Manson plans signs for Hwy. 20

By Ken Ross Graphic-Advocate editor Over a year ago, the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors approved a request from the Rockwell City Revitalization Committee and the City of Rockwell City to allow the erection of two signs along Hwy 20, one facing westbound traffic and one facing eastbound traffic, notifying motorists of some services and attractions in Rockwell City.

The request was approved and the signs, 10 by 20 foot signs with black lettering on a yellow background, were put up.

At the Dec. 10 meeting this year, the city of Manson and the Manson Economic Development Corporation presented a request that supervisors approve construction of two 8 by 16 foot signs directing travelers into Manson, a request that approved by the supervisors.

The signs will be placed east of Red Oak Ave and Highway 20 intersection on Robert Lenz’s property and the other sign will be located west of Traer Avenue and Highway 20 intersection on Kevin Vosberg’s property.

In neither case is county property being used or county funds provided. At a meeting last year, one of the supervisors asked why county permission was needed. Kelly Smidt explained at that meeting that a federal rule requires that since the signs are outside of the city, that

the request must be submitted to the county.

Masons spread Christmas cheer the Grand Lodge of Iowa and their own pockets to make a brighter Christmas for many children.

Heidi Billmeier, Calhoun County coordinator, provided 25 children’s wishes and sizes to the lodge. Lodge members brought their gifts to the regular monthly meeting recently and enjoyed looking over the diverse assortment of toys and outfits.

County approves ambulance bid

By Ken Ross Graphic-Advocate Editor Of the two bids for an ambulance chassis and engine, the dealer selected by the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 10 was from farther away than the other dealership but offered the lower bid.

Kerrie Hull, E-911 Coordinator, recommended the low bid from Cross Timbers Emergency Vehicles, out of Kansas City, Mo., for $74,768. This includes picking up an ambulance in Calhoun, remounting a box from the ambulance on a new chassis in Kansas City and bringing the new ambulance remount back.

Among the participants in the courthouse square displays, the first place winner is United Bank of Iowa.

Second place goes to RC Rotary and third place goes to Calhoun County Officers.

The other bid was for $79,689 from a Rock Rapids based dealer, but it is uncertain whether that would include pickup and delivery.

It doesn’t matter because it would not be the low bid in either case.

Both bids are for a V-10 gas engine and are for net cost after trade-in.

Other EMS crew members at the meeting were Charlie Peyton, Luke Winkelman and Bob Murley.

Part of the purchase price will be paid for through rural basic fund and part will come from the EMS operating budget.

County returns check from city of Lytton

By Ken Ross Graphic-Advocate It is not often that the county returns a check for unpaid property tax without a request from the taxpayer, but the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors voted at their Dec. 10 meeting to return a check for $238 from the city of Lytton for payment of an unresolved tax debt on property the city had acquired.

City governments do not generally pay property taxes but any purchaser regardless of tax exempt status becomes responsible for past due tax to clear the property of any liens unless tax forgiveness or a tax compromise is approved in order to

get abandoned or nuisance properties back on the tax rolls.

That, in fact, was how the discussion of the property was initiated, during presentation from County Treasurer Lori Erkenbrack,of tax compromise proposals.

Although the City of Lytton had not requested forgiveness of a debt on a piece of property acquired, it was noted by Supervisor Dean Hoag that the county had approved tax forgiveness for other municipalities to show county support for nuisance abatement efforts by cities.

All three supervisors voted to direct Erkenbrack to return the check to Lytton.

Simplicity needed for efficiency and transparency

Empty Nest By Curt Swarm Let Me Photograph Your Favorite Stuffed Animal!

Have a favorite stuffed animal from your childhood? Or does your current child have a favorite stuffed animal or teddy bear? Well, let me photograph it. Free!

I was inspired by Irish photographer Mark Nixon’s photographs floating around on the internet. Part of his portfolio are pictures of raggedy stuffed animals.

He put out a call for people to bring in their favorite stuffed animal from childhood, and he would photograph it. These pictures are quite touching, not to mention cute, and rather emotional. I thought, “I’d like to do this.”

So I put in a call to my 32-year old son. “Remember Puppy?” I asked.

Of course he did. “Well, I’d like to photograph Puppy.” Voila, the first of my stuffed-animal pictures was born.

