a continuous signup, but NRCS periodically makes funding selections. Last year, Iowa NRCS obligated more than $3.8 million through 381 contracts covering 175,346 acres. The program emphasizes conservation performance — producers earn higher payments for higher performance. Through CSP, producers install conservation enhancements to make positive changes in soil health, soil erosion, water quality, water quantity, air quality, plant resources, animal resources and energy. CSP also supports the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy through

various enhancement options. The Iowa strategy includes practices designed to reduce nutrient loads from nonpoint sources, such as farm fields. Some popular nutrient reduction enhancements used by Iowa farmers include: • Cover crops to scavenge residual nitrogen; • Precision application technology to apply nutrients; • Split nitrogen application (50% after crop emergence or pasture green-up); • Plant tissue tests and analysis to improve nitrogen management. A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if the program is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, stewardship threshold requirements and payment types. Learn more about CSP by visiting the Iowa NRCS website or your local NRCS field office.

Physical Education classes are busy at North Iowa High School as they are taking Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) under the direction of School Nurse Deb Aukes, RN. 30 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 8, 1983 School children at BCR are the beneficiaries of new pieces of playground equipment installed last fall. The equipment was provided by the Board of Education and marks the first additions in recent years. The Tribune area received records of the snowfall during the month of November. A total of 17 inches of snow fell. 40 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 12, 1973 Registering continues today for the Buffalo Center’s Pre-Christmas activities. Two winners of $25.00 each were Alvin Walters and Mrs. Jake Wessels. The Buffalo Center Bison defeated the Forest City Indians with a score of 44-33. The two high scorers were Cory Doden with 13 points and David Johnson with 16. Several Buffalo Center young men have been declared charter members of the Buffalo Center Boxing Club. Trainer and coach is Harvey Rossmiller who once was a boxer himself. All practice sessions are worked out after school hours. 50 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 12, 1963 Pastor Avery Wetzig of the First Congregation Church here urged residents to remember the service of special meetings conducted nightly. The speaker, Vernon Duerksen, is both a speaker and musician and comes here from Nebraska. During these trying times, we must turn to God and seek His divine revelations and guidance.

It’s so hard to believe it’s already December with this lovely weather we are having. The residents and I are having a hoot of a week putting up Christmas trees. They are so beautiful. Now, all we need is a white Christmas. It’s definitely going to be a fun, busy month here at TMNH. Sunday morning, we listened and watched Peace and Power. Reverend Peake, from First Reformed in Buffalo Center, came in and led our Sunday worship services. Thank you, Reverend Peake. For our evening program, we watched 60 Minutes. To start our Monday off, we had Residents Council. For my morning sensory teasers, we watched A Festival of Lights; we entered a world of Holiday magic, where hundreds of thousands of colored lights, animated fantasy displays and unique attractions of all kinds created a winter wonderland. Today, we put up and decorated one of our many Christmas trees. Monica played Plinko

The Winnebago County Conservation Board reminds people that Thorpe Park, located five miles west of Forest City, will be closed to all traffic during the two shotgun deer seasons. Those seasons run from December 7-11 and from December 14-22. There will continue to be access to the park office and the shop building throughout the period, though. Shotgun deer hunting is not allowed in Thorpe Park, but the Thorpe Recreation Area, to the southeast, and the Russ Wildlife Area, to the west, are open to hunting. As a result, Thorpe Park is closed each year during the shotgun deer seasons for safety purposes. The park’s gates will be closed, and no foot or motorized traffic will be allowed into the park. The Lake Catherine Cabin will also be closed down during this time. For more information, contact WCCB Director Robert Schwartz at 641-565-3390 or at rschwartz@ winnebagoccb.com

Ice safety reminder as Iowa lakes freeze over Ice fishing season is upon us, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers the following advice to help people stay safe on the ice this winter. • There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice. • The Iowa DNR recommends a minimum of four inches of quality ice for fishing and at least five inches for snowmobiles and ATVs. • Ice thickness is not uniform on any body of water. Things like current and springs slow ice growth. Rocks, trees or docks that poke through the ice likely will conduct heat and make the ice around it less stable. • There could be pockets of thin ice or places where ice recently

formed, so it would be wise to check ice thickness as you go out. • The insulating effect of snow slows down the freezing process. • Safety items in the bucket: Ice picks, about 50 feet of rope and a throwable floatation seat cushion for use in case of rescue. • Ice fishing is a social activity, don’t go out alone. If the worst should happen, someone would be there to call for help or to rescue. • Avoid off-colored snow or ice. It is usually a sign of weakness. • Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t look right, stay off.

