Newcomers expected to make an impact The Bulldogs were 29-18 winners over Glidden-Ralston in the Jamboree game that kicked off the 2013-14 basketball season. They opened regular play Monday, Dec. 2 against Southeast Webster-Grand. The scrimmage of sorts at Madrid does not count as a regular game, and that is just fine for Ogden Coach Dave Morris who at this time is trying to build team chemistry. “We have to get used to playing the tempo we want to play,” says Morris. “We’ll be making a lot of adjustments in the beginning until we can find who we are. I expect us to make huge strides each week before Christmas break.” Although the team lost four players to graduation, they return eight letter winners: Grant Heineman, Cayce Good, Jake West, Jared Adreon, Owen Haberer, Blake Price, Derek Reutter and Bryce Snedden. “Cayce will have the ball in his hands directing traffic, but not as a labeled point guard,” says Morris. The coach talks about new faces from last year and how they should be able to contribute. That includes a couple of seniors who decided to go back out. There were also a few guys seriously injured last year who Morris feels will be in the mix. On the defensive end of the floor, expect to see 6’4” senior Grant Heineman making his presence known. “Grant is a worker,” says his coach. “He has a knack for finding the basketball on rebounds. He has really improved in a lot of areas and should do some good things for us.” This is saying a lot for a player who nearly averaged a doubledouble (double digits in both rebounding and scoring) as a junior. Jake West, who earned his way into the starting lineup last year is expected to be a key defender for the Bulldogs. Guards Jared Adreon and Kolton Christle will help fill up the stat sheet. Because of their athleticism Coach Morris says he’ll have Haberer and Luke West playing various roles, and

THE OGDEN REPORTER

Derek Reutter with his “solid body” may be asked to back up Heineman. Morris will also have the flexibility of playing Snedden in multiple positions. Topping off a big list of newcomers is senior Caleb Frye. According to Morris, Frye should be able to step in and help out right away. Chase Crosier moved in from Nebraska and has some skills that will help them on the floor also. “I think we have a lot of players who can contribute in the long run,” states Morris. We have some other kids right on the bubble to the ones mentioned earlier.” Ogden is one of ten schools in the West Central Activities Conference. With many of the competing teams putting in extra work over the summer, Morris says he can name four teams that will be tough. “Des Moines Christian is a pretty dominant basketball school and Van Meter has had the same nucleus of players the last three years. Earlham has played a lot over the summer in AAU tournaments and returns a first team all-conference sophomore. And Panorama is deep with athletes. The extra work these four teams have been putting in will probably show.” The Bulldogs lost to South Hamilton last year in the tournament ending their season at 11-11. “It was a tough game,” says Morris, “and I know we weren’t quite ready for our season to be over, but it happened.” Morris is in his eighth season as head coach here. Assisting Morris is Caprice Burton. Meet the team: Seniors Chase Crosier, Caleb Frye, Grant Heineman, Jared Adreon, Kolton Christle, Jon Thompson. Juniors Cayce Good, Luke West, Jake West, Blake Price, Owen Haberer. Sophomores Bryce Snedden, Derek Reutter.

“The guys all played hard and with style change, that’s a very important thing to build on,” said Bulldog Coach Dave Morris following Ogden’s scrimmage with Glidden-Ralston Monday, Nov. 25. “We are asking a lot of guys to adapt to some things and as that becomes more second nature we will get better.” TOP PHOTO: Luke West puts up a shot. Gigglin’ Goat Gigglin’ Goat Looking ahead to the new season Restaurant Restaurant Leading the Lady Bulldogs this year are seniors, from left, Jordan Poock, Ashton Summerhays, Mallory Melchert, Audra Burt and Mikayla Wenger.