A little history of Puppy: When the kids were small, I took a drawing class, and drew Puppy. As a teenager, my son, not to be outdone by Pa, also drew Puppy. So, we have both drawn, Puppy, and now immortalized him further through photography. And if I can find those two drawings, I’m going to frame them. By the way, my son always said his drawing of Puppy was better. If there’s going to be familial friction, that’s the kind to have!

Here’s the deal, bring me your favorite stuffed animal or doll, the raggedy the better, and I will photograph it while you wait.

Contact information is bellow. Also, if you have any stories connected with the stuffed animal, I’m interested in those, too—like the time Teddy came up missing, or the time Princess fell into the creek, or what Fuzzy meant to you. One-eyed toys, or toys with an ear or limb missing, are particularly touching.

We instinctively distrust what we don’t understand. That’s a good instinct to have because complexity is the primary tool of the devious.

It is also the tool of the overly detail-oriented person, what in modern jargon is called a policy wonk. I stress the qualifier “overly” here because to a certain point, being detail oriented is a good thing, a characteristic I happen to have and yes, I’m getting too detailed here, so back to my point.

In order for a leader, particularly a U.S. president, to achieve lasting policy goals he needs to have a grand design that is easily understood.

Unfortunately, President Barack Obama is a policy wonk. His overly complex plans are too detailed to be effectively promoted and complexity tends to be inefficient, particularly when lack of predictability is present for a policy that requires a high level of public participation. Such is the case with the Affordable Care Act. Of course, simplicity is not a virtue if the simple idea is simply wrong. For many decades, fiscal conservatives have been promoting the virtue of a balanced federal budget. That’s a good idea to promote but administration after administration, Republican and Democrat, failed to balance the budget.

Out of frustration, some fiscal conservatives got too simple (and wrong) in their approach by promoting the idea that government, at least at the federal level, is a bad thing, thus the government shutdown. Many of the tea partiers were giddier at the start of the government shutdown than children who’ve been told that school was cancelled indefinitely.

As the effects of the government shutdown became evident, the tea partiers were faced with the reality that they weren’t really anarchists.

Most were not even true libertarians.

As each controversial impact arose from the shutdown, the tea partiers tried to mitigate the effects in a piecemeal fashion, even staging illconceived publicity events designed to divert anger to the administration for refusing to accept piecemeal proposals.

Afterwards, it was time for some tea party spokesman to get just slightly less simple and advocate a clear policy alternative to what they opposed. But no, they had nothing.

Sometimes being simple is just simple-mindedness with maybe a bit of cowardice thrown in.

So after the tea party defeat, Obama had an opportunity to consolidate his strength and mitigate looming catastrophe by forcing the hand of his opponents. He could have, at that point, acknowledged that implementation of the Affordable Care Act was not going smoothly and that he needed bipartisan cooperation if any national health care plan was going to work.

That might mean starting from scratch and establishing goals that could be widely accepted. A referendum could be presented to Congress that: Every citizen, regardless of age, income or medical history, should have access to emergency medical services and ongoing critical or preventative care without imposing ruinous expense to any individual citizen or generating bad debt for hospitals and clinics.

If that cannot be widely accepted as a starting point, then there is no reason to go forward.

The simplest and ultimately the only way to achieve the goal is to establish a single payer plan. The beneficiaries besides the currently uninsured would be health care facilities and small businesses.

Those entities would be relieved of an excessive burden and an atmosphere of uncertainty about the future.

But Obama plowed ahead with his overly complex plan, one that might conceivably become operational but will eventually evolve into a single payer system.

His other policy initiatives, gun reform and immigration reform, have too many moving parts. As

with children on Christmas Eve while Santa slides down the chimney.

Tags on stuffed animals are particularly precious. I know my kids would often finger the tags on their stuffed animal, as they fell asleep. So, if your stuffed animal has a tag, don’t cut if off! The tag is a part of it’s feel, it’s personality, its memories; and the tag is photogenic.

I’m struck by the love a child (or adult) bears a cherished toy.

That love flows, quite easily onto a photograph—like sap from a maple tree in the dead of winter.

So, bring me your tired, your poor, your yearning Teddies begging to be photographed. I’ll give them my best shot. Next year, I’m thinking of doing pets.

far as immigration reform, the only part that I would personally support is allowing easy citizenship for anyone who spent most of his or her childhood in the country and doesn’t know any other life than as an American.

