No snow . . . no problem Ogden’s Winter Olympics, hosted by area churches, does not require snow or ice.

Approximately 120 7th through 12th graders attended the third annual event Wednesday evening, Dec. 4 at the Sunstream Retreat Center (see below). Teams competed in events such as Speed Skating Relay, Human Curling, Cross Country Ski Race, Uphill Ski Jump, and 4-Goal Hockey.

Introduction of Shelter Director at Boone Area Humane Society The Board of Directors for the Boone Area Humane Society (BAHS) is pleased to announce that the position of Shelter Director has been filled by area resident Terri Ward. Ward began her duties as Shelter Director Monday, Dec. 16.

Ward was instrumental in the start-up of the Story County-Nevada Shelter in Nevada and has been involved in various business and volunteer activities in the Boone area for several years. You are invited to stop at the Shelter at 228 W 16th

Street in Boone and welcome her.

In the past months, the Boone Area Humane Society Shelter has been in a state of transition and reorganization. This process continues as work is done to improve several aspects of the Shelter.

Stay tuned for more information about programs that are in the planning stages, with the intention of inaugurating, in the next few months. Among these programs will be a volunteer education and class schedule program, a foster pet pro-

gram and other volunteer and “get involved” opportunities for folks in Boone, Boone County and the surrounding areas.

In addition, the upcoming fundraisers include involvement in the Boone Home Show Feb. 21 and 22 and the third Annual “Pawty 4 Paws” Friday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at Seven Oaks Recreation Area west of Boone. Remember to continue donation to the Annual BAHS Rummage Sale April 30 through May 3, 2014.

For me to get away for even a day takes a lot of preparation, planning and a bit of luck. To leave for a whole week is almost unthinkable. But after getting the news that my mother is having some serious health problems, I needed to go see her. Traveling this time of the year is always a challenge. I usually enjoy traveling. Not this time.

New Mexico was having a bad winter storm with snow, icy roads, wind and cold. I had to be at the airport in Albuquerque early for my flight to Iowa, so I drove down the day before. I didn’t want to drive on the icy roads going through the gorge, so I drove through the falling snow, taking the longer route that bypassed the gorge. This added an additional 25 miles of driving. I figured when I got to Santa Fe, the weather would be better. It wasn’t. Driving out of Santa Fe towards Albuquerque was nasty. I could only go 30 to 35 miles per hour on the slick, snow packed interstate. The usual three hour drive took me just under five hours.

The next day my flight to Denver was smooth and I began looking forward to being back in Iowa in a few hours. In Denver it was minus two degrees, and my connecting flight was delayed a few hours due to storms in Texas. By the time I made it to Des Moines, picked up the rental car and got to Newton, it was late in the evening. But it was good to be home again.

I spent the next few days catching up on family matters and enjoying spending time with my mother. It was cold – really, really cold – and after a couple days I was longing for summer. Aside from visiting my family, I was looking forward to driving to Ogden the day before heading back to New Mexico, and seeing friends there. It had been way too long since I’d seen Kathy and Sharon, and I wanted to drop in on a few other friends in the area and pay them a surprise visit.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. I got up early that morning and checked out the weather and travel conditions. It was not good. I’ve never been timid about winter driving, but this was a bit worse than I am used to and I didn’t want to take a chance of having an accident. I reluctantly gave up on the idea of lunch in Ogden.

I got to Des Moines early the next morning to catch my flight back. Of course, it was lots warmer and the roads were perfect on the day I left. It sure would have been nice if it’d been that way the previous day. I checked in and found out my flight was delayed due to mechanical problems. Unreal. I ended up sitting in the airport in Des Moines till 6 p.m. I was so grumpy! I could have used that time to drive to Ogden for lunch and still get back in plenty of time to catch my flight, if I’d only known. But they kept delaying it an hour at a time, till I was beginning to wonder if I’d be spending the night there.

As luck would have it, the flight that I had been rebooked on from Denver to Albuquerque also was delayed. I ended up arriving back in New Mexico after 11 p.m. and then had to make the three hour drive home from there.

