A white, blustery, Old Fashioned Christmas

High School holiday concert Thursday The North Iowa High School band and chorus will present their annual holiday concert on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The concert will feature the high school chorus, band and jazz band performing sounds of the season. This concert will also mark the debut of the new choir robes, which were purchased following a successful fundraising effort by the Santa and Mrs. Claus joined local residents for breakfast at the Buffalo Center Public Library on chorus and the music boosters. Berggren completes four decades of service to TMNH Timely Mission Nursing Home celebrated the career of nursing home administrator Murray Berggren on Thursday, Dec. 12, as Berggren plans to retire at the end of this month following 40 years of service. “I’ve been real lucky to be here,� said Berggren, who started at the nursing home in 1973 when he was just 23 years old. He served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army for three years during the Korean War before earning his Health Care Administrator degree at Des Moines Area Community College. He came to Timely Mission right after college, and he’s been here ever since. “I want to thank all of the great residents that are here,� said Berggren. “That’s what my love was in the first place – the residents.� Berggren also thanked all the hard-working staff and the Board of Directors, who have made it possible to have a nursing home in Buffalo Center. TMNH Board President Larry Weaver presented Berggren with a plaque, thanking him for his outstanding dedication, commitment, compassion and a job well done. “Murray and all the preceding board members have done a mighty fine job of keeping this place going,� said Weaver. Berggren says he’s stayed at Timely Mission all these years because he likes the small town atmosphere. “I think the residents get treated better, and there are all the people from the town coming in for activities,� said Berggren. “They really care here.� The nursing home has changed quite a bit since Berggren started here, including additions built in 1974 and 1984, and new safety features, such as a sprinkler system. Berggren’s priorities for retirement include spending time with his wife, Karen, and his grandkids. He’ll also be getting his fishing gear ready, and he plans to spend more time taking care of himself. The Berggrens have a son, Chris, and his wife, Lisa Berggren, of Buffalo Center, who have a boy named Brayden. They also have a daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Bo Geigley, who live in West Des Moines with their two children, Lotus and Bowen.

The North Iowa varsity quiz bowl team of Caleb Ricke, Connor Smith and Jamie Roeder took second place out of about 20 teams at the Spirit Lake Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 7. North Iowa went 4-0 in the preliminary rounds, defeated Bishop Garrigan in the first round of the playoffs, and lost a close match to the LeMars team in the championship.

The JV quiz bowl team from North Iowa also took second place out of about 20 schools in the Spirit Lake Tournament held Saturday, Dec. 7. Dakota Brass, Zach Dirksen and Jami Goetz went 4-0 in the preliminary rounds and defeated Bishop Garrigan in the first round of the playoffs, before losing a close match to Algona public in the championship.

With gas rationing looming on the horizon, to what extent will Winnebago County with its 7600 or so cars be affected? TMNH %\ &DPPL $QGHUVRQ $FWLYLW\ 'LUHFWRU Happy Holidays to everyone. This has been another busy week. We have finished decorating all the trees and putting up all the other decorations. It looks so beautiful and festive. Saturday, we watched The Holiday Inn for our afternoon program, and during the evening, we watched Lawrence Welk. Donna Stevens came in on Sunday and led our worship services. We had the First Reformed and First Congregational Churches come in and sing Christmas carols through the hallways. For a special treat, The Buffingtons came with their five Children and sang and played Christmas songs for us. Thank you to all of you for a fantastic Sunday. Monday, we had You Be the Judge. Here are our topics this month: Evil Influence, Hunter Harassment and The Magic Kingdom. For our morning and evening sensory groups, we had some trivia and Finishing Lines. At 2:00 p.m., Betty Coxson came in and read some short stories. Thank you, Betty. Monica played CoverUp today during games. Tuesday, we listened to Roy Orbison for exercise. George and Darlene came today and played and sang Christmas songs. Thank you for a wonderful time. During both sensory groups, we watched A Tour of Lights. At our Anything Goes program, we played Lets Make A Deal

on our Wii. At games today, we played Oh Shoot. Wednesday, we exercised to a variety of Christmas music. For my morning sensory teasers, we had our aroma therapy session with the scent of lavender. This scent is to help with stress and relax you. At bingo today, we had 22 residents and gave out 17 Prizes. For our evening sensory group, Monica read the Buffalo Center Tribune and discussed current events. Thursday, we exercised to The Big Band. At Bible study this morning, led by Pastor Peake, we studied Isa. 35:1-10, Jas. 5:7-10 and Matt. 11:2-11. Thank you, Pastor Peake. During my sensory teasers, we reminisced about Christmas. We had a wonderful turn out for Murray’s Retirement Party. Thank you everyone, for all your well wishes. Murray will definitely be missed. Friday, we exercised to Kenny Rogers. At bowling today, our big winner was Jo Meinders; she won both games with a score of 188 and 180. For both sensory groups, we listened to Christmas music and gave hand and back massages. During Happy Hour, we played Chess and Kings Korner. We here at TMNH would like to thank Ron and Marion Meyer, James Armstrong and The Ley Family for the candy and fruit.