The plan approved by the Senate included billions of dollars in contracts for specifically named companies, a grostequely expensive fence all along our southern border, work visas for as many as 180,000 unskilled workers to drive down wages in an economy with too few jobs already and permanent residency for millions of immigrants here illegally. That is supposedly a composite of everybody’s wish list to make everyone happy.

The simplest way to discourage illegal immigration would be harsh penalties for employers who hire them and denial of social programs to non-citizens. This has been referred to as self-deportation, supposedly an uglier form of deportation than taking people into custody and escorting them in restraints out of the country. I don’t get it.

Taking apart gun reform and promoting the most acceptable portions, such as universal background checks, has been unsuccessful but that may be the approach most likely to succeed in the future.

As long as we’re talking about reform, how about tax reform, making federal income tax simple enough that our society does not divert billions of hours of highly skilled work to tax preparation each year nor distort business practices because of the millions of words in our convoluted tax code.

Neither Congress nor President Obama is accomplishing much of lasting value because they do not have a clear vision understood by each other or by the public, perhaps not even by themselves.

WHEREAS the position shall be considered full time as of January 1, 2014 and the initial annual salary of the County Attorney shall be $79,706.00 and shall remain effective until changed as provided in Iowa Code Section 331.907. Ayes all. Motion carried.

Beth Bahsen, Senior Associate Director, Elderbridge Area Agency on Aging, met with the Board concerning a budget request for FY 14/15. Also present was Roy Schoon, Pomeroy, member of the Board of Directors. The match fund request of $7,811.10 is the same in the past years.

The hearing was held, as published, to approve Development Agreement and Tax Increment Payments. Those present were: Pam Anderson, Director, Economic Development; Rollin Tiefenthaler; Tia Tieffenthaler; and Joan Wagner, County Assessor.

A meeting of the Board of Supervisors of Calhoun County, Iowa, was held at 10:30 o’clock a.m., on December 3, 2013, at the Courthouse, Boardroom, Rockwell City, Iowa, pursuant to the rules of the Board.

The Chairperson presided and the roll was called, showing Supervisors present and absent as follows: Present: Dean G. Hoag, Sr. and Scott Jacobs. Absent: Gary Nicholson The Board of Supervisors investigated and found that notice of the intention of the Board of Supervisors to conduct a public hearing to approve a Development Agreement between the County and Al’s Corner Oil Company with respect to the development of a commercial truck stop, which agreement provides for certain financial incentives in the form of economic development incremental property tax payments in a total amount not exceeding $300,000, had been published according to law and as directed by the Board and that this is the time and place at which the Board shall receive oral or written objections from any resident or property owner of the County. All written objections, statements, and evidence heretofore filed were reported to the Board, and all oral objections, statements, and all other exhibits presented were considered.

No written or oral statements were submitted.

There being no further objections or comments, the Chairperson announced that the hearing was closed.

Supervisor Scott Jacobs introduced the resolution next hereinafter set out and moved its adoption, seconded by Supervisor Dean G. Hoag, Sr.; and after due consideration thereof by the Board, the Chairperson put the question upon the adoption of said resolution, and the roll being called, the following named Supervisors voted: Ayes: Dean G. Hoag, Sr. and Scott Jacobs. Nays: none.

Whereupon, the Chairperson declared said resolution duly adopted, as follows: RESOLUTION 2013-38 Approving Development Agreement with Al’s Corner Oil Company, Authorizing Tax Increment Payments and Pledging Certain Tax Increment Revenues to the Payment of the Agreement.

WHEREAS, Calhoun County, Iowa (the “County”), pursuant to and in strict compliance with all laws applicable to the County, and in particular the provisions of Chapter 403 of the Code of Iowa, has previously adopted an Urban Renewal Plan for the Calhoun County 2013 Urban Renewal Area (the “Urban Renewal Area”); and WHEREAS, this Board has adopted an ordinance providing for the division of taxes