The Bulldogs lost just one girl from last year but she was a critical cog in Coach Lanny Stumbo’s team. However, he knows several girls have worked hard over the past year. This should help them step up and fill the role. “Maddie Diggs was a good leader and she will be missed,” said Stumbo. “She and Audra Burt were our two leading scorers last year, but I feel we will now have more balanced scoring. I am hoping everyone rises to their potential, making it difficult for the coaching staff to decide on which five will start. That will mean we have solid players coming off the bench to complement whoever starts.” Returning letter winners

include Jordan Poock, Burt, Mallory Melchert, Ashton Summerhays, Mikayla Wenger, Abbey Gustafson, Liz Good, Jackie Lawler, Bailey Carson and Anna Langel. Most of Ogden’s inside game will be handled by Melchert, Gustafson, Summerhays and Burt. Stumbo says all four need to be stronger on the boards. “We were a very poor rebounding team last year and a big part of our success this year will be determined by how well those ladies improve in that area.” He is confident they will up those numbers as well as show improvement in their overall defensive play. With another year of maturity,

upperclassmen Lawler, Wenger and Carson are expected to be strong contributors. As a freshman Anna Langel didn’t get to see a lot of court time early on but Stumbo says she came along strong in the last half of the season. In the regular season finale against stateranked Panorama, Langel had a 15 point 4 rebound performance, and claimed the school record for most points in a game by a freshman. She is currently the only sophomore on the squad. According to Stumbo, it is still too early to determine how his group of freshmen will fit into the varsity picture. “They are a fine group and I have been impressed with their

work ethic, so we are looking forward to seeing them develop. They appear to be very coachable and willing to learn.” All eight will be tested in the junior varsity contests in preparation for varsity competition down the road. How do the Bulldogs match up with conference opponents: “Size-wise we match up fairly well with most of the teams in our conference,” says the Bulldog coach. “Des Moines Christian and Panorama both have size advantages in the post area, but we are close enough in height that we should be able to overcome that with good defensive position and determination.” Panorama is expected to be

strong as they return a first-team all-state player and two other starters from a state tournament team. Stumbo feels that Des Moines Christian, Van Meter and Earlham (another state tournament team from last year) all return solid players. Just down the road is Woodward-Granger who although lost some good players, is sure to bounce back as they are consistently a good team. Two seasons ago the Bulldogs had only four wins to 18 losses. They were much improved last year and increased their number

Girls basketball, continued from page five of conference wins by six, then went on to win a first round tournament game against South Hamilton. “This is a great group of girls and as coaches, we hope we can develop a fine ball club that is fun to watch,” says Stumbo who has been with the Ogden program for 14 years. He is assisted by Kent Porter. Ogden opened with a convincing win over Southeast Webster-Grand last Monday night. Hoping a balanced squad will help at tourney time Seven seniors will anchor a Bulldog wrestling squad that returns three state qualifiers in Kyler Kiner, Kolby Munson and Austin Lentz. Of the 21 wrestlers out this year, three are juniors and five sophomores. The six freshmen are all anxious to be part of the successful wrestling program built by head coach Brian Reimers. With those numbers he hopes to fill every weight class except 220 and 285 lbs. “I believe we will be very competitive once everyone gets to his weight class,” says Reimers. “I think we can make a little noise down the tournament trail. Hopefully Ogden will have a chance to wrestle in the state dual championships. I really think we have the balance to do so, but we’ll see what the early part of the spring brings.” Ogden lost Brady Wheelock, Austin Elliott, Logan Savits and Ian Soder to graduation but newcomers Zach McCloud, Trent Ganoe and Austin Flynn should help make the team solid, and according to the coach, could figure into the tournament trail success. The Bulldogs hosted Van Meter and Greene County Tuesday, Dec. 3 to kick off their season. They competed in the Manson Tournament last Saturday. (See the full schedule included in the winter sports tab.) They will follow predominately the same schedule as last year with the exception of some

tournaments that will take them southeast where the competition is relatively unknown. Within the conference, Reiemers says Guthrie Center and Panorama are “always pretty darn tough teams,” but he looks for Ogden to challenge them. Meet the team: Seniors Henry Haglund*, 2013 district qualifier Shawn Heaning* Kyler Kiner*, 3 time state qualifier and place winner Austin McCloud*, district qualifier Kolby Munson*, 2 time state qualifier Aaron Nigro Trevor Wheelock*