Besides the stressful travel conditions, it was a very emotional and difficult time. I was thankful that I was able to make it, though, and to have the time with my mother. It’s hard to describe how my relationship with my mother has been throughout my life. Sometimes it’s been a lot like this particular journey back to Iowa – testing my mettle! I have always loved and greatly respected my mother, and after the time I spent with her this past week, I have an even greater appreciation for her. I felt bad at times because since I moved to New Mexico, we have drifted apart and I do not see her very often.

It’s been said that a person will never find such a deep involvement as there is between a child and mother and though the child will become a separate individual sooner or later, somewhere deep down in the unconscious the mother and the child remain linked. The physical connection may have been disconnected; the spiritual connection is never disconnected. I never really understood those words, until this trip back home.

As I sorted through the many memories and emotions that my trip back to Iowa brought up, I was reminded again of how blessed I have been. I had some pretty significant insights into my own life, as I struggled to cope with the challenges of my mother’s life now. I realized, as I dealt with the discomfort of tough decisions and a feeling of helplessness that I could not do more for my mother, just how strong a woman she is. Often people have said what a strong woman I am. Now I know why that is. I had the best teacher - my mother. I am proud to be her daughter.

Everyone needs a place of sanctuary, and coming home to Taos made me realize this even more. Friends and family are precious. Life is good.

10 Years Ago From the Dec. 17, 2003 issue Democratic presidential candidate Dick Gephardt will be in Ogden Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 at 8:30 a.m. to rally supporters and meet with Boone County caucus-goers.

Andrea Haglund recently returned home from National 4-H Congress held in Atlanta, GA. This trip was an exciting experience from meeting the 2004 Miss America to doing community service in Atlanta.

A fire at the residence of Elmer Lingner, 337 SW Fifth street, caused extensive damage early Thursday morning, Dec. 11, 2003. Lingner was awakened by the sound of popping and cracking from flames in the living room, which appears to be the “room of origin”, according to Ogden Fire Chief Dan Wilson.

Lingner escaped without injury and placed the emergency call at approximately 1:19 a.m.

Members of Company D 109th Aviation unit will be welcomed home at a public ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds community building. The unit will return to Iowa Saturday, Dec. 20. Company D was one of the first Iowa National Guard units deployed, being activated in November 2001. The unit was home for 100 days, then reactivated Feb. 10, 2003.

30 Years Ago From the Dec. 21, 1983 Issue Several Ogden area residents were involved in a seven-car pileup near Boone Tuesday, Dec. 13, as an unidentified driver and slick roadways provided the setting for west bound travelers on Highway 30, according to the Boone Police Department report. Ogden’s John Stribling, Brenda Busch, Margaret Mahoney and Ione Jones of rural Boone, were all driving vehicles connected with the incident. None were seriously injured.

Airman Ann J. Hansen, daughter of Jean A. and Thomas K. Gilpin, has been assigned to Chanute Air Force Base, IL., after completing Air Force basic training. Hansen will now receive specialized instruction in the aircraft maintenance field.

She is a 1979 graduate of StuartMenlo High School.

Roger Maach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Maach, rural Grand Junction, was among the 136 students to receive degrees in fall com-

60 Years Ago From the Dec. 24, 1953 Issue Twila Peters Bittner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Peters of Ogden, was one of 218 candidates receiving degrees in ceremonies Friday, Dec. 18 at Iowa State College, Mrs. Bittner was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics.

Mr. and Mrs. James Shaw are the parents of a daughter Jamie Elise, born Friday, Dec. 18 in Madison, WI. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Shaw of Boone and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sexauer of Ogden.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pritchard of Pilot Mound are the parents of a new son born Dec. 21. He has been named David Neil. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Loren Wayne and Mr. and Mrs. William Pritchard of Ogden.

Douglas MacPherson was nine years old on Sunday, Dec. 20 and celebrated the event with a party Saturday afternoon following the show at the Ogden theatre. Games and refreshments were enjoyed by Doug, Rosie, and Susan Stumbo, Carol and Linda Beckman, Mark Dohms, Royce Rinehart, Robert Hutchins, Russell Junck, Dennis Peters, Mary Junck and Robert Erickson.