levied on taxable property in the Urban Renewal Area pursuant to Section 403.19 of the Code of Iowa and establishing the fund referred to in Subsection 2 of Section 403.19 of the Code of Iowa (the “Urban Renewal Tax Revenue Fund”), which fund and the portion of taxes referred to in that subsection may be irrevocably pledged by the County for the payment of the principal and interest on indebtedness incurred under the authority of Section 403.9 of the Code of Iowa to finance or refinance in whole or in part projects in the Urban Renewal Area; and WHEREAS, a certain Development Agreement (the “Agreement”) between the County and Al’s Corner Oil Company (the “Company”) has been prepared pursuant to which the Company has agreed to the development of a commercial truck stop in the Urban Renewal Area (the “Al’s Corner Oil Project”) and under which the County would provide economic development incremental tax increment payments in a total amount not exceeding $300,000; and WHEREAS, this Board of Supervisors, pursuant to Section 403.9 of the Code of Iowa, has published notice, has held a public hearing on the Agreement on December 3, 2013, and has otherwise complied with statutory requirements for the approval of the Agreement; and WHEREAS, Chapter 15A of the Code of Iowa (“Chapter 15A”) declares that economic development is a public purpose for which a County may provide grants, loans, tax incentives, guarantees and other financial assistance to or for the benefit of private persons; and WHEREAS, Chapter 15A requires that before public funds are used for grants, loans, tax incentives or other financial assistance, a Board of Supervisors must determine that a public purpose will reasonably be accomplished by the spending or use of those funds; and WHEREAS, Chapter 15A requires that in determining whether funds should be spent, a Board of Supervisors must consider any or all of a series of factors; NOW, THEREFORE, It Is Resolved by the Board of Supervisors of Calhoun County, Iowa, as follows: Section 1. Pursuant to the factors listed in Chapter 15A, the Board hereby finds that: A. The Al’s Corner Oil Project will add diversity and generate new opportunities for the Calhoun County and Iowa economies; B. The Al’s Corner Oil Project will generate public gains and benefits, particularly in the creation of new jobs, which are warranted in comparison to the amount of the proposed property tax incentives.

Section 2. The Board further finds that a public purpose will reasonably be accomplished by entering into the Agreement and providing the economic development incremental property tax payments to the Company.

Section 3. The Agreement is hereby approved and the Chairperson and County Auditor are hereby authorized and directed to execute and deliver the Agreement on behalf of the County, in substantially the form and content in which the Agreement has been presented to this Board of Supervisors, and such officers are also authorized to make such changes, modifications, additions or deletions as they, with the advice of bond counsel, may believe to be necessary, and to take such actions as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of the Agreement.

Section 4. As provided and required by Chapter 403 of the Code of Iowa, the County’s obligations under the Agreement shall be payable solely from a Subfund (the “Al’s Corner Oil Subfund”) which is hereby established, into which shall be paid that portion of the income and proceeds of the Urban Renewal Tax Revenue Fund attributable to property taxes derived from the property described as follows: Certain real property situated in Calhoun County, State of Iowa more particularly described as follows: A TRACT OF LAND LOCATED IN THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER OF THE NORTHEAST QUARTER (SE ¼ NE ¼) OF SECTION 10, TOWNSHIP 88 NORTH, RANGE 33 WEST OF THE 5TH P.M., CALHOUN COUNTY, IOWA, AND BEING MORE PARTICULARLY DESCRIBED AS FOLOWS: Commencing at the Southeast (SE) Corner of the Northeast Quarter (NE ¼) of said Section 10; Thence on a previously recorded bearing of North 00 49’ 37” East, along the East line of said Northeast Quarter (NE ¼), 1130.15 feet to the Point of Beginning. WHEREAS, Chapter 403 of the Code of Iowa authorizes counties to establish urban renewal areas and to undertake economic development projects; and WHEREAS, the County has established the Calhoun County 2013 Urban Renewal Area (the “Urban Renewal Area”) and has adopted an urban renewal plan for the governance of projects and initiatives to be undertaken therein; and WHEREAS, the Developer has undertaken the development of a commercial truck stop in the Urban Renewal Area (the “Project”); and WHEREAS, the Project is to be situated on certain real property (the “Property”) located within the Urban Renewal Area, such Property being legally described on Exhibit A hereto; and WHEREAS, the costs of undertaking the Project will include the extension of electrical service to the Property, the digging of water supply wells on the Property and the installation of a sanitary septic system on the Property; and WHEREAS, Chapter 15A of the Code of Iowa authorizes counties to provide grants, loans, guarantees, tax incentives and other financial assistance to or for the benefit of private persons; and WHEREAS, the Developer has requested that the County provide certain financial incentives to the Developer in the form of economic development incremental property tax payments in an amount not to exceed $300,000; NOW, THEREFORE, in consideration of the mutual obligations contained in this Agreement, the parties hereto agree as follows: A. Developer’s Covenants 1. The Developer agrees to construct the Project on the Property. Commencement began on September 1, 2013, and substantial completion will be accomplished by no later than June 1, 2014. Furthermore the Developer agrees to maintain the completed Project on the Property as an active commercial facility and as part of its business operations throughout the Term, as hereinafter defined.