Aerators in use on county public areas Users of area fishing ponds should be aware that the Winnebago County Conservation Board has turned on aerators at Thorpe Park’s Lake Catherine (west of Forest City), the north pond of the Ambroson Recreation Area (south of Leland), and the Florence Recreation Area (west of Thompson). The aerators will remain in operation until spring. The aerators will create open water conditions and weak ice. People

should not attempt to approach the open water near an aerator. For your safety, be sure to check the ice conditions before you venture away from the shoreline. It’s also a good idea, if you are going out on the ice, to go with a friend. When venturing out on the ice, remember that two inches of clear, solid ice is usually safe for one person walking, but four inches is required for ice fishing. Five inches

Kris Colby was among 47 County Recorders and three Deputy Recorders who were honored in Des Moines recently for completing the Iowa County Recorder Certification program.

County Recorder earns certification Winnebago County Recorder Kris Colby was recently honored for completing a new certification program for Iowa County Recorders and Deputy Recorders. The Iowa County Recorders Association recognized the first graduating class of the program at a ceremony held on Friday, Nov. 15. The graduation event occurred in conjunction with the ISAC Fall School of Instruction in Des Moines. Forty-seven Recorders and three Deputy Recorders received certificates and pins for com-

pleting the program. The Iowa County Recorder Certification program provides Iowa County Recorders and Deputy Recorders with the opportunity to learn how to effectively and professionally fulfill their elected duties and to better serve their communities. It was created by the Iowa County Recorders Association with the assistance of personnel from the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office. Participants in the program must complete 30 credit hours

of training, including 21 core credits and nine elective credits. The areas covered in the program are Leadership and Ethics, Open Meetings and Open Records, Communications, Human Resources and Office Management, the Iowa Code, Technology Applications, and Local Government and Budgets. County Recorders and Deputy Recorders who become certified must complete continuing education classes to retain their certification.

St. Patrick’s annual cookie walk attracted a crowd on Saturday, Dec. 7, at a new location, the Heritage Town Center. The weather was chilly, but hundreds of cookies along with coffee and cider helped warm everyone up. All the ladies of St Patrick’s are asked to bake twelve dozen Christmas cookies, so there is a large variety plus some candies and breads.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Conditions are sure to improve after the cold front arrives. Lake Catherine There were a few anglers out last week but no reports on success. Ice thickness is probably around 3-4 inches. Clear Lake A few anglers have ventured out late last week near Farmer’s Beach on the south shore. They were picking up some yellow bass with a few crappies. Bison off to 2-1 start

The North Iowa Bison lost their opening game of the basketball season but came back to pick up two wins last week. The season opened Monday, Dec. 2 at West Bend, where there Bison fell 43-60 after a sluggish start. Tate Corporon led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Taylor Ostermann with eight points. Corporon had 11 rebounds, and Josh Mathahs totaled four. Corporon also had six blocks. “The whole team started out tight, said Bison Head Coach Chad Hinders. “For most, this was their first start, and for some, it was their first taste of varsity basketball play. Our inexperience showed, as we struggled against the Wolverines in the first half. We lacked the confidence needed to execute the offense, and when we ran into difficulty, we tried to create things individually and only made matters worse. Scoring seven and four points in the first two quarters usually does not translate into a lot of good fortune in a half of basketball. “At halftime, we talked things over, and during the second half, we started to work as a more cohesive unit, said Hinders. “Defensively and offensively, things looked a lot better, and the goal that was set forth in the locker room to win the half was met. We ended up losing the contest 60-43 but gained valuable experience and a chance to go over some basketball situations with the players. “West Bend-Mallard returned a lot of experience and athleticism from last year’s squad, added Coach Hinders. “The Zinnel twins, Jordan Buhs, and an inside presence with Cole Banwart created some matchup issues. West Bend 21 13 10 16 60 North Iowa 7 4 16 16 43 It was a different story the next night, Tuesday, Dec. 3, as the Bison blew past the Panthers of CWL in the first half of their match in Buffalo Center. The Panthers had a good fourth quarter, but the Bison were the victors, 47-32. “The Panthers sunk into a 2-3 zone, and we had problems hitting shots consistently. CWL was able to score three early buckets, but then our defense started to cover people better and get back in transition, said Coach Hinders. “Over the course of the rest of the first, second and third quarters, our defense allowed just eight more points, including shutting the Panthers out in the third quarter. “Offensively, the second quarter really solidified the half. We had good ball movement, communicated well, and found openings in their zone for open looks. The important thing was we were able to make some outside shots, which opened up the inside game. The Bison opened the fourth quarter with their largest lead of the night at 27 points. “The Panthers kept clawing away, and to their credit, they kept playing and found ways to string baskets together and shrink our lead to 15 points, said Hinders. North Iowa had a more balanced night for scoring, with three players reaching double figures. Dylan Voortmann led the effort with 14 points, followed by Trevor Aukes with 11 and Corporon with 10. Corporon had 13 rebounds, followed