Holly is a therapist at the Mental Health Center in Mason City, and Ryan owns and operates Ruter Racing, LLC, in Kanawha. Holly is the daughter of Cheri Mayland of Buffalo Center and Doug Mayland of Gruver, IA. Ryan is the son of Daryl Ruter of Clear Lake.

Songs of the Season Saturday Thaddeus Ennen will present a recital of “Songs of the Season� on Saturday, Dec. 21 at United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. He is currently earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Students named to the Dean’s List must attain a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.79 for the term.

Hassebroek sings in Opus Honor Choir North Iowa Middle School and Elementary had the honor of having a student selected for 28th annual Opus Honor Choir. Seventh grader Ben Hassebroek represented North Iowa as a member of the 7th-8th grade Bass Clef Chorus at the event, held Thursday, Nov. 21 in Ames. More than 3,500 5th through 9th grade students from all over the state prepared and submitted audition CD’s with the help of their school directors. A state committee then selected 700 of the best entries to participate in the honor choir festival. The students prepared music and then practiced all day at Iowa State University with a guest conductor and presented a special concert at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. This is the top honor that a 5th-9th grade vocalist can receive in Iowa. Ben is the son of Steve and Sharla Hassebroek of Buffalo Center.

Obituary Orion Lee Orion Lee, age 80, of Buffalo Center, passed away Saturday, DeOrion Lee cember 7 at the United Hospital District in Blue Earth, MN. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., December 14, at the Heritage Town Center in Buffalo Center, with Bruce Van Stelton, Dean Dykstra and Shari Connelly officiating. Interment was at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Orion W. Lee was born to Jacob A. and Edith (Sevreid) Lee on Aug 14, 1933 on the family farm near Buffalo Center, where he was raised. He graduated from the Buffalo Center High School. He is survived by: his loving wife of 61 years, Ione; four daughters, Lynette Lee of Guadalajara, Mexico, Janelle (Rick) Erickson of Hector, MN, Delaine (Dan) Keith of Stillwater, OK, and Joyce (Tom) Kavaloski of Stillwater, MN; son-in-law Joe White of Emmetsburg; nine grandchildren, Kevin (Jaime) White, Brian and Kara White, Kaloni, Brandon, Dustin and Kendra Erickson, Aaron Keith and Kalynn (Kyle) LiaBraaten; four great- grandchildren, Ayden, Brennan, Gavin and Jamin White; sister Elinor (Leroy) Christiansen of Hutchinson, MN and twin sister Oriette Younes of Holtville, CA. He will be greatly missed by his family and a host of friends. Orion was preceded in death by: his parents; sisters, Lavona Lee and Verlaine Sherick; and daughter, Denise White. Ginger Thompson, formerly of Buffalo Center, said she played the first game in her “Blazing Hot 7s Game Book� instant-scratch ticket and won a $10,000 prize. “I just sat there and I did not say a word for a second and I went, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’� she said. “People in the pharmacy were looking through their window at me going, ‘What is your problem?’� Thompson said she told those in the pharmacy that she had just won $10,000 and asked a couple of employees to double-check her winning ticket. “I said, ‘Verify this for me. There is four zeroes there, right?’� she said. “It took three of them to look at that ticket and go, ‘Yeah, that’s what it looks like to me.’� Thompson, who is a shift man-

Rake City Council Minutes for Rake City Council Meeting December 9, 2013 7:00 PM Rake City Hall The Rake City Council met in regular session at 7:00 PM on Monday, December 9, 2013. Unapproved Minutes City of Lakota Regular Session Thursday, December 5, 2013 The Lakota City Council met in regular session at 7:00 PM adjourned from November 4, 2013 in City Hall. Meeting was called to order by Mayor Doug Price with council members Good, Janssen, Boekelman and Steven present. Absent: Kahler. Also in attendance were Water Superintendent Gary Anderson and City Clerk Amber Shelton. Steven moved, seconded by Good, to approve the agenda. Four ayes, motion carried. Steven moved, seconded by Janssen, to approve the consent agenda. Four ayes, motion carried. Sewer Report was given by Tom Madden of Water Report was given by Water Superintendent Anderson. Mayors Report was given by Mayor Price regarding a bus stop shelter.