2. The Developer agrees to ensure timely and full payment of all property taxes owed with respect to the Property and the Project throughout the Term and to submit to the County a receipt or cancelled check as evidence of each tax payment.

3. The Developer agrees to work with Calhoun County Rural Electric Cooperative to cause the extension of electric service to the Property. Furthermore, the Developer agrees to cause the digging of water supply wells and the installation of a sanitary septic system adequate to meet the sanitary and water needs of the completed Project.

4. The Developer hereby acknowledges that failure to comply with the provisions of this Section A will give the County the right to withhold some or all of the Payments, as hereinafter set forth in Section B. B. County’s Covenants In recognition of the Developer’s obligations set out above, the County agrees to make up to twenty-two semiannual economic development tax increment payments (the “Payments”) to the Developer due on each December 1 and June 1 in each fiscal year as hereinafter provided, pursuant to Chapters 15A and 403 of the Code of Iowa, provided however that the aggregate, total amount of the Payments shall not exceed Three Hundred Thousand ($300,000).

A portion of the new taxable valuation resulting from the completed Project is expected to go on the property tax rolls as of January 1, 2014, accordingly, the Payments would be due on each December 1 and June 1 commencing December 1, 2015 and continuing to, and including, June 1, 2026, or until such

earlier date on which aggregate Payments in the amount of Three Hundred Thousand ($300,000), have been made.

Each Payment shall be in an amount which represents 100% percent of the Incremental Property Tax Revenues available to the County with respect to the Property during the six months immediately preceding each Payment date. Incremental Property Tax Revenues are produced by multiplying the consolidated property tax levy (county, school, etc.) times the incremental valuation of the Property, then subtracting debt service levies of all taxing jurisdictions, subtracting the school district’s instructional support and physical plant and equipment levies and subtracting any other levies which may be exempted from such calculation by action of the Iowa General Assembly.

The Payments shall not constitute general obligations of the County, but shall be made solely and only from the Incremental Property Tax Revenues to be received by the County from the Calhoun County Treasurer which are attributable to the Property, such incremental property taxes to be collected in a Subfund of the Urban Renewal Area Urban Renewal Tax Increment Revenue Fund to be designated the “Al’s Corner Oil Company Subfund”.

The Al’s Corner Oil Company Subfund, and the Incremental Property Tax Revenues to be collected therein have been pledged by the County to the funding of the Payments hereunder.

The County agrees to certify tax increment debt relative to this Agreement by December 1, 2014 in an amount equal to Three Hundred Thousand ($300,000).

C. Administrative Provisions 1. This Agreement may not be amended or assigned by either party without the express permission of the other party. However, the County hereby gives its permission that the Developer’s rights to receive the Payments hereunder may be assigned by the Developer to a private lender, as security on borrowings made with respect to the Project, without further action on the part of the County.

2. The term (the “Term”) of this Agreement shall commence on the Commencement Date and shall continue until the date on which the final Payment is remitted by the County to the Developer as set forth in Section B above.

3. This Agreement shall inure to the benefit of and be binding upon the successors and assigns of the parties.

4. This Agreement shall be deemed to be a contract made under the laws of the State of Iowa and for all purposes shall be governed by and construed in accordance with laws of the State of Iowa.

The County and the Developer have caused this Agreement to be signed, and the County’s seal to be affixed, in their names and on their behalf by their duly authorized officers, all as of the day and date written above.

POLICE REPORT Stabbing Allegation Results In Arrest

On Nov. 21, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man being stabbed in the neck at 220 Westview Ave. Yetter.

Valentino Whitaker, 52, was taken to Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City and then transferred to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, with a wound to the neck.

On Nov. 22, a search warrant was executed at 220 Westview Ave. in Yetter. An arrest warrant for Willful Injury was issued for Ronnie A. Kraft, 46, of 220 Westview Ave., Yetter. Kraft was arrested on Dec. 2 and held in the Sac County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

OWI Charged After Accident

On Nov. 26, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated a onevehicle accident on 360th St. Travis A. Smith, 22, Lake View, and it rolled, coming to rest in the ditch.

A passenger, Jackie D. Smith of Lake City was transported Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City with injuries. Travis Smith was charged with Failure to Maintain Control and Operating While Intoxicated.