Sisters and brothers of Mr. and Mrs. John Hagge and several of their children with their families gathered at the Hagge home Sunday, Dec. 13 in celebration of their 45th wedding anniversary.

John Jensen who received his discharge at MacDill AFB and arrived in Ogden Dec. 9 is visiting in the home of his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Carpenter, Lana Jo and Debra.

What A Chiropractor Can Do For Athletic Injuries

Football, basketball, hockey, and other sports whose very nature results in bodily contact between the players are the most frequent offenders. Broken limbs and serious cuts can take a player out of a game and require immediate treatment.

But what of the less obvious injuries, those which may start as a minor ache or sprain and may not appear for hours, days, or even weeks after the initial cause?

Many athletic injuries are not even the result of bodily contact, and the sufferer cannot recall any extraordinary activity which might have cause hid condition.

Golfers or tennis players may dislocate a shoulder during a swing or serve. The baseball outfielder can develop a cervical subluxation (dislocation of the vertebrae) while craning his neck to follow a high fly ball. A skater might hit a hole in the ice and fall, resulting in whiplash.

Since the normal functioning of a healthy body is dependent on the flow of nerve energy to all parts of the body, it is important that such subluxations be corrected. If a vertebra is dislocated, it will pinch the nerve between it and the succeeding vertebra and reduce the flow of nervous energy to one or more vital organ or muscle structures. Head and neck pains, nausea, or numbness may result.

Sunday, December 1 2:22 a.m.: Deputy Twigg made a traffic stop at Highway 17 and Highway 30 and after a brief investigation found the driver Victoria Sellers possibly impaired. She was detained and taken to the BCJ for further investigation into possible OWI. 9:24 p.m.: A person called to report a person yelling outside her residence for her to come out. The caller stated she does not know the people and was not going out.

Deputies Zeutenhorst and Twigg responded the 1900 block of S Ave. Upon arrival deputies located the subjects and a vehicle and began an investigation and discovered that the two individuals Benjamin Gardiner and Chadwick Adkisson may have been involved in a theft from a Kohls Store in Ames earlier.

Ames PD was contacted and took custody of the two individuals for further investigation.

Tuesday, December 3 9:07 a.m.: A person called to report that his friend was suicidal and wanted the sheriff’s department to check on her. Deputies did check on her and found her to be fine.

9:09 a.m.: A person called from the 2000 block of 205th St. to report that someone tried to enter their house while they were asleep. Their son was woke up by the event. They checked their property and found nothing was missing or damaged.

Deputy Ruter began an investigation.

Wednesday, December 4 7:28 p.m.: A person called to report that she and her boyfriend were just in a fight at their residence located in the 400 block of 190th St. Deputy Pontius responded to the area. By the time the deputy arrived the boyfriend had left. There was no physical injury to the reporting party, and Deputy Pontius advised the reporting party how to obtain a civil protection order.

Thursday, December 5 11:34 a.m.: A person came into the BCSO to report that a headstone at the Oakdale Cemetary was spray painted. Sheriff Elsberry took the report. The investigation into the incident is continuing.

Sheriff’s Office called to report they had Jermey Bogue in custody on a warrant from Boone County on the original charge of failure to appear for court. Bogue posted bond and was released to appear later.

Friday, December 6 2:02 a.m.: Deputy made a traffic stop at 210th and S Ave. After a brief investigation the driver of the vehicle Edward Whitney was taken to the BCJ for further testing into possible OWI. He was released pending the results of the testing.

Sunday, December 8 Deputies from the BCSO responded to numerous vehicle accidents because of the snow conditions and slick surfaces.

1:47 a.m.: Sgt Wingate made a traffic stop in the La Caretta parking lot for a traffic violation. Upon further investigation the driver of the vehicle Kortez Flagg was taken into custody for alledged OWI and taken to the BCSO for further testing.

