That tradition is expected to continue as the 2013-14 season begins this December for the Titans. “We look again to build off the successes we had last season,” said head coach Lance Schultz, who enters his 21st season as
a head varsity wrestling coach (including the last 17 seasons in the SCC school districts). “We had 34 dual wins, a state team dual ranking (11th 2A), several tournament titles, and a conference dual and tournament championship. “We have six individuals with district experience and one with state experience along with 14 who have either won a tournament or were in the finals,
who all look to improve,” added Schultz. “We again have over 30 guys in the room so competition for a varsity spot week in-andweek-out will help us improve as the season progresses. Many of our wrestlers have been in this program for over nine years now and have had great success through our little kids program and at AAU state tournaments.” Among the top returning wrestlers for
this year’s program including the Titans lone returning state qualifier Rylan Richardson. He finished 45-13 as a freshman last season and was 1-2 at the state tournament at 182 pounds. Also returning for SCC as district qualifiers from the 201213 campaign include seniors Tyler Kutz and Aron King and junior Zayne Barrett. Kutz was 48-8 a season ago
with 29 pins while Aron King was 22-4 with 11 pins a season ago. Barrett finished 31-11 in 2012-13 with 16 pins. Both Cody Schoop, a senior this winter, and junior Logan Peed were district qualifiers during the 2011-12 season returning to the Titans line-up this winter.

Photo by Doug Dornath. By Doug Dornath South Central Calhoun head boys varsity basketball coach Clive Clark knows he will have some big shoes to fill this season on the court. The Titans will have to replace three of the team’s top six players from last season’s 1012 squad. Those three players combined for 31 points per game as Nathan Christensen, Ben Clark and Andrew Van Hulzen graduated in the spring of 2013. Among the teams returning letterwinners on this year’s squad include returning starters Ryan Daisy, Jace Neubaum and Jake Petzenhauser. Daisy, a 6-foot-3 junior, averaged 6.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game for the Titans as a sophomore. Petzenhauser, the top returning scorer at guard
for the Titans this season as a senior, averaged 12.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He was a third-team allTwin Lakes Conference player for the Titans despite playing in only half of the games last season. Neubaum, a 6-foot senior guard, averaged 5.1 points per outing and 2.1 rebounds per contest. Coach Clark believes many of the other players returning are going to have to step up and contribute immediately. “We need help both inside and outside from our returning letterwinners,” said Clark. Among the returning letterwinners for this years squad include seniors Trevor Bounds, Anthony Handlos and Sam Spencer, juniors John Curran and
Zach Ludwig, and sophomore Derrick Henkenius. Handlos, a 5-11 forward, averaged 2.0 points per outing off the bench while Spencer, a 5-10 guard, contributed 1.7 points per game a season ago. Henkenius averaged one point per game a season ago as a freshman. The Titans finished in the middle of the pack in the Twin Lakes Conference last season and Clark believes there are two teams who will likely vie for the league championship this winter. “East Sac County and NewellFonda have considerable returning experience and talent,” said coach Clark. The Titans have four home games in December, five home contests in January and two home tilts in February.

Also returning as letterwinners with 30-plus win totals from a season ago for the Titans include junior Colin Corey, who was 42-14 a season ago, and fellow junior Jeff King, who finished 34-12 last season for the Titans, along with sophomores Jordan Payne (34-19 in 2012-13) and Landon Makinson (31-19 in 2012-13). The Titans have been dominant in the Twin Lakes Conference over the last eight seasons as a combined wrestling program and Schultz believes that tradition can continue this winter. “Our programs tradition pushes us to stay on top the Twin Lakes Conference, we have a 45-8 conference dual meet record over our eight years together, and a 210-59 overall dual meet record in the same time frame,” said Schultz. “The Twin Lakes Conference continues to show the rest of the state how much damage it can do at State year after year,” said Schultz. “I don’t see this trend changing as we have some great individuals in this
conference. With that being said we need to be prepared for each and every conference dual if we want to finish on top. Manson should be strong again and Pocahontas will also figure somewhere in there, and Alta-Aurelia will be much improved.” The Titans begin the 2013-