Vehicle damage was estimated at $10,000.

Traffic Accidents

On Dec. 4, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated a one-vehicle rollover accident on County Road D-26. Vicki L. Elsen, 60, Sioux city, was driving a GMC Envoy east on D-26 and lost control due to icy conditions. She reported possible injuries. Vehicle damage was estimated at $5,000.

On Dec. 6, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated a car/ raccoon accident. Joseph W. Sullen, 53, Manson, driving a 2002 Chrysler mini-van, hit a raccoon, causing an estimated $2,000 damage top the

vehicle. The driver was not injured.

On Dec. 10, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated a weather related accident on N-28.

Allison M. Batz, 17, Sac City, was driving north when blowing snow resulting from a south bound semi caused visibility problems and Batz went into the ditch. No injuries were reported. About $1,500 in damage was done to the vehicle.

On Dec. 11, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated a snowplow/car accident at First and Main St. Rockwell City. Phillip G. Hammen, 50, Rockwell City, driving the snowplow, failed to see a vehicle driven by Thomas R. Knapp, 34, Cedar Rapids, and the vehicles collided, causing an estimated total vehicle damage of $6,000. No injuries were reported. No citations were issued.

December, 1943 70 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. R. P. DeHart celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 22 at their home in Lake City. A family dinner was held at the home Sunday. Those attending included Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Day and son Merle, Mrs. Harold Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mimnaugh and son Donnie, Mr. and Mrs. Pearle DeHart, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. DeHart, Mrs. Melford DeHart, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mohr and daughter Nancy Ann, Mrs. Allie Sievert, Martin DeHart, and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Fisher. Twenty-five Calhoun county men went to Camp Dodge for possible induction into the armed services this week and, according to the local draft board, the December call is expected to be smaller. The American people were asked today by J. A. Krug, director of the Office of War Utilities, to confine Christmas lighting decorations to Christmas trees inside private homes. Mr. Krug asked that street decorations, community Christmas trees, exterior home decorations and interiors and exteriors of commercial establishments dispense with decorations this year insofar as lighting is concerned. “Government and industry have combined in a nationwide conservation campaign to save critical fuels and materials necessary to produce and consume electricity,” he said.

The December meeting of the Adaza Thursday Club followed a dinner served by Moni Moran and Jane Beschorner in the Lohrville Library meeting room on the 5th.

The hostesses were assisted by three good friends! The dining room was decorated for the holidays and the colors carried over into the adjacent Community Room where the displays were being set up for the Festival of Trees. The Adaza tree was a cluster of poinsettia plants.

The members brought some items and also made donations for the food pantry. Greetings will be sent to friends at holiday time with a recap of our year’s activities.

Martha Hennesy of Andover, MN, was at Liz Guess’ the first weekend of December. They went to the Friday night opening of the Festival of Trees in Lohrville.

Vernon and Shirley Hamilton went to Manson Sunday Dec. 8th to watch grandson Dillon in a wrestling match. He won the 3rd place trophy.

There were five from the Adaza and Churdan area at Greene County Historical Society’s December meeting the 1st Friday of the month at the Congregate Meal Site at Greenewood Center in Jefferson.

School musicians entertained with seasonal music selections by piano, vocal groups and a flute quartet, students of Becky Greiner. As is the custom, all received a sack of popcorn from Don Coon.

Liz Guess and Barbara Winkelman were in Rippey Saturday Dec. 7th for the breakfast served by Friends of Rippey.

The Hamilton’s, Vernon and Shirley, Eugenia and her children, Raeann, Olivia and Dillon, were involved in the living nativity scene presented the morning of the 7th by the Paton Presbyterian Church members. The animals present were a donkey, sheep, chickens, doves, a miniature cow and rabbits, and some of these came from the Hamilton farm. Vernon and Dillon were shepherds, Olivia was Mary.

Another family furnished a wall of baled straw that provided some protection from the cold breezes of the weather. A craft making table was available, also hot chocolate, coffee, cake and cookies.

We offer our sympathy to Hat Gidel and her family at the recent passing of her husband, Dale. Dale, who was involved in many community projects, served on the original Board of Directors responsible for the building of Sunnyview Independent Living. Thank you, Dale.

One of the impressive things about the Golden Buckle Home Christmas party on Sunday evening, Dec. 8, was the fluffy blanket of snow.