2:04 a.m.: Deputy Quinn made a traffic stop at 210th and R Ave. After a brief investigation the driver of the vehicle Josh Mayfield was taken into custody for investigation into possible OWI, driving left of center and carrying a firearm while intoxicated.

He was transported to the BCSO for further testing.

1:53 p.m.: Deputy Spencer responded to an alarm at the United Community bus barn. Deputy Spencer checked but was busy with an accident at the time and responded later. After a short time the person in charge advised he set off the alarm after wrapping up a volley ball game at the school.

3:34 p.m.: Deputy Spencer was dispatched to a vehicle in the ditch in the 2000 block of Owl Ave. Upon his arrival Deputy Spencer made contact with the driver Robert D Miller. He advised he lost control after he locked up his brakes and went into the ditch. After a brief investigation Miller was taken into custody for investigation into OWI.

The church of Christ Who are these people?

The Bible says that God is the Creator of all things (Ephesians 3:9).

How could God create the Devil if he is so evil? The scriptures indicate that God created all things, including the Devil. Job 1:6 says, “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.” The fact that Satan came “among” them indicates that he was of the same origin as these others who were called, “the sons of God” as God’s creation.

Did God create the Devil evil? The scriptures tell us that God cannot create anything that is evil. In James 1:17 we read, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” The Devil must have been good when God created him. How did the Devil become evil?

We find a hint in 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6. Some of God’s angels were created good and then choose to do that which is wrong. Jude says, “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” While the Bible does not say that Satan was an angel, it would not be difficult to understand that Satan also was created good and then sinned and fell. In John 8:44 Jesus says that the Devil is the “father” of lies. Since all evil is simply a modification of the truth into falsehood, this would indicate that the Devil was the first created being to sin.

So what is the Devil? Was he an angel or something else? The Bible does indicate that there are other heavenly beings besides angels. Michael is called an archangel in Jude 9 indicating that there are certain positions of authority among the angels. We read of Cherubims in the Bible, the heavenly beings that Moses was to form on the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:18). We also read of Seraphims in Isaiah 6:2 and Isaiah 6:6. Ezekiel also describes some types of “living creatures” in Ezekiel 1 that appear to be some kind of heavenly creation of God. The basic issue is that we just don’t know enough about Satan to determine his beginnings.

Deuteronomy 29:29 says, “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

Minutes of a Regular Monthly Meeting of The Board of Directors of the Ogden Community School District December 9, 2013 I. CALL TO ORDER: The Ogden Board of Education held a regular Board meeting Monday, December 9, 2013 in the Ogden Community School District High School Library. Members present included Pete Bergstrom, Tom Cleveland, Sally Good, Camille Schroeder and Matt Van Sickle.

Meeting was called to order by Board President Sally Good at 6:32 p.m.

Other members present were Superintendent Brad Jermeland and Kris Van Pelt, Board Secretary.

2. School Vehicle Purchase: Pete Bergstrom moved to approve the bid received by Karl Chevrolet, Inc. for a 2014 Express Van RWD 2500 at a total price of $13,774.76 after trade in of the 2009 Ford Econoline Van. Tom Cleveland seconded the motion. The motion carried 5-0.

3. Drivers Education – Summer 2014: The Board directed Superintendent Jermeland to begin the process of sending out request for proposals in regard to outsourcing the driver education program.

A recommendation to the Board will be presented at the January 13, 2014 regular board meeting as to whether the program will be outsourced or in house.

B. Curriculum/School Improvement/ Professional Development 1. School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) Committee Report: The School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) met on Monday, November 18, 2013. Notes from the meeting were reviewed. The committee’s next meeting will be January 20, 2014.

C. Special Education Headcount 1. The district’s weighted enrollment summary was provided for informational purposes only. This summary provides information regarding special education student enrollment and additional weighting for special education programming. Also provided to the Board was a five year trend of the district’s weighted enrollment.