by Mathahs with six and Aukes and Ostermann with five each. Corporon had four blocks, and Aukes had three steals. North Iowa 17 14 10 6 47 CWL 8 6 0 18 32 The Bison traveled to Armstrong for their final game of the week against North Union on Friday, Dec. 6, where they prevailed 69-61. Derek Yegge was the top point earner for the Bison with 23, followed by Corporon with 11 and Voortmann and Aukes with 10 each. Corporon had 11 rebounds, followed by Voortmann with six and Mathahs and Austin Paden with five apiece. Aukes and Yegge each had three steals. “We connected on a couple three pointers and others that were real close to being threes to build an early lead, said Hinders. “The Warriors called time out to regroup, and they found some life, as they roared back to take the lead by the end of the quarter. We outscored them in the second quarter to take a six point lead into the break. “Defensively, we came out in the third quarter and held North Union scoreless over the first three minutes while building a ten point lead, said Hinders. “A turning point in the game was when Tate picked up two fouls midway through the third quarter. Dylan also picked up his fourth closely after, and as those two sat, the Warriors whittled away at our lead. “With three minutes left, North Union had pulled to within one point, and Tate had fouled out of the game, explained the coach. “Previously, we had not been getting to the free-throw line at all; on this night, we missed 21 free-throws. Fortunately, down the stretch, the freethrows fell, and we were able to win this ball game, 69-61. “We are looking for a little more continuity as we enter into this week’s games and the start of the NIC Conference tilt, said Hinders. “We need to get people healthy, regroup, and get on the same page. We are still searching for the right combination of players that play together and complement each other. We have a good nucleus of people. We just need to get the experience of working together and getting to know the finer details of the offense and defense in game situations. This week will certainly test that, as we face Lake Mills and Forest City. These two games will definitely show us where we are at early in the year and the steps we will need to take to get better to compete against all the quality teams we will face over the course of the season. North Iowa 16 19 14 20 69 North Union 18 11 14 18 61 JV boys The JV boys opened their basketball season at home on Tuesday, Dec. 3, with a 45-7 win over CWL. Drew Jensen was the top scorer with 12 points, followed by Sam Hassebroek with nine and Steven Milbrandt and Freddie Eden contributing seven points each. The Bison traveled to Armstrong on Friday, Dec. 6, where they defeated North Union, 42-18. Leading scorer was Austin Haisman with 17 points, followed by Eden with eight and Logan Eichenberger and Alex Balvance with five each. Eichenberger also had six assists.

Ladies nab first win The Lady Bison picked up their first win of the basketball season last Monday, Dec. 2, as they took down West Bend-Mallard 59-42 on the Wolverines’ home turf. Paige Hassebroek and Rachel Boekelman were the top two scorers in the game, as they put up 19 and 17 points, respectively. Hassebroek has 12 rebounds, followed by Krista Hovland with seven and Jenna Koppen and Rebecca Murray with five each. Boekelman had eight steals, Hovland had five, and Mica Johnson had four. Head Coach Rob Riedinger says this was a much needed win for the Lady Bison. “After a sluggish first half, we played an excellent second half of basketball – controlling the game with a solid defensive effort Parts Plus 0 4 Highs Posted: team game, K & H Coop Oil (477), team series, K & H Coop Oil (1378), ind. game, Rene Graves (180), ind. series, Sheri Boyken (513)

and sound team play, said Riedinger. “Paige was again a force inside and outside, scoring 12 of her 19 in the third quarter and crashing the boards all night. Rachel had an outstanding game also, scoring 17 with three 3-point baskets and causing havoc on the defensive end. I was also pleased with the effort and contribution from Becca and Krista. Riedinger says there is room for improvement, however. “We were a dismal 7/18 from the free throw line and allowed West Bend too many opportunities off our turnovers, noted Riedinger. “It was a good win, but there is much work to be done yet before conference play begins on Tuesday against Lake Mills. North Iowa 10 15 22 12 59 West Bend 7 14 12 9 42 JV girls The JV girls are off to a slow start, after dropping their first two games of the basketball season. The girls played their very first game at Northwood-Kensett on November 22, where they did well in the first quarter before slowing down in the second. The Vikings led the Lady Bison 23-11 at the half. Coach Levi Judge says the girls calmed down in the second half and began to compete, but they fell short in a 34-24 loss. Scorers for North Iowa were Kendall Melz with 12 points, followed by Taylen Hinders six, Danielle Yegge four and Rachel Hassebroek two. The ladies made eight field goals and were 8/20 from the free-throw line. The JV squad hosted its first home game on November 26, as they lost to North Union 38-26 in a long and physical game. “Our young teamed played much better, said

Coach Judge. “We had more players score, which is always good to see. I strongly believe that once we all become more comfortable with the speed of the game and more familiar with our offense, we will start to win. Yegge was the top scorer for the Lady Bison with seven points, followed by Melz and Hinders with six each, Ivey Greensky four, Hassebroek two and Brooke Hovland one. North Iowa made eight field goals and shot 10/25 from the free-throw line.