These feathery flakes had countless sparkles set off by the street lights.

Another impressive thing about the party was that even though the entertainment group was unable to make it from out of town (the beautiful snow was treacherous), the party-attendees came up with their own entertainment. We sang -- under the direction of Renee Stauter and other members of the Golden Buckle Home Board of Directors who were in attendance. We sang Christmas carols, taking requests from the audience, a cappella. Audience participation was a key factor – it was fun!

The Sunnyview staff would like to thank the Sunnyview residents for their gifts. Thank you to the GBH Board of Directors for putting on the Christmas party. Also, the Sunnyview staff would like to thank the Board of Directors for their gifts. There was plenty of pizza and fellowship. One star of the evening was a wee lad named Mason who was about three months old, the grandson of a Sunnyview staff member.

Sunnyview was well-adorned for the party. Sandy and her crew (was it

Jana and Angie?) did a fine job. There are now four large Christmas trees throughout the building. Assembling the trees was not the end of it, of course. Next were the lights and then all the individual ornaments. Often there are other helpers who join in, and this year was no exception.

Along with other decorations throughout the building, like wall hangings and table arrangements, the place is really done up. There are numerous nativity scenes on display, each unique, to remind us of the Christ Child. The TV Lounge is graced with a lovely tree (could it be Carene’s tree?), the southwest entry way is graced with a charming tree (could it be Marlene’s?) and many other touches abound. There is even a small colorful tree in the kitchen. Thank you to everyone who was involved with “decking the halls.” This year we missed the decorating input from Dee Harman, who worked for Sunnyview for over 35 years and passed away this past March.

One morning several days ago, before the snow, freezing rain turned into a coating of ice that covered the roads, sidewalks, cars, and everything else. Travel was difficult.

The next day the ice had vanished from the sidewalks, etc. Some of us were confused – had the temperatures risen into the 40s or 50s during the night, melted all of that ice, and then plummeted again by morning? We were told by reliable sources that the ice had actually “freeze dried.” This sounds rather mysterious -- what do you think?

My thought for the day is: The only blind person at Christmas time is he who has not Christmas in his heart.

A really big THANK YOU to United Bank for the Open House and the food. I think maybe a thankyou is due to Nila for fixing the food which was terrific. I had the pleasure to sit at the Festival and making sure that all was well on Saturday.

The Kick Off for Christmas was so nice with caroling, food, games, craft making and of course Santa’s visit. Thanks to all who made it happen.

The Lohrville community was saddened by the passing of Larry Hood, he was a former Calhoun County Supervisor and did a good job. He will be missed. Our sympathies go out to the Hood family and Larry’s friends.

Our sympathies go to the family of Gerald Dial, husband of former Lohrville resident Alice Ann Runquist. I’m sure he will also be missed.

Gene McGrail passed away this past week. There never was a happier guy than Gene and he will be truly missed.

On Wednesday the Reading group at the JJHands Library frosted cookies as their activity and gave each one of the Coffee Group one of their handiwork which was delicious Thank you one and all. Hope Santa brings you some of the things you want.

Christmas is such a special time of year. We have been busy trying to make Christmas special for each and every resident at Sunny Knoll. This past Sunday we were thankful to have the Catholic Church come and sing carols for us. Bill and Linda Haeder along with Neil and Karen Blaas joined in as well. What beautiful voices! Sunday we also had the Garfield Gleamers 4-H Club join us. They had made Christmas pillow cases and had put special gifts in for each of our residents to enjoy.

Wow what a busy week, as we were also trying to finish our snowmen. We took landscaping bricks and painted several coats of white paint on them, added a cute little face and clothes.

They turned out so nice. We also started making Christmas goodies for our upcoming Christmas party. We made homemade cream cheese mints, homemade peanut butter balls and decorated cut-out cookies. We had more fun sampling I think! Stop in and see all the fun things we are up to!

SCC wrestling completes busy week

By Doug Dornath South Central Calhoun’s varsity wrestling team completed a busy week on the mat as they participated in three events last week.

The Titans most recently went to the Central Springs round-robin tournament in Manly and won the tournament with 256 team points.

The Titans had three wrestlers take first place at the meet including Colin Corey (120), Zayne Barrett (182) and Aron King (285). Placing second at Manly for SCC were Caleb Maguire (152), Jeff King (160), Tyler Kutz (170) and Jesse Casey (220).