ORDINANCE NO. 121 BOARD OF SUPERVISOR BOONE COUNTY, IOWA ORDINANCE NO. 121 ORDINANCE AMENDING THE OFFICIAL BOONE COUNTY ZONING MAP PIN 088228282400001 DESCRIBED AS Southeast Quarter (1/4) of the Northwest Quarter (1/4) of Section 28, Township 82 North, Range 28 West of the 5th P.M., Union Township, Boone County, Iowa.

WHEREAS, Farmers Cooperative Company applied for the rezoning of 36.8 acres, more or less, of high CSR rated land located approximately two miles north of the City of Perry. The site is located in Union Township, County of Boone. Rezoning from A-1 (Agricultural Conservation District) to A-2 (Agriculture Business) is necessary in order to accommodate the construction of a greenfield fertilizer, seed and crop protection storage and distribution center including the storage for dry, liquid and anhydrous ammonia fertilizer, a warehouse for chemicals and seed, an office and scale along with a storm water drainage pond.

WHEREAS, at certain times it is necessary to clarify or change the language of the Zoning Ordinance in order to make regulations more proficient in addressing issues of growth and desires of the citizens. It is also necessary to clarify the ordinance to make it organized and easier to understand.

WHEREAS, the Director of Planning and Development forwarded a recommendation for approval to the Boone County Zoning Commission. The Zoning Commission held a public hearing on Monday, October 28, 2013 in accordance with Iowa Code and has forwarded a Final Report to the Boone County Board of Supervisors recommending approval of Farmers Cooperative Company’s petition to rezone 36.8 acres, more or less, from A-1 Agricultural Conservation district to A-2 Agricultural Business District to accommodate the construction of a greenfield fertilizer, seed and crop protection storage and distribution center including the storage for dry, liquid and anhydrous ammonia fertilizer, a warehouse for chemicals and seed, an

If you ask Ogden’s Coach Dave Morris to name his team’s toughest conference opponents, it’s a good bet the name Des Moines Christian will come up. There’s definitely a reason for that, as the Bulldogs discovered Tuesday night.

The Lions took the lead right from the start, jumping ahead by a score of 23-9 in the first quarter.

Ogden seemed to recover early in the second quarter, only to fall behind by 15 points going into halftime. The Bulldogs suffered another setback shortly before half, when senior Grant Heineman committed his fourth foul.

Things didn’t get much better in the second frame. Ogden’s only real offensive success came from driving to the basket and drawing fouls. DMC’s shooting, speed, and size simply couldn’t be stopped. The Bulldogs finished the game with 23 turnovers, and lost 67-40.

Jared Adreon led the team in scoring with 9 points. Grant Heineman and Cayce Good were right behind with 8 points each.

Earlham 70 - Ogden 46 Another night, another brutal game. After suffering their first loss to Des Moines Christian, the Bulldog boys traveled to Earlham on Friday, hoping for better luck.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.

The Bulldogs didn’t score for the first four minutes of the game, and were down 21-5 after the first quarter. By halftime, Earlham’s lead had increased to 18 points. Ogden, however, wasn’t giving up just yet.

In the third quarter the Bulldogs came out firing, and were able to cut the gap down to just 7 points. Unfortunately, that was all the closer they got. The physical game became contentious as Ogden struggled desperately to hold on, but in the end Earlham pulled out the win by a score of 70-46.

Cayce Good scored 26 points to lead the Bulldogs, and Grant Heineman produced another double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 boards.

In next week’s Reporter, Ogden faces Woodward-Granger, West Central Valley, and Perry.

Complete stats were unavailable for the Earlham game.

The local wrestlers competed against Coon Rapids-Bayard, North Butler, Clarke, Osceola, Gilbert and Greene County in last Saturday’s dual tournament held in Ogden.

Their only team loss was to tournament runner-up Gilbert. The Bulldogs finished third. Humboldt was tournament champion.

“We had an outstanding performance yesterday in a very tough tournament,” said Coach Brian Reimers the next day. “Nine ranked wrestlers competed in the field of 10 teams.”