Steven moved, seconded by Good, to approve the construction and installation, within the expense of $1,000, of a bus stop shelter. Four ayes, motion carried. Kossuth County Sheriff, Steve Kollasch, visited with mayor and council about crime prevention measures. Boekelman moved, seconded by Good, to approve reimbursement of mileage for November 25, 2013 clerk’s meeting. Four ayes, motion carried. Ladies win after one-point loss The Lady Bison came just short of victory in their closest contest of the season on Saturday, Dec. 7, as they hosted St. Ansgar. North Iowa made a comeback in the third quarter after the Saints led during the first half, but St. Ansgar pulled it out with a 51-50 win. Paige Hassebroek scored seven field goals and two free throws to lead the Lady Bison with 16 points, followed by Krista Hovland with 12 points, Mica Johnson eight, and Rachel Boekelman and Rebecca Murray with seven each. Bowlers find success in Waterloo after loss to Indians The North Iowa bowlers dropped close contests on Friday, Dec. 6, as they hosted the Indians of Forest City. The Lady Bison were 32 points off the Indians, as they lost their meet 1919-1887, and the boys were 59 pins behind, as the Indians won that meet, 2293-2234. Spencer Armstrong maintained his 200+ average, with games of 221 and 199 for a 410 total. He was followed by Noah Melz with a 361 series and Josh Clarke with a personal best series of 313. Bison open conference play with losses

The North Iowa Bison are off to a rocky start in the North Iowa Conference, after losing their first two conference basketball games last week. The Bison traveled to Lake Mills on Tuesday, Dec. 10, where they fell 52-41 to the Bulldogs, and they hosted Forest City on Friday, Dec. 13, in a 64-42 loss. “At Lake Mills, we did a good job of establishing an inside game,” said Bison Head Coach Chad Hinders. “Our first quarter shooting consisted of a lot of 6-12 foot shots. We were successful at making six out of 10 shots at that range. Defensively, we did a good job of contesting shots in the paint, but unfortunately, Granger Kingland found three opportunities to shoot from the corner; making all three to keep pace with us. “Offensively, the first quarter was our best scoring output; putting up 15 points,” said Hinders. “We struggled through the second and third quarters when they changed defenses and really started paying attention to our inside game. The Bulldogs were able to build an eight point lead during this time. Towards the end of the third and beginning of the fourth, we found some success inside and worked our way back to take the lead 39-38 early in the fourth quarter. But from that point, Lake Mills outscored us 14-2 to take the contest, 5241. “Over half their shots were three pointers, and of their makes, 10/18 were from behind the arc,” noted Hinders. “They are very good shooters, and we have to learn to identify offensive threats and make sure they are covered throughout a possession or do not get loose on an inbounds play. It really came down to the fact that they made the plays down the stretch, and we did not. I am pleased that we fought hard to get back in the game. At one point in the second half, we had the chance to get the lead down to single digits but were unable to convert,” said Hinders. “Tonight, we did improve on locating shooters but still have areas to improve on. We did a good job on their point guard Erich Erdman, but they received points from their center Isaiah Loeschen and wing Ethan Erdman that proved to be problematic,” said Coach Hinders. “The disappointing fact was the baskets that came from these two individuals were either on second chance opportunities when we were unable to keep him off the boards after he had missed his initial shot (Loeschen) or when we failed to recognize a shooter on the wing (Erdman). Corporon and Voortmann led the Bison on the scoreboard with eight points each, followed by Taylor Ostermann and Paden with six apiece. Aukes and Derek Yegge each scored five, and Connor Smith scored four. Voortmann led in rebounds with seven, followed by Corporon with six. Corporon totaled four blocks. “The keys to both conference games were very similar,” said Hinders. “Lake Mills and Forest City have experienced guards that can really shoot the ball. We need to make sure we account for them at all times, and we cannot afford to give them open looks, because that most likely will lead to three points every time. The only difference between the two is

that Forest City has more of a true post player, and Lake Mills has players that do the little things to get their shooters open. “It doesn’t get any easier in the conference, as we will face an athletic team in Newman Catholic,” said Hinders of the game in Mason City this Tuesday. “They have three players with experience, and they have been playing well lately. They were kind of overlooked last year and have taken that to heart and are looking to prove people wrong. They have played the same two conference teams we have and have played them tough. Jensen also contributed six offensive rebounds and four steals. The Bison hosted Forest City on Friday, Dec. 13, resulting in North Iowa’s first loss, 37-26. Haisman led the Bison in scoring with eight points, while Logan Eichenberger added six and Jensen scored five. The Bison then traveled to Clarion for a Saturday afternoon game on December 14. Once again, the Bison prevailed with a 32-29 victory; improving their record to four wins and one loss.