The Titans started out the week by participating in a quadrangular meet at Humboldt, Tuesday, Dec. 10, and went 2-1 as a team as they defeated East Sac County 78-0 and Ridge View 56-16 while falling to Humboldt 57-15.

On Thursday, Dec. 12, the Titans went 3-0 at a quadrangular meet hosted by Pocahontas Area in Pocahontas. The Titans defeated PAC 43-19, knocked off GraettingerTerrill/Ruthven-Ayershire 45-30, and beat Prairie Valley 57-24.

This week, the Titans were scheduled to compete at Wall Lake against East Sac County, Southeast Webster-Grand and Audubon at 6 p.m., and are at the Ridge View Tournament in Holstein Saturday, Dec. 21, at 9 a.m.

In a recent report issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Iowa ranked high in the percentage of residents who take advantage of the Do Not Call Registry. Iowa was 12th in the nation with 78% of personal phone numbers registered!

The Senior Medicare Patrol helped provide information for this guide, which discusses how to prevent frauds, scams and other types of elder financial exploitation. A “MetLife Study of Elder Financial Abuse: Crimes of Occasion, Desperation, and Predation Against America’s Elders” cites an estimated $2.9 billion lost by older Americans due to exploitation in 2010. Government and private organizations regard financial exploitation to be an epidemic.

SCC JV girls basketball team results The South Central Calhoun JV girls basketball team picked up a 3727 victory over Manson Northwest Webster Monday, Dec. 9.

The Titans were led in scoring

by Abby Clark and Allison Birks with nine points each. Jadyn Khommanyvong finished with seven points and Cali Miller and Shelby Kingery each scored four points.

Khomannyvong led in rebounds

with four while Aliyah Taylor, Kingery and Miller each had three.

Kingery also contributed three assists and two steals and Taylor also had three assists in the win.

The Titans led 9-6 after the first quarter and 20-12 at the half. MNW closed the gap to 28-23 Titans by the end of the third quarter but the Titans held the Cougars to only four points in the fourth.

The Junior High girls basketball teams picked up some more wins this past week. The 7th grade started the week with a win against Pocahontas Area. The score was 42-19. Scoring for the Titans were Heidi Hammen with 20 points, Maddie Jones with 16, Kaylynn Kruckenberg with four points and Payton Steig and Anna McChesney with two points each.

The third game saw the Titans Travel to MNW at Barnum and again come home with the victory.

Their next game vs. East Sac the Titans never got untracked and lost 31-13. The leading scorer was Meghan Dietrich with 9 points followed by Kayla Schultz with 4 points.

The Titans came out determined in the third game and beat MNW 178. Scoring was as follows: Meghan Dietrich - 10, Jessica Hicks, Ellie Ratetter and Hannah Seil with two points each and Grace Henkelman with one point. Also seeing playing time was Dezerae Blankenship, Kim Daisy and Isabella Thompson.

South Central Calhoun boys varsity team improves to 4-0

By Doug Dornath The South Central Calhoun High School boys’ basketball team added two wins last week, 66-49 over Prairie Valley at Rockwell City on Tuesday, Dec. 10, by a 77-52 final in Rockwell City, and won 74-64 over West Bend-Mallard at Lake City on Friday, Dec. 13, to move to 4-0 on the season.

In the Titans win over Prairie Valley, Ryan Daisy had his best game of the season by scoring 26 points and collecting 18 rebounds against the Warriors.

Jace Neubaum added nine points against Prairie Valley and Sam Spencer and Zach Ludwig both scored seven points in the win. Jake Petzenhauser finished with six points and our assists against the Warriors In the Titans win over WBM in Lake City, the team was led by Jake Petzenhauser’s 29 points and six assists while teammates Ryan Daisy and Jace Neubaum also scored in double figures with 18 and 16 points respectively.

Daisy led the Titans in rebounds against WBM with 13 while Petzenhauser had six and Anthony Handlos finished with five boards.

This week the Titans played Southeast Webster-Grand at Burnside Tuesday, Dec. 17, and play

free throws and scored 29 points versus West Bend. Ryan Daisy was in double figures in scoring and rebounds in both games. Jace Neubaum hit 11 of 16 from the field over the two games. Anthony Handlos had nine rebounds against Prairie Valley and made some key passes at the end of the West Bend game. Sam Spencer had five assists against Prairie Valley. Derrick Henkenius continued to drive well.

Cyle King again passed well and had two assists against Prairie Valley.