Kyler Kiner and Nick Ross both were 5-0 on the day for the Bulldog grapplers. Putting in another good day was Austin Lentz whose only loss was to the number one ranked wrestler from North Butler.

Austin McCloud avenged an earlier season loss to Greene County’s Abraham Yoder.

Reimers said it was an outstanding day to see quality wrestling Ogden has a home quadrangular Thursday then close out the pre-Christmas season Saturday at Lynnville-Sully.

Cayce Good tallied 8 points against Des Moines Christian (above).

He led the Bulldogs with 26 points in last Friday night’s game at Earlham.

It was a rough start on the road for Ogden. After starting the season 2-0 last week, the Bulldog girls traveled to Des Moines Christian Tuesday night and were stopped cold.

The DMC Lions dominated the game right from the first tip, running the court and pressing their way to a quick 9-0 lead. Ogden tried to slow the game down with a zone defense, but were simply overwhelmed by the Lions’ superior size, speed, and shooting. At half, the Bulldogs were down 35-22. Things didn’t improve during the second half. Des Moines Christian started out with another fast 7-0 run, and only allowed Ogden 4 points in the third quarter. By the final buzzer, the Lions led 68-41.

After the game, Coach Lanny Stumbo talked about things to work on with his girls. “We’ll definitely work a lot on ball handling, defense, and rebounding,” he said. “Good rebounding, especially good boxouts, will work even against bigger opponents.”

Sophomore Anna Langel led the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with 9 points. Abbey Gustafson scored 7 points, while Audra Burt and Liz Good each had 6.

from the get-go. The Earlham Cardinals pressed Ogden early, in hopes of taking a quick lead, but the Bulldogs fought back with solid passing and ball handling. Ogden showed some real aggressiveness as well, fighting for loose balls and rebounds, and racking up a number of steals. Going into half, the Bulldogs had a 34-32 lead.

In the second half, the action remained just as intense. During the third quarter, both Jordan Poock and Liz Good hit key 3-pointers to keep Ogden in the game. Late in the fourth, the Bulldogs took a one point lead, and called a timeout with 1:11 left.

After that, nothing went right.

Ogden allowed Earlham to score quickly, then turned the ball over four times within a minute. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals led 63-57.

Jordan Poock and Liz Good led the Bulldogs in scoring, tallying up 13 points each. Audra Burt followed with 10 points, and Anna Langel scored 8. Abbey Gustafson put up 7 points early on, but took an elbow to the face during the second quarter and had to leave the game.

OGDEN POLICE REPORT Monday, December 9 8:15 a.m.: Officer received a report of a vehicle that had slid on the snow covered road and hit the curb at the west entrance to the high school. The officer called a tow truck for the vehicle.

2:30 p.m.: An Ogden resident reported to City Hall that his neighbor was moving snow from their parking onto his parking.

3:16 p.m.: Officer responded to an incomplete 911 call from an Ogden residence. This was determined to be a phone issue.

Wednesday, December 11 12:36 p.m.: Officer responded to an incomplete 911 at 413 W. Cherry St. Thursday, December 12 10:26 a.m.: Officer checked on a

stranded motorist in the 900 block of 216th St. 2:23 p.m.: Officer assisted a Boone County Deputy locate a subject.

4:05 p.m.: Officer assisted a landlord with a civil matter.

6:40 p.m.: Officer received a complaint on a possible intoxicated driver on old Highway 30. Officer located the vehicle and everything was okay.

Friday, December 13 2:11 p.m.: Officer did a welfare check on animals at 401 N. 1st St. The animals were fine.

6:37 p.m.: Officer investigated harassment.

7:43 p.m.: Officer investigated harassment at the Ogden Manor.

Saturday, December 14

5:25 p.m.: Officer responded to a report of a fire at 319 N.W. 2nd St. This turned out to be a grill with an open flame.

Sunday, December 15 9:25 p.m.: Officer assisted Ogden First Responders and Boone County Ambulance.

10:20 p.m.: Officer received a report of a suspicious male in the 600 block of W. Division St. The subject was just having a cigarette.

These charges are merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
